The Who We Are update: Courtney goes down

This week's forum is now a heritage item - worth studying but no longer current. For the latest on Australian attitudes and media trends, go to blogs.sunherald.com.au/whoweare.

To learn how television tastes predict voting intention, go to The Tribal Mind.

To learn how Australia became the land of the short attention span, go to Who We Are.

The ratings race, updated 10 am Sunday
The decline of Cougar Town is more apparent than real. Despite being described as "a shit show" by David Leckie, the boss of Channel Seven, and dropping to No 43 in the weekly chart, Courtney Cox's sitcom is the most watched program of Thursday night with these demographics: women 16-39, men 25-54, and women 25-54. That's a strong incentive for advertisers, and a good reason for Seven to keep showing it in prime time. And as you'll see from the chart below, it's one of the most recorded prgrams each week. Go to Comments to tell us if it has got better or worse, now that it has settled in.

The prime time audience shares for the week went like this: SBSTWO 0.5%; ABC3 0.5%; ONE 0.8; ABC2 1.5; 7TWO 3.4; GO 3.4; SBS1 5.0; ABC1 14.7; Ten 19.0; Nine 25.5; Seven 26.6.

And thiw waw Pay TV's account of itself: "Live: Cricket: Twenty20: NZ v Aus Game 2 on FOX Sports topped the week for subscription TV, when 314,000 viewers watched New Zealand narrowly beat Australia in an "extra time" over. In other cricket, 244,000 people watched Australia beat NZ in the second one day international, Live: Cricket: ODI NZ v Aus 2nd ODI, 183,000 watched Football: Premier League World, 151,000 watched Live: Football: AFC Asian Cup Qualifier Aus v Ind and 123,000 watched Live: Rugby Union: S14 Waratahs v Sharks (all on FOX Sports).

"America's Next Top Model on FOX8 was viewed by 104,000 people, NCIS on TV1 was seen by 81,000 people and Two And A Half Men on Arena was watched by 76,000 viewers. Jesse Stone: Death in Paradise premiered on 13th Street with 76,000 viewers, SpongeBob SquarePants had 72,000 viewers on Nickelodeon and Wizards of Waverly Place on Disney Channel was watched by 69,000 people.

"In week 10, subscription TV channels won the week with 24.3% of all metropolitan viewing between 6am and midnight, 22.9% of all regional viewing and 60.4% of all viewing in subscription TV homes. "

COMMENTS

It doesn't seem like tTen is getting the best use out of the formerly top rating Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation on Sundays at 7.30pm with the factuals beating it and 60 Minutes close. Ten have lost a big chunk of the audience after moving it from Tuesdays and left a gap on that night, which the other networks have successfully exploited.
My Place was good when I saw it on ABC3 last year but it was a curious decision to run a former ABC3 children's show in a prime time slot on a Sunday night. I think it could have been okay if it ran here first or was on Sunday at 6.30pm. But a repeat on Sunday at 7.30pm seems like an odd programming move.

I'm really enjoying The Good Wife, I quite like all the main cast. Interested in other viewers thoughts..

  • by Danna on March 01, 2010 at 12:03 PM

Am fast losing interest in The Good Wife. It just fails to have me caring enough about the characters to make me want to tune in again next week. Really it is all a bit boring and same old thing just another legal drama. I expected more. Talk about over hyped.
And by the way, anyone know when the new Survivor - Heroes & Villians starts on Nine? I thought it was supposed to be after Top Gear but don't see it on the schedule for tomorrow. A quick google and I see they are already up to ep 4 in the US.

Tribal Mind replies: By coincidence I just received this press release:

"Twenty former castaways return to compete on Survivor: Heroes Vs Villains when the 20th instalment of the Emmy Award-winning series premieres with a special two-hour episode, hosted by Jeff Probst, Tuesday, March 9 at 8.40pm on Channel Nine. Survivor: Heroes Vs Villains reunites some of the most memorable, heroic and controversial castaways from previous Survivor seasons in Samoa."

I'm struggling to watch The Good Wife because (and I must be shallow) I'm so distracted by Juliana Marguawlekrs (no idea how that's spelt). She seems so different but I'm not sure if it's just the hair? She was a great vet on Sesame Street last week when Big Bird broke his wing but there's is definitely something strange about her now. Maybe I'm mad (certainly sleep-deprived).

