The Who We Are update: Week 8

To nominate people or programs for this year's Bogie awards, go to The Tribal Mind.
To find out who Australians like the best, go to Who We Are.

The ratings race, updated 8am Monday
It's got to be a bad omen for Channel Nine. In a week when it had the top program, with record ratings, it was nevertheless beaten by Channel Seven. The average prime time audience shares went like this: Seven 29.2 per cent; Nine 27.5; Ten 21.5; ABC 16.2; SBS 5.4. Nine just can't get past Seven's Tuesday punch.

Pay TV gave this account of itself for the week: "Subscription TV was the number one source of TV viewing across Australia in week 8 of 2009. STV channels accounted for 23.7% of all metropolitan viewing between 6am and midnight, was 22.1% of all regional viewing and 60.1% of all viewing in subscription TV homes, more than any other network in all of those markets. In live sport this week, Live: Rugby Union: S14 Waratahs v Chiefs on FOX Sports drew 167,000 viewers, Live: AFL: NAB Cup Hawthorn v Melbourne was watched by 142,000 people and the preliminary final of the A-League competition, Live: Football: A-League PF Adel v Qld, was seen by 124,000 subscribers. In entertainment programming, Family Guy on FOX8 was watched by 153,000 people and NCIS on TV1 was watched by 135,000 people. In addition, the premiere of the Will Smith movie I Am Legend on Movie One drew 128,000 people, and 106,000 people watched Hannah Montana on Disney Channel."

Wow, what a turnaround. After last night, Channel Seven is ahead for the week. Despite huge numbers for cricket on Sunday and Underbelly on Monday, Nine is now averaging 28.8 per cent of the prime time audience, while Seven holds 30.0 per cent (Ten 21.7, ABC 14.4, SBS 5.1).

Nine's Ladette to Lady fell away badly on its second night, and A Current Affair and The Mentalist are well down on last year's performance. Tonight Bert Newton has the burden of saving Nine's bacon with Adults Only 20 To 1, but we somehow suspect that won't be enough. The solution might be for Underbelly's female stars to start presenting Nine's news and ACA -- get the night off to an invigorating start.

The ratings race, updated 10 am Wednesday
Packed To The Rafters has lost 300,000 viewers since last year, and has slipped behind Underbelly to become Australia's second favourite drama. The gorgeous Rafter women must start thinking about making the sacrifice of modesty that has been made so successfully by the women of U2. As a ratings booster, that would be preferable to introducing regular murders into the extended family household. Go to Comments to tell us how you think the Rafters could win the viewers back.

Channel Seven won last night, but Nine is too far ahead from Sunday and Monday to lose the week. The shares of prime time audience so far are Nine 30.1 per cent, Seven 28.9, Ten 22.1, ABC 13.7, SBS 5.2.

The ratings race, updated 11 am Monday
Will this wretched cricket never end? Last night it blocked the relaunch of Channel Nine's Sunday staples 60 Minutes and CSI, thus preventing popular culture scholars such as this column's readers from getting a sense of how the weekly pattern of the ratings year will develop.

Not that Nine is complaining. The cricket let it win Sunday, with 31.9 per cent of the prime time audience (Seven 28.1, Ten 24.0, ABC 11.6, SBS 4.5). Next Sunday we start real programming, and viewers will chose between Australian murders and American murders.

COMMENTS

I agree, TM. Please let cricket season be over. I hate the boring stuff! I went looking for 60 mins last night , found it wasn't on, so switched to SYTYCD. Which was entertaining till 8.30 then watched City Homicide. I quite like it, a good Aussie drama. I am pretty over CSI:(insert city here) and can't be bothered watching anymore.
Monday's a good viewing night with lots to offer. Pity every night isn't like it.

  • by em on February 16, 2009 at 11:12 AM

Why does there seem to be cricket on nearly every day? I caught the repeat of U2 yesterday, and thought eh. I'll watch it again, but it won't be a must see. Cranford was still good, but surprisingly depressing. I wonder when the next period drama is coming along.

