The ratings race, updated 10 am Friday
kristy.jpg Channel Seven won Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, Channel Nine won Sunday and Thursday, and at this point in the week, Seven has 30.0 per cent of the prime time audience, to Nine's 26.1 per cent. What did we make of Nine's new crime show The Strip? Comparison with Ten's Rush?

Make Me A Supermodel looks doomed -- so much for J. Hawkins being the second-most-f---able person on Australian television (go to The Desirability Index for background). And why are people still watching Inspector Rex on the hundredth repeat? Has the nation suddenly started German lessons?

Word of mouth was clearly strong last week for Packed To The Rafters, but not yesterday for Taken Out, which is heading for Yasminland. Ten was compensated somewhat by 1.1 million viewers at 9.30pm for its new cop show Rush. Any reader want to review Rush?

Channel Ten does not exactly have a winner on its hands with its new "reality" show Taken Out, but of course word of mouth could change those numbers. See Comments, below, for a review by alert reader J Bar, whose taste is usually impeccable. Anyone else wish to offer an analysis?

The ratings race, updated 10am Monday
If Kerry Packer had been alive, there would have been boots applied to buttocks at Channel Nine last week. Packer hated missed opportunities. By opting to hold back its launch of new programs till this week, Nine handed the audience to Seven on a platter.

For the first three days of the week, it looked as if a nation had lost its remote during the Olympics and had its dial stuck on Seven, which drew 1.9 million to the new dramedy Packed to the Rafters and to City Homicide, 1.8 million to Find My Family and Border Security, and 1.7 million to The Force and RSPCA Animal Rescue. Seven's only failure was Make Me A Supermodel, whose audience of 932,000 seems to prove that you need a little more than f---ability to find success on Australian television.

The viewers Seven didn't swallow were mopped up by Ten with Australian Idol (1.4 million). The best that Nine could manage was 1.4 million for Australia's Naughtiest Home Video Show, an ancient work of art which Kerry Packer had pulled off air back in 1992. The original host, Doug Mulray, was replaced this time by the more f---able Bert Newton.

The ABC again triumphed with Spicks and Specks (1.3 million) and managed 1 million for its weekday news and for Dr Who. SBS drew 736,000 to an old series of Top Gear. On Pay TV, NRL Knights v Storm (Fox Sports 2) drew 277,000, Project Runway Australia (Arena) drew 204,000 and Family Guy (Fox 8) drew 187,000.

Four weeks ago Seven was neck and neck with Nine. As a result of the first week after the Olympics, the prime time audience shares for the year (excluding all Olympic days) stand at: Seven 27.8 per cent, Nine 27.6, Ten 21.5, ABC 17.3 and SBS 5.8. That sound you hear is Kerry spinning.

But then again, Seven's strategy of moving its ratings behemoth Dancing With The Stars to Sunday night to take on Nine's perennial winner 60 Minutes seems to have been misconceived. On Sunday night DWTS was down half a million on its usual seasonal opening figure, battered not only by the tickers but by Aus Idol and Dr Who. How long before Seven moves the dancers back to Tuesday?

COMMENTS

Welcome back TM. I thought you were in trouble given all the controversies at Fairfax last week. Can you post the audiences for Friday (August 29) and Saturday (August 30) please? Thank you.

Tribal Mind replies: I was on strike until now, apart from meeting legally enforcable contractual obligations. You will find the ratings you want at last week's blog.

  • by Johnson on September 01, 2008 at 09:14 AM

Sundays is a hugely competitive night now and the old shows did well to keep most of the audience from the added competition. I think DWTS and Australian Idol are suffering from having some of their audiences having to decide between watching one show over the other. Both Ch 7 and Ch 10 did better compared to a few weeks ago but either of those shows could do bigger numbers on another night. In the end, 60 Minutes didn't suffer too much from having some of the viewers migrate over to DWTS. Doctor Who and Rove were also still strong too. The Outdoor Room was bad news for Thank God You're Here repeats but didn't dent Domestic Blitz a lot. It's not a bad concept though and is a bit different from other renovation shows, so it could go up in viewers if word spreads.
Scorched could have had a massive audience if it had screened a few weeks ago without so much competition or on a different night. It was beaten by everything except Rove. Bad programming I reckon. Rather than move DWTS back to Tuesdays, which has strong programming now, maybe Ch 7 should consider moving it to another night like Wednesday or Thursday.

  • by J Bar on September 01, 2008 at 09:39 AM

Accidentally watched a few seconds of DWTS - waited to see who was hosting as I had forgotten. Yes, he's pretty but...
Re Darren and his fishy bicycle - over to you Bereft.
I think John Nettles is aging as well as I am ...

  • by Shoopie on September 01, 2008 at 09:49 AM

7 will probably keep DWTS on Sundays as a) it has nothing else against 60 Minutes & b) it needs to stem the thumping they get from Nein on Sundays.
Also on last week's stuff, I was shocked to see Ugly Betty go so bad (

  • by arthur on September 01, 2008 at 09:53 AM

Doctor Who held its 1 Million (in fact was up on the previous week). And another 4 millions watched the other 3 offerings. Where did they all come from?
Poor showing for AusIdol, even though they'd tried to play up some conflict with some contestants in the media that day. Is that the death rattle I can hear?

  • by Bereft Skerrick on September 01, 2008 at 10:21 AM

Low numbers for DWTS but what else would have kept the night close given the strength of Ch 9 & 2. 7 will probably be on level pegging with 9 for the week after tonight.

  • by Michael on September 01, 2008 at 10:24 AM

Interested to see that Dr Who held most of its numbers up against the extra competition. Sunday night seems to suit its audience. For those of you who will watch it next week and think it a little strange some context might help. The week the episode aired in the U.K. some much argued against tightening of the already powerful "terror" laws passed through parliament which amongst other things doubled the time a 'terror suspect' could be detained without charges. At the end of the episode it ought to be fairly clear what side of the argument RTD would come down on.
Watched James May's 20th Century and found it nice easy non brain straining Sunday night television.
Pleased to note my theory that Domestic Blitz would rate far better in Sydney than in Melbourne (particularly in comparison to the differences for Durie's show) was right. Lauren Huxley and her story would be far better known in Sydney than Melbourne.

  • by Cat on September 01, 2008 at 10:25 AM

darren, I forgot: "A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle" -- Gloria Steinem
Damnation! Forgot 20th Century was on! Did accidentally remember to watch Dexter. Have missed the last 2 weeks but luckily it seems I missed not much.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on September 01, 2008 at 11:06 AM

Good to see DWTS down in the ratings. I know it's the done thing to bash Daryl Somers around these parts, but I'm sure his absence was a major reason for its low numbers. He was an excellent host and that new dweeb they've got is a terrible replacement.

  • by Fielding on September 01, 2008 at 11:10 AM

TM: (by the way, solidarity and all that): just wondering, if it's anywhere in the charts, did anyone watch the repeated doco on ABC yesterday about Roald Dahl (at 3 pm)? I know repeats (Border Security, Two & a Half Men) are the new DWTS for some people but maybe not for ABC people. Good show though. Childhood memories for everyone.

