The ratings race, updated 10 am Monday
Three weeks ago, drowning in the political turbulence that engulfed the nation at the time, this column asked readers to create brief verse involving our current, potential and just passed leaders.
The prize is a reference work called The Little Book of Australia, to be published on January 26, 2010. Below you can study the three winners (who should be so kind as to send their address details as a not-for-publication comment). To read all the other entries, go here.

There once was a zealot called Tony,
Who spouted a lot of baloney.
Then Malcolm was 'spilled',
And Tony was thrilled:
Voted leader by just one small crony.
Bereft Skerrick
To show our Fearless Leader has hope
Beloved Kruddy does the work of the Pope
Not left up to Holy Father
Deiify McKillop, Kruddy'd rather
Another celebrity ticked off, what a dope!
darren
Over the NSW leadership they battle
As their brains like the Tangaras rattle.
Sartor or Rees?
There's the eyes, here's the fleece.
Now, pull! while the booths fill with cattle.
Because pulling's their game-
Their right arms are lame,
Bending over's inflamed the lumbago.
They're fatcats in plaid,
Kristina, Obeid,
Frankie and Eric and Joe-Joe.
And when the bridges fall down
And the bus rides through town
Have slowed to a mutha in trickle,
We'll remember with frowns
That that carful of clowns
Was our fault. It was us made that pickle.

The Drake & Josh Xmas Movie premiered on Nickelodeon with 69,000 viewers and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on Playhouse Disney was seen by 55,000 people.
Adults liking the police procedurals and whodunits were also well served with 112,000 people watching Midsomer Murders on UKTV, 98,000 viewers watching NCIS on TV1 and 91,000 people seeing Law & Order on W. In sport, Live: Football: A-League Melb v Syd was watched by 70,000 people and Live: Cricket: Ford Ranger Cup was seen by 58,000 people (both on FOX Sports).
"Subscription TV continues to dominate the summer TV landscape with more viewers around Australia than any of the other networks. Yeah the wrestling would have been TNA Explosion.
I put a message in the other thread for TM but it didn't get answered ... "for something completely random, how many people watched this $1 telemovie called Bad Manners on early Sunday morning (2am-ish on Seven)?"
A bit of morbid curiousity haha.
Tribal Mind replies: My evil twin on "the other thread" didn't realise you were asking a question. He thought you were making a rhetorical observation about how few people would ever watch such a thing. I will now go back to the other thread, reread your question, check the ratings files, and attempt to give you an answer. But just out of curiosity, what do you mean "$1 telemovie"?
On tonight on 72 is, if the pilot shown last week is any indication, is probably the best bit of comedy since The Vicar of Dibley, a Pommie sit-com where the one liners are fired one after the other at a phenomenal rate, a very funny show called Not Going Out, on just before repeats of Judge Deed.
If you can get it, give it a look, you won't be sorry.
For the benefit of d@gp, ONE HD is simulcast on 12 SD so if you want to record anything there with a SD PVR, use the 12 SD channel.
re: d@gp at 08:50 AM - you need to ensure your HardDisc recorder is actually HD capable. Certainly not all of them are; most being standard digital SD. My Topfield isnt, but then again there is nothomg one One that I would ever want to record (the only digital chanel that isnt SD simulcast).
Cheers
$1 telemovie - a movie that has nothing interesting and that could have been easily made by a university student for next to nothing.
Thanks TM, Zjonn and ozinoz for the help. Spent an enjoyable hour or two this arvo on hands and knees greeting daddy long legs whilst unplugging and replugging various cables, plugs and fred's on the back of my Pioneer DVR 560Hx after realizing the little box that kept popping up on screen was saying the "DVR would not accept High Def pics". Shoved in an aerial splitter, found One HD on 12, Go! on 88, 7TWO on 72 and an abundance of SBS signals - 4! Count them... FOUR!!! Much clearer picture from the Newcastle Relaying Digits and Sydney has improved out of sight.
Now we can enjoy the same, bland old crap in much clearer widescreen and the Foxtel signal through the anal-log component of the DVR.
Also discovered Pioneer ain't making DVR hard drives any more... I wonder why???
Oh, the Hulkamania programme "wasn't edited in time for broadcast." (Hello???)
New Years Eve is being mentioned as the new screening date.
Perhaps they really mean April Fools Day...
Was glad to read in the SMH this morning that Nine (or GO!!!!) are showing the third last and second last ( I was gonna say the antipenultimate and the penultimate but that sounds a bit sucky) episodes of 'The Wire' tomorrow night in a special double episode because you know, it's such a low quality script and the acting's so shit and no-one thinks it's any good at all so why not cram 'em together and get it over and done with, right? No, I'm not gald because I will stay up and watch television past 7:30 pm for a change, but because only one more episode and they can finally release the DVD. Or maybe they'll hold over the final episode for a few more months. Who knows? Afterwards, Nine can go die in some piss scented corner.
I've decided this is Venting Week. Next week I'll put on my Christmas Hat but this week I'm bloody angry. Just for a change.
d@gp: I remember the good old days for the wrestling (1984?) when it used to be a family staple of viewing on Ch Shirl. , back when it was plain old Channel 10. Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake and his scissors, George "The Animal" Steele eating a turnbuckle or 4. Sure it was scripted and fake, but there was none of this women wrestline rubbish. Now equality is a good thing in some ways, but there's just something not right about the current women wrestlers.
darren: I heard that Pioneer was pulling out of the plasma market. I know that Hitachi and NEC pulled out of the domestic markets, but wasn't aware of other changes.
Is it just me or: 1) Angelina Ballerina has changed formet i.e. she looks more computer generated rather than cartoony now, which really takes away any romance from it for me, the infrequent viewer; 2) what's with the need for presenters on ABC1 for morning cartoons. Is this what they're funnelling their freed up funds into? Get rid of Junglist from Good Game, the dork from Rollercoaster leaves, the axing of Einstein Factor and Sunday Arts, and now they have something reminiscent of a very poor attempt of Mrs Doubtfire without Robin Williams in drag. It's almost as bad as Mark Mitchell "introducing" Fawlty Towers episode of Ch 7!
Tribal Mind asks: I'm curious about the word "Junglist"? Is this a show which classifies archetypes?
Bereft Skerrick, that's very interesting about Pioneer and Plasmas and Hitachi and NEC but I think you've mistaken me for someone who cares. Common mistake. Maybe d@gp or one of the Zjonns?
Sad to hear about the Dork from Rollercoater though.
