The ratings race, updated 11 am Tuesday
A smashing performance by Channel Nine on Sunday was counterbalanced by a smashing performance by Seven on Monday. They were equal on Tuesday, so at this point it's anybody's race, with Seven averaging 28.6 per cent of the prime time audience and Nine averaging 28.5 per cent.

Before next week, Seven wants to be ahead for the year, so nobody can say it was only the Olympics that saved Seven's bacon. But not even Seven's psychics can foresee how it will go.

Seven announced this morning who will be on Dancing With The Stars after the Olympics. Although it has still not decided who will be lucky enough to co-host with the sainted Sonia, Seven can reveal the dancers will be James Tobin (Sunrise), Charli Delaney (Choirs), Cal Wilson (Thank God You're Here), Toni Pearen (Aus Videos), Paul Licuria (AFL), Danny Green (boxing), Brooke Hanson (swimming), Red Symons (Australia's Got Talent), Luke Jacobz and Jodi Gordon (Home and Away).

The ratings race, updated 10am Monday
peter.jpg It was back to domesticity and reassuring predictability in Australia's entertainment choices last week. According to OzTAM, Channel Seven averaged 28.6 per cent of the prime time audience, scoring with its Sunday news, Better Homes and Gardens, City Homicide and RSPCA Animal Rescue.

Channel Nine got 25.9 per cent, thanks to 60 Minutes and Domestic Blitz. Only Wipeout suggested some viewers prefer a little edginess. Over the ratings year so far, Seven and Nine are neck and neck, each with 27.7 per cent of the audience

Channel Ten (21.1 per cent last week) finally found an audience for Big Brother, which drew 1.4m for the announcement of its winner, but otherwise Ten could not get a program into the top 30 (see below). On the ABC (17 per cent), The Hollowmen have lost their sheen, dropping 200,000 to 907,000 (are viewers finding the show too cynical for these idealistic times?). But The Gruen Transfer and Spicks and Specks continue to soar, and Peter Cundall's final appearance on Gardening Australia drew 932,000 on Saturday.

For its healthy 7.4 per cent, SBS can thank Top Gear (902,000) and the Tour de France, which drew 587,000 late on Saturday night.

On Pay TV, Saturday's Bledisloe Cup drew 348,000 to Fox Sports 3, and the other most watched programs included NRL Storm v Dragons (Fox Sports 2) 270,000; NRL Raiders v Titans 268,000; Family Guy (Fox 8) 210,000; Futurama (Fox 8) 198,000 and Miley Cyrus's concert tour (Disney Channel) 159,000.

COMMENTS

Hollowmen lost viewers, from my viewpoint, cause it's not especially funny.
Yeah - it's well written, reasonably well acted, but the laughs are neither as quick, biting, satirical, or outrageous as Frontline.
And it's still missing the outstanding episode resolutions that made Frontline a total joy.
And it's also a very colourless show (I assume that's to do with the colourless men angle too).
There were several written comments last week that Big Brother had had its run and that viewers had tired of it, the format, and that it was not the fault of Kyle and Jackie O.
I beg to differ.
They were this family's solitary decision to not watch and several acquaintances had that reason too.
Looking forward to Dr Who tonight. LAst week was a bit boring, hoping this week perks up. But even when it is dry - it's still fantastic telly.
As is the Gruen Transfer. Shall miss it. I presume it will return after it's final(?) outing this week.
And I continue to take exception to Two and a Half Men being shown by nine @ 7pm.
It is too sexual for that time slot by far.

  • by David @ Wahroonga on July 27, 2008 at 06:17 PM

RE: The Hollowmen, I found it very funny, mainly because Mr Beckala is a public servant and found many of the situations all too familiar, and also work in a school that takes bureaucracy to a whole new level. So found it very familiar to me. The problem with comparisons to a show like Frontline is that (a) Current Affairs programs are always going to be a more interesting topic than bureaucracy and (b)it was a show so far above everything in terms of satire and comedy achievement that everything pales in comparison.
and re: 2 and a half men, do 9 do what 10 do with Friends and edit it within an inch of its life? So many vital lines are edited out, making some episodes very difficult to understand, because although the lines probably are sexual in nature (although FAR less than Men) but contain vital information.
David@Wahroonga, I too was one of those people who refused to watch BB because of Vile and Tacky Ho. I hate them and barely tolerate Idol now he is on there.

  • by Beckala on July 28, 2008 at 08:18 AM

RE: The Hollowmen.
The reason that it is leaking viewers is that the majority of ABC viewers are left-leaning ALP sympathisers. As this show is built around the premise of spin doctors and image making obsessed PR tossers, it is in fact taking the P*** out of the PM, the ALP and their rise to power. Those who dearly love our shambolic yet symbolic-loving PM will not wish to sit through this charade and squirm at their gullability. It would be like the ABC making a comedy that takes the P*** out of the hysterical global warming believers. Now that would be funny.

Tribal Mind asks: But Hollowmen could equally have been shown last year, in which case some would have said it was attacking the Howard government's use of spin doctors. Or do you think such people did not exist under the previous government?

  • by Sebastien on July 28, 2008 at 09:52 AM

On 'The Games' - surely this is the right time for a repeat? (Maybe when Gruen finishes?) That would definitely stand up to repeated viewing!!
I don't think Hollowmen lost viewers because it is too cynical - but because it is disappointing.
When watching it I see a little of Frontline, a little of Yes Minister, a little of the Games - but not enough originality.
Having Rob Sitch & Santo reprising their Frontline roles I think was the biggest mistake. It really drives home the feeling of having seen it all before.
I will keep watching as it is still quite funny & better than most of the drivel on TV, but I am not surprised it is losing viewers.

  • by Shark on July 28, 2008 at 09:53 AM

Interesting the TGYH got more viewers for a repeat than Dr Who. Maybe the Working Dogs people should be making more of that than Hollowmen. I find my interest in H fading. It is well written and amusing but no Frontline that's for sure. So not sure how long I will keep watching.
Dr Who first of 2 parter last night. Didnt find the story particuarly good, maybe second half better?

  • by em on July 28, 2008 at 10:48 AM

"Tribal Mind asked: But Hollowmen could equally have been shown last year, in which case some would have said it was attacking the Howard government's use of spin doctors. Or do you think such people did not exist under the previous government?"

In response I would have to say that yes, it would have been assumed to be attacking the Howard government if it was shown in 2007 or earlier but would it have leaked as many viewers ?? I do not think so as ABC viewers would have been happy with the overall premise as it would have supported their political viewpoint. Anything construed to be anti-Howard would have been alright as it would have supported the beliefs of many ABC viewers.
My point is that a show - any show - that is not aligned to the beliefs of the ABC viewers will not rate all that well.

