The Who We Are update: Week 33

This week's forum is now a heritage item - worth studying but no longer current. For the latest on Australian attitudes and media trends, go to blogs.sunherald.com.au/whoweare.

To learn why Australians are going back to the stone age in their digital viewing, go to The Tribal Mind.

The ratings race, updated 10 am Monday
These were the prime time audience shares at the end of a week without Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation: SBS2 0.4 per cent; ONE 1.1; ABC2 1.4; GO 1.7; SBS 5.6 per cent; ABC 16.7; Ten 20.6; Nine 25.1; Seven 27.4.

Note that those percentages represent a share of free to air prime time viewing. If you include subscription TV, you get a different picture. This was Pay's account of itself: "In week 35, subscription TV was the number one source of television across Australia. STV channels represented 22.3% of all metropolitan viewing between 6am and midnight, 21.7% of all regional viewing and 57.5% of all viewing in subscription TV homes.

"As the football home-and-away schedules draw to a close, 282,000 people watched Live: NRL Titans v Wests Tigers and 232,000 saw Live: AFL Fremantle v Essendon; 105,000 people viewed Live: Cricket: Ashes: Day 4 Session 1 and 92,000 people saw Australia battle South Africa in Live: Rugby Union: Tri Nations (all on FOX Sports).

"In entertainment programming this week, NCIS on TV1 was seen by 131,000 people and Movie One's premiere of Indiana Jones: Kingdom of Crystal Skull was watched by 127,000 viewers. America's Next Top Model on FOX8 was seen by 116,000 people, Project Runway Australia had a season-to-date high with 108,000 viewers and iCarly on Nickelodeon also had a year-to-date best audience with 94,000 viewers. Destroyed in Seconds on Discovery Channel was seen by 84,000 people and the Michael Kanaan expose in Crime Investigation Australia on Crime & Investigation was watched by 83,000 people."

And if you thought Australian Idol was a flop this year, examine this chart, which suggests that it is working well with its target audience ...

Desperately trying to boost the audience for Australian Idol, Channel Ten shoved it into the slot normally occupied by Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation. But Australians are no longer creatures of habit. The mainland capitals audience in the timeslot dropped from 1.6 million to 1.0 million.

Here's how the prime time audience was shared last night: Seven 33.0 per cent; Ten 23.4; Nine 22.7; ABC1: 12.5; SBSONE: 4.0; GO: 1.6; ABC2: 1.5; ONE: 0.7; SBSTWO: 0.6. Did anybody pay their last respects to Patrick Swayze in The Beast?

The ratings race, updated 10 am Tuesday
Yesterday Channel Nine put out this press release:

GO! MAKES HISTORY AS AUSTRALIA'S MOST SUCCESSFUL MULTI-CHANNEL LAUNCH
GO!, Australia's newest free-to-air television channel is the most successful multi-channel ever to launch, breaking records in all markets. With the youngest median age (31) of any of the Freeview TV channels, GO! secured a 5.6% share of the viewing audience across People 16-39 (5 City Metro, 6pm to midnight) on Sunday, a staggering 460% greater than ONE HD on debut. GO! was also strong across People 18-49 (4.4%) and 25-54 (3.9%) in the 6pm to midnight slot.
davros.jpg The screening of
The Big Bang Theory on GO! has also set an impressive benchmark. Screening at 7.30pm on Sunday night, the comedy series attracted an average 230,000 viewers across all demographics, making it the highest rating program in the survey year-to-date across the subscription TV and multi-channel platform, excluding sports events, in the 5 City Metro market. This result surpasses the result of FOX8's flagship Australia's Next Top Model Live Finale, which averaged 185,000 earlier this year.
Nine Network CEO, Mr David Gyngell, said: "This is a terrific result for GO! and for free-to-air television. Viewers have embraced the channel and what it has to offer, and to be recording this sort of outcome within a couple of weeks of our soft launch is very good news for Australian television and the PBL Media Group. This multi-channel gives our viewers access, free of charge, to a second channel that offers a great range of entertainment. I'm gratified that GO! has delivered such strong ratings already."