Bereft Skerrick & Shoopie, thanks but still in the dark. Can you explain imagining you are speaking to a five-year-old? I get the fish / bike thing (fish don't need bikes, right? Women don't need men, goes without saying. Mow your own lawns.), but why doesn't a jury need ME? I'm NEEDWORTHY dammit. Otherwise I'll have to go look up this Gloria Steinem person (hairy-legged feminist no doubt) but the G and the S keys are right over there. Too far away.
Re: DWTS, I think the whole concept's been stuffed by SYTYCD. Briefly saw Red Symons trying to do the Foxtrot (you might like to try bending, Red) and next to the SYTYCD kiddies........not good. Only reason to tune in is to see 'celebrities' embarrass themselves & we've got 'Hole in the Wall' for that now.

Tribal Mind replies: Roald Dahl got 297,000, which is pretty good for that time of day on ABC -- better than the biffo gets on Pay TV.

  • by darren on September 01, 2008 at 11:28 AM

Wonderful News Everyone! Apparently Clarkson & The Hamster are bringing some sort of Top Gear stage show to Australia! Who's going to join me at the front of the queue?

  • by Bereft Skerrick on September 01, 2008 at 12:11 PM

Glad to see the Doc still holding his own in the ratings against all the competition on Sun nights now. I suppose DWTS viewers were split between that and Idol. Wonder how Idol will go over the weeks ahead. I have never been a fan of DWTS so wont ever watch even when the Doc finishes its season. As for Idol dont think I can get interested anymore. I am a bit over it.
Recorded Scorched to view at a later date as I was curious to see it. Anyone on here saw it and if so what did you think?

  • by em on September 01, 2008 at 12:58 PM

Who thinks the lower numbers for DWTS was due to the absence of Daryl Somers? Fielding, I respectfully disagree - for a change the show finished when it was supposed to, did not have fawning and very silly jokes which fall flat. The lower numbers may have had more to do with the options available for the viewer, and perhaps a lack of interest in the "stars" on offer...
Was not the worst thing to watch. I think they will persist with it on Sundays for now. Although SBS have a new series of "Who do you think you are" starting this week - with Jeremy Irons
7 really have the rethink their Thursday night strategy as it is by far their worst night - don't quite know what but for me - anyhting but football is a start!

  • by Cathy on September 01, 2008 at 02:14 PM

Darren you may be needworthy and lets face it would more than likely raise the IQ of juries eveywhere BUT we are glad you were not subjected to endless Nein all the time, whilst serving the courts!!

  • by Cathy on September 01, 2008 at 02:55 PM

Bereft wrote: Wonderful News Everyone! Apparently Clarkson & The Hamster are bringing some sort of Top Gear stage show to Australia! Who's going to join me at the front of the queue?
Me and I suspect several of my significant others!
Darren as I was not one of those who made the original observation I am being impertinent in interpreting why you would not be the best fit for a jury but that has never stopped me before. I speak as someone who it was once observed would bring a similar weakness to a jury (and staff meetings) - you are a smart-arse. We love a good smart-arse here. Would be lost without them in fact but the tendency of smart-arses to provide a running commentary might prove somewhat distracting and slow the process of justice down somewhat. An old boss once gave me Kaz Cooke's Little Book of Crap when I left the job because of my habit of punctuating the teleconferences with that word. As he said I provided the others with a vicarious outlet but did not actually end the crap any sooner. The sight of your fellow jurors giggling would probably lead to calls for a mistrial faster than ACA or TT could seek to hunt out the miscreant who bought the massively important and expensive hearing to a close.
Oh thanks David for the Africa thing. I will have a look at the ABS myself as I am curious and save you the hassle.

  • by Cat on September 01, 2008 at 03:08 PM

A new series of Who Do You Think You Are? started on SBS last night. Why wasn't I told?

Tribal Mind replies: You are supposed to tell US these things!

  • by J Bar on September 01, 2008 at 03:31 PM

What constitutes a HD programe??
Does it have to be produced in HD or can it be made in SD and upconverted to HD.
Are the networks telling the truth when they announce that a programe is in Hd when it is in fact made in SD and upconverted

Myself and Mr Beckala shall also be in line for Top Gear Live!! Anyone heard any ticketing details yet? I tried both ticketek and ticketmaster (secretly hoping for ticketmaster because I have a friend who works for them) and no details as yet.
I actually enjoyed Scorched last night, and felt they were unlucky to not get a bigger audience - the big two reality juggernauts, as well as ABC's offerings were too much for it. I thought it was very well put together, and the research was very well done (Mr Beckala has involvement with the NSW Fire Brigades in his public servant life, so he was sitting there saying "yep, that's true)
Must add though, my brother in law is part of the online content (was hired to shoot a few pieces as a "Conrad Chalmers", a school student from 2012 who is doing research on water and rain). So I was hoping it would be good, but yet I wasn't expecting it. I, as always, was cynical about Australian drama doing well, it can let you down which has happened so many times before.

  • by Beckala on September 01, 2008 at 06:04 PM

  • by Jimbo on September 01, 2008 at 07:10 PM

Watched Idol last night. What was I thinking? Anyhow, if that is the best talent we have then we are in a lot of trouble. There was only one singer I thought worth watching and that was the rocker guy at the end. I dont know that I can bare to put myself through it again so dont think I will be watching tonight. Maybe I will record it so I can fast forward through any singer I dont like. And as for Ricky Lee, why is she there? She contributed nothing to the show just sat there with a few inane comments. Really they only need one host. Andrew G does the job well enough. It isnt rocket science you know , Ten! 3 hosts is definitely overkill. As for the judges it is just the same old, same old. My verdict of Idol? Boring, tired and lame.

  • by em on September 02, 2008 at 08:16 AM

I watched the first episode of 'Taken Out' last night expecting it to be some sort of car crash but I was actually surprised about how funny the show was. There were some cringeworthy moments but James Kerley is a brilliant host and his interactions with the contestants was brilliant. He was pretty good with cracking some funny jokes right on the spot and is definitely a talent Ch 10 should secure. Could 'Taken Out' become a hit like 'Perfect Match' was all those years ago?
Jimbo, I realise it was the British version of WDYTYA on SBS but I enjoy that one too. I haven't been watching much SBS lately and hadn't seen any publicity, so I didn't know anything about it until one of my workmates mentioned it. Surprising because there had been so much publicity for the first British series that they had shown.

  • by J Bar on September 02, 2008 at 08:42 AM

I was going to ask if anyone knows when Ten are planning to finish showing 'Friends'? After showing the whole series from the beginning they're going to stop now, with what, maybe five episodes to go, to make a space for that dating service for slappers & yobbos that is 'Taken Out'? But having seen a few minutes of 'Taken Out' last night, I think 'Friends' will be back shortly. 'Taken Out' needs to be Taken Out the back & shot , hahahahaha (I think that joke's been done already hasn't it?).
Cat, thanks (I think) for clearing that up (so brutally) and confirming what I've been suspecting for quite a while. Im not sure whether to do a Sally Field ("You think I'm a smart-arse? You really think I'm a smart-arse?") and embrace my inner smart-arse (if I can bend that far) or just stop burrowing into that whole psycologically booby-trapped hole ("They think I'm a smart-arse? They really think I'm a smart-arse?") right now & get back to whining about crap TV. It's nice to know I'm among fellow smart-arses and smart-arse aspirants though. It's like smart-arse central in here. Smart-arse, smart-arse, smart-arse.

