The ratings race, updated 10am Monday
Just as Mussolini made the trains run on time in Italy by redefining the concept of lateness, Channel Seven is able to announce it won the first half of the year by redefining the concept of prime time. By looking at viewing habits between 6pm and 10.30 pm, Seven can claim a slightly higher audience share than Nine for the first half. It's only the pesky industry standard of 6pm to midnight that makes Nine look good and Seven look bad.

In fact, Seven didn't need any redefinition to win last week. Between 6pm and midnight it averaged 27.3 per cent of the audience (thanks to City Homicide, RSPCA Animal Rescue and Seven News Sunday), while Nine got 26.3 per cent (thanks to 60 Minutes , Domestic Blitz and Nine news Sunday).

Ten got 21.5 (thanks to NCIS and Jamie Oliver's Eat To Save Your Life, but no thanks to Big Brother, which was unable even to attract viewers curious to see its death throes); ABC got 17.6 (thanks to Spicks and Specks, The Gruen Transfer, the news, Silent Witness and Doctor Who) and SBS got 7.2 (thanks to Top Gear on 922,000 and Inspector Rex on 411,000). Nine, not above its own bit of redefining, announced yesterday that it had won the week with viewers aged 25-54.

COMMENTS

Where was tour de france, you mentioned last week they have made quite an investment in it, fair to say it's not paying off?

Tribal Mind replies: Something called Tour de France Stage 14 got 337,000 and TDF Highlights got 197,000 for SBS on Saturday.

re: rich wanted to know the figure for KING OF THE HILL last week. TM, KOTH airs Thursday nights at 11.25pm on SEVEN.
TM, you also asked in an earlier post regarding the boxing the previous Sunday: It was scheduled on TEN from 4-8am It was Klitschko v Thompson. So it presumably got less than 75,000 hey? Though of course that excludes people who would've watched it in pubs.
TM, can you publish the figures on Wednesday morning for CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM which is on Tuesday night at midnight on Nine?

Tribal Mind replies: Thanks for the reminder about CYE. I will set my recorder, although I suspect this is a season already released on DVD.

Wow, I leave the country for 3 weeks and come back only to learn that BB has been axed. Makes you wonder about the power of the Pope! Miracles really do exist!

re: Curb Your Enthusiasm. Yes, all six seasons have been released on DVD here. Nine are up to the 3rd & 2nd last episodes of Season Five which they'll show tomorrow.
TWENTY GOOD YEARS, the sitcom starring Arrested Development's Jeffrey Tambour & 3rd Rock From The Sun's John Lithgow premieres this Thursday night @ 11.30pm on 9HD. This series only lasted 13 episodes (nine unaired in the US).v
Also, RULES OF ENGAGEMENT & BACK TO YOU return this Thursday from 7.30 on TEN. Next week's LIPSTICK JUNGLE double episode is the season final and SEVEN will also be showing a double episode of PRISON BREAK next week - also its' season final.

I think it will make 1.2+million - as people tune in to see the final episode.

The on-line ad that popped up when I looked at Who We Are was an ad for Vile and Tacki Ho's radio show. Obviously the advertisers do not read this blog!

Tribal Mind replies: Obviously they do.

TM, do you have the figures for the AFL - Carlton v Sydney broadcast in Sydney and Brisbane yesterday on Channel 7? Cheers

Tribal Mind replies: In Sunday's chart now

  • by Dave on July 21, 2008 at 06:53 PM

Since Ten's 8.30 or 9.30 pm Friday night film choices have been a running joke amongst blog readers (in how they repeat the same films every 3 or 4 months), their August 1 choice is the 2004 Bridget Jones 2 film, which they've already repeated about 30 times.

  • by Burt on July 21, 2008 at 08:11 PM

Can you supply figures for the Carlton vs Sydney ratings in Sydney and Brisbane (it was only free-to-air in those two cities) and the Perth ratings for Freo vs Melbourne. Only Perth got this match on free-to-air.
Cheers.

If Seven are saying the Lipstick Jungle show on July 27 is a double episode and that it's the finale, they're lying as season 1 has 7 eps and as it started June 29, that totals 6 eps shown. I know it's rated poorly for them, but they should've flown Brooke Shields out to Aus, to help promote it.

