The Who We Are update: Week 47

This week's forum is now a heritage item - worth studying but no longer current. For the latest on Australian attitudes and media trends, go to blogs.sunherald.com.au/whoweare.

To learn how Australian television tastes have changed since 1999, go to The Tribal Mind.

The ratings race, updated 10 am Sunday
Channel Seven consolidated its victory for the year, averaging 30.0 per cent of the prime time audience last week (a figure that includes the audience for 7TWO). Nine and GO drew 27.4, Ten and ONE 20.1, ABC1&2 17.1 and SBS1&2 5.4. Go below to see what women watched last week.

Pay TV boosted its share of viewing last week, apparently because the free to air stations seem to have declared the silly season two weeks early. This was Pay's account of itself: "The 'Tiger Woods show' topped the week with FOX Sport's coverage of Live: Golf: JBWere Masters drawing 152,000 viewers. In other sport, Rugby League: Four Nations was watched by 88,000 people, Live: Football: A-League Bris v Melb had 73,000 viewers and Live: Cricket: Ford Ranger Cup was seen by 69,000 people. Finally, in the early hours of Sunday morning, 63,000 dedicated fans watched the Socceroos beat Oman in Live: Football: AFC Asian Cup Qualifier Oman v Aust (all on FOX Sports).

"New Zealand's Next Top Model on FOX8 scored a season-to-date best result when it was seen by 127,000 viewers, Midsomer Murders on UKTV was seen by 119,000 people and The Contender Australia on FOX8 was watched by 92,000 people. Law & Order: SVU on TV1 was seen by 85,000 people, Location, Location, Location on Lifestyle was seen by 82,000 people and Dora the Explorer on Nick Jr. was watched by 78,000 people.

"In week 47, subscription TV was the number one choice for TV across Australia, with STV channels representing 22.3% of all metropolitan viewing between 6am and midnight, 22.6% of all regional viewing and 60.6% of all viewing in subscription TV homes."

The ratings race, updated 10 am Wednesday
Nine's last minute attempt to use nostalgic nationalism to claw back an audience does not seem to have worked. For the week so far, the prime time audience shares stand at: SBS2 0.4 per cent; ONE 0.9; ABC2 1.2; 7TWO 2.3; GO 3.1; SBS1 5.0; ABC1 13.0; Ten 19.9; Nine 24.6; Seven 29.8.

COMMENTS

Wow, how on earth is Peter Helliar going to laugh at his own jokes (before telling them) now? I did watch Rove last night because I had suspected it was his last hoorah, it wasn't difficult to see coming.
Read quite an interesting observation somewhere: Rove came in when HHiS went out, and now that HHiS is returning (?) Rove makes his exit.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on November 16, 2009 at 09:20 AM

It's a shame that Rove sprung his departure on audiences like that. He could have had a massive audience for his final episode if it had been promoted that way. Australian Idol did him no favours and Ten certainly should not bring that lame duck back again next year.
Castle at 9.30pm beats Idol and gets close to a million. Bones is absolutely smashing the opposition now and streaking ahead in the ratings as the biggest import. Sunday Night and the factuals are proving to be consistent winners now.
False Witness was not that great on UK TV so I was really surprised that Nine picked it up for prime time. Does this show give them a few more Aussie drama points, even though it was produced by pay tv and shown there first? It really annoys me when they promote these shows as 'Australian Premiere' when it's been on pay tv before.

  • by J Bar on November 16, 2009 at 10:07 AM

If only Rove got an interview with Tiger Woods.

  • by canoli on November 16, 2009 at 11:17 AM

'Rove' WAS 'Hey Hey it's Crapperday' which was a ripoff of American Variety Shows but catering to children and animals. Watch 'The Jay Leno Show' on 7TWO tonight and see how eerily similar it is to HHiS. Is there nothing new in Variety? Rove was always too safe. Time for Ten to reward Shaun Micallef for his slightly constricted work with 'Talkin' 'Bout etc' and give him his own Talk Show / Variety Show with free reign and real promotion and some long term committment to let it gain an audience. If they start now and start first thing next year, Micallef could easily grind HHiS into the ground before they get any (more) ideas. They're due for another one sometime around mid March 2011.
JBar, should that have read "False Witness was not that great on UK TV so I was NOT really surprised that Nine picked it up for prime time"? Nine always picks the wrong one. Wrong movies, wrong series, wrong timing. They're very predictable. If they have a good movie it's on at 12:45am after two crappy ones.