Day two of GO's ratings were a little different. Here's how the prime time audience divided up last night: Seven 29.5 per cent; Nine 24.8; ABC1: 15.7; Ten 19.8; SBSONE: 5.8; GO: 1.6; ABC2: 1.3; ONE: 1.0; SBSTWO: 0.5. Coincidentally, Eddie McGuire's Hot Seat on NIne has now slipped back behind Andrew O'Keefe's Deal Or No Deal on Seven. Its audience figure is no longer added to the figure for GO's Bewitched, which appears in the chart below. Also below you will see what was the most watched show across the new digital channels.

The ratings race, updated 11am Monday
Finally OzTAM has started releasing data on audiences for GO (Nine's new digital channel, for which this column refuses to use the exclamation mark). We publish them below, along with figures for the other digital offspring of the broadcast dinosaurs.

A whole new world of choice, and what does Nine offer? The Flintstones, The Nanny and The Jetsons. And how many people in the mainland capitals take the opportunity to visit this new world? Consider this chart and tell us what it implies about Australians. Or hold your fire till tomorrow, when we'll know if Eddie McGuire's apparent growth last week was because OzTAM was adding Go's figures to Nine's mainstream programming.

Here's how the prime time audience divided up last night: Seven 26.0 per cent; Nine 21.3; ABC1: 19.7; Ten 18.1; SBSONE: 8.7; GO: 2.8; ONE: 1.9; ABC2: 1.1; SBSTWO: 0.4.

COMMENTS

Dear TM, did Dreamland Surprise (awfully strange German take on Star Trek etc) on SBS2 rate last night? It was on around 10pm and was awfully awfully strange. Did I mention it was strange?
Says a lot for what else was on last night if I was reduced to watching it.

Tribal Mind replies: It does not appear among the 254 programs listed for yesterday, which suggests that no person in the 3,000 households measured by OzTAM was watching it. Presumably you are not one of OzTAM's panellists.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on August 24, 2009 at 10:43 AM

MIDSOMER MURDERS rated well for the ABC, as I expected! Getting a little predictable & staid after 10 years or so, but the charming English villiage scenes suck you in every time, and John Nettles/Jason Hughes are an engaging duo on screen.
Ten must be worried about AUSTRALIAN IDOL: will the arrival of the new judge revive their audience numbers?
And, how soon before Nine pulls the plug on RESCUE SPECIAL OPS?

  • by Evan on August 24, 2009 at 10:48 AM

Those numbers for Go are pretty low really. But I am pretty astonished that there are that many people out there that wanted to see The Jetsons, Flintstones and all those other old programs. Can't Nine use Go to put on some quality programming instead of reaching in the cupboard marked "1960s" and dusting off these old, old programms? Is that what they thought this "new" channel was for, getting rid of rubbish?
I had hoped that Nine would use it for good instead of evil. Seems I am to be disappointed again. Actually, a friend of mine said just the other day how he was going to go out and buy a new TV so he could get all those new channels. He was pretty excited too. I didn't have the heart to tell him how disappointing it all is.

  • by em on August 24, 2009 at 11:02 AM

Clearly Nine program ratings for last week INCLUDED those of Go. Otherwise Rescue Special Ops ratings would have been worse last week / better this week. Either way, it's not doing well at all.

  • by arthur on August 24, 2009 at 11:02 AM

Dreamland Surprise. Whoops I meant Dreamship Surprise, which did make it into the list. Which means I'm very bad at either reading or German!
Remember TM, I live on the South Coast. No one cares what I watch or think!

Tribal MInd replies: Ah, the name change makes all the difference. Huge hit, it was. They must have been measuring you after all.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on August 24, 2009 at 11:09 AM

Maybe it should not be GO!! as much as WHY??

  • by JessP on August 24, 2009 at 01:44 PM

It seems Go! was artificially boosting Nine's ratings for the last two weeks. We have to revise how well Rescue Special Ops did over the last two weeks and say it has actually done realy badly with those ratings. The success of other Nine shows reported over the last two weeks look very suss now.

  • by J Bar on August 24, 2009 at 03:11 PM

"WHY??" is right! There must be some WB suits chuckling over the alleged $500-million 5 year contract that sees 9 HD Programming Heaven with r-e-p-e-a-t-s of shows that have been screened countless times on most Pay-TV platforms. Mr Gyngell - just sell the remnants of the network to Mr Gordon...

  • by D@GP on August 24, 2009 at 06:10 PM

Channel 7 have almost the same night time line up for Wednesdays and Thursdays; Earl, Scrubs, Family Guys and American Dad. Is this a temporary measure until something big takes their place?