  • by Sally on July 22, 2008 at 10:37 AM

Heard someone on the radio the other day deriding the use of 'boatorcade' last week during W(orld) of Y(oung) D(orks) and whole-heartedly agreed, only to hear later the same day someone say 'rotorcade'. That's what a few years at Journalism skool teaches you.Someone needs a thesaurus.
Thank God it's all over, Channel Seven & Nine can put their helicopters back in storage and get back to churning out the high quality incisive journalism they're so admired for. Or... maybe one more story on whether the Pope wears Prada?

Ah, you know when Big Brother has tanked: they don't even let the final episode go overtime to milk the ratings for all they've got. I was quite shocked when Burn Notice started within 5 minutes of its advertised commencement time!

Good to see BN back, although I hope they never try to make Michael emote again. It wasn't pretty.

  • by tqd on July 22, 2008 at 12:29 PM

hey TM r u able to get figures on how sevens early news at 530am is going against the first half hour of the today show on 9 (from 530-6am)
7 is making a big deal about their early news service they must see today as a competitive threat... i say more like people are sick of sunrise!!

Tribal Mind replies: I"ll try to make sense of that separation in tomorrow's chart.

  • by dave on July 22, 2008 at 12:56 PM

Another movie series which has been repeated the Back to the Future trilogy, sure I am a fan of the movies but some variety would be good.
I am most likely wrong but a couple of movies which haven't been repeated too much are Scent of a Woman,The Goodbye Girl, High Fidelity,Rain Man. I am sure there are a few more and I could be wrong with the above .

Sure it has been shown a number of times but it was great to see a classic like The Wizard of Oz again. I think the Hilary Duff movie on Sat 19/07 was a first time on free to air, so maybe Nine has a fellow blogger ?

What movies would fellow tribal minders like to see. It would be interesting if the suggestions start to be shown

  • by Shelly on July 22, 2008 at 01:03 PM

Thanks Randwick Geoff for giving the "programming department" over at Channel Not Even Trying a free ride. Now what are they going to do for the next 8 weeks? I note that even the last BB episode didn't top the ratings - I thought millions may have turned in to dance on its grave.

Why City Homicide rates so well bemuses me as it is terrible, unbelievable and lame. Last night was a perfect example. It's a shame because I really want to like it and the 4 younger cast members are good, Shane and Noni not so much tho.

  • by davo on July 22, 2008 at 08:06 PM

Sorry about the new moniker - there are a lot of AJs writing on the TM site at the moment.

I know we are all tempted to bag our own...I've been guilty of this in the past. But having just been released from the reality-show nightmare that was BB, can we please give local drama a bit of a fair go. City Homicide may not reach great cinematic weight, but it has got to be better than all the reality shows put together.
On another note: Goody, goody gumdrops! It's Wednesday - S&S, Gruen & Hollowmen!!! ABC givin' the FTAs grief in it's usual quality way....Now these are local shows we need to get right behind.

  • by AJ -the real AJ on July 23, 2008 at 07:08 AM

For Prison Break viewers, just a reminder that tonight's episode has been shunted to 10.20pm. Only three eps to go until the Olympics (next week being a double ep).

  • by arthur on July 23, 2008 at 09:01 AM

Anyone looking forward to 'Happy Bertday' (heehee.... 'Bertday'....someone's a genius at wordplay over at Nine) tonight? I thought Hallowe'en was in October.
Geez, Tuesday's an awful night for TV. I foolishly had a look at 'Wipeout' and now I've looked at it I've had enough. While watching Americans hurting themselves is slightly entertaining, it'll be the same next week and the week after and the week after that. A bit like NCIS (back to back repeated episodes? Seriously?) and Two & a half Men (more repeats) and Bored Security (more) and movies on Ten (more).
I think everyone should check in on their neighbours. There may be bloated fly-blown corpses sitting in Jason recliners all over the country with their televisions left on.
Or maybe people are dumb.

  • by darren on July 23, 2008 at 11:28 AM

Quite right 'real AJ'. City Homicide deserves a fair go. Good to see 'All Saints' scoring big ratings again too. I hope it wasn't just because they featured a storyline involving an injured pole dancer. :P It was avery funny episode last night written by Jeff Truman, whose writing credits appear on many of the top dramas and always provides some brilliant laughs.

  • by J Bar on July 23, 2008 at 11:56 AM

TM, could you please let us know how "Walk Like A Man" (SBS 7.30pm) went last night? It was a decent little doco, if a little amateurish...
Thanks

Tribal Mind replies: It was number 87 program for the day, with 155,000. There may not be a future for a regular show about gay rugby league players.

