The ratings race, updated 9am Monday
One day can make all the difference. Until Saturday, Channel Seven was winning the week, but Saturday night's audience boost for Channel Nine (with tiny help from GO) led to these audience shares for the week: Nine and GO 28.1 per cent; Seven 27.9 per cent; Ten and ONE 20.8; ABC1 and ABC2 1.3; SBS and SBSTWO 5.8.

This was Pay TV's account of itself (and it's worth comparing these audience numbers with the numbers for the digital channels in the chart below): "On Tuesday night, 165,000 viewers watched Jarryd Hayne of the Parramatta Eels win the Dally M Player of the Year Award in Live: Rugby League: Dally M Awards. Twenty four hours earlier, 96,000 viewers saw Gary Ablett Jr. of Geelong awarded the AFL players' MVP trophy in AFL: Players Association Awards (both on FOX Sports). Live: NRL Broncos v Raiders was watched by 221,000 people, 111,000 people saw South Africa win the Tri Nations cup by beating New Zealand in Live: Rugby Union: Tri Nations and 82,000 watched Live: Cricket: ODI Eng v Aus 2nd ODI (all on FOX Sports).

"America's Next Top Model on FOX8 was watched by 147,000 people, NCIS on TV1 was seen by 110,000 people, and Project Runway Australia on Arena was viewed by 107,000 people. Hannah Montana on Disney Channel was viewed by 90,000 people, Garden Angels on Lifestyle had its best result year-to-date with 72,000 viewers and Nightmare Nannies premiered on Crime & Investigation with 65,000 viewers.

"In week 37, STV channels represented 21.1% of all metropolitan viewing between 6am and midnight, 20.4% of all regional viewing and 55.3% of all viewing in subscription TV homes. "

With the help of a couple of Aussie comedians in America, the velociraptor took down the Tyrannosaurus Rex last night (metaphor for Ten beating Seven). With Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation gone and Idol going down the toilet, it was the raptor's only good news all week.

Last night GO, ONE and ABC2 all caught 1.4 per cent of the free to air audience. At this point, the prime time audience shares look like this: Seven 28.4 per cent; Nine and GO 27.7; Ten and ONE 20.6; ABC1 and ABC2 17.5; SBS and SBSTWO 5.8.

How the mighty have fallen! Idol can't even crack the million mark. Seems the 6.30 timeslot is not doing them any favours. I wonder if Ten will leave it there for the year or muck around with it trying to get more viewers in. I channel surfed a bit last night and caught a few singers , but really the ones I saw made me not want to tune in again. My Idol viewing is definitely over. I won't even channel surf there again.
Ten will surely dump it after this year. They would be silly not to.
And Seven's DWTS figures are not what they used to be either. Is this the end for that former juggernaut too?

  • by em on September 07, 2009 at 11:11 AM

Was Australian Idol aiming to get about half the audience of Dancing With the Stars? If so, well done. Time to swing that axe Channel Teen.

  • by Bloke from the Sticks on September 07, 2009 at 12:30 PM

Interesting looking at the Stephen Fry - ABC news update - Midsommer Murders progression in ratings. Glad to see I was not the only person that watched those shows instead of watching the ODI from Lords or where ever (made use of SMH updates *grin* when I remembered). Had intended to watch The Queen after MM, but got side tracked (can't recall to where so must have been truly fascinating) and just caught the last bit and then to the cricket. Ah well, as they say in the classics... er ter be er ter be er ter be, that's all folks.

Dear TM , I still do not see the Regional viewer numbers nor the analysis of their viewing habits which i suspect are different to the city viewers .

Tribal MInd replies: Go to OzTAM's site for the regional figures. I'm not confident about their accuracy because a lot of the country is not measured. But for what it's worth, they are not much different from the city figures.

  • by doug on September 07, 2009 at 04:17 PM

Still yawning after subjecting myself to Police Academy II on GO!!11!1!1!OMGWTF!!1! last night. OK I'm a sucker for Michael Winslow and his vocal gymnastics, because it's certainly not Guttenberg's acting!

