The ratings race, updated 10 am Thursday
The first semifinal for Celebrity MasterChef last night did not gather more viewers than the normal episodes, but at least it boosted the apparent audience for The 7pm Project -- unless that was the work of Bindi Irwin, who was 7PP's final guest. At this point in the week, the prime time audience shares stand thus: Seven&7TWO 31.1 per cent; Nine&GO 26.7; Ten&ONE 20.8; ABC1&2 15.9; SBS1&2 5.4.

The ratings race, updated 10 am Tuesday
The audience for Four Corners last night was 200,000 down on its average. What does this say about public interest in the climate change debate? Do viewers avoid this discussion because it makes them anxious?
Flash Forward has settled on an audience of a million, which should be enough to keep it from being moved to the sci-fi dumping ground called 7TWO -- at least this year. But because it has fallen behind The Mentalist, Nine now wins Mondays, which Seven will not permit next year. So those who do not have digital free to air TV may never find out what actually happens on April 29.
At this point in the week, the prime time audience shares are like this: Seven and 7TWO 30.3 per cent; Nine and GO 27.9; Ten and ONE 18.5; ABC1 and ABC2 16.5; SBS1 and SBS2 6.6.

The Andrew Olle Media Lecture by Julian Morrow was well worth watching & really thought provoking. One of his main themes was the difference between "primary audience & secondary audience". That is, when it comes to viewers being "angered & outraged" on what they've seen or heard within the media. He detailed many occurances of this including the much hyped The Chaser's -Make a Wish sketch. His point was that the people who actually saw the "offending" item ie the "primary audience" was that their view should have more importance than the "secondary audience" who complain usually more loudly, but may have not actually seen the "offending" item in the first instance. He cited how the ABC had withdrawn all clips of the "Make a Wish" sketch from their media outlets BUT people could see it easily on YouTube & many local radio stations, which in turn enflamed the "anger & outrage". I think this "primary & secondary audience" should be further discussed in the "media", even if it's only in forums such as this blog. As part of this industry TM it would be interesting to hear your views???
Interesting stuff, PJ453. I remember a great piece by Jack Marx when he was with the SMH (found it - here http://blogs.smh.com.au/thedailytruth/archives/2006/12/the_charge_of_the_lite_brigade.html) about how taking offence is a matter of choice in a lot of cases. This article by David Marr http://blogs.smh.com.au/thedailytruth/archives/2006/12/the_charge_of_the_lite_brigade.html says much the same thing too.
People do just love a bit of indignant moral outrage, don't they?!
Have just read elsewhere that Tom Hardy (the latest and wettest Heathcliff) is set to play Mad Max in Hollywood's latest "let's flog a dead horse to death as it has been 25 years and our targetted audience wasn't even born then" trick. What is the point? If the movie isn't starring an ageing Mel then I'm not watching it. So there.
I'm a bit reluctant to reveal this but - I was just lunching at a local cafe and found an old trashlie to read (April 07). Anyhoo, there was an article on Kochie and him impending grandfatherhood (yes, he's breeding). I didn't bother to read the story I just looked at the pics ... and what pics they turned out to be!! Kochie young and with a full head of hair!! Dare I say it but he looked hot. I'm tuning in to Sunrise tomorrow morning to see if there are any remnants of that spunky dude left. Now, I'm off for a bit of therapy.
Bereft, g-strings?? Vacuum hoses?? Mind boggling.
Gees, in my excitement I seem to have made a few typos ... umm, blame the keyboard.
Thanks for a short excerpt of the Andrew Olle Media Lecture, PJ453. Completely forgot to watch it, and was most intrigued after reading an excerpt last week when Julian Morrow delivered his speech. Enjoyed Darwin and excellent acting in Umbria last night. Miss Austen Regrets looks promising this week. Thank god for Aunty.
Shoopie, I'm very much afraid and finding it hard to piece together Kochie being young with hair and looking hot!
tqd and other sci-fi nerds! It looks like ABC2 might be starting another season of classic sci-fi on Saturday nights. 28 Nov has Fahrenheit 451 followed by Slaughterhouse 5 - drool!
