The ratings race, updated 10 am Friday
Nine finally won a night, but not very strongly (as The Strip starts to slip). At this point in the week, Seven is averaging 30.9 per cent of the prime time audience, while Nine is on 24.9, Ten is on 20.2, ABC is on 18.9 and SBS is on 5.1. Seven should win the week massively and the year comfortably. You'll find, below, more details than usual about afternoon programs, because of reader requests.

Don't pity Channel Ten for the poor performance of its hot new version of 90210. Episode one of the "re-imagined" cult hit of the 1980s was Monday's most watched show with viewers aged 16-39, and episode two was their Number 4 most watched (after Aus Idol and Two and a Half Men). So Ten is reaching its traditonal target and advertisers have a new place to sell Clearasil.
Seven continues to control the older viewers, who clearly became oversaturated with Gordon Ramsay in the first half of the year and are not about to be dragged away from City Homicide for his latest adventures.

The ratings race, updated 10 am Monday
There's an expression used by Australian television programmers -- "to do a Yasmin". It's a similar concept to America's "jump the shark", and refers to a show called Yasmin's Getting Married, which started in August 2006 with 778,000 viewers in the mainland capitals and was cancelled four episodes later when it had sunk to 510,000.
Last Monday, Channel Ten launched a daily program called Taken Out, which is also about relationships, and drew 851,000 viewers. By Friday TO had sunk to 672,000 viewers. Did somebody say they'd seen Yasmin's ghost in Ten's corridors? Will the new description for a rapidly failing show be "It was Taken Out and ..."?
Yasmin also made a fleeting visit to the ABC on Wednesday, when its new comedy Very Small Business did exactly what its title said -- 708,000 viewers in the 9.30 timeslot that previously enjoyed 1.1 million for the opening episodes of The Hollowmen (now drawing 919,000 at 9pm).
And Channel Seven's programmers heard the rustle of her gown when they learned that Make Me A Supermodel, which had opened with 1.1 million viewers before the Olympics, had sunk to 928,000 last Thursday. But they weren't too worried -- Seven had nine of the ten most watched shows (see full chart here) and won the week.
For the ratings year so far, excluding the Olympic period, Seven has 27.9 per cent of the prime time audience to Nine's 27.6 (Ten 21.5, ABC 17.3, SBS 5.7). But Nine is leading with viewers aged 18-49.
The ABC's best performers were Midsomer Murders and Spicks and Specks, both on 1.3m. SBS drew 907,000 to Top Gear and 381,000 to Mythbusters. Pay TV's most watched shows included NRL: Eels v Warriors which brought 291,000 to Fox Sports 2 and and Project Runway Australia, which brought 241,000 to Arena.
Here's an idea: why doesn't Foxtel show the complete series of Yasmin's Getting Married? Even at her worst, Yasmin did twice as well as Foxtel's top performer. It's not as if Channel Ten has any further use for her, except as an ominous metaphor.

I've got something good to say about channel Nine. (I know).
Screening 'HellBoy' on Saturday was a good idea. I watched as did quite a few other people. Ninth place in the ratings for a movie that finished at midnight is pretty good. See, Nine, when you show a descent movie at a time when people can stay up & watch it (on a non-school night), everyone's happy.
I had something good to say about Seven too but I forget what it was.
Where did Doctor Who rank in last week's overall ratings?
Tribal Mind replies: 47. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
TM: re Doctor Who ranking - neither really. Slightly down on previous weeks, despite the actual viewership growing by nearly 40000 viewers nationally.
Tribal Mind remarks: It's down in the rankings because Australians seem to have suddenly returned to mainstream television, and all the top shows had bigger numbers than usual last week.
It appears from the numbers above that 7 would have won a close night on Sunday so maybe DWTS is doing its job. Given the strength of 7's Monday and Tuesday programming their yearly lead looks like growing.
Tribal Mind replies: Seven won Sunday. I'll start the running score for the week in tomorrow's update.
Dr Who really holding it's own pretty well considering a lot of competition on Sun nights now. And Idol and DWTS fairly even. Must be splitting the viewers causing family rifts as teenagers want to watch Idol and their parents want DWTS! Be interesting to see where the Doc's viewers go once the series is over. Can't be too many eps left.
Interesting to note that after the "Jamie Durie vs. Scott Cam" beat up on ACA, that the difference was all of 7000 viewers, which is a bit of a moot point as that was the last ep of the current series of Dometic Blitz.
Out of interest, are these average or peak figures?
Tribal Mind replies: Are which figures average or peak?
Hi TM, with Nine's new daytime lineup starting today, The View and Ellen, is it possible for this week to keep abit of a running score of the daytime lineup across the commerical networks?
Tribal Mind replies: Well, not the entire daytime lineup, or the chart will go on for ever. But a few of the highlights, yes.
Why did an extra 101000 people in Sydney sit down & turn on the TV after 'Jamie Durie's Outdoor Room' for DWTS, while every other city lost viewers (50000 in Brisbane)? Where did they all come from & where did all the others go?
Tribal Mind replies: Between November and February such questions are always answered by the phrase "something to do with daylight saving". But at this time of year, all reader speculation gratefully received ...
"Watched" Wire in the Blood on Friday night. I use inverted commas, because I spent long stretches with my fingers in my ears, pretending to do the crossword until I got the all clear from Mr TQD that it was safe to start watching again. Seriously creepy.
Also caught Hell Boy, because it was there, and while I whinged about each and every ad, I didn't get around to changing channels. It is an excellent movie, and I am looking forward to making some time to see the sequel on the big screen.
Stuffed up the recording of Dexter last night (my bad). Was just too tired to remember to make sure it was all set up when I dragged my weary carcass to bed at 9pm. Dagnabbit. Might have to dip my toe into the world of downloading to catch up. (Hah. I'll probably just swing it, and it'll be added incentive to get around to buying the DVDs some time.)
