The Who We Are update: Week 12

This week's forum is now a heritage item - worth studying but no longer current. For the latest on Australian attitudes and media trends, go to blogs.sunherald.com.au/whoweare.

To learn how women are different from men, go to The Tribal Mind.
To suggest Great Lost Aussie Inventions, go to Who We Are.

The ratings race, updated 10am Sunday
Channel Seven won the week, largely because of the semi-finals of My Kitchen Rules. If this column's theory of a political link is correct, Kevin Rudd will rise in the opinion polls.

The prime time audience shares for the week went like this: SBSTWO 0.3%; ABC3 0.4%; ABC2 1.0; ONE 1.6; 7TWO 2.6; GO 2.7; SBS1 3.8; ABC1 11.3; Ten 14.5; All Pay Stations 16.7; Nine 20.2; Seven 22.6.

This was Pay TV's account of itself: "The extra time period of the A-League Grand Final, in which Sydney FC beat Melbourne Victory 4-2 in penalty kicks, topped the week for subscription TV with 272,000 viewers (listed as Live: Football: A-League Post Game Show on FOX Sports). Live: NRL Wests Tigers v Sea Eagles was seen by 241,000 people, Live: Cricket: Test NZ v Aus 1st Test was watched by 163,000 people and Live: Rugby Union: S14 Reds v Force was viewed by 88,000 subscribers (all on FOX Sports).

"American Idol Performance Show on FOX8 was watched by 108,000 people, NCIS on TV1 was seen by 88,000 and That '70s Show on 111Hits had its best result of the year with 75,000 viewers. Coronation Street on UKTV was seen by 71,000 people, Wizards of Waverly Place on Disney Channel was viewed by 66,000 people and Megastructures: Icebreaker premiered on National Geographic with 61,000 viewers.

"In week 12, subscription TV channels had more viewers than any other network around Australia with 23.4% of all metropolitan viewing between 6am and midnight, 22.0% of all regional viewing and 58.1% of all viewing in subscription TV homes."

COMMENTS

Cannot believe the lemming reaction to V - recorded last weeks premiere and thought, "oh, hmmm, yeah, maybe" and still had the the 1st PVR set for last nights ep. Maybe we'll just go straight to PVR # 2 and catch up with the Good Wife (despite 10's misleading promos - they must be taking lessons off 7)

  • by d@gp on March 15, 2010 at 09:27 AM

V - ouch. Is that only the second episode? I got round to watching the first one last night via timetravel. I quite enjoyed it. Probably biased because (a) I'm a scifi nerd, (b) I have a soft spot for V because I used to watch it as a kid, and (c) I think Elizabeth Mitchell is delicious. Guess Australia disagrees with me.
Someone was asking last week if any of these remakes has actually been a success. Battlestar Galactica is the obvious answer. No, it didn't rate in Australia but nor do most quality shows from overseas (The Sopranos, The Wire, Six Feet Under, etc etc).

  • by Wendell on March 15, 2010 at 09:29 AM

V is falling away quickly. So much for Nine's big advertising campaign. I can understand why. It's just not very good. There really doesnt seem to be enough characters and the whole thing rests on the blonde FBI agent ( Juliet from Lost) and the priest. I am struggling to maintain interest though I will stick it out for a few weeks to see how it develops. They needed to show what the visitors really look like by now or at least a reimaging of the famous rat eating scene from the original series. Nine will bump it off to GO shortly if ratings don't improve quickly. As we all know sci-fi just doesn't rate.

  • by em on March 15, 2010 at 09:48 AM

TM, The figures for V are for only 3 cities, has the aliens obliterated 2 of our cities off the map already??? If not what did the other 2 cities watch???
Care factor for this little black duck is zilch, but let's have all the info before we start shoveling this show into the compost heap of mediocrity.

  • by PJ453 on March 15, 2010 at 10:33 AM

Wendell, that was me asking about successful TV remakes. Have BSG sitting on the shelf ready to be watched, but Farscape is our next endeavour. Was BSG shown on FTA TV?? Here in The Apple Isle we saw neither hide nor hair of it. I am a bit confused about The Good Wife promos as well, they seem to be setting something up, but when you watch the programme, they are so wide of the mark as to be completely out of the park. I quite like The Good Wife. Haven't watched any new V even though it has the woman from Firefly and Stargate.