Tribal Mind wonders: Could it be the botox?

  • by rex on March 01, 2010 at 02:56 PM

wow house at 700,000 !!! get it off sundays. Its much better than that .

Tribal Mind replies: But how many people recorded it for viewing later? I'll tell you next week.

  • by Don on March 01, 2010 at 04:34 PM

I watched Breaking the Mould on ABC1, as I thought the Maria Korp thing just looked very similar to the Caroline Byrne telemovie last year (which I thought was pretty average except for Garry McDonald).
Breaking the Mound was not the most 'dramtic' story ever written, but the pure human drama of the amazing efforts of Howard Florey and Ernst Chain was compelling. Surely as Robert Menzies said, Florey is the most important Australian that ever lived - I read today he has saved an estimated 80 million lives with his work.
The Good Wife, to me is OK, but like most legal dramas gets a bit samey (except Boston Legal), I think they are doing interesting things with the characters and if they keep the cases from being too cliche will stay with it.

  • by Chris on March 01, 2010 at 08:59 PM

On Sunday night there was a choice between Mould and Tunguska and I went with Tunguska. I felt that if I saw Rebecca Gibney or Vince Colossimo in one more 'based on a true story' story I would do something on which a 'based on a true story' story could be based. How about some fiction, Australian Commercial Channels?
Juliana Margulies (pronounced Mah Goolies) has always been someone I've found difficult to watch. Her face has never moved much even before botox in her E.R. days. I liked her in 'The Sopranos' (briefly) but she's the main reason I haven't bothered with 'The Good Wife'.
Good to see someone's done a painting of Schapelle Corby for the Archibald this year given her many years of involvement in the arts. Is there no escape? For us I mean.

Tribal Mind wonders: That's all very well and fine, Darren, but where are your suggestions for the Bogies? We value your input. You just have to click here.

  • by darren on March 02, 2010 at 05:56 AM

USA-Canada gold medal game was the most watched TV event in Canadian history, average audience 16.6m. Equivalent audience in Australia 11m. Closing ceremony only got 14.3m in Canada.

Tribal Mind wonders: That's all very well and fine, Canoli, but where are your suggestions for the Bogies? You just have to click here.

  • by canoli on March 02, 2010 at 08:29 AM

TM, the botoxed look on The Good Wife is definitely off putting. Not just Juliana but also the other female attorney (don't know her name but she used to be in some sitcom?) is so damn plastic she looks like an android. I must admit I am sick and tired of the botox look. Why does Hollywood persist in this practice? Do they really think we like to see all these plastic people running around? It's so damn phony and yuck. That's why I like British shows. The actors generally look like real people, warts & all. Australian actors seem to be following the same practice. Please stop the botox!
Sorry, that's my rant for today but I am sick of seeing people on TV that can't smile anymore and heaven forbid a laugh line shows! Age gracefully, people!

Tribal Mind replies: You recognise the other female lawyer from Mamma Mia!. But all this sounds like a category for The Bogies - least Convincing Botox? To make suggestions for the Bogies 2010, you just have to click here.

  • by em on March 02, 2010 at 08:49 AM

Don: Actually House has been doing great in the new Sunday timeslot. It's only been hit this week by Maria Korp, as it has been constantly getting 900k-1mil since it debut this year.

Tribal Mind replies: Plus it's the most timeshifted show currently on. There may be a Bogies category in this. To make a suggestion, click here.

  • by Clem on March 02, 2010 at 10:00 AM

I agree J Bar. Ten is losing out by moving Generation to Sunday. I also think moving So You Think You Can Dance to thurs wasn't a great move either. They should've left it how it was. Both shows were better suited in their original timeslots.

  • by Helena on March 02, 2010 at 10:43 AM

We went with the mould on Sunday. Wanted to see how an Englishman who normally plays a Balimore cop was going to be an Australian, & struth he was pretty bonza! Yes it was slow but hell mould takes time to grow. There should be more Aussie history shows like this, then they won't have to put it into the Uniform Corriculum (spelling?) Well it is a word with more letters than C A T (surely Julia could've used something else???). The Good Wife & House has been timeshifed (or in this case recorded so somebody can watch it later but at present is just taking up storage space). Tonight every known recording device will be used to "Timeshift" all the shows.
TMers - I could be wrong but I think TM wants us to come up with new catagories for the Bogies....I'm thinking, I'm thinking!!!