  • by cronker on July 23, 2008 at 01:21 PM

An American friend of mine said yesterday how glad he was BB had finally been axed. He said he had never lived in an Australia that was BB free and was looking forward to it. And he hoped that Ten would come up with something worth watching. I shook my head sadly and walked away. I didnt want to dash the poor guy's hopes. I figured he has suffered enough!

  • by em on July 23, 2008 at 03:12 PM

Darren Tuesday nights are when I catch up with 30 Rock, Enough Rope and Monk. Iadmit I watch both All Saints and NCIS (when not repeats!) Avoid Nein now every night - there is nothing in their schedule presently to interest me.

Hopefully I am not a dumb one nor a corpse! Also use time to read SMH and complete the latest Sudoku puzzle.

Have to share - my sister was shocked on the weekend to find out Amazing Race is a farce! my reply - of course it is but it is still fun to watch very silly Americans running around foreign countries shouting out "English!!?!"

Movies I would like to see on TV... Hmmmm A golden years effort like ABC2 perhaps - Hitchcock anyone - they are watchable even for the thousandth time.

Or if you really want romantic comedies - give me screwball comedies any day - Bringing up Baby, the Awful Truth, the Philadelphia Story.. I know there is a theme to this and they are all black and white!

  • by Cathy on July 23, 2008 at 03:26 PM

How dis the Gay RU program rate last night? (7.30 pm SBS)

Tribal Mind replies: See my answer to Cronker, above.

  • by Fitzy on July 23, 2008 at 04:22 PM

Cathy - do tell. What do you mean by Amazing Race is a farce? My wife is very upset and needs to know.

  • by Neil on July 23, 2008 at 07:03 PM

About 'Love, Actually' on Friday night, I was in fits of laughter when I saw Ten advertise it last night as "the romantic Britcom you can never get enough of". Don't they feel embarrassed? I feel embarrassed for them. How stoopid do they think people are? It's like advertising a 'special encore screening' (i.e: we've spent so much money on this crap show we haven't got any left for something else to fill this slot, so here it is again), or 'special movie-length episode (i.e: two repeats squashed together for the same reason as 'a special encore screening'). People KNOW what you're doing!!! (although they still watch).
Time to change their tagline from "Ten, Seriously" to something like "Ten, Dejavu", or "Ten, Repeat, Ten, Repeat, Ten" or "Ten movies, that's all we've got".

  • by darren on July 24, 2008 at 05:58 AM

The only problem I have with City Homicide is that I haven't come across that many cops who speak with north shore accents (darnce, charnce, plarnts).
In fact I haven't come across any.

Tribal Mind remarks: It's Melbourne, Jake.

  • by bobmar28 on July 24, 2008 at 07:16 AM

Anyone else seen the ad for the new Nein drama "The Strip" I think it is called? It is advertised as a new police show set on the Gold Coast and starring Aaron Jefferies from McCleods. What a lot of doss that looks, and a complete rip off of CSI Miami, even down to the cheesy ads with Jefferies even doing the sunglasses thing. I could not believe it. In fact, I couldnt help laughing and shaking my head. Can't they come up with anything more original? Oh, silly me! It is Nein I am talking about after all. They see Seven has a hit with City Homicide so of course, do a "new" cop show. I think I am shaking my head in disbelief so often now I will need to start having regular appts with my Chiropractor! I am becoming a Grumpy Old Woman. And proud of it!! Hmmph!

  • by em on July 24, 2008 at 08:32 AM

Cathy wrote: Or if you really want romantic comedies - give me screwball comedies any day - Bringing up Baby, the Awful Truth, the Philadelphia Story.. I know there is a theme to this and they are all black and white...
Yes but as themes go Cary Grant is a pretty nice one - particularly with Katharine Hepburn in tow. Bringing up Baby is one I have been trying without success to get on region 4 DVD (like all the Fred & Gingers they are all available o/s but not here).
I cannot fathom the mentalities that have 30 Rock hidden at 11.30 but 2 and 1/2 Men in prime time (I know they are different stations). Mind you I hate to think if it was in prime time what the Ch 7 advertising would have done with the episode of 30 Rock a few weeks back with David Schwimmer (sp?), Meredith Viera and Al Gore (off to save a whale in trouble). A psychotic break in the soundbooth is my guess. I luckily miss 90% of ads thanks to my DVD HDD but promos for shows still seem to seep into my consciousness and produce night terrors I thought I had outgrown 30 years ago.