  • by Bereft Skerrick on September 07, 2009 at 04:17 PM

Channel nine is trying anything to claw back some better ratings for their evening news, now it's elitist north shore accents (darnce, charnce, plarnts). Well that does nothing for me, in fact it is a turn off.

  • by bobmar28 on September 08, 2009 at 05:28 AM

The first episode of ':30 Seconds' on Comedy Channel was quite good. Not full of laugh out loud moments but great satire. They had to establish a lot in the first episode so I'm looking forward to seeing how it develops. I was most impressed by the performances of Kat Stewart, Gyton Gantley and Stephen Curry. Needed to tape it since it clashes with 'City Homicide' and watched it afterwards. 'Better Off Ted' is an interesting American show after it. Also looks promising.

  • by J Bar on September 08, 2009 at 07:43 AM

That's a good rebound for Good Game's ratings. They had more interesting source material this time around, like "Should we put computer gaming on our resume?" (the answer is still generally not).

  • by arthur on September 08, 2009 at 08:42 AM

Hi Sir Mind,
do you have the figures for the final episode of Flight of the Conchords, i reckon the funniest show on TV. And also Triple J TV on ABC2? Appreciated.

Tribal Mind replies: In the chart now, and not good news.

  • by TG on September 08, 2009 at 08:56 AM

TM, did Top Gear's success push Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader into fifth place in that slot or did the ABC suffer a loss too? Did Good News Week on Ten suffer a drop this week too?

Tribal MInd replies: I've put the relevant data into the chart.

  • by J Bar on September 08, 2009 at 09:18 AM

I just wanted to say that I'm enjoying the 7pm Project more and more. I've never been a Home and Away watcher so the 7:00 timeslot has been a very hit and miss time for me, but I'm finding the 7pm Project is filling the gap. I like the range of guests that they have on and they seem to be very good at finding people who have interesting things to say. I know it's light entertainment but that suits me fine at that time of night and I really hope that Channel 10 let them continue for a while yet.

  • by butterfly on September 08, 2009 at 10:58 AM

Interesting theory bobmar28 on Nine going Elitist. I always wondered about their 'Exclusive is a 9 letter word' promo (so is 'fudrucker' by the way). Now I understand. Exclusive as in 'Girl's School' not as in 'hard-earned Journalistic scoop'. And they get to show us they can count into the bargain. Whoever came up with that promo deserves a job at Nine.
Although how does the audition call for 'Red Faces' and FAST-TRACKED!!! new episodes of 'Two and a Half Men' feed into this hypothesis? Get back to me on that.
Oh, and I think 'The Farmer Wants a Wife' has been renamed 'Dairy Farmers Thick and Creamy'. Saw it yesterday. Catchy.
Looking forward to seeing Magda as Bert doing '15 to 1 Ripoffs of Channel Nine Shows that Were Turds to Begin With and Which We Are Now Trying to Polish'. Here's a daring prediction - it'll be shit.
I need to go find something to kick.

  • by darren on September 08, 2009 at 11:19 AM

Thanks Sir Mind,
figures for Triple J TV are suprisingly low. They promote the show to death on triple J radio, through their website and in the J Mag.

  • by TG on September 08, 2009 at 11:39 AM

Darren, I'm with you. What makes Ten think some sort of 20 to 1 clone show is going to make anyone pant with excitement? Is Magda the new Bert? I don't know if that is an insult to Bert or an insult to Magda. I'm not a fan of hers but she is a talented comedian and she is wasted in such a stupid show. And I haven't even seen it yet. And I won't. It sounds like TRASH to me! Is this the best Ten can come up with?

  • by em on September 08, 2009 at 01:50 PM

I enjoyed seeing Rove ask Julia Gillard about her times acting for the Prime Minister and whether she considered introducing any laws to protect 'rangas'. This came the day after the redheaded girl on Rescue Special Ops was described as a hot 'ranga'. Jonah from Summer Heights High has a lot to answer for.

