The ratings race, updated 10 am Friday
As you see in the chart, Channel Seven has a hit with the new Courtney Cox sitcom. What's fascinating is that men are watching as enthusiastically as women. Cougartown was top show of the night with men 16-39, women 16-39, men 25-54, women 25-54, and high income earners.
The only demographics which did not embrace it were Grocery Buyers (with whom it was number 3 after Seven news and Today Tonight) and people aged over 55, where it was the number 18 most watched show of the night (ie a huge flop). Perhaps if Cox played a 60 year old woman going after 45 year old men, it might have a shot with the senior demographic.

The ratings race, updated 11am Monday
Technically, Channel Seven had the biggest audience share for the first night of the ratings year, but it was really Channel Ten's victory. Thanks to Shaun Micallef and Julianna Margulies, Ten drew most viewers aged 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54.
Below, we publish the charts for some of the key segments of the viewing audience - young, old, male, female. It looks as if The Good Wife might be a nation-uniter, while Shaun and Hugh Laurie are nation-splitters. Go to Comments to tell us what you made of TGW. Will you watch her again next week?

BASIL BRUSH! Boom Boom! Wicked as ever. Surely the calibre of guests on TBYG can only go downhill from here.
I enjoyed The Good Wife and was most amazed to find it started on time! Also watched House, which was good though I did doze off. (Thank you DVD recording).
Thought that The Good Wife could get boring quickly, but they might have some interesting storylines to come as using Chris Noth to play the husband would be a waste and I can't see him doing bit parts these days.
Next Sunday will definitely be ABC1 with the Doctor (admit I've seen it already though) and then Monty Python.
Tribal Mind remarks: The Monty Python doco is already available to rent in DVD stores as a 3 disc set.
Not sure why there needed to be an encore performance of Good Wife before it even started. Will be interesting to see if it holds its numbers or if the public were caught in the hype. News from the US is mixed, as have been some of the views here.
On the subject of the encore may the fleas of a thousand camels infest their budgie smugglers where is Outrageous Fortune? Pulled half way through the series (I guess always knew that was going to happen) and replaced now with White Collar (after this weeks "encore"). Where am I going to get my Antonia Prebble fix now? :)
What is Nein doing!! All through the cricket yesterday (at least here in SA) they were advertising Top Gear Bolivia roadtrip for Tuesday night at 7.30 - 9.15 (it is in the Guide). The issue is there is cricket on Tuesday (from Adelaide Oval) which means all other states get cricket telecast. Cant see them screening premier special in SA before the rest of the country. Also indicates that it will contain 30 mins of ads - 75 minute episode according to BBC - 105 mins on Nein - we knew it was comming. This is why I wont be watching any of it on Nein.
I thought Basil Brush was a pain actually and felt sorry for Amanda Keller having to work with a sock puppet but still thought he had more to offer than Joe Hockey and Joelene Anderson combined.
I spent the weekend chewing through my brand new DVD of the 5th season of 'The Wire' and am now very sad because there's no more. Excellent to the end.
i agree, basil was annoying and the audience didnt laugh once when he kept trying to be funny. Great night for ten, goodwife rules, house is still really good and biggest loser was great aswell, all should grow next week as the bl grows
Will definitely give The Good Wife another go, but if anything resembling quality viewing comes on abc like The Dr (thanks Jen13) she'll be sent to the recorder for future watching. Turned over to Ch10 & there was Basil Brush, thought I was in some sort of time worpe, plus there must be an election coming on..... Joe Hockey?????
darren - bought season 5 of The Wire yesterday & will now protect it with my life. MrsPJ said "let's get it in Border's" aaaaarrrrrhhhhh the price........do you feel me?????
With Australian Story back on tonight things are getting back to normal.
Re Season Five of The Wire: yes I feel the price but don't care, it's well worth it. After I paid and was holding it in my hot little hand I felt like I was holding a bar of gold. Imagined a beam of light coming through the ceiling of Sanity and a chorus of Hallelujah. Funny that it was showing on Nine for free just a few weeks ago.... Probably that makes it doubly satisfying. People are willing to pay $5 an episode for something rather than watch Channel Nine. There's a point in there somewhere.