Tribal Mind suspects: I don't think there is anything big left for this year, especially since Seven has to fill the schedule for ITS new digital station.

  • by merciless on August 24, 2009 at 06:27 PM

Well, I actually went looking for The Jetsons to show the small ones on Sunday afternoon. No luck, but I did stumble across Charlie's Angels and Starsky & Hutch. Are they aiming for an audience of stoners, or what? I can't imagine anyone in this age watching such things sober.
And, Ms Skerrick, we recorded "Dreamship Surprise" when SBS1 showed it over Christmas last year. While we didn't keep the recording, some of those songs do get stuck in your head.

A week or two ago I blogged (excuse me, ladies) re the potential of "The Early Roots of Alan Shore", suggesting 7 could repackage the last season of David E Kelley's "The Practice" (establishing the glue of "Boston Legal".) From the 2nd week in Sept, Foxtel's Triple 1 or Hits 111 or whatever it's called, will start "The Practice" - I guess from the 1st ep of the pilot. Now, let's see... the series lasted 8 seasons, with a total of 168 eps. Alan Shore's character debuted in "8PO1" - "We the People", and 21 eps later the series segued into "Boston Legal". Now, that's 146 eps over 7 seasons @ 5 eps per week = 29.2 weeks before us Boston Legal fans can relive the Early Roots of Alan Shore!!!!!!!!!!!! Whew. But then, Foxtel wouldn't start the repeats on 111 BEFORE they screened the entire series, would they...? Even so, I can't wait for the eps to air concerning the Nun With the Head in the Bag... and his return...

How did the 100th episode of Good Game (ABC2) go last night? I'm expecting greater ratings than ordinarily.

Tribal Mind remarks: See above. If that's greater than ordinarily, good luck with your celebrations.

  • by arthur on August 25, 2009 at 08:11 AM

tqd, I watched bits of Charlie's Angels over the last two weekends and was laughing in almost every scene. I remember it having a bit of comedy in the old days but holding up against today's shows and today's production standards it is an absolute joke. Can anybody explain to me how Go! can show these old series and other classics like Seinfeld in the widescreen format, when they weren't filmed that way? The picture hasn't been stretched out wide, because the people's faces don't look stretched out. So have they just cut the top and bottom of the frame to make it fit? It's hard to tell if they are cutting parts of teh picture because it's not obvious if they are. It seems to be wide screen but maybe we're actually missing part of the picture.

  • by J Bar on August 25, 2009 at 09:00 AM

Haha those Good Game ratings are terrible. But I'm sure the show will stay as it's on ABC2!

  • by arthur on August 25, 2009 at 10:08 AM

D@GP, channel 7 did something along those lines in 2007. Advertised it as the beginnings as Alan Shore, but it was 11.30pm and then was moved to after midnight. Was very interesting to see. Especially all the bloating on BL.

  • by Bee on August 25, 2009 at 10:29 AM

Tuned into Idol last night. I don't know why, I was just curious about the new judge and there was little else to tempt me anyway. It really is a very tired old format. Young singers singing the same old songs. Boring really. Nothing exciting or interesting about any of them. I kinda liked the country chick at least she was natural and seemed geunine. But nothing made me want to watch more or run out and buy anyone's future CD. The new judge seemed competent and seemed a nice guy. I guess the whole thing spelled "family friendly". Which is what Ten was hoping for, I suppose, by getting rid of Kyle. It will probably keep getting around the million mark but won't do anything exceptional.

Would be surprised if Ten brings it back next year. It's time is over I think.

  • by em on August 25, 2009 at 11:06 AM

TM is that photo in reference to 'Doctor Who' at number 98 or is it Mr David Gyngell at the controls of Australia's Number One Television Channel? Nine seem to have been sucked in by their own exclamation mark! It makes everything seem so exciting and new! Even a digital channel broadcasting nothing but second rate repeats and stuff they don't know what else to do with! Go! Go! Go! It's like red cordial! Looking forward to 'Hot Seat!' and 'A Current Affair!' They sound, like, totally excellent!
I saw 'District 9' on the weekend. Also 'Let the Right One In' on DVD and the second season of 'Mad Men' which is even better than the first. Didn't watch any tellie! None! I'm so excited!!! I think I'll go run around the block! Yeah!!