  • by Bloke from the Sticks on September 08, 2009 at 03:21 PM

There is a miniscule amount I now watch on Nein but every time it is on I see the ads for Red Faces and I feel very very afraid.
Will give Magda a chance tonight - and see if it as bad as Darren has predicted - I have a feel the answer will be a yes

  • by Cathy on September 08, 2009 at 03:53 PM

Darren and Cathy, I too have felt trepidation when viewing the channel 9 Red Faces ads. Dear god, they are just trying too hard with their advertising at the moment - the stupid "exclusive is a nine letter word" - idiotic!!
7pm project was quite good tonight - the guest they had on to discuss the British terrorism was great, really articulate and funny. Todd Sampson was great too - love him on Gruen, he brings a good vibe to 7PP too. Glad ten is sticking with it, it just seems to be naturally getting better. Shame the ratings aren't better - I will never understand how people can stand to watch Home and Away!!
Finally - there is a special place in hell reserved for Kyle Sandilands. Concentration camp jokes? New low...

  • by Beckala on September 08, 2009 at 06:30 PM

Can't handle 20 to 1 because I can't handle D list "celebrities" from Channel Nork pontificating their opinions about anything and everything e.g. 20 best fly up a wall races they've ever seen.
But this Spearman Experiment. Yikes. So it's only out of 15, but with added goodness of Ch Shirl nobodies. I cannot and shall not give it a chance.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on September 08, 2009 at 07:19 PM

Oh Darren you were soo right - I managed a bare 5 minutes of The Spearman Experiment before I decided that it was a failed attempt - trite and awful - I am a fan of Magda but this is far beneath her - more Daryl Sommers really. Paint drying or grass growing better choice for the timeslot.
I highly recommend my fellow TMers avoid this one like the plague. If it last for more than a few weeks I despair

  • by Cathy on September 08, 2009 at 10:16 PM

darren, I guess nine news is trying the eletist accents because they think it makes them sound so, superior?
You know what it's called where I live? It sounds like they are up themselves.

  • by bobmar28 on September 09, 2009 at 06:06 AM

I too caught the Spearman Experiment last night and as I feared when I commented last week - total trash. Not much difference to 20-1. Bad bad bad.

  • by Nic on September 09, 2009 at 06:54 AM

Re 'The Spearman Experiment', I lasted til the first ad break. It's exactly the same as '20 to 1'. Same white set. Same funny pleasantly plump host (although Magda still has her own hair). Same rent-a-commentators. Sadly Cathy, I fear this is Ten latching onto Nine's Crapmobile and they will use this garbage to plug every hole in their schedule for the next ten years. You could film twenty episodes a week. Only one 'Star' to pay (besides the talking heads). One cameraman. Cheap and nasty. So nasty. Sigh. And '20 to 1' on Nine at the same time. Very depressing.
What was funny last night was Channel Nine giving Magda a free plug in the news re The Walking Mouth's comments on Concentration Camps etc. Smart.
TM, are you going to be getting a new back page neighbour now that Carlton's back in and Annabel's out? Sad to see her leave SMH but will be good to be seeing more of her on the ABC.

  • by darren on September 09, 2009 at 08:43 AM

Must agree with the other critiques of Spearman. Bad. Magda was very unfunny, which is very unlike her. The majority of the celebrities were F-list (what does Erin McNaught actually DO?!?!). Oh dear, they should have paid Shaun to make a few more episodes!!!

  • by Beckala on September 09, 2009 at 09:49 AM

Following the success of Magda's highly original 15 to 1, sorry, The Spearman Experiment, Ten are planning a new comedy series for next year called 'Two and a Half Women'. Even though they will just recycle the scripts from that other show with the similar title, this one will be original because it's not about Men. Magda Szubanski will be seen in the role previously played by Charlie Sheen, Lara Bingle will be her sister and Nikki Webster as the Half. Because it's on Ten, it will also be heaps funnier. Seriously.

  • by J Bar on September 09, 2009 at 10:09 AM

I am really glad I didn't watch even a second of Spearman. I thought it would be garbage and it sounds like I was right. But those numbers probably mean that Ten think it was a hit. God help us.
Speaking of God, seems Vyle has opened his rather large mouth again and spewed forth on poor Magda. Would someone please get that moron off the air now? It's beyond me how anyone is still tuning in to his radio show. I guess the world is full of morons.