Interesting theme to the season about journalistic ethics which makes me wonder do the Igors at Nine actually watch what they screen and if so does it prick their consciences or just give them ideas for 'A Current Fictional Report'? No-one seems to care about that so I'll leave it alone now but yes, 'The Wire', perfect.
The Good Wife was good but will need to have decent storylines to keep me around. I can see how it could get quite boring quickly. It isn't "The Practice" or "Boston Legal" by any stretch. And Chris Noth seems wasted as a bit player.
House seems to have gotten back on track so lets hope for a good season.
The ABC will get me next Sunday and Ten will be sent to the IQ box.
Last night watched Australian Story and was quite moved by the story of Red Symonds son. Amazing really that he managed to keep that story out of the public for all those years. I hope Red's son goes on to live a long and full life. Now thats what I call an inspirational young man.
US tv ratings for the Super Bowl 105.97 million. Some math (14x popn) tells me that the equivalent in Australia would be around 7.5 million.
I will not back down from my love of Basil Brush!
Anyone else noticing the time creep of shows has started again? How is it a heavily edited show such as SYTYCD or TBL still runs overtime?
Have paid my money and am looking forward to the winter olympics on payTV in HD. Like the promise of every gold medal event, don't think Nine will do that on FTA. Don't like the promise of seeing every Australian compete (coming 20th and getting sports welfare doesn't do it for me). Hope the Pay telecast is not dominated by Nine C listers. Will keep all informed.
Yes em, Australian Story was quite inspirational & I liked the way it was really the son's story & not Red's. For one so young he showed such a positive mindset & attitude with just getting on with his life.
Oooh, is Doctor Who on this Sunday? Brilliant! Thanks for the heads up, everyone!
I do have to say that every Monday night I groan and grumble about needing an early night, and every Monday night I stay up watching Doctor Who. (Not that it's on past my bedtime, I just have serious Mondayitis that goes all day.) Even though I've seen them all before.
I was also enjoying Torchwood on Friday nights, ABC2. Am rather surprised - I thought the first season was a bit of a stinker - but I was gripped. I'm even liking Gwen now. Dark stuff.
Spent Sunday night enjoying Castle. (Not dark stuff.) Only a double episode is rather stretching the friendship on a Sunday night. Will have to record that next week, I guess.
And loving the Colberrrrr Reporrrrrr. But what is it with Monday's edition? It seems to be a repeat of a previous one? I haven't been watching consistently enough to work this one out yet.
tqd, it certainly seemed to be a waste putting a second new episode of Castle on at 10.30pm. This week it will be the new series of Scrubs at 10.30pm, set in a medical school now.
I find it fascinating that the commercial channels ran stories about the episode of Australian Story during their news services yesterday and then it got a massive boost. I don't the ABC or rival channels running free promos for Sunday Night or 60 Minutes.
Coberr Reporr only tapes 4 episodes a week (Mon-Fri US time http://www.interbridge.com/lineups.html#CR). A Tuesday airing in Australia=Monday taping in the US. Australian Monday= USA previous week. Same occurs for Letterman, podcasts etc.
Totally agree that Samuel Symonds is a truly remarkable young man and I'm glad I got a chance to learn a little about him through Australian Story. Our family went through the same trauma a few years earlier, unfortunately with a completely different result. Cried my eyes out watching him beat the odds my little girl couldn't beat. I'll be willing him on every step of the way and I wish him a long and happy life. What a great kid!
Regarding an earlier request for information pertaining to 'The Colbert Report' by tqd: 'The Colbert Report' is only on 4 nights a week in the U.S. (Monday to Thursday) which leaves the ABC with one night to fill. Presumably the episode we get on Tuesday nights is the one they get on Monday night so instead of showing their Thursday night episode which we get on Friday again on Monday nights, they seem to be rerunning the episode from the Monday before (the one we get on Tuesday).
Clear as mud.
What's so good about The Good Wife? I thought it was the most hyped up new show that turned out to be the biggest load of steaming rubbish that I've seen in a long time. Why do people believe the hype?
Tribal Mind asks: What should have happened in it to make you decide it was a good show?
Thought The Good Wife was so-so, could give it another go. Acting's good, but maybe a bit too much botox.