Tribal Mind replies: But not Harry Potter? Go to today's update of The Tribal Mind column to see the result of your neglect.

  • by darren on August 25, 2009 at 11:12 AM

After the success of Life on Mars, I was really looking forward to Ashes To Ashes. Why did I bother? I watched about half an hour and gave up in disgust. Sigh.

  • by Shoopie on August 25, 2009 at 11:20 AM

People must have been much stupider in the 70s when they watched Charlie's Angels. How can you not spot the stunt doubles riding horses and motorbikes when the actresses were anorexic stick insects and the people riding the horses were buffed up sheilas.

  • by Bloke from the Sticks on August 25, 2009 at 01:35 PM

Heh the top show on alternative channels is Doctor Who!
If you want a real flashback on TV, one only has to look to Ch7 on a Sunday, as Magnum PI is usually lurking around in his way too tight for AM jeans.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on August 25, 2009 at 03:30 PM

The 'Heckler' column in the SMH this morning is a plea (mixed with outrage) to Channel Ten to reinstate SYTYCD to Friday nights for the last four shows. Anyone like to estimate the odds? Come on Ten, you can do it.....but you won't.
Nice tie-in last night repeating the 'Sherry Bobbins' episode of 'The Simpsons' for the five thousandth time as a promo for a repeat of 'Nanny McPhee' on Friday night for the four hundred and sixty eighth time. Subtle. Next they'll be promoting repeated episodes of 'The Simpsons' with repeated episodes of 'The Flintstones, and promoting repeated episodes of 'The Flinstones' with 'Steamboat Mickey'.
There's that innovative and responsive television station Australia almost came to like during 'MasterChef'. New. Interesting.
I think it's called Idolitis. Looks shiny and freshly showered but can't hold a tune....

  • by darren on August 26, 2009 at 05:57 AM

If you want a real flash back I caught Macgyver on the weekend. Gosh - that was terrible, but I used to love it as a kid.
Question - City Homicide on Monday had supposed kiddie killers - then ad break there was Sunrise talking up the anniversary of the James Bolger case. Now was City Homicide scripted to fall on the anniversary or was it just a happy coincidence?

  • by nic on August 26, 2009 at 07:36 AM

That Sunrise cross promotion during City Homicide made me squirm. I think CH has developed into a top drama. It's a shame they've lost a few viewers from the brief stint on Sundays earlier this year.
Meanwhile at Australian Idol. What happens if nobody bothers to watch this year? Will the record company still want to record an album with the winner if nobody bothers to buy it?

  • by J Bar on August 26, 2009 at 10:13 AM

Look how close Hot Seat was to Deal last night. But more interesting is Hot Seat is nudging in front in each city - except Adelaide and Perth. Why is it so? Do those two 'AFL' states dislike Eddie?

  • by Jill on August 26, 2009 at 10:22 AM

Speaking of Colin Firth (which darren sortof is, because I don't mind Nanny McPhee, because Colin Firth + Period Costume = YUM)....
Therese Rein this morning apparently claims that her husband, our fearless leader Krudd, is like Mr Darcy. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. And now I need brain bleach because I just don't want to imagine Krudd doing the lake scene from Pride & Prejudice.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on August 26, 2009 at 10:33 AM

Nic, I noticed that too. City Homicide ep was shown on the anniversary of the famous Bolger case. Talk about cross promotion but in a kinda sick, creepy way.
I think Seven just stooped to a new low. No coincidence there.
Is this the new thing for networks now, cross promoting one program in the story of another? Ten did it too , as Darren pointed out, with the Simpsons last night. This is so annoying and I find it totally unnecessary. A big turn off. It smacks of desperation or something. Or is it that they think we're all morons and have to be prodded into watching something with the tactic of "if you like this you'll love this" strategy? Whatever it is I really don't like it.

  • by em on August 26, 2009 at 11:13 AM

There's something wrong with my digital channel nines. Anything affiliated with nine for that matter. As much as I want to watch Seinfeld there's no audio or subtitles. Also checked out Ch 9 and just get everyone looking like they're miming stuff. Funny how all the other digital channels are fine...
I don't get Ch 10, slotting in groundhog day movies on Friday. Becomes a late night just waiting for SYTYCD.
Can we still blame Kyle for anything to do with Idol? As much I'd like to bag out Kyle, it surely has got to be the tediousness of the show and being so hem, family friendly. Thanks to them, I missed my weekly dose of Shaun's wit. Could definitely do with more Newstopia right now - missed show indeed.

