The ratings race, updated 10 am Tuesday
Channel Nine got back in the game on Monday with a 90 minute version of Domestic Blitz and a new episode of CSI, while Seven didn't even put up a fight. At this point in the week, Nine has 29.0 per cent of the prime time audience (despite Seven's dancing-led recovery on Sunday), while Seven has 28.4, Ten has 19.7, ABC has 17.1 and SBS has 5.8 (thanks to a modest recovery for Top Gear Australia, plus two Australian comedies).
The real winner of the night was Dawn French (pictured here with Andrew Denton), whose thoughtful and amusing responses to Denton's polite provocations drew 1.2 million to Enough Rope.

The ratings race, updated 6pm Sunday
The TV networks seemed to be in a carefree Melbourne Cup mood all week. As a result, they were taught a lesson about viewer loyalty. On Monday, Channel Seven rehashed its failed game show, The Rich List, and repeated its hit cop show City Homicide, with the result that Channel Nine won the night. On Wednesday, Nine showed a Will Ferrell movie instead of The Mentalist, and lost 400,000 viewers, while Ten replaced House with an extra episode of the cop show Life, and lost 200,000 viewers.
The week ended with a fall in audiences and a rise in viewer resentment about being taken for granted. Seven averaged 30.1 per cent of the prime time audience, with Nine on 26.3, Ten on 19.8, ABC on 18.3 and SBS on 5.55.
The most watched shows belonged to Seven: the Melbourne Rup race, Packed to The Rafters, Find My Family and The Zoo. Nine's hits were Two and a Half Men, CSI and 60 Minutes. Ten scored with NCIS, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, and Australian Idol, while the ABC got a similar result for Spicks and Specks and its news. SBS gained from Seven's collapse on Monday night, when Top Gear Australia enjoyed a resurgence to 653,000.
On Pay TV, the top scorers were the cricket in India (274,000 for Fox Sports 2), The Simpsons (200,000 for Fox 8), Family Guy (159,000 for Fox 8), Ice Road Truckers (155,000 for Fx 8) and America's Next Top Model (148,000 for Fox 8).

David Dale is the author of Who We Are -- A snapshot of Australia today (Allen and Unwin). To discuss Australian attitudes, go to http://blogs.sunherald.com.au/whoweare.
I think 7 must be at a crossroad, they have a problem in that they are running out of the type of programs which the bulk of people who watch TV, actually want to watch.
Shows like Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, Heroes etc. once the backbone of their ratings success over the last two odd years, well, they have turned into rods in their backs. Somehow these shows were turned in to soapies, became overly predictable or developed ridiculous plots and many Australian viewers became bored with them and stopped watching them.
At the moment 7 has one hit, admittedly a soapy, with their Tuesday night's Packed to the Rafters, pretty well all the other "hit" shows are reality shows which have a shelf life as to when people become bored with them and than, probably by next year, they will be stuffed as they clearly have no idea of programming and what people want to watch.
Their City Homicide, barely an infant as far as a TV show is concerned, in repeat. Bones, while watchable, not a high rater on twice a week. Criminal minds, not a bad show but in repeat, anyone who watched this show from the beginning will remember the re-run shown at 9:30 Wednesdays, in any event, two hours of it straight is too much. Thursday night, a night of lemons except for Scrubs and The Loop, but at that time of night, a job for the PVR. Friday night a non event , second rate movies.
The fact that they are winning the ratings at the moment really emphasizes how pathetic the viewing line up is on the other networks.
I guess the accountants at 7 are rubbing their hand with glee knowing their ratings success will get them extra dollars next year but when those ratings are based on an illusion, as overall viewing numbers keep dropping off, how much longer will the advertising industry pump the amount of money in to it which it has been?
how is the new abc breakfast on abc2 rating?
Tribal Mind replies: Not apparent in the top 150 shows for the day so far. Most people don't have ABC2 or don't know they have. Wait a while and ask me again.