  • by em on September 09, 2009 at 10:48 AM

At least I've heard of Erin MacNaught, there was some other guy in there I've never heard of. Is Dicko allowed to comment on anything that happened in comedy in Australia before he even came here?
What could have set this apart from it's obvious Channel Nine "parent" was they could easily have dropped the commentators and played more of the clips.
Being quite familiar with most of the comedy characters I can actually remember most of the Comedy Company and Fast Forward skits quite memorably yet they chose to show brief snippets and even then not the funniest of those.
Ten's major demographic was only born in the age of the internet, so how are they going to relate to Kylie Mole, Pixie-ann,etc? More of the skits would have bridged this, yet 20 to 1 style we were subjected to "reminiscences" from "celebrities".
My other problem with these lists is there is no "weighting" method used to be fair when comparing a recent comedy character to one from yesteryear.
Naturally, younger voters are not going to be voting for a character that was around before they were. That's what makes these lists so dumb in the first place.
How else would be Russell Coight be in the top five yet Magda's FF characters be 13?
Apparently Australia, we voted for it. Was that in a referendum?
Sorry Ten, but this will give more time to catch up on what I've recorded with my Foxtel IQ.

  • by Glory Days on September 09, 2009 at 12:17 PM

While my mother was a fan, I have never watched Daze of our Lives, nor do I watch Home and away or Neighbours and added to that list now, for much the same reasons, is Rafters. It is a blatant soapie and has lost me much as I will miss the very talented Ms Gibney and Mr Caton. I have also stopped watching SOPs which, while having some very talented actors, has what must be the worlds worst writers and for that reason will probably get a special mention on that new and original show on TEN called The Spearmint Experiment, or something when they chew over the worst cop shows on television sometime in the next week or so (as it probably won't last much longer).
I haven't seen this week's City Homicide yet, probably will later tonight, and I hope that the scripting gets sorted (last week they had the Ryan and Buchanan characters calling a woman maam during the course of an interview. Who in Australia calls anyone maam let alone two cops during the course of an interview? Scumbag, prick, moron and geezer (believe it or not here in WA they have hired ex pommy cops and their literacy standards are even lower than those of the average cop) maybe, but maam, not likely, that is an Americanism which thankfully hasn't caught on here.
The 7:30 Project is improving all the time. Much more entertaining and informative than those 6:30 versions which pretend to be current affairs programmes.

Tribal Mind asks: The 7.30 Project? What time is that on?

Just heard Vyle has been suspended yet again. Can we please get rid of this guy already!

Hey TM, May I ask how The Beast rated last night on ABC2? It's a great little show I've really been enjoying it. Perfect for ABC2.

Tribal Mind replies: You may ask, but since I'm away from my computer and writing this on a blackberry, I can't answer. When I get home and can look up the ratings file, I will put it in the chart, above. Watch this space about 6pm.

  • by Samuel on September 09, 2009 at 02:00 PM

Interesting that Poh Ling Yeow is getting her own TV show on Aunty. That could work. Was just thinkin to meself tother day I was thinkin, Julie (remember her?) would be an interesting replacement for Maggie Beer on 'The Cook and The Chef' when Maggie finishes up. Granted, it'd be more like the 'MasterChef' masterclass episodes than like it is now with Maggie and Simon, but I think that could be interesting. The masterclass episodes were the best bits. Discuss.....
Looking forward to 'Glee' next Thursday at a reasonable time but it prolly won't last at 7:30. I've read some rave reviews about it.
'Mercy' looks like 'Gray's Anatomy' with even more annoying stars if that's possible.
Also 'Flash Forward' looks a little bit good but it could be the next 'Jericho'.
And waiting with baited breath for the next installment of 'Bereft Skerrick versus Jane Hendy in the Skippy Debate' currently raging over in that column. It's the best thing I've seen in a while. I like to watch.