  • by Kym on August 26, 2009 at 11:21 AM

I was tempted by the Patrick Swayze (it got "show of the week" in The Guide), but it clashes with EW101 which I'm rather gripped by, and with Tony Robinson, which I'm recording for later viewing.
Nothing on for weeks, then everything at once. Argh.

  • by tqd on August 26, 2009 at 12:07 PM

I too thought the City Homicide cross promo was stupid - but as I do not watch the morning tv news shows (or whatever it is they aspire to be) during the week it had no impact.
Not an Idol watcher so I do not care about it.
Mrs Skerrick I too noted the comment about Mr Darcy -can I borrow that bleach?
I will miss the umpteenth repeat of Nanny McPhee on firday as I am off to the movies and no TM it is not to add to Harry Potter's numbers - I have already done so once and rest assured I did not contribute to the numbers for Transformers. This week it is Inglorious basterds.

Tribal MInd wonders: Since Harry seems to be a lost cause, perhaps we should aim to get Basterds above $40.2 million. Too violent for the mass audience, I suspect.

  • by Cathy on August 26, 2009 at 12:12 PM

TM,
I read a wisper on a forum that Ch7 was going to be dropping V8 Supercars because of the poor rating versus time and cost of producing. 1) Is this true?? 2) How did the V8's rate on the weekend?

Tribal Mind replies: 1) Don't know, but someone on this forum will. 2) I've put it into the chart for Sunday, above. Does 275,000 look like a good audience?

  • by JT on August 26, 2009 at 01:02 PM

SMH please do your TV GUIDE in landscape style with the 10 or so channels side by side in time order .Please.

Tribal Mind feels compelled to say: This column and blog has no connection to the SMH TV guide (though we're very fond of them over there), so you should make your request directly to them.

  • by doug on August 26, 2009 at 02:42 PM

Interesting rumour JT, it wouldn't surprise me if V8 Supercars gets dropped by Seven. They paid far too much money for the rights when they took them of TEN and during the aerial ping pong season they only show it as a filler on Sundays.
Since they took over the telecast, races are regularly being shortened to fit in with Seven's schedule. Behind the scene drama and politics doesn't get reported on by them, it is only broadcast in SD. Programme production is at best poor to average, never outstanding. Unfortunately there is not much to commend them for their telecasting of it. In other words, if they stop showing it it won't be a loss, no doubt TEN will pick it up again and resume the excellent job which they did with it when they had it.
On the subject of aerial ping pong, I still cannot fathom why so much money is paid for events such as AFL which have such poor ratings.
By the way, Jill, living in Perth I don't think there is any particular ill feeling towards Eddie and his show, its just that Perth is such a vibrant and busy city, with something always happening, that people have better things to do with their time than watch some quiz show during daylight hours when there are better things to do like count the snails in my back yard, something which seems to take forever. I don't know why, but I keep losing count, having to start again, its' gotten that I have forgotten why I actually started doing it but there must be a reason so I am off, the snails are awaiting.....

  • by Zjonn on August 26, 2009 at 03:18 PM

Any opinions on The Beast with Patrick Swayze on ABC2. Seemed like a generic undercover cop on the edge training a new young (ADHD?) partner. But wait, for a complete surprise twist, the young partner is supposed to investigate/inform on the older, brilliant cop for internal affairs. Although this one is FBI. Nothing new really. I don't think I'll watch again next week because I didn't really understand anything that happened this week. Too noisy and hard to follow for me and I found the dialogue baffling.

  • by Suze on August 26, 2009 at 04:48 PM

The whole Ch 7/V8 supercars thing seemed to have died when Grant Denyer decided to get attacked by a monster truck (which I saw parked shortly afterwards on the side of the road @ Yallah (just at the end of the F6 freeway just before Albion Park Rail) and didn't have the chance to thank for getting him off our TV screens. He was one of Ch 7's main personalities and that extra inch or so of height he lost, along with his TV presence, has coincided with their seeming disinterest in V8's.