Tribal Mind replies: The ABC's audience has grown considerably this year, and it's possible some of the new viewers are not lefties.

  • by Sebastien on July 28, 2008 at 10:52 AM

I agree with David @ Wahroonga - Hollowmen isn't funny. I also find it tiresome; I deal with people like that every day and the last thing I want is for them to follow me home at night when I'm trying to entertain myself.

  • by Rupert on July 28, 2008 at 11:17 AM

About 'Hollowmen', I found it disappointing too, although it's probably due to getting my hopes up that Sitch & co. would return to 'Frontline' form after going back to the ABC. They didn't. It's too polite. Too beige.
And I think all those left-leaning ALP sympathising ABC viewers lean much further left than the only slightly left of centre Rudd. There's no real Left at the moment. 'Hollowmen' applies across the board.
About 'Two & a Half Men', I agree it's a bit much for 7:30, but I can't notice much difference in the saucily promoted "Adults Only Hour" except they sometimes say 'penis' or 'tits'. Nine's just reeling people in with the prospect of hearing talk of 'boobies'. Ooooh...controversial. And cheap. I'm sure all of America is laughing demurely behind their delicate gloved hands ("Teeheehee"), given that they bleep out words like 'nipple' on PG13 shows.
About 'Friends'. I think Ten just cuts out big chunks of dialogue so they can fit in "phone ********* for Terri" ads (now replaced by that bloody 'Idol' promo).
I really don't understand the ratings system at all. Yesterday on 'Sunday Arts' there was full-frontal nudity. At 5:00 pm. But then that's art (for left-leaning Labor sympathising ABC viewers).

  • by darren on July 28, 2008 at 11:30 AM

Sebastien, you seem to be implying that only people with left wing views watch ABC and that Hollowmen is having a go at the present government and that is why numbers are dropping off. I would argue that Hollowmen could be portraying either side of politics. The real reason viewers are dropping off is not because "lefties" find it offensive but that it is simply not as funny as Frontline etc and also most new programs lose viewers after a few eps. It will probably stabilise around the 900,000 mark.
BTW I watch ABC because I find their programs to be entertaining, educational or informative and a vast improvement to the tripe the commercial networks show. ABC'S viewers have increased in numbers for the same reason as many feel like I do. My political opinions have nothing at all to do with it. And I am rather tired of being "labeled" because I have a brain and choose to watch the ABC.

  • by em on July 28, 2008 at 01:25 PM

TM, can you post the ratings figures for last night's final stage of Tour de France on SBS please? I just want to know whether people kept watching after Cadel Evans finished second in the crucial time trial the night before and lost the chance to win the tour. Thanks.

  • by Johnson on July 28, 2008 at 01:25 PM

Tribal Mind: How did last night's Tour De France rate on SBS? It was the last night of it, with Australian's Cadel Evans coming in second place?

Tribal Mind replies: In the chart now, and pretty good for that time of night

  • by Jimbo on July 28, 2008 at 02:19 PM

{prude mode on} I'm surprised at the ads for Mark Love Sharon being on at regular viewing time i.e. during SYTYCD last night. Sure, the character has the mental age of Master 7.09 but mention of orgasms luckily goes straight over his head.
Master 4.1 was unlucky to catch some of 2 1/2 men the other night, watched for a moment, then turned the TV off telling me he didn't want to watch that "sexy" show.
Hollowmen. Haven't watched since Episode 1. Did some navel gazing, perhaps since Santo was almost playing the "weatherman" role again it slightly smacked of Frontline. I guess it's difficult also to play the same bureaucrat role week after week.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on July 28, 2008 at 02:33 PM

I agree with David@Wahroonga, Shark Rupert and Darren about Hollowmen - it is not as good as it could be (a la Frontline or the Yes Minister/ Prime Minister series) and yes Darren it is beige!
And Beckala although I am a public servant and work in the same place as Mr Beckala I do not find it as funny as perhaps your household did.
Sebastien I disagree with your point "that a show - any show - that is not aligned to the beliefs of the ABC viewers will not rate all that well". I am not a leftie and I watch the ABC (but then again I watch Free to Air as well). What drives me away from a show is not the opinion it expresses (Unless Vyle is hosting) it is generally the quality (or lack thereof) of the material on offer.
Mrs Skerrick I notice that on last week's blog you comments on Shirl lather repeat friday movie as something different to what is scheduled for sydney - we have Bridget Jones 2 where you say Star Wars 1 -which I am sure will beto create interest in the upcoming and quite pointless animated clone wars for the cinema
I do nto believe

  • by Cathy on July 28, 2008 at 02:54 PM

Hmm, have only seen the first episode of Hollowmen. Not intentionally, Wednesday is just not a big TV watching night for us (we've either got friends over, or Mr TQD is out and I'm catching up with friends online).
We just had to delete many (MANY) unwatched shows from our HDD PVR because we were running out of room. Again. Damn it, I don't know how people can say there's nothing on TV, I cannot keep up with it all.
Recorded Doctor Who last night, but did watch it before Dexter. Still enjoying it, still just damned good fun. Recorded Dexter, hopefully will watch it tonight. Will probably record Burn Notice since I'm in desperate need of an early night. Will record The Simpsons tomorrow, since that's bedtime for the smaller members of the household.
See the theme?
btw, I did like The Dark Knight, but it would have been nice to have a warning along the lines of: very long movie. Mortgage the house for the babysitter fees. I have to see it again, because I was so exhausted and headache-y by the end that it was all a bit of a blur. (Serves us right for attempting a late session, I guess. But I wanted dinner first, damnit!)

  • by tqd on July 28, 2008 at 02:58 PM

Cathy: Star Wars is Friday Week. Bridget Jones Part Deux is this week.
And despite mocking the 74th repeat of Love Actually I did watch. Why? Colin Firth. And I'll watch Bridget Jones this week for the same reason.
Love how Ch Lather Rinse Repeat is touting the hot new series Burn Notice when they arsed it earlier this year.

CANAL ROAD returns to Nine on Sunday, August 10 @ 10.30pm & will then air on Tuesday 12th & Wednesday 13th @ 10.30pm.
THE BIG BANG THEORY returns to Nine on Monday, August 11 @ 7pm - airing weeknights.
NIGHTLINE has been axed & will be replaced from tonight by JUST SHOOT ME! from Mondays to Wednesdays.
The SUNDAY final will air next Sunday morning on Nine.
Kate, my understanding of the 4.30pm timeslot is that BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL wins its timeslot, Seven's 4.30 News comes second followed by Nine's Afternoon News.
I personally would have kept NIGHTLINE and show the new 5am Early Morning News at 5.30am followed by Today at 6.30. It's not like they'll get much advert revenue from other programs in that timeslot anyway. Also, my understanding is that NIGHTLINE usually wins its timeslot in the ratings.
Also, TM the figures that you put in the chart for last Wednesday's news bulletins were for Nine's 11am news & Seven's 11.30 News. The figures for the early news editions before Sunrise & Today should come under "SEVEN'S EARLY NEWS" & "NINE EARLY MORNING NEWS".