  • by 2paw on March 15, 2010 at 10:39 AM

I reckon the problem with V started with the advertising campaign. Sure, there were heaps of ads showing spaceships over cities, explosions and pretty people in suits, but none of those things correlated and there was no explanation of what it was all about, apart from that Dramatic Voiceover Guy telling us how it was an Event We Have Never Seen Before On Television (apart from the time when the same show was on before, I'm assuming). I haven't watched it and won't, simply because I don't get what it's about...further to what I know from watching it as a kid and remembering them being (POSSIBLE SPOILER) rat-eating lizards or something.

  • by NJK on March 15, 2010 at 12:36 PM

Hang on. Re V. You've only listed 3 cities for the survey. Did V NOT air in two other markets last night? Then our judgemental comments are out of context. Sorry 9 - let's see what happens next week.

Tribal Mind replies: Apparently not. But compare last night's syd and melb figures with the previous Sunday's: 397,000 and 382,000

  • by d@gp on March 15, 2010 at 12:44 PM

Apparently there was a V encore of episode 1 on Sunday afternoon. The figures for Perth and Adelaide for the second episode were recorded as the encore figures for some reason. Still terrible. V will be following Fringe to Go! very soon.

  • by J Bar on March 15, 2010 at 01:11 PM

2Paw, As I recall, Channel 10 had the first season BSG. They showed the Pilot as a miniseries over 2 consecutive nights and with lots of hype in primetime and it rated reasonably well (probably early 2005). They followed with season 1, the ratings quickly slid and by the time the (13 episode) season finished it had been pushed to a late night timeslot. I think season 2 was shown late night also but I had switched to DVD by then. By the time seasons 3 and 4 came around, TEN pushed them onto the newly launched TenHD (precursor to OneHD) as a TenHD exclusive.
As we've discussed many times before, Scifi just don't rate in Australia (although, oddly, Scifi shows always seem to rate well for a couple of episodes before dropping off - that I've never understood.
As for V - bring on the rat-eating!

  • by Wendell on March 15, 2010 at 01:45 PM

V's ok. It if stays on, I will keep watching, well have it on in the background while I do things and the sense of dread that the working week is about to start builds. Wendell - I think Elizabeth Mitchell is delicious as well. A pity for you, she's mine... ;)))

  • by Tim on March 15, 2010 at 01:53 PM

1.3m watch the premier of V and 400k the repeat.
With some cities missing it looked like the fall off was about the 20% that shows normally have for week 2. Lots of people check out the premier and some people don't like, other tape later episodes.
Personally I think V just isn't believable these days. Information is too decentralised with the net, tweets, mobiles for any conspiracy to control it. And the US Government is doing so much monitoring they couldn't miss everything about such a conspiracy.

  • by Pertinax on March 15, 2010 at 02:13 PM

Not mentioned is the fact that the ABC has ditched Sleuth 101 and My Place due to dreadful ratings.
It appears the ABC's largely over 55 audience will not longer watch anything just because the ABC made it, and the ABC will no longer stick with unpopular programs without ditching them for more than a fortnight.

  • by Pertinax on March 15, 2010 at 02:18 PM

Woo Hoo! That walking corpse bert is hosting the logies this year! how bad can the logies get?

  • by davo on March 15, 2010 at 05:54 PM

Wendell, thank you, that explains the BSG conundrum: we didn't have the digital CH10 here until a year or so ago, only our versions of 7 and 9.

Tribal Mind asks: Where's "here"? And for new readers, I should explain that BSG is Battlestar Galactica.

  • by 2paw on March 15, 2010 at 10:18 PM

Saw Man vs Wild last night. This is a very underrated show. So many cringeworthy (but I can't look away) moments - eg: eating a freshly slain Yak's eye ball just because it has many vitamins!!! "grissly and wet". Bear Gryliss (great TV name) is fantastic. Won't be long before FTA steal this one as well.
Timeshifted everything else so that I could watch the footy.