Tribal Mind wonders Free reign or free rein? One is a metaphor about the divine right of kings, the other a horseriding metaphor.

  • by darren on November 16, 2009 at 11:19 AM

I like the concept of Rove (the TV show). And I think Australians also like the concept but it appears Rove himself is the ratings problem although I am not sure why...I like the guy.

  • by Irish on November 16, 2009 at 11:57 AM

Yes, "free rein" would seem more appropriate. Although, considering 'Good Weekend' magazine got away with saying "Sneak Peak" on their front cover on Saturday, maybe "free rain" is also okay?
Still gotta figure out what I meant when I wrote "start now and start first thing next year"......?? Need more caffeine.
Watched the 3rd season of '30 Rock' on the weekend. It's slipped a little but still good. Seven should rerun the entire series at 7:00 weeknights over summer and then maybe someone will watch it next year. Yeah, right.

  • by darren on November 17, 2009 at 05:54 AM

Sorry to see Rove go though I was never really a fan. Mainly because I can't stand Peter Hellier who was not funny. Ever. But Rove was entertaining in the early days. Ten did it no favours by sticking it on Sunday nights especially this year as Idol has dragged it down.
Still it's always a shame when an Aussie show dies. And Rove always seemed like a good guy.

  • by em on November 17, 2009 at 07:45 AM

Does anyone know if Weeds was or wasn't on Go! on Sunday? I recorded the replay on Monday mornings at 3.30am, but I went to the PVR last night to be greeted by an hour of the Flintstones. Did Weeds show in the 10.30pm timeslot?! Does anyone know what's going on!?!
OK, I just did that thing where you ask a question before doing some checking yourself. Channel Go! website has the following message: "This Sunday, catch a movie double from 8.30pm with Matrix Revolutions and Mars Attacks. Don't fret, all you South Park, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Weeds fans; they will all return November 29th."

  • by Wendell on November 17, 2009 at 09:48 AM

Gee, I must be leading a very sheltered life out here in the sticks. Bert and Ernie gay? Yeah, ok, so they share a bedroom but they have single beds and as everyone in TV land that means no sex.

An article in That Other Paper is insinuating that Rove may be aiming for a show in USA. I can see that working...

Methinks you could be dangerous if you drank any more caffeine Darren.

  • by Shoopie on November 17, 2009 at 11:01 AM

I've always thought Bert's the one who's gay and he just hangs around Ernie who's more like a five year old imprisoned in the body of a full-grown man...puppet,...in the vain hope that one day Ernie will stop playing with his Rubber Ducky in the bath and notice Bert's lustful glances. The creators of 'Sesame Street' have kept that URST going for decades now.
Bottle Top Bill's best friend is a horse called Corky, so....that's called something else.
Now, what about Big Ted and Little Ted?

Tribal Mind adds: B1 and B2?

  • by darren on November 17, 2009 at 11:12 AM

I don't know and I don't care about Bert and Ernie being gay or not, I just care that they were re-enacting Don Quixote yesterday morning. Yay for 17th century Spanish literature!
And Bottle Top Bill's best friend (Corky) is a girl. There may be URST happening, but it'd be heterosexual, and I'm sure no one cares about that. (Won't somebody think of the children?)
Are there any lesbian role models for the pre-schoolers? (Apart from PlaySchool reading out the book where someone had Two Mummies.) Maybe Fifi and the Flowertots has some hidden meanings behind the ghastliness.
Went out to the movies last night, to a preview of "The Invention of Lying" - not bad, a few jokes fell flat but the good jokes were good, and there were squillions of famous faces in small roles (including our favourite Tina Fey), and the message was a good one.