9 has announced it will be screening The View middays and Ellen at 1pm, before Days of our Lives at 2pm.
Why are they wasting their time when both shows are on foxtel 3hours earlier and when Ellen failed on ten back in 2006 when they use to screen it at midday and also why bother when the catch up which was a remake of the view failed miserably
just when u thought 9 was getting some common sense! b interesting to see the ratings when its starts

Thank you for this information, which makes me even more the vexed that they axe Nightline instead of the 4.30pm? I don't get home in time to watch any 6pm bulletin.
Yes - Em, subjective of course but the second half of 2 parter Doctor Who improves.
Finally what a difference a country makes... In the US, the second season of a show (ironically) about advertising is being launched with an advertising campaign of $25 million to promote the launch. How many shows could be made for that budget? The ratio is about $25 dollars for every 1 viewer who watched it last season... as it is on cable TV.

Tribal Mind remarks: Is the show you are talking about 'Mad Men', shown here on Pay TV?

  • by Kate on July 28, 2008 at 10:16 PM

Wish SBS would stop editing out Top Gear to advertise Oz top Gear. Mr Beckala got to see last night's episode on the plane back to Sydney (wasn't he in heaven, all new season eps, play on demand, no wonder he was so jet lagged!!) and said he thought they cut a few things out. Love Top Gear, hate the thought of an Oz version...
Ms Skerrick, have you managed to catch Mr Firth in Mamma Mia yet? Dragged Mr Beckala to see it while we were in London (had time to kill before the flight) and I loved it. Not sure if Mr B did, but I LOVED Mr Firth. Much better than Pierce Brosnan, who simply cannot sing! It was cringe worthy material every time he opened his mouth! And Amanda Seyfried, from my new fave show Big Love (dammit, last episode this week) was fantastic!
Cathy posted: And Beckala although I am a public servant and work in the same place as Mr Beckala I do not find it as funny as perhaps your household did.
I think we had the bonus of missing the first few episodes, being OS, so we only saw our first episode last week. That said, Mr Beckala didn't watch a lot of it. And I was still jet lagged, so I'm interested to see if I enjoy it as much this week...I think what many people have said is that it's too similar every week, and therefore I was easily entertained because (a) hadn't seen it before and (b) the afore mentioned jet lag!

I am a leftie and I watch Hollowmen. I dont think the show is about Labor or Liberal and if it were about Labor I would still find it amusing.
You say " My point is that a show - any show - that is not aligned to the beliefs of the ABC viewers will not rate all that well."
If it was the type of humor that appealed to the masses and was really funny then people would watch it. I think most people don't find the material particularly funny. People who are really interested in politics are the ones who would mainly watch this show.
If the Chaser were still on this year, and making fun of Labor, I would bet money on the fact that they would still have a huge audience.
I also know plenty of people who vote Liberal who watch the ABC. I think your argument is flawed.

How did channel 10's decision to show Friends at 7pm go? - did it rate better then Bondi?
Also has 7 made up for the ground lost to 9 on Sunday?

Tribal Mind replies: In the chart now. Yes.

  • by James on July 29, 2008 at 10:21 AM

Ch 10 is really having a shocker. Neighbours is their top show of the night and it's all downhill from there. Terrible ratings for 'America's Next Top Model' at 7.30pm and even worse for 'The F word' and 'Burn Notice' at 9.30pm. 'Friends' not doing much better than 'Bondi Rescue' in that slot.
Shark,
'The Games' is being shown next month on Foxtel's Comedy Channel.

  • by J Bar on July 29, 2008 at 10:25 AM

i can only hope Foxtel (SkyNews???) takes up the mantle of having a Sunday style program. This has been mandatory viewing in our house and when they moved it to 7.30 (how in the f&^% was it supposed to rate at that hour, Nein?) we simply IQed it.
FTA TV has a definite Use By date about it now. It is long past its Best Before.

  • by David on July 29, 2008 at 10:54 AM

Tyra Banks is starting to scare me. She seems to be slowly turning into Maria Venutti.
Just read Mike Munroe's saying tata to Nine. Could he possibly be on his way to Today Tonight?
After reading in Saturday's paper that the 'Granny in Chains' debacle has cost Seven another six figure sum, to the nursing home they slandered (allegedly), they must be counting the seconds until Anna Coren leaves. Volunteering to ring and book a flight.
Mike would be seen by most intelligent people as an unimaginitive and pathetic replacement so I'm thinking Seven probably would think he's great.
By the way, did anyone else see Amanda Paterson (ACA rottweiller) fall on her smug arse last night? Funny. And a long time coming. Send Ben Fordham next time. There's plenty for everyone.

  • by darren on July 29, 2008 at 11:26 AM

It is annoying that we're not getting the final comment/goodnight from Jeremy and the gang. The ads for the new TopGearOz are quite pointless. Will be going and buying the latest version of the mag though! For my customers to read whilst they're waiting of course!

Tribal Mind asks: Customers?

  • by Bereft Skerrick on July 29, 2008 at 11:39 AM

NEIGHBOURS' ratings are starting to increase, does anyone think that there's anything to it?
FRIENDS did better than BONDI RESCUE repeats though not better than BIG BROTHER. THE SIMPSONS repeats are back on weeknights and the ratings for 6pm are much better (gaining 150-200,000 viewers. Perhaps this is the reason for NEIGHBOURS doing much better? This also provides evidence that lead-ins do makequite a contribution - there was some debate recently of whether lead-ins do make much of a difference.
30 ROCK also increased its ratings last night quite significantly. Perhaps NIGHTLINE's viewers have moved to it, showing that they prefer 30 ROCK to JUST SHOOT ME! repeats.
TM, can you provide the ratings for JUST SHOOT ME! to see how its doing against the former NIGHTLINE & also the other networks?
Mondys from 9.30pm are my favourite time for television viewing (with BURN NOTICE, FOOTY CLASSIFIED, BOSTON LEGAL, 30 ROCK, HAPPY HOUR, JUST SHOOT ME!, LATE SHOW & ER I do sometimes think that a PVR would be a good idea for me - I already record MONK). What are other posters' favourite viewing days/times?
PENN & TELLER: BS is returning (replacing CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM) from next week on Tuesday nights @ midnight. Also, HEROES returns next Wednesday @ 9.30pm on Seven with a double episode followed by SECONDS FROM DISASTER. I guess that CAVEMEN has been relegated to 12.30am.
BTW, TM you forgot to include the ratings for CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM. Can you include them this week?

