The ratings race, updated 10 am Sunday
The "official" ratings year is about to start, and the stations are bringing back their hits and exposing their novelties. What's got you excited?
Personally, this column wants to see how Dr House survives the loony bin (Ten, late Sunday), whom Susan, Mike or Katherine is marrying (Seven, 8.30 Monday) and whether Issy or George or both are dead (Seven, 8.30 Tuesday). Couldn't care less about dancers (Ten, 7.30 Sunday), or fatties (Ten, 7.30 Monday) or masterchef-imitators (Seven, 7.30 Monday). No doubt your tastes are more discerning. Tell us about them.

The reason our chart today is graced by a pic of Jerry Seinfeld is that he was the creator of a show called The Marriage Ref, which apparently was previewed last night. Question for the forum: How does it look? Will it be the Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation of 2010?

Saw that new Underbelly promo. Snerk. Looks just as boobtastic as the last one. Won't be watching.
Ahhh Colin Firth, why dost thou forsake me with the last episode of Pride & Prejudice last night? Does this mean I have to dig my DVD out of the packing boxes?
Missed the promo on the marriage ref - saw endless ones on Underbelly - want to hit TV every time I see it (but I like my TV). Also caught a bit of the cricket - what is Jamie paying those commentators to promote the betting site? Disingenuous much!
Am seeing movies in cinemas this week in protest of the lack of TV choices (Its Complicated and Lovely Bones are on the schedule) - and I seem to be watching only the second digital channels when I do dive into actual programs once or so a week - ER and Ugly Betty.
The promos on both Nine and Ten are driving me crazy. Will not watch Underbelly no matter how much Nine tries to convince me. And I feel like I have already seen The Biggest Loser on Ten with their sneak previews going on and on and on.
As for movies, I saw "Up in the Air" with Mr Clooney the other night. Good film and he is so lovely as were his leading ladies. I did love that film. The only other films I have seen this summer are "Avatar" and "Sherlock Holmes". Wanted to see Lovely Bones but it isn't on at my local cinema anymore. Have to wait for DVD. I was pleased for James Cameron winning Best Film & Director at Golden Globes. He deserved it. Avatar is amazing.
Spent an enjoyable evening last night watching the first 8 eps of season 4 of 30 Rock which a friend had downloaded.
Alec Baldwin was right to win a golden globe, ditto Glee and Mad Men. On the side of all wrong things who on earth could justify The Hangover as best musical or comedy????!!!! Speechless.
So we say farewell to Top Gear from SBS. Nice little bitchy "up yours" at the end of the show, especially using Clarkson's quip about a big bag of money.
Didn't see the Golden Globes mentioned in The Guide so didn't watch them. Which channel?? Great win by Toni Collete though. Don't have to try & remember to record 30 Rock for the next 2 weeks now that the grunters of tennis is on Ch7.
TM does Ch7 get anything other than kudos for these 2 weeks of tennis seeing that it's non ratings time???
Tribal Mind replies: Fox8. Seven gets lots of advertising dollars, and lots of opportunities to promote its new shows.
I would have loved to have watched Ricky Gervais host the Golden Globes. Ch9 sent Richard Wilkins over to do the Red Carpet, but then that was it. No telecast of the Awards. I will console myself with Survivor tonight. This season has been just the best!
p.s. have spotted Love Actually on Ch10 schedule for later in the week. TM - on your advice I bought the DVD ages ago. The deleted scenes are so good. Such a shame they couldn't fit them in the movie.
Tribal MInd replies: Apart from the ridiculous gymnastics scenes, which stretch credulity too far.
"Tribal MInd replies: Apart from the ridiculous gymnastics scenes, which stretch credulity too far."
Oh yes, I had forgotton about that one.
Quoth Cathy: ...but I like my TV.
I so don't like my TV at the moment. Decided that natural colour is an optional extra last night. People with green skin. Hurrah for extended warranty, as this has been a complete turkey of a TV. (We're hoping that this time they give in and just give us a new TV. We've had major repairs once a year ever since we bought it.)
We ended up turning off the colour, so I got to be freed by truthiness in B&W. Yay for Colbert! Yay for remembering it's on *daily*! Is it making any impact in the ratings, Mr Dale?
I would have watched the Golden Globes last night had it been on FTA. I'm a sad sucker for an awards night.