  • by Mr Black on March 16, 2010 at 09:54 AM

TM
do you know if Who Do You Think You Are? USA is going to be shown here
- Foxtel or FTA?
I love the British and Aussie versions.
as a Sci-Fi nerd i was surprised by how much i didn't like V,
the only Sci-Fi that has kept me interested is the sometimes glorious sometimes sleep indusing Dollhouse

Tribal Mind replies: I don't but somebody will.

  • by Jac on March 16, 2010 at 12:15 PM

Missed the Tony show on 4 corners last night - still in denial about the fact I have been rezoned into his electorate federally - what did I do wrong? I was previously in an electorate (North Sydney) where my vote has sometimes meant something. Now am in ultra safe seat. Not happy.
Re Bert hosting logies - another reaosn not to watch - as if I needed another one.
Supernatural fans note - Ten is bringing it back from 29 March. Also new eps of Vampire Diaries, Nip Tuck and Weeds coming soon to GO!!!!OMG - I forget the rest.
Will be interested to give Community a trial (new Chevy Chase Joel McHale show) on GO!!!OMG next week.

  • by Cathy on March 16, 2010 at 12:15 PM

Mr Black, my family loves this show. Did you know that Bear Gryliss has just become the Chief Scout of the UK! I guess the scout cooking nights will be a little interesting as will their jamboree!

  • by Louise on March 16, 2010 at 12:45 PM

Ahh, honestly, I've turned into Tracy Jordan, never finishing what I.... .
Here is Tasmania. We did not have Ch10, as a digital station, until the recent past and so missed out on seeing most, if not all, of Battlestar Galactica.

  • by 2paw on March 16, 2010 at 01:37 PM

Hurrah! My favourite children's show is back on TV (at 7.15 in place of Mickey Mouse on 7Two - did my 4 year old get a surprise), Steven Moffatt's 'Press Gang'. Despite its dated fashions, it's still deliciously funny and romantic (I don't think it's been on free to air for 10 years or so). That's my TV excitement.

  • by rex on March 16, 2010 at 01:47 PM

Completely forgot about "V", was too busy catching up on various timeshifted programs (notably: Castle, Burn Notice, and Steven Colbert/Jon Stewart). No great loss, if we've failed to have a rat being eaten!
I definitely nitpicked far too much in the first episode to really enjoy the idea of returning again anyhow.
Mr Black, I've caught bits of Man vs. Wild in passing, and it's certainly something.

  • by tqd on March 16, 2010 at 02:24 PM

Seve pulls another flopping factual from late night on Mondays and they STILL won't play 30 Rock at 10.30pm. Nutbags!

  • by J Bar on March 16, 2010 at 03:40 PM

Disagree with the comments slamming Bert hosting the Logies - he'll be a breath of fresh air to the event - even though he told me a few years ago (when the Tele was pushing for him to return as host) that he really didn't want to go back into the past...

  • by d@gp on March 16, 2010 at 03:51 PM

Cathy - do you have a start date for the new Weeds eps? What was your source?
I got redistributed as well, but this gives me a chance to bring down some nasty numpty from Tony's team...

  • by Wendell on March 16, 2010 at 03:55 PM

To Wendell who asked about when for Weeds - Weeds will return at 10:30 / 11:00pm on Monday 29 March - following new eps of Vampire Diaries and Nip/Tuck with Wonderful Wonderful and Machetes Up Top. These are the first two episodes of the fifth season which aired in the US last June.
My source is tvtonight.com.au

  • by Cathy on March 16, 2010 at 04:11 PM

Watched 4 Corners the other night. Abbott certainly didn't impress me. Especially his views on women. Once a religious nut always a religious nut. And there is certainly no love lost between him and Turnbull. I thought the report was quite unbiased really and the reporter did a good job.
And just a quick comment about Bert hosting the Logies. What are they thinking? Another reason the Logies are a big, embarrasing joke.

  • by em on March 17, 2010 at 09:31 AM

Oh, I'm okay with Bert hosting the Logies. You've got to admit, it's a classy move for an awards show that insists on importing some bewildered American starlet to give an award each year

Tribal Mind observes: Fair enough, but where are your suggestions for the Bogies?.

