The Who We Are update: Week 25

To discuss URST (UnResolved Sexual Tension) in television, and how it gets burst, go to The Tribal Mind.
To learn how Hollywood finally discovered Australia, go to Who We Are.

The ratings race, updated 11am Monday
It couldn't last, of course. After Seven showed a pile of football on Friday night, Channel Ten had to relinquish its leadership in audience share. But its strong showing in the first three days of the week, mainly due to Masterchef, meant that the final prime time averages were: Seven 27.0 per cent of the audience, Ten 25.8 per cent, Nine 25.2, ABC 17.1, SBS 5.0.

Nine's only good news was a modest success for its new show Random Acts of Kindness. This week Nine will do better because of Wednesday's biffo, but for the whole ratings year, it's now a real race between Nine and Ten for second spot.

This was Pay TV's account of itself: "378,000 fans saw the Socceroos defeat Japan 2-1 in FOX Sports' coverage of Live: Football: World Cup Qualifier Aust v Japan, the final game of the football World Cup qualifying series for the Australian team. On the previous night, Australia's Next Top Model on FOX8 drew a season record 235,000 people (327,000 people including the Plus2 audience).

"In other programming this week, 292,000 viewers watched Live: NRL Eels v Wests Tigers; 247,000 people saw Live: AFL Adelaide v North Melbourne and the Live: AFL Pre Game Show on Sunday afternoon had its best result for 2009 with 209,000 people (all on FOX Sports). Sky Race Day on Sky Racing on Saturday also had a year-to-date biggest audience with 84,000 viewers. NCIS on TV1 was watched by 121,000 people; Eastenders on UKTV had a year-to-date high of 98,000 viewers and 10,000 BC premiered on Movie One with 96,000 viewers. Hannah Montana on Disney Channel was watched by 85,000 people; Selling Houses Australia on Lifestyle was seen by 80,000 viewers and Man vs. Wild: Will Ferrell Special premiered on Discovery Channel with 77,000 viewers.

"In week 25, subscription TV was the number one source of television across Australia for the twentieth week of the year. Between 6am and midnight, STV channels accounted for 21.7% of all metropolitan viewing; 21.7% of all regional viewing and 57.6% of all viewing in subscription TV homes."

The ratings race, updated 10 am Friday
At this point in the week, Channel Ten's usual boost from Merlin and Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation has drizzled away. But Masterchef has been performing so strongly this week that Ten finds itself in the unprecedented Friday position of still leading in audience share -- 27.2 per cent of prime time viewers, in fact, while Seven has 26.9 per cent, Nine 25.4, ABC 15.6 and SBS 4.9. This column is updated on Saturday mornings and on Sunday mornings, so return in 24 hours to learn if Ten can maintain its lead, or at least keep Nine in third position.

Three days into the week and the prime time audience shares stand at: Ten 28.4 per cent, Seven 26.0, Nine 24.9, ABC 15.8, SBS 4.8. Ten won't win the week, because its programming collapses from this point on, but it might beat Nine.

COMMENTS

Looks like many more people switching on the TV (especially Masterchef) in these cold nights.

Three hours of continuous CSI (I think) cost Nine the win on Sunday.

  • by arthur on June 15, 2009 at 09:49 AM

Viewers of the wonderful Spooks - last week was the 2007 season final, and tonight we go straight into the 2008 season.
When it was shown in Britain, there was a 10-month gap between the episodes which we are seeing a week apart.
Expect some surprises. (Unless you saw the preview last week. Idiots give plotlines away so we try not to watch previews any more).

  • by Sal on June 15, 2009 at 12:37 PM

Times have changed and I am glad the public have too. In 2006/2007, 3 hours of CSI (even repeats) would have won Nine the night

  • by Tim on June 15, 2009 at 12:40 PM

Oh noes! We recorded the second half of "3 Acts of Murder" while we swapped over to watch "Castle", then came back to watch the end of "3 Acts of Murder". Only to find out it cut off before the end! I think it was probably the final scene (Arthur Upfield with his wife, and she was wearing a red dress instead of one of those endless pale blue aprons). Can anyone fill me in?
I thought it was rather good, if a bit bitsy at times. Seemed to jump around from plot point to plot point. (Of course, I was somewhat distracted by knitting at the time, so maybe it was me, not them.)
Merlin is rating its little socks off, isn't it?