Thanks for the info , Wendell. Also for sci-fi nerds, remember the old 80s sci-fi show V? Well, there is a new version being done in the US. Not sure if it is on yet but I do know that it has the actress that played Juilet in Lost. Saw some previews on the net the other day and it looked pretty good. I don't know who will show it here, possible sci-fi on Foxtel. But maybe either 9 or 7 will pick it up and show it on their other channel.
And Shoopie, Kochie hot? Even when he was young? I find it very, very hard to believe he was ever young. Let alone hot.
In fact, the mere thought makes me feel slightly ill.
Why begin another paragraph Em when speaking of Alien Reptile Beings invading the Earth and then Kochie? Same thing. As anyone who has had the misfortune to set eyes on 7TWO's happy clappy 'It's Time!!!!' ad will tell you. Like a Pod Convention. Andrew O'Keefe's really gettin down with it.
Shall I tell you what I read about the new 'V'? Or shall I just let all youse SciFi Nerds enjoy some anticipation a little while longer?
Let's just say the trailer looks exciting.
Em,
New "imaging" of V is scheduled for Nein, infact they have copped some flack recently for advertising it, without mentioning it as a "coming soon" or "not coming soon" yet they have advised within the industrythat it will not screen until mid-end March 2010. (the US screening is scheduled to be broken up by the festive season and I think Nine want to be able to screen it in its entirity without a 2 or 3 month hiatus) Not sure how it will go - they do not seem to know when to let things go. It is a good premise, but not for 2 or 3 20 episode seasons. Tell a good, tight story in 10 or 15 episodes and that is it, without all of the melodrama. Look at what happened to programs like Prison Break - it dragged on sooooo long it made no attempt to adhere to its original premise, which ended at the end of the 1st season or Heros or Lost, which have gone the same way. Viewers drift off if the producers only seem to see them as a cash-cow by way of the advertisers, without any reverence to the story being told.
Hey Em, yes the new version of V started in the States last week so it's available for viewing... not that I would recommend doing something so unconscionable as downloading it ;-)
Since you asked TM (and you do realise you're paving the way for an argument of Kangaroo-Cull proportions here don't you?), I avoid the discussion on Climate Change because it bores and frustrates me. And because it's just endless discussion. It's been lumped into the 'Things to Outrage and Frighten the Public' file and gotten way over the top and everyone knows the ETS won't do a thing except make life unlivably expensive and allow polluters to continue polluting. K Rudd's a Big Fat Four-Eyed Floppy-fringed Disappointment. Copenhagen will result in yet more unbinding aspirational targets and we The Public have no say until the next election and even then what're you gonna do? Vote for Turnbull? Hahahaha.
So I'll just keep using canvas bags for my shopping (Because we can invent bionic ears but a biodegradable plastic bag is beyond us), not buy bottled water and try not to watch the bloody news until either they do something real or there's a Climate Catastrophe of sufficient proportion to make them. I think I know which it will be.
Suddenly very depressed.
Oooh, it's been ages since I've seen "Fahrenheit 451"! And ages since I've read the book as well... Thanks for the heads up, Wendell!
There was a spiffing looking show on late on SBS last night (well, 10pm is late for me on a school night), called "Dead Set". Big Brother + zombies. (Braaaaaaains!) I've recorded it, and hopefully will have time to watch it tonight. I also caught a bit of the Doctor Who repeat on ABC2 last night. Ah, love John Simms as The Master. And the last Media Watch for the year, *sob*. Where will I get my current affairs from now?
Just watched last night's ep of FlashForward and finally came to the realisation I can't understand/follow anything about this show.
Does this mean I will be dead come April?
Or am I dead already?
I can't help but agree with your sentiments darren. All bull without substance, that's politics the world over but hey, we are here to rave on about the lighter side of life, talking about which, hey TM who is the effeminate looking bloke whom you depict on the page, what show is he featured in? Queer Eye for the Straight Guy?
I saw an ad for "V" on whatever channel it will be on and wondered if it was a reincarnation of the old show. If I remember correctly it was loosely based on the Holocaust. Who can forget Diana eating the rat...