  • by tqd on March 17, 2010 at 01:05 PM

You know, if I were a Channel Nine wonk I would cross-promote the sinking 'V' by having someone do a behind-the-ear alien-check incision on Bert on air at the Logies. It could be disguised as 'humour' and we'd know once and for all. It couldn't be worse than Gretel on a swing or pretending to die on stage.
But I'm not so I wont. :)

  • by darren on March 17, 2010 at 02:53 PM

I think your a little ahead of yourself david saying mkr approaches mc status. actually mc on a normal ep made it to 1.8m in the same amount of time mkr has been on air, so really its not even close, and i cant see it getting over 4m peak audience, i cant even see it getting over 2m

  • by Ryan on March 17, 2010 at 03:34 PM

With all the alternative media/entertainment resources available today i am amazed our networks continue with the 20 minutes of ads etc per hour which is driving away viewers, like me.Plus messy about with program times , 15 min late starts, is a turn off trigger.I think 7/9/10 are doomed if they can not reform.

  • by doug on March 17, 2010 at 04:42 PM

Never saw on episode of MKR. I was never inclined to in any way. The ads were enough to turn me off. It just didn't seem to have the same charisma of Masterchef or something. Maybe I just like the MC judges better.

  • by em on March 18, 2010 at 09:49 AM

Shame that Cougar Town is down so much. I'm really liking it now and there's some greta laugh out loud moments. It's definitely the new Scrubs for me. See you on Mondays at 10.30pm next year Cougar Town.

  • by J Bar on March 19, 2010 at 08:41 AM

Just heard that on Spicks & Specks last night Fiona OLoguhlin had the nerve to insult Bindi Irwin! And what a lot of mock outrage Kochie & Mel showed on this mornings Sunrise. How dare Fiona insult a child etc? And didn't Kochie huff & puff? He really piled on the outrage.
What doss. Fiona meant it as a joke. And in my opinion she is right anyway. Bindi Irwin IS creepy! And looks a right brat. But it seems you can't say anything against her even jokingly without the lynch mobs forming. All I can say, it must have been a slow news morning.

  • by em on March 19, 2010 at 08:51 AM

In the true traditions of the mid eighties to early nineties show, MacGyver, Ten's show Burn Notice goes about the business of saving the world using the same, but updated technologically, unlikely improvisational skills displayed in its earlier incarnation.
The show has everything, good guys, a pretty maiden, a loving mother who worries about her wayward son, explosions, kidnappings, gun battles where no one gets hurt but everything gets resolved, the good guys always win, the bad guys always lose but usually run away having been outwitted, the show has everything going for it yet can't attract an audience. I wonder why?
Also TM, how does 5th Gear actually rate on 7two, I know they are showing old shows but oddly, many of the cars shown look rather new for our market and many of the gadgets and safety equipment talked about as common place are only just starting to reach our markets here in Australia. Fully understandable as these things have obviously either not or just been invented in Australia and the costs of developing must be enormous for such a small market as Australia. I like this show, its mainly about the sorts of cars we all drive, presented by people who actually know something about cars.
Where Top Gear is just entertainment, 5th Gear is entertaining and informative.

Tribal Mind replies: I'll put 5th gear in the chart next time i see it.

  • by Zjonn on March 19, 2010 at 10:34 AM

I used to love Top Gear. Would never miss it. But I think the change to Ch Nork was the last straw. Won't watch it on Nork. Won't watch it on GO!11!1!11!1OMGWTFBBQ. I think my dislike is proportional to the length of Hamsters hair. I have tried to watch 5th Gear but they've also gone down the banter road.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on March 19, 2010 at 10:59 AM

First Peter Greaves (Mission Impossible) now Fess Parker (Davey Crockett) who's going to be number 3???

  • by PJ453 on March 19, 2010 at 11:31 AM

PJ453 you said Fess Parker as Davy Crockett - for mine he was Daniel Boone who was a man, a big man.... Blame it on many brothers.
And yes I am wondering who will be the next TV 60s icon to go....