  • by PJ453 on March 02, 2010 at 11:59 AM

I watched the first episode of Jerry Seinfeld's "the Marriage Ref" last night. What a crock of unfunny garbage.
I understand Seven are doing a local version. I'm sure they will have seen the American pilot and looked on with horror at the turkey they paid good money for.
This pile of crap just may rival "the White Room" for both laughs and longevity.

Tribal Mind asks: In what way did you watch it and can you tell the rest of us how we might do the same?

  • by Sahara on March 02, 2010 at 12:39 PM

TV is being neglected in the TQD household. Again. But I did catch the opening bit of "Sanctuary" (ABC2, 9:30 last night) and thought it had a fair amount of promise. Have recorded it for later viewing.
I was hoping they'd squeeze in a Colbert Report episode I *hadn't* seen last night, but, no, another repeat. Still, new Colbert Report & Q.I. & First Tuesday tonight! I'm a happy little viewer.
I'd also be happy to see far less botox in the world. The plastification of Hollywood is just plain creepy.
Started re-reading "Nineteen Eighty-Four" the other day. One could weep at what reality TV has done to Big Brother. Doubleplusungood.

  • by tqd on March 02, 2010 at 12:57 PM

em posted: Not just Juliana but also the other female attorney (don't know her name but she used to be in some sitcom?)
That's Christine Baranski, who was not only in Mamma Mia, but she was the best friend in the sitcom 'Cybill'. Apparently her character in Mamma Mia was written specifically for her, they used the character in Cybill as the basis.
I am liking the Good Wife - but then again, I don't watch too many other legal shows, so I'm probably liking it without the overkill some other people may be experiencing.

  • by Beckala on March 02, 2010 at 01:26 PM

Sahara: Yep, I've seen the promos trying to get Aussie couples in for the Australian version of "The Marriage Ref". *shudder*
Mr Bear came home with a flyer last year asking if we wanted him to be on a show being developed for Channel Nine. Sounded like a "Kids Say the Darndest Things" ripoff. Luckily it doesn't seem to have gotten any further than that. (And Mr Bear wasn't interested, so that was the end of any potential involvement from us.)
Beckala, I love Christine Baranski! Her role as Becky Martin-Granger in "Addams Family Values" still cracks me up. (Canoes! Canoes! Canoes!) Maybe I need to get out more.

  • by tqd on March 02, 2010 at 03:32 PM

tqd, I had forgotten that Christine Baranski was in Addams Family too!!
Was just looking at the guide for Top Gear tonight (Mr Beckala is mucho mucho excited) - just wondering, does anybody know when they are planning on showing the Bolivia special? Apparently they already played that in Adelaide one week when the cricket was on in all other states, yet Nine still hasn't put it on elsewhere - I am looking forward to that one, so I'm just wondering when they will let the rest of the states catch up!!
And I am in total agreement with the complaints about the Ten programming - SYTYCD was perfect for a Sunday night - although if they put TBYG back on Tuesdays it would go up against Top Gear, which would split the audience a bit, I feel. So many good shows on Tuesdays, my recorders don't have enough room for them!!

  • by Beckala on March 02, 2010 at 05:57 PM

Matthew Newton could definitely get some tips from Dominic West on accents.
Julianna Marguelis' face is too botoxed, slightly offputting. Doing the Oscar rounds, Sandra Bullock is looking way too botoxed too. I believe Ch 9 is doing the live Oscar feed again next Monday (yay!), and then some version at night, not sure if they're going to cut it or anything like last year.
Definitely Eddie McGuire for worst personality/host/sports presenter/overall, but it was good (in a way) that they got Johnny Weir on, he was engaging and funny. Everything McGuire lacked.

  • by Kym on March 02, 2010 at 09:31 PM

Before you all get in an uproar of concern for Lara Bingle over her nudie pics (because I know she's got fans here), consider: She's recently signed on with Max Markson. He finds she has nothing to promote. The stolen Austin Martin is old news and she's reluctant to get out of a limo without undies on. She has no discernable talent. What do you do? You take a pixelly mobile phone photo of her in the shower, send it to Women's Day and blame it on a footballer. Voila. Lara's back in the news. Make a few comments about suing mumble mumble. Call a press conference!!! And then say nothing. It's just too cute. Call me a cynic.