  • by tqd on June 15, 2009 at 01:20 PM

I think MasterChef is also helping Rove - 1.2 million - much stronger ratings than he had been getting (but also helped by the move to 8:30pm, I feel). However, last night's was not one of his best, and for that I put the blame at Isabel Lucas - how on earth did that girl get an acting job in such a huge movie?! She can barely string two words together. Absolutely appalling - thank god for Ross Noble.

But other than that blip, for his part, I think he's had a few good shows. I'm a huge fan of Hamish and Andy, their material is always pretty good. And Rove is getting a little more biting - his stuff on the 'Reject the Recession' dancers a few weeks ago was great.

Finally, just have to say (and Bereft, you may agree on this one) GO THE DRAGONS! Great game yesterday!

  • by Beckala on June 15, 2009 at 04:54 PM

Have been out of the television world for about a fortnight, and realised how much I missed it. Any TV is good TV. Those are massive ratings last night all round! I'm especially surprised about Random Acts of Kindness. The previews put me off big time.
Ross Noble is always a delight, and tuned into Rove to see him. Worth every second he was on. Isabel Lucas on the other hand seemed extremely standoffish. Taped 3 Acts of Murder, yet to see it.
Thank you Auntie for showing the next season of Spooks so quickly (quickly enough).

  • by Kym on June 15, 2009 at 05:31 PM

Beckala: Master 5-in-6-days-time ran around my lounge room screeching RED AND WHITE DYNAMITE :)
Isabel Lucas seems to have as much personality as Dave Hughes is funny. But never fear! Micallef will be on Rove next week!

Tribal Mind wonders: But that would mean having to put up with Rove. The key question is: Will Micallef ever be back on Thank God You're Here?

  • by Bereft Skerrick on June 15, 2009 at 10:43 PM

Yes that Isabel Lucas thing was excruciating. She must be a bottle brunette. Or maybe headband too tight?
It was a relief to see Merlin save Arthur from the cluthes of a woman. Again. No, not gay at all.
I'm deep in the middle of the 3rd season of 'Six Feet Under' at the moment. And loving it. Hating most of what else is on tellie after the last few weeks' endless outrage. Very tired.
Looking forward to seeing Benita and Kram on 'Talkin Bout etc etc' tonight (and the incomparable Micallef) and did I see Jeanne Garafalo as a guest on 'Spicks and Specks' in a promo for this week? I think I did. Good. All is not lost.

  • by darren on June 16, 2009 at 05:55 AM

GNW was great last night. Ross Noble stole the show, so funny. Maybe someone ought to give him his own show would have to be better than most of the so called comedy we get these days.

And have to agree with comments here about Isabel Lucas on Rove. That girl had better be a good actress cause she sure can't do a decent interview. Thick as two planks!

And back to GNW what was with Will Anderson and that haircut? Looked like a GI Joe reject.

  • by em on June 16, 2009 at 07:56 AM

TM: despite a mention of Micallef in an article on TGYH last week, I don't think he'll grace their stage on Ch 7. Ch Shirl gibbons may not like putting their new shining light on another channel. SBS is another matter, because obviously fewer are going to see Amanda Keller drive the Proton on TopGearOz, and fewer still watch Newstopia/Inspektor Herringe. Micallef is a drawcard, and TGYH is up against Shirl's other drawcard of Masterchef.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on June 16, 2009 at 08:34 AM

I never fail to have a smile at all the "new age" thinking by the programming gibbons of every persuasion who continually juggle their schedules in the hope of getting a ratings lift from a more popular preceeding program. If a program is crap, putting something more popular before it doesnt change that fact. I see 7 have shafted Sunday Night and hope that its increased popularity in that time slot will translate to good numbers for some tedious dancing twaddle. If people are watching "current affiars infotainment" they are not going to be satisfied with a substitute. As for Rove getting a lift from MC's increased numbers, there must be some mighty lazy people about that cant be bothered expending the energy to push the remote and change the chanel. If it was crap before, no matter what you proceed it with, it is still crap!