Mr TQD pointed out, in one of those rambling discussions that take place during ad breaks because one cannot possibly pay attention to ads, that the reason Nine has done so well with 2.5 Men is that they've kept it in the same timeslot forever, so it builds up an audience. You know, no shuffling things in the schedule, desperately looking for an audience? (Please correct us if we're wrong.) Because it certainly can't be the jokes or Charlie Sheen's wardrobe that keeps on bringing the punters back. (Honestly, bowling shirts are so 2000...)
Em, only 3 episodes of Dr Who left!! Nooooooooooo!!!!!
You ask where Doctor Who viewers will go when the season finishes in 3 episodes time? I'll be switching the telly off and starting the last Harry Potter novel (now in paperback).
Apart from the fact I'm in the sticks and don't count ratings-wise, 60 Minutes is crappy tabloid journalism (is it just me of is Liz Hayes attempting to morph into Barbara Walters?), Vyle on AusIdol is repugnant, and from what I've read, they've reduced the airtime that BugEyes and Flippy get and have Shrieky and her Bratz bobble head on WAY TOO MUCH. Make the bad lady stop!
As for DWTS, and the heir apparent to the Shouty McShouterson throne that Georgie Parker once had a stranglehold on. Considering they dumped Paul Mercurio they've dumped 25% credibility.
Darren - a sensible answer for the extra 100,000 in Sydney - 100000 stopped for dinner and some went to the ABC news at 7pm and came back for DWTS at 7.30..
Or some tried Nein to see if the footy was on - remembered it was Storm and Bunnies and then decided to give DWTS a go....
Is anyone trying the "new 90210" - not one for me but interested to know what people think..
By the way Cat who asked a few weeks ago about Shirl fastracking House - the answer is it is returning with new season on Wedensday 24 September along with Life at 9.30... will make Wednesdays interesting...
And any Eureka fans ShirlHD is showing it 10.25 on Thursday
"Out of interest, are these average or peak figures?" by Alex on September 08, 2008 at 11:17 AM
Of course the general figures are average. If they're peak they're prone to far more manipulation by the TV networks. Say for example, "Taken Out got 900,000" might be a peak figure but would be a gross manipulation by Ch 10 if it said that.
For some reason the ABC is showing Midsomer Murders out of order. Last weeks episode was shown in the UK in July while last nights episode was shown in January. Next two episodes were shown in July but in reverse order. There is one more episode to go to finish the series and it was the last one shown in the UK in July. Maybe I am just being pedantic.
I noticed that 10HD was showing US gridiron at 10.30 this morning. Certainly something different for a Monday morning.
Tribal Mind remarks: Surely the advantage of Midsomer Murders is that it can be shown in any order and repeated endlessly because its main viewers don't remember if they've seen it before.
TM, Just curious, how did the Aussie film, Three Dollars, rate on SBS last night? Thanks
Tribal Mind replies: 205,000 - about the same number who bought tickets at the cinema.
Just watched the first eppisode of season 7 of The Shield, Brilliant!!!!!!
With performances by Micheal Chicklis(spelling) great.
Worth downloading because we wont see it here anytime soon.
TM: To clarify my earlier question: do these figures (all of them) represent the highest viewership scored by the programme over the duration of its broadcast or an average of the audience figures recorded over each of the 10 to 15 minutes segments of that time? To illustrate: A program might score very highly during half-time of a football match on another network, providing a high peak figure, but fairly lowly overall, weighing down the figure as an average.
Tribal Mind replies: The figures I quote in the charts are ALWAYS the average over the entire showing time of the program.
Interesting situation here in Victoria with Supreme Court partially lifting the ban on Underbelly, allowing Channel Nine to show edited version the first five episodes. The judge ruled that episode 6 could not be shown because it would prejudice an upcoming court trial. Nine has reacted quickly by scheduling the five episodes on 8.30pm Sundays and Tuesdays starting September 14, putting them against Dancing with the Stars and Australian Idol on Sundays, and Packed to the Rafters and NCIS on Tuesdays. It should still rate well even though many Victorians would have seen the whole series by whatever means.
Why isn't Channel 7 broadcasting the Para Olympics? After viewing last night's ratings I reckon they have managed to let the perfect opportunity for a ratings bonanza slip through their fingers. Just send Jamie off to tart up the para olympic athletes' houses/backyards while the games are on. A missed opportunity to tug on our heartstrings...fools.
Speaking of which - after viewing a few too many minutes of Nein's Domestic Blitz last night, I have been forced to suck lemons all day to counteract the cloying, sickly sweet, over-sentimental, self-congratulatory tearjerker.
Bereft, re DWTS and Shouty McEtc - don't forget Seven now has the contract for the nursing homes...
OK, darren, where is the real darren and what have you done with him?
I may be 59 but I can still spot a Midsomer Murders repeat... so 'pass' on UKTV. My question, David, if you will, is how're the repeats of Sea Change scoring on ABC1 afternoons about 2pm? I ask because "Packed to the Rafters" reminds me so much of that series... well written, extremely capable actors, excellent direction, quirky folky music background and a plot that's neatly telegraphed to the viewer so everyone's prepared to know what's coming next. We loved Sea Change - and we enjoy Rafters as well. Maybe you could include Sea Change's ratings figures in your next listing, please?
Tribal Mind replies: I'll include it in the afternoon coverage I've rashly promised from tomorrow.
"Tribal Mind remarks: Surely the advantage of Midsomer Murders is that it can be shown in any order and repeated endlessly because its main viewers don't remember if they've seen it before."
Yes to a point, but the births & marriages plots do have a time line and the "young" detective actor can change from series to series... Otherwise, yes somewhat interchangeable
Cathy @12:53 pm (yesterday),
101000 people decided to face DWTS AFTER dinner? In that case there's 101000 dinners on 101000 floors around Australia. Even on an empty stomach DWTS always manages to dredge something up from deep down inside (and it's not feelings of wonderment).
Hi Shoopie.
After last week's hilarity (I'm going to look into Lithium), had an attack of 'if you can't think of anything good to say don't say anything' yesterday.
Over it now.