So Ten has been taking lessons from Nine. What happened to Supernatural last night? Not that I am against them showing Stargate Universe its just that it wasn't advertised . Last week after Supernatual they showed previews for this week then no show! As I have seen all current eps of SU on Sci-Fi I really don't care about them on Ten but it would have been nice for them to say where SN had gone. Back into the cupboard no doubt. Still I suppose it is great to see a new sci-fi show getting semi decent ratings. And SGU is quite good though much darker than previous Stargates.
can anyone tell me where SUPERNATURAL has gone, do i have to wait till next year? if only 10 had a another digital channel to put it on
i know it's been getting bad numbers but it is the silly season
darren: I just didn't want you to feel left out, but alas thou hath vented at me anyhow. Methinks I'll just pull my head in.
Nice sneaky work by Apple today allowing a download from iTunes of Voyage of The Damned as part of a 12 days of XMAS promotion. But no, Apple, thou shalt not receive my credit card details!
Hooray for 30 Rock! Seven, please keep it at 10.30 or earlier. Meanwhile at the same time, Go! has an absolute shocker called Dante's Cove. Is Dante's Cove supposed to be anything more than gay porn mixed with horror? A gay/lesbian,/straight sex scene every ten minutes whether storyline requires it or not, with hot looking people who were obviously not chosen for their acting abilities. Just like a porn flick. Really bad at acting and story that just makes you laugh out loud at how bad it is.
They've shafted the Dork AND Einstein? Is Aunty going through... you know... that time of life? Then again, Aunty does have a habit of shafting programs when you least expect it (The Glasshouse anyone? talk about a shattering experience).
TM Junglist was the other presenter of 'Good Game' before he became another 'shaftee' (sp?). Ah well, am sure that Mr Scott knows exactly what his staff are doing, all in line with his grand plans.... to errr... you know.
Watched Stargate Universe last night: not too sure what to make of it all, although until Shirl has a 2nd SD channel, it will either linger on or just vanish into the ether. Must admit it was nice to see my Fav Scot's actor in a leading role. And speaking of Scot's, did anyone else watch the 'History of Scotland' and find it rather annoying that at times the music drowned out what was being said, or is it just a further sign that my ears is following my hairline?
Bereft, the "good old days" of wrestling (for me, at least), goes back to the old tin shed at Rushcutters Bay.
Friday nights with Killer Kowalski (he died this year), Skull Murphy, Brute Bernard, Ray Stevens, Tex McKenzie (he passed away this year, too), Dory Funk Jr (still going strong), Mark Lewin, plus the terrifying Mongolian Stomper (evil personified!!).
Then we'd tune into 9 at noon Saturday and again Sunday (following Nock & Kirby's Handy Andy and Joe the Gadget Man of course) and see them unleash the angles for the next bloodletting.
My mother tells me she went out on a date with Chief Billy Little Wolf (before dad came along) - maybe THAT's where the interest festered.
Re Hulk Hogan's recent tour... someone told me that his opponent, Ric Flair, had to help Hulk up onto the second rope in order for him to administer a savage beating on Nature Boy.
The things they do just to entertain us...
The only wrestler I can remember is Haystacks Calhoun - I've probably just outed myself as officially over the hill.
Channel surfed last night and unfortunately managed to catch Sophie Monk on 7.30 Project. God, like, could that, like, woman act like, anymore, like dumb? I think she's overdosed on Kylie Mole. And being followed by Libby Trickett didn't help either.
I gave up Lillies on aunty to watch SGU. I hate it when shows keeping flicking back and forward between the past and present - it just takes so much effort to keep up. As for the show, I was waiting for an alien or two to start killing them off one by one...
Courtesy of my friend, MrsDrWho, I have seen all the episodes of SGU on Austar. It is dark and they play loose and wild with people's lives, but I like it. The end of the year episode (or whatever it is called) had a pretty fabulous cliff-hanger ending.
Here in Tasmania I don;t think we saw the start of SN, it was pre-digital stations, so I never started watching it and once I miss the beginning I usually can't catch up.
Anyone see The Fixer on SBS at 10pm last night?? Made by the Kudos people: Spooks and LOM.
Ah the Enter Finger is quicker than the mind: I also meant to say that I read Elliot, AKA The Dork from Rollercoaster, was leaving to pursue other performing avenues.
Ahh, how I long for the days of Monday Munchies with James Valentine. I would rush home from staff meeting to watch!!
Hurrah for 30 Rock. Absolutely loving it the second time round. With these improved ratings hopefully it maintains a decent timeslot next year.
em: being the wife of a Stargate junkie (one who is putting an aerial connection in oiur new house so he can watch & fix stuff simultaneously), I can confirm that at the end of Supernatural down here (South Coast) last week there was an ad for 2 hours of Stargate:Universe next (this) week. I don't know what they would have done for you in Sydney.
d@gp: Nock & Kirbys, Joe the Gadget Man. Wow. Throw in a bit of Julius Sumner Miller and we're really on a history trip. Think I'll take a Bex and lie down.
Sorry, Bereft Skerrick. I think you think that I thought I should vent at you when really I was just thinking you thought I was thinking about getting a new tellie.
Getting a new tellie would perhaps be a good idea if it came with new television programmes but as it doesn't I'll stay with my 10 year old Panasonic 'til it carks it and then get something flat and thin and integrated. In the meantime, I'll just watch other people chat about all that technocologically stuff.
Don't pull your head in on my account.
Re Elliot The Dork From Rollercoater, I think the ABC is replacing all its Youth Entertainment hosts with Youths. Anyone who doesn't have weird hair and tight jeans and superwhite teeth and underdeveloped brains is out. Britney Clones and Justin Timberlakelookalikes are in. Even Juanita has been replaced with Jeremy Fernandez on the news. He's barely got his adult teeth.
Bereft, OMG! I remember Joe the Gadget man. I remember my mum watching. And Julius Sumner Miller "Why is it so"? Now I am really showing my age! I am so old!
And as for Stargate, I love it too. SGU is very dark and the final ep had the best cliffhanger. Also on another sci-fi front, saw last night Nine advertising "V" coming in 2010. How disappointing that Nine has the series. We all know that it is doomed before it is even shown. I just hope Foxtel picks it up as well. I don't think I can be bothered watching on Nine knowing it won't rate well enough for them to keep it on. And I am totally sick of chasing programs around the schedule.
To Jac and em who asked what happened to Supernatural - Shirl decided to double Stargate Universe this week - but I believe Supernatural returns next week (21 December in Sydney). If there are any Law and Order fans don't go looking for it on friday - Shirl has decided after 2 eps to whip it off (they are copying Nein)!
Thanks to Seven for showing all of the current Amazing Race - I was happy with who won.
Off to Where the Wild things are tonight... and will be seeing Avatar in 3D on Saturday
I always thought 30 Rock deserved an earlier slot of 10.30 and having been saying so for the last two years. Seven weren't listening. It might become the new Boston Legal on Monday nights if it stays at 10.30pm.