After discovering the Doctor's on this week, went on youtube to see what else David Tennant had been up to since. A guest appearance on Catherine Tate's show as Ghost of Christmas Present last Christmas! Being as Tennantish as possible: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yV56DJO6pH4
Wanted to give Basil Brush on T''BYG a good pull on his tail. Is Mr Squiggle next?
Sure the coverage on the commercial stations helped promote Australian Story, but their hijacking of the story really underlined the reason I imagine Red and his family let Samuel do it in his own words at his own time. I can imagine ACA and TT, sitting around "Frontline-esque" thinking about how they were going to get mileage out of someone elses story. How can they make a buck out of the misfortuneof someone? The story was even hijacked twice by the Daily Terror. The celebrity tabloid beast really needs to be put out of our misery.
Bereft Skerrick, this is exactly what Red Symonds said on radio yesterday when he was interviewed on 702. He had been approached loads of time re his son's story, but was worried about how the commercial stations would play it. Remember at the time his son was first diagnosed he was on Hey Hey.
On other more general topics, I forgot all about the Good Wife. Will try and do a catch up.
Re the double episode of Castle, disappointed that they would waste this. If 7 have to show double episodes, then play it instead of Bones.
I think I like shows that are more an ensemble and mix some comedy with the drama. The Good Wife had the drama but there was nothing I hadn't seen before. I also agree with the comment about a bit too much botox. It was really offputting that the lead actress couldn't raise her eyebrows or make many facial expressions. You can tell the Desperate Housewives get their share of botox but this was even beyond that. Maybe they should start giving their botox providers a mention in the credits of these shows now since it plays such a major role these days.
OZINOZ, I agree. Typical of 10 to yank Outrageous Fortune off. I'll just have to wait for the series to appear on Arena now.
I will be watching the last season of Lost, but not my partner who calls it "Lost the Plot". I've stuck with it this far, let's see where it ends up.
I did not mind the Good wife - although can already pick unresolved romantic tension - loved the investigator played by Archie Panjabi from Bend it like Beckham.
In answer to your question TM I am a Lost watcher from the beginning - will record tonight and watch later. Am confused on what is going on but that is what Lost is all about and I am happy to go with it.
I was happy with the double Castle on Sunday (but then again I had recorded it for later watching - as I was out for dinner). I watched it on Monday.
Yes, I'll be watching Lost (PVRing it, anyway). Glad it's the last season though. The tv guides indicate 3 episodes this evening back-to-back - is that right??
Tribal Mind replies: On 7TWO, the first hour is a "catchup" on the last season -- I don't know about you, but I definitely need that -- then there's the first two episodes of the final season.
TM, can you post the ratings of NFL Superbowl on Ten/One yesterday? Thanks.
Tribal Mind replies: In the Monday chart now, but you won't like it.
The Good Wife might have good acting but the storylines need to be better. Royal Pains has neither good acting or storylines. Now that was painful to watch.
Already saw Lost . Downloaded last week as I just couldn't wait. Will probably keep doing that as I love watching something like Lost without all the stupid ads. And I get it a week early.
My review of it without giving away any spoilers is that it still posed more questions than answers. Still I hear that it will settle down in a few episodes and start answering the fans questions. We will wait with baited breath!
As for last night's viewing, I am loving Kevin McCloud's Grand Tour on ABC. Makes me want to jump on the next plane to Italy to do my own Grand Tour. Superb!
"The Good Wife" was just not that good.
Does anybody actually watch One? I wonder how long ten will persist with this format. The "greatest sporting spectacular in the world" rated less than 35 yeear old repeats of Benny Hill. You never tend to see anything from their schedule anywhere in the ratings chart.
On the subject of Lost - looking to see it all tied together. Wish all series would have an end date in mind when they start so that they can keep the story fresh and it just not die a slow and lingering death.
Any news anybody out there regarding Outrageous Fortune, other than the story arc being axed in mid series. Still not happy - I want my Antonia fix :)
What happened to Top Gear's launch on Ch9 last night? I overcame my reluctance to let Ch9 air in my house and watched the Top Gear Bolivia special. It was one of the best ever and yet it's not in the ratings. Did all of the rest of you get cricket?
Tribal Mind replies: Yes, exactly. Top Gear was only shown in one city.