  • by darren on September 02, 2008 at 08:44 AM

J Bar, Sorry but I saw part of Taken Out last night . I dont think we were watching the same show. I have to agree with Darren. Taken Out should be! What absolute garbage! Back to household chores at 7 pm for me. Much more entertaining.
BTW did anyone else see City Homicide last night? Craig Mclachlan looks to have done a Bert and now has a shiny plastic face. How lovely!

South Coast Smart Arse reporting in to ask how The Da Vinci Code went last night. Obviously not in the top 11.
Didn't watch Taken Out (TV at work was broken, actually doing what I'm there to do, instead of smart arsing about here) but 851K = short term wonder. Does anyone remember what Yasmin was getting?
darren: I think that Ch Shirl might not have the rights to the final season of Friends (which ended in 2004), because I have seen Nein playing some episodes. Perhaps they can only play once the rights expire.
Speaking of smart arses, more info about the Top Gear tour in early February 09 can be found here: http://www.topgear.com/content/news/stories/3183/

Anyone replies: If you go to the Tribal Mind archive which runs down the right side of your screen -- a sadly under-utilised resource -- you find that this column wrote, on August 6, 2006: "Yasmin's Getting Married started on Tuesday and lasted until Friday, opening with 778,000 viewers in the mainland capitals and ending with 510,000." So Taken Out has a bit further to fall.
Da Vinci Code got 917,000. What does this information signify?

Jimbo wrote: the new series of Who Do Yo Thibk You Are? is not the Australian's new series. It's the English Series
Ahh but I would much rather watch Jeremy Irons on Who Do You Think You Are than Eddie McGuire.
Darren wear it as a badge of honour and go back to doing what you do best. By the way the comment by my old boss that I identified the fact of the crap without ending the crap is my philosophy in coming here. I feel better after commenting on the crap but have absolutely no allusions it is going to end.
Oh and Nine I have actually added 4 new shows to my viewing list this week and there are still none of your shows on it. Have you got anything else on offer?

Tribal Mind remarks: "absolutely no allusions"? See comment re Dorrie from Number 96 in this week's Tribal Mind blog. Sorry I have to cast nasturtiums.

I bet Ch 9 is starting to regret giving Ch 7 a free kick last week. The Olympics glow may have gone but the Monday night ratings were still huge for Ch 7 shows. Movies in prime time on free to air don't work any more, even with blockbusters like The Da Vinci Code. I noticed Boston Legal at 10.30pm did better than the second episode of Burn Notice at 9.30pm. And Top Gear on SBS did better than both eps of Burn Notice.

  • by J Bar on September 02, 2008 at 11:01 AM

re Craig McLachlan: methinks it is the thick neck that makes him look a bit like a ken doll - what I found unbelievable was he was meant to be a lawyer... although the homage to Eddie Everywhere was obvious...
Cat - I too am with you on the no Nein all the time viewing - they seem to be focussed on 2.5 men and 20 to or 50 to or whatever to 1 -
I added a couple of new shows to the list including Who Do You Think You Are - missed the first ep - drat - and SBS does not do the ABC repeating or iview option! I am recording Rush to see what it is like - although I do think Catherine McClements has paid the devil or Dorian Grey to maintain the same look as Water Rats

i thought 'Taken out' was pretty good, should have gone for an hr though

Tribal Mind remarks: "absolutely no allusions"? See comment re Dorrie from Number 96 in this week's Tribal Mind blog. Sorry I have to cast nasturtiums.

Yeah I know - I realised afterwards but to be totally honest my mind was far afield (shootings in New Jersey to be precise). Besides given some of the typos here you are being a little harsh. I will give up reading before I post altogether now.
Thanks for the link to Top Gear Live Bereft. Let us just hope they consider us part of the world given their general opinions on Australian cars.

Tribal Mind replies: But I expect a higher standard from some bloggers.

  • by Cat on September 02, 2008 at 11:44 AM

"Da Vinci Code got 917,000. What does this information signify?"
It signifies that Nein will pull the Monday Night movie. And they have. Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares is back next week. Fast Tracked. Dog help us.
851K is only 10% more that what Yasmin got first night in. Only time will tell.
Big ratings expected for All Saints tonight - apparently there's a tribute for Mark Priestly on before and after the show tonight.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on September 02, 2008 at 11:51 AM

Put me down for 2 in the queue.Big numbers for Top Gear again even if it is 5+ years old. It must have been the last time James May had a haircut!! Denton with Bill Bailey was good & the interview with 3 "foster carers" was handled well as usual by Denton. The new series of "Who do you think you are?" on SBS started on Sun - a "knighted" rower from 4 Olympics but not Redgrave, recorded for later in the week watching. If I ever get to England I'm definitely not going to the town of Midsomer - has to be the murder capital of the world !!

UGLY BETTY and T&S UNDRESS THE NATION are gone from Seven's Thursday line up. this Thursday will have (Syd & Bris only):
8.30 Ghost Whisperer (2eps)
10.20 Family Guy
10.50 American Dad! (new)
11.20 Beauty & The Geek
In Melb, Adel & Perth:
7pm Home & Away
8pm MMAS
9pm Ghost Whisperer
10.50 Family Guy
11.20 Beauty & The Geek
There is a HOME & AWAY double on Thursday because on Friday BETTER HOMES will start at 7pm followed by the AFL at 8pm.
as far as I'm concerned, for a program to be in High Definition it has to be filmed in High Definition (or remastered in HD such as THE X-FILES).
I'm very disappointed by BURN NOTICE's figures - it needs to be moved to a less competitive timeslot/night. BOSTON LEGAL should be getting at least 600,000. Though, it is still higher than last week's audience which is a good sign.

  • by cpandilo on September 02, 2008 at 12:12 PM

I wondered why Ch7 had moved Bones from Thursday to Monday as it was the only decent show that they aired on Thursday but in moving it, they seem to have done it a favour. It is rating so much better. So does that mean people choose the station to watch by the night of the week rather than the shows? E.g. Thursday so I will watch Ch 9? Or that the lead-on show on Thursday is all powerful? To J Bar - Boston Legal: Last night's ep was wonderful, so typical of BL in all its glory, worthy of rating well... So sad that the upcoming season in the US will be its last :(

  • by kate on September 02, 2008 at 12:16 PM

I'm so excited - I've actually found a program on nein that I'm going to watch!
Will nein still be on the dial after all these months?
What is it?
Billie Piper's Secret Diary of a Call Girl. Tonight! All new!
At 10.30pm no less! Should rate well haha.

  • by Sal on September 02, 2008 at 12:17 PM

'Taken Out' might be a dating service for slappers & yobbos but that's partly why I found it so funny. Remember, 'Big Brother' was a show about 'bogans and scrags' and that was very successful for the first five years (and dragged on for a further three less successful years). I'm not saying that it's a show I would go out of my way to watch but it was highly amusing, thanks to James Kerley, and I can see the potential if Ch 10 can drag enough viewers away from the unfunny 2.5 Men and melodramatic Home & Away.

  • by J Bar on September 02, 2008 at 01:01 PM

Bereft, Nine didn't pull the Monday Night Movie. The return to normal programming next Monday night was always intended by Nine.