Or it could be the whole economic crisis/waste of fuel angle. Who knows, who cares.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on August 26, 2009 at 09:32 PM

Pleaseeeee Channel 10 if you could put SYTYCD back on at 7.30 or even 8.30. Your movies don't rate and there are a legion of fans out there wanting to watch the final episodes at a decent time!!

  • by Clem on August 26, 2009 at 09:39 PM

Come on youse Gels, Kev as Darcy......emerging dripping from the lake with his puffyshirt clinging to his pointy man-titties, hair still dry and all in perfect place, RM Williamses sloshing, Terese as Elizabeth with heaving bosom on the bank......can't you see it now?......
"At this point going forward does thou feel an unspecified and previously unacknowledged attraction to mine nether regions? Oh dear it would appear my pants are soak'd through. I must away before my buttocks catch their death but first dear working family daughter aged fifteen to twenty-one, pray tell wouldst one deign to engage with me for high tea at the next opportune moment to peruse, nay, investigate to the fullest degree, my Stimulus Package? Yes I think one would.".....

  • by darren on August 27, 2009 at 06:00 AM

By the way TM, Kyle didn't drive those 500,000 viewers away from Ch10, cos the the new judge started this week.
Zjonn - I'm sure if you write to Don Burke he can help you with the snail problem.

  • by Jill on August 27, 2009 at 07:33 AM

Darren, you crack me up. And seriously disturb me at the same time. Now I need the mental bleach to get that picture out of my head. Ughh, Yuck, Yuck ugh!!!!!
I think you may have ruined that particular
scene from P&P for me for life. Errrrrr! (me still shuddering)

  • by em on August 27, 2009 at 07:39 AM

Darren, please don't! I only watched Pride & Prejudice the other day when I was layed up with a dodgey back and I still have the original Mr Darcy coming out of the lake freshly imprinted (for the 50th time) in my mind. I really don't want to think of Kev in that light. mmmmmmm Mr (Colin Firth) Darcy mmmmmmm

  • by Nic on August 27, 2009 at 07:44 AM

NOOOOOOO Darren, very bad Darren... need to think happy thoughts quickly or the images you have conjured will burn into my brain..... insert image of Hugh in Australia all wet..(no dialogue, no Nicole - better now).

  • by Cathy on August 27, 2009 at 08:09 AM

darren: I'm sure there's a special place in TV Hell just for you.

And now for the highlight of my viewing weekend: Suggs from Madness is Guest Programmer on Rage on Aunty on Saturday Evening! The same Madness I made the trek north to see @ Luna Park in March for the Best Ever Concert Ever. The ratings should be awesome. Now if only they'd play them on the radio.....

7PM Project is getting hit and miss with their guests. Hit: Todd Sampson, ad exec and Gruen (alleged, I just dont' see it) heartthrob discussing how to advertise Australia last night (Now darren, this is something I challenge you to come up with something for, but it must be devoid of Krudd's man-titties)

Miss: Shrieky-Lee and her ex-husband hating bobblehead. Make the bad cross promotion and bad lady go away!

  • by Bereft Skerrick on August 27, 2009 at 09:05 AM

Missed the first half of "My Name Is Earl" last night, but the second half was one of the funniest I'd seen for a while. I need an "Estrada or Nada" t-shirt. Recorded "United States of Tara" for future viewing.

  • by tqd on August 27, 2009 at 10:29 AM

Happened to catch Aussie Idol last night because my VCR normally tapes The Simpsons in that slot. The brickie/tradie who has only sung twice before in public was about the only good performance. The comments from judges were like a repeat of every other show from the last six years. Did anybody notice the young lady with the decolletage behind JayDee's shoulder. I suppose that's one way of boosting ratings for a dying show.
Rumours suggest that the All Saints finale will be huge and there's no coming back from this one. In other words, even if they wanted to keep the show going, they wouldn't be able to.

  • by J Bar on August 27, 2009 at 10:41 AM

Ah, gotta love it when a plan comes together. There was another version which integrated Rudd's 'Full Monty' comment where he comes out of the lake wearing a hardhat and fluorescent vest and 'You Can Keep Your Hat On' starts to play......No?
Bereft Skerrick, re the 'Australia' problem, I did have a few ideas:
--"Australia - Our Favourite Movie is 'Transformers 2'"....or
--"Australia - If You Come, We'll Send Lara Bingle to Bali With A Boogieboard Bag Full of Dope".....or
--"Australia - Who Do YOU Want Us To Be?"....or
--"Australia - Please Please Please Please Please Love Us"......
Now where's my $20 million?