Can someone tell me when Prisonbreak will be coming back? Put it on another late night Channel 7 if you can't fit it in on Thurs. Or switch it to your HD channel.
Dancing With The Stars hade a big finish but nowhere near as past series on Tuesday nights. The Strip has been bumped to 10.30pm on Thursdays, so I don't think it will get a second series. Meanwhile, Rush has received approval for a second series with similar ratings on Ten.
In answer to how many national viewers are seeing the breakfast show on ABC2,
I read in the newspaper last week, it's an extremely abysmal 8000. In that case it's losing - wasting taxpayer money and would get canned within a week if on a commercial network. It's a pity as it isn't too bad and is the total opposite of the moronically dumbed down breakfast shows on 7 and 9.
I just watched Bert on 20-to-1 on 9 Sunday Night, Sad, Very Sad. Gra-Gra gone to God, Sad. Now Bert for all the world looking like a Corpse played like a Ventriloquist Dummy on our national TV every night is so so f!@# Sad. Channel 9 STOP IT NOW! STOP IT NOW GODDAMN YOU!!!
OUT OF THE BLUE starts next Moday at 10.30 on Ten and I expect will air Monday to Thursdays (I'm not sure about Fridays). Before you whine that it should be on at 7pm or 6pm, the show is classified M so this way viewers can see episodes in full unlike if it was on at 7pm because then it would have to be edited to fit PG guidelines.
PRISON BREAK returns to Seven at the end of this month (probably in two weeks).
ABC2' ABC NEWS BREAKFAST gets between 5,000 & 10,000 on average. I don't think it will show up on the top 150 that TM gets in the near future.
Well, THE STRIP has been striped of its timeslot with THIS IS YOUR LIFE returning to its original timeslot of 8.30 Thursday - this week's about Adam Gilchrist. That is much better than that Shannon Noll episode - what a waste of time that Noll episode was. Another new TIYL will air on Sunday at 6.30pm. As J Bar wrote earlier, THE STRIP moves to 10.30 so THE STRIP will no longer be broadcast in HD because of STUDIO 60 on 9HD.
On Seven, THE UNIT is getting another try in prime-time with it returning next Wednesday at 9.30pm with the season 4 premiere (the last 2 eps of Season 3 won't be aired at this stage).
Also, returning next Wednesday is THE BIG BANG THEORY which will follow TWO AND A HALF MEN at 8pm; and on Seven AIR CRASH INVESTIGATION is also back at 7.30 from next week.
Good to see new FUTURAMA on Ten from tomorrow at 7.30.
I disagree with Zjonn.
Seven have done a brilliant job with their local and international shows.
Heroes was never really a big 'every person' show - and the massive debuts of it and Ugly Betty are more just proof of success of the marketing department.
Now into past their third and fourth years - it was inevitable that Desperate Houswives and Grey's Anantomy would lose their early sparkle. It was commented on here that Seven would be the hardest hit by the writers strike in 2008. Seven did well to play it's hand in the 2nd half of the ratings year - and they have won pretty much every week since the Olypmics. Seven's done a brilliant job of sticking with Bones and Criminal Minds - shows which spent their early days as non-ratings period summer shows.
Their local shows have a low failure rate. PTTR is a phenomenon and City Homicide is even a reliable ratings puller in repeat. Look at the disappointments Nine and Ten have had. Canal Road, The Strip etc.
I did enjoy Dawn French last night. I was trying to read Kafka's The Trial on the sofa but kept on getting distracted. Dawn 1, Kafka 0.
And Good Game was its usual fun self last night. I take it that's another ABC2 show that never makes it into the ratings chart? Shame.
Quoth Gareth on November 11, 2008 at 10:08 AM: "Heroes was never really a big 'every person' show - and the massive debuts of it and Ugly Betty are more just proof of success of the marketing department."