  • by ozinoz on June 16, 2009 at 09:32 AM

More good Spooks last night......we got to keep Jo, Ros found her way back from those pesky Russians, but it looks like Adam "get out of my way I'm indisructible" Carter may not be seen for a few shows !! PLUS we now get Guy of Gisborne, who next ?? Rose from Dr Who !!!!!

Saw State of Play on Sat & was really impressed, the whole thing was well acted, well written & had many layers of storylines & issues. The one that really made me think was the old style of a newspaper reporting the story vs the instant gratification of the internet style of making & reporting the "news". (And here's me writing on a blog about news!!)I was prepared to be disappointed after the British series, but I can assure people go & see it & you will be entertained.

  • by PJ453 on June 16, 2009 at 10:56 AM

Loved Spooks last night - so much tension! Also was a great episode of Despos - it is a great season.
GNW however leaves me completely cold. I have seen the repeat late on Saturday nights (when there is nothing else on TV)and it really is the most contrived, unfunny show (in my opinion) with the team leaders clearly reading their scripted answers from some cue card on the desk most of the time and cracking themselves up by their own scripted wit and scripted cleverness. I just don't enjoy it. But it is getting reasonably good ratings, so perhaps I am in the minority.

  • by Jill on June 16, 2009 at 03:59 PM

What movie is Isabel Lucas in? Who is Isabel Lucas? Not even the appearance of Ross Noble would induce me to watch Rove.
Did anyone watch Four Corners last night? Pity the same outrage as shown to the Chaser's skit wasn't voiced over Mr Ward's death.
Please PJ453, cut your tongue out for even suggesting Rose for Spooks!! May have to dump Colin in favour of Richard Armitage - he sure is pretty. Just loved him in North and South.

  • by Shoopie on June 16, 2009 at 05:24 PM

Jill, I agree. I seem to constantly stumble upon the last 20 minutes of "Spooks" and end up absolutely riveted. But petrified with fear at the same time, because I'm still traumatised by a death from Season 1 (and I haven't watched it since). And now it's got Guy of Gisbourne in it, and is on after Flight of the Conchords (I'm not afraid to change channels!), I might be watching it a bit more thoroughly.
Shoopie, I went to IMDB, and Ms Lucas was in Home & Away and seems to have jumped from there to the latest Transformers (more than meets the eye) movie. I assume her cheekbones helped in the casting decision.
And how come I actually remember to record Scrubs, and it's an episode I've seen twice already? What about all the episodes I haven't seen yet, why do I never record them??

  • by tqd on June 16, 2009 at 09:17 PM

Shoopie - Isabel Lucas. Where to start? She got her start in Home and Away as a mute (god, don't we all wish those days were here again!). She had such memorable storylines such as joining a cult (and I'd like to mention I didn't actually watch this, but managed to see enough from the ads and the groundbreaking interviews in TV Week). She has since moved to LA where she dated Adrien Grenier (honestly, how could such a fruitloop get such a good looking guy? Methinks they share a possible "herbal" interest...) - but that relationship broke up after she was in a car accident with Shia Lebouf - with the implication being she was with him on the sly. She is in the new Transformers movie.
To give you an example of how painful she is (and how she managed to make Rove look like a skilled interviewer)
Rove: So, I hear you have qyite a story about your audition.
Isabel: (15 second pause). Um. Yeah. I. Guess. (20 second pause). Um. I guess I wasn't wearing a (10 second pause) good enough outfit. (20 second pause). So, Um. Um, Um, I guess, Um. I had to go and like. Um, Buy another dress.
Rove: Why was that.
Isabel: Um. Woah. Um. I guess, um, I wasn't, um, what would you call it? Um, like they wanted it to look like (10 second pause) summer. Because um, it was going to be in summer. (20 second pause) So, um, I had to like, go and like try to find, um, a new dress.
Yes, it was that painful. I seriously have absolutely no idea how this girl somehow managed to get a job in any movie, let alone a blockbuster like Transformers. Her tone reminded me of a very obscure ad on channel 31 (is that the right number?) with Mark "The Poo" Phillop... (can't be stuffed looking up the spelling). He was advertising a paint ball field, but apparently had not heard that sometimes it's nice to make your voice sound different rather than completely the same - he was definitely a fan of the monotone. I was already a bit wary of the Transformer movies - any of the footage I saw with the transformers talking, I found almost laughable. But she has well and truly made this movie 'jump the shark'. Whoever is the director has no idea about talent. As long as she has a big chest and is attractive, there will be a place for her in the transformer films - Megan Fox is the perfect example. Why look at silly things like talent?