Love when I'm on holidays, I can finally view 30 Rock etc - v. funny last night. Watched Parks and Recreation - I was a bit meh. I get what they were trying to do, but it seemed like a very unfunny version of The Office. Maybe I'm just missing the joke, but I'm not seeing what the fuss was about.
SO happy with the Golden Globe nominations - Glee leading the way with four, incl. noms for Lea Michele (Rachel), Jane Lynch (Sue) and Matthew Morrison (Will), as well as comedy/musical series. And a nod for Toni Collette too, would love to see her or Lea beat Tina Fey, who, while funny, is essentially just being herself, not much of an acting stretch. And noms for Big Love and True Blood too. Excellent. Looking forward to seeing it in January.
World Championship Wrestling & Saturday lunches of hot dogs, now that was when the world was a good place. Add in the "good guy" Mario Milarno, also the Aussie tag-team duo (who usually ended on the floor outside the ring.....Larry O'Day & Ron "somethingerother". Next Clarence the Clocker will get a run.
Tribal Mind observes: That was a time when we watched Skippy instead of eating him -- though who knows what was in those hot dogs?
darren: I'm a repair industry dork. And I also think that Juanita may be on XMAS holidays. Tis the season for substitutes, not just in programming.
Have watched some Parks & Rec. It does look like a poor Office copy Office copy.
Did anyone watch 'Backstairs Billy - The Queen Mum's Butler'? I saw it advertised but assumed it was an episode of 'Dante's Cove'.
Cathy, let us know your appraisal of 'Where the Wild Things Are'. I saw it a couple of weeks ago and liked it. I'm going to see 'Avatar' on Saturday too. Us and about 3 million other people.
Have recorded 30 Rock, but from what i saw of the promo, the concept (distressed airline passenger spilling deep secrets thinking the plane will crash anyway) is a direct rip-off from a book "Can You Keep A Secret" by Sophie Kinsella. Not so original, but great show anyway.
Yeh Darren, I thought Backstairs Billy was actually a character from Dante's Cove...not that there's anyhing wrong with that.
darren - sort of watched Backstairs Billy while doing the Monday's SMH crossword & it was just a twist on the usual "royal" story. He ran the Queen Mum's house & was in servce for over 50 years. Had the standard royal moments of sex & alcohol & after the Queen Mum died he was sort of shown the door.......sad in a pitiful way but also he got what he deserved after how he treated his fellow staff members. One of his friends that was interviewed was titled "socialite & friend" named Myfanwy Upstart or something like that whose face couldn't have been any tighter. Honestly it would have twanged if you touched it!!
Then watched The Wire on ABC2, still great swcond time around.
PJ453: Myfanwy Upstart. (and yes I saw a bit of the show I saw who you're talking about, believe her belly button is now her nasal cavity) Gee, if I ever need a new blog username, that's going to the top of my list!
Hey TM, who did you decree the poet/poetess with the most/mostess?
Tribal Mind replies: Andrew Marvell.
Can't believe White Collar is struggling. Incredibly entertaining programme.
TM - can you remind us of Andrew's work as it doesn't spring to mind. Andrew Marvell also looks like a "real" name.
Tribal Mind replies: But always at my heels I hear Time's winged chariot drawing near.
Wondering whether I missed the news, but does anybody know what happened to the Brit crime drama The Take that was on 7 on Wed nights. Turned on last night to find Criminal Minds! It was only a 4 part prog anyway - why did it need boning after just 2 weeks. A BIG steaming cow pat to the gibbon responsible.
TM, don't be coy!!!
PS Thank you for whooshing my last two comments together!!
Andrew Marvell sounds less like a 17th century poet and more like a cartoon superhero. Andrew Marvell versus Jean Gray.
Backstairs Billy and Myfanwy Upstart are porn names surely. Not going to offer a title on that one. See. Restraint.
Just ever so briefly on the wrestling thread... "the Golden Greek", Spiros Arion, was actually a publican in the little backwater town of Toukley on the NSW Central Coast. Big Al told me. Big Al, in keeping with the world of kayfabe, is actually little more than 4'10" in his stocking feet. If ever they were recasting for Snow White, Big Al would be a run in for... well, one of the seven...
Andrew Marvell: wasn't that the pseudonym of Voldemort?
Bereft, He-Who-Can't-Be-Named was Tom. The letters of his name, when rearranged, spelled out 'I am Lord Voldemort'.
I am enduring the tripe that is daytime tv at the moment. One has to ponder just how many drugs Glen from the Morning Show is on. Now wondering if I should have taken Larry Emdur's advice and done my Christmas shopping using the Morning Show - who wouldn't love a ShamWOW or a Mr T. endorsed 'Flavourwave' oven...?
Ms Skerrick, Tom Marvolo Riddle is actually Lord Voldemort's real name. So I think "Voldemort" is the pseudonym.
Going out to the movies tonight. Can't decide between "Where the Wild Things Are" and the new Pedro Almodovar. (Avatar is being saved to be seen with friends. We're all juggling babysitters at the moment.)
TV remains mostly off. I did catch up on the final episode of "Glee" last night (finally!) and we've been recording "30 Rock" when we remember. When I grow up, I want to be Liz Lemon.
Marvell wrote metaphysical poems about mowers in the 17th century. I think the "metaphysical" part has something to do with time travel, since everyone knows Victa invented mowers in the 50s.
It's a bit disconcerting to think that you have been thrashed in a poetry comp by a long dead poet. Sigh. Oh well, back to the drawing board...
Tribal Mind replies: Ah, now I see what the original question meant. I will name two winners of the limerick contest over the weekend. The book which is the prize is not released until January, so I have felt no need to hurry.
Yes I knew that Tom Marvolo Riddle is Lord Voldemort, it was just a case of late night smartarsedness. And you all fell for it *evil maniacal laugh*
I know a guy who juggled babysitters...
Tribal Mind replies: I get the gag, but not its relevance. Are you suggesting a contest for the best one-liners?
Better than 50 words max...
SGU having watched up to the end of the current run. There have been only 2 Episodes that I didn't find myself fast forwarding through (Time and Judgemant) the rest of the season was just 90210 in space. I kept hoping that it will get better when it returns next year.
OMGWTFBBQ!11!11! I'm so humbled. And surprised. I haven't prepared a speech. I'd like to thank all those who made it possible. The little people, like Mother (possibly St) McKillop, The Pope, and our Fearless Leader Kruddy. I don't know what's more exciting, winning a book or the lovely wicket Master 8 took this morning, bowling a good batsman middle stump!