Actually, I've noticed nothing from Seven marketing. All the buzz for these shows (plus Despos, Lost, etc) for me come from online - from friends who have downloaded and enjoyed, or from overseas websites.
I think Seven just got damned lucky with some good shows that had good buzz before they even started trying to market them.
And once people start watching Seven, they're going to stick with it because they're a captive audience for all the promos for the other upcoming shows (and are missing all the promos on Nine/Ten/ABC/SBS).
Sorry, Mr Dale, forgot to mention before: I saw Jesse Jackson weeping tears of sadness at McCain's loss last night. Yay for MediaWatch and yay for whoever sent in that editing gaffe! (Bereft, Darren, was it one of you?)
Dammit. Forgot about Denton & Dawn. I watched 'Domestic Blitz' and my brain went to bed early while I lay on the couch dribbling.
Greatly amused to see the summation in the SMH today about Channel Ten & The ABC's 2009 line-ups.
ABC's looking promising with 'The Chaser' back for a wise shorter season. Andrew Denton's new show 'Project NEXT' sounds interesting. Let me get this straight...Is it a new show about auditioning potential hosts for a new show? That's what it sounded like. Interesting. And Jonathan Safran is always good although not necessarily a ratings winner.
Ten's line-up sounds inspired. New shows about: Chefs. Police. Vets. Gardeners.
How do they think this stuff up? Fresh. New. Exciting.
How about this: a new comedy about a commercial television station and it's clueless programmers who can't figure out why no-one wants to watch shows about fat people running up sand dunes or about chefs or vets or police or gardeners. Hilarity ensues.
By the way, I saw an 'Australia Trailer' on the weekend that wasn't an ad for Telstra. It was an ad for Kirk's Softdrinks. Still haven't seen one that's for the movie.
Tribal Mind suggests: for a link to the real trailers, click here.
How is 'The View' and 'Ellen' rating during the daytime in comparison to the other networks programming? Im really loving both shows at the moment especially Ellen.
Tribal Mind replies: I'll include them in tomorrow's chart.
Denton & Dawn was well worth seeing last night, Denton asking the probing questions without the use of a sledge-hammer & Dawn giving thoughtful answers.
I'm really irritated by a a fairly recent trend in the 6pm news bulletins, and that is what we shall call "faux news". Last noght during Nein news there were at least two crosses to the opening night of "High School Musical 3".
Now, Nein's demographic is not exactly the target market for this movie, and i would be surprised if the tween market particularly watched any news program, with maybe a few exceptions. Maybe it is to alert their parents before the nagging begins?
Switched over to 7 and they had it too.
Please STOP AVERTORIALS IN NEWS PROGRAMS. Are the stations that desperate for cash (obviously, yes)?
Thanks for the link TM. Not sure if you're being helpful or sadistic.
TM,
It seems some of the best comedy can be found long after most people's bedtime. May I ask how The Office rated on Sunday and Out of the Question last night?
Thanks in advance.
Tribal MInd replies: I'm interested that you describe Out of the Question as "some of the best comedy". It got 445,000. The Office on Sunday got 136,000, which would have been good if it had been on Pay TV.
Tqd asked, what was the story with the 'Jesse Jacksongate (Ha!)' story. I didn't tell 'Mediawatch' but wish I'd thought of it. When I notice stuff like that I'm torn between keeping it to myself & wallowing in smug and sharing it with the world and watching it dilute.
Like when I recommended Tina Fey should do Sarah Palin. I wanted to be the only one in the world who noticed both have brown hair & glasses. Then everyone caught on. Dammit.
Lots of press lately about the very low ratings for NINE NEWS and A CURRENT AFFAIR - and they are both doing desperate things to woo viewers - petrol voucher giveaways, promoting HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3 - not a good look!.