I watched the new 90210 last night. I will admit, I was a huge fan of the original (for the first 3 seasons anyway, after that it dropped in quality), so I was a bit cynical about this new venture. Surprisingly, I liked it. It is complete fluff, I admit that freely, but that's what I was looking for, that's the reason to watch a show like 90210 (similar to the reason I watch Desperate Housewives, for example). It was very watchable, and the casting of the younger kids was great - two very likeable actors in the main roles of Annie and D(some odd American name I can't remember at this stage). Also enjoyed the fact that Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth were there, although that plot point (Shannen's character showing up) didn't quite flow as well as the rest of the show. But I'll watch it again. I will be very interested to see how the ratings go (and hope it goes well enough to stay, but with 'Taken Out' sticking around...it seems to have at least a fighting chance).
I hate the fact now that there are so many talented athletes competing in the Paralympics, winning more medals than the 'able-bodied' athletes, yet it gets 1/16th of the coverage. Those athletes are the people who should be called heroes, not someone like Stephanie Rice with her endorsements and sponsors. Now I'll get off my soapbox!!
Bereft, yeah I know I wont be watching much TV on Sun nights after the Doc is finished. What little I have seen of Idol is woeful. Very mediocre "talent" and as you say the repugnant Vyle etc dont inspire me to watch.
As for DWTS never watch and wont start now . So after the Doc I shalll probably use Sun nights to catch up on recorded stuff or see what Foxtel is offering.
And only 3 eps left!! And only some "specials" next year. What are we to do without the Doctor???
hello tm do you know why SBS has removed PBS Nightly business Report?
An informative show on the us stockmarket.
also how did primetime crime rate?
Tribal Mind replies: No. 337,000.
I can't stop laughing at the figure for Kitchen Nightmares USA. Serves you right Ch 9 for overexposure earlier on in the year. That's 732k for an 8.30pm timeslot right?
Re "Why isn't Channel 7 broadcasting the Para Olympics? by Shoopie on September 08, 2008 at 04:38 PM"
It's on ABC2, so if you have digital tv then watch away :=). I found out when one of my shows (Good Game) got temporarily shafted for that!
how did the US open final go?
Tribal Mind replies: 176,000.
I actually thought that City Homicide might be affected by the return of Ramsay and the debut of 90210 but I was wrong. Virtually no effect. In fact it did 100,000 better than last week and the second highest ratings ever.
Looking at 90210 ratings, Good News Week ratings don't seem too bad now. Australian Idol is dropping down to dangerous territory and Taken Out probably can't survive with those ratings.
Gordon Ramsay has been overexposed and those ratings are shockingly bad now. The same must be true for David Attenborough because his audience has almost halved from the record ratings he achieved.
I think TEN must have married Yasmin off to Torchwood, because the way they're treating it's Series 2 Aus premiere is like being Taken Out and ..... They screen it in a HD-only late Monday spot with no promotion whatsoever and don't even mention it on their site or 'TV show' list. Even Yasmin had a better date than that.
Re: 90210,
I can imagine parents of teenagers all over the country trying to explain why that girl in the car was down below the dash tying up that guy's shoe-laces for him while he sat there with his eyes rolling back in his head and why it was being shown at 8:45 pm? Are people that blase about that kind of stuff now? Is it just me? Am I that square? Actually, maybe teenagers all over the country are explaining it to their parents.
The main problem I have with 90210 is that you can't tell who are the adults & who are the children. Everyone is 25 years old. Maybe Ian Zeiring could have a cameo as someone's grandfather. Everyone has a perfectly formed chest. Everyone has blinding teeth. Jennie Garth hasn't aged a nano-second in the last 15 years.
I couldn't pick which one of the teachers will have an affair with which one of the students but I'm sure that's in the script for the next few episodes. The whole show's chockful of possible scandlous scenarios for when the ratings start to slide. Makes for a cute double with Aus Idol. First kids can learn how not to do music, then stay up and find out how not to be human.
By the way, I wonder if David Attenborough knows how Nine are promoting his docos? 'Funky Monkeys'??? James Brown soundtrack??? It's certainly a change from the ABC.
And lastly, anyone think the 'Hole in the Wall' episode they're promoting for this week is strange? Blind-folding the contestants when the object (so I've heard) is to LOOK at the HOLE and fit through it? Why not just push people into pools? Maybe I'm just not getting into the spirit of things.
Did any conspiracy theorists watch Four Corners last night?
Thanks arthur for the info re the Paralympics (I have learnt how to spell it now!) but I was actually having a go at Channel 7 for not broadcasting the games. Would love to know the thinking behind their decision not to broadcast the games. I agree with Beckala - Stephanie Rice ad nauseum. Also agree with you re Gordo - he is even appearing in the women's trashlies now. Enough already, I am beginning to get a 3 star Michelin spare tyre.
Good to hear you are back to normal, Darren - I don't know about Lithium though - a doped up Darren sounds too much like a kid on red cordial :)
As if we didnt know it before but now I am even convinced Aus Idol is a rort. Sunday evening the hosts said: After the country has decided who will make the wildcard round with the most votes then the judges will decide on 3 more So why 2 seconds after the voting had even closed were the judges able to put theirs through when the votes technically couldnt have even been counted that quickly! Did they already know who Australia would through? Hmmmmmmm me smells a rat!
Congratulations to Channel 10 for coming 4th in Sydney now. A job well done. When will you review your format ? When it's too late ?
Watched 90210 last night. Master 7.16 was still up (claiming a bellyache which magically started when I sat down to watch the 2nd 1/2 of Top Gear) so he saw the aforementioned front of car trouser action. Luckily it went straight over his head.
Will say the chick who plays the daughter could break if she bent over. The stick thinness of Hollywood actresses goes to a new extreme.
I didnt watch 90210 but my son just had to record it for his later viewing pleasure. I told him I did not want to watch such trash and watched 4 corners instead. Conspiracy theorists unite! It was an interesting program, done by the BBC and pretty even handed in it's reporting of both sides of the argument. I personally dont know what I believe about the whole 911 conspiracy thing but nothing in this world surprises me anymore. I am becoming cynical and suspicious in my old age. I think I have watched too many eps of the X Files! Damn that cigarette smoking man!