Ijuscantwaitanylonger! TM, what did you think of 'Avatar'? I saw it on Saturday and was prepared to be disappointed but was completely blown away. Fanbloodytastic. I don't regard myself as easily impressed but I was awestruck. Astounded. All those superlatives. Several people I've spoken to today felt the same. I wonder what its box office takings were for the weekend (just read $73 million for 'Avatar' in the U.S. over the opening weekend. Not sure where that fits it with the Biggest Movies of All Time...)? I'm going to go and see it again over the hols. The 3D was awesome as well (although I think being colour-blind, I may be missing something). The 3D glasses were annoying but I didn't care after a few minutes. They've made something wonderful and everyone should go see it. Check out Sam Worthington's legs.
I also bought a new Dictionary at Kinokuniya. A dictionary where 'Aardvark' is not the first word but the 19th!! 2000 pages. Hee hee.
A good day all round.
Tribal Mind replies: I'll reveal Aus box office after 5pm this evening. And next Saturday's column will be all about Avatar and Gilgamesh.
I watched Oprah's show at the White House and loved all the decorations and the trees. I especially loved seeing how Michelle Obama was dressed. Everyone should have watched it! If you missed it and want to see how the White House looks at Christmas, pick up a copy of the book, Christmas at the White House at www.christmasatthewhitehouse.com
Hey ozinoz, I echo your sentiments about The Take. Only two eps, so what the ? about thst Seven? You have two channels now so why not put it in 7TWO and keep it consistent?
Anyway, I have discovered today that the final two eps are showing back to back this Sat at 10.30 so set your IQ, PVR, VCR.
Darren - last week you asked me for my appraisal of Where the Wild Things Are - very nice movie - although I thought Max needed a good thwack up the side of his head! Victorian bush was a great representation of different place - although it reminded me again of how bad the bushfires actually were.
I, like you, saw Avatar in 3d and must say it is the way to see it - a friend who went with us thought it deserves best picture at the Oscars - she loved loved loved it. I thought the effects brilliant and as TM alluded to last week - story is one we have seen before several times before. Not my number 1 movie of the year but an excellent one all the same. Still loved UP more...
Concept and colours were fantastic and think if you are colour blind you may not have got the full impact depending on what colours are problematic for you. Agree with you re Sam's legs - very realistic.
The cinema we go to (Randwick) charges you $1 for the 3d glasses (fresh ones) but recommends you keep them so you can use next time - I keep my friends as well as mine in the car so we have them for next time.
Looking forward to Sherlock Holmes - aiming to see on 27th. Will make the magic 70 movies seen this year by about 28th this year.
TM - Gilgamesh??? What pray tell am I missing - as yes I always read your columns
Tribal Mind replies: Gilgamesh is the first story ever published, but still fresher than Avatar.
My son went to see Avatar on Friday and has not stopped talking about it since. I plan on seeing it over the Christams break and can't wait. I have already heard of people who have gone twice and planning a thrid trip. Sounds a bit like when Titanic was on, I knew people that went to see it again and again. Seems James Cameron has done it again. Do we all see an Oscar in his future?
Tribal Mind suggests: As you watch, ponder the American politics.
darren, you obviously don't suffer from motion sickness. I had 3 hours of nausea, since the fracking camera did not fracking stop fracking moving ONCE the entire fracking movie.
FRACK!
I'm going to see "Broken Embraces" tonight at the Dendy to sooth my peeved soul.
But, yes, it made with the pretty. But the plot was bloody basic, I had it all sussed before the first wave of nausea hit (round about the first action scene). And I too was impressed with Sam Worthington, legs and all.
tqd - on the basis of your motion sickness never see Genova - I don't get motion sickness but did in that movie!
Supernatural back tonight - yay - should be home from my last effort of braving the crazy shoppers in the city for that - heading off now.
Cathy, I thought WTWTA was great too. Made me realise I need to grow up now. Max was a real kid, by my reckoning and made me wonder why we don't tolerate kids being kids anymore. Very interesting movie.
As for 'Avatar', no I don't get motion sickness and my 'problem' colours are red, blue, purple, green, yellow, pink, grey and brown. I see them but...well anyway, it's complicated. I think I need to mount a 'Dichromatism Sufferers Are People Too' campaign outside the cinema and demand equal rights to be dazzled by technology.
But I think I was dazzled enough. Like has been said, the story was basic but adequate. The special effects were what blew me away. And was so relieved there was no 'JarJar Binks' moment. The whole planet and its creatures was perfectly realized and surely they'll get an Oscar for Art Direction or Design or something like that there. I read a really cynical and snarky review yesterday about it being dull and corny and having a Green Agenda which was clumsily pushed but I didn't get that. It was just fun and amazing looking.
One disappointment: that people still smoke in 2154.
Tribal Mind remarks: But not necessarily tobacco. And if Sigourney Weaver does it, then it must be OK
Mr Dale, it was a bit hard to merely "ponder" American politics when it was shoved down our throats. (I actually did groan out loud at one stage, but I was obviously the dissenting voice in the cinema. And it wasn't groaning from nausea, although I was tempted at times.)
But it definitely made with the pretty and was a darned sight less shite than Titanic. And I did like the bad man, he's one of the best men-you-love-to-hate men I've seen in a long time.
"Broken Embraces" was good. Plot! Lots of plot! Not a computer generated pixel in sight! And a steady camera. I was happy.
And home in time to watch "30 Rock". And some doco on comedy, so I've *finally* seen (and heard) Lenny Bruce. And George Carlin's "Seven Words you Can't Say on TV". Brilliant, ground breaking work. Shame the narration and talking heads was a bit well, unfunny, compared to what was happening in the historical footage.
Congrats to the limerick winners .....truly worthy. Although I thought that limericks were only 5 or so lines, I guess darren's magnificent effort was in the mega-limerick style that's not seen much these days, a lost art.
darren: the Masters Skerrick are begging for a dog when we move next year. If it's smart it'll be named Yoda. If it's black it'll be named Darth Vader. If it's dumb they want to name it Jar Jar Binks. If it moons over the neighbours dog and it's a giant sook we'll name it Anakin.
BTW when you mentioned 2154 I didn't think Teh Future, I thought Castle Hill.
Anyhow since no-one else has done so yet (that I've noticed), let me wish all of the disciples of TM, and especially TM himself, whatever you wish from this time of year, be it a Merry Christmas or XMAS, but most importantly for the Family Skerrick our one week off for the year where we'll be heading up to the fun parks on the Gold Coast, which means I won't be home to d/l either of the Doctor Who episodes :(
tqd the other bonus about Avatar is Celine is not warbling/ shrieking on the soundtrack - which certainly makes it a huge cut above Titanic
tqd, your motion sickness for Avatar makes me wonder how I will go. I get dreadfully seasick so tend to stay away from boats. I wonder if I need to take an anti seasick pill before I go to see Avatar? I know there is a non 3D version but I really want to see it the way it was meant to be seen. I think I will take my chances and go and hope I don't feel ill. Maybe I'll refrain from the choc tops or popcorn for this particualr movie.