And I, too, am thoroughly sick and tired of The Biggest Loser, and all I've seen is the promo. Repeatedly. YES! I KNOW IT'S ON! ALREADY!
Stayed up late reading "Vanity Fair". Excellent stuff.
i watched most of the Globes last night between the 830 and 1030 fox8 showings and i really liked it and ricky gervais, he is the best host i've seen, especially his joke at mel gibson's expense aka if nobody likes what he says he'll blame drunkeness
i think the hangover was by far the best comedy of the year and unlike darren i will be watching at least one ep of the marriage ref, i enjoyed the promo on 7two
my gripe is that i think jane lynch was robbed
Went to a friend's house to watch the Golden Globes. Was thrilled to see Toni Collette, Chloe Sevigny and Glee win. The swearing and abuse that was hurled towards the television when The Hangover won Best Picture Musical/Comedy could probably have been heard from space, it was so loud. For the life of me, I cannot begin to imagine how it beat Nine or Julia and Julia. Surprising that Sandra Bullock won - one theory going around is that it is similar to when Kim Basinger won the Oscar rewarding the average actress for an above average performance rather than rewarding an amazing performance. Her dress was unfortunately quite sheer - looked LOVELY in the photos, but when she was on stage, you could see her legs through the material not a good look.
Rest easy people, I read somewhere earlier today that the fiend who stole Lara Bingle's $250,000 Aston Martin has been caught. I, for one, will be sleeping much better tonight...
Nothing to report on the TV front nor have I seen any movies. I am, however, off to Tamworth tomorrow for some music festival thingy. God help me, but I think we are going to see Guy Sebastion. My ears are beginning to bleed just thinking about it...
Channel Shirl is advertising House as "the show you once loved".
Shoopie: speaking of Idols, didya hear the one about Shrieky-Lee ending up in the wrong hotel in Bali and finding a naked couple having a romantic moment? She's blaming the wrong room key, I would suggest that the couple probably ordered a ladyboy for their romantic tryst, and the concierge got confused.
Shoopie, I share your relief that the Bogan-made-good-mobile was found and the thief punished without mercy. It was a few tense and worriesome days there during the holidays where I couldn't sleep, couldn't eat wondering where oh where can it be and how will Whathername cope??? But it all turned out okay in the end and the correct balance of the world re-established. The only thing now is for Mike Amour on assignment tracking down manufactured news in Haiti to find some dusty survivor, preferably a photogenic orphan, and ask them what THEY thought when they heard Lara Bingle's $250000 sportscar had been stolen? But first another non-story about Prince Willie....
Is anybody else already really, really sick of the 'Prince William in Oz' coverage? While I was watching Ellen yesterday, channel 9 stopped the program mid interview to go to a breaking news story I thought it had been a terrorist attack or somebody important dying but no, it was because Prince William's plane had touched down. Then, the coverage oh, how fascinating. Camera pointed at the plane door while the reporter stated that when he arrived in New Zealand, he was wearing a suit. Then, she breatlessly stated that he was walking down the stairs, he's in a suit - oh wait, that's not him. It honestly went on for about 10 minutes, then every news break had the same images, and then following him around all afternoon - then channel 10 news had a ten minute story on him... Honestly, I don't know anyone who cares that he's even here. I have no issue with Prince William, but do we really need the breathless and gushing 24/7 coverage?
Big Love last night - that show is incredible. But I think, when I see it, that it's disappointing that Ginnifer Goodwin is ignored in the awards shows - she is fantastic too.
Those are really bad ratings for Malcolm in the Middle at 6pm. TM, can you please tell us how Neighbours is doing this week between Malcolm and The 7pm Project?
Tribal Mind replies:From tomorrow.
God, if I have to read/hear/see another story about Prince Willy I shall scream, or throw up, or something! I mean, really does anybody other than the most rampant monachist even care? Oh and the women's mags, who are no doubt salivating all over him?
As for TV, Survivor was good last night and I do like the Evil Russell. But noticed Nine is holding the final over for 2 weeks. Suppose that way they will be in the ratings period and can see if their new series of Villans/Heroes will have a chance of rating. I won't hold my breath for the 7.30 timeslot for that one. More like 10.30.