  • by Kym on February 16, 2009 at 11:17 AM

One week in and I'm already looking for books to read, veins to hack.
SYTYCD was garbage last night. Nat Bass is better than last year (someone's been taking 'how to be human' lessons over summer) but everything else stank.
The US version is so slick it hurts. The Aus version is like talent night at Rooty Hill RSL.
Jason Coleman is an arse.
Bonny Lithgoe is just plain bizarre.
Matt has his hat on too tight.
Horrible people pretending to be almost nice about crappy dancers who think they're better than they are and deserve love and admiration just because they got on the telly. Rotten.

  • by darren on February 16, 2009 at 11:31 AM

Thankfully, none of the gossiping spinsters in Cranford seem to have discovered cricket. Yay for ABC and the bonnet dramas!

  • by tqd on February 16, 2009 at 12:35 PM

i know!! im so sick of cricket!!
did anyone else love dance last night?? there were some awesome dances for the 1st night! i was so impressed!

  • by ryan on February 16, 2009 at 03:05 PM

I missed the SYTYCdance festivities last night (Mr Beckala is celebrating his 30th, so had family commitments) - have recorded, so can't comment. Did see the last few - the girl with the two tone hair was AWFUL, WOEFUL, TERRIBLE. She annoyed me from the audition anyway, so I'm hoping she'll go.
I too am so so so so so sick of the cricket - was driving home last night, Triple M had cricket commentary! Is there no escape?!?! I was really interested in how the 60 minutes, Sunday Night, reality tv hoopla was going to pan out - guess we'll have to wait!

  • by Beckala on February 16, 2009 at 04:48 PM

Popular culture scholars already know that if Australia has any chance of winning a sporting fixture, millions of people will watch it. The cricket season has ended in Australis, so only pay tv viewers will be seeing the cricket in the next few months. I totally agree with Darren about SYTYCD. Perhaps the really good dancers are already working, or too afraid that the show will affect their credibility.

  • by rufus on February 16, 2009 at 07:40 PM

Now that Cricket is over we might have a better idea of what Sundays will be like from next week. After the bagging she copped last year, I have to say that Natalie Bassingthwaighte is a lot more confident with her hosting role on So You Think You Can Dance this year. She's engaging a lot more with the contestants and judges and we're seeing a bit more banter too. I saw a little snippet in Stay in Touch yesterday about the Oscars. Is Ch 9 showing them live this year and out of primetime?

Tribal Mind replies: Yes and yes -- next Monday.

  • by J Bar on February 17, 2009 at 08:08 AM

Nine are really pushing Aussie Laddette to Lady this week. They have 2 'encores' of the first ep on Wednesday and Sunday nights.

  • by merciless on February 17, 2009 at 09:00 AM

Mon - Top Gear almost got serious with Capt Slow testing the hydrogen Honda. Loved the 50 years of Touring Cars in Britain segment. Another viewing of Depos & B&S for Mrs PJ. Couldn't agree more with Ruth Ritchie in the SMH on Sat saying Brothers & Sisters "should get some friends". Recorded U2 & was wondering what Ch9 was doing.......recorded on digital Ch9 & then would change the tv during the ads on Ch70 HD to the CH90 HD channel, ready to stop the recording as I didn't want the Ladetts to Lady (?) show but Hotel Babylon was on. Checked the SMH Guide & HB was to on after the L2L show on the 9HD channel....so beats me what Ch9 are doing.
Sun - Enjoyed Cranford, but it's certainly not all laughs, thought Gambon could have been given a bit more screen time, maybe he'll come back as a ghost. Then watched the end of the cricket... what joy a "bonnet drama" & cricket on the same night !!!!