Tribal Mind replies: Just Shoot Me got 196,000 viewers.

  • by cpandilo on July 29, 2008 at 11:40 AM

How did "The F Word" go last night - I notice that a lot of people tuned into Gordon Ramsay for real rather than the series. (It was advertised for 9:30 on 9). Is the ABC the latest to pick up on the Ramsay golden touch? Maybe Channel 7 should find a Chef to adopt. Channel 9 has Gordon, Channel 10 has Jamie and I'm sure that a quick glance at the Food Channel back catalogue would provide someone competitive and delectable.
Another word on The Hollowmen. As an ex-public servant I watched the first episode for its curiousity value - and found that it was pretty close to my knowledge and experience of how some Minister's offices operated - for both parties. I watched the second episode to see if it was actually entertaining and found that it wasn't that much. The humour is subtle but rare, the characters don't generate empathy (true hollow men?) and I find I don't care about the plots they are trying to find solutions too.
And it's not because I'm a leftie. I love good political satire no matter who it's directed at. But it's got to be good. Maybe we expect too much of Working Dog, but The Hollowmen doesn't quite cut it. It's not a PM's office... it's more a Minister for Territories.

Tribal Mind replies: The F Word was so far down the chart I didn't even notice it -- Number 31, with 603,000 viewers.

  • by Ozpuck on July 29, 2008 at 11:48 AM

Have to say I like the ABC iviews concept as I forgot to record Foyles War on sunday and can catch up this week before the final episode - will probably catch up Friday night before delving into BJ Part Two for the previously mentioned Mr Firth.
Dave who thought nein has common sense read yesterday they are bring back "the Block" on steriods and doing a local series of Wipeout - methinks sense left the station a long long time ago
Mrs Skerrick - with you on the Colin Firth argument as it is about the only reason I will see Mamma Mia - not an Abba Fan (need other music to remove tunes from memory after movie ) - I have noted Beckala's comments too and will see what I think.

  • by Cathy on July 29, 2008 at 11:53 AM

The raft of changes to Ch9's schedule suggest that they're going to wear their daggies whilst crossing the BOG. Having reached the other side they'll get their old clothes back from the laundry, change a few buttons and set off again to the strains of the 'Beancounters March'.

  • by Les on July 29, 2008 at 01:53 PM

City Homicide beaten by Farmer Wants a Wife in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
It's the F Word stuffing 9 up on Mondays.
Overall it's great to see 9 getting back on top!!

  • by Alex on July 29, 2008 at 02:19 PM

Did anyone here watch Enough Rope with Gordo last night? I was unable to watch it and am interested in how GR came across given a not particularly flattering review I read in SMH.
So Mike Munro has left Nein - looks as if Bert will be the last man standing - a task he will perform with ease as he is 99% plastic or whatever mannequins are made of...

  • by Shoopie on July 29, 2008 at 02:37 PM

  • by Randwick Geoff on July 29, 2008 at 03:08 PM

Tribal Mind remarks: Is the show you are talking about 'Mad Men', shown here on Pay TV?
Oops, yes. It was in my original draft that went "pfft" .. Mad Men is the ad show.

  • by Kate on July 29, 2008 at 06:22 PM

Dare we play "spot the Nein mole"?
Apparently Larry Emdur has not got the DWTS gig. From what I've heard Ch 7 knocked him back. What are they smoking?

Tribal Mind wonders: What, you think Emdur would be good with the sainted Sonia?

  • by Bereft Skerrick on July 29, 2008 at 07:13 PM

TM: think of the alternatives to having a Larry/Sonia duo. Andrew O'Keefe. Any of the Daddos. Denyer. Kochie. Tom Williams. A newly unemployed Mike Munro. Death is not an option.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on July 29, 2008 at 09:28 PM

by Bereft Skerrick on July 29, 2008 at 09:28 PM Bereft, I'm begging you, stop your mental torture or death will be not only be an option but preferable...

Well, last night was a waste of airtime on all channels - boring, boring, boring.
Watched about 5 minutes of The One - good grief - is it supposed to be a comedy? Its laughable anyway.

  • by Shoopie on July 30, 2008 at 06:28 AM

To my fellow female bloggers on here. Colin Firth is fantastic in Mama Mia. Just a real scream. Stay around for the credits as the three men in the film do their Abba bit in full Bee Gees type gear! Very, very funny. Pierce Bronson can't sing it's true but neither can Meryl but is all works anyway. A good , fun night out at the flicks. Grab the girlfriends and go if you havent seen it yet.

Also saw "The Black Knight" the other day.
Great movie though a bit long. I will be very surprised if Heath doesnt get an Oscar nom. He deserves it. Also worth seeing.
Next to see for me is the X Files movie
as I was a fan of the show. Anyone seen it yet?

As for DWTS, I just read a list of who is going to be in it, but no mention of who the new host is. Not that I really care as I wont watch it , only watched the first season and have never watched since. I really cant stand Sonia and Daryl used to make me cringe.

  • by em on July 30, 2008 at 07:49 AM

Alex, are you on drugs Nine got smashed on Monday night and will likely get smashed this week.
Nine and Ten seem to enjoy running repeats of the same programs. At least ABC and Seven provide some variety.

  • by Michael on July 30, 2008 at 08:27 AM

Does anyone when know when and if 9 are screening Pushing Daisies? It was on the handout disk with the Sunday paper at the beginning of the year, and I watched it and I liked it, but now it seems to be absent from all of 9's current "coming up" promos. I have been wondering if 9 has had a change of heart about showing it.
Also TM how has the Bachelor Rome been rating on 9 at noon Tuesday to Friday? I am a Bachelor fan from way back (tragic I know) and it has been great to watch it again. I hope they continue to show series of The Bachelor or The Bachelorette in that time slot - it is simply too much fun and I have missed it so.

  • by LAH on July 30, 2008 at 10:29 AM

Re DWTS: Should be re-named Dancing With the Mediocre Wannabes (DWTMW) or Dancing With A Lot Of Talentless B-grade Smiles on Sticks (DWALOTBGSOS). Really.
As for the host, I nominate Matt White. Everything on Seven should be hosted by him & Chris Bath. They could get up at say 3:00 am, do the early News, Then Sunrise, The Morning Show, The Morning News... (a think you get the idea) and go to bed at 11:00 pm or so. They're the only humans at Seven, let alone the only humans at Seven who can be attractive & funny without a cue-card (Chris....sigh).
TM: on a comPLETEly unrelated topic, just wondering, have you ever thought of taking this show on the road?
I'm thinking "Tribal Mind TV".
That guy, what's his name...David Dale could host or be an expert guest, along with the likes of Ruth Ritchie, Michael Idato, maybe Adam Richard (he's such a bitch).
There used to be a show on the ABC called TVTV which was like 'At the Movies with David & Margaret' but for television. Hosted by Simon Townsend. Anyone remember that?
I envision a comfy lounge-type setting with various guests in egg-shaped swivel chairs rolling their eyes & matching wits while discussing the woeful state & occasional gems of Australian TV. Perhaps reading emails from fans occasionally ....."regarding Bert's head, Shoopie wrote..." or, "speaking of David Koch, yesterday we recieved this comment from Em / Bereft Skerrick / Cathy" etc.... (hilarity ensues).
Like 'The Gruen Transfer' but better. It'd be a winner, I'm telling you.