  • by Beckala on June 16, 2009 at 09:36 PM

Isabel Lucas, Shoopie, is an 'actress' who used to 'act' in 'Home and Away' and can now be seen 'acting' in the new 'Transformers' movie. Since she is an Australian, all Australians must now go see the new 'Transformers' movie or be deported to one of those silly progressive free-thinking countries like New Zealand or Norway.
She's as personable as a limp dish rag and showcased it on 'Rove' t'other night.
PJ453, I went to see 'State of Play' a little ways back and agree it's excellent. I normally detest Russell Crowe but he does the 'overweight slob' well. Amazing how Ben Affleck aged with a Congressman's haircut. Have you seen 'Gone Baby Gone' which Affleck directed? If you haven't I recommend it. Similar feeling to 'The Wire' and stars the actress who plays Beadie Russell in 'The Wire's second season in a very different role.
The closing sequence of 'State of Play' capped it off didn't it? Poignant. Although I had to hold onto my seat as the usher kids came in and stood there rolling their eyes and holding their brooms and dust trays and tapping their feet.
Helen Mirren's line (which I can't exactly remember) about getting four stories out of an inaccurately researched initial story reminded me of the Tracey/Gordon/Chaser/Zappia/Matty Johns crap that's been going on lately. It's like that scene from 'The Birds' starring the Public as Tippi Hendren and the Media as.. um, the birds. Very tiring.
I'm pleased to see I appear to be able to spell today.

  • by darren on June 17, 2009 at 05:59 AM

Has anyone else noticed that we now have three channels named One HD? Channels 1, 11 and 30.

Tribal MInd asks: I don't understand the question. You mean that you get the new 24-hour sports channel operated by Ten on three different numbers? That certainly doesn't happen on my Foxtel box, where 1 is TV1, 11 is HITS and 30 is blank. And I don't get ONE (the sports channel) at all.

  • by bobmar28 on June 17, 2009 at 06:55 AM

Shoopie - the tongue stays where it is. I would have thought the "correct" putdown would be "cut off your fingers" as you've never heard me speak, but I get your drift!
darren - Have seen "Gone Baby Gone" & it was quite disturbing with numerous twists. Mainly watched it due to the many times it was on a "top 10 movies of the year" list.
Couldn't agree more about the final scenes of "State of Play". Many, many moons ago as part of some excursion I went to see how they printed a newspaper, even played with the type-setting machine.....ie the individual letters, & being with all those people along the process line. So the final scenes had quite an effect on me. As to Mirren's line that "news makes news" was one of the themes that confirmes the theory that "the media" have to have something "new" purely & simply, even if it's unsubstantiated.

  • by PJ453 on June 17, 2009 at 08:27 AM

I like Rove! There, I have said it.
He does a much better job than some other "comedy chatshows" around the world. I like the idea of having the guests involved on the couch. I like the live music. It reminds me a bit of (although not as good as) TFI Friday (Chris Evans UK show that was on for 5 years in the 90's, although that was the best comedy chatshow in my opinion).
Why do Australians hate Rove so much. Is it Rove or is it the format? It is comedy and it makes me laugh and in my simple world that is good enough for me.

  • by Irish on June 17, 2009 at 09:01 AM

I think bobmar28 means that the SBS HD channel is also called One HD. The watermark has 'ONE' so clearly shown that my flatmate got it confused with the 10 HD channel. I think Channel 10 copyright/brand lawyers will want to look into that one...

  • by merciless on June 17, 2009 at 09:41 AM

bobmar28 - Concur "ONE" is on Channels 1 & 11, will have to check Ch30 tonight .... stay tuned.
TM - Gee, maybe on "PayTV" you have to pay to get a "free to air" channel ??
Does anyboby know who pays for the "Freeview" advertising, because it is really getting up my nose & I'd like to throw a shoe at somebody!!