  • by darren on August 27, 2009 at 11:17 AM

....even if they wanted to keep the show going, they wouldn't be able to....
Soap operas such as All Saints have never been hobbled by fact or the consequence of reality. The producers would probably reveal the whole catastrophe only occurred in a dream by one of characters.

Tribal Mind wonders: What earlier comment are you referring to?

  • by TGO on August 28, 2009 at 09:56 AM

TGO: are you suggesting that perhaps All Saints ends by the last few seasons being a hallucination caused by the brain tumour that Dr Mitch Stevens had umpteen years ago. Like a Pam and Bobby Ewing moment on Dallas? He wakes up, goes to take a shower, and finds Nurse Terri in the shower?

  • by Bereft Skerrick on August 28, 2009 at 04:22 PM

Tribal Mind wonders: What earlier comment are you referring to?
Sorry old chap I was vague on that one. My post was in response to J Bar on August 27, 2009 at 10:41 AM regarding the All Saints finale.

I was reading The Age tv guide this afternoon, and it come up with an interesting way to describe 60 Minutes
"Join the gang for some sunday night entertainment pretending to be journalism".
Ouch!!!!!!

TM, any theory as to why 16-39 year-olds in Melbourne watch a lot more tellie than 16-39 year-olds in Sydney? They especially seem to favour 'Two and a Half Men' and 'The Farmer Wants a Wife'. Might be that elusive pocket of stupidity we've all been looking for. Melbourne youth.

Tribal Mind replies: The usual explanation for higher vjewing figures in Melbourne is "nothing else to do". Since Underbelly, that has become "no-one left to shoot".

David - Nine's running another clip show on Sunday night. I saw the TV listing today. I can't believe it.
Without even seeing the show in advance I already know what's on there:
1) The labrador pissing on Graham Kennedy's leg on IMT.
2) The Elephant taking a dump on The Mike Walsh Show.
3) Ron Casey & Normie Rowe going the biff on Midday.
4) Bert Newton telling Muhammad Ali "I like The Boy".
5) The bomb going off on from Number 96 followed by the Midnight Knicker Snipper.
6) Molly dying at the on the verandah on Country Practice
7) Alan Bond stomping on Paul Barry's business card.
8) Don Lane walking through the twirling rifles from the US Marine Corps
9) The nude couple doing their washing in the laundromat on Number 96.
10) Dickie Knee getting bashed up by Visiting B-List celebrity.
11) Michael Cole's Logies Speech
12) 14 Minutes recycled from the Worst of Red Faces
13) Barry Jones questioning Bob Dyer on Pick A Box or whatever the show was.
14) The two blokes from Beaconsfield closely followed by Steve Irwin.
15) Larry Emdur and the over excited Price Is Right contestant.
16) Ron Casey having a blue with Jana Wendt on ACA
17) Peter Costello doing the Macarena on Midday
18) Don Lane telling James Randy to Piss Off
19) Graham Kennedy doing a 4 minute dance onto the set of IMT
20) Kylie & Jason's wedding on Neighbours
21) Norman Gunston standing behind Gough Whitlam on 11/11/75
Nine's pathetic - when they run out of ideas they recycle the same tired crap we've seen every 6 months on 20-1 and every other clip show.

IF 7 wants watchers, please stop putting those annoying and distracting banners across the bottom of the programs announcing what is now and what comes next and sometimes what comes after that. Why do the banners always seem to block out something important -like the gun in someone's hand etc., and please give us some GOOD drama, that doesn't have to be interspersed with the compulsory sex scene, the complusory foul language, etc. and unbelievable things i.e. in channel 10's new RUSH the head lady copper, (in the 1st episode) trashed her ex husband's car, but no reprimand for on high, no complaint made by said husband, then in another unbelievable scene runs over a bikie while talking on her cell phone and again, nothing happens, she is still in the picture shouting orders. etc., I have never been able to watch a complete episode - it must make real policemen either vomit or fall about laughing. What has happened to good, drama with a good plot and just once leave out the compulsory sex that has usually nothing to do with the plot. And as for humor, a little less toilet humour would be nice, and it might actually be funny. We just want good quality TV. or else (my alternative) a good book.