  • by darren on July 30, 2008 at 11:27 AM

Alex is either "the mole" or my grandmother, who last changed the channel to 10 in 1979 and saw five minutes of the women swearing in Prisoner and turned it back to Nine where it now stays. I hope you enjoy BB09 Nan!!!

  • by Scriptwriter on July 30, 2008 at 12:23 PM

Shoopie you asked how Gordie went on Enough Rope - agreed with the review - he was a bit evasive on some questions and I noted an overuse of the word amazing - everything was amazing - his skill as a chef, his children, his life - methinks he needs a new thesaurus as obviously swear words and amazing are his alternates. It does not rate amongst Mr Denton's must see interviews.

Em agree with you about Heath and the Dark Knight. Will stay at end of Mamma Mia for the boys.

Host of DWTS my guesses... won't be Denyer or Kochie for reasons argued by other TMers...,

Maybe Glenn Robbins now K&K is on break, or it could be Andrew O'Keefe as he is the go to host. Anh Do or Ernie Dingo now Tom Williams is hosting more on Great Outdoors

Who said it had to be a bloke? What about a girl - Jessica Rowe anyone??

  • by Cathy on July 30, 2008 at 01:21 PM

I am not a Ch 9 mole, eek, heaven forbid! Yet I feel I can report the real reason why Mike Munro resigned. The clue is in the advertisement for This is your life which airs tonight... Mike probably felt so embarrassed by being made to utter the words (which is did without choking on them), "one of the best musical talents that this country has ever produced" ... Really? The person being "honoured" has done the best with what he has but to call him one of the best ever produced does not say much about Oz music...
Yes, Michael, Ch 9 seems to be the repeat zone or the silly games show zone.

  • by kate on July 30, 2008 at 02:11 PM

ABC and Seven provide variety ?? ABC1 primetime is OK but ABC2 is nearly all repeats and Seven is showing 5 or 6 eps of V of D this week as well as 3 eps of Criminal Minds. Ch9's 2.5 men tally this week, 7eps, is coming close to ch10's record for The Simpsons. It's criminal !

  • by Les on July 30, 2008 at 02:16 PM

Re DWTHB - why do we need a male host anyway? Why can't Sonia do it by herself? In my expert opinion as a TV viewer of many years, why have a host/hostess anyway - all they do is dribble on with rubbish. If I watched the show I would want to watch dancing not waffle. And do we really need or want a rehash of the rehearsals?
Re Mumma Mia, my sister saw it the other week and thought it was fantastic and she is not a musical fan. Am also looking forward to X-Files - just saving up for the petrol to get to the cinema!!

  • by Shoopie on July 30, 2008 at 02:35 PM

Sorry to be dense, but Les, what is V of D?

  • by LAH on July 30, 2008 at 03:43 PM

Darren - a TV show on the Tribal Mind - what a concept! And Matt White hosting DTWS interesting thought - think he may be too tired if he does everything
Someone on another site suggested William McInnes - I second that idea or perhaps Rhys Muldoon - either would be fun to watch.

  • by Cathy on July 30, 2008 at 03:53 PM

Quoth darren on July 30, 2008 at 11:27 AM: "There used to be a show on the ABC called TVTV which was like 'At the Movies with David & Margaret' but for television. Hosted by Simon Townsend. Anyone remember that?"
Hell, *I* remember Simon Townsend's WonderWorld! (And I did surreptitiously wipe away a tear or two when Woodrow died.)
Good news about Heroes coming back next week. But couldn't they have chosen another night? Wednesdays are already chockers!

  • by tqd on July 30, 2008 at 04:13 PM

  • by cpandilo on July 30, 2008 at 04:18 PM

South Coast Correspondent of TMTV reporting in. I assume DWTHB: Dancing with the Has Beens? How about DWTDL: Dancing With the D List?
Matt White is a better choice but he's way too good as he seems to have a decent personality. As does bathie. I too want Sonia to host, but someone needs to snark in the green room and pimp the voting numbers.
I've read somewhere else that someone has suggested Bob Downe, or even just his alter ego Mark Trevorrow.

  • by Bereft SKerrick on July 30, 2008 at 05:05 PM

  • by kate on July 30, 2008 at 11:45 PM

Actually, on second thought leave Matt White & Chris Bath (Chris...sigh) for all the Newses and I agree with Shoopie @2:35 on July 30, that Sonia should just go it alone. Bereft Skerrick, she could stand in the 'ballroom' with the 'dancer' while the judges rip them to shreds & then the lead in after the ad break could be pre-recorded 'behind the scenes' fiddle-farting before cutting back to Sonia saying "well you loved her on 'Australia's Funniest Home Videos' and 'E-Street', now here she is with the Lambada, Toni....PEARAN, yay!!!!". It could work. To tell the truth I care...this much (I'm pressing my index finger against my thumb).
Bob Downe would be excellent but Seven will never risk someone with an independent sense of humour. Could show the whole thing up for what it is (crap).

  • by darren on July 31, 2008 at 05:59 AM

Who was on This Is Your Life last night? From the ads, I was suspecting someone like (gasp in horror) Shannon Nolls... Or maybe John Farnham... Either way, it couldn't have been pretty.

  • by Beckala on July 31, 2008 at 06:39 AM

Question for you folks - do any of you give a tinker's about the Olympics Chinese style (i.e. with smog you could kill ducks with). Full disclosure - I do not which is unusual for me. I am not a sports fan (except cricket) but usually enjoy the summer games and watch at least a few events. This year I really am not interested and the attempts to build the hype are just irritating me.
I must endorse the comments about Mamma Mia. I went with my father (75 y.o.) as we were the only Abba fans in a large family and we loved it. Apart from the music the obvious fun that the cast was having really lifted it - Mr Firth got into his role with gay abandon or should I say "spontaneity". My father loved it so much he wants to go again and I am quite happy to go with him. He made me laugh as much as the movie because he hummed along with everything including one of the quiet pieces and when he finished a couple of teenagers a few rows back applauded him. Cracked me up. Also I loved the fact that the movie was dominated by the older cast and I am actually closer to Amanda Seifrieds age than Streeps (just).