I was wondering how Alf and Full House are rating on 7TWO. Its good watching the old shows again.
Tribal Mind replies: In tomorrow's chart.
Has anyone here seen 'Breaking Bad'? I'm probably way behind the eight-ball here but by what I've read and the promos I'm looking forward to watching it tomorrow night.
And I can't get the promo jingle for SYTYCD outta my head. Driving me crazy.
And really liking 'The Colbert Report'.
Darren Breaking Bad is a fantastic show and definitely worth watching. A bit uncomfortable to watch at times but very clever and a real gem of a show. I will be watching it again.
Ten are in real trouble with Malcolm in the Middle and Neighbours recording some of the lowest evening ratings ever. Seems like 7TWO and Go! are having the biggest impact on Ten.
J Bar - I also think that Channel 10's own decisions are impacting on them as well. Most people are already sick of Malcolm in the Middle due to 10's saturation use of it - 5 and 6 times a day on occasions. Also - Neighbours. One of the weakest finales ever leading into a really beige and boring first few weeks - to be honest, there has been a huge dip after the strong storylines during the middle of last year - bringing back the character of Lyn Scully pretty much signified the downfall, at least according to the opinioins of the few people I know who watch it. Meanwhile - who knew that many people would watch Full House?
Got to catch ER tonight - damn it's a good show! That, plus the Big Love viewing i've been doing has restored my faith in television once again!!
darren, like you I am intrigued by Breaking Bad - good article in the herald about it today too.
Thanks vanessa re 'Breaking Bad'. I'm hoping it'll be a Friday night tradition like when I used to stay up and watch 'The West Wing' when the ABC showed the last few seasons. Ah, remember when they used to show television shows on the same night week after week?
I know the ratings season hasn't started up yet, but 2010 looks like being a dog of a year tellie-wise. For starters I just don't know if I can face 3 months of 'Biggest Loser' ads. Forget the actual episodes, the recaps and sneak-peeks and encore episode recaps are gonna do my head in. All that flab. So much cellulite. All that bloody inspirational music. Hayley Lewis (are hosts banned from having expression and inflection in their voices or just personality?). It's like having to sit through anti-smoking ads at the cinema. Repulsive. Luckily Colbert is on at the same time.
The 3rd of the Seven Ages of Rock on Punk Rock only confirmed why I didn't like punk rock when it came out. But the interesting thing was that many of the participants are still alive & quite coherent. Francesco's attempt at Turkish Wrestling was a bit ordinary......all that oil & hands down pants!
Will be giving Breaking Bad a go tonight instead of watching numerous people get knocked off in Midsomer.
Never got around to see Breaking Bad when it was on Foxtel so will see it tonight. I always thought it sounded interesting.
Also I finally have GO! Foxtel has finally gotten it's act together and it is now available to us who don't live in the metro area. So it is great to be able to record things like ER. Still one of my favorite shows of all time and the best medical drama ever made.
And Darren, I agree. Those horrid sneak peaks at TBL are driving me mad. Everytime they come on now I reach for the remote. I will not watch the show as I feel like I have already seen it. Overweight people being tortured and humiliated is not my idea of entertainment. Plus those half naked weigh ins. Shudder!!
Hi again,
Could you possibly post the figures for TNA Xplosion (OneHD), UFC Wired (OneHD) & NWA On Fire (7Two)?
Don't worry, I don't plan on asking for these on a weekly basis. ;-) It's just that wrestling/MMA reporter Dave Meltzer mentioned in his latest news update that with NWA On Fire being on 7Two that it will probably become the highest rating wrestling show in Australia, which I doubt. I'm sure the wrestling shows on Fox8 will pull in stronger numbers.
Thanks

Darn I missed 'I survived a Japanese Game Show' Must admit I'm whacked on tennis. Seems to be the only thing I'm watching. Saw the Golden Globes online, after searching endlessly for it, and Gervais should've been given more time as host. Quite a few of the speeches were flat though. But yay for the Glee win!
Breaking Bad is now on my must watch shows list for Fri, well done ABC2 for showing it. I suppose ofcourse that when it was shown first on Paytv it would have the spin that it was "a show that everybody with a tv would have seen it".