  • by darren on March 03, 2010 at 05:59 AM

Now now darren, Max Markson stated that your theory was "ridiculous and not true" - so we all know now that poor Lara is just the innocent victim here ;-) Funnily enough, your theory was the exact same thought I had on hearing this story - and on Nova yesterday morning when Dools asked him that question he was most upset. Now it seems like Fevola is getting in on the legal action, and Julia Gillard is getting in on the outrage too - oh, how the mainstream morning media is loving this (I'm home sick so I'm watching horrific amounts of daytime tv because my brain is too frazzled to take a lot in at the moment). The other hot topic - Ipswich's 150th birthday - both Sunrise and Today were filming from there live this morning. I wonder if the cast and crew are booked on the same flights home? To be a fly on that wall....

  • by Beckala on March 03, 2010 at 08:24 AM

I agree that Juliana Margulies is totally unwatchable in The Good Wife because of the botox. Christa Miller make feel a bit uneasy in Cougar Town while Courtney Cox has obviously had some but hasn't overdosed. Same goes for Vanessa Williams and the girls from Desperate Housewives. You notice that they've had botox when you seem them in an old role and notice that their foreheads moved when they raised their eyebrows.
The ultimate botox overdose victim would have to be Meg Ryan. If you watch 'The Women', the latest movie she was in, you spend the whole movie wondering how her face is tighter than two decades ago in 'When Harry met Sally'.

  • by J Bar on March 03, 2010 at 08:31 AM

I have to agree about Juliana and botox. When I was watching Despos on Monday I was looking out for the botox factor, and whilst there is definitely some enhancement going on with the faces, they are all still able to frown (even Bree). Maybe they have asked to ease off? As for Meg Ryan, I think there is alot more than botox going on with her...

  • by Jill on March 03, 2010 at 09:14 AM

Looks like I wasn't alone in finding that "The Marriage Ref" was a turkey. SMH has an article in the entertainment section in which my opinion was repeated by a number of critics

Tribal Mind asked: In what way did you watch it and can you tell the rest of us how we might do the same?

Well I used torrents which some people find a little complicated but here's an easier way

1. Go to http://www.rlslog.net/the-marriage-ref-s01e01-hdtv-xvid-2hd/

2. This is just a forum except the comments are links to where you can download from. From here you can get almost anything. Look at the various categories on the right hand side

These places allow you to simply download the show just like you would anything else off the net. Simply follow the instructions and save the download to somewhere on your hard drive.

Most of these sites have limited free download capacity but if you're prepared to pay a few bucks then it's worthwhile. Rapidshare will give you a full years unlimited downloads for a lousy $55 US or $61 Australian (this is when you love a strong Aussie dollar)

My favourite is Megashares where you can by a card with 500 downloads and no time limit for $50 US or $55 Australian. That's a lousy 11 cents per show. I can live with that.

A couple of things to note.

1. The files are large. An average hour long TV show is 350 megabytes. It doesn't take long to go through your average monthly download limit. The good thing about these sites is that unlike torrenting you're not expected to upload.

2. large files take a long time to download especially if you don't have a fast internet connection.

3. If you're going to keep them you need storage space. However a one terabyte external drive which you can buy for about $130 stores a stack of 350Mb shows.

4. Look for files that end in AVI. If you download RAR files you are going to need a program (such as Winrar) to open them first. Shows that are split into sections are usually done as RAR files. They're not that hard to work with but like most things in life you need to work them out first. However, if your internet connection isn't that fast you may be better downloading in sections.

I hope this has been helpful. As I said, those who aren't that computer literate will benefit greatly by paying a few dollars. Try a small trial amount (perhaps a month) first.