Nein have been advertising the remake of the 70s Survivors for months now with nothing in sight. The DVD finally went below 10 so I've got fed up waiting and ordered last night.
I don't think anyone should be advertising coming soon further than 6 weeks out at the most.
Okay, so I'll try not to mention the impending End Of The World As We Know It (EOTWAWKI) and just talk about tellie.
So, what I read about 'V' at Salon.com in a review written by the wonderful Heather Havrilesky (her television reviews are excellent), was that the new 'V' is bland and unimaginative, basically. Her last paragraph was: "Isn't there a new way to handle the alien invasion story? Isn't there something a little more subtle and hauntingly evil out there than sneaky reptiles with really good publicists?"
The way she described it, 'V' isn't about fascism anymore, no, it's about teenage 'dudes' exclaiming, when they're taken on board the Mother Ship about how hot the Alien Babes are. And the FBI uncovers the Aliens' plot when they figure out they've been using fake ID's. Sounds like 'CSI Miami' but with retiles in bad prosthetics (although their masks probably have slightly more facial movement than FantaPants' mug).
Console yourselves with the fact that it sounds like a series Nine will fall over itself to get and then regardless of the Kwality move it to 12:30 am every second Friday and then on to GO!!!!!!!
Just get the bloody DVD.
Thanks everyone for the info re V. I am disappointed that Nine have the rights to it though as that probably means I don't get to see it unless I download or the SciFi channel picks it up. Or wait for the DVDs. I have no faith whatsoever that Nine will show it from beginning to end. It won't happen.
And speaking of Alien Reptile Beings , I agree Darren, that the Sunrise Cult could be the beginning of the invasion. All that smiling, laughing happiness is just too good to be true. Always makes me wonder what happy juice their drinking. Anyways, whilst doing some time wasting at work the other day I came across all these clips about Reptile Aliens already having positions of power in the world. In fact, there was one of George Bush Snr. When the film was slowed down you saw his eyes turn into reptile eyes. Very strange. The things you find on YouTube when your bored.
Thanks to GO for showing double episodes of survivor, but I only wish they wouldn't cut the end of the first episode each week where you get to see who voted for who, its important for following the alliances.
Diana was soooooo hot when I was 14. Even if her breath would have been a bit ratty.
The character of Diana has been renamed Anna in the new version.
I, for one, will be amused to see if they copy one of the original storylines and have one of us good 'ol earthlings make it with a Visitor and give birth to twins - one a human baby, with......a lizard tongue. The other a lizard baby who died soon after birth.
The lizard father in the original was none other than Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund.
(Sidenote: Jane Badler, who played Diana in the original, relocated to Oz twenty years ago and now lives in Melbourne doing cabaret shows).
Ahhhhhh V, I have fond memories of the 80's version with Marc Singer, and a pre-Freddie Kruger Robert Englund.
But colour me uninterested in the new and improved noughties version. Disgusted with the lack of originality in Hollywood and the like these days. I heard a discussion (The Movie Show methinks? Not sure) where someone was lamenting the fact that new ideas are sparse, rarely does a successfull movie stand alone instead of becoming a franchise.
Their case in point: The Hangover. Haven't seen it, but apparently it was successful. Apparently they're making a sequel. Why does a hangover need a sequel? Can't we just leave them unhungover?
Another example. Meet the Parents begat Meet The Fockers begat Meet The Little Fockers. Two movies too far. Ogresr go environmental and preachy in Shrek Goes Forth, plus a Toy Story sequel for my 40th birthday.
It's all about varieties of the original, not new originals. Fanta used to be orange, now there's a rainbow of colours. 17 different varieties of Tim Tam. It's lazy marketing, and lazy conceptualization. Too much hard work to establish a new brand. In groceries, in TV and in movies.
Dammit! Get some original ideas will ya!
Watched some of the "new" 7Two last week (SG Atlantis as I have not got around to d/loading). It seems that despite the suggestions in these forums several weeks/months ago Ch 7 didn't listen and are up to their old tricks.
Somehow Ch 7 managed to get the shows running 15 minutes late!! Thankfully I had the PVR recording an extra 10 mins, and happened to note that the show hadn't finished when the recording had so got the next 5 as well.