  • by darren on September 10, 2009 at 11:15 AM

For those like Darren who liked the cook & the chef - next week is the final episode - it is a behind the scenes leading up to the final party.
Will have to look in on the Bereft v Jane Hendy debate.

  • by Cathy on September 10, 2009 at 12:58 PM

Spicks and Specks is going great guns. Great finish for The Librarians. Hope they do another series. Tara has really dropped off since debut. Money for Jam got creamed on its second outing. Mmm, jam and cream, yum, but I digress. Wednesday ratings have really dropped off and Law & Order UK looks like a flop now.
Any truth to the rumours that Ten is bringing back Good Morning Australia next year and also bringing Kerri-Ann Kennerley back to host it?

  • by J Bar on September 10, 2009 at 01:07 PM

Oh, darren, I too caught a promo for "Mercy" last night. I muttered direly under my breath: Bloody Grey's has a lot to answer for...

Busy week, not much TV. Have 2 hours of The Wire to catch up on (double episodes! gack!).

  • by tqd on September 10, 2009 at 01:14 PM

darren: nice to know my work is appreciated. Although it is difficult to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person.
Heck I like Skippy (wonder when Channel Nork will drag it out onto GO!!11!1!OMGWTF!11), and I don't like animals being hurt and it seems odd we eat our national animals, but it kinda reminds me of every time a celebrity gets put up by PETA to protest something that goes in ill informed and blindly following one point of view without bothering to see the other side of the argument.
As opposed to here where we're all experts with unlimited knowledge as to how TV channels should be programmed :)
Speaking of ill informed, methinks Vyle hath gone one step too far this time. There was a slight grey area of blame last time, this time clearly though his stupidity should see him sunk.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on September 10, 2009 at 02:58 PM

I didn't think I'd like Tara, but have really enjoyed it. It's one of the few non-news or documentaries that I watch on FTA TV.
Sad to see Nurse Jackie will screen on channel 10 at 10.25pm on Sunday.
The question is to watch it and see how it slips later & later each week until it disappears (like The Office or Harpers Island) or just face facts and each wait for it to hit Foxtel or download.
Looking forward (in a way) to 8.30pm tonight on 2, Pedigree Dogs Exposed. This caused rather a huge furore when shown in Britain. Yet more greedy people willing to harm animals for their own benefit and/or pleasure. A pox on them all!

Tribal Mind asks: Did they eat them too?

  • by Sal on September 10, 2009 at 03:38 PM

I'll have to remember that "it's hard to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person" line, Bereft Skerrick. Noice.
What is it with Animal Rights this week? Mr Dale wrote his column (not sure it was about animal rights but it is now), Sam de Brito and Mia Freedman both wrote articles on vegetarianism and the loonies all came out to play, the debate whether to allow Kyle to continue living or put him to sleep continued, Scooby The Deaf (and apparently really stoopid) Spaniel got lost and found causing everyone at Nine to spontaneously ovulate, and then last night, 'Pedigree Dogs Exposed'. That was a pretty stunning doco. Very sad. I suppose the possibility that Scooby was bred to have his brain poking into his nasal cavity (anything for a shapely nose) may have been a factor in his stoopidity isn't a storyline Nine wanted to pursue. Just went for the "OOoooooooh look at the cute wittle doggy woggy" angle.
For what it's worth Bereft Skerrick and Jane Hendy, I agree with both of you (diplomatic or dull?), but I'm afraid if we're keeping score, Jane has lost because she just referenced The Nazis. Automatic disqualification.

Tribal Mind remarks: If you're not careful, Jane will hop over to this forum as well. Do you really want that? I'm going to move your last paragraph over to the kangaroo discussion in an effort to avoid spread.

  • by darren on September 11, 2009 at 06:00 AM

Now I'm scared.

  • by darren on September 11, 2009 at 08:11 AM

Great to see Hamish and Andy get such big numbers last night. They are proof that you don't need to be rude or offensive to be "funny". But ouch, bad numbers for Gary Unmarried. I'm hoping Glee with hang on to some of the Hamish and Andy numbers - I can't wait for that show!