I am mostly disappointed that two of my favourite shows Castle and House are up against each other on Sunday mights but I couldn't care less about either Bones or Good Wife before them. I'm so spewing that this keeps happening.
Tribal Mind asks: Do you have any way of recording one while watching the other?
The Outrageous Fortune region 4 DVDs are available from New Zealand online stores. Not that you should have to buy them, but there's an option for you. The season was amazing. It is rare that a show keeps improving the longer it stays on air.
Another excellent Kevin McCleod last night, I'm with you em, it just wants to make you get up & go straight to Italy, Florence particularly. What an unbelievable show!!
TM - A question, read an article on smh/the diary this morning about "new timeshifting information" talking about ratings now adding in recordings. Does the figures you list include for this??
Tribal Mind replies: No, because I'm listing last night's programs, while the timeshift data arrives a week after the program was shown -- it reveals how many people recorded any program and then watched during the following seven days. I will be doing this week's Tribal Mind column (published Friday afternoon) on the subject.
Re : Top Gear (Rupert on February 10): When I saw that in the guide, I couldnt believe that Nein would screen that in Adelaide only - felt sure it was a stuff up. Would have been waaaayyyy more interesting than the cricket, so I guess we got the better end of the deal. That aside, 30 mins of ads compared to a 75 minute program (BBC website) - that is a lot of ads! Wonder when the rest of the country is going to catch up. Personally didnt watch it - vowed not to watch it on Nein after SBS got screwed over and you just know all Nein is going to do is have snippets of TG wrapped around their ad breaks
re top gear, already watched entire season 14 as BBC intended: no ads. It's good to see "Laughing at the Fatties" has bombed this year!
TM, what did the cricket get yesterday? The advertisers must be very unhappy with the poor ratings.
Tribal Mind replies: In the chart now, along with Top Gear
TM - If Top Gear was shown in Adelaide, how is it that "Adelaide" had 58000 watching the cricket???? Is there another Adelaide we haven't been told about?
Tribal Mind replies: Presumably Adelaide did not get the entire cricket.
How did 24 fare in the ratings last night? We've just watched it and thought it a tad predictable. Maybe now Rachel is back on the scene it will start to heat up.
Will also be recording Lost tonight and hopefully will catch up with that tomorrow arvo.
Tribal Mind replies: In the chart now. Looks like a lot of people were like me and didn't know it was on.
Reasons why this years Super Bowl became the most watched tv event - http://www.theweek.com/article/index/106118/Record_Super_Bowl_ratings_5_theories Big names, check. Insiprational stories, check. People with nothing to do, check. 75k not bad in my books considering its shown in the middle of the day to stay at home mothers - is the number for ONE only? I recall the Super Bowl was on Ten, ONE HD and ONE SD.
Tribal Mind replies: I have adjusted the chart, above, to include the TEN showing. I assume the ONE figure includes both HD and SD.
TM, I do have a 'prehistoric' video tape recorder that I still use a lot. I taped House and watched it on Tuesday. Mondays are way too busy with my other favourites, Desperate Housewives and Brothers and Sisters. I just get frustrated when my favourite shows get put up against each other while other nights I have absolutely nothing to watch, like Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. I have another dilemma for the next two Sundays with Doctor Who going up against Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation.
Didn't watch 'Lost' as I've never watched any of it and it occured to me last night any network that takes on this kind of series and stuffs it around even a little bit will pay for the next 5 years as anyone who hasn't been into it from the start can't get into forever more. The ratings can only go down.
Also forgot to watch Po's cooking show although I still think it shoulda been called 'Yeow! That's Hot!".
Good to see 'Hungry Beast' back.
Considering Top Gear got 165,000 in Adelaide this week, it looks like it's going to be a massive show next week. The factuals seem to have lost a lot of their viewers this year. Did Poh's Cooking beat Neighbours last night?
Tribal Mind replies: Poh won in Sydney and Melbourne, but not in other capitals, so overall, no.
Had a look at Poh's Kitchen last night. I thought she did very well. She has a good face and manner for TV and overall it was a nice little show perfect for the timeslot.
I quite enjoyed it.