Good luck to those who dare

  • by Sahara on March 03, 2010 at 10:39 AM

What 'Hot Seat' really needs is for Eddie to get out of a limo with no undies on or turn up at The Logies in a see-thru tux.
Re BingleGate, Beckala, if Max Markson says "it's ridiculous and not true", it's definitely perfectly plausible and probably completely accurate. I think Max Markson is like '30 Rock's "Rat King" except with Bogans. Bogan King if you like. You know, starts off with one Bogan client (Schapppellle for instance) and pretty soon he's got Bogans up the wazoo and they're all starting to graft onto one another. Vestigial mouths appearing in shoulders and the like. Let's just hope they keep dating cricket players and footballers. If there's ever brain cell enters that gene pool heaven help us all.
Looking forward to 'Desperate Romantics' on Sunday night (8:30 on ABC). Sounds good. Looks noice.

  • by darren on March 03, 2010 at 11:24 AM

please, please, peoples, download Top Gear from the interwebby thingy, it's Doubleplusverygood with no ads (and in true HD if you have the bandwith > 4GB each episode) !!

  • by davo on March 03, 2010 at 02:27 PM

Darren, stop giving Eddie ideas. We have no desire to see him without undies or anything see-thru. Yuck!

  • by Antigoni on March 03, 2010 at 02:50 PM

Oh Darren, how sweet. I remember the Austin Martin. My Mum had one. An Austin named Martin. She once brought down the front wall of my dad's favorite pub when she hit the verandah posts on a driving lesson. Dear old Austin, Martin. Didn't know Who-The-Hell-Are-You actually had one.

  • by Rupert on March 03, 2010 at 03:30 PM

Sat thru Top Gear last night. Now we know how they plan to get as little show as possible with as many ads as possible: delete any interaction between the boys oh and start the show late (Bugger, shoulda watched Colber Repor instead. Eddie, THAT is how you conduct enlightening interviews.
Has anyone else noticed how suddenly two stations are now not even bothering to show the end credits of certain shows, but just either the production company or distributor? "Bugger the viewer... more room for ads and they can't complain about being unable to read the credits."

  • by Furlozza on March 03, 2010 at 03:38 PM

I think you're onto something there darren. Max Markson seems to attract the biggest bogans. He also represented Corey Worthington who was the biggest bad boy bogan for about 5 minutes.

  • by bogan free zone on March 03, 2010 at 08:45 PM

Okay okay ASTON Martin. One of them metal boxes wif wheels. Looks a bit like a Ferrero. Geez.

Tribal Mind observes: Surely you mean Austin Powers?

  • by darren on March 04, 2010 at 05:49 AM

Aston Martin are actually bringing out something that DOES look like a Ferrero Rocher. Unless darren means a Ferrari? Or Ferris Bueller, ferris wheel or ferrous oxide?
What's with the onslaught of Blue Heelers episodes on Ch7/Prime late at night? Is Ch&'s local content looking dangerously low?

  • by Bereft Skerrick on March 04, 2010 at 08:26 AM

The Austin Powers? Is that like a Lantra?
Just recovering from reading that Max Markson is saying that Bingle is standing up for women's rights by suing Fevola and Women's Day. Hahahahah. It just gets Boganier and Boganier.
On a serious note, TM, I think you might be able to add last night's episode of 'Hungry Beast' to your Historical Moments in Australian TV list. I've never seen that on tellie before. Not at 9:15 at night. Although I'm not quite sure of what point they were trying to make. That porn mags should be allowed to exploit women in all their unairbrushed entirety? Maybe the point was to get bits on TV and letters of outrage to the ABC? Hmmm. In any case it must have been some sort of milestone. Kind of.

Tribal Mind asks: Can you be more precise about what was shown, while I search for it on ABC iView.

  • by darren on March 04, 2010 at 08:40 AM

Labioplasty, TM, Labioplasty. The viewer warning at the beginning was quite possibly another historic first in itself. It's on ABC2 tonight as a repeat.

  • by darren on March 04, 2010 at 09:13 AM

TM, I saw the Hungy Beast story that Darren refers to. Let's just say it was about plastic surgery to "women's parts". And quite graphic. It was too much for me, so I went off to bed at that point and hit record for the IT Crowd. Really felt it was in bad taste and not a story that needed to be told. I will have to think twice before watching Hungry Beast again if that is the type of story they are going to do. I am not offended easily but that was a bit too much. Even for the ABC.