Darren, please keep away from sedation. We like you agro and peeved!
Why did you list the ABC in fourth order, when they were clearly third. ABC got 20.3 for the week compared to Ten's 19.6. Bias against the ABC?
Tribal Mind replies: Yep, that must be it. Unless it was just habit.
Ten had the Swans game on delay so not surprised the ratings went down .I will not watch a delayed game & listen instead to the radio call .I want to know the score as it happens.
Best thing about Burn Notice being gone (is it back next week?) - I got to wrestle the remote over to SBS for The Mighty Boosh. Does my head in, every time. (I'm sure it made nary a blip on the ratings chart, so I won't even bother asking about its ratings.)
Quoth Cathy on September 08, 2008 at 12:53 PM: "And any Eureka fans ShirlHD is showing it 10.25 on Thursday"
*sob* I'm a Eureka fan, thanks to a friend who downloaded the first series for me. But I don't have HD... yet...
CFD asked why SBS has removed PBS Nightly business Report, an informative show on the us stockmarket.
I love Nightly Business Report (NBR) too and I used to watch it when it was on SBS at lunchtime. Unfortunately SBS removed the show 2-3 months ago from the main channel and move it to the digital World News Channel, where it is now shown on 2.30pm Tuesdays to Saturdays.
It appears (according the th 7 TV guide) that Burn Notice is back on next week.
Wow! Flashback time! John Orcsik is playing a warden on All Saints! 10 points to the first who names the late 70's/early 80's drama he starred in?
Can Ten please stick with Dexter. Maybe try catching up to the US, might help the ratings.
Oh and Rush is a good show - very Police Rescue. It almost makes up for Taken Out.
I'm on holidays in the states and having a blast wading through the 80 odd channels of garbage they get to watch, hoping for a few gems. It doesn't help that the new seasons of most shows don't start till next week. Interestingly the new 90210 hasn't aired here yet.
My favourite listing in the TV guide was for 2 shows on the Reality Channel (how scary is that concept), "14 kids and pregnant again" followed by "I am my own twin". I don't think I'll be complaining so bad about 7, 9 and 10's programming.
Anyone seen a show called Chuck? I saw a preview of the second season last night and paid attention because it had Adam Baldwin from Firefly in it.
Bereft,
You're not talking about Cop Shop are you?
Hey, Bereft, I am pretty sure John Orscik was on Cop Shop. As was Paula Duncan who I think was his real life wife for a time.
Am I right?
Bereft - may I have Cop Shop for 10 points please... (before teaming up with the lovely Paula Duncan) Am embarrassed I even remember. It is true, what is seen can not be unseen, what is learnt can not be unlearnt (you just forget where you filed it)
Tribal Mind remarks: Hey, if you guys are all so good at TV history, why are you not contributing to our search for the best lines ever spoken on Australian television? Click here and show how good your memory is
I have never - not once - watched a reality TV show. But, after accidentally switching it on, I'm having terrific fun watching Wipeout. Feel guilty about it nonetheless.
Tribal Mind replies: Don't worry. Wipeout is not a reality show. It's just a game show in the classic tradition.
Packed To the Rafter was only slightly down but Find My Family did brilliantly. Another factual that hus struck a chord with viewers.
All Saints still going strong too but Rush suffered a drop. I still think Ch 10 are mad for leaving Rush in that timeslot against All Saints. It should have gone to Wednesdays at 8.30pm or 9.30pm.
Wipeout, RSPCA Rescue and Find My Family picked up a lot of the viewers who were tuned into Australian Idol over the past two weeks. The Simpsons doesn't hold viewers interest any more.
Not very good ratings for Ellen DeGeneres compared to the chat shows on Ch 10 and The View doesn't do much better. All of them get slaughtered by All Saints repeats from six years ago.
Cath, em & ozinoz, 10 points to each of you!
Stay up late enough and you can see other Crawfords Productions on early morning TV. Like Carson's Law. I'm just waiting for reruns of Chances so I can gouge my eyes out.
Call Girl was less interesting last week. Mr Skerrick was comparing it to Sex & The City. Well, at least the antics of the "sexually liberated" one whose name escapes me.
ABC1 is showing a hi-lights package of the Paralympics each night 6pm to 7pm. The best thing about it is the commentators (especially Peter Wilkins with the cycling) are showing real excitement even if an Australian isn't winning!! I think it's because they are mostly radio sport commentators & their enthusiasm is for the event not who's in it. Grand Designs showed people with toooo much money to spend last night but once again Kevin's commentary was priceless.
Good to see some Australian drama making a comeback on Channel Seven - the high ratings for PACKED TO THE RAFTERS should inspire the networks hopefully to invest more in Australian drama and less in reality TV crap.
TAKEN OUT should be on its last legs if this weeks ratings are anything to go by - 30 women all wanting 'that perfect man' and using a TV show and the push of a red button to snag him - how classy!!
Most of them have declared they are over the club scene but would prefer to stand around a TV studio in their nighttime clobber but minus a bacardi breezer or two and choose their mate - that's a sure fire way to find the man of your dreams!
I refused to watch the premier of 90210 on the basis that TORI SPELLING hadnt been included in the cast - she was the only reason I watched the original - her ever changing appearance over the years and her eventual 'alien' look kept me rivetted every episode - I actually was looking out for her in the X FILES and thought her character might have been her father AARON SPELLING in drag - strangely enough he/she was always courted by the best looking blokes on the show and this despite a boob job that left with a dent in her cleavage as big as the Sydney Heads!
Family values prevail my (insert swear word). Check out Secret Diary's ratings - basically holds 571k for a late night timeslot!!!
Yes, I can remember Cop Shop and what is even more embarrassing I can remember watching Homicide on Friday nights.
Talking about TV history - after watching Roller Derby Dolls on ABC last night, does anyone else remember the Roller Derby show in the 70's? Of course, I was very young at the time and cannot understand my mother allowing me to watch it.