  • by PJ453 on June 17, 2009 at 09:50 AM

I'd like to thank the ABC for scheduling the State of the Union show for Tuesdays 9.30pm to replace Mumbai Calling. Tuesdays is a wasteland ATM so I'll look forward to this highlight. Tracey Ullman is a genius. I can't believe that some people on this learned blog find her bland and unfunny.
And while I'm venting, Johnathon Ross is ten times better than that hour of forced laughter known as Rove Live. I hope he stays somewhere on the Ch7 Monday late night slot.

  • by merciless on June 17, 2009 at 09:50 AM

Rove is very much like Hey Hey It's Saturday (there darren - I said HHiS, don't throw a shoe at me). It makes you cringe and people bag it incessantly, but it's a throwback to the way TV shows used to be. Variety TV. A reason why DWTS is so popular with the oldies. How would Don Lane or Graham Kennedy-type shows fare in today's reality obsessed climate? Crow calls would be nothing, and they'd be chock full of informercials like the morning shows.
Anyone else read that the Masterchef contestants are *shock horror* stabbing each other in the back?

  • by Bereft Skerrick on June 17, 2009 at 12:18 PM

I, too, liked "State of Play." I am not often a Russ Crowe fan but this was a good vehicle for him. He suited the part of overweight , slovenly journalist well.
And it was one of Ben Afleck's better roles at least in recent years. He has had some dogs!
I have to admit to liking Rove. I don't watch his show very often but he seems a decent guy and his show is a nice bit of fluff that is sometimes all I want on a Sunday night. And congrats to him on his wedding to Tasma Walton. I hope they are very happy together , they both deserve it.
Also, I am glad to see Ten doing so well this week. Good to see them beating Nine who really deserve to be number 3.
And to think it's a cooking show that is helping Ten make it to the top. Who would have thought it.

  • by em on June 17, 2009 at 01:16 PM

merciless, I suppose there had to be somebody out there who thought Tracey Ullman and Jonathan Ross were funny otherwise the network programmers wouldn't bother to schedule them in prime time. I wouldn't waste my time with either of those because they barely raise a smile and are more like to induce severe cringes. I would prefer 30 Rock at 10.30pm rather than Jonathan Ross there now. I'm not a massive fan of Rove but don't mind the show. I'd pick him over Jonathan Ross any day. Congrats to Rove & Tasma Walton who secretly tied the knot in Broome today.
Interesting to note that Masterchef is doing almost double what Big Brother was doing in that slot at this time last year. Talkin' 'bout Your Generation is absolutely massive now too and pulling the sort of ratings that Packed to the Rafters managed to achieve. Speaking of which, new Packed to the Rafters 'porridge promo' during All Saints last night was hilarious. Can't wait.

  • by J Bar on June 17, 2009 at 02:27 PM

How can you think that Jonathan Ross is funny and Rove is not? Rove is mildly amusing and JR is nowhere near funny.
Boston Legal, Scrubs, 30 Rock. Now that's what you call funny.

  • by wing ding on June 17, 2009 at 03:15 PM

Just came to the realisation the revelation of backstabbing on Masterchef comes on the morning of the night that TGYH is on. Ch Shirl's publicity gibbons obviously cooked this up. If Masterchef can steal some viewers from TGYH tonight they've got a chance of running 2nd this week.
Good luck to Rove and his bride Tasma. Have read comments elsewhere bagging him for "moving on so soon" after the passing of Belinda Emmett.
I accidentally turned onto Jonathan Ross the other night to find Gwyneth Paltrow, and subsequently ran screaming. Ugh.

Tribal Mind wonders: What was it tat caused you to scream?

  • by Bereft Skerrick on June 17, 2009 at 05:09 PM

Spooks was packed with punches and I reckon Richard Armitage is more at home here than Robin Hood. Nothing tops North & South though.
Shaun Micallef was great as per usual on TBYG, got so many 'facts' now. I'm disappointed he won't be in TGYH anytime soon, but thank god for Josh Lawson. Should not have been eating whilst he was on. Top episode tonight.

