Are you happy? To learn how Australians answered that question, go to Who We Are.
by David Dale
This comes as a shock. It seems people are actually missing Big Brother, the pioneering-but-ultimately-geriatric "reality" show put out of its misery last year by Channel Ten. Two readers claimed to be in that sad condition when this column sought nominations for the 2009 Bogie Awards - the hall of shame for television's most annoying, embarrassing and underrated programs and personalities.
In the category "Most Missed", many readers nominated "anything by The Chaser boys", a few readers nominated The Glasshouse, and two eccentrics admitted they'd been reflecting fondly on the days when Big Brother gave them something to bitch about.
That kind of response is why The Bogies are the highlight of this column's year. Now the nominations are in, and you have the opportunity to vent your rage against the networks. The results will be announced in this column on May 2 -- coincidentally the very weekend when some other TV awards with a similar name will also be announced.

I would like to see a category for "Concept in decline" aka A show which was once interesting but has "done itself to death" through it's own hand.. examples Spicks and Specks over the 6-12 months the 4 guests tend to picked from a pool of half a dozen B listers .. Hamish Lee, Meshel Laurie etc etc and very few "outsiders" aka visiting international personalities or people from outside of the B List set. Good News Week suffers from the same ailment although Adam Hills still has something to offer unlike Paul McDermott.
Although it is similar in some way to Jumping the shark or flashing the breast, I tend to think that those two terms relate more to drama/comedy/storyline shows rather than ad lib/comment/quiz shows.
In line with this sentiment I would also like to see a category for shows which effectively keep B and C listers on our TV screens aka Shows which are either contests involving B/C listers commenting on something of little note or competing in a wacky zany quiz/game show usually for a charity but mainly to boost/maintain/achieve public profile.
examples 20-1, DWTS, Singing Bee (I think), Hole in the wall, Australia's brainiest z lister and almost anything featuring D. Koch .

One category I think should be there. Is biggest fall by a TV station.
One presenter who must be in the most annoying category would have to be BEN DARK. How this guy is not already on there i don't know. In a country which has some really annoying people on tv. BEN DARK actually makes me turn a tv off. To hear that voice over and over again. Ben Dark in the amazon. I really don't know how a camera crew can go on tour with the guy. Surely they must get extra money. Imagine hearing that voice on a 24 plane trip.

Can we have a really big award for The Most Insult to Viewers please.
The award goes to American TV producers who think we are so dumb we need "canned laughter" to tell us what is funny.
Heres a hint:-
If we need the "canned laughter" it is probably not funny.
Two and 1/2 Men would not have lasted 1 series without it. Watch a MASH episode without "canned laughter" and you'll see how good, quirky and timeless real comedy is.
Is there some way we can get this ridiculous, insulting insert of "canned laughter" stopped.
Have I mentioned THANK GOD FOR DOWNLOADS.
And the runner up award (as mentioned by Joe) are the commercial stations who run ALL their shows overtime. Do you really think that will stop me from turning the channel to watch the beginning of another show starting on another channel?
Think again.
That's what VCRs were invented for... press record, then during the current show's ads watch the end of the previous channel show.
Perhaps we could put "canned laughter" on every show Kyle Sandiland was ever involved with. God I need a drink for that thought.

Tonight is the episode of 30 Rock on which I based my vote for 'Best Use of Breasts'. They are not bared but Liz's breasts are put to good use (or at least Jack thinks so). Oh to have a friend prepared to do go to those lengths to prevent your humiliation. Selma Hayek adds to the effective use of breasts over the next month.
(I have already had my say on these earlier and as I cannot find the original page to cut and paste in my noms as votes.)
One final "too late but has to be said" nomination:
Worst attempt at an accent from a country not your own: The actor (very loose use of the term) who played W.C. Wentworth in Rogue Nation. I think he was doing the accent of not another country but another planet. Another planet where they have to talk very slowly so they can remember what they are supposed to be saying and how they are supposed to sound whilst saying it. Add in the inappropriate age of the actor for the role and it is one of the stranger pieces of casting I have seen in some time.

Oh Deadwood, where are you? Shall your plot lines be forever unresolved? If we're allowed to put external links in here (can't remember the rules) try this:
http://therecapper.blogspot.com/2009/02/open-letter-to-producers-of-deadwood.html
I'd say it's funny but since I wrote it I shouldn't self-promote. I know some Deadwood fans have wrong me in appreciation.
Tribal Mind asks: Are there rules? And your last line seems to have become garbled. "have wrong me in anticipation" doesn't sound right. Care to correct?
And while I'm asking questions, does any reader know what accent Melissa George is supposed to be doing? Sometimes she sounds Australo-American, sometimes Anglo-American, sometimes southern.
Are there rules? I think I spend too much time on the ABC TV Forum...man are there rules there...
Wrong should be rung...serves me right for working, studying and reading blogs at the same time...
Okay, this is from both me and Mr TQD because he watches far more crap on tv than I do so had far more opinions about all our celebrities. (Whereas, the phrase "who on earth is that?" got overworked by me when I was reading him the nominations from the dead tree edition on Saturday.)

Groucho - I have to agree. Micallef is as funny as a pile of last week's prawn shells. I tried to watch Newstopia once, to see why all the pseudo-intelligentsia were raving about it. Undergraduate humour doesn't describe it, it was more like something 9 year old boys come up with in their less intelligent moments. It was pure, undiluted rubbish, so bad it made that other piece of crap The Chaser look almost mildly amusing.