  • by Cat on July 31, 2008 at 08:29 AM

Wow seven & abc flogging everyone else for wed night. Prison Break's ratings were very good considering the timeslot (444k from 10.30 to 12.30 I think). Was Scrubs shown in a post-midnight timeslot? If so then the ratings are sensational!

  • by arthur on July 31, 2008 at 09:21 AM

Hi, couple of questions and observations.
TM on the Road - I do not remember TVTV but I do remember a show on the ABC hosted by Tim Bowden which had viewers complaints/compliments about ABC shows. TM on the road could be TV Watch. Who knows with all the extra channels fighting for content, might get a guernsey.
Great ratings for ABC. Do you think they will overtake Channel 10 and be third for the week? Friday and Saturday nights are usually strong showings for them.
Mark Trevorrow for host of DWTS - that would be great. He is genuinely funny, has a wide variety of interests, and cannot help himeself and breaks into Bob Downe from time to time.
I have not seen Mamma Mia the movie, but did see the musical. There was barely a story, but the fun the cast were having was obvious and it was great fun. Sounds like the movie has captured this. Will probably go and see - having Colin Firth is of course the real clincher in going.

  • by Louise on July 31, 2008 at 09:44 AM

Cat ~ I am with you. Olympics have degenerated into a farce. Just not interested and time zone fiasco means "ïmportant" events happen during the day our time to cater for the US tv audience or late an night.
tqd - Glad Heroes is back, but could have waited until AFTER the Olympics because it has to be dragged for a few weeks. This is probably the last parts of the previous series, similar to how they treated Prison Break. Not too happy about that either.
On a final note, am saddened Foyles War is over - a great series

  • by ozinoz on July 31, 2008 at 10:15 AM

by Cat on July 31, 2008 at 08:29 AM

Have to agree with you Cat, I care as much about the Olympics as Darren cares about DWTHB (you guessed correctly, BS). It sounds as if Seven is sending as many commentators as there are athletes going. The promos are about as inspiring as a wet sock...

Watched RSPCA last night only because 7.30 Report starred Dr Nelson droning on and on - I calculate that only about 10 minutes was worth watching (debatable), the remainder rehash after rehash and commercials. Equally annoying was the voice-over drama queen with his pathetic attempts to dramatise everything. Sheesh!

Thought Hollowmen was a slightly funnier last night - perhaps it is an acquired taste? Will miss The Gruen Transfer but wasn't Spicks and Specks great?

Thanks Beckala, you've just killed my appetite and it's nearly lunchtime...

  • by Shoopie on July 31, 2008 at 11:00 AM

Interesting comment on the Chinese Olympics, Cat.
I am completely disinterested in any sports, whether people running very fast, jumping very high, hitting a ball with a stick, or whatever. Absolutely don't get it.
I've never watched an opening ceremony, or a closing one, or the stuff in between.
However, this time I won't be boycotting the news like I would normally do to avoid the razamatazz. I think there could be some interesting stories coming out of China during the games, and I don't mean sporting stories!

  • by Sal on July 31, 2008 at 11:34 AM

re: Cat on July 31, 2008 at 08:29 AM
Are you channelling my thoughts! I said exactly the same thing today at work re the BOs (Beijing Olympics) - and got almost unanimous agreement...in preparation I have bought some great old movies on DVD this week including Marnie, The Birds, Battle of Britain, Patton, Breakfast at Tiffanys, ABBA Gold (I just can't stop hummin' dem tunes from seeing Mamma Mia!) - so I'm hoping that these will see me through some of the games nights - given that most of the FTAs are scheduling junk the entire time!
I have a feeling that overall Olympic viewing will be down on previous years - maybe something to track against TM?

  • by AJ on July 31, 2008 at 12:22 PM

Heroes is coming back next week with a double episode, huh? Considering there are only 2 eps left in the season, Seven are obviously getting them out of the way before the Olympics. But they should have just held them over until the 3rd season.

  • by Fielding on July 31, 2008 at 12:49 PM

last nights episode of This Is Your Life was one of the worst I have ever seen.. what is happening at channel 9.. it was dragged out there was so much over laughing it was terrible, and what was with the tribute to Shannon Nolls father wasnt the show meant to be about shannon, oh more like he has no history and nothing much to say so they just filled the show with padding.. and the ratings speak for themselves.. beaten by So you THink You Can Dance.. need i say more!!

  • by dave on July 31, 2008 at 12:50 PM

Cat, I am with you. I dont give a damn about the Olympics this time round. China has an appalling record on human rights and I can't understand why the Olympic committee even awarded them the games. I know this isnt the forum for political comment but I am staging my own boycott of the Games and wont be watching.

BTW, Foriegn Correspondent the other night had an excellent story about China and just how oppressive this regime is.

Anyway, I shall find other things to watch or do during the games. And will spare a thought for those Chinese & Tibetan people who are suffering in order for China to show off to the world.

  • by em on July 31, 2008 at 01:20 PM

TM, how did CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM do on Tuesday night?
arthur, SVRUBS is shown 3.30 weekdays on Seven until tomorrow because from Monday Seven will be showing KEEPING UP APPEARANCES & BENNY HILL.
Wow, MCLEOD'S DAUGHTERS finished fourth in its timeslot. Guess it really is time for it to go.
MONSTER HOUSE returns to Nine on Tuesday, August 12 @ 10.30pm.

Tribal Mind replies: Curb Your Enthusiasm does so badly it does not appear in the top 110 programs for the day, which means it must have got less than 93,000. By the way, David Letterman got 173,000.

  • by cpandilo on July 31, 2008 at 04:06 PM

This is Your Life with Shannon Noll? The Hell? What are the crack monkeys at Nein smoking? Was much of it a blur because Shannon was (self admitted) stoned or drunk at the time? No wonder Mike jumped.

Hi LAH, Kate is right about V of D and I guess everyone decrypted the BOG one. (Beijing Olympic Games). One of life's small pleasures, making up simple but devious acronym's, especially if there's a pun involved.

  • by Les on July 31, 2008 at 05:04 PM

Question, why does everyone spell Channel Nine here as 'Nein'?? Is it a running joke or something??
I'm not on drugs to whoever mentioned it I was just stating that 9 was winning so far the ratings year, they won't win because 7 has the olympics however.
McLeod's Daughters needs to be moved to 10.30!! That's appalling.
Also, Channel 7 should be referred to as the granny network now - it's winning over 55's!! 9's got 18-49's and 25-54's and ten's got 16-39's so technically you can't call 9 the gray hair and wrinkles network it was from 2005-2007.
Channel 10 will apparently relaunch after the olympics - wonder if that means a new logo?

Tribal Mind replies: Nein is the German word for No.

  • by Alex on July 31, 2008 at 06:58 PM

Shoopie, which comment was it that killed the appetite? Was it the thought of Shannon on this is your life, or something earlier? I'm sorry!! I hope it returned!!