  • by cpandilo on September 02, 2008 at 01:54 PM

J Bar,
Re: 'Taken Out'. To be serious (for a few seconds), I can see what you're saying. It has some potential I guess. James Kurley was okay. But I think it's all relative. E.g: I remember thinking that the last few series of 'Friends' was pretty average, but I think at the time I was comparing it to 'Seinfeld'. Now, comparing it to say..'Two & a Half Men' or ''Til Death', it's sitcom GOLD.
James Kurley is okay in the same way that the two 'Johns' ("What did you think of that John?" "I thought that was hilarious John.") on 'Wipeout' are okay but it's hardly what you would call quality.
The other thing is, as you say, it's funny to watch scrags & rednecks & yobbos & slappers make fools of themselves but relying on natural-born fools for actual intelligent humour is never gonna work. It depends on your expectations. And all the networks seem to be doing their darndest to lower them.

  • by darren on September 02, 2008 at 02:28 PM

Taken Out is actually OK. But it will never work in the 7pm timeslot, not while Home & Away is on. It appeals to the exact same demographic, and people won't stop watching H&A.

  • by DragonLass on September 02, 2008 at 06:11 PM

Read elsewhere in the Herald that SBS are looking to increase their funding so they can essentially copy ABC who is copying BBC with more than one digitial channel and specialized children's channels, plus more than one radio station... So should the government increase their funding by 70m to 258m or so...? What do fellow bloggers think? Apart from the Olympic overflow, Top Gear and Who Do You Think... do they have enough audience to justify such an expansion... Or is it the large expansion that will give them a larger audience?
Final question: Does it also mean that despite ruining its original indie status & existing shows with ads, that corporate Australia will do not pay enough to SBS?

  • by kate on September 02, 2008 at 07:16 PM

Taken out was interesting and a good gamble by 10 seen as tho the last dating show was Yasmin's Getting Married.
I found it quite funny at times and see there format as workable. As said previously, puting it up against home and away was not the best idea but where else would it best be placed ? Its not strong enough for a 7.30 time slot nor 8.30. Possible a late night option ? Personaly id rather it on once a week for an hour than weekly for half an hour. Kerley seems the right fit for 10, he's miles better than thos Oz idol personalities. Seems free to air channels keep stealing pay tv hosts. Im waiting for music max's "The Know" to be shown on a free to air network.

  • by Matt on September 02, 2008 at 09:35 PM

I watched Taken Out last night - car crash tv. It was awful, I knew it was awful, but I couldn't look away. The most amusing part (for me) was looking at the little blurbs underneath each person, describing their dating philosophy. My personal favourite one was one girl who "wants to be a Pussycat Doll". She looked like she was about 45 years old, she's a few years too late!

  • by Beckala on September 03, 2008 at 06:55 AM

i have been wondering what nein could do to bring me in as a viewer and i have come up with a great idea for a series about a trailer trash momma in alaska who beats the odds by starting out as a teenage mom and ends up the ak47 toting governor mom of a teenage mom but that is not what makes it a trailer trash story it is naming the kids trig track bristol piper willow then laughing at a woman with cancer being called a bitch and a cancer and then fighting with the slimeball ex brother in law using the unconventional weapons of gubernatorial power and a beehive nah no one would believe it still reading i would have thought i would have lost you back at trig track typing without punctuation is actually remarkably hard

If you go to the Top Gear Live show in Sydney Bereft do not be surprised if before it starts someone yells "Hey Bereft" in a really thick accent. I would give you a shout too PJ453 but I have never been good with numbers.

  • by Cat on September 03, 2008 at 08:04 AM

I quite like Taken Out. A good bit of fluff to switch off too when you get home from work. Can't stand H&A or 2 & a Half Men and don't want to watch the news so it's a good alternative.

As for Rush, I won't be watching it again. What a load of c**p. Bad acting, bad script and what was with the back ground music?

  • by Nic on September 03, 2008 at 08:09 AM

Taken Out was quality in that "Jesus H Christ look at these people" kind of way...and the host was spot-on I reckon. But the other bloggers are right - it's never going to look the goods ratings-wise against Home and Away. What about a 6pm slot instead

  • by NK on September 03, 2008 at 08:42 AM

Happy to see Taken Out start to go into Yasmin territory. Didn't bother with Rush as it was in too late a timeslot. Will wait for The Strip on Thursday instead which from the ads appears much more slickly produced.

Wonder how Hole In The Wall will do tonite?

  • by arthur on September 03, 2008 at 09:02 AM

Huge numbers for Packed to the Rafters. I must say I am enjoyng the show, which is solidly acted and deals with Aussie issues. I would choose a good Aussie program any day of the week.

Surely Ch 10 could have found somewhere else in their schedule to show Rush. Ch 9 needs to find some programs, as they appear to have front loaded their schedule and now have nothing left.

  • by Michael on September 03, 2008 at 09:03 AM

Ye dogs, did anyone else watch Secret Diary of a Call Girl? I had to watch the whole lot just to make sure it was as bad as I first thought. What next for Nein - Debbie Does Dallas?
And what is it with 20 to 1? I guess the whole premise could be interesting but why do we need the to hear the opinions of various "celebrities" on each thing in the list? And who decides the top 20 anyway?

  • by Shoopie on September 03, 2008 at 09:08 AM

Absolutely brilliant effort from Packed To The Rafters. Even higher than the debut so this is definitely going to be a hit. Awesome effort by All Saints to have the same viewers at 9.30 as it did when it was on at 8.30. John Howard was very moved, delivering the tribute to Mark Priestley at the end. It was a very good episode too, especially the story involving the leukaemia patient reunited with his parents who had given him up for adoption at birth. As usual they had great acting and great stories on All Saints.
Rush actually did a bit better than I expected. I still think they could have had a massive debut if they had shown it on Wednesdays, away from All Saints. I had to tape it and watch it at 10.30. It wasn't a brilliant first episode but it was alright. There was a lot of action and drama and not nearly enough character establishment. I thought the opening chase scenes with the 'spider man' threw you straight into it but it became exhausting having so much drama by the end of the episode. Quite unrealstic that they would be involved in so many high profile call-outs in one day and you never see them do any paperwork. Too much aggro between the characters makes it difficult to like them and this show went close to having aggro between almost all the characters. I think it's important to make the characters likeable and if they don't like each other, then it makes it hard for the audience to like them too. There were a couple of good relationships between the characters but they need to build those up more. I have a feeling it might go down in the ratings next week.
Not good news for Taken Out which dropped on its second night. It should have done heaps better considering it is sandwiched between Neighbours on 897,000 and Australian Idol on 1,249,000.

  • by J Bar on September 03, 2008 at 09:50 AM

Huge ratings for Packed to the Rafters. Was rather surprised it rated so high but it isnt a bad show. Saw a bit of Idol again last night. My God, the talent is quite woeful. I have seen better singers at Karoke night at the local RSL. As for the standard young 16 yr old cute boy, he will get the little girl vote but really, he cant sing. Not good, Ten. And the more I see of Ricky Lee the more I want to grab the remote. Ughhh!!!
Shoopie, I recorded Secret Diary of a Call Girl so I will let you know my views when I get a chance to watch it.