Sorry TM, I can barely remember what I heard yesterday let alone years ago.
Wasn't there a show about the goldfields called Rush? It starred John Waters as a policeman. The Late Show did a spoof of it and called it Mud. Is spoof a real word?
GJ: You can see the dent in Tori Spellings cleavage if you ever see helicopter photos from her first wedding. I also suspect that you can see the dent if you found her on Google maps.
Suffered 5 minutes of Taken Out last night. I'm not a usual Tuesday Night viewer, but Little A's was cancelled. Total unadulterated (and I used the term "adult" under advisement) dreck.
Mind, I did see some clip of some bimbette who thought a carpenter laid carpet!
Burn Notice next week! It's too good to be true. Ch10 actually sticking with a program? I may be speaking too soon.
New episodes (I think) of Battlestar Gallactica on 10HD on Thursday nights too everyone.
hey TM thanks for the ratings for Ellen and The View.. will be interesting to see what they are by the end of the week.. 9 would do better to just repeat old midday movies coz the ratings for ellen and the view are terrible
If it's unable to stay over 1 million national viewers week after week and I don't think it will be, it'd be unsurprising if 90210 (that airs on the CW network in the US), gets relegated to maybe 8.30 or 9.30 Friday nights (that'd be a good move to stop all the repeat films Ten screens on Friday nights), or is taken off and screened over the summer recess.
I did see the Four Corners BBC doco. It needed to be 3 times longer and there's no doubt the Bush neo cons were behind the inside job that was September 11, but this is a fairly complicated topic that's too dense to debate on a blog like this.
TM, how did Make Me A Supermodel: Off the Runway rate last night? I saw parts of it and it seems to me like an attempt at a Big Brother Uncut-style programme. I don't think this show overall has found its feet yet.
Tribal Mind replies: 407,000.
Anyone see 'Kenny's World' last night? I caught the last five minutes or so & thought it was a bit funny ......except for the presence of Kenny.
Wouldn't it be better if it was just Shane Jacobsen cashing in on his Kenny fame & trawling the world for toilet-culture? He's trying to do a Borat & Borat he aint.
His porta-loo expert with the soggy-palate routine is really old. He's stuck in character and can't get out.
Appropriate though for Ten the raw sewerage Network (J Bar).
Sorry, I think it's Randwick Geoff that says "Ten the raw sewerage Network", not J Bar. I checked in the under-utilised but highly useful archived blogs section.
Call off the lawyers.
Re: Kenny's World. I watched and enjoyed it, but that may well be because I like toilet humour. I think it must be hard to keep in character when you're doing that kind of stuff.
The Hallowmen was good last night. I had a few laughs. Stayed up and watched Very Small Business and did not find it at all amusing. Pretty bad really. I think they could have taken the concept and made it a lot better.
I'm with you Nic, I thought Hollowmen was good - it seems to be getting funnier each week. As for Small Business - I left the room and found the ironing basket.
Hollowmen is improving - but I was a bit worried about Lachy Hulme's (Murph) homage to Elvis hair - it seems to be getting more and more bouffant each week! Next week he may be able to have a Sarah Palin beehive.
Read elsewhere Nein has panicked with all Gordy all the time and moved his "fasttracked" show till after the debut of Fringe next week (that is 10 pm Wednesday)
Sat sewing taekwondo outfit hems last night. Infinitely more entertaining that Very Small Business. Not sure whether it's because I'm in small business myself (no I'm not a dog washer) or whether it's something that Kenny should investigate.
Kenny's World did well considering the poor lead-in that Bondi Rescue Bali gave it. A bit silly for Ch 10 to run a factual up against another factual. We've already seen Ch 7 and Ch 9 fail when they've both tried this, a number of times. I can't believe the huge ratings for 2.5 Men and also beating both factuals. Maybe 'Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?' should have gone back in its old timeslot here and let Bondi and Kenny's World have Thursdays.
So You Think You Cand Dance is getting pathetic ratings at 8.30pm. So stupid that Ch 10 didn't at least try Rush in this 8.30pm-10.30pm timeslot.
Things aren't looking very good for The View. Are viewers put off by the similarities to last year's flop The Catch-Up and not realise that this is the original?
Tribal Mind wnders: Why would you imagine that the kind of people who are home during the day would care about a bunch of American women talking about American issues?
What an abysmal show HOLE IN THE WALL is - it's like HEY HEY ITS WEDNESDAY LETS PUT SOME CHEAP CRAP ON TV - good grief! - is there nothing CHANNEL NINE will stoop to to get cheap laughs and even cheaper ratings - I wonder how the producers ever sold this ridiculous concept to NINE - maybe something like this.
PRODUCER TO THE HEAD OF CHANNEL NINE
"We went through our archives Sir and managed to find those dodgy space suits the Robinson family wore in LOST IN SPACE - we thought what the heck can we do with these - then we thought lets get all of our 'out of work stars' who we pay zillions but don't actually put on TV and get them to wear the space costumes, minus any underwear and hurl them into a pool! And to add even more suspense we'll get a sliding wall with a stupid shape in it to slam them while their down. We definitely think our loyal nine viewers will love it!"
I can just hear Kerry Packer's booming voice from above!
"OVER MY DEAD BODY!!!""
Sewing taekwondo outfit hems? Lucky! That box in the corner of the room with the glass on the front and crap inside really aint doing it's job lately (no it's not a terrarium).
I'm rivetted by some drying paint myself and recording the lawn to watch later. It's starting to grow!!! Ooooh! Aaaah! Now THAT'S entertainment.
I'm hard pressed to gather even a skerrick of enthusiasm for anything on TV at the moment. It's all blehhh. There's tumble-weeds blowing through my loungeroom.
I bought the book of 'No Country for Old Men' the other day, having seen the movie & thought it near perfect. It's (the book that is) sitting on my bedside table vibrating slightly. I read the first page & it's too good to bear.
Books good. TV bad.