  • by em on March 04, 2010 at 09:46 AM

TM, darren is sooooooooo right about Hungry Beast, MrsPJ was watching RPA which always has "medical proceedures" but NOTHING like the Hungry Beast "medical proceedures" of last night. The premise was that the female genatalia (spelling? female body parts not my strong point) are being surgically "tidied up", because "the board of sensors" "approve" of the soft porn full frontal photos of females with lets just say a "neat" front bottom, no superflous skin to be seen. The female reporter interviewed one of the members of the sensor board showing a number of photos asking if they would be sensored or allowed to go to print. They even filmed a surgical proceedure & the operatee certainly didn't look as though she was enjoying the experience.
Did I find it confronting?.....sort of
Was it serious journalism??......certainly
Is it a story we needed to see??......Any unnessary surgery purely for "appearance" sake seems ridiculous. But I'm not a woman.
Will I ring the ABC & complain??......no

  • by PJ453 on March 04, 2010 at 10:32 AM

TM: I watched Hungry Beast last night and their, erm, expose' on lady bits. Now I'm no reader of magazines of that genre, but I would have thought that the aforementioned airbrushing would have had more to do with what the readership prefers.
Magazines airbrush models thin, they reverse photos of people so it fits the formatting of the mag better (TV Week I'm looking at you - this weeks issue has that hateful Izzie from Grey's WAHHHHHnatomy with two pics, one the mirror image of the other) so why wouldn't they airbrush to make ANY part of the body look more "attractive". It's a tenuous link to reason that they do it to satisfy what the censors would allow.

Hi TM, can you please put SYTYCD figures for both wed/thur regularly? I'm a fan, thanks.

Tribal Mind replies Sure. I stopped because nobody seemed interested any more. In the chart above.

Re 'Hungry Beast', the viewer warning was very clear. Still, I was surprised at what they actually showed. Not offended. Just surprised and my main problem is that I don't understand what it was that they were trying to report on. The idea seemed to be that the AFCL board are responsible for men seeing tidied up women in soft porn and then pressuring their girlfriends to get themselves similarly photoshopped. So, if men just stopped buying soft porn and went straight to the more graphic stuff the problem of unneccessary surgery would be solved? I don't get it and I think if you're going to be that graphic you need to have a clear message at least. It could have made its point better and without being so graphic. Funnily enough I haven't seen or read any howls of outrage.

  • by darren on March 04, 2010 at 11:32 AM

Pretty sure SBS screened a documentary about labioplasty last year??

  • by 2paw on March 04, 2010 at 11:35 AM

Missed the Hungry beast controversy, not a fan of the show. Enjoyed Spicks and Specks last night. Also caught up with my timeshifted 24. Read elsewhere that Dicky Wilkins may be hosting the Logies - anyone else say disaster!!!

Also for ER fans tonight it is back to single episodes on GO!!!! as the programming buffoons have scheduled old eps of Top Gear. Just when we have finally caught up to the last season of ER they are slowing it down to one episode a week.

No TV for me tonight - timeshifting things for later viewing as I am off to see Mrs Elvis Costello in concert.
And yes TM I am pondering new categories for the Bogies.

  • by Cathy on March 04, 2010 at 11:58 AM

Bereft Skerrick, Ch 7 had been showing repeats of Blue Heelers from the start in the afternoons. Maybe ratings weren't as strong for the later seasons so they went back to showing All Saints. Viewers demanded to see the repeats of the last few season so 7 put them on after midnight. There's no contribution to local content quotas for repeats or after midnight.
I watched a recording of Hungry Beast at 10pm and was bored by the surgery story and fast forwarded most of that. Much prefer their satire and parodies. Their Avatar 2 trailer with the bit sthey nicked from other movies was a crack up.