  • by em on September 03, 2008 at 09:58 AM

TV Tonight have an article on fast tracking of overseas shows by Aus networks, but it appears they haven't really learnt all that much from doing it so far (in terms of making it work) and the massively huge downloading that occurs in this country (that makes Aussies the 2nd highest downloaders in the world) will still continue.
http://www.tvtonight.com.au/2008/09/tim-worner-fasttracking-one-year-on.html
If 90210 episodes are screened over this year's summer recess, Ten should benefit from fast tracking that series, but most Aus viewers probably couldn't care less either way to see that show's episodes ASAP. Nine are admirably intending to fast track the
X-Files rip off show 'Fringe', a week after it's North American debut, but I suspect it's sci-fi elements may not make it appeal to Nine's bogan audience and it'll probably be moved to a 10.30 pm timeslot.

  • by Chris on September 03, 2008 at 10:26 AM

Cat,
What Big Book of Baby Names has Sarah Palin been reading? Reminds me of Kath & Kim considering 'Enaema' as a name before settling on 'Eppinee'.
Read the article in the SMH about the future son-in-law 'Levi' who listed his hobbies on his Facebook site as 'f**kin' shootin' sh*t and stuff. And calls himself 'a f**kin' redneck. F**kin' mess with me and I'll f**kin' whoop you ass.' (or something like that). You couldn't write this stuff.
Can't wait to find out what happens next. I think John McCain dies at his inauguration & Moose-burger Mom moves into the Whitehouse with hilarious results ("Levi, you & Bristol can have the big round room. Me & Daddy'll hunker down in the Rose Garden. I think the trailer'll fit through them big ol' gates. Yee-ha.")
Could happen.

  • by darren on September 03, 2008 at 11:31 AM

JBar's comments remind me of 24. Each episode reprenesented an hour, but when did you see any of the characters say "Sorry, but if i don't have lunch now, I'm not going to be able to run the upgrade so that the software can help us run the program to defuse the terrorists" or as the camera splits into four to show several characters doing things concurrently, one of them is not stuck in the loo. Now that would be realism.

  • by Scriptwriter on September 03, 2008 at 01:13 PM

Wow!
Channel 7 is rating well!
Look at the difference between Ch 7 and Ch 9 News especially in Sydney!
Glad to see Wipeout and 2 and a half men rating poorly - Will be interesting to see how Hole in the Wall goes...
I think 7 will win the year now...

  • by James on September 03, 2008 at 02:52 PM

Oh dear. I watched Secret Diary of a Call Girl.
It was on nein, why did I not understand that it would be trash? I won't be back.
Shudder.
Saw a bit of Bert in 20 to 1 as it was on before Secret Diary.
I now understand all the comments I've been reading here about Bert. The poor man, what has happened to his face?
And his voice - he spoke so.... carefully.
Yep, time to retire.

  • by Sal on September 03, 2008 at 03:10 PM

Shoopie - I am glad someone else has voiced my concerns about the "celebrities" on 20 to 1 style. I think the idea is not too bad (although overdone by 9 now) but just do not understand why some celebrities are commenting on things. Fair enough if you were a musician and comment on influential songs, but here it is 9 employees and desperate celebs.
Darren - I concur regarding the Republican VP nomination - the children's names! Anyway it will be a fun ride to the US elections.
I too saw some of Secret Diary of Call Girl while channel surfing. Billie Piper was not a strong actor on Dr Who, and she had the Doctors to carry her. This the few seconds (seemed like hours) I saw the couple of times I flicked past were just awful.
Good to see Aust drama doing so well on 7. City Homicide was great - nearly fell off my chair when I saw the colours that the footy team were wearing - even their mascot looked a bit like Collingwood's.
I too thought that John Howard sounded quite emotional speaking about Mark Priestly. It was quite sad watching him in the episode.
Looking forward to Wire in the Blood on Friday night!

  • by Louise on September 03, 2008 at 04:54 PM

Quoth darren: "You couldn't write this stuff. "
No, don't say that! That's just fuel for network executives to commission yet another round of "reality" TV, instead of actually investing in some well written drama!
As a hairy-legged feminist myself, I am a bit "whoohoo, a (potential) female Vice President", but I am mostly "oh dear ghod, no...".

  • by tqd on September 03, 2008 at 08:29 PM

Heck my comment from earlier today got eaten. Probably Ch Nein heard that I called "Call Girl" PORN. That's right. PORN. There were no visible wobbly bits but the other 9 Doctors (ok perhaps not Nine) would be horrified. Prude mode now off.
Cat: I promise that if I make it to the live Top Gear show I'll bring a large sign with "BEREFT" with an arrow pointing down so you can see where I'm sitting.
Saw All Saints and John Howard (the actor) at the end with his hearfelt message about Lifeline. You couldn't make the emotion in his voice up. Hope that some good comes from tragedy.
It's interesting watching this Presidential race from afar. I recall that the daughters of George W Gump were a couple of party girls - think they got done for underage drinking etc. However they were the offspring of the incumbent and have generally been portrayed in a favourable light.
However Brandine from Alaska (I've seen a photoshopped picture of her wearing a stars and strips bikini and holding a shotgun - here's the linky - http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/6033/palinqueenmt8.jpg) brings an interesting bent to proceedings, and in this celebrity-hungry world everyone is fair game. Even rednecks who knock up VP candidates daughters.

Tribal Mind remarks ... but not good porn. Where's the nudity?

  • by Bereft Skerrick on September 03, 2008 at 11:06 PM

Tqd,
I was actually hoping that writers might just take a bit of inspiration from this unbelievable development. It's the funniest thing on TV by far. The writers of 'The West Wing' came up with CJ talking to BigBird but a Moose-killin' bee-hive-hairdoed pro-gun pro-lifer with children named after dulux paint samples & a daughter aspiring to be the Britney (that anti sex-education in schools really paid off didn't it?) of Pennsylvania Avenue? They would've thought it too ridiculous.
I nominate Tina Fey (TM:"Noooooo") for the lead role in the upcoming movie. Lindsay Lohan as Bristol (it'll be a 'Mean Girls' reunion). Leslie Nielsen as John McCain. Chris Rock as Obama (his lines consisting mainly of "I can't believe it, hahahahaha, I can't believe it".)

  • by darren on September 04, 2008 at 05:55 AM

Having finally gotten around to watching the Secret Diary of a Call Girl I have to agree with others here. What a lot of trash, soft porn really and no story. Will give that a miss in future.

And to follow on from comments here, I have to say God help the world if McCain becomes president with "trailer trash" for a VP. Imagine Palin as Pres? I shudder at the thought! And what a charmer her future son-in-law is. Only in America!

  • by em on September 04, 2008 at 07:52 AM

Darren I thought as I said when proposing the Republican ticket as a show for nein that no one would believe it but have decided I was wrong - yes they would. Given the ratings for Hole in the Wall etc it is hard to put anything past Australian viewers. It would be hard to write it better than they can though - the sight of McCain checking out Palin's arse on stage had me envisioning Bill Clinton diving on stage and wrestling McCain to the ground whilst shouting "hey that's my shtick old man". Do like your idea of parking the trailer in the Rose Garden and Mom and Pop could be the first self sufficient First Family shooting squirrels and reporters on the White House lawn. If only they had named their second child Mark I would have been content.