Shame Ch 7(Two) ...!
Regarding V, also don't forget Michael Ironside, just after Scanners but before Top Gun, Total Recall and (best of all!) Starship Troopers: "I only have one rule. Everyone fights. No one quits. You don't do your job, I'll shoot you myself. You get me?"
I too have fond memories of V. Very little about the show, mind you, except eating rats, curing cancer, red powder, Marc Singer and Diana... I remember Lydia as well, but checking Wikipedia she was only in, "V (1984 TV series)"... My strongest memory was me setting a personal best quickest shower time during an ad-break of "V: The Final Battle". I was 10 or 11 at the time, and the record still stands.
Fanta... There are even problems with the original Orange variety. In the 80's the orange Fanta tasted ORANGE... My childhood died when they changed the taste!
Tribal Mind asks: Never mind that. Does Passiona still exist?
I'm sure Passiona still exists, but Shelleys Lemonade isn't Shelleys anymore. It's Kirks, and it's really Coca Cola in disguise!
I love it when Bereft Skerrick blows a forehead vein. What you need Bereft Skerrick is a good lie down with a packet of TimTa......
Fanta's been on the outs with me a few years but now I won't drink it because of the godawful ad they've got going at the moment. Animated skanks.
Just have to say again how impressive 'HungryBeast' is, still. I'm pretty sure their story on paedophilia last night was the first grown-up talk Australia has ever had on the subject. Didn't defend paedophiles but made you realise perhaps there's a better solution to the issue than pitchforks and torches. Meanwhile Seven was running news stories about a little fire in their own newsroom which felt like show-and-tell at the local kindy and about a labrador who starred in toilet paper ads as a puppy and is now battling cancer. Sigh.
Bit tired of Safran. Very tired of 'Heroes'.
I read that '30 Rock' season 3 was out on DVD yesterday. Just in time for the Non-Ratings Period which seems to have started early for some. I'm looking at you, 'Spicks and Specks' Compilation Show.
I think I've seen Passiona around, but I'll have to look closer at the fridge at the local charcoal chicken shop to confirm. (They're all so brightly coloured...)
And you all remember far more about V than I do! Not sure if I'm excited about the remake. Probably not, I've been disappointed in far too much tv sci-fi of late. (Or if I enjoy the show, I've been disappointed with the network's treatment of it.) Whoo. Hoo.
Although I did SQUEE! with much excitement at an interview with Alan Ball (he of Six Feet Under/True Blood fame) who is currently developing an adaptation of my current-fave-author Charlie Huston's "The Mystic Art of Erasing All Signs of Death" (as yet unread, as it is as yet unavailable in AU according to a quick search of some book sites). But Mr Huston is also on board, writing the script.
I'm excited, and it's not even up to pilot stage. I'm just letting myself in for disappointment, aren't I?
I hate Fanta.
Bereft, Not only does Fanta not even resemble Fanta anymore neither does Arnotts Biscuits. They are smaller and have no taste. Even the Tim Tams are not what they used to be. As for my favorite childhood bickie The Custard Cream, it is a mere shadow of it's former glory. And don't even start me on Drumsticks or Cornettos!
My God... this blog is slowly segueing into a Sandy Stone monologue...

I don't wish to appear stupid and/or uneducated in modern culture but not even mi friend Google could help me here.
Tribal MInd remarks: You must have been using a different google from me. I just put in "sandy stone" and found him in the fourth entry down - as a Wikipedia entry. To speed the process, you might also put in "barry humphries".
Thank you TM... now, if someone could pass the Horlicks...
Tribal Mind adds: And the Iced Vo Vos. Which makes me ask: did they ever make plain Vo Vos?
Tqd you can get the Charlie Huston book from fishpond.com.au for $28.33 (not including delivery) - I have used them recently - got one of the Dresden files books and can recommend the site, very efficient.
As I do not like any soft drink I cannot add to the fanta/passiona discussion but I do agree on the biscuit gripe.
On to TV - see Shirl is bring new eps of Supernatural back for summer as well as some unaired Law & Order and Numb3rs.