  • by tqd on November 17, 2009 at 12:53 PM

I thought that Bert was more of a pigeon fancier than an Ernie fancier. More along the lines of Bottle Top Bill I guess.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on November 17, 2009 at 01:59 PM

Bill & Ben The Flowerpot Men????
You would have to think there's plenty of issues there.

  • by PJ453 on November 17, 2009 at 02:03 PM

How did Good Game go last night? It was the new combination's best episode so far with all but one review (Ratchet & Clank) being quite good.

Tribal Mind replies: In the chart now. I must remark on the paradox: seemingly a lot of people play games, but a lot of people are not prepared to take time off from playing their games to watch a show devoted to them.

  • by arthur on November 17, 2009 at 02:41 PM

Bert and Ernie - No way, no gay...
B1 and B2 - Possbily bi - some of the teddy bears are girls, some boys.

  • by Tim on November 17, 2009 at 02:48 PM

Corky was Mickey Braddock who segued into Mickey Dollenz. Big Bird is the One Who Is Gay... he/she was once operated by a guy called Carol. But of course, Carol was also a damn fine script writer married to Maggie Smith. Sorry to hear about Ed Woodward. Damn fine talent. Damn.

  • by d@gp on November 17, 2009 at 03:53 PM

What about Morecambe and Wise and their famous 'in bed' skits??? Big Bird and Mr Snuffleupagus??
Never really watched Rove as he didn't appear on our screens until we got the Digital TDT (Ten/Seven combination) a few years ago. If I miss the start of something I find it hard to catch up.

Tribal MInd observes: Laurel and Hardy in bed together? Abbott and Costello in bed together? The Three Stooges in bed together? And the little one said - roll over, roll over. Ahh, things were different then.

  • by 2paw on November 17, 2009 at 04:54 PM

The passing of Edward Woodward meant that the Wicker Man got a mention around the press. Which flashes me right back and the nightmares start again!

Tribal Mind remarks: For me, it's visions of Britt Eklund in the room next door.

  • by Wendell on November 17, 2009 at 06:21 PM

  • by Zed with a Zee on November 17, 2009 at 06:47 PM

The question about Bert and Ernie being gay seemed like a no-brainer until I realised you were not talking about Bert Newton and Ernie Sigley ; with the puppets it's a little harder to work out.
As for comedy teams in bed, the Threesome Stooges did it for me, but they did wear suits under their nightshirts.
And I remember Shintaro and Tombei sharing a room at a Japanese inn -- the walls were paper-thin ; their sexuality was not called into question, although Shintaro wore a striking pony-tail and a divinely-coloured silk dressing gown.

  • by Professor Rosseforp on November 17, 2009 at 10:52 PM

B1 and B2 are as fruity as they come (someone had to say it).
I saw a t-shirt once depicting Bert and Ernie... ahem...goin' at it which I'm sure resulted in many awkward parent / child converstaions ("Mummy what is Bert DOING to Ernie?"......"Oh, er, um, they're playing horsie rides......Oh look over there! There's a dog!"......"But why aren't they wearing any....." ...."Who wants an ICECREAM?"....).
In the absence of anything to talk about on tellie (gotta love the non-ratings period), anyone seen 'Synechdoche, New York' (on DVD now) yet and what'd yer think ovit?
Tqd (or anyone), have you finished reading 'A Fraction of The Whole' yet and what'd yer think ovit?
I trust, tqd, that's not Fifi Box you're referring to. 'Sunrise' is the Iran of Morning Television.

  • by darren on November 18, 2009 at 05:59 AM

I always thought Big Bird was quite camp. Bert & Ernie definitely had something going on. Was always a big fan of Ernie but never liked Bert as a child. May be it was the eyebrow?

  • by Nic on November 18, 2009 at 07:51 AM

To those that are watching "True Blood" on Foxtel, that series is just getting better and better. It makes Twillight look like Play School. But then , it is! Also, last night Foxtel showed previews of the new season of Dexter. Looked great. At least I have something to watch over the long, hot , boring TV land that is summer.
As to Bert & Ernine, well, I always thought there was something a little suss about them. All that prancing around and singing about Rubber Duckys..............