Watched Elders with Denton last night. Thought that Richard Dawkins was not a happy camper throughout most of the interview. He really didn't want to talk about himself and seemed to storm off as soon as the interview was over. I don't think Andrew won a friend with that one. Not one of Dentons best I must say. Dawkins is obviously a difficult person to interview.
PJ453, Mega Limericks have been out of fashion for approximately the same amount of time as Smart Arsery has been out of fashion. Next year I will reform and only offer serious unsarcastic musings on the meaning of life and death and the perils of Climate Change and the failure to act thereon, periodically punctuated with exclamations pertaining to the size of various televised chests and their respective quality.
Tqd, I've been trying to see something of Lenny Bruce ever since Don DeLillo's amazing rendition of him in 'Underworld'. Can't seem to find anything on DVD. He was well before my time.
Amazing result for 30 Rock. It's only taken Seven some 4 years to realize the comedy gold they've been sitting on. This is like deja vu from last summer when Scrubs found a mass following, which led to the successful move to prime time.
30 Rock for prime time in 2010!!!
em you are right about Richard Dawkins - he certainly did not seem comfortable or chatty and wanted to avoid any introspective questions.
Darren please don't reform - part of your charm is smartarsery - we need to nearly spit out our tea/coffee on the keyboards occasionally at work and you allow that to happen.
Can I say that Supernatural was entertaining last night - and kudos to Paris Hilton for - 1 playing a vain demon, 2 delivering lines about how shallow people are who idolise celebrity and spray tans and 3 having her head chopped off!
This blog is altogether too cheerful in this Dickensian time of Scratchit and Snooze.
Time to woggle me moulies and empty me gander bag.
Hello ABC 3,
Goodbye to HD
7two litle too late.
GO! has gone for "TV Antiques" Roadshow.
One's just not winning.
ABC for Kids is at last on the air
Our kids have more choices, than I have grey hair.
Children get square eyes, well out of the sun,
Instead of outdoors, having some fun.
Empty time slots will not stay that way
Uni of the air, is not far away,
For a lot of the people, HD is now dead,
Downloading and I-view, is surely ahead.
Has our TV fare been over-fryed this year ? Psychiatrist, taxidriver, lawyer, quiz master and a couple of docos. And an excellent reading of Harry Potter on CD.
Just in time for Yulemas, Green Acres with Eddie Albert (1906-2005) and Eva Gabor (1919-1995) has been added to GO!'s schedule. I was tempted to say resurrected, maybe not.
Copenhagen Saga.
Dig it up and flog-it as fast as you can
Before our future is hit with a ban.
Clean coal is the way
Some shout with dismay
As nations go Nuclear
Our path is so clear
Don't worry about the hovels
Just buy some more shovels.

em, sit up the back of the theatre, that makes the motion sickness much more controllable. It's when your entire field of vision is taken up with the screen and it's swooping up and down and over and under etc, that I get affected. I find Lars von Trier movies especially difficult (he jump cuts all the time), but have learnt to sit in the back row and I'm fine. I wouldn't have thought about it at all for a Hollywood movie, but this one was all too much for me.
Whoever mentioned Randwick Ritz (I'm too lazy to scroll up) - YES! Best theatre in Sydney. Cheap, friendly, nice restaurants nearby. I, sadly, was at Hoyts Broadway. Soulless place.
darren, very little footage of Lenny Bruce seems to be around. I think audio might be the way to go. I didn't find him as funny as some of the other comedians (Richard Pryor cracked me up several times), but I applaud his ground breaking work. The doco (on ABC1, Monday nights, 9:30 I think it was - at any rate, it was a filler while we waited for "30 Rock") is a series, and this is the first episode we caught and it was focussing on the comedians who challenged the obscenity laws and pushed the boundaries.
em - certainly agree about Richard Dawkins, it was quite a disappointment, Andrew hit a wall on a number of questions, plus having the answer to "what is wisdom?" with a "look it up in the dictionary" I'm surprised he even kept going & didn't put what he had in the bin.
Bereft/darren - the comedy show on ABC has been more informative than just straight out funny. Last night's was predominately about "freedom of speech". The Lennie Bruce & George Carlin parts were very interesting, but I think that "the thought police" would have destroyed most of their work by now.
Brilliant ratings for a 30 Rock repeat. 30 Rock is definitely the new Boston Legal. Seven should try 30 Rock following Cougar Town in prime time. Those comedies seem suited to each other.
Tribal Mind replies: Except that Fey is so much more of a cougar than Cox -- or would be, if I was younger than her.
Which makes me reflect on the meaning of the term - does "cougar" simply mean a woman over 35 who is hot, or does it mean a woman over 35 who is hot and who hits on younger men?
Oh I am so chuffed to have won a book with my limerick: which I have been reciting to everyone whether they want to hear it or not!! Thanks TM. If I wasn't suffering from a little pre-Christmas ennui, I'd have written a sparkling acceptance!! Tony's good for something then.
Not quite sure how to do a not-for-publication comment. Sad Ludditery strikes again.
Woo hoo! Our complaints here has (not likely) paid off! 7Two is coming to Prime tomorrow! Not that there's been any great fanfare about it, I had to go google, then confirm on the Prime website. New channel by stealth?
BTW not quite Colin Firth, but who let Hugh Grant into the country without telling me!
TM, 'cougar' is just a euphemism for 'desperate'. I'm pretty sure it's any woman over 35 who preys on younger men. False nails, hair extensions and dressing like a crack-addled prostitute seem to be characteristic. I can't even stand to watch the promos for 'CougarTown'. Courtney Cox was barely tolerable in 'Friends' and without the othe five has nothin goin for her. In my opinion.
Tqd, have you experienced at Broadway Hoyts, this: When buying a ticket (at the candy bar!!!), the cashier repeats everything you say and offers a commentary on the cash you hand over (ie: "You've given me $20 for a ticket to 'Where the Wild Things Are' and I am handing you $2.50 in change. Would you like any popcorn with that? You are reaching for my neck with hands like claws...."). I've noticed it a couple of times and I wonder if 'The Biggest Loser' and 'MasterChef' have had something to do with it? Very strange. I just stand there with my cash looking around to see if anyone else thinks we've entered some sort of parallel reality but no.
In case I don't get another chance, Happy Xmas TM and everyone else who is that way inclined. Happy Festivus to the rest of us. And a drunken New Year (the best kind). It's been fun.