Not happy with Nein who have whipped off Without a Trace - again -why is beyond me! Waiting for ER to again drop off the schedule
They still make VoVos. They're called Coffee Creams but contain no coffee or cream. Or maybe they're just deformed Arrowroots.
And by the way what hell is a Vo?
It's a sad day when you find yourself on Wikipedia typing 'VoVo' into the search window. And don't bother. It just comes up with a story about how Kevin 07 said something about Iced VoVos back in the day when people still believed he was different. He's f&%*ing everywhere.
More a Honey Jumbles guy meself.
Now if there was something to watch on TV this wouldna happened.....
If Kevin ("If-I-Only-Had-a-Brain") was serious, he'd legislate to bring back the Choo Choo Bar, Cat's Eyes, Aggies, Chinese Checkers, AWA Radiola and the Hills Hoist (in it's original, authentic form - an oversized, bandy helicopter).
Yes, I've completed my work for the week...
Monty Carlos are my biscuit of choice, still crave for the caramel lollies by Allens -"Coconut Quivers" that we used to buy at the drive- in way back when Adam was a boy. Only drank the original Solo as I thought Fanta & Passiona were purely made for girls. I vaguely remember that my mother used to bottle our own ginger beer, it's probably illegal to that now.
As for the pretty colours on the moving screen....watched the show about The Masons last night & I think I learnt diddly squat more than when I used to quizz my father when he was getting ready to go off to the "lodge". I was forbidden to take a peak in his little black suitcase to see all the regalia. His official title was "Grand Master" but I was much happier using The Flintstones "Grand Poobah" title.
Things you remember.
I had a Passiona just the other day. Still the same. Stupid question Number 1: Is it possible that Ch 9 only bought seven episodes of Two and a Half Men? I've only been watching (on and off) for about six weeks and they're repeating already.
Stupid question number 2: Anybody know why Glee repeated last night? Was there a huge event that the networks decided would take viewers away to do something more interesting? Like go to the shops to drink Passiona?
Tribal Mind replies: 1) Nine as already lost th year, so they don't care about annoying he audience now. 2) The big event was the US baseball, which pre-empted Glee for three weeks. Ten is not allowed to show eps here ahead of the US showings. Next ep will have the kids singing from Wicked.
Was rather annoyed at Ten repeating Glee last night. Why bother showing it at all if all they have is repeats? Very annoying.
Also watched "Addicted to Money" on ABC which was quite informative. Amazing that a lot of the cause of the GFC was Iceland.
Who knew?
And all this food talk really shows just how bored we all are with this week's TV offerings. I doubt it will get any better over the coming weeks. As for th Iced Vovo, I never really like them much. All that coconut gets stuck in my teeth!
Choo Choo bars...now there's a man's lolly. I remember buying Choo Choo bars after school swimming lessons and fifty cents worth of mixed lollies and those Fags and Cigars before they called them Fads and whatever they call cigars without the red tip. Cigars were a bit upmarket for us. Big lollies. But everyone could afford a Fag.
RedSkins.
Kev could really go to town on bringing back the old goodies. I'd vote him back in for a bag of Red Frogs. Something really must be done about this. Think I'll phone Alan Jones.
WizzFizz. In a PAPER bag. None of this foil crap the kids have today.
And I'm sure Iced VoVos used to be much bigger. The ones they're making now can just about be inhaled.
Did I tell you about when we used to wear an onion on our belts?
Darren, I think we might be twins who were separated at birth. What about N-boy licorice (changed to Bigger Boy). And White Knights? Cobbers? I know 50 different ways to lose your teeth through childhood memories.
Not a huge lolly person (I was brought up on Another Continent where we used the word "candy" and got dressed up on Halloween... those were the days), but I do remember "smoking" chocolate cigarettes here and seeing how many adults you could fool and get tut-tutting about Kids These Days. (Won't somebody think about the children?)
Glee was a repeat, but it was still all new to me. (Took a minute to work out what was what, however.)
And Cathy, thanks for the info on fishpond.com.au. I avoid online shopping as much as possible, because otherwise the credit card would be toast, and I'd be living on toast. Plus, bookshops are wonderful things to go browsing in. (Having said that, http://www.booko.com.au gives you a wonderful price comparison on books across a number of websites - and it includes postage.)