  • by Kym on June 17, 2009 at 10:14 PM

Re 'MasterChef', last night was quite good as usual. Will be interesting to see how they go against TGYH (which is looking quite ordinary from the bits I've seen). Po needs to go. She's a big sooky sook.
TGYH appeared to have a segment last night which was staged rather than improvised. NTTAWWT but isn't improvisation it's purpose in life (I was going to attempt something French there but thought better of it)?
S&S good as usual but Ian Hewitson cancelled out Jeaneane Garofalo (why can't she just spell it 'Jeneen' or 'Janine' or 'Jernene' or Jennean'?).
Nothing on tonight.....
I would like to NOT offer my congrats to Rove and Tasma on their marriage. Because I don't care.
I quite like the IDEA of 'Rove' (the show) and I think they've made an effort this year to de-hey-hey-its-saturday-ify it. It's not very often entertaining though.

  • by darren on June 18, 2009 at 06:01 AM

Sorry TM to double-comment but just.... Bereft Skerrick, I'm gonna ignore your mentioning the unmentionable (because I mentioned it also... it's not so much that I can't say it but that if we don't say it, it will never happen again), but since you said 'Don Lane' a prediction: Channel Nine will get Don Lane's son to do a variety show in the near future. Had him as the Logie-handing-out-guy this year and did a story on him in ACA recently. They think they're onto something. Like they often do.
And another thing, Channel Ten's ascendancy is getting scary. I saw a promo for the new series of 'Rush' last night which I've never watched but the promo was ace. Ace I say! Someone over there is making things look good.

  • by darren on June 18, 2009 at 08:44 AM

Does anyone know why Prison Break was shunted back a further 1/2 hour without announcement? I checked yourtv late Wed arvo and it still said 11pm. Now it says 11.30pm after the fact... so missing 1/2 hour on the PVR.

  • by arthur on June 18, 2009 at 09:09 AM

Nearly 1.9M for Masterchef. Seems advertised conflict = ratings. The Big Brothery tilt seemed to work.
Why did I run screaming from Jonathan Ross combined with Gwyneth Paltrow? I would have thought that was self explanatory. JR is a bad bad man for being mean to Manuel + Gwyneth rates just above Isabel Lucas in my Must Miss list of interviews.
Torchwood on ABC2 starts tomorrow night @ 8:30pm. Yay!

  • by Bereft Skerrick on June 18, 2009 at 09:49 AM

I think the most satisfying thing about a winning Ch10 is that there's a good chance that Ch9 might end up coming third this week. Mwah hah hah hah! (evil laugh) Maybe Ch10 should do more to make sure Ch9 stays in third position permanently.

  • by Bloke from the Sticks on June 18, 2009 at 12:45 PM

Thanks gang for the goss re Isabel Whatever. Sometimes I feel a bit left out of the loop (sigh) because I don't watch Home and Away, Neighbours, etc, etc, gag, gag. Oh well, I'm over it.
I don't hate Rove, he's probably a nice kid - but I think he was much funnier when he appeared on the old, proper GNW when it was on auntie last century.
Speaking of Don Lane's son, I read that titillating piece of goss somewhere as well, dazza - do you think they will get Matthew Newton as his sidekick? That creaking sound is the noise of my fingers and toes crossing...there is nothing like watching something crash and burn.
Drat, so Torchwood will conflict with Silent Witness. Being the shallow person that I am, it will come down to Tom Ward v's Jack Surname or Burn Gordon.
ok, PJ453, you can keep your tongue...in your cheek.

  • by Shoopie on June 18, 2009 at 01:33 PM

You don't need to watch, Shoopie, to know about home-and-away-neighbours-out-of-the-blue-bold-and-the-beautiful, just sit on the couch and all that enters the DNA like swine flu into healthy cells. Divides divides divides divides......
Re Don Lane's son and the offspring of the bobbing balloon, I did think I was coming up with a self-thought scoop there but now you mention it, I prolly read it somewhere too. Either that, or the machinations of the Channel Nine programing brain-storming sessions (and I use the term loosely) can be guessed by five-years-olds having sleepy time at pre-school and lab animals. And me.
I just can't shake the feeling there's someone at Nine thinking they've done a great job and had an original idea when it's really one from 1967.....

Have been a bit quiet this week so far. But PJ453 bit concerned on your comment re Adam & Spooks - now I know Spooks characters do not always die even when it looks like they did - Ros, Harry, Tom etc but I have to say I really think Adam is goneski - very unlikely to rise from the dead - that said cracking series and looking forward to next week.
On different topic loved Josh Lawson on Thank God last night -hilarious. And Spicks and Specks great as always.
But whilst watching Thank God was shocked nay frightened to see promo for new show Double Take - harks back to 80s impressions on Fast Forward or Full Frontal - don't think it is one I am looking forward to.