I'm actually beginning to wonder if there's some sort of in-joke over at Ten about 'Love Actually' and how many times a year they can repeat it. I'm sure it was on just before Christmas. I dare them to show it next Friday as well. I'd prefer to play along in some sort of inter-televisual gag than just assume they are shovelling crap. Even more astounding is that it's still being watched. I have hang-nails less familiar.
I also will be watching 'Breaking Bad' every Friday night. Interesting to see Bryan Cranston move on from playing a cartoonish Dad on 'Malcolm in the Middle' to a cartoonish Dad running a mobile crystal meth lab in his undies. Pretty good. And the setting in New Mexico is purdy. They have rocks for lawns. Best line: "F**k you. And your eyebrows!!"
Going camping this weekend, and I don't think I'll be missing any of the delights that the networks have to offer. Will be without the wonders of a TV until Tuesday PM. Board games. Cards. Jigsaws. And catching up on d/l'ed Torchwood & Being Erica on the laptop (you can't expect me to go complete cold turkey!)
Tribal Mind asks: But will you be able to go online? I rely on you to enter the Australia Day limerick contest which I'm starting in the Who We Are section of this blog.
TM:Incredibly, They showed Love Actually AGAIN
Kezza:Incredibly, 560,000 watched Love Actually AGAIN
Mr TM, can you please keep telling us how badly or well Malcolm in the Middle and Neighbours will be doing over the next week. Am really interested how they fluctuate on different nights of the week.
Couldn't Seven find any contestants for My Kitchen Rules that weren't anglo? Hardly representative of a diverse Australia in 2010. At least Masterchef had a more accurate representation of Australia today.
Yes, to those without Foxtel, season 3 of Breaking Bad is due to start in April on Showcase. You won't have long to go with Season 1 as that was the year of the writers strike so it's only 7 eps long.
But you can why Bryan Cranston has won two Emmys for this, even if he did beat Michael C Hall each time.
Breaking Bad, Good! Love, Acutally Bad. Great movie but really Ten, how many times must you show it. Everyone who likes it would have it on DVD by now.
I think Ten needs to go away and rethink it's programming. Quickly.
Last Midsomer Murders this Friday. Will be interesting to see if Silent Witness gets the same ratings.
Tribal Mind observes: It never has before. MS is comforting; SW isn't.
Its hard to see why, with what's on offer at the moment, SBS's Fixer doesn't attract more then 115K viewers as it is probably the best drama on FTA TV at the moment!
On the subject of SBS, there are some things they do better then any of the other networks, things like news and current affairs (since the ABC has given up any pretension to be anything other than just another junk news/sport presenter in a format which pretends we live on planet Australia/USA), sport, where they present the stuff you won't see elsewhere, like the Dakar rally, Cycling's Tour Down Under from Adelaide which once again was a terrific event with several stages shown live, much better then any alternative on air at the time and a real people's event if the number of spectators was any indication. This event would give considerably more bang for their buck to the SA Government in backing it then F1 or V8 Supercars which have no real audience participation for their "street circuits" and major real losses attributed to each event with pie in the sky attendances belied by what can be seen on the box with the near empty stands.
What I am really trying to say is that there is some good TV out there, even in these holiday times, but for some reason people/viewers seem to have forgotten how to use their remotes to do a bit of channel surfing to see what else is on.
Perhaps it's because the damned things are so complicated these days, and the education system being what it is, the controller of the remote has only been able to master one of the buttons on the thing, the on/off one, the others are to complicated to work out.
Hi Zjonn, I guess we should all move to Sensible-Land where TV Remote 101 is taught in Kindergarten, all TV remotes are interchangeable and have a "battery low" indicator. All "AA" batteries have the same voltage and all digital displays have a battery backup. You plonk your kid in front of the telly, hand over the remote and watch the channel surfing. iPhone101 is taught in Primary school, that's when you should start to worry, and not just about myopia or obesity.
You know, I hate to winge.....
but some of Seven's coverage of the Aus Open is crap. I wonder do US Open matches only get fully broadcast if they star American players and if the match doesn't run past 6pm? The Andy Roddick V Cilic match yesterday was a cracker but they cut to the news and 'Today Tonight' just as it was getting exciting and then Roddick went on to lose, a bit of an upset, no? But we didn't get to see it because there were fatheads on haviana-shaped lilos to film and anti-immigration 'reports' to be had. Drives me nuts. If it was a pissweak match with Lley-Lley the news would have waited. As lovely as Chris Bath is, dare I call this kind of behaviour UnAustralian?