I saw BERT NEWTON on the TODAY SHOW this morning and it was clear hosts LISA WILKINSON and BANAL KARL were uncomfortable looking at him when they were asking him questions - he looks ridiculous and its kinda sad because I think he can be really funny but when you see him you just can't laugh - the hairpiece, the facelift and whatever he's done to his eyes have almost put him in the same mould as MICHAEL JACKSON - when he looked normal I really got into his music - as his appearance changed it just freaked me out and I lost interest - it's the same with BERT - I can't laugh at his jokes any more because basically I don't recognise him!
If what Seven shows on TV is brilliant, according to Gareth, then god help the lot of us.
It,s a load of hackneyed drivel LCD stuff, but them maybe I,m strange I like to have a story I can follow, most are struggling with the story.
A couple of questions for the Tribe.
Can anyone point me in the direction of Louis Theroux on DVD? It was one of the sharpest and most interesting series I have seen in recent times.
Also, any idea why Nein yanked the latest Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares from its graveyard slot? Any idea of when the rest of the series will be shown here?
TM Can you include the ratings for the 7.30 edition of The Simpsons
Thanks :)
TM you have been busy with all the info in the chart today.
Not happy Shirl with the repeat of NCIS last night - was expecting a new ep and got a resurrected Lauren Holly... waste of my recording time. Watched Rush after All Saints - very brave to kill off one of the main characters whilst still in first season..
Speaking of All Saints - next Tuesday is the final episode with Mark Priestley (Dan Goldman).
Also for any who were watching Psych on Ten HD - no eps from this week onwards - Shirl HD has now shown all of season 1 (and although they would have access to season 2 they are choosing to show movies instead).
The TODAY SHOW is edging ever so closely to SUNRISE - could the presense of KOCHIE and MEL on just about every SEVEN show be a sign of 'over exposure!'.
Good to see the last episode of INSIGHT recording good ratings - last night the show focused on the unemploymemt situation and what we might face in coming years! - Host JENNY BROCKIE went all out with a groovy seventies type outfit!!
Interesting to see that PARLIAMENT QUESTION TIME outrating MORNINGS WITH DAVID AND KIM - that show should be called BORING MORNINGS WITH DAVID AND KIM - I'm not sure what's worse - David Reyne as if he's about to fall asleep, the camp and annoying entertainment reporter who keeps pulling faces at the camera whenever he thinks he's funny (NOT!)...or the cheap set depicting what looks like a static rainforest as a backdrop with a pooy brown lounge - the whole show just doesnt work!!!
I noticed a promo for a new version of A Room with a View on Auntie on Sun night. I came across a blog re this film several months ago whilst doing some research (aka wasting time) - most of the comments left weren't favourable. So I am girding my loins in preparation of the ensuing outrage. Simon Callow IS Mr Beeb. End of story.
Thought Dawn French was great the other night as well - although not too sure about AD's references to her size. Would he comment on the size of Cate Blanchett's boobs for example?
And did I hear correctly that Chris Masters presented his last story on Four Corners on Monday night? If so, nooooooo.
Tribal Mind replies: The new version of Room With A View has been out on DVD for a while. It is better than the movie, with a more believable heroine.
Ten & NCIS repeat !! .They wonder why we do not watch TEN ! Such contempt . Not shown in the guides as a repeat.
NCIS was a repeat because it took a week off in the states for the election last week. Should be new eps again from next week. thats the main issue with fast tracking i guess.
Rush still hovering just under 900k unfortunately. its been renewed for a 2nd season though so its good Tens keeping faith with something. makes a change. Cathy you're right, very brave killing off a main character so early. especially one who was so involved in early storylines. anyone know why they chose to kill the character off? (trying not to spoil it for anyobdy who hasnt seen it but wants to)
Simspons tanked horribly last night. i know it was a repeat but still very low, the 6pm ep almost beat it! maybe ten should show the really really old eps. may draw back some of the people who grew up with them early on. much better writing then anyway
Tuned in to Neighbours last night. Not something I do very often but I was curious at how Michala Banas (I think) did taking over a well established role like Libby from Kym Valentine who was very ill.