And I must ad my tee hee hee to Nein- still the two, soon to be the three - well deserved you worked so hard with us (your former viewers) to achieve this status

  • by Cathy on June 18, 2009 at 03:39 PM

Cathy - oh dear god, I just saw the ad for Double Take too!! I'm scared! This looks like it's on the standard of Monster House - I think comparing it to Full Frontal is actually to big a compliment! Dear god, what were they thinking?!?!

Must say, ABC2 has some great stuff coming up! I'm teaching year 11 extension English, and we are starting a Gothic course for the next 12 weeks - Being Human starts tomorrow night, which will be perfect! Plus, Beautiful people starts tonight, which, as a teen/young adult in the 90s I'm really looking forward to. I've got my timer ready for so many programs!!! Loving ABC2 - the age website is covering so many of their programs, so i'm thankful to their tv writer for making us aware of these programs.

Beautiful People (no not you lot!!) will be my nomination for best show of 2009. I know, how can I make such a grandeous statement after just one half hour......but it is just THAT GOOD. Everything about it is fantastic. SMH's The Guide gave it the "show of the week" & they were spot on.
Beckala - Agree with your ABC2 thoughts, our ABC is definitely endeavouring to have it as a stand on it's own two feet station. Yes it does a lot of repeating of ABC1 shows but it's now adding strong shows as well.
Shoopie - I think it's time you moved on from Silent Witness & stick with Torchwood.....as a fully certified card carrying male, Jack's got to be better eye candy than Tom?
Cathy - re Adam & Spooks, you could be right & we lose him, but as he jumped from the car, I did see a strong blade of grass that could of shielded him from a fiery death.

  • by PJ453 on June 19, 2009 at 06:28 AM

Choosing Torchwood over Silent Witness? Does. Not. Compute.

ONE HD is apparently arriving on the South Coast at 7pm on 2nd July. What shall I cook? What shall I wear?

  • by Bereft Skerrick on June 19, 2009 at 09:56 AM

Question Time:
Has that bloody Izzie died yet? Why hasn't she died yet?
Why is 'Hot Seat' still on TV? (I think I know the answer to that one - it's all they've got).
If ABC3 is only showing between 6am and 9pm (as you would expect of a kiddie's channel) what happens the rest of the time? Test Pattern?
When is 'Grand Designs' coming back? They advertised it for June but there's been nothing. Nada. Zip. Zero.
I think that's all for now.....
Bereft Skerrick, just write 'HD' in texta on an old t-shirt you've been wearing for years and then try to convince everyone you meet that it's new and interesting.
Having said that, let me say this: looks like it's time to go get a set-top box because me old tellie won't blow up and there's stuff to be watched on ABC2 by the sounds of things. A Vampire Movie on tonight while Seven is showing 'Kate and Leoplod'. Again again. Ever get the feeling that Seven programmes exclusively for Hillsong devotees?

Tribal Mind replies: Tomorrow's column (which I'll put up this afternoon as a sneak preview for the regulars) introduces The Melanoma Moment as a new synonym for shark-jumping.

Darren, Grand Designs returns next Tuesday, June 23rd, at 8.30pm (Yes 8.30pm). Full details:

darren: I have evidence to support your theory about Ch 7 programming exclusively for Hillsong devotees. They show the motor racing. If you've ever seen the carpark at Hillsong on a Sunday eve around 5:30pm you'd understand. Dodgems if ever I saw it. High speed tussles for parking.

BTW apart from DIE IZZIE DIE *spoiler* her partner in craptacular, George, may go before her. This would not be new news to anyone who keeps up with unstatisfied Grey's cast member gossip, but I thought tht La Heigl and her "ooooh I'm now a movie star this TV drama is SOOOOOO beneath me" attitude would go first.