  • by Beckala on September 11, 2009 at 08:34 AM

Hey Bereft, I've been following your progress too but tempted though I was to leap into the fray I decided to stay clear.
I see both sides of the argument very clearly. I love animals but have lived in the country so know all the problems as well. I also agree with Mia Freedman this week as I dabble in vegetarianism from time to time and I really, really can't fathom the anger that causes in some meat eaters. I have had people practically yell at me when I've said I am staying away from meat for awhile. Yet I've never had a vegetarian yell at me for the opposite view. Very strange. I wonder why meat eaters get so mad/defensive? I couldn't care less what people eat. Mine is a personal choice.
As to TV, I am also looking forward to Glee next week. And Hamish and Andy have shown that you can be on radio as well as TV and be funny without being Vile. Good on them!

Tribal Mind replies: Oh dear, we're getting spillover. I'm happy for ratings buffs to join in the other discussions on this blog, but it may be confusing for readers who are only following one of the threads. Amazingly, there are some readers who don't realise I edit three forums: 1. Who We Are (about Australian identity, this week kangaroo eating); 2. The Tribal Mind (about popular culture, this afternoon about science fiction) 3. The ratings race (which you are currently reading).
Em, I am going to put some of the comment above into the Who We Are forum, so Jane can read it.

  • by em on September 11, 2009 at 09:58 AM

For the Amaazing Race fans (I know there are some) - Seven is showing double episode next week and apparently they will be "fast tracking next season" which starts in the states in a couple of weeks

  • by Cathy on September 11, 2009 at 10:20 AM

Is it just me, or has the bloke from Gary Unmarried's cranium grown in size since he left Ghost Whisperer?
Or is it just that everything on that show looks small compared to Jennifer Love Hewitt's boobies?

  • by Bereft Skerrick on September 11, 2009 at 12:14 PM

Chuck on FOX8 was very good again, a sort of christmas special, the paper cut joke was tops. Shame not many are watching. If it every goes across to FTV and is huge, you read it first here!!!

Tribal Mind adds: And his gorgeous minder is Australian.

  • by ned on September 11, 2009 at 01:06 PM

"The footy takes over" maybe in AFL mad Victoria, here no-one cares. And I see Friday Poo-by League didn't get much viewers here in NSW either, boo-hoo.

  • by davo on September 12, 2009 at 10:39 AM

davo: no-one in NSW much cares for the Melbourne Storm, which are a rich team created by News Ltd to attempt nationwide domination, but without a real supporter base. As for Manly, I have a t-shirt that says "I support 2 teams. St George, and whoever is playing Manly".
Just watch the figures for when there's teams that people actually support. The Friday Night Dragons/Eels game was highly rated, as it will be this Sunday.
79K for the AFL in NSW vs 47K for the NRL in Melbourne (what's the capacity of Etihad Stadium again?) - that's the telling figure.
What is also interesting is more people in Brisbane watched the NRL game than the AFL game, and there was actually a Brisbane team in the AFL!

Tribal Mind observes: Most of those words had no meaning to me, and I thought I understood the English language. It must be the weekend, when readers seem only to comment on esoterica. It's great that such conversations occur in this forum between people who can speak such jargon, but I'd also like to hear your views on Imagination vs Vegetation, which is about a different obsession.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on September 12, 2009 at 12:28 PM

J Bar -- please, no more Librarians. If one figure made me suspicious of the ratings, it is the number of people claimed to watch this show.
My current limited watching is the gorefest which starts with RPA and continues with The Gift. The latter show looks at transplanting human organs, and is a little too specialised for those who enjoy the general "long case" approach of RPA.
I've also had a look at All Saints and it has become even sillier than ever. The finale must surely involve a cardiac arrest with John Howard, who is coming perilously close to doing a one-man Australian version of Two and a half men.
My favourite comedy, City Homicide, is moving nights, and, as The Sandman has so aptly said, "Change creates anxiety".