Ten must be a little disappointed with those figures for SYTYCD. I would have thought, being the first Top 20 night, that it would have gone over the million mark. Obviously the timeslot does not suit. I think they need to move it back to 7.30 and perhaps leave Loser off for a night. 8pm start is a bit late for kids who would be a big part of the audience.
darren: Nice touch with "Yeow! That's Hot!", I'd like to add "with a big smile". Looks like a good replacement for Cook & The Chef. The rating figures look pretty good, considering it's up against the hard hitting current affairs shows. (Yes, I'm being sarcastic about "hard hitting")
After watching the show before it, Cheese Slices which was a lite foody show with a heavy aroma, I'm trying to think of a lite half hour show that I can pitch to the ABC, have it commissioned & then say "it has to be filmed in Italy to be really authentic" how much did a cheese show eat up the ABC budget??
Spicks& Specks - nice return show, slick
Hungry Beast - a little tighter & you can't get any more up to date with issues than the same day, well done.
Loved Poh's Kitchen and SYTYCD, though disappointed that both did not rate well. Maybe Poh's show will improve ratings-wise in the future due to word of mouth, as I only knew on Monday that this show would air.
Regarding Lost, there was a 'debrief' show on an hour before the season premiere which brought me up to speed and helped me understand some loose ends. It really helped and hopefully the ratings can get better for Lost as well.
Have not had a chance to watch Lost yet, had to also record Spicks & Specks and Hungry Beast ,whilst watching "Dance" live, which I would normally record so I can skip the ads but olnyl so many channels the IQ can hadle at once.
Loved Hungry Beast's Vancouver 2010 send-up becasue of melted snow and So You Think You're Gay skit was priceless.
Glory Days, the Hungry Beast skit was 'So You Think You Can Cry'. The judges asked the kid if he had a family member die, body issues or was gay.
Darren - I saw the Road last night - now I had not read the book but although I did not find the movie incandescent I did like, accepting it is very very bleak. I was unable to identify either Robert Duvall or Guy Pearce at first... The boy was whiny but I felt circumstances made him so.
Recorded Lost for later viewing. TM on your bet what are Avatar's numbers now?
Tribal Mind replies: So far so good: Avatar's total is now $99.7 million.
Really liked Poh's Kitchen, she's a natural in front of the camera - talkative without being annoying & the french pastry guy is good. Will keep tuning in for sure. I'd think ABC would be pretty happy with those ratings.
Hungry Beast is getting a bit better as well, except I wish they'd quit it with some of the self-righteous rants they do, like the bit about adults reading kids books. Its not funny, just annoying.
7's White Room looked more like a dirty grey colour. Sure did lack some spark, with 'panelists' trying hard to sound like an FM radio breakfast team... (I hate the way they all sound like they're having so much fun, when the laughter is so forced and phoney). Turned it off by 7.50 and went back to the Hard Drive selections from the past week. Reckon White Room will get moved to a late-night spot within three weeks. What's WRONG with 7's programmers this year ???
Congratulations to Channel Nine on another wise investment in Jernalism for that story on the guy who got bitten by a huge man-eating white poin........oh, sorry, wobbegong. Be afraid. Be very very afraid.
I stood on a bindii yesterday. Where the hell is Tracey Grimshaw? 60 Minutes? Nowhere to be seen. There's a story in there somewhere guys, come on.
Yes, when I think News, I think Channel Nine. What a joke.
And I think just one more shot of Eddie McGuire in a beanie and holding skis and smiling his stupid smile through digitised snow will send me over the edge. Try me.
The World Rally Championship with its fantastic coverage has moved from Fox to ONE. Day one is in the TV guides but I can not find day 2 or 3, hope they don't stuff it around.
Cathy @04:06PM, thanks for the feedback on 'The Road'. Maybe not reading the book is the key.
DragonLass @06:06PM, I really liked that bit on 'Hungry Beast' about adults reading kids' books and thought it's about time someone came out and said it's a little bit shit. I don't get this self-righteous thing at all. Everyone complains Gen Y has no social conscience, no direction, no work ethic etc etc etc but when they actually show they care about something people say it's self-righteous. How about 'enthusiastic'?
Re TM's bet: Ever the optimist! 99.7 - you're gone!