Now off to present a Very Hungry Caterpillar cake to a bunch of 4 & 5 year olds.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on June 19, 2009 at 01:10 PM

darren - The wonderful Kevin & his Grand Designs is back as of next Tues 23rd at 8:30pm ......but it's only on ABC2. Oh no, that's right you don't have a set-top box. Leave it with me & I'll put a call into my mate Mark Scott so it will be on ABC1 at the same time. Consider it done.
And putting "vampires" & "Hillsong" into the one paragraph, sir I salute you.
Bereft - Wear something "sporty" & you'll really fit in.

  • by PJ453 on June 19, 2009 at 01:33 PM

Vampires and Hillsong. Strawberries and Cream. Kathering Heigel and B grade rom coms. Love and Marriage, Horse and Carriage. Nothing out of place......

  • by darren on June 19, 2009 at 02:30 PM

PJ453, At 8.30pm on Tuesday night on ABC2 you will be watching Teachers not Grand Designs just in case you try it. It will be interesting to see what Grand Designs rates at the later time.

  • by Gary on June 19, 2009 at 03:02 PM

Gary - Thanks for that, I was only trying to wind darren up a tad..ha..ha

  • by PJ453 on June 19, 2009 at 03:28 PM

Well, you could be right, PJ453, I don't what Tom is thinking with that haircut !
"Kate and Leoplod" - clever typo dazza.

I did try to watch "Kate & Leoplod" (hee) but Meg Ryan looks awfully scary these days, plus I've developed this habit of looking up the synopsis of a movie I'm unsure about on Wikipedia. When I read how much historial inaccuracy they had in the movie (sure I know it's a RomCom) I decided that sleep was a better idea.

Another strong night for ABC 1 & 2. From 1 - Stateline, Collectors, Sient Witness (for those who decide not to move on) & repeats of The Hollowmen, which the more I watch it the closer it seems to be as to what actually happens in the Big House. From 2 - Torchwood (yes it's a repeat, but it will be worth watching all the way through), Being Human another new very stong English show with vampires (sans Hillsong), werewolf & a ghost....brilliant. Best line of the show was from a nasty vampire (is there any other type??) looking at patient's hospital chart "A-positive, a bit Jacob's Creek for me" Our 8 cents a day is becoming real value for money!

Re the comment on that new Seven sketch show 'Double Take', thought the promo they aired during 'Greys Anatomy' was only ok, but the one during 'Thank God' was great (Kerry Armstrong promoting the health virtues of landmines). Can't believe it's taken til now for someone to have a go at her for those appalling Coke ads (who knew it was a health food drink?). Anyway, thought that particular promo was v. funny, and wil be watching

  • by JM on June 20, 2009 at 02:01 PM

Mr Dale, URST does sound like a medical condition.
I, too, was very happy watching "Beautiful People" and "Being Human". Both were wonderful TV shows, and I'll be back next week. (And hopefully early, because all the clocks are obviously running slow in this house and I missed the opening minutes of both shows. Either that, or I'm just too used to tuning in late because the commercial channels are always late.)
And I'll be watching "Grand Designs" this week (hurrah!). I don't think there'll be any need to change the channel away from ABC1/ABC for the next few weeks!

  • by tqd on June 20, 2009 at 06:26 PM

'Kate and Leoplod' was a genuine mistake but somehow more appropriate than spelling it correctly. Nice when things work like that. 'Kathering Heigel' is an example of when it doesn't.

  • by darren on June 22, 2009 at 05:56 AM

darren: I would suggest that Craptherine Haggle is more apt.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on June 22, 2009 at 06:57 AM

I am most satisfied to see Ch9 end up coming third this week. Woo Hoo! (jumping for joy) Keep it up Ch7 & Ch10.

  • by Bloke from the Sticks on June 22, 2009 at 09:29 AM

Gee, Darren, don't admit that your "mistake" was a real mistake - here I was thinking you were brilliant!
What's the verdict on Ms Marple last night? A times I thought I was watching a comedy - still loved it though.

  • by Shoopie on June 22, 2009 at 02:59 PM

Whats the new idea of just producing cheap chat shows like "Talkin about your generation",without offering prizes to the audience. This reminds me of primary school days of charades.Micallef is the worst comedian presenter to grace our screens. I hate this cheap, moronic show.I wish channel 10 would axe it soon,as i grow weary of Rove and now Micallef.

Tribal Mind replies: And if Ten grants your wish, will you promise to watch whatever is put in place of T''BYG?