Also recommend 'The Road' (also by Cormac McCarthy, in case anyone cares). It's unput-downable & also helps drown out the chirping bloody crickets & dogs barking in the distance.
Ooooh look, there's another tumble-weed.
Quoth Bereft Skerrick: "Sat sewing taekwondo outfit hems last night."
What is it about taekwondo and small boys? Mr Bear is a keen practitioner (you should see him practicing his turn kicks: it's usually followed by "NOT NEAR YOUR LITTLE SISTER!!").
I watched no TV last night, apart from a bit of Kiki's Delivery Service, which was quite charming (but I would have preferred the subtitled version, I'm no fan of dubbed dialogue).
Tribal Mind remarks: I always assumed tqd stood for taequondo. But does this blog now have a new classification for programs, along the lines of "heading for Yasminland": "taequondo-worthy"?
A program would be tqd-worthy if sewing hems is a more entertaining alternative. What shows in the new crop are tqd-worthy this week?
The Hollowmen is holding it's own with strong dialogue, could do with a bit more confrontation...Murph saying "spin it yourself" or something. Very Small Business just doesn't seem to be hitting the spot, you feel more sorry than hateful. It's certainly not in the league of The Office for cringeworthyness.
The Hollowmen was excellent last night.
Long may it continue.
TM, in response to your response from my last post from last week, there's only one cpandilo, however usually I don't remember everything I want to write in my posts and I forget to comment about something from time to time. This is why I have multiple posts sometimes.
TM, was the figures from THE VIEW & ELLEN from Monday for their scheduled timeslots (12-1pm, 1-2pm) because the Tennis actually lasted till 1.30pm & so THE VIEW started at 1.30 followed by ELLEN at 2.30pm?
Lower than expected figures for both THE VIEW and ELLEN though it is absolutely fantastic to see both in Widescreen High Definition (the same goes for ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT) as of yesterday - though I wish the music was kept the same as before for ET.
BTW, from Sunday on 9HD, ELLEN will be repeated late from Sunday through to Thursday. Here's next week's times (Syd & Bris only):
Sunday @ 11.40pm (double episode)
Monday @ 12.10am (early Tuesday)
Tuesday @ 12.20am (early Wednesday)
Wednesday & Thursday @ 12am
Perhaps ELLEN might get extra viewers then.
Nine have switched KITCHEN NIGHTMARES USA to Wednesday @ 10pm. So Nine will show the movie SOMETHINGS GOTTA GIVE from 8.30 Monday followed by SENSING MURDER @ 11.15. Because of this, THE CLASS won't premiere on 9HD next Monday night, instead the line up will be:
11.15 THE WAR AT HOME
11.45 HAPPY HOUR
12.10 ELLEN
Followed by a Nine simulcast from 1.05am.
Yes, BURN NOTICE returns to Ten next Monday @ 9.30pm. Alos, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA returns tonight on TEN HD @ 8.33pm.
Johnson, NIGHTLY BUSINESS REPORT has been on SBS WNC (Ch. 33) @ 2.30pm for a long time. Guess it is just now that it has disappeared that you've noticed it on Channel 33.
My theory is that the reason for NIGHTLY BUSINESS REPORT not being on SBS (main channel) is because of its poor video quality and there tend to be technical difficulties sometimes.
Because of the AFL on Friday night (7.30-11pm), BETTER HOMES & GARDENS will be shown on Saturday 6.30pm in Sydney.
Obviously Bereft's statement about the late-night repeats of CARSON'S LAW, etc. apply to regional viewers only who receive WIN.
TM, how does MASTERCHEF GOES LARGE & FAST ED'S FAST FOOD do on Seven (weekdays from 3pm)?
Tribal Mind replies: The Ellen etc numbers were probably actually the tennis audience, since OzTAM does not adjust the figures for real timing until its weekly report on Sunday. Doubt if that will make much difference though.
Masterchef and Ed in the chart now, along with Pie In The Sky.
TM, I have to say I have found TV this week to be pretty tqd worthy the whole week. And I am doing a Darren and reading my way through the last instalment of the "Twillight" series of books. Teenage Vampires to the uniformed. Harry Potteresque books but I have enjoyed the series so maybe I am going through second teenagehood as opposed to second childhood? Which can't be far away as I already throw tantrums aimed at the rubbish on TV.
And is it just me or is there an increase in the number of ads per program ? Or have I just lost patience entirely with commercial TV after watching so much ABC and DVD's lately (in between reading that is) that I notice a lot more?
I'm actually really enjoying Very Small Business (thanks to iview). It's a very subtle comedy. Now I just need to catch up on The Hollowmen, which I have unfortunately missed the last few weeks.
There is always bad stuff on tv, but you just need to look for the gems. ABC on Wednesday, SBS on Monday nights (except for The Mighty Boosh) and City Homicide are my must sees. Enjoyed the first episode of Packed To The Rafters as well, but haven't seen the others yet.
TM: it's more a case of sew-worthy. I was also sewing labels onto Master 7.16's Little A's outfit.
tqd: it's a case on instilling a little bit of discipline and control. And a way of getting The Masters Skerrick to stay still for the other 6 days and 23 hours when Doctor Who isn't on.
darren: I've never been used as a quantity of excitement before.
Last eve when it came down to watching the UK Apprentice I went to bed and contiued reading the last Harry Potter instalment.
GJ: "I can just hear Kerry Packer's booming voice from above! "OVER MY DEAD BODY!!!""
Well, yes, precisely... Ch 9 are making programming decisions because their former owner is deceased. Personally, I see the show as pointless & not entertaining but over 1 million people disagree with me and supposedly watch this show on a regular basis so it is hard to fault Ch 9 judgment on this one no matter how tacky you think the show. Still, I can fault their judgment on The Strip, such a blatant rip-off of CSI Miami, but without the slick editing & glitzy soundtrack. CSI Miami (even though not a fan of that show either) does it so much better.
TM asks: which shows are tqd this week?
It might be easier to ask which shows aren't.