  • by em on November 18, 2009 at 07:52 AM

One of the obvious ones is Shaggy and Scooby Doo. Since Freddie, Daphne and Thelma seem to have some weird triangle thing going on, Shaggy and Scooby seem obvious.
Especially now since I caught them on GO!11!11OMGWTF!111 this morning with their nano-technology infused Scooby Snacks.

Not only Dexter, but season 3 of Satisfaction but also the new series Hung, about a guy who is....well... with Thomas Jane

  • by Glory Days on November 18, 2009 at 11:42 AM

Just wondering what Go! and 7two will show over the non-ratings period, will they downgrade their content, or could their ratings exceed their parent channels ?.

  • by sygul on November 18, 2009 at 12:25 PM

The dominant topic, gay characters, what about NCIS Los Angeles' two main male characters, Special Agent G Callen and Special Agent Dominic Vaile, two blokes who merrily skip along and hold hands, totally inseparable throughout each show, the Callen character even knocked back a certainty in last week's show using an excuse often used by gays who haven't come out of the closet (the old "I don't date woman I work with").
I don't know if it is intentional, but that show couldn't be more camp if it tried.

  • by Zjonn on November 18, 2009 at 12:49 PM

Only 11 days until the start of the silly season? I think it's kicked off early at Chez Tribal Mind.
And on TV. Seriously, is there anything really worth watching at the moment?
darren, haven't even started "A Fraction of the Whole". Got persuaded into "Shantaram" first, and at 936 pages, I might be some time.
And "Fifi and the Flowertots" has nothing to do with Fifi Box. Fifi (& Flowertots) are the invention of The Man Who Invented Bob The Builder. He decided that Bob The Builder didn't adequately capture the girl's market, so set out to create a series targetting young girls. So, lots about dresses, dancing, tea parties.
I loathe it with an unholy passion.
I have Serious Issues with men who create TV series (and books I'm sure, but I'm yet to run across them) that target the "girl's" market. They seem to think that just adding in frou frou, roses and giggling that girls will fall for it. Well, NOT IN MY HOUSE, BUSTERS.
To wit: Dorothy the Dinosaur. The above mentioned Fifi. And, the completely unneccessary addition of Daisy (a total girly-girl if ever there was one) to Wow-Wow Wubbzy, which already had a perfectly fine female role model in Widget, a bunny-like creature who wore pink and liked to dance, but was also an inventor and engineer.
It is mightily peeving me off.

  • by tqd on November 18, 2009 at 01:42 PM

tqd: it was probably a man who got rid of Mayor McCheese and Constable Cheeseburger (can't quite remember his name) and gave us that bloody ridiculous Birdie character at McD's. None of the MCD's characters were female (although WTF is Grimace) so some boofhead politically corrected the situation.
Now Ronald McDonald and Hamburglarm there's another couple of characters with an interesting relationship.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on November 18, 2009 at 05:06 PM

sygul, I'm hoping GO! and 7two will have something worth watching during the silly season. ONE HD has some sports that are watchable, like Nascar and Gridiron.

  • by bobmar28 on November 19, 2009 at 05:38 AM

Bereft Skerrick: speaking of Fifi Box, have you closed your eyes and listened to her -- it's Kim from Kath and Kim speaking. How did she ever get a job that involved using her voice in public -- it could strip paint off a wall.
She may be a nice person, but please, use the Christmas break to get some speech improvement going, and work on losing the huskiness or she'll lose her voice altogether.
TQD -- good comments re early media brainwashing of the fairer sex.