Oh, and congratulations to 'Sunrise' for giving air-time the other day to that fathead Lord Monckton and his fathead Climate-Change-Denier conspiracy theories and then opening the phone lines for the Sunrise Family to have their say. Next week: Gravity: Fact or Fiction?
And also: who came up with the caption "Jacked Off" in response to Ray Martin's call for the Union Jack being removed from the flag (on the news again)? As far as I know, being "Jacked Off" has an entirely different meaning, one not suitable for broadcast.
I think that's it for now.....
Hey, TM, do you ever look at radio ratings? Listening to the Hottest 100 with my friends yesterday, we were pondering what the true listener demographic for Triple J is. While they claim to provide an alternative for the teens to 30s, I suspect most of them are listening to commercial radio and the real JJJ listeners are 25-45. Also, do you have any idea how the Hottest 100 rates?
(I should add, I'm 37 and my fellow Hottest 100 listeners yesterday were 31, 36 and 41. None of the youngsters at my office listened...)
Tribal Mind replies: Good questions. Unfortunately, the radio ratings are done on a monthly basis by the old fashioned and unreliable diary method, so they only give overall figures for time slots, rather than specific programs. The next time radio ratings come out, I'll discuss them in this forum.
Darren could not agree with you more re the tennis coverage. My biggest gripe has been the poor commentary - especially during the men's matches. Todd Woodbridge and Tracey Austin have been far superior in the commentary on the ladies' matches. during the men's matches I find myself asking - will Roger Rashid say something that is not a cliche? Will he continue to contradict himself in a single sentence? Can Jim Courier be even more patronising in his comments and his post match interview? Have these commentators actually watched any of the TV shows they are flogging?
Over the weekend I was away and have access to satellite TV. This meant I was watching the tennis on Seven Central (Qld). I was very surprised that the tennis is broadcast at 7.30 at night QLD time (ie 8.30 Melbourne time). Why? Especially on the weekend, even if you allow for the news at 6pm surely they could show the tennis matches live in Queensland. At least Nine shows cricket live into each state.
Wendell, the Hottest 100 has become my routine on Orstraya Day too. I'm beyond 30 but I still think JJJ plays better music than any commercial. I imagine the audience must be quite huge considering over 1 million people went to the trouble of voting. If it was something like 'Aus Idol' you'd think that would translate to 4 or 5 million actually tuning in. Maybe.
Hey TM - how is the "re-booted" Sunrise doing? Has it made any difference ratings wise?
Tribal Mind replies: Bit early to say, especially since yesterday was a public holiday (303,000 viewers). I'll give comparative figures vs Today from now on.
Wendell, the links below will show you the volatility of JJJ's audience in the last survey (Sydney) and may explain the unexpected choices for Triple J's top 100. JJJ has lost a chunk of younger listeners which may have been picked up by Nova. Traditionally TV and Radio audiences change considerably during the Summer months for a variety of reasons. The "stars" go on holiday and people have more time to "dial-twiddle" and sample other stations. Talk stations go down and Music station go up. Strangely, when the holidays are over the majority of people go back to their old habits. It's the silly season.

Just looking at those figures for Neighbours. Looks to me like Malcolm is killing Neighbours. Ten needs to reinstate Simpsons fast. I know Neighbours figures have been down for years but these are plalin awful. Whereas H&A get double the viewers. Where did all the Neighbours viewers go? Have they all been on holidays or gone over to TT or ACA? I'm just curious. I wonder how long till Ten dumps it?
Where is my Waking the Dead?? Has been in the guides for the past 2 weeks and yet again it has been bumped for repeats of Cold Case (which are the US rip-off of WTD) At this rate it will not see light of day before being bumped out of the schedule again. Not the same since the lovely Claire Goose was knocked off, but still... Bugger
Nine did the cutoff as well yesterday with the cricket. If anything, it was MORE annoying as there was only 3 or 4 balls left in the innings..., but Bill made the announcement that "Sydney and Melbourne viewers will now leave us for their news".