  • by J Bar on March 04, 2010 at 12:19 PM

BTW in regards to "Has Hungry Beast gone too far?". Is there outrage on talkback radio this morning? Are there headlines screaming from the front page of the "Dailly Terror" website? If neither is the case, then no.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on March 04, 2010 at 12:22 PM

What 'Hot Seat' really needs is for Eddie to get out of a limo with no undies on or turn up at The Logies in a see-thru tux.
Darren, I may need some industrial strength bleach and wire brushes to get that mental image out of my mind. (But I might just pop over and nominate Eddie Maguire for a Bogie while I'm at it... Hmm, I wonder how many categories can have Fast Eddie as a nominee...)
Only caught a bit of TV last night, and it was Poh's Kitchen. Have to say I thought it was fabulous TV, but after seeing Neil Perry tea-smoke a chicken then dump it in a wok full of boiling oil to crisp the skin, then having Poh say "oh, I think anyone could do that at home" had me in hysterics. Ms Poh, anything that takes more than one pot does not get cooked at Chez TQD. (Well, not until the kids are old enough to help. Already got the little one flipping the occasional pancake.)
Kym, thanks for the info re: The Oscars! I shall be recording the live feed. (Mr Dale, a request in advance - can you please remember to tell us the ratings & the timeshifted ratings for this extravaganza? I'm just wondering how many other people will be timeshifting the ceremony.)
Regarding Top Gear, have Channel Nine shown any new stuff yet? (Apart from the Bolivia episode being shown in Adelaide.) It's just that when I see it in passing, it's always something I've seen before. This Tuesday it was the American episode. (Brilliant stuff, but I've already seen it.)

  • by tqd on March 04, 2010 at 12:31 PM

I will be recording the Oscars for timeshifting later - just so I can avoid Dicky Wilkins asking stoopid questions on the red carpet - also allows for skipping the boring bits

  • by Cathy on March 04, 2010 at 12:58 PM

tqd, re Top Gear, they have been showing a new episode followed by a repeat of a "special" the first week (pre-winter Olympics) was episode 1 of the most recent series plus the Olympics special. This week was ep 2 of the new series followed by the American special.

  • by Wendell on March 04, 2010 at 04:13 PM

First - oh the horror - driving home from work, exited the airport tunnel (Sydney) southbound, only to see something truly horrific: a billboard of the new Hey Hey Its Saturday - with Daryl Somers metres high! Made me want to gouge out my own eyes!! And how ironic that I have 999999 as my security code - I'll be cursing them every afternoon when I see that damn billboard!!
I too will be recording the Oscars - so I can fast forward Tricky Dicky too, but also because I'm holding my annual Oscars party - and I'd like to get to sleep before 1am!! We go all out with drinking rules, so it's always a fun and festive night, which will be made better by the fact that I'll still be able to get to bed at a decent hour!!
tqd, Top Gear has had new eps - but only for the first hour - so they had first hour with Guy Ritchie as star in reasonably priced car (I think it was the 2nd ep of th new season), then a repeat for the hour after - so the first week it was the Winter Olympic special, on Tues it was the US special. I'm assuming that they'll keep doing this, which is annoying - and I'm annoyed that they seem to be holding off screening the Bolivia special too!

Tribal Mind observes: So now we know who Channel NIne believes is the target audience for Hey Hey.

  • by Beckala on March 04, 2010 at 04:41 PM

Beckala: I hear there's a giant billboard of Tony Abbott somewhere around the airport as well. Will have to check out the billboards on my trip to Sydney/IKEA this weekend.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on March 04, 2010 at 06:33 PM

Yes there is a giant billboard of Tony Abbott in his budgie smugglers directly across the road from the domestic terminal exit (where all the giant billboards are) sponsered by GetUp and with the caption "Abstinence is not a Climate Position, Tony". You might want to get a tour group together. Just look for crashed cars and people in neck braces.
The 'Hey Hey it's 1982' billboard is a joint initiative with the State Government. They're trying to get people off the M5 and onto trains. Maybe 'Hey Hey' could be used for other types of aversion therapy? (If you kids don't tidy your rooms you'll have to stay up late and watch 'Hey Hey it's Saturday').
And yes, Bereft Skerrick, I meant Ferrari.

Tribal Mind asks: As in the chocolate?

  • by darren on March 05, 2010 at 05:54 AM

If you want to stay off the M5 and avoid that HHIS billboard, don't try the Princes Highway because they've hit that route with another big one around Sydenham/St Peters.

  • by arkie on March 05, 2010 at 07:57 AM

No, Ferrari the third Corby sister.
TM, have you seen 'Synechdoche, New York' (recent movie, now on DVD, starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Emily Mortimer, Samantha Morton, Dianne Weist etc)? If you're a fan of wordplay and overcleverousness it's well worth a look. Quite a brain breaker.