"Football"? F*** **** ***k

  • by D@GP on September 12, 2009 at 08:33 PM

I'm truly bereft. How dare Ch 7 mess with Anne of Green Gables! They've selectively edited out scenes and ruined the flow of the story! Bastards.
May I nominated Gilbert Blythe as the teen girls version of Mr Darcy.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on September 12, 2009 at 09:10 PM

Am glad to hear that others are enjoying United States of Tara. It is fast becoming my favourite show - it's just so clever, the mystery of why she became the way she is is really becoming intriguing, and there is a LOT of potential, especially with the new element being added.
(I'm trying not to spoil so I apologise if that was a bit vague, plus I'm still on post-surgery painkillers, although not as many. So i'm still a little vague but getting there - grand achievement, I actually managed to finish reading my first novel in a month yesterday! Admittedly not a hugely sophisticated one - I'm not at my usual level yet, but progress! I'm no longer reliant on crap magazines to keep me amused!)
PRAYING that Vile finally receives him comeuppance. My grandfather was a POW in WWII and my husband's grandmother is Polish, forced into work by the Nazis and abused until she fled to Germany while pregnant. So it's quite a sensitive topic for me, to say the least. I hated him enough before this, this is just... words fail me.
Bereft, I bought my stepdad that exact t-shirt one year for his birthday, and he wears it with pride!! I'm definitely looking forward to the Dragons -v- Eels game tomorrow - and SO many people I know will be too. Agree with your analysis of the Storm - the only person I know of who actually supports or watches them is Molly Meldrum, who is their number 1 ticket holder (and I emphasise, know OF, i'm not claiming to be a personal BFF of the man in the hat!!). So you add that, plus the many people who do hate Manly (thus while your t-shirt exists!!) would lead to the low NRL numbers.

  • by Beckala on September 12, 2009 at 09:53 PM

Totally agree with Bereft about Gilbert Blythe, he's definitely the younger girls Mr Darcy in my mind. I have Anne of Green Gables on DVD so didn't watch the Channel 7 version but hearing they chopped and changed a wonderful story I am horrified. A friend sent me a text last night after she'd watched it saying pretty much the same thing. Shame on Channel 7!

  • by ladybug on September 13, 2009 at 10:24 AM

TM, are there any ratings for Rugby League Finals Series QF3? Seems odd that it wouldn't make the list.

5 RUGBY LEAGUE FINAL SERIES QF2 Nine 714,000 401,000 11,000 284,000 11,000 8,000

Tribal Mind asks: When was it on? And what does QF3 mean anyway?

  • by Dave on September 13, 2009 at 11:40 AM

I don't even follow football, and I hate Manly.
Only caught bits of "Anne of Green Gables" so didn't realise it had been chopped. Fabulous story, shame it got hacked up. We got caught up watching "These are The Damned" (aka "The Damned") on ABC2. Fascinating bit of 1960s British dystopia. So I still have two hours of The Wire to catch up on, oh hell.
Beckala, good to hear the fog is lifting. I hope the reliance on trashy mags is over soon. They really do rot the brain.

  • by tqd on September 13, 2009 at 01:18 PM

Tribal Mind asks: When was it on? And what does QF3 mean anyway?
QF3 = Rugby League Finals Series - Qualifying Final 3
Broadcast on Channel 9 last night from 8:30pm involving Bulldogs vs Newcastle. Like I said, seems strange it wouldn't make the list. However that said, the Riverview Fireworks Show rated better than the NRL Qualifying Final 2 involving Gold Coast vs Brisbane.
Massive result for Channel 7, very disappointing for Channel 9 considering there were two local QLD NRL teams playing. Cheers.