Besides the news, all I've watched this week is 'Grand Designs'. The rest of the time I've spent flicking aimlessly trying to avoid tqd shows like 'Aus Idol' & 'Hole in the Wall' and 'Domestic Blitz' and 'Kenny's Bali Police Rescue of Helpless Animals & Small Children You Need to Feel Sorry For'.
The problem as I see it is that people mistake 'not awful' for 'good stuff' and 'crap' for 'not awful'. Standards have gone to the dogs.
One thing I have learnt from TV this week is where that pre-grated parmesan in a can comes from. The Ped-Egg.
Yes, I'm being entertained by infommercials. Things are grim.
For fans of 30 Rock I have read that 7 is programming an extra ep of the current series on friday 26 September at 11.15 pm..
Em am curious about the books you are reading - Twilight - witty lines a la Buffy??? and who is author - may add to my reading pile..(not as intellectual as Darren - No Comac McCarthy - but quite a few legal/ crime thrillers and mysteries).
My response to bad TV programming is cinema (not household chores - sorry Mrs Skerrick!) - off to see Mummy 3 tomorrow.
Tribal Mind remarks: If you liked Hole In The Wall, you'll love Mummy 3.
To GJ & Kate
No offence but I'm the type of person who doesn't want to see any brain-intensive shows when coming home from a day of work. That's why I find shows such as Hole In The Wall & The Strip entertaining week in, week out. I especially liked HITW this week as the host was unexpectedly forced to face the wall & got dunked! Admittedly I only watch The Strip because I like CSI Miami, and I can't understand why non CSI Miami fans would watch The Strip.
(Yes I watch some shows from other channels too. And yes, Kerry Packer would be rolling in his grave now.)
And TM "On current trends, Seven should win the week massively and the year comfortably." Haha you like others said that for Nein before the Olympics and are eating your words.
Cathy, the Twillight series are written by author Stephanie Meyers. And not really like Buffy as they are not comical as such. They are classed as Teenage fiction and revolve around a teenage girl who moves to this small town and falls in love with a teenage vampire. The books are well written and just the type of books that get you in as you want to see what happens next. Easy reading but engrossing. Highly recommend if you like fantasy with a touch of romance. Or if you are a Harry Potter fan. BTW the first book "Twilight" comes out in movie form shortly.
If you want something a bit grittier I highly recommend "We need to talk about Kevin" by Lionel Shirver. It's one book that is not easy to forget. A bit of a hard read at times but brilliant! And scary!
Sorry, TM, I got in book mode there and I know this is a column about TV but questions were asked!
I think the drop in The Strip is expected given all the flaws it has. Terrible Footy Show ratings too. Quite interesting that Make Me a Supemodel is now over 1 million. It must have picked up some of those Australian Idol viewers from the last two weeks. I think Ch 10 will be happy with Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? too. Getaway has dropped quite a bit too, so competition in that timeslot is close.
Em, I judged the book by its cover and bought the first book in the Twilight series - read a couple of chapters and the last page and gave it to my niece who is a fantasy fan - oh, and much younger than I am. I thought it was a Mills & Boon for teens with a vampire twist - not to my taste at all. Cathy, the author is Stephanie Meyer.
I think Channel Nein deserves an award for the most blatant piece of cross promotion last night on "Celebrity" Getaway - if only they would. Anyhoo, why didn't they just call the show "Behinds the Scenes at The Strip" or something equally imaginative.
Am off to purchase a vibrating book...
Kerry isn't just rolling in his grave. He's on high speed rotisserie.
Can you believe that Oz had "Hole In The Wall" before the US? It's a pity it's only ice cold water on the show, and not a vat of highly caustic Hydrochloric Acid. What a favour the world would be getting then. Entertainment and the disintegration of D-listers!
Arthur wrote: "No offence but I'm the type of person who doesn't want to see any brain-intensive shows when coming home from a day of work. That's why I find shows such as Hole In The Wall & The Strip entertaining week in, week out."
Hey Arthur don't get me wrong I'm all for a bit of light relief at the end of the day...nudge nudge... but HOLE IN THE WALL is just mind numbing - its just so repetitive and how many dumb shapes and dunks in the pool can one show sustain.
I am perplexed that so many people watch but it may have something to do with what little else is on offer in this timeslot.
Its like watching your mates at a pool party dunking and bombing each other as the prawns hit the barbie - every 6 months or so after a few beers it can be mildly entertaining - every wednesday night for 30 minutes in prime time its just jaw droppingly boring!
I don't know whether to be proud or ashamed that my initials are now part of the Tribal Mind lexicon (for this week, at any rate). It's obviously not a good thing to be considered tqd-worthy, and that's putting my faith in my taste in doubt. ;)
Caught up on about three eps of Doctor Who last night - I've now finally seen the episodes set in The Library, and thought them some of the best Doctor Who I've ever seen. And the Agatha Christie one, too! I was a happy little bookworm!
Quoth Tribal Mind: If you liked Hole In The Wall, you'll love Mummy 3.
So I've heard. Not happy, Jan. I wanted to like Mummy 3, but I doubt I'll stir off the sofa for it on the big screen now I've heard too many negative comments from people I trust.
And may I also say: If you liked Hole In The Wall, you'll love Twilight.
Quoth em on September 12, 2008 at 09:50 AM: "If you want something a bit grittier I highly recommend "We need to talk about Kevin" by Lionel Shirver. It's one book that is not easy to forget."
A "bit" grittier? Is that like saying the Pope is a "bit" Catholic?
I thought "We Need to Talk About Kevin" was one of the BEST books I've read this decade, but I'm not recommending it to anyone without large warnings about its potential upsettingness.
Oh, while we've moved over to books (sorry for the hijack, Mr Dale), has anyone seen any of the TV series based on the Harry Dresden case files (written by Jim Butcher)? Google/Wikipedia tells me the TV series is called "The Dresden Files". The books are rather fun, sort of supernatural crime. (It'll probably go straight to Pay TV, or to 10HD. I *need* a HD set-top box. I can't believe I'm missing Battlestar Galactica...)