  • by PJ453 on February 17, 2009 at 09:04 AM

Wow, some huge numbers for Monday! TM, is it that there are more people watching on a Monday night? I'm just thinking, there are a good 13 (possibly more) shows with over a million viewers, that seems to be more than usual. Wasn't a big fan of Top Gear last night, but that's because I'm a girl, and it was focusing on actual car information - but i'm really looking forward to next week in Vietnam. Recorded the Channel 7 8:30-10:30 to watch U2 - good lord, the gratuitious nudity was getting a work out and a half! Then it continued with the Ladettes - could only sit through the first few minutes before abandoning it to watch previously recorded stuff. Good god, where do they find these people? Urinating on camera, for crying out loud! Found myself tut tutting like a nanna

  • by Beckala on February 17, 2009 at 09:54 AM

TM - Do you have the numbers for Boston Legal and Ten Late News with Sports Tonight? Want to see if Nine's dominance extended past 10.30 (CIA got 545K)

Tribal Mind replies: In the chart now. What do they reveal?

  • by Jason on February 17, 2009 at 10:39 AM

Were Bic disposable razors around so Miss Boob could shave her pegs in the bath during the time of last nights U2 ep? Don't think so. And I conclude that her left breast had more talent opportunities than her right did... tit for tat.

Tribal Mind replies: I will not hear a word against her. The best thing to come out of New Zealand since the pavlova.

  • by David @ Green Point on February 17, 2009 at 01:39 PM

Hey DD
Longtime reader, first time poster...
How did "How I Met Your Mother" and "GNW" go?
Really think Underbelly was more "A tail with two titties" - way into the gratuitous..
Sean

Tribal Mind replies: In the chart now. Why do you care about HIMYM?

  • by sean on February 17, 2009 at 03:23 PM

Is it crime that pays or plenty of nudity? I was switching channels and everytime I switched to U2 there was always some boob or buttocks dangling somewhere. Brilliant comment David @ Green point, couldn't agree more! I didn't really watch SYTYCD last year, but judging from these comments, I just cannot imagine how annoying Nat Bass was last year.
Meanwhile, if Ladette to Lady is a success for Ch 9, why air it twice a week? Seems to really want to get rid of it. I think the Aus Ladettes are lacking some of the bite the originals had, which really shows how crass they were.

  • by Kym on February 17, 2009 at 03:46 PM

re "David @ Green Point: I conclude that her left breast had more talent opportunities than her right did... tit for tat".
Underbelly 2: A Tale of Two Titties.

  • by merciless on February 17, 2009 at 03:57 PM

Channel surfing last night because Dave Hughes was being featured on Good News Week (how did it rate compared to 761K last week, considering McDermott was making many snarky references about NewtonJr's bum), I did happen to catch a minute of U2. As my brothers liked to say when they were Wee Skerricks - bums and boobies. Would the story last 1/3 the episodes without the gratuitous bums and boobies?
Back to Good News Week - ahhh Micallef, how do I adore thee (and your small packets of desiccant, let me count the ways). Yeah, you had to watch to understand, and I'm guessing not many did.
Dexter was up from 471K. I prefer mass murderers over bogans any day.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on February 17, 2009 at 04:05 PM

Hey DD -
Not really a fan of HIMYM as much as wanting to see how far in front 9 are in that 7.30 slot... though I am a big fan of Neil Patrick Harris (doogie) since Dr Horrible...
Thanks!
Sean

  • by sean on February 17, 2009 at 04:53 PM

A couple of observations about Underbelly.
For me, U1 was all about the strength of the characters and through them, the violence and mayhem they imposed on Melbourne.
U2, for me, doesn't have the same strength of characters. The story line is not as tight or compelling, especially when trying to tell a complex story. IMHO Blue Murder did a far better job in outlining the complexity of corruption that was NSW Inc.
As for the sex scenes. We should all partake in the mood that the producers intended and skull a drink for each titty we see. There wouldn't be a sober house in the country. To me the sex scenes add nothing to the storyline. I couldn't help but sing "am I ever going to see your (tits) again as the Angles closed the show.
Finally, the sound mixers should be shot. Far too often the background noise levels are on par with the dialogs levels. This all makes it hard to hear what little constructive dialog it contains.
Still, it is nice to see Aussie drama. Just don't treat us all like mindless sex fiends!