Thanks for the links Les. Sure enough, the biggest demographics for JJJ are 25-39 (900,000 listeners) and 40-49 (700K) with only 600K aged 10-24. The stats are skewed by a few factors (older people listen to more radio generally, each demographic will not contain the same number of people) but I can certainly conclude that JJJ's audience is spread quite evenly from the teens to the late-40s. Interesting.
By the way, I'd like to say to those people who post on other blogs and websites complaining that the Hottest 100 didn't include any music they like/anything from the ARIA chart etc: "P155 off - if you're not a regular listener, the Hottest 100 is not meant for you. 2Day FM can do their own chart if they want, which I'll gladly ignore."
Surely it must be a record - Waking the Dead was listed for 3 consecutive weeks on Wednesday nights but never screened and now is gone from next weeks schedule. Surely that beats Yasmin and the FAD's (Fat A** Dancers) to never screen an episode after advertising.
Muppets!!
What am I looking forward to? Not much. I'm not a committed fan of anything at the moment (except Doctor Who!), so I'm pretty meh about any returning shows. (And beyond meh for the endlessly flogged ones on Channel 10.) Not a single new show promo has snuck under my radar and made me sit up and take notice.
Maybe this will be the year I finally finish watching everything on the PVR. (Caught up with a Mad Men ep from May over the weekend.)
Okay, maybe I am a teensy bit excited about Mad Men returning. And Glee. Although I don't know when they'll be back.
I forgot about JJJ's Hottest 100 this year. I must be getting old.
What am I looking forward to on TV this year? Well, the return of Dr Who.Even though I have already seen the last of David Tennant's Doc I am still looking forward to seeing the new guy. Also can't wait to see the last season of Lost. Wondering if all questions will be finally answered as promised. We will see.
Also looking forward to House, but you can keep Greys and Despos, really not interested. May have a look at SYTYCD but won't be watching TBL or any Masterchef wannabes over on Seven. Will have a look at the new "V" on Nine but if they stuff it around and I like the show I will download. Not willing to put up with nonsense from Nine anymore. And am not happy about them having Top Gear. Stuff it around Nine, and I am gone!
Also hope to finally see the rest of season 14 & 15 of ER . I hear the final season is great and even George Clooney makes a return visit.
And as always will no doubt see a lot of ABC and SBS as they still tend to have the most interesting shows.
Hopefully, lots of happy viewing this year!
Looking forward to: 'The Insiders' and 'At the Movies' so my Sundays can be returned to the routine to which I have become accustomed. Sunday Arts will be missed. 'Hungry Beast'. 'Modern Family' on Ten (supposed to be good), 'Glee', 'MasterChef' (if they can regain whatever it was that made me watch last year and which wasn't in the celebrity version), the last 3/4 of the Federer versus Davedenko quarter final from yesterday where Roger Perfect was trailing by a set and things were just hotting up and then we went to the &*#** news. Gone forever.
Not looking forward to: Channel Nine, 'The Biggest Loser' (they should have viewer warnings on the ads), SYTYCD (except the auditions if there's not too much weeping), 'My Kitchen Rules' (the more they promo it the better it aint), anything with a number in the title or 'World's Greatest/fastest/best/funniest/biggest/most desperate',....
tqd, not sure if you have Foxtel but season 3 of Mad Men is back in April. If no Foxtel, call SBS and demand season two now!!!
Am looking forward to, actually am foaming at the mouth waiting for Lost!
does anyone know the reasoning for putting it on 7two? won't the ratings just move to 7two from 7
And what exactly were the 'unexpected choices' in the Hot 100??
i loved the countdown Sia LaRue ArtvsScience Mumford & Sons Lily Allen Hilltop Hoods , songs played with their intented lyrics
To ER fans ET from Sea Patrol will be joining the show in a few episodes as a doctor, Aussie accented.
Tribal Mind replies: Lost will move to 7Two because it flopped on Seven, lapsing from 2 million viewers when it started to 200,000 last year. The ratings, such as they were, will probably move to 7Two, but Seven doesn't care, because 7Two, like GO, is a dumping ground for stuff the network can't be bothered with but is contractually committed to show.
Let us Lost fans pray that Seven keeps Lost in its timeslot until the end of this season, so we don't have to negotiate the ethical and technological difficulties of seeking it through the torrents.
Re TM's "Lost" sentiments... hear, hear.