Can't believe that Shannon Noll was the topic for TIYL!!! I was half joking at the suggestion!! Can't believe they sunk that low.. Must concur that Mike Munro must have quit due to that pearler. New Low, channel Nein!! I'm guessing Guy Sebastian is next week then? Or maybe Sara-Marie from Big Brother? Dear god!!

  • by Bereft Skerrick on July 31, 2008 at 08:14 PM

Re 'This Is Your Life' with Nollsy, how is it that a 30 year old has had a life to re-cap? And not a very re-cap-worthy one at that. Next will come 'This Is Your Life' with Nicy Webster..."so cast your mind back 2 years, do you remember this voice?....yes, it's the guy who did your Zoo Weekly shots, Neville!!!". Pathetic. Or maybe Mike can interview himself...
"So, they called you a 'Pasty-faced nothing, eh? Well you showed them! Years of reading cue-cards and now you're interviewing children who've done nothing about how much of nothing they've done and how they did it. You're a journalistic genius!"
"Yes, I am."
On another topic, I just can't wait for that "brand new show that's taking the WORLD by storm", 'Hole in the Wall'. Celebrities fitting through.....holes. In walls. Watch out, Nine's back. Still the one. We heart tv etc.etc..Seven must be shaking in their boots...."Come on, come on, think of something,..... I know! Mel & Kochie.......jumping through holes.....in.....floors. We'll call it 'Hole in the Floor'...."

  • by darren on August 01, 2008 at 05:59 AM

Yes, Beckala, it was the thought of Shannon Noll on TIYL - was he covered in splinters after emerging from the bottom of a barrel??
PS - thanks Cathy for the info on Gordo on ER - I reckon it's time for low GR diet - enough please.

  • by Shoopie on August 01, 2008 at 07:37 AM

Darrren, you crack me up! I, too , was shocked when I was channel surfing on Wed night and saw that no talent nit Nollsy as the Life on TIYL. Talk about overrated celebritys. Can't sing, can't talk, boring as bat ....! If that is the state of our "talent" God help Oz!
And their new show? Holes in Walls? How about Pothole in Roads? Or Bogans in Pubs? What morons are running Nein? Are they all stoned? Hey, man how about we do a show about holes??? Sheeeeesh!
And networks wonder why people arent watching anymore.

  • by em on August 01, 2008 at 07:52 AM

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's over the olympics this time round. And no offense to the girl who sings "ready to fly" but given 7 are flogging the song just about every time an ad for the games comes on, I'm rather over that song as well.
AJ - great idea about watching dvd's instead of the games, what a great time to start catching up on my evergrowing dvd collection.
The 9's say so.

Tribal Mind remarks: What a commentary on modern attention spans that you can be "over" the olympics before they've even started.

  • by Cath on August 01, 2008 at 08:10 AM

darren and em - fantastic imagery for the Nein show on holes - a very scary option....
Now Cat I have a confession - I will more than likely get sucked in to the Olympics - not a huge sports fan although I do like a good Bledisloe and last week's game was good! - Blame that on the fact I have 5 brothers.
But ignoring the hype and jinoism and just occasionally watching a good sporting feat is what snares me for the Olympics - not sure about the whole Beijing smog and security and secrecy issues but I am more likely than not to watch some of the Olympics.
However despite that I will pleased when we return to what approximates normal scheduling

Tribal Mind remarks: What a commentary on modern attention spans that you can be "over" the olympics before they've even started.

But that is half the point TM - they have not started but virtually all channels have been cra--ing on about them for weeks. It is a two week event which we have to hear about for months and I would suggest even those who are actually interested will be suffering BO fatigue before they fade from the news. That is not even mentioning the pathetic cross promotion that 7 has been squeezing into things like the Great Outdoors and even Better Homes and Gardens. At least I should get through a few more books and some DVDs because as someone pointed out avoiding 7 will not help as the other networks are rolling over and playing dead so there will be no decent alternatives.

Two ads annoying me presently? Ready to Fly? Ready to Hurl! Can You Feel It? What - the bile rising?
I'll only be watching Swimming and Athletics as an encouragement to Master 7.09 to show him what can be done.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on August 01, 2008 at 09:58 AM

Let's be clear, Tribal Mind: the NEW Cybermen are dull, but the originals are terrific. I have no idea why Russell T Davies felt the need to re-invent them.

  • by Fielding on August 01, 2008 at 10:02 AM

TM, may I ask how Q&A rated last night? Really enjoyed the show - I think it's a far better format than the dry and boring Difference of Opinion from last year. Thanks in advance.

Tribal Mind replies: 562,000.

Tribal Mind remarks: What a commentary on modern attention spans that you can be "over" the olympics before they've even started.
I know I probably sounded a bit childish with my comments, but I am not much of a sports fan, and with all the crap on tv these days there's not much to choose from. So I think I have some right in being over something before it's begun.
I think I'll give up on commenting if you're going to be sarcastic!

Tribal Mind replies: Not sarcastic. I'm already over them too -- apart from the continuing political story of how China will lose face because it is so desperate to save face.

Em @7:52 am, Nine is already showing 'Bogans in Pubs' but they call it 'Ladette to Lady'. 'Pothole in Roads' was a story on ACA a couple of weeks ago wasn't it?
I don't know what morons are running Nine, but after seeing a promo for 'Happy Gilmore' on Ten that went something like "the classic comedy you can watch over & over & over & over again" (I'm not joking), I came up with this theory for what morons are running Ten (it can be adapted for Seven & Nine):
A vast hangar-style laboratory filled with thousands of monkeys shackled to type-writers (yes, like on that episode of the Simpsons ...."It was the best of times, it was the Werbst of times? What the hell?....").
Two white-coated technicians watch through a one-way mirror, waiting for results.
'faxfaxfaxfaxfax.. BING! (that's the fax machine. The monkeys have been shown how to use it).
Nigel - "Get that fax will you Trev? What's it say?"
Trev-"Ummm...optsfgu77...meeeengrrls....oght773%%$fg7".
Nigel - "Okay, Mean Girls next Friday."
Trev - "Do you think the tape'll hold up one more time?"
Nigel - "The monkeys have spoken!!"
Trev - "Well I'll just need some sticky tape or something...."
Nigel - "New fax! Funny, it didn't make any sound this time. It says "mmkidghh....lerv...acshualllly..89%fg^.... I think that's Love Actually. Okay that's the week after next. Hugh Grant.....mmmmm."
Trev - "I worry about you sometimes Nigel."

TM, I was "over" the BOGs when Mel & Kochie started their "only 70 days to go" countdown!
...and to "em July 31, 2008 at 01:20 PM" - totally agree. We may have had our own issues with the Sydney Olympics and the indigenous issues, however at least the world was free to comment, expose and demonstrate about them!