  • by Neil on February 17, 2009 at 08:31 PM

Just to make conversation, because I don't seem to watch TV anymore, can anyone explain the reason why DVDs of 'The Sopranos' were $36 each two weeks ago and are now $75 each? I thought it very strange. Luckily I only have the last series of 9 episodes to go. Is it something to do with the price of acetate in Singapore or just because they can?
And by the way re 'Underbelly', no-one's done this yet:(o)(o).

  • by darren on February 18, 2009 at 06:01 AM

darren, sometimes dvd prices just fluctuate like that. I got season 9 of The Simpsons for $29. A week after I ordered it, the price went up to $65. You've just got to wait for the specials, they do it every few months.

  • by Beckala on February 18, 2009 at 06:40 AM

The wacky world of television - 18 months ago had we woken up we would have seen LISA WILKINSON on SEVEN, SHARON GIDELLA ON NINE, JESSISA ROWE ON NINE AND MIKE MUNRO ON NINE.
Fast forward 18 months and we have LISA WILKINSON ON NINE, SHARYN GIDELLA ON SEVEN, JESSICA ROWE ON SEVEN AND MIKE MUNRO ON SEVEN...
Is it just me or are we all being duped -ROWE AND MUNRO both got massive payouts from NINE and claim to be loyal to SEVEN - SEVEN is now run by virtually every one who used to work at NINE so why not bring em on board. Everyone seems to be getting something out of this except the viewer!

  • by GJ on February 18, 2009 at 09:05 AM

Shocking night for nein, apart from Secret Diary of course...
Was surprised by the magnitude of Ladette's fall in one day (nearly 40% of the Monday audience), even though it's utter crap.

  • by arthur on February 18, 2009 at 09:23 AM

So Ch9 owns Monday, Ch7 owns Tuesday, me thinks all stations will share Wednesday
I've even heard the reference of the "Tale of 2 Titties" on radio yesterday, it seems the consensous is that the sex is holding the show together. Could be a chance for lingerie manufactors to "sponser" the show. And Darren from what I've seen from ep1 they are a lot bigger than 2 fried eggs!! Wanting to keep abreast of the news....yeah I know it was a poor pun, watched Sir David Frost on Foreign Correspondent last night, he's in his 70's & still has a weekly interview show, it seems our Kevin has refused an interview 4 times. He talked about the Nixon interviews & we saw parts of the real interviews not the movie....fascinating tv.

  • by PJ453 on February 18, 2009 at 09:31 AM

Re: the price of DVD's. Unless it is an all time favourite I wouldn't buy a DVD box set. I know of people who just hire them and burn copies of them (using the free DVDshrink and then Nero), real easy and much cheaper. Have done that with 24, House, Northern Exposure and Sopranos. These shows are so much better without ads in them and watching 2 or 3 episodes together. PS: I don't download as my satellite broadband is too slow, good old telstra won't upgrade the exchange.

  • by Ned on February 18, 2009 at 10:25 AM

That's about the same results Rafters get every week, so I doubt that if we see titties and arses added the ratings would increase. Or would it? Else, (and this has almost got to be foolproof) just place a charismatic British actor in it. I don't think it's steered Lie to Me, House or Life wrong. They're the main reasons why the shows are more so watchable.