I am heading off into the world of regional TV and I am so looking forward to my first stock report in many years. Not to mention ads for sheep dip and grain.

  • by Cat on September 04, 2008 at 08:35 AM

I have yet to see Taken Out - and better do it post-haste before it chucks a Yasmin. What another fantastic Wednesday night lineup again for ABC1. I thought Very Small Business would have a start like The Hollowmen (which got a bit better) or The Librarians (faltered a little), but it was genuinely funny and I am looking forward to a fine Australian-made Wednesday night all over again.

  • by Kym on September 04, 2008 at 09:18 AM

Kym wrote: before it chucks a Yasmin. Thank you Kym we will add that to last year's boned.
I found this article which folks here might be interested in. It talks about (from an American perspective) the conversion of shows like Kath & Kim and Life on Mars for American audiences. Quite interesting including how they are going to hide the end of LOM. Salon is an either pay or watch a 20 second ad site so if this link does not take you straight to the article (it should) just go to Salon.com

  • by Cat on September 04, 2008 at 10:09 AM

Cat have to say I loved the summary of the potential new show for nein - caused quite a few giggles at my work where there has been quite a bit of discussion and a couple of letters to the editor over the gun toting vp (and not in a good way). Darren as a 30 rock fan I look at your suggestion of Liz Lemon in the Palin role as scary (v scary indeed!).

Although I had all good intentions of recording Rush the other night I missed it - will try next week.

I do agree with Kym about The Hollowmen improving... I thought lastnight was the best effort so far.

Oh and I may be venturing into nein land in a couple of weeks - they are rumoured to be fasttracking the new JJ Abrams show - Fringe - will have a look at the reviews and have a bit of a think.

Code is all 9s - what is it trying to tell me.

  • by Cathy on September 04, 2008 at 10:10 AM

Was looking forward because I like Wayne Hope's work in Stupid, stupid man and The Librarians. There were some good bits but unfortunately Very Small Business was not Very Funny Business.

  • by J Bar on September 04, 2008 at 10:19 AM

Hole in the Wall figures were about what I expected. Richard Reid injected a fair bit of genuine humour, and the last bit where everyone but the host falls into the pool was funny (jumping the shark perhaps?). Otherwise the episode was dull.
What is Very Small Business? The only thing I know is that it was on ABC and running against Taken Out. Pardon my ignorance.
Secret Diary of a Call Girl - what were you all thinking to see that? Surely you'd know what the story was about!
Cathy - the 999999 is probably telling you to watch nein! The Strip, Fringe, etc... I'll give them a go too so long as Fringe isn't shunted into a 10.30pm timeslot haha.

Tribal Mind asks: how do you normally find out what is on tv? It's hard to imagine what else the abc could have done to publicise Very Small Business.

  • by arthur on September 04, 2008 at 10:52 AM

Cat: that was toally my view on Regional TV before I moved from Sydney nearly 6 years ago. Sheep Dip, Pest Sprays. It's not so bad on the South Coast - you can't really classify anything on the coast as "country" in my mind, you must be heading west.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on September 04, 2008 at 11:22 AM

Cat,
about your 'If they can believe 'Hole in the Wall' is good TV they'll believe anything' thing......
Heard on the radio yesterday a conspiracy theory starting with the FACT that Sandra Sully is actually a Reptilian Shape-shifting alien determined to turn the minds of viewers into jelly through force-fed Lower Common Denominator TV, all the easier for them to be conquered when the Reptilian Shape-shifting alien overlords arrive from their ancient civilisation on the Dark Side of the Moon.
These aliens also have the salamanderish ability to split & replicate & populate news rooms & Television Programming departments all over the world (Rupert Murdoch is another one, as are Eddie McGuire, Ian Ross, Lindsay Lohan, George W Bush & the latest larval hatchling, Sarah Palin, among others).
The 'theory' goes that it's these 'people' that are responsible for everything from Reality TV, to news stories on Britney, to 'Hole in the Wall' & (sorry, J Bar) 'Taken Out'. They're the THEY in 'that's what THEY say' (Gary Larson was wrong).
I'm a new believer. They're out there. Everything suddenly makes sense.

  • by darren on September 04, 2008 at 11:30 AM

A tad dissapointed with Very Small Business, but having read the earlier comments of other shows on at the same time I feel pretty safe about staying with VSB. The Hollowmen hit the nail on the head again, this time how the spin doctors are more worried about "image" than actual issues.
And as for Mrs Palin, she could be just 1 heartbeat away from pressing the button & letting off "the big one". Hopefully like the Randy Newman song it will be "Won't drop 1 on Australia, don't want to hurt no kangaroos". Then again she probably hasn't even heard of Randy Newman, so...............run away!!....run away!!

  • by PJ453 on September 04, 2008 at 11:56 AM

Replying to Cathy
Have seen the first ep of Fringe & enjoyed it. Think it might do well, the plot moves quite quickly and the production value is really high, with very slick editing and clever use of graphics. While there are storylines left open to continue throughout the series, there is enough closure in the episode to satisfy the casual viewer, unlike Lost which viewers could not "cherry-pick" episodes to view without getting lost (excuse the bad pun)

  • by kate on September 04, 2008 at 01:32 PM

Sal, Bert spoke so.... carefully. The secret is out. The TomTom SatNav system, with its vocal navigational instructions, has been modified for TV. With a bit of Computer-Generated Imagery it's now the BertBert Intro-Outro system. The real Bert is enjoying his 2nd year of retirement.
Here's hoping that SBS records the Top Gear Stage Show and that Aunty tapes Bill Bailey's Show for ABC2, they'd be fools if they didn't.
Whilst Channel surfing I watched about a minute of Secret Diary,
Oh Billie dear, the pipes, the pipes are calling
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and do something else.
(Apologies to the late Frederick Weatherly)

  • by Les on September 04, 2008 at 02:41 PM

Darren when you wrote: (about your 'If they can believe 'Hole in the Wall' is good TV they'll believe anything' thing......
Heard on the radio yesterday a conspiracy theory starting with the FACT that Sandra Sully is actually a Reptilian Shape-shifting alien ...) I was a little worried you were going to say you did not believe it. I am greatly relieved that you are au fait with the true facts of life now. I will be able to maintain my confidence in your serious and studied analyses of Australian television now!

Bereft I hail from the far west and I grew up watching sheep dip and grain ads. I had nightmares for many years about one particular wheat ad in which a man with a hand I could best describe by referring to Homer Simpson's hand (only embiggened) sunk into a huge bag of wheat. I could never work out what had happened to the poor guy's hand or what sticking it into a bag of wheat was going to do to fix it. Now I think of the late night phone sex ads and look back at the ads in the bush with nostalgia. BTW I will be keeping an eye out for the Bereft sign.

Which of the shows that we were asked to punt on being canned is doing worst so far? Is it Taken Out?

TM you were very interested in how much Billie Piper revealed in Secret Diary - were you disappointed perchance?

  • by Cat on September 04, 2008 at 03:27 PM

Arthur, yes we knew what Secret Diary was all about, but after Satisfaction (recent Australian program on Foxtel set in a brothel) we also knew that it did not need to be tacky.
Satisfaction was very well done, and I believe there will be a second season. Go Oz!
And Les - yes SatNav Bert. Of course.