  • by AJ on August 01, 2008 at 12:01 PM

My viewing plans for the BOG fortnight include watching season 10 of Friends, which has just arrived from EZY DVD.
It's a delicious irony I think, as I was a Friends viewer (on Nein) for the whole 9 and a half seasons, up to the SOG (Sydney Olympic Games). Nein played funny buggers and halted the series and played so-called "best of" episodes before and during the games. Otherwise known as "repeats".
By the time they resumed new episodes after the games, I was (a) out of the 7.30pm Monday habit, and (b) totally pissed off with Nein. As a result I never got to see the last episodes of a show I'd watched for over 9 years!
Thought I'd catch up with them on Foxtel, but apparently they just show season 9 over and over again. (And on Arena, the station that's now unwatchable since their new logo looks like a speech bubble.)
So Season 10 is released on DVD just in time for replacing the crummy FTA programming during these games.
Wonderful!

Dear TM I dont know if youcan help but do you or anyone know the Ratings of the wrestling show on 9 Perth and the show that follows it.
Just interested thanks

TribalMind asks: What is it called and what time and day is it on? Ditto the show that follows it.

The furure over Sam Newman's comment on last night's AFL FOOTY SHOW has been (in my view) massively misconstrued. He meant no offense by it and I say that this matter should be dropped. I think that some people are just looking for an excuse to try and get Sam off the show.
By the looks of things, Nine's audience at 11.30pm Monday to Wednesday has dropped alot without NIGHTLINE. JUST SHOOT ME! is getting a similar audience to THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN. So it appears that Seven wins this timeslot on Mondays with 30 ROCK, however I think that it is now pretty tight between the networks on Tuesdays & Wednesdays.

Tribal Mind asks: Those of us who are in Sydney have no idea what you are talking about. What did Newman say?

  • by cpandilo on August 01, 2008 at 01:37 PM

Has anyone else asked why in blazes WinHD shows the Victorian Footy Show instead of the NSW Footy Show on Thursday nights? And can someone confirm that they didn actually spend most of last night's NSW show talking about Footy?
BTW Darren you are made of genius.
TM: apparently Sam meant to say "come on here" i.e. have some female on the show, but it's claimed that he left the last e of "here".
Didn't see the incident, and Sam is as big a tool as Vyle, however I wonder whether he actually made a comment that was misheard by others who have their minds in the gutter.

Oh, darren, think of the havoc you could wreak if you turned to the dark side....
Speaking of the dark side, what is the world coming to when Today Tonight and Home and Away rate 2 & 3??? Forget the "meters in nursing homes" theory, I'ld suggest zoos.

  • by Shoopie on August 01, 2008 at 04:33 PM

S, I hate to break it to you, but season 10 of Friends has been on dvds for a few years!

Tribal Mind remarks: Indeed, the boxed set of all ten seasons is one of the great comedy bargains. In its time, it was a beautiful construction.

  • by Beckala on August 01, 2008 at 04:52 PM

Hi TM,
Could you let us know how the non live NRL went last night, as I think it might of have receive an even worse figures every week, also how did Blackball go against it on ch7?
Thanks

TM replies: Dead football 201,000 in Sydney, 96,000 in Brisbane. Blackball 168,000 and 88,000.

  • by Manci on August 02, 2008 at 09:33 AM

Alex I said you were on drugs because you said Nine was doing great on Monday nights and getting back on top. Clearly they were not and you mentioned nothing about the year in general so maybe you are on drugs or an employee of Ch 9. Ch 7 has smashed Ch 9 this week as I predicted.
Criminal Minds on 7 is not a repeatathon. There are 2 new shows a week.

  • by Michael on August 02, 2008 at 11:45 AM

7 & the Olympics.Their audience could drop .I saw last Olympics had 1/3 of its time on air devoted to very repetetive ads , 1/3 to talking heads , 1/3 to events but very selective coverage with many repeats .This time my PVR will be in full use & i will zap thru the 7 personalities/ads.Unless 7 handle the coverage well & dont alienate viewers as they did last time, their viewers may drop.

Saturday night before I settle down to a DVD seems an obscure enough time to ask a dumb question- have they changed The Simpsons opening titles recently? I am not referring to the incredibly elaborate versions of the end shot of family on the lounge used this season. I mean the actual cartoons. A couple of weeks back I looked at the sequence with Lisa playing the sax in particular and thought either they have redone the whole opening or they (the artwork Simpsons) have actually evolved over the years? There has to be a Simpsons tragic who enlighten this poor confused individual.

  • by Cat on August 02, 2008 at 07:28 PM

TM, do you know the ratings for Saturday night AFL - Geelong v Richmond broadcast in Sydney on Channel 10 last night at 10:30pm.

Tribal Mind replies: I thought I'd included all last night's biffo, but there's always one I missed. I've now been through the chart for Sydney and I assume the program you mean is something described by Ten as "Saturday late night AFL", which got 33,000 viewers. Is that a good figure or a bad figure?

  • by Dave on August 03, 2008 at 10:15 AM

Cheers TM. Thanks for posting what appears to be the average for late night AFL replays in Sydney not involving the Swans.

TM asks: You're welcome, but what does the figure MEAN? Does it make AFL fans happy or unhappy?

  • by Dave on August 03, 2008 at 11:19 AM

Re Bob (Robin) Askin. I am in my early 60's & I grew up in the Bob Askin era. I believe he actually changed his name from Robin to Bob, because he was know through out the state of NSW as "Robbing Bastard" because of his parties fiscal meaness towards all of the constituents in NSW. Someone out there may wish to correct me if this wasn't so.

DD replies: He changed his name from Robin to Robert when he got his knighthood, because he thought "Sir Robin Askin" sounded effeminate.

  • by Kevin Berry on August 03, 2008 at 11:50 AM

To Bereft Skerrick: WinHD (and Channel Nine in NSW, ACT and QLD in general) shows the Victorian (AFL) Footy Show instead of the NSW Footy Show on Thursday nights to give them an alternative. There are AFL fans in these regions (albeit in small numbers) who don't want to wait until after 11pm to watch the AFL Footy Show, and Nine realises that. This also explains why Footy Classified is shown at 10.30pm Mondays in NSW, ACT and QLD on 9HD.

  • by Johnson on August 03, 2008 at 12:48 PM

TM asks: You're welcome, but what does the figure MEAN? Does it make AFL fans happy or unhappy?
Hard to say without knowing the figures for the other programs on at the same time as well as the fact the game did not involve the Swans. Do you know the figures for the other programs on from 10:30pm - 1:30am? I guess it would be interesting to see the AFL peak figure as well before making a judgement.

Tribal Mind replies: That research sounds likely to take up much more spare time than I have.