Tribal Mind replies: I attempted to watch it on DVD but dozed off after half an hour.

  • by darren on March 05, 2010 at 08:33 AM

Used last night to catch up on a few of the recordings :
Gavin & Stacey - really really funny, but it is a bit hard to get all the laughs due to the strong Welsh & Pommy acscents.
The Killing - More twists than answers, but great drama even with subtitles.
Durham County - Tension increasing by the minute, is the good cop really a bad cop??

  • by PJ453 on March 05, 2010 at 09:52 AM

HHIS billboard update - avoid James Ruse Drive in front of Rosehill.

  • by Mr Black on March 05, 2010 at 11:44 AM

Strewth! How much do those billboards cost them across town?

  • by Bloke from the Sticks on March 05, 2010 at 01:32 PM

Thanks everyone for the info re: Top Gear repeats. Obviously I keep on tuning in after the new stuff!

Cathy, I *like* watching Richard Wilkins fumbling on the red carpet. It's like a train crash, but fun. I will be timeshifting & fast forwarding through the ads, in the hope of getting to bed before ungodly hours. But no one coming over for drinking games, one can't afford hangovers when there are not-so-biggish children in the house. Their laughter cuts through you like a knife. Probably a glass (or two) of sparkling domestic and a takeaway pizza will be consumed during the show.

Have not seen any giant billboards with either Tony Abbott or Hey Hey It's Saturday. Am feeling slightly left out. And relieved.

Hoping to get out to see the new Alice in Wonderland movie on the weekend, but am worried I'll be disappointed. It's such a great book (a childhood favourite, and occasionally revisited), and no one's managed a decent adaptation yet. (But if anyone can, it'd have to be Tim Burton.)

  • by tqd on March 05, 2010 at 03:06 PM

We don't have billboards on the South Coast. Some of us don't even have telephone lines in our own streets in the middle of rural suburbia.
7 days until the return of the biffo and my beloved Dragons :)

  • by Bereft Skerrick on March 05, 2010 at 10:41 PM

Ahhh Bereft, you & your "beloved Dragons". If you could only have seen the happiness on my face in getting a sms while walking through Banff Canada on how the Mighty Eels had smashed the Dragons out of the competition last season. Priceless. Good luck anyway.

  • by PJ453 on March 06, 2010 at 09:47 AM

PJ453: ahhh but that was so last season, at least we ended up with SOME silverware!
Drove around a considerable part of Sydney today, no giant billboards of HHiS to be seen.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on March 06, 2010 at 07:39 PM

TM, do you have the capital city ratings for the AFL NAB Cup on Channel 7 on Friday night between the Western Bulldogs and Port Adelaide along with the ratings for Channel 10 and ONE HD's AFL NAB Cup coverage last night between St Kilda and Fremantle.
Cheers

Tribal Mind replies: in the charts now

  • by Dave on March 07, 2010 at 10:41 AM

Re Top Gear: It was ep 4 from the new season, as Guy Ritchie directed a movie which has been recently released in Aus, but I can't remember which.

  • by David Rose on March 07, 2010 at 10:51 AM

Looks all but certain that Mr Bridges will win Best Actor - he won yet another award - but Best Film will be VERY interesting to watch with the new voting system - ranking the films, so that if a film like The Hurt Locker is a lot of people's no.2 pick, it will take it out. To be honest, I think it will come to a fight between the exes - don't think any of the others will come close - but still, very interesting. However, if Avatar wins Best Film I fear for the safety of my television - as I will probably be tempted to throw my remote in anger... I think my viewing experience proved that if it's not in 3D, it's not worth watching - you just realise how horrifically bad the acting, writing and storyline are. Preferred Up in the Air and The Blind Side - by a LOT. Precious was utterly traumatising but amazing - MoNique deserves each and every award she has received - I have literally never hated a fictional character more. So I'm really hoping that anything BUT Avatar wins - give them all the effects awards, they deserve that much - but if it wins for film or direction - well, Mr Beckala has said he will be hiding the remotes to try to protect the tv.
arkie - I have no way of avoiding the billboard - I work in Maroubra, not the city, so I have to hit the airport tunnel to make it back to the Shire. Each time I've seen it (all of twice now, but still) it makes me MAD MAD MAD!!