I think a Cougar originally was supposed to be a woman over 40, but these days the term has been extended to any older woman who pursues sexual relationships with younger men. So I suppose the term could be applied to a woman over 30 if she was pursuing 18 year olds. Does 'Cougar' replace 'Cradle Snatcher' or do we keep that for wide age gaps?
Before I get entirely bogged down in the silly season I just wanted to wish all here and TM of course, a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year filled with lots of fine viewing pleasure. May all the Networks show only quality programs. May they start and finish on time. And may they show a whole series from start to finish on the same day and time and always consider their viewers happiness.
Well, I can dream can't I?
Merry Xmas, everyone!
TM methinks a cougar is not restricted to age 35 and over but does involve a younger man.
tqd twas I who mentioned the Randwick Ritz - and even though I live on the other side of the harbour, in fact fairly near the Cremorne Orpheum I will travel to the Ritz for movies.
And now as I am filled with the joy of the last day of work for this year - at least for this little black duck (whoo hoo!) may I wish you TM and all fellow TMers a very happy festive season.
Mr Skerrick is 3 years younger than me, so I'm a cradle snatcher. But since he's not a recent acquisition (13 years next March) I'm certainly no Cougar.
Merrick and Rosso organised a Cougar Cruise earlier in the year for women over 35 and men under 25 earlier in the year, after a fitness instructor rang in and said she only goes for the younger men because they were the only ones that could keep up with her Cougar appetite.
hahahahaha.....an obscure, little known, way down the list of importance, royal of 60 years ago, almost doubles (playing with figures the way PayTV does!!) the viewers of Ms Minogue.
TM & contributors thanks for a great year, enjoy the festive season & hopfully see you all back here next year.
And remember, as an old police sergeant from New York used to say....Be Careful Out There.
PJ453: Hill Street Blues? Sergeant Esterhaus? Gee I used to hate the girlfriend of the head police dude Furillo. But my favourite was Belker. Gee I'm showing my age.
Merry Christmas, Happy Hannakuh, sombre and respectful kwanza and happy festivus to all of the TMers. Thanks for making my work days tolerable - believe me, talking crap about reality tv sometimes helps when year 9 just won't calm down!!
tqd, I can relate to your motion sickness. Had to take a year 7 group to IMax for a History excursion - all about ancient Egypt and the pyramids etc. Instead of being able to actively watch the kiddies and take notes on the film for later, I found myself doubled over, praying for daylight, it made me so queasy. Rather similar to the effect I gained after watching about 20 minutes of Ms Minogue last night while waiting for 30 Rock. Am loving the fact that I can stay up and watch decent tv programs. However, still finding Parks and Recreation "meh". (discovered the origination of that word, or what I assume is the origination of that word, watching a binge set of The SImpsons the other day - Bart and Lisa say it, and spell it. Mr Beckala and I have been saying that word for years, and forgot where it came from).
My bloke is five years younger and I have often been called a Cradle Snatcher but now that I've turned 40, I guess that makes me a Cougar. How come there isn't a term for a bloke who dates much younger women? My father is 12 years older than my mother and that never seemed to raise any eyebrows, even back then.
Note to Beckala (politely): Hanukkah finished last week, and no, am not Jewish, just have a wide selection of friends and acquaintances *grin*.
To all readers and contributors, and TM (aka DD) A MERRY CHRISTMAS and a happy and safe New Year and may the programmers at certain stations go down with.... nope that is TOO cruel, although deserving.
I know I am getting old when even with the remote close at hand will be on Shirl most of the evening, from 6.00PM until 10.00PM, although am tempted to role over to 'The Legends of Santa' on SBS1 at 8.30PM. (Yes, I like 'cartoons'. Via comics I read 'Moby Dick' as a young 'un).
Tribal Mind observes: I once passed an English exam having read only the Classic Comic of Silas Marner.
Isn't an older bloke with a younger chick, called a 'Sugar Daddy?' If they marry then she is either a 'Trophy Wife' or 'Gold Digger'. Meanwhile a younger bloke with a Cougar is known as a 'Toy Boy'. Seems like the blokes always get the better end of the stick with the nicknames.
Well done Bereft & not showing your age just remembering the good things from tv past.
Why aren't Cougars called Mountain Lions??? The only thing I remember about Cougar is the advert where the barmaid had huge busty substances. Ergo if a woman is a Cougar she has big busty substances as well as a much younger boyfriend/lover/husband??
A big fat :P~~~~~~~ to Prime2. Fat lot of good it is that the mini series "Tin Man" is on. There I was foolishly thinking it'd be the first episode. But because the gibbons at Prime2 didn't get their fat posteriors into gear quick enough, tonights isn't the first episode. It was a 6 hour miniseries, and the Yahoo TV guide is exceptionally poor at telling me where tonights episode fits in. Plus it seems they've split 3 x 2hr into 6 x 1hr. Pooey on Prime2.
Bereft Skerrick, the same thing happened here in Tasmania, where 7TWO started four weeks after the actual start date and the promised catch up episodes never appeared. Craig, the man in charge was beastly careless too. Why do I still hope and believe that the TV stations will do the right thing by viewers?? No, Bereft Skerrick, there is no Santa Station.
Apparently, the male version of a Cougar is called a "Rhino" hecause they're ugly and they're horny. I heard Dylan Lewis, Sophie Monk and Dave Thornton talking about this on the breakfast show on Nova this morning. Sophie said she thought they were just known as "Dirty Old Men" or "as I like to call them...Snake". She's a crack up. Somebody give her a regular radio or television gig. Examples for a Rhino given were Rod Stewart, Donald Trump, Geoffrey Edelsten and Charlie Sheen's character on 2.5 Men.
Like Blokey Bloke, I first became aware of the 'cougar' phrase from Merrick and Rosso. Merrick has this awesome way of saying "Cougar" which makes it sound really seedy and filthy. Sigh - I don't think i'll be following Merrick to breakfast on Nova next year, as the big screech otherwise known as Ricki Lee will be a co-host, and I just can't stand her. And Blokey bloke, I believe that Sophie Monk has a reality 'docudrama' in the US - saw pap shot of her filming it. Not sure if it has been released there yet though, or even if it has a distributor. But I could see the potential - I still remember the story she told on Merrick and Rosso when she was a cheerleader at the football and saw her "cousin" on the sidelines and wondered why he wasn't responding enthusiastically to her enquiries about her aunt, until one of the other girls asked her how she knew Fatty Vautin. Still cracks me up when I think about it (admit it probably doesn't look funny here, but it was in the telling...)