Poh's kitchen was nice to watch, but I struggle to find anyone who will do her / the Frenchman's recipes. Who's up for spending their Saturday afternoon making croissants? Lovely, relaxing TV but very much like an airline / glossy, luxury magazine - beautiful to view, but not practical. In that vein it is very similar to the cook and the chef.
I glanced at White Room for less than a minute and it is exactly FM radio. Given that the hosts and panel are from radio then that's all they can do. Not defending it but new TV 'talent' has a very tough time to breakthrough. Particularly in the Australia where depending on your point of view we only like 2 people - Micallef or Hamish.
I watch ONE, same can be said for all my circle of friends/family. We have one thing in common: we don't have a ratings meter.
I thought the SMH was a reputable paper, I didn't think it took what 1000 meters said as gospel!
Tribal MInd asks: In what article did the SMH say it would take 1000 meters as gospel? Sounds odd to me.
Didn't watch Cougar Town as I totally forgot it was on. Busy watching Dexter on Foxtel. One episode to go. Great ending last night and can't wait to see how he'll get out of this one!
Will record Cougar next week though as I am curious after those numbers.
By the way,TM, as Logie voting has started I wondered if you were going to do your version this year?
Tribal Mind replies: Thanks for the reminder. The Bogies will definitely be on again this year -- sounds like a theme for the next weekly column (this afternoon's will be about the shows we timeshift).
Feel free to start nominating now: the most annoying, embarrassing and disturbing people, programs and commercials of the past 12 months. Ideas for new categories would also be welcome.
Sorry Jbar I must have been to busy laughing at the skit and I did post the next day.
For everyone else, rhe judges had asked if he had had anyone die, to which he replied NO, then body issues NO, then finally if he was gay.
If you have wathced the auditions on So You Think.. then it is very good sendup.
Prior to the Hungry Beast skit, my partner and I could picture the producers going through the applications from the dancers going "Mother died on this one, must get that on camera, this one's had bulimia, that's gold and OMG!!!! this one's just a big girl"
Being "big girls" ourselves we loved it!!!!
Em - Give Cougar Town a miss. I watched it and cringed the whole way through. I definitely won't be watching again next week. Terrible, predictable, awful.
Lots of laughs with James & Oz last night, learnt that the US saying "2 buck chuck" was in fact about 1/ a winery (a very, very, very BIG winery that looked more like a coal loading facility & 2/ was about an actual wine-maker, I hesitate to call him a vignoron, he's more like a manufacturer who was in charge).
Then watched why Nirvana & REM were so big in the music business.....didn't learn much there, therefore purposely missing Cougartown. Not in the demographic anyway.
TM - At a cheap $15 a ticket it means only 20,000 have to go & see Avatar for you to lose bet #1. As Antony Green would say "I think Tribal Mind will have to concede that seat"
And seeing that the security code is all the 999999's, can't leave without a kick....I won't even watch the cricket any more.
Tim: for croissants I get into the car and head to the local Sara Lee factory outlet and stock up :)
Dear telling-it-how-it-is, let me tell you how it is. Sure 1000 People Meters is a bloody small sample (Saying this as a stats graduate) however getting all huffy at the SMH, and particularly TM, over the figures is a smidge asinine. TM provides these figures as a free service as a vehicle to encourage discussion and debate.
I suggest that if you know a more accurate provider of ratings details that provides a greater sample size then, apart from satisfying yourself smugly, the only service you'll be doing is to advertisers and programming gibbons who use them to determine advertising rates. Or should we move towards having people meters on every TV in every home. That would be double plus good.
As an aside, I don't watch ONE, none of my friends or family watch ONE, so I guess we'd cancel you and your huddled masses out. But only if I lived in an area where anyone gave a toss about what I watch!
Moving on, I suggest two new BOGIE categories:
"Who should be Bogies Host". With a range of contestants including Micallef, Adam Hills, Ed Kavalee.
"Most Annoying Weather Presenter". Oh how to split the vote between Fifi Pox and Steven "Mini Daryl" Jacobs.
Tribal Mind remarks: But I'm still waiting to find out where in the newspaper which is vaguely related to this website some journalist has endorsed a sample size of 1,000. The OzTAM sample size is 3,000 households, containing about 10,000 people, in the mainland capitals, plus about another 1,000 households in regional areas. For more details on OzTAM's current activities, click here.