  • by Kym on February 18, 2009 at 10:30 AM

So I'm guessing that viewers would rather see toothy Billie Piper and her (o)(o)'s than just plain old less toothy Billie Piper. Even though during Season 2 she was preggers in real life and they're not her (o)(o)'s. They're stunt (o)(o)'s.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on February 18, 2009 at 11:23 AM

How to improve ratings for 'Packed to the Rafters':
Julie: Dad, Dave, there's a bushfire coming!
Ted: Stone the crows!
Dave: What are we going to do? By the way did you know my old man's Jack Thomson?
Julie: I don't know what to do! What we really need is someone who knows everything. Oh thank goodness here's Kochie!
Kochie: G'day g'day. How's everyone goin'? G'day Jules. G'day Davo. G'day Teddles. I think what we all need is Kochie's joke of the day. What do you get when you cross a kangaroo with a wombat? Eh? Eh?
Ted: Struth.
Julie: I think I need an Advil. They now come in easy-swallow gel-coated tabsule form (presses index finger to temple and frowns) ...for when you need fast relief.
Dave: Look, who's that comin' up the hill?....Bloody hell, it's Mel!
(Mel Doyle stumbles in blackened and naked and (easily) covering her modesty while a hand-held camera shot lingers laciviously over her stunt bum and a close-up of an apron with plastic titties).
Mel: The bush fire burnt off all my clothes, teeheehee.
Kochie: A Wombaroo! Ha ha ha. How about another one.....
Dave: Where's my gun?
Mel: The Cash Cow! Somebody save the Cash Cow! She's still out there somewhere! (starts blubbering).
Kochie: I'll go. Because I'm wearing an Akubra and RM Williams. Look, they've got a nifty little zip in the sides.....
Mel: Ooooh I love those.
Kochie: Yeah I thought they were pretty nice. Do they make my ankles look fat?
Julie: (yelling) DAVE! It's in the cupboard in the shed. In the cupboard!

  • by darren on February 18, 2009 at 11:26 AM

To Darren et al, DVD prices are all over the place depending on shop, specials etc etc. Example, I picked up the 1st season of 30 Rock the other day for $19.95 at Big W. Last time I looked for it could only find it at JB and they wanted double that. So you have to shop around, Darren. I know males hate doing that but it's the only way to go. Anyway, I am basically a cheapskate and will only buy DVDs on sale. I hate paying full price for anything!!

  • by em on February 18, 2009 at 11:33 AM

David, I think you might be a bit premature. Ch 7 will win tonight and make pretty. Personally I think the week will be decided on Saturday.

  • by Michael on February 18, 2009 at 02:23 PM

Kym, you asked if Ladette to Lady was a hit why are they showing 2 episodes a week. Well, that is just how 9 works, got a good show, flog it to death, remember Ramsay, Two and half men, 20 to 1 in various editions.

  • by Louise on February 18, 2009 at 02:25 PM

How to improve ratings for 'Packed to the Rafters':
1/ The family form a cricket team & put on a celebrity match for a good cause. (I know a lot of you don't like cricket but this is to take away the Ch9 viewers + it rates!!
2/ The family could enter a dance contest, this will take away from Ch10 viewers. The episode could be called "PTTRSYTYCDA"
3/ On each alternate night the show is replayed as a animation show, this should take away all the Ch10 The Simpson viewers.
4/ Yes Darren....get rid of Kochie.....harsh I know but even Ch7 viewers would be drawn to it! But I think it would have to happen over 2 nights, with a "will Kochie survive" preview at the end of night 1. This of course could then be rehashed as "news" on Today Tonight over the week.
See it's not that hard....haha
A question I keep meaning to ask but always seem to forget re the Time Team show on ABC Tues 6:05. Why is it that they only have 3 days to dig each site ??? Last night Tony Robinson said on numerous occasions "this is the greatest find of such & such in 150 years" If that's the case & the dig is that great a discovery why don't they just keep digging ???

  • by PJ453 on February 18, 2009 at 04:07 PM

With the Nork Network trying to become TV Tittie-land, the overwrought buffoons in charge have obviously heeded to the words of the Bard...
"To (o)(o) or not (.)(.)..."
Anyone willing to predict how many boobs will be focused on in Ep 4??? I start the book with "6"... and my mistake - crook DID say "Robert", not "Roy" as I thought I heard last week.