Furlozza - it was a bastardised Simpsons quote, thus why the mention of Hanukkah - have friends who are Jewish so I did know it was over, I was just stealing a greeting from Krusty the Clown ;-) then combining it with I think a Seinfeld word...?
Completely off topic for a second, but if you have a cat like I do, I highly recommend the 'Simon's Cat' series on Youtube - this is my favourite, as it accurately depicts my cat, desperately trying to wake me up this morning:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0ffwDYo00Q
Tribal Mind asks: Coud you please clarify the cheerleader joke? Is Fatty Vautin Monk's cousin? Or are we supposed to know that her cousin looks like Fatty Vautin? Is she famous for being sortsighted?
The things you write about when there's nothing to write about.
Not delayed by the Postal shenanigans, Santa TM delivered. Although I had to explain to our postie here at work who this Bereft Skerrick person was! Now off to the dentist.
TM, the joke was that she mistook Fatty Vautin for her cousin. Not that she's short sighted, but just a bimbo. Like I said, it was all in the telling.
And come on TM, there is some quality tv on at the moment to discuss, the Danni Minogue special? The other day the Leyland Brothers was on 7TWO (wow, that show hasn't dated at all!!). And tonight - 40 greatest Pranks.
Beckala, I have to agree with you. I have been a big fan of Merrick and Rosso over the years. With Ricky-Lee Coulter on board next year, I too will be avoiding Nova like the plague. I'm also really disappointed that Nova let Rosso go because their research groups told them that he wasn't popular enough with women, so wouldn't ever help them beat 2Day at Breakfast. I severely doubt that their new team will do the trick and suggest it will actually send their ratings plummeting.
Beckala. I apologise for my unworthiness. Although not recognising the quote could go someway to explaining why I still find some (not all) episodes of repeatedly repeated 'The Simpsons' funny if not hilarious. Ol' Timers is not as bad as they say it is...... for some things.
Well what do you know, its not just my cats. That link exposes a world wide conspiracy by felines to keep their servants awake most nights! Well done Beckala, for exposing this dastardly plot!
By the way, the best christmas shows shown over the last few days were the ABC's Specky Christmas and SBS's Rockwiz special and the best drama as usual The Circuit on SBS, if you haven't seen them, definitely worth catching up on.
Add me to the list of Nova listeners who won't be tuning in for Ricky-Lee Coulter next year. If her inane chatter on Australian Idol is any indication, then her chats on the radio will be excruciating. Won't be long before Nova will be begging for Rosso to make a 'comeback' and replacing the female co-host.
Ah Furlozza, not unworthy - according to my in-laws, I just watch WAY to much Simpsons. With my two brothers-in-law and hubby, our Christmas eve dinner turned into a Simpsons quote-a-thon.
Zjonn, if you do get time, watch the others, the one where the cat attempts to catch the fly is also hilarious. And disturbing the owner's tv viewing because it's hungry. I distinctly remember one night my cat bothering me because it wanted to be fed, and I said, out loud "come and see me when it's 6:00" (which is their dinner time). She came and flopped on the newspaper I was reading, I looked up, and it was exactly 6:01pm. I was being told in no uncertain terms that my behaviour was unacceptable.
Re Cats: Thanks Beckala, I watched all the clips and yes, the bloke is quite clever, as to the food thing, the elder of the two I have earlier in her life decided that, not only should I feed her, she should also contribute and came in to the habit of bringing little morsels which got fresher and fresher as the other, then kitten, also got in to the act.
I let them out at around six each morning for their constitutional and the routine started where I was brought a moth by one, a grasshopper by the other, the stakes got higher where the elder brought me a nice plumb mouse in bed, alive of course, hilarious watching my Buffy with a mouse at her feet, the poor mouse tried the best it could to get away but Buffy was always there, keeping it close and constantly calling at me to take the breakfast of her which she so thoughtfully brought me.
Kitty, the other cat never again took part in the chase of ingratiating herself to me but Buffy, a few days later did something I had never seen before other than in cartoons. At breakfast one day she came in with a rather full looking mouth, jumped up on the kitchen table, opened her mouth and out stepped a tiny finch, totally unhurt though a little stunned, this tiny bird stepped onto my finger, I took it outside as it was perched on my finger, it flew of my finger and away with no harm done. Buffy was happy because she got a cuddle, the bird was happy as it had a second life and I experienced one of the most peculiar and unforgettable moments of my life.
Hey TM, a belated Merry Christmas to you!
I was wondering you could please post the figures for the 7pm Project's last three eps for the year, last Tues/Wed/Thurs? I know I'm in the minority here, but I think this is a great little show and hopefully with a bit more tweaking i will hold a solid audience in 2010. Thanks.
Tribal Mind replies: I cannot give you the three individual results, but I can tell you that the average for the week just ended was thus:
73 THE 7PM PROJECT Ten 583,000 166,000 194,000 105,000 58,000 59,000.
The question is: what should Ten do to persuade viewers to give another try to a show they have already rejected?
Beckala, regarding Simpsons quote-a-thons, there is a Simpsons quote for almost every occasion, we have found. Even our kids say "d'oh!" at the appropriate moments, although Mr TQD tends to get me most often with "you laughed, I'm off the hook!".
Haven't watched much tv, have been busy with the whole Christmas season thang (there, darren, I'm typing it out in full now, just for you). And there hasn't been much on until tonight, with 2 hours of Wipeout (for Mr Bear), 3 hours of Glee (for me) and John Adams (for Mr TQD and me). The PVR is working overtime right now.
darren, I avoid Hoyts Broadway like the plague (only go there when I have No Choice and then generally book online so I can skip the whole Candy Bar torture) so I have not experienced the whole needing-to-strangle-peon-behind-counter moment. For a while there almost every visit ended up with a free ticket, due to some technical failure or other. (See, that's what happens when you skimp on things like projectionists' salaries.)
Have caught up with some movies - I did like "Where the Wild Things Are" (had to scoot all the way over to The Verona in Paddington as it seems to be finished showing in evening sessions everywhere else), and well, "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" at least didn't pretend to be anything more than a silly kids' movie. I even giggled once or twice.
Might make it out to "Bright Star" tonight, but I think I'm more likely to attempt to single-handedly finish the mince pies and do some reading...
I'm sorry I didn't wish everyone a Merry Christmas in advance, but I hope you all did have a lovely day!
TM, do you have the ratings for 'The Middle' on Nine at 8pm please? Sinking like a sci-fi show on Ten or swimming like an umpteenth repeat on Nine?
Tribal Mind replies: More the former than the latter. In the chart now.
Thanks TM. Yeah, quite a drop off for 'The Middle'. It's a terrible title for that show. Even, 'Stuck in the Middle' would have been better. The show doesn't even make me laugh much so it probably shouldn't be classed as a comedy either.