Can we have any more ratings for Neighbours please? There has been some speculation on other forums that 420,000 on Tuesday was the lowest ratings for the show...ever. Could it go any lower this year with so many more digital channels?
Tribal Mind replies: Did I forget to include Neighbours yesterday? Sorry. It's there today.
Today must be pleased with those ratings! Even though Sunrise is in front, Today is flogging them in Sydney and Melbourne. Not even Grant back on weather and a new set is going to save the sinking ship.
Shame about the figures for 7pm project - I like that show.
Looking forward to Season 2 of Being Human. And not much else. Even *gasp* the return of TBYG. Will watch the Doctor Who Tennant finale on FTA. All my energy at present is being put into packing/moving house and Master 5.5 being inflicted on Kindergarten.
I finally turned Sunrise on this morning when I got up (first week back at work - need to see what weather is like to wear "proper" teaching clothing). New set - meh - not sure why the big fuss, really not that spectacular that they needed the whole ad campaign and a week to reconstruct it. Fifi Box as entertainment reporter - meh, all she did was ask Nelson Aspen the same questions Mel and Kochie used to ask him. And for some reason they spent fifteen minutes talking about whether men should have to wear ties or not - dear god, it's enough to make me turn back to Today - I hate the robot that is Karl.
My morning commute has been RUINED with the loss of Merrick, Rosso and Kate Ritchie. Shrieky Lee is so so so self-absorbed and boring and keeps talking over the funny Merrick - just left me frustrated.
What i'm looking forward to - lots of things! I am one of the few looking forward to SYTYCD - but that's because in my younger days I had dreams of being a professional dancer til I stuffed my knee. Will tune in to Biggest Loser, but the 7:30pm timeslot instead of 7:00pm means I probably won't end up seeing a lot of it - which I think will play a big part in their inevitable downfall. Looking forward to Greys, Brothers and Sisters and Desperate Housewives, and The Good Wife on channel 10 looks like it has potential. What I will not touch with a ten foot pole - My Kitchen Rules - I just hate the big billboard signs around stating "Go NSW" - I couldn't give a crap if those people win or lose, and trying to turn it into a state vs state thing just means I instanly want to turn away. That show on Nine with the chk chk boom girl (The Heist? The Take? Something about scamming people) makes me want to throw things at the tv. I have had Neighbours on in the background while i've been working the last couple of nights and dear god it is getting worse and worse and worse.
There's probably a few more that i've missed, but I've got playground duty so I'll cut this one short! Happy Weekend TMers! And good luck to Master Skerrick...
Lost flopped on 7 because it was riddled with 20 mins of ads interrupting the flow plus it was moved around & around .Watch it as a d/l or from DVD & its a different show.TM please be fair. We do not get preview dvds as do the reviewers etc without breaks. Please review shows as we see them. Also note our so called HD versions are inferior to the original USA release which spoils the image quality, detracting viewers in OZ.
Have been watching The Wire on ABC2 - has been quite good. Would love them to get a couple more series. Nein just stuffed it completely. Disapointing that it finishes next week. Any ideas on the 7(2) program The Reaper. Certainly not one fo the best but also not the worst around. We have only seen 13 episodes of the 31 available. It has been yanked for 24.
On the subject of what to look forward to, am pleased Burn Notice is back - can never be too much Bruce "The Chin" Campbell on the box. House started to loose its way last year, just hope they have managed to fire up the GPS and get back on track. Weary with Lost, but plan to stick it out just to see what it is all about (my tip it is all a booze induced trip on the original flight and Jack wakes up just in time to land). have been enjoying The Fixer - Jody Latham is quite good, after his stint on Shameless (which I am looking forward to seeing back). Like Bereft Skerrick, enjoyed Being Human and look forward to season 2. Apart from that, just hope their are some decent UK crime drama on the horizon (seeing as we have been shafted with Waking the Dead)
Doug (12.50pm), dry your Lost-fan eyes. TM has always been a huge fan and promoter of Lost (I'm sure he's called it the best tv series ever). Read his post above again and you'll see he claims to be a fan. But we agreed a long time ago on this forum that the viewers disappeared first and that was why 7 stopped caring and started shuffling the show around and treating it like crap. Adverts can't be the reason the viewers left - they put up with them in every other show. The great unwashed just won't stick with a true serial for more than a season or two. They get bored and impatient. Also, lots of people got put off when they realised they had been tricked into watching sci-fi ("Yuk"), another issue we've discussed here.