  • by David @ Green Point on February 18, 2009 at 04:13 PM

Right, just finished an exhaustive writers meeting re "how to improve ratings for "Packed to the Rafters". So picture this.....
A "colourful racing identity" / "bikie gang member / "trug trafficer" dies what seems a horrible death on the front lawn of the PTTR's house. Everybody assumes he was shot/garroted/stabbed but no, there are no obvious signs........cue the medical doctor in a full contamination suit, it seems that he has died of an unknown rash & he died because he had clothes on!! All the cast members now have to continue the show NAKED (so they don't die the horrible death) until the docs can find a cure. The episode can be called "dead dead, titty titty, bum bum" & should have lots of Benny Hill music.
Discuss....

  • by PJ453 on February 18, 2009 at 08:28 PM

Just relocate Packed To the Rafters to the Bangalee Nudist Caravan Park near Tocumwal or the River Valley Nudist Resort near Echuca. Everything (including the ratings) will rise... (a shame both camps have concluded...)
Thoroughly enjoyed Crims of Oz from 7. Great background to the Donald MacKay/Griffith 1977 stuff. And only four guys buff-naked, as opposed to the Nork Network's claim on "Titty-Bum-Titty-Bum-Titty-Bum-Bum-Bum"...

the problem with pttr is it has already used up so many storylines, its now boring. they did jump back up from last week though

PJ453, you paint a compelling picture but if I may:
Everyone knows that if nudity is to featured in an Autralian series that falls in the 'much loved' category (think 'A Country Practice', 'Neighbours') it has to be done cute. Think Craig McLachlan accidently locked out of the house covering his own very large (o)(o)'s and freakishly tiny (( . Or Vicky and Simon in ACP taking their clothes off to pull a cow out of the mud. Maybe Julie can get surprised by a garden makeover show host while in the shower?
As for the 'drug-runner' storyline, how about under-the-counter Advil distribution? Julie's the king-pin.
Murders are a bit dicey. Usually they have to get at least eight weeks uncertainty out of death, perhaps utilising the convenience of a coma or maybe a boating accident and some sort of amnesia. Will they die or won't they? Everyone loves a cliff-hanger.
Okay okay, I'll give you the 'clothes causing untimely death' scenario, if I can keep my 'bushfire guest-starring Kochie (or Jack Thompson)' scenario. It's timely and manipulative and the ratings will go through the roof! Through the roof I say!
By the way, I was going to take a look at 'Guerilla Gardeners' last night but then Ten decided to make it into a news item on the 5 oclock bulletin and repeat it in their headlines several times so I didn't bother. Idiots.

Caught up with Lie to Me from the other night and I was curiously fascinated by Kellie Willilams hair. The style is very 70s (is she auditioning for Life on Mars?) and so stiff it looked like it could withstand Hurricane Katrina. Every time she moved it just sat there without one little tiny hair moving. It bugged me so much that I couldn't get into the story as I kept waiting for a gust of wind, something, to see if it moved. I know, I really must get a life.
And caught a glimpse of Guerilla Gardeners last night whilst waiting for House. What a weird concept, a bunch of gardeners sneaking in to some public space and sprucing it up. Last night they did up a bus stop area which looked like it was outside a railway station. What I wondered was how long would it last till the vandals got to it. Or is that another show, "Guerilla Vandals - we follow a group of bogan teens as they destroy the work of the Guerilla Gardeners team. Then watch the gardeners emotional journey when they see all their hard work destroyed and confront the Vandals. Tears will flow."

Hate to say I told you so David with comment (but I will). I must say I am surprised by the massive lead 7 now have. The Ch 9 schedule has too many holes in it relying on weak shows like Wipeout, Ladette etc and with the news powering 7 I think they will continue to win easily.

Tribal Mind replies: You were right, and I look forward to future advice from you.