  • by Cathy on March 19, 2010 at 12:23 PM

Re BindiGate, It's ironic that 'Kochie's Joke of The Day' is a feature segment on 'Sunrise' whilst Kochie and his Stepford Wife co-host and the whole sickeningly goodie goodie bunch of them are possibly the leading lights in the Let's-Guilt-Australia-Into-Doubting-It's-Own-Sense-Of-Humour brigade.
What I read was "Recovering Alcoholic" Fiona O'Laughlin has "stooped to a new low" etc etc. Fiona O'Laughlin's shtick has always been making fun of kids, mostly her own. She's a comedian. She makes jokes. Geez. What is wrong with people?
By the way, the article I read also said Bindi is in the States promoting her new movie... 'Free Willy 4'!!!! If that's not funny I don't know what is.
Maybe this: The Obligatory Pissweak Overseas Guests (OPWOGs) at the Logies this year are Susan Boyle and John 'My Penis is a White-Supremicist' Mayer. Just gets crapperer and crapperer.

  • by darren on March 19, 2010 at 01:45 PM

Zjonn, I'm with you on the MacGyver-for-the-noughties. Burn Notice has to be the biggest dumb fun on the box. (I tend to collapse in giggles over Fi's trout pout and Michael's range of emotions - from a to alpha, as Mr TQD puts it - and appalling accents. But I'm there every week.) Started watching it for the old big-chinned man himself, Mr Bruce Campbell, and am now just happily hooked.
Caught up with ABC1 Wednesday night lineup on ABC2 on Thursday night. Did like the Bingle News Network on Hungry Beast.
Funnily enough, on Saturday night I surfed over to ABC2 just in time to see Harry Joy in the mental hospital in Ray Lawrence's excellent adaptation of Peter Carey's "Bliss" (now there's one book I should be re-reading). And then on Wednesday night, surfed over to ABC2 just in time to see Harry Joy in the mental hospital in the new opera of "Bliss". (Mr TQD instantly stuck his fingers in his ears and complained about modern music. I had to point out it was in a *mental hospital*, discordant music was essential. But I was still rather glad when that bit ended.)
I bet when I open the book, I'll end up just where Harry Joy is in the mental institute...

  • by tqd on March 19, 2010 at 02:23 PM

RE: Bindi Irwin - why did this take two days to hit the news? Maybe yesterday's news was just too busy...
RE: Free Willy 4, I can never think about that movie without thinking of Homer Simpson watching Free Willy
"Jump Free Willy JUMP!! Jump with all your might!"
"Oh no, Willy didn't make it. And he crushed our boy".
"Oh, I hate this new director's cut!!!"
SYTYCD - ouch. It just keeps getting worse. I'm not sure if it's the poor lead in of 7PP and Biggest Loser (and whether it's starting the reality marathon at 7:30pm instead of 7pm, meaning that Dance doesn't come on til 8pm, when most people are already committed to another show) or whether it's not as good as other years...I don't think it's AS bad. I do think Biggest Loser has jumped the shark for the final time - sending two contestants to Alice Springs with The Commando (who needs to stop being onscreen without his sunglasses, btw, he loses his mystique!) is just the last straw. Which is a shame, because Hayley is SO much better than Ajay. And that I think is also having an effect. Disappointing for SYTYCD anyway. Ten need to seriously reconsider their lineup before Masterchef comes into play - because they don't want to damage their golden goose!!

Beckala: why did it take 2 days for BindiIrwinSpicksnSpecksO'LoughlinGate to hit the heights of incredulity? Because there was nothing fresh to report about Bingle today.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on March 19, 2010 at 08:53 PM

Perhaps it took longer because whoever began this stir-uppy nonsense watched 'Spicks and Specks' at 8pm on Thursday, the ABC2 repeat.

  • by rex on March 20, 2010 at 07:06 AM

I am glad to read that other people share the Burn Notice love. It's escapism at its very best. I love the voice over, the funny captions and the excellent characterisation. Plus it's Bruce Campbell from Herc and Xena, Gabrielle Anwar from Press Gang and Jeffrey Donovan from The Pretender (how I loved that show too) and Crossing Jordan. It is must watch TV for me every week.

I don't know if Kerry is hor or not, but she just gives this whole "won't shut the hell up" vibe. Be it on infomercials, pimping Coca Cola as being a healthy drink, or awards speeches.
On another note, those Biffo ratings don't include 4 Skerricks supporting the mighty Dragons :)