  • by Professor Rosseforp on November 19, 2009 at 05:50 AM

Tqd, books that target girls? Not heard of a little thing called 'Twilight (squeeeeel!!!)? Although created by a woman....
Back to gayness, is that a shark fin I see in the water? No, it's just Claire the Cheerleader and Gracie from 'The Nanny' kissing on 'Heroes'. The Fonze is strapping on his skies.
Nonetheless, it could be argued that all stories involving Superheroes are ostensibly about being Gay. You know: Us and Them, Not Fitting In, Having A Secret, Wearing Lycra, Accepting Your Differences, etc etc. Heroes, Superman, Spiderman, Wonderwoman, The X Men, could all be subtitled: Adventures in a Metaphor. And not a very subtle one.

  • by darren on November 19, 2009 at 05:59 AM

I agree, Darren. Spiderman in particular is rather gay. In Spiderman 3 you have Toby McGuire all dressed in leather supposedly being "bad" going to some bar. He looked like he was about to join the Village People.

And a comment on female role models. I don't really think Bella from Twillight is much of a role model for young girls. All that moping around over some dead guy.
Then willing to die so she can be with him forever. I mean really, what a lot of rubbish. Shouldn't the fiction young girls read have better role models? Stronger heroines that can stand up for themselves without fawning over some guy? Some things never change and I thought we were in the 21st century. Sorry, my rant for the week. I am just completely over this whole Twillight thing. Ughh!

How about Tinky Winky from the Teletubbies? He is a pretty purple and he had a lovely handbag...

Speaking of jumping the shark with gayness, Gossip Girl (SPOILER WARNING)has fallen victim to the same disease - apparently parents groups in the US tried to stop an episode going to air because of a threesome - two girls and a boy...SPOILER WARNING Dan, his bestie whose name has slipped my mind (Vanessa?) and the new character played by Hilary Duff.

Now, I am missing tv in all its forms at the moment thanks to my psychotic School Certificate marking schedule (16 hour days for two weeks makes Ms Beckala a little delirious from tiredness!) so I'm hoping someone can answer a question for me. I caught the very end of Safran where he was interviewing the Holocaust skeptic (again, missing the details as I didn't see most of the show, just the last two minutes) - did that guy know before the interview that Safran is Jewish? Wonder if he is besties with Mel Gibson's dad and Mel himself...? Annoyed that I missed that one, sounded interesting. And my poor recording devices are almost at capacity, so I can't record much anymore!!!

tqd, I spend my LIFE having to put up with books aimed at girls - Babysitters Club, Sweet Valley High, Princess Diaries (OH HOW I LOATHE THAT SERIES AND ITS AUTHOR!! Only redeeming feature is that it unleashed Anne Hathaway on the world, I do like her!), as well as Twilight. With the exception of Twilight, all are based around ooh, let's try wearing mascara for the first time, and I wonder if that hottie on the soccer team fancies me and I can't wait to buy a dress for prom! I'm actually glad Twilight discourages that - the main character has no interest in clothing or makeup, which I wish my year 9 girls would follow - every morning I have to bring makeup remover to class to get them looking like schoolchildren rather than 20 year old women trying to pick up at a nightclub! As for mufti days - dear god!! I'm hoping they follow Bella down the route of jeans and t-shirts!!

Just start catching up on tv / dvd box sets and watching the big-budget movies come non-ratings period.

  • by arthur on November 19, 2009 at 09:18 AM

Beckala - I don't think you can put David Irving into the Holocaust "skeptic" camp. He is right down at the back of the bus when it comes to "deneying" as a matter of fact I don't think there is anybody behind him. As for the sketch, it looked just tooooo real to be real, if that makes sense. ie Jew kills Jew hater .....does that make my a "sceptic" or a "deneyer" ??? The show overall was excellent, his Elephant Man sketch was well put together & informative. Watched last weeks Hungry Beast & it is getting better, definitely informative as well as humerous.