I thought she did ok and she does look very similar, but it must have been a bit of a shock for anyone who hasnt watched in awhile. Suddenly the girl from McCleods was there being called Libby! How strange!
BTW I had an email from friend, a fellow Dr Who fan , who said she had heard that the next Dr was going to be Billie Piper, back but playing a female Dr??? Huh?? Now that is some really strange rumour. She reckons she read about it on the net somewhere but couldnt remember where. Has anyone heard any similar rumour? Sounds totally bizarre to me. If they wanted a female Doctor it would make more sense for Donna to come back as after all she was Doctor/Donna. Wierd.
Tribal Mind replies: One of many rumours, but only a suggestion. There has been no decision.
TM replied: I'm interested that you describe Out of the Question as "some of the best comedy".
Well it's certainly not in the league of The Office or The Hollowmen, say, but there's something very entertaining about it. I know I'm in the minority here, but it feels like hanging out with your mates and having a laugh before going to bed. Glenn Robbins has a rather underwhelming style to his comedy, but every so often he comes out with a cracker and it makes the show worth watching.
Why is there a picture of karen Tso?
Tribal Mind replies: Does there have to be a reason? In fact, it's because she used to do Insight.

It came up in an interview with David Tennant on BBC Breakfast trying to get him to offer suggestions on his replacement (he clearly did not want to) so the Billie idea was raised as a symbol of how silly the speculation is getting. He pointed out she was busy breast feeding at the moment. The other rumour is that new Doctor will be announced in the U.K. overnight our time when the first couple of minutes of the Christmas Special is going to be shown as part of the Children in Need telethon. Probably just a deliberate rumour to boost the charity event's ratings.
The Guide had Big Cat Diary on Ch10 last night...hoping we would find out if "little Toto" the baby cheetah had survived or had "gone to the farm" as I used to be told about animal deaths as a child. Another ABC regular that's gone to the commercials. But no, Futurama was on, so stayed with it, as with The Simpsons it's not a kid's show, but my old eyes have trouble reading all the signs in the background fast enough as that is where most of the humour is!!
Guess I'll have to wait to find out about "little Toto".....mother nature can be so cruel sometimes.
Tribal Mind remarks: Is all of this not what DVDs are for?
Quoth Shoopie: "Simon Callow IS Mr Beeb. End of story." Sorry, Mr Dale, but I'm with Shoopie on this one. (Although, yes, I will be watching on Saturday night, because it's based on a damned good book. Although that's no reason for it to be good, the world is littered with poor adaptations.)
Interestingly, my latest Empire mag (fairly trashy movie mag) had a reader's poll on the top 100 characters from movies. I read the list and most of the characters were actually from books/comics, originally. Amazing to realise (again) how little creativity Hollywood has.
Watching very little tv, as I seem to have developed a social life this week. How queer.

You could do as TM suggests and buy the DVD but with most productions like Big Cat Diary, they have websites so you can look up information :) The answer is that the producers themselves don't know. They do not know if he made it or not, they have not seen him be "taken to the farm" nor have they seen him alive... since they last filmed... hopefully he is still on the plains and "not in the farm" ...
PJ453: I totally forgot about Big Cat Diary!! I too caught a bit of Futurama. Definitely a lot of adult jokes there.
Sigh ... wish I was at home in front of the tele with a nice glass of wine watching what ever rubbish may be on tonight. Stuck at work unfortunately.
Wish I had told Media Watch about Rocketman Jesse Jackson. 'twas not me either. Perhaps there's a third person as anal as Darren or I.
Been quiet this week, but just dropping in to advise that DAAS have apparently released a DVD, according to http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=661712 and nobody told me.