"Tribal Mind asks: how do you normally find out what is on tv? It's hard to imagine what else the abc could have done to publicise Very Small Business."

Apart from view promos on the commercial tv stations, the answer is obvious. Come on here.

Tribal Mind asks: This is depressing news for the journalists who write the TV guides. And you never watch the ABC to see its promos?

To be fair I watched The Circuit last week because of The Guide. I had never heard of it before. I am taping it again today. So yes they do have some impact. My problem would be similar though if there was actually something good on nein because I have not watched it in a while to see the promos.

Third time posting in a day ... I sometimes look at the TV guide but this blog is way more convenient. And generally no, I haven't found anything on ABC remotely interesting lately apart from Good Game on ABC2. SBS I watch from time to time too.

Tribal Mind remarks: So if I want you to comment on a show, I have to promote it in advance, because you won't know it exists otherwise?

There are heaps of info on new shows from the SMH to the Network's web sites in Oz or US.Maybe some folks spend more time on other things but i have no problem keeping up to date. Just look at the D/L sites to see whats coming along. The internet is an amazing resource .Just need to reallocate some time to looking.TV Tonight, local site is very good.

The Strip had a lot not quite right about it. The show reminded me of Water Rats in some ways but with more flash and less substance. I liked the opening credits and I liked the flashy establishing shots of the Gold Coast. It’s good to have a show in a different location. But then they did go a bit overboard with using so much of it that after a while and it felt like it was a music video. Since they went with that flashy look, I don’t understand why they then decided to use the jerky, shaky camera work which is usually used in the grittier, grungier shows. It was annoying.
Most of the characters were likeable. Aaron Jeffrey, Simone McAuley, Bob Morley and Frankie J Holden were great but I think Vanessa Gray is miscast in the lead role and in some scenes her acting was definitely not up to their standard. This show should have had Aaron and Simone in the lead roles. Simone was brilliant even if they did make her like she just came from working undercover as a prostitute. The Gold Coast can be a bit tacky and trashy but do the cops need to look like that too? Bob Morley seems a bit young to be a detective but maybe that’s just because he played a much younger character in Home & Away. It seemed right for the young bloke to be so concerned about the way he looks. There was some seriously dodgy acting from the guest actors, especially the son of the surfer and the criminal at the end.
The show started off with some really corny dialogue, but it got better and then a couple of times it went back to corny territory. The story was alright but there were some massive holes in it. Why did the window cleaner only clean one window of the young girl’s apartment before moving downstairs? How did he then have time to get to the apartment below, film what was happening and for the crim to get the roof so quickly and cut the ropes? If Aaron's character and his wife just moved to the Gold Coast in the last month, why were they all so familiar with her and her reputation as prosecutor? Also, the son, the trophy wife and the cops all seemed to get a bit too close to the body at the morgue.
Not every show is great from the start, so hopefully they can improve on some of these early problems. It has potential to be a hit and it can retain viewers if they can iron out some of the flaws.

I also rely on the 'advice' of my fellow TM bloggers ;=) and as I said, sometimes the TV Guides.
Just that in the case of Very Small Business, no other blogger seemed to plug it before it was shown!
PS. The Strip was pretty good last night, coming from a devout CSI Miami fan. Let's hope it keeps the momentum.

  • by arthur on September 05, 2008 at 08:21 AM

I dont know what I was thinking last night but I tuned in to Nein's The Strip. I figured how can I bag something out if I dont watch at least once? I lasted about 20 mins then went to bed with a good book. Much more interesting. What can I say about The Strip? Blatant CSI Miami rip off? Yep, just as I expected, it is even filmed in the same way, lots of beach shots, heat haze, cops in skimpy tops etc.
And the guy from McLeods who still can't act. All in all a show that is just plain boring. Nice try, Nein, but you missed the boat with that one.

  • by em on September 05, 2008 at 08:34 AM

Cat,
yes, it was presented as a theory but for me it was as if a ray of light came out of the clouds & beamed straight down on me frowning behind the steering wheel stuck in traffic with accompanying angelic choir.
The Truth.
John McCain & Sarah Palin are really Kronos & Kang (the real-life inspiration for the aliens of the same name from the Simpsons).
I'm beginning to think the entire Republican Party is infected as well. Look closely and you'll see their eyes actually have two sets of lids, the human ones on the outside & another one of those semi-transparent slimey ones that closes cross-ways underneath.
Richard Reid is a human-Reptilian shape shifting alien hybrid who dangerously compromised his true identity appearing in a silver lycra suit on 'Hole in the Wall' the other night. You could see his groin snorkle.
It's not a theory. It's the answer to everything.

Tribal Mind remarks: The name for those inner eyelids is "nictitating" - a great word.

  • by darren on September 05, 2008 at 08:42 AM

I espected The Strip to do a lot better. Especially when you consider Sea Patrol did 2 million in that timeslot. They should have teamed up Simone McAullay with Aaron Jeffery for the lead.
Looks like Taken Out will be taken out the back and shot. Unless Ch 10 can do something miraculous or repackage it for another timeslot. That worked for Deal Or No Deal, which flopped in prime time but found success in the afternoon.

  • by J Bar on September 05, 2008 at 09:21 AM

As a Gold Coaster I was keen to check out the Strip last night, but I lasted just 20 minutes! Woeful acting (the sugar daddy suspect, whatever his name was, in particular), try hard lines and too cool for school camera shots. I can't see it maintaining 1.4M every week. Australian producers really need to learn that quality drama is all about the scripts and the acting, nothing more required. We need to stop trying to copy the Americans because they operate on stratospheric budgets which "sometimes" allows them to get away with their other shortcomings.

  • by Neil on September 05, 2008 at 09:40 AM

Does anyone know when or if 7 are bringing back Ugly Betty? It was hardly surprising it failed at 9.30pm because a lot of the devotees I know are young girls well in bed by 9.30pm. There was disappointment in our house that it was not on at least to be taped and viewed at a suitable hour.

  • by LAH on September 05, 2008 at 12:43 PM

Quoth darren on September 05, 2008 at 08:42 AM: "John McCain & Sarah Palin are really Kronos & Kang..."

KODOS: My fellow Americans. As a young boy, I dreamed of being a baseball, but tonight I say, we must move forward, not backward, upward not forward, and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom.

Ah, The Simpsons. Always the right word(s) for any situation.

(Although, I hate to nitpick, but it is "Kodos" not "Kronos", who was one of the Titans, if I am to believe Wikipedia.)

I haven't watched Taken out - and Ive only switched over to Idol for snippets of time to see how bad it was this year - I was not disappointed in my assumptions.
When i switched over there was one girl who lost her voice, but if she hadnt of lost it I thought she would have been very good, However the 'twists and turns' that Channel 10 tried to create for their applicants turned the program into nothing more than a bad reality program.
The problem is not that both shows are bad, it's just Channel 10 (the raw sewerage network) just keeps on producing BAD REALITY programs, and they just dont learn from there mistakes.
My thread is an invitation to ask an executive or a programmer from Channel 10 to please respond in this column:
* Why do you persist in producing reality television that sometimes never lasts more than 1 season ?
* Why do you persist in producing content for a niche audience when your audience is actually a mass market.
* Why do you persist in producing bad reality programs that just leaves you running just about ALWAYS 3rd or even sometimes 4th in the ratings (behind the ABC)
Channel 10 Executives - I look forward to your response.