Tut tut TM your hero(es) worship is showing - next pic will be Lauren Graham!
Missed most TV offerings last evening as went to see Eric Bana's butt in Time Traveller's wife - not bad, butt very good - my shallow moment.
A good friend went to a double screening of Twilight and new Moon starting at 9.30 pm - she said average age was about 30 but squeals and gasps when barechested actors appeared - sad... very very sad.
I want me a t shirt saying "Bella fell for Edward and Buffy staked Edward"

It was actually more the girly books/shows/etc created by "blokes who have no idea what women/girls want" that peeve me off. Created by women, well, then I just shake my head sadly and think "another one lost to the brainwashing".
A friend of mine is a teacher librarian, and had some parents request that she remove a Mary-Kate and Ashley (is that right? the two terrified-deer-caught-in-headlight twins?) book from the library. She thought she'd better give it the benefit of the doubt and read it first, and I've never seen her so angry before. I think it was "will the boys like us if we wear makeup" theme that made her lose it.
Beckala, I'm with you with the exhaustion. Actually managed an early night last night, but was woken up several times. I'm a complete zombie (braaaaaains). At least I have a four day weekend this weekend. If the kids are nice, they may even let me sleep on the sofa for a while, while they destroy the house. Small price to pay.

Cathy, hush hush. Don't you know this forum is really just an offshoot of FHM. If you don't like the regularly rotated pics of Ms Larter, Ms Graham, Evangeline Lily, the Rafterbabes, the Terminatorchicks, Saint Sonia Kruger and Jennifer Phworkins, maybe you should go find another blog.

Tribal Miond remarks: Just for that, I'm putting vince colosimo up tomorrow.

I was never a Buffy fan but I have totally much respect for the way she dealt with (most) vampires. At least when she was fawning over Angel or Spike they were REAL MEN. BTW there's something a little wrong about a 117 year old vampire fawning over a teenage girl.

Frick. Peter Helliar found its way onto 7PM. Make the bad man stop!

That school library just got the wrong book by Marykateandashleyolsen. They meant to get the intelligent well written one but accidentally got the shallow pointless drivel they took to writing in their later years. You know, after they won the Nobel.
I'm hoping that on Sunday, Australia will watch 'Samson and Delilah' on the ABC and abandon 'Aus Idol' to it's destiny.
It's my early Christmas Wish.
I think we'll awake on Monday with an AusIdol called Stan and a PM called Kev. And life will continue as if nothing happened at all....

As usual, Nine pulled ER off air last night to air some CSI "SPECIAL EVENT". Didn't watch it as I haven't seen any CSI in a couple of years but I was also mightily peeved that ER wasn't on. So will it be on next week? Who knows. I will have to learn to download as I am so very sick of this.
Thanks, Darren for reminding me about "Samson & Delilah" on Sunday. Have really wanted to see that movie.
Hope Idol goes the way of the dinosaurs and becomes extinct. Hope the GF gets the lowest figures ever.
Really didn't watch much TV last night. This heat is getting to me and I fell asleep on the lounge , woke up and staggered off to bed. This morning I am at work but so tired. I hate heat!

What were we watching on Thursday night? In our house it was Defying Gravity on the Hard drive, then CHUCK on fox8. Then Amazing Race on FTV.
Did see some more of Ausssie Geeks and it is still cringe worthy when compared to the American version. The host is so wooden.

  • by ned on November 20, 2009 at 09:36 AM

Cathy there is a T-shirt that was not to long ago available at Borders -"and then Buffy staked Edward. The End."- but i personally don't think that she would've bothered.
Is ER going to be back next thursday and is 111 on foxtel not allowed to show episodes that nine hasn't?

Watering TM is what I was doing (lucky we've got recycled water) but watched Addicted to Money & if that doesn't scare the bejeesus out of goverments nothing will!!
Couldn't agree more darren - C'MON AUSTRALIA watch Samson & Delilah on Sunday night....you know you want to do it. Winning the timeslot would be super.
Also, I see that Queen Nigella is on Sat at 6pm.......mmmmmmm whisked peaks with cherries on top.

  • by PJ453 on November 20, 2009 at 10:48 AM

ned: seems they have metrosexualised young Bernard Curry. As for the geeks, I know geeks. I've met geeks. I'm married to a geek. I'm a geekette. Corin is not a geek. He's a plant.