TM....I'm in the demographic where buying dvd's of a tv show is still new, unless it is a "specially good" series. I've grown up (programmed more likely) by the tv where you just waited till the new series of a show came out.
kate...I kind of guessed that about Toto, come to think about it I don't think I've ever seen a "big cat" drop off this mortal coil on the numerous BCD's series I've watched.....it's so one sided....a real christians & the lions (sorry about the pun) the rest of the animal kingdom just doesn't seem to get a win!!! You see that Thompson gazelle running for it's life & sometimes you want it to just stop, turn around & devour the lion...leopard...cheetah, now THAT'S good tv!!! haha
Tm - do you have ratings for Lateline (ABC) and Ten Late News with Sports Tonight so we can get a full picture of the 10.30 slot?
Tribal Mind replies: Yes, I've put them in now, but haven't you had enough of that by now?
The Nicole and Hugh episode with Oprah will be shown by Channel 10 in primetime on 7:30pm Thursday November 20th.
TM in answer to Oprah ep apparently Shirl is fast tracking it to next Thursday 20 November at 7.30 pm
good to see 9am with david and kim rating better, there show is so much more intelligent than kerri anne or the morning show!! and also good to see law and order rating well lately
Programming updates for interested parties - US Networks have axed both Lipstick Jungle (shown on 7 here) and My Own Worst Enemy (Christian Slater show apparenlty bought by 7) Also unsuprising that prison Break looks like ending in current season - may even have two hour movie to tie up loose ends.
And read elsewhere Nein has announced some summer programming - subject of course to all cricket all the time.... Gossip Girl to be shown from season 1 (although I am aware has been shown on PayTV). Apparently they are also claiming to be showing ER season 14 (believe it when I see it and from memory think we were missing some of season 13 eps!!) Pushing Daisies, Fringe, The Closer, Survivor Gabon, McLeads Daughters and remaining eps of Temptation.
Saw The Informant last night on 10. It was actually quite good, despite the review. William McInnis is such a natural actor. More of the same please.
hmm, with a night like that are 9 now winning, or atleast close to 7 for the week?
How did 7's diplorable movie Shark Swarm go?
Tribal Mind replies: Nine won Friday but is not winning the week. 635,000.
Have a look at the first couple of minutes of the Next Doctor before the BBC makes them take it down.

Alas no James May but Jezza and Hamster will be here in February. If you go be sure to ask them what their visas allow them to do (if you have downloaded episode 2 you will understand).

Hey TM, any week to date figures. Would have to be awefully close after what appears 9's Twenty20 aided win.
Tribal Mind replies: I'm trying to maintain suspense till tomorrow morning
Hi Cathy,
We last saw ER on nein on Wednesday 30th January, with episode 13, season 13.
In America they have just seen episode 7 of season 15.
I haven't waited for nein.
Which reminds me, I must go off to *** and keep up to date with it.
Screw you, nein!
The Skerrick Boys thank you Harry, for the Doctor Who clip, which is quite possibly an impostor Doctor. I hope. Sure hop he's not the new one. Dreadful.
Dear Ch Shirl, Liar Liar is not the funniest movie ever, or is some (half) wit in your advertising department having a lend of the show's title.
any idea how Out of the Blues ratings compare to the slot average ie. what ratings was tens late news getting previously & what percentage of viewers at that time did it get ?
Tribal Mind replies: take me a while to research that..Watch this space.

Hey, I didn't realise The Daily Show was starting on Channel 10 already! And with that rating, it looked as if I may have missed the boat on that one... Buggerit.
Was mesmerised by "Friends and Crocodiles" last night on ABC. All quite beautifully done (even the 1980s fashions weren't too hideous).
And Mr Bear stayed up late watching Wallace and Gromit on Saturday night. Yes, we already own it on DVD and have seen it many times before, but not for a while and it's that "communal" viewing that I wanted him in on: something to discuss with his friends in the playground this morning. (Assuming he remembers all the way back to Saturday night!) I remember never being able to do that as a kid because my parents wouldn't let me watch commercial TV (and then added salt to the wound by not letting me watch Doctor Who, which was at least on the ABC!).
I don't think it affected me much. *twitch*