Watached both Rush and The Strip. Found the acting bad, storyline lame and wardrobe was pretty bad, and I agree with J Bar that one girl looked like a hooker. Also agree with em, Aaron Jeffrey cannot act.
Will watch Rush again but The Strip I don't think so...maybe unless somebody can suggest something better at this time.
Felt Rush had better characters and a better storyline. See how I feel next week.

No CSI:NY on Nine next Monday on account of Nine showing a 2-hour season premiere of KITCHEN NIGHTMARES USA from 8.30pm.
Nine has confirmed that GOSSIP GIRL won't premiere on Nine till Summer.
LIFE returns to Ten on Wednesday Sept 24 at 9.30pm with the end of Season 1 - and I expect Ten to fast-track Season 2 (just like Ten has done with BURN NOTICE).
FRINGE starts on Nine on Wednesday, Sept 17 at 8.30pm (replacing MCLEOD'S DAUGHTERS which will now return in Summer).
The reported figure for GHOST WHISPERER last night is for Episode 1 only - the second episode got 815,000.

Tribal Mind asks: Sure, but why would anybody care about that? Are you expecting me to report ratings for every single program and permutation of program? This column is not allowed to give every single audience figure, so I try to select the information of most interest to the greatest number of readers. It's hard to imagine a reader who would be devastated by the absence of data on the second episode of GW -- much as we admire JLH.

  • by cpandilo on September 05, 2008 at 01:38 PM

Good to see CRIMINAL INTENT's audience climbing. I've really been enjoying it recently (though I missed last nights ep).
TAKEN OUT is failing - especially in Sydney. HOLE IN THE WALL is dropping in audience. With Kenny appearing in that timeslot from next week with KENNY'S WORLD the next couple of weeks will make or break (more probably break) HITW.
I enjoy reading alot of the reviews in the TV Guide that SMH publishes on Mondays. It still has a reader here.

Tribal Mind wonders: Are there two cpandilos - one who expresses opinions and one who reports on schedule changes? Or are several readers using the same nom de plume? Would the real cpandilo please speak up? If there's only one cpandilo, why didn't you put all that interesting stuff in the first message?

  • by cpandilo on September 05, 2008 at 01:47 PM

Do you think Channel Teen were trying to cash in on the Underbelly hype by naming that dating show "Taken Out"? To me it sounds like a series on gangland style killings. Of course, it could be my bloodthirsty nature which is constantly being roused by FTA television these days.
Can we start a book on how long before Bert's "face" splits?

  • by Shoopie on September 05, 2008 at 02:16 PM

Shoopie: no point in assassinating something that is dying a slow painful death by itself. Sure 623K isn't anywhere close to 510K but rigormortis is setting in, and I support euthanasia in this instance.
TM: was Friends costing per episode what "Taken Out" (and drowned in a hessian sack in Botany Bay) is costing Ch Shirl?
Sorry for my few comments this week, Master 7.16 has had a full school activity schedule this week, which means I've (thankfully) missed most of the dreck on TV this week.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on September 05, 2008 at 05:00 PM

TM says -- much as we admire JLH.
Well, now please don't count me in as one of those admirers, JLH seems to hope that false eyelashes and large dcolletage will distract people from her very limited acting ability
Although the first episode of Fringe is 2 hours long, I am surprised that Ch 9 are airing it at 8.30 especially on Wednesday where it would be up against Spicks & Specks... There is an slight element of gore which I also would have thought countered against an 8.30pm timelsot
Got the 9s security code talking about Ch 9.... spooky

Dear Randwick Geoff,
in response to your inquiry, please see below:
(a) because they're cheap.
(b) because we don't give a rat's....
(c) because they're cheap.
Hope this clears things up for you,
Yours Insincerely,

P.S: please take the time to tune in to our BRAND NEW!! mockumentary cashing in on the three year old rapidly waning enthusiasm for that mildly likable expert in all things crap...KENNY!! He's taking toilet humour to the World this September. It'll keep us in fourth place (at least).

  • by darren on September 06, 2008 at 05:59 AM

Hi TM,
I notice that you did not put in the figures for the US SYTYCD on Wednesday night. Has it fallen off the chart completely? This could be a bad sign for the second Aus SYTYCD next year if viewers are already losing interest as the standard of dancing was very high on Wednesday, particularly with Oz choreographer Jason Gilkinson choreographing two of the routines.

Tribal Mind replies: It hasn't fallen off the chart. I just didn't think anybody would be interested. It got 809,000.

  • by tide on September 06, 2008 at 06:59 AM

After watching The Strip, I agree with jbar re the jerky camera work.
The Gold Coast is a great location and I don't know why it hasn't been used before but please get rid of that jerky camera.

  • by bobmar28 on September 06, 2008 at 07:30 AM

Man, I cannot stand Channel 7 - daggy and lame. What is it with this site being infested with biased Seven lovers? In fact - when 9 lost its 30 year number one ratings crown in 2007 it wasn't so much that 7 won but more that 9 fully bombed and handed the year to Seven on a platter giving them no competition. Nine and Ten are much better than Seven

  • by Simo on September 06, 2008 at 10:36 AM

Even though it's been going on for a while now, Wire In The Blood continues to surprise with its twists and sometimes shock me with it's storylines. It doubled the ratings of the movie on Ch 10. When are the network programmers going to work out that nobody is interested in watching movies constantly repeated.

  • by J Bar on September 06, 2008 at 02:23 PM

by Simo on September 06, 2008 at 10:36 AM
Apart from one comment by one casual blogger which said "I love Seven", I can't detect any overt bias towards 7 by bloggers... In fact, if you read any of the Olympic coverage comments, Ch 7 was lampooned vigorously for being daggy & lame with their coverage. There are negative comments about Ch 9 but rather than being unwarranted they are deserved. Ch 9 insiders & former insiders acknowledge it themselves that Ch 9 is not the same as it used to be, as Simo you do yourself. Apart from Packed to The Rafters praise, what are the specific comments or bloggers do you perceive to be unfairly biased? You will find that regular bloggers are pretty quick to sniff out PR moles & pretty quick to "out" them as it were...
I wonder what the ratings for the Paraolympics will be? Will it out-rate the 112th repeat of Pretty Woman? I fear that the able-bodied wide mouth red-head may win the rating gold medal..

  • by kate on September 06, 2008 at 04:40 PM

TM, do you know what the peak audience for the AFL final between the Swans and Kangaroos was in Sydney?

TM replies: I don't get the peak figure for any program, only the average audience over the whole showing. But for most live football matches the average tends to be close to the peak. Most viewers tune in for the whole game, rather than dipping in for just one minute. The average was 1.1 million. Do you have some reason to think the peak would have been much more than that?

  • by Dave on September 07, 2008 at 10:28 AM

Someone should tell Channel 9 that their deliberate policy of delaying the start of a show from advertised time is irritating to the extreme and it will result in viewers switching off permanently. I can not be the only one that is peed off.