If anyone from Ch7 is out there, I just want to say thanks for showing Amazing Race, even if the ratings aren't amazing. It is my Friday 'water cooler' conversation with friends, and definitely the highlight of my viewing week. Please dig up some more series for over our summer...

  • by Jill on November 20, 2009 at 03:37 PM

Do we want to take bets on Sunday night's viewing? I'm guessing JUST over a million for the Idol finale - but I'm being optimistic - I watched most of the series - yes, i'm a glutton for punishment!! - but I couldn't give a crap what happens. Only reason I care is that itaffects a friend of mine - he's the stage manager for Bell Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew, and they need to bump out Saturday night and not Sunday. But it's not looking good - their most prominent guest (Jordin Sparks) has cancelled... And nobody seems to care, including Channel Teen, who are yet to confirm a series for next year - I think the writing is one the wall - think back to Big Brother - they signed off with "Big Brother will be back one day" - no sign of it yet (thank god, the thought of fathead idiiot Vile makes me nauseous), so I"m wondering if they'll do the same with AI...
On Thursday night - I was School Certificate marking. Sigh. But I did get Mr Beckala to record Glee for me (and he bought me the soundtrack for me too, god love him - can't have been fun picking that one up from JB HiFi for a blokey bloke!!) - Cathy, a copy of said soundtrack coming your way soon!! (and thanks for Powderfinger - sorry to others for personal message!!)
As I said, I"m SC marking til 9pm each night, so I didn't get to watch any tv this week, but Mr Beckala DID record Hungry Beast for me which I watched tonight - the 're-enactment' of the Australian soldier who fought in Afghanistan was absolutely mind-blowing, incredible, credible (ACA and TT, are you take note?), revolutionary - words can't express how much respect I had for that story. I have a friend whose fiance is serving over there at the moment. I also just showed a group of students Farenheit 9/11, so it was really fitting - i'm hoping to show the Hungry Beast interview to demonstrate the same issues. Love freaking the kids right out - having never seen any of it, and being too young for September 11 (which as a 30 year old, was kind of freaky to realise - I thought of myself as being fairly young during the WTC attacks, and I had a classroom of students who had no real memories of the events or any real knowledge of what had occurred).

Hot weather is psycho - left my marking at 9:30pm, and it was 34 degrees when I got to my car!!

PJ453, thanks for Safran info - will try to track that down online!!
Jill - my husband is giving the same thanks for the Amazing Race.

Early, I know, but I would like to nominate Chris Bath for this year's 'Best Actress in a Guest Role' Logie. That line she's doing at the moment where she goes "I think we're all a bit sad to see [Ian Ross] leave, actually", should go in the one-liner Hall of Fame and she should be up there with Cate Blanchette as one of our finest dramatic actors. I almost believe that she's actually going to miss him and hasn't been waiting for ten years for the guy to get out. And those hilarious reminisences! Hahahaha, the moths! Hee hee. Roscoe, you're a card. And sometimes he smiles!!! Ohhhh, mercy. Good times.
It's like a tribute to a block of wood.
You get the feeling that the Opera House is a bit over the top for the current status of 'Aus Idol'. More appropriate would be a hired marquee in Dicko's backyard. A few sausages on the bbq, a few rounds of 'The Chicken Dance' and then a show of hands decides who wins and everyone wakes up hungover.....

  • by darren on November 21, 2009 at 06:04 AM

What time was Top Gear shown on SBS on Saturday night? It wasn't on my schedule, was it confused on the list with Mythbusters?
I notice that some people still miss Big Brother. I never watched it but there are fans out there and for those who want their fix, be it only on a weekly basis for half an hour, SBS has a show on Monday nights at 10:00 PM called Dead Set, a lovely little show, obviously based on fact, which will have Big Brother fans gagging for more!
If you can't fit it into your watching schedule (because so much good stuff is on at the moment....not) record it for later viewing, the kiddies and you will love it!

Bipolar Express? Not sure that's the correct name.
Since when did James Brayshaw host cricket? Was Eddie McEverywhere unavailable?