Tribal Mind tries desperately to drag the topic a bit closer to popular culture: If you're going to the movies, the only thing to see at the moment is 'In Bruges'. Violent and hilarious.
I say, Arthur.......
no offence but your comment regarding 'Hole in the Wall' brings to mind Homer Simpson & the mechanical drinking bird scenario -
i.e: "Wait a minute, what's he doing? He's drinking the water!!!! Heeheehee.. and he's going back for more!!! Heeheehee....This is the greatest invention the world has ever seen!!!! Heeheehee ....and he's still thirsty!!! Up...down...up...down...up...down...up.....down...up...down...up...down...up...down...Heeheehee."
The host was unexpectedly forced to face the wall and got dunked you say? Hahaha.... .stop!....no really!......heeheehee..... enough! My sides are aching.
Tribal Mind remarks: Deal or No Deal is clearly the inspiration for Hole in the Wall.
em and Shoopie - thanks for the info about Twilight.
TM - am insulted you think I watch Hole in the Wall, please credit me with a small amount of taste and discernment in my TV viewing.
TM responds: I never said that. I was using "you" as a less pretentious form of "one".
Boy "prime time" tv must be getting boring if books & sewing are getting us excited!! Then again last night we watched a couple of shows previously recorded then ABC2 Paralympics (which are really inspiring) Brain-intensive shows are really necessary, especially the older you get!!
em...couldn't agree more about "we need to talk about Kevin.
TM - I will accept your popular culture attempt and concur on In Bruges - although hilarious is not quite the word - not hysterical laughter but a very worthy film and violent is very true!
Also despite to hit and miss reviews I did see Taken with Liam Neeson last weekend and thought it was quite good although my friend was very concerned about his bad haircut.
One of my favourites of recent times was The Bank Job.
Darren what are you sniffing? Your comments are as always insightful and a joy to read
Tribal Mind tries desperately to drag the topic a bit closer to popular culture: If you're going to the movies, the only thing to see at the moment is 'In Bruges'. Violent and hilarious.
Oh yes, looks like great fun! And possibly even intelligent. Will wonders never cease: fun *and* intelligent...
And what a shame that books aren't popular culture. *sigh*
Just heard a very funny story from one of my gay friends overseas who noticed we we were blogging about an Aussie show called HOLE IN THE WALL - not knowing what it was about he thought we had come full circle and had created a gay reality TV series about 'Aussie public toilet blocks!!!'
I must say the coverage of the Paralympics on ABC1 & ABC2 is excellent. I agree that the commentary is good all around because they actually love the sport and cheer on all nations. I've been watching series 1 of SeaChange on dvd, and I can't believe I missed out on it when it was on TV! It did set the standard high. I had a look at The Strip last night, and it wasn't good. The lead female investigator (Grey? - I'm not too sure) looks a lot like Melina K. from CSI with Gary Sinise. As you can see, I don't usually watch these cop shows.
I took no offence from Arthur at all, I had already said in my post that over 1 million people disagree with me, but I am on the same side as the fence as GJ. I watched the first ep out of curiousity but apart from a slight cast change & dunking Jules in the water, I can't see why it is watched week in, week out. I can understand that people want light entertainment, I adore BL for that reason.. but Hole just seems pointless. I have watched some episodes of Deal or No Deal and think that Andrew is a better host than Jules so it is a better program from that regard. I watched 5th grader last night and enjoyed it. Rove is far better & funnier on this show than he is on his namesake show, & Peter Hellier does not appear as an added bonus!
TM: Whilst this is primarily a TV viewing habit blog, do books not count as "popular culture" ... not even the one written by a UK female who had a one-night stand with Robbie Williams? If that isn't indicative of popular culture what is?
The Dresden Files started this week on Foxtel's Sci Fi station.
The first episode can be viewed at their site: http://www.scifitv.com.au/Home/
I enjoyed it and will be watching next Monday night at 7.30pm, (despite the channel not being widescreen).
Regarding Hole in the Wall, I definitely agree with the reviewer this week in the guide - that it's only amusing for about two minutes and then it's all downhill. I still haven't seen Taken Out in one sitting, but me thinks it's very mediocre - it really depends on who is on. I just saw an ad for Matilda on Channel 10. I'm sure they showed this not too long ago. They really do need to update their film collection - there are more films than Matilda, Love Actually and About A Boy.
Just watched the Oz Steelers play against Germany in Murderball. Apart from an awesome win, the ABC coverage totally tqd's on Ch 7 from a great height.
The Strip cannot be a serious cop show...they drive Nissans for petes sake.
When was the last time you got pulled over by a cop in Murano or a Maxima?
If there wasn't worst shows on (Taken Out) then this would have to be the Yasmin.
Oh, I would rather watch Pie In The Sky than Fast Ed. In small doses on Better Homes, he is just about tolerable but a whole show. Also I could be wrong but isn't it just a compilation of segments from BHG or does it just seem like it is... Pie is the sky is nice & gentle but subtly clever whereas Fast Ed just makes me want to steal Darren's supply of Lithium ..
The US FTA premiere of Fringe has aired and the ratings were not as high as they would have liked. Jury is out on why... perhaps because of stiff competition or perhaps because an early version of the episode was leaked online back in Jun08 so perhaps downloads had hurt the ratings. Perhaps TV will soon be assessed in parallel fashion like music is... downloads vs other formats
Matilda's on again? BWAH! The cops on The Strip driving Nissans? Double BWAH! I'm having visions of them driving to the scene of the crime in Tiidas and Micra divvy vans. Real crime fighters drive Chargers and Cadillacs.
To Kym: I know, Ten's film collection is sooo repetitive. How many times have I seen Bridget Jones by now?
Tribal Mind wonders: But do you watch it each time they show it? That only encourages them.

TM - Did Ice Road Truckers, yet another reality program for channel 10, rate at all or will it be picking up Yasmin to where ever it is is going to ? Ive noticed it is never in the ratings .....
Tribal Mind replies: I didn't include it because I didn't think anybody was interested. It was only shown in Sydney on Saturday, and got 120,000 viewers.