Guerilla Gardners, taken Out, Yasmine's getting married, etc etc etc ...... do you notice a pattern yet channel ten ?
You may wish to add Master Chef Australia to my list .... I think it is heading to 'turkey territory' as well ..... you may wish to swallow your pride and cancel now before your share price nose dives even further .....

Ch 10 shot itself in the foot by moving House back to 8.30pm. After watching Spicks & Specks, turned to House and didn't realise I'd already miss half until a minute in when they were close to finding the cure. What's more annoying are those Neighbours ads "We (pic of a heart) you Harold". Beat that for most annoying show ad!

Watched House and Life last night and recorded the rest - I am finding the good dr a bit irritating this season and his minions are not half as interesting as Chase, Cameron and Foreman - that being said next week may lift the show (no spoilers given).
Caught up with the recording of Criminal Minds afterwards - much tighter, but I do worry about how many serial killers the US can grow... we all have to suspend some logic otherwise between The Mentalist, CSI (all types) Law & Order (all types) Crim Minds and whatever else there is makes the US a v v v dangerous country.
Have avoided the boobie fest on Nein (not a fan of Underbelly....but from what my fellow discerning posters are saying methinks once the boobies are covered the numbers watching will drop..
And as an aside a former Premier of NSW (Wran) has an office in the same building as my work and this morning I shared the lift with him - he was discussing an act on last night's Australia's Got Talent - the guy who swallowed the pipe - needless to say it had intrigued and freaked out Nifty!

I'm not a viewer of it, but for those who are, the declining ratings for Nine's Canadian cop show Flashpoint, indicate they'll probably dump the show to a 10.30 slot, as it's getting beaten by Seven's Gangs of Oz, that's quite an interesting show.
With respect to Ten ditching Dr. Phil at midday and replacing it with The Doctors (that's a kind of a medical consult spinoff, featuring the handsome US doctor who appeared on Phil often), not that most viewers would care less either way, but in one respect it's good because by showing Phil episodes all year round (except for the summer recess period) Ten were repeating Phil episodes and now they can show less repeats, depending on whether the spinoff takes off or not.

I read this morning that CHANNEL TEN's share price dived because advertising revenue is down and media stocks generally are really on the nose - judging by TEN'S ratings performance the news just keeps getting worse - the BIGGEST LOSER seems to have dropped right off and ratings for SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE appear disappointing as well.
I watched an awful show called TRIPLE O ZERO the other night and is it just me or do we have some macarbe obsession with watching other people's grief and misery - the other night this woman spoke about and then allowed others to re-enact her husband stabbing himself in the head with a staple gun!!! The fact that this show was on around dinner time was bad enough but the re-enactment allowed us to view every gruesome detail (including his blood splattered head in bold digital colour) - call me old fashioned but if one of my loved ones had been through a gory 'near death' experience like this and survived the last thing I would want to do is re-enact the said nightmare - I know this show is also about recognising the good work of the triple O operators but it seems the producers are using the show to shock and repulse viewers rather than educate and that's the most disturbing part of this program!
Looking forward to the return of Q and A tonight!

Those figures for Guerrilla Gardeners are disappointing. I quite enjoyed it and I hope that its figures don't cause Ten to do something drastic.
Yes, I agree that House should stay at 9pm which i evidenced by its ratings' behaviour over the last couple of weeks - but what to show between 8 and 9pm?

  • by cpandilo on February 19, 2009 at 04:28 PM

GJ, speaking of macabre obsessions with other people's grief and misery, I for one am really looking for to rolling in it on Sunday. All five free-to-air stations are showing the National Day of Mourning celebratio.....sorry, observance. I'm gonna stock up on Kleenex and take the phone off the hook. It's times like these wot make me proud to be an Aussie ...OI! OI! OI!..... ahem, got a bit carried away there. Looking forward to seeing KRudd squeeze out a few more tears. His media advisers have probably already auditioned boofy blokes willing to rest their Ranga heads on Kev's shoulder (he's the Nation's mum) and sob. Preferably guys who he doesn't have to risk muscle strain trying to force their head down (onto his shoulder). Kev can go "there there mate, let it out", then we can all have a go and then we'll be all better. Kev's said it should be "an event etched in the Nation's consciousness forever" and dammit, I'll try my best to be further traumatised. Everyone should do the same.
You don't care until everyone sees you care.