But I've made the incredibly tough decision to buy No More Books until the new year. Time to read some of the tomes I've already bought. (First up: Shantaram.) Charlie Huston can wait until January. It's only 49 days away. (*sob*)
Yeah, White Knights. Forgot that one. There was a caramel one too. Can't remember. All those lollies seem inextricably linked with school swimming lessons for me. Chlorine. Sunburn. Hot concrete. Beach towels rolled into turbans.
Back in the day.
Back when there was television to discuss....
Let me get my face out of the packet of Sherbet (you know, that last bit that the plastic spoon could not quite reach, so you'd tip it upside down over your face and wear it), long enough to add to this blog.
Wait a minute......this packet does not have a spoon.......
I'll wash it down by sucking on a Sunny Boy....
Look at the monster I've created :) (And darren: I miss there being hot popcorn at the swimming pool - Popsy I think it was).
And oh look! Look at all of the first run movies that are coming this weekend on TV, including Night @ The Museum (not bad) tonight, and Material Girls (awful).
Yep! Definitely Sandy Stone material. Barry would love this blog...
Re lollies, Rolo was one of my favourites. I saw some at the service station the other day when paying for the petrol.
Last night's viewing wasn't too bad (not that I got to see a lot of it - doing School Certificate marking at the moment so I work from 7am til 9pm - torturous, but worth a HUGE amount of money, so I just have to tolerate my absence from tv and Mr Beckala for the huge payday at the end) with Failure to Launch and Harry Potter 4 - wonder why Potter 4 - couldn't have something to do with a certain actor who plays a Vampire in another teen series being one of the stars...
Apparently next week's Glee will revolve around "wheels" where the teacher makes the kids dance in wheelchairs to feel empathy for the character who is in the wheelchair (sorry that my mind is foggy on details...Lack of sleep). Found it very odd when I watched the Youtube of the kids from Glee "honouring the nation" at the World Series (i.e singing the national anthem) to see him actually standing up! Speaking of the World Series, I was listening to some old 'Get This' podcasts while driving, and Ed Kavalee was talking about his experiences in the US at a baseball game - apparently this 6 year old kid got up to sing the national anthem, and half way through, this guy started going nuts and just shouted "FREEDOM"... Only in America, hey!!
To join the lolly conversation, did anybody ever experience 'warheads'? Extraordinarily sour or spicy lollies - you had to suck through the sour layer then you got to the sweet layer. I'm still not sure to this day why I ate them - it's like I earnt the joy of the sweet layer after suffering for it...
I notice the ultimate boat people film is making yet another showing on 7TWO this (Saturday) afternoon. Nothing much has changed over the years has it?
As PP&M many years ago sang so poignantly "when will they ever learn". Sadly, I doubt they ever will.
What are the ratings for the 'tiger' golf is it worth the hype?
Tribal mind replies: Not too bad for a daytime show. In the chart now.
Late on a Sat night...supposed out eating & drinking at some new fusion eatery I know, but what were we doing??? Deep frying lots of seafood with Hogan's Heroes in the background!!!! Thankyou GO! Isn't it great when you can look at all the free to air stations & you choose a show that you can almost quote word for word......"Goldy locks to mumma bear, come in". So, everything changes but everything is the same.
Beckala.... get to your room & empty out your pockets.... We haven't given you good money to waste on those abomination of lollies!!!!
Zjonn, I'm sure we'd be a lot more welcoming of those boatpeople if they were as good looking as Paul Newman circa 1960. Plus you could be sure he could support himself through acting AND salad dressings...

Had a good ABC night last night. The show on Darwin was interesting and "My House in Umbria" quite entertaining. Ronnie Barker looked so old and frail though he still had that old twinkle in his eye. All in all good performances by everyone and a nice little story perfect for Sunday nights. Thanks, ABC.
Idol is going down fast. It's nearly grand final time and it can't even get close to the million mark. Ten would be silly to do another season next year when they can't generate interest for this year. Doesn't help that the best singers all went early on and those that are left are very ordinary. Idol, like BB before it, is well past it's use by day.