I discovered a great British comedy on 7TWO last night called 'Not Going Out' which was actually hilarious and made me laugh out loud a lot. It features Lee Mack and Tim Vine who some might remember from the skits on The Sketch Show on Ten a few years back. It's actually a sitcom but it's almost like a sketch show sometimes with some of the scenes. Maybe Seven should try this one out on the main channel after a Vicar of Dibley episode. Check it out next Monday at 9pm on 7TWO.
Ah, TM. You dare to ask about Tool Academy. It is possibly the worst show i've ever seen. Basically, a whole heap of American women (including Tiger Woods' alleged mistress, Rachel Uchitel) enter a home with their "tool" boyfriends, in the hopes of them receiving a 'ladettes to lady' style makeover. The men are complete morons, tossers, arrogant pigs. The bit of it that I watched lasst night, involved the men taking a lie detector test, where one woman was relieved because he had only made out with some random woman at a mall, because when he was asked if he cheated on her and said no, it showed he was lying. So he rephrased, and confessed that it was only making out. Phew. To celebrate, the men went out to get 'Tool Academy' tattoos. Why you would want to permanently commemorate the fact that your girlfriend thinks you are such a complete idiiot she entered you in a reality tv show, I will never know. But, as I said, I think it is possibly the worst thing I have EVER seen. And that says a lot - I watched an episode of Aussie Beauty and the Geek (but must admit that this was during my 3 months recovery from surgery, on very strong painkillers.) And I medicated myself last night with quite a few wines to endure Tool Academy. Even then, could only tolerate about 20 minutes before I started watching old episodes of Glee. God love recorders.
BEREFT!!! Good news re: Tin Man - JB Hi Fi have the series on sale, online, for only $10. Ends up about 14 with P&H. I've put the link below in case you wish to purchase, I certainly ordered my copy. Hopefully this will right the wrongs of Prime!!
https://www.jbhifionline.com.au/dvd/dvd-genres/action-adventure/tin-man-2-dvd-collector-s-ed/290109
Hey,Beckala & TM, Tool Academy has to be the worst show on TV ever and not just for the silly season. My son has been watching it on Foxtel. I think I lasted about 10 mins (also being fortified by a rather nice Moscato) before running away to my bedroom to read instead. These guys are just the worst example of Trailer Trash/Bogan/Dickheads known to man. As for their girlfriends, well let's just say they must have zero self esteem and really need a good session with Dr Phil. This show makes me wonder whether humanity has a future at all! What absolute total crap!
And just have to say that I feel sick at the thought of Nine showing Top Gear in 2010. If anyone can take a great show and ruin it , it will be Nine. And will they be showing new eps or just repeating those already shown on SBS and pretending their new? Only time will tell.
Happy New Year , everyone.
Happy New Year, I'll be watching Shaun Micallef @ 10pm tomorrow night. From thr ads, anyone who pretends they're not home when Dave Hughes arrives for a party is on to a good thing.
Beckala (et al): greetings from sitting outside of the Maccas at Southport using their WiFi. Shall give my review of the fun parks when I return. Thanks for the heads up re Tin Man.
em: I also feel the same way. Watched TG on Monday and am indeed bereft at it's departure from SBS.
Can't give an opinion on Tool Acadamy TM & you call it a hit with 92k??..it's only Melb & Bris who are watching in any sort of numbers, you must be giving it the Paytv "spin".
You did ask a week or so ago who was watching Californication. I watched it last week & MrsPJ joined me for the double episode last night. We had watched the 1st series from recordings & very much enjoyed the adult show. From what we've now seen of series 3, it is still very much adult, but now on steriods with a D cup! Basically MrsPJ saying "this is just porn". I'm going to give it the old Playboy magazine defence....."I'm only reading it for the articles", (the writing, the character interaction etc) the sex, nudity & language just comes with the total package. Also Kathleen Turner HAS to be William Shatner with a wig/clothes on!! The body shape, the voice & the walk says to me man in drag. If I'm wrong Ms Turner has really let herself go.
I'm another one pessimistically awaiting Top Gear on Ch9.
Happy New Year everyone!!
Tribal Mind replies: I called TA a hit for GO -- which means it's one of the most watched shows on one of the least watched stations.
PJ453, you aren't the only one thinking Kathleen Turner as a man in drag - I always found it so odd that she agreed to play Chandler's dad in Friends - how the hell do you think they approached her for that? Must also agree with your opinion re: Californication - I used to quite like it for the really satirical and dark comedy, now it really does just seem like pornography - last night's breast count was rivalling Underbelly!!
I was also surprised when I saw the 2000's Kathleen Turner, so I did a quick search and the explaination is "a combination of rheumatoid arthritis medication and excess alcohol consumption greatly altered Turner's looks." It's a little sad as she was a great beauty. I think it is funny she took the role in Friends, like she is saying, well I now look like this but so be it.
For those few 'wrestling' fans who catch this blog... the Hulkamania Oz Tour was going to be screened NYE... unfortunately, (as I heard it from someone who should know), the team at TEN/ONE HD couldn't - I said "couldn't" - edit the footage they had into anything resembling a decent three-hour special. I understand the whole thig has been shelved. Thought the days of bringing out Yankee Has-beens to Oz had gone with Mavis Bramston. Guess not. Happy New Year y'all.
Tribal Mind wonders: So what are they showing instead?
TM asks "What are they showing instead?"
On ONE HD?
Who knows...
Who cares?
Goodbye Noughties! Hello Teenies!
Tribal Mind observes: Not till next year. There are two noughts in 2010.
My Gawd - the Micallef Rave was dreadful!
Very, very sad. Just 2 funny moments - one was the last bit with the old guy remembering how his dad met the Queen.
The other couldn't have been that great as I've forgotten it already.
Sadly lacking - how the SMH Guide could give it a big thumbs up is beyond me.
But at least it beat the Lord of the Rings III.
Yeah, I taped Shaun Micallef's New Year's Eve special but it wasn't very good. I had to fast forward through some of it. When Shaun interviews someone and asks weird or awkward questions it can be really funny but some of his characters in the sketches are very self indulging and they ran a bit too long so the joke wore a bit thin.

Did the Hulkamania 3 hours biffo (wrestling) fest scheduled for last night beteen 8 & 11 on One HD get any viewers? I say "scheduled" because my Hard Drive recorder some unknown reason won't accept the High Definition signal. DRAT!
Tribal Mind replies: I went through the entire ratings chart for ONE, and can find no reference to wrestling or Hulk Hogan. Something called "World's Strongest Man" got 53,000 viewers. Something called "TNA Explosion" got 23,000.