It's not surprising to hear advertising revenue at Ten is down. I have never seen so many of those late night infomercials on during prime time as i have seen on Ten. Is that really the only advertising they can get? Ped-egg, sheer cover, some great herb grower. Kinda sad really.

  • by Jed on February 20, 2009 at 09:12 AM

Jed mentioned the PED EGG commercial on TEN - yes they must be getting airtime very cheaply at the moment. I mean how, in such a dire economic climate, can a product that essentially scrapes the crap of the souls of your feet be able to afford so much air time - and they must be selling!!! - I guess even in tough economic times we all want the souls of our feet to look perfect!!!
The other ads that are getting a lot of airtime and were being plugged very heavily during the bushfire crisis were those dreadful funeral ads where they say for less than 2 dollars a week *(which they say is about the same price for a cup of coffee) you too can have funeral expenses coverage. They are badly acted and worst still badly made and just make you feel gutted that even in death you could be a burden to your family - pls some regulator out there - find them morally offensive to the average viewer and take them off air!!!...and while you're at get DAAAAANNNNNIIII Minogue off air as well - the lengths that KYLIE impersonater will go to to outstage her sister - AUSTRALIA might have talent...but it ain't you DAAAAAANNNNNIIII!

  • by GJ on February 20, 2009 at 02:10 PM

Aside from Ped egg ads (not sure what other scum scraping ads channel ten have), I counted the number of ads that channel ten had advertising their own programs during medium and Law and Order...... Up to 3 ads IN A ROW......
Channel Ten programming hacks...... there is no point in promoting biggest loser and SYTYCD to me during the well produced scripted dramas, as I am not the correct target audience for your raw sewerage reality programs .....I don't think any people watching these 2 programmers are, so you might as well carpet bomb me with more ped egg ads, as i am more likely to buy a ped egg than watch your other programs.
Thank you

Gee - I didn't realise that Sydney cops a lot of that telemarketing crap! I though it was only Prime, WIN & SCTen?

  • by Bereft Skerrick on February 21, 2009 at 09:18 AM

Hey, Tm, do you know how Medium rated last night?

Tribal Mind replies: it was number 86 program for the week, with 712,000 viewers.

  • by srdjan on February 21, 2009 at 04:00 PM

IN Sydney Seven showed the AFL on Friday night at 12.05AM on 7SD and 8.30PM on 7HD. Ten did the same on Saturday night with 11.10PM on 10SD and 7.30PM on 1HD. Would this change the ratings?

Tribal Mind replies: HD figures are combined with the main station's figures in the ratings, but since hardly anybody watches HD, it makes little difference.

em on February 19:: guerilla gardeners (not sure if they're the ones branded by Channel 10 or not) actually did something locally (put a purple pagoda up around a fairly useless concrete thinggy. Looks gorgeous. The council doesn't quite know what to do with it, so it's still up some months later. Hurrah!
Looking forward to Cranford tonight. Will record the live Oscars coverage tomorrow, and then watch it at my own time/speed and ffwding through the ads. Brilliant! (I wonder how many will watch the delayed repeat telecast? I wouldn't think many.)

  • by tqd on February 22, 2009 at 04:27 PM

Is anyone here watching "Laughing at the fatties" on channel 10? Why would anyone want to watch a bunch of morbidly obese fatty boom bars being ritually humiliated on a daily basis is beyond me, unless you are a former concentration camp guard reminiscing about your past exploits. Perhaps this is Kate Winslet's fave show ???