And great, we have a new category already: "Most Vapid Weather Presenter (what kind of a job is this anyway, unless you're a meteorologist)"? More suggestions please.
I only watch ONE for the IPL Twenty20 cricket (coming up in march/april) other than that it only shows a SHOWER of American Offal!!
I missed both Poh's new show and "Cougar Town". It's not that I'm not in the demographic or that I'm not interested. I saw the ads for "Cougar Town", the timeslot just completely failed to sink in. Possibly because I'd seen the ads for sooooo many weeks (months, it felt like) that I'd probably given up paying attention to them.
Oh, I caught bits of Lost. I was completely confused. Just like old times. Might tune back in again next week, to see if I can wrestle some semblance of understanding from it.
darren (et al), to me reading kids' books is like watching trashy TV for most people. They're fun. I'm not up for a heavy read every time I pick up a book (hello, Mr Cormac McCarthy, I'm still in therapy over "The Road"). I read Harry Potter when I just want to veg out.
Currently reading "The Boat". Highly recommended, but I could do with some non-bleakness. (My deity. One story is even called "Hiroshima". You just know that one's going to end bad.) I've been breaking it up by reading one story, then going off to read something silly for a while before I get back into it.
Mostly timeshifting my viewing this week. Will catch up one day.
Kung Hei Fat Choy! everyone! Hoping to catch some celebrations this weekend.
TM, how about most annoying reality tv contestant/reality tv show?
Most annoying/tacky judge on reality tv?
Best/worst/tackiest Cougar (considering the hype around the new show, see about who we like/dislike/ridicule in the actual tv community).
Most overhyped new program
Best educational program?
Worst new show/Best New show
Biggest media scandal of 2009
(apologies if any of the categories are already used, been a while since we've looked at it)
Tribal Mind replies: Thankyou. When you use the term "reality tv", what shows do you mean?
Just for the record, the exact Hungry Beast skit was: Family troubles? No. Body image issues? No. Issues with your homosexualaity? Yes. {boo hoo hoo} "So You Think You Can Cry".
Avatar is doing brilliantly but it should be noted that Bran Nue Dae has done really well for the little Aussie battler that it is.
I actually liked the fact that The White Room had a few different people as panellists but then they had to chuck in Fifi Box who pops up everywhere. I like television and trivia so I didn't mind the concept.
We enjoyed the return of Lost, with the recap then 2 eps. I enjoy the twists and turns with the storyline - it's a show that will deserve to return again and again in syndication - one of the most clever genre TV shows I've ever seen.
Most watched TV event in Canadian history? Vancouver 2010 Opening Ceremony, average audience 13.3 million. Population 1.5x, equivalent in Australia = 8.8 million.
I have a suggestion for the Bogies. How about "Network that Stuffs Viewers Around The Most". My nomination would be for Nine, who has it down to a fine art!
And just wanted to say that I was pretty impressed with the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics. I don't usually watch them all but I did this time and it was pretty damn good. I do have a little bias as I have a connection to Canada, Vancouver in particular. My brother lives there and I have been many times. It's a beautiful part of the world and I am sure the Canadians will do a great job hosting. I just hope Nine's coverage will be decent.
Tribal Mind remarks: The point of the winter olympics is not primarily to encourage tourism to Canada, but to give Eddie McGuire something to do, to justify his salary.
Further Bogies suggestions should be made in the new week's forum. Go here.

I was on Ten for most of last night.
The Simpsons - wow Tony Hawk is looking old now. Always interesting to see the actors doing the voices - it's always a bit disconcerting to see how different they are to the characters. Similar experience watching a Family Guy dvd and they had some footage from Comic Con - very weird seeing the voice of Clevland (sp?) coming from a skinny white guy.
Biggest Loser - I think Hayley Lewis is a much better host than Ajay ever was. Not sure if that's an insult to Ajay or a compliment to Hayley.
TBYG - 3D bit was cute. I still don't know how they consider Joe Hocky as Gen X though.
The Good Wife - loved it. Julianna Margulies was great. Christine Baranski - very different role for her. Will be sticking with this one!