Tribal Mind replies: It's a mystery. Perhaps it's a labelling issue at OzTAM. Since you are one of the few people kind enough to post a comment on a weekend, I am going to publish, here, for you alone, every reference to footy that appeared in the Brisbane chart for Saturday. Presumably one of these is the missing QF3 (and what's this Riverfire business, anyway?).
RNK Description STN Brisbane
1 QBE RIVERFIRE Seven 333,000
2 RUGBY LEAGUE FINAL SERIES QF2 Nine 284,000
3 SEVEN NEWS - SAT Seven 268,000
4 RIVERFIRE PRE-SHOW Seven 244,000
19 SPORTS TONIGHT SAT Ten 70,000
20 TEN'S AFL FINALS 2009: 1ST SEMI FINAL COLL V ADEL Ten 64,000
31 RUGBY LEAGUE: (QLD) 2009-PM ABC1 48,000
96 STREET SOCCER ZIMBABWE RPT SBS ONE 10,000

  • by Dave on September 13, 2009 at 01:21 PM

ladybug: apart from the hack job Ch 7 did on Anne of Green Gables, do you think they have the nous to play the next installment next week? Of course not. Consistency? Yeah right.
As poxy as Channel GO!!!!OMGWTF!11!11 is, at least they're being consistent and showing the Police Academy movies in sequence, with No 3 this week.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on September 13, 2009 at 01:23 PM

Professor Rosseforp, City Homicide isn't moving. It will be screened twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays. I think it's because Seven haven't got anything else to screen at the moment and have a full season of City Homicide. It certainly makes me anxious too when they start mucking around with timeslots. They showed repeats on Mondays at the end of last year and saved the new episodes for Sundays at the start of this year. The show hasn't completely recovered from that brief stint on a new night and seems to have lost about a third of its audience. Now they're doubling up the episodes and possibly affect it again.

  • by J Bar on September 13, 2009 at 02:52 PM

Riverview is apparently a fireworks show on the riverbanks of Brisbane. Sorry don't know anymore than that, however, WOW, it rated better for Channel 7 than an NRL Qualifying Final on Channel 9 between the Gold Coast Titans and Brisbane Broncos in Brisbane.
I think you're right that Channel 9 has labelled the NRL finals as RUGBY LEAGUE FINAL SERIES QF2 mistakenly even though it doesn't make sense and doesn't tell the real picture of how many viewers watched the Qualifying Finals 2 & 3 broadcast live in Sydney and Brisbane from 6:30pm. Strange logic. Anything different in the Sydney chart?

  • by Dave on September 13, 2009 at 05:19 PM

TM, the more I think about it, the more I wonder why Channel 9 would label 2 different NRL Finals games as one? Does that make sense?

  • by Dave on September 13, 2009 at 05:22 PM

Hi TM,
Sorry it's a bit late, but may I ask how Gossip Girl rated on Thursday night on Go!? It was the first brand new-to-FTA episode. I wonder whether Go!'s shows will pick up a little as each series that began on Nine starts to air new episodes.

Tribal Mind replies: It was so far down the chart I did not even notice it. Thanks for reminding me. Here it is from Thursday's chart:
148 GOSSIP GIRL GO! 45,000 3,000 18,000 13,000 8,000 3,000

  • by Ryan on September 13, 2009 at 07:20 PM

Dave, I would be going on the assumption that they would measure the both together. The averages of the scores would probably be better than two separate - Bulldogs and Knights game would be probably higher in NSW, other game higher in QLD, so hoping that the two combined rather than the two separate would have higher averages. Makes no sense though, you would have completely different audience for each.

  • by Beckala on September 13, 2009 at 08:18 PM

Dave, Riverfire also rated better than Channel Tens AFL semi final, 64,000. What's the point you are trying to make?

  • by bobmar28 on September 14, 2009 at 05:22 AM

Bereft Skerrick, Anne of Green Gables was a travesty. Anyone who didn't know the story could not have understood it, as so many scenes were cut. I was half-expecting Uncle Matt's famous death scene to be left out.
J Bar, I think City Homicide's falling ratings are not just about a shift in timeslots.

  • by Professor Rosseforp on September 15, 2009 at 05:52 PM

A first for me on TV, a joke about a urinal cake! and it was funny! Yep Chuck on FOX8 continues to go places unexpected. Nice dream sequence featuring the aussie (and former Sea Patrol and Double the Fist Star!) Yvonne Strahavski in a teddy. I read that Nine had this show and passed on it, is that true?