Plus, even us fans have to admit that the show rather lost its way after season 3... Still, I'll stick it out for the final season, having come this far.
Ozinoz, Wikipedia says that the ABC has purchased the rights to show all 5 seasons of the Wire (although there is no citation). Is that right TM?
One of the better quotes this week came from the 7PM Project when, doing a story on Apple's new IPad, the show's real anchor, Carrie Bickmore, questioned the thinking behind the name of the thing as she couldn't get her thinking gear beyond the simple fact that she related it to women's sanitary pads. I doubt very much that she would be alone.
Funny year, this year, TV content wise, not one of the networks previewed new shows during the "non ratings" period. I must confess that I am looking forward to some of the old series returning with new shows.
As to Waking the Dead, I got sick of waiting on NINE to actually do something with it on 9 or 99, it hasn't happened so I procured the lot, something I prefer not to do but my patience has run out.
Glory Days, no Foxtel in our house. I just can't bring myself to pay for TV that seems to be filled with crapola. There's enough good stuff on FTA for me to feel overwhelmed as it is! There's a reason why I'm still watching Mad Men from May 2009 - I've had no time to catch up!
I do have to say I've found one series to get excited over - Kevin McCloud's architecture series starting this Tuesday on ABC1. Even saw the book in the bookshop today, nice and glossy.
Shock Horror! New Channel Shirl promo, which has a support group for jaded celebrities, is being seen as making fun of people with Mental Illness. Just ask the Daily Terror. Right next to the story about UFO clouds.
iPad. Never thought of it, but after listening to an ITable skit on the radio last night am surprised it was never thought of before. Or would that be considered demeaning to women?
What I'm looking forward to this year......mmmmm have to include MrsPJ.
House (MrsPJ) - I just hope they put him a straight jacket fill him full of meds & he quietly goes to sleep for a long long time.
Despos (MrsPJ) - Another show that does nothing for me.
Greys (MrsPJ) - They could all die as far as I'm concerned.
Bros & Sist (MrsPJ) - Each & every one of them should go & get some friends. They spend far too much time together.
All the others you mentioned TM won't be showing on our tv if I have anything to do with it.
I'm sure ABC & SBS will keep me going for the year. Like you tdq Kevin McLeod's Grand Tour next Tues will be a must watch. Fri will be Torchwood & Breaking Bad. If anything else raises my interest I will certainly advise.
Actually the official ratings race starts on Sunday Feb 7.
every time the latest Grey's promo comes on with George and Izzie gravely ill, I invariably find myself yelling DIE IZZIE DIE!!!! at the screen. Yeah George can die to and the actor can disappear into mediocrity.
Several have commented above about the morning TV shows. IMO News Breakfast on ABC 2 is clear and away the best of the FTA shows. As if a new studio set makes a difference when you are broadcasting news. Sunrise and Today both need to put some work into their content.
According to Stephen Colbert, the name 'i-pad' narrowly won the day over 'Tampod'.

Without having seen 'The Marriage Ref' and detecting no desire to do so, TM, my only (intuitive) response to your question is: unlikely. Maybe it can be the 'My Kid's a Star' of 2010 instead? I thought we were getting the Sevenised (Seinfeldless and humourless) version?
I feel like I haven't seen any television for years. Over the hols I only really bothered withe occasional episode of 'The 7PM Project' and recently (joy!) ''The Colbert Report'. But I'm really really really looking forward to seeing 'Alf' and 'Full House' tonight (see the Olsen twins reach their target weight before outgrowing their diapers!). I'm wonder if these critically acclaimed gems of televisual genius have dated? Like a Hypercolour t-shirt is my guess. Note to 7TWO: 'Old' is not the same as 'Classic'. Just when you thought they'd scraped the barrel dry, they find muck underneath the other muck.
By the way, I read an interesting little book about Australia over the holidays. Can't remember what it's called but it's a fun read. Nine's promo spiel for the upcoming (it's at about epiglottal level as we speak) 'UnderBelly 3 - Murderers, Rapists, Prostitutes and Drug Dealers Get Sexier' is absolutely hilarious. Just you wait.