  • by Cat on July 24, 2008 at 08:56 AM

Neil and Michelle who asked what I meant by the Amazing Race being a farce is that thye don't race as much as shown - they wait around for the crew and for the locals to sign waivers to agree to have their faces shown on the TV - plane tickets are actually for 4 people - cameraman and producer as well as the team - they have to record the reading of the clues and don't just rush off - there is heaps more like that..
But besides all the guff it is still fun.

  • by Cathy on July 24, 2008 at 08:59 AM

Does anyone know what Channel Ten plans to do with NCIS? I know there are about 4 episodes left for the season.
I think we'll have to download it if isn't aired soon...

Tribal Mind replies: All the networks are saving their best stuff for after the olympics.

  • by Catie on July 24, 2008 at 09:17 AM

Occasionally Channel Lather, Rinse, Repeat, Shirl does have some intelligent programming. I watched the Fowl Dinners last night. Definitely eye opening. Mind, I missed the "ABC 3" last night partly due to this and partly due to Year 2 homework.
But as for this "the romantic Britcom you can never get enough of". Yeah. Right. Sure. And Vyle was a good choice of BB host. Channel Delusional.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on July 24, 2008 at 09:29 AM

Darren, absolutely agree with the taglines - loving them already. I saw the ad for "The Strip" as well, and cracked up at how they were marketing it as something cool, sassy and hot - the voiceover said it all, especially how he read "The Strip". I remember a few years ago, ABC was showing a lot of screwball comedies, including Bringing Up Baby. They were also airing Fred & Ginger classics. I'm still waiting for them on dvd too. Hopefully they'll air them again, much better than all the repeats we're getting.

  • by Kym on July 24, 2008 at 10:38 AM

Cat - I got my DVD copy of Bringing Up Baby from the UK as my player accepted all regions and as UK is also PAL figured a region 2 would be good - at that time I also got the box set of the Thin Man series with William Powell and Irene Dunne.
And TM I concur with you comment on The Hollowmen being somewhat repetitive .. although last week ep on ambassador the to Vatican was remarkably psychic!

"Tribal Mind replies: It was number 87 program for the day, with 155,000. There may not be a future for a regular show about gay rugby league players."
TM, it was about gay Rugby Union players, not Rugby League players.

Tribal Mind remarks: Ah, that explains everything.

Cathy on July 23 @03:26 PM: When I said "maybe 'people' are dumb" I didn't have anyone from here in mind. And corpses don't type so we can rule that one out too. I've just run out of positive uplifting ways to explain "people's" viewing habits ("maybe they haven't seen that episode", "maybe they don't have anything else to do", "maybe the paint's already dry", "maybe they're baby-sitting dozens of small children with repeats of 'Border Security"). "People are dumb" seems to me finally the best way to look at this little sample of human behaviour. I don't know who these "people" are. No-one I know likes to sit down night after night and watch crap and then watch it again a few weeks later and then again a few weeks after that. Who does that? Dumb "people" that's who. And they're all Oztam guinea-pigs.

Cat, you do know you can get your DVD player programmed to run all regions, don't you? If the instructions are not on your Users Guide, either download them from the manufacturer's website or get your friendly nerd at the electronic store you bought the thing from to do it for you. Then you can order any DVD you want from Amazon, regardless of which region they say it won't work in.

I don't know if _all_ DVD players can be made region-free, but certainly the overwhelming majity of makes and models can. One option is to Google "DVD hack codes", or to do a similar search with your make and model details included; that should find you the information you need. Generally, all you'll need to do to to unlock your machine's region coding is hit certain buttons on the player or remote in a certain sequence (the aforementioned "hack code") - you certainly won't have to actually monkey around with the insides of the machine itself.

  • by Mark on July 24, 2008 at 03:06 PM

Thanks Rupert I do know and alas wish it was that simple. The first fairly cheap DVD player I bought came with a plain white slip of paper inside the box (but separate to the rest of the packaging) that explained how to set the region code to 0. But then it got moved to the bedroom when I bought the DVD HDD recorder (which to be fair I do use endlessly). It though is unfortunately designed to make the overriding of the region code ridiculously hard and you actually have to buy some remote device to override the programming (all the region code hacking sites say the same thing). It really cheeses me off because if the %@*$&@ companies would just release Bringing up Baby and the complete Fred & Ginger here I would happily pay for them but no they block you from playing overseas product and refuse to release them here!!! End of rant.

For Top Gear fans - in a few weeks (may be even next week) they will be showing the first race the boys ever entered. When Hammond and Clarkson are standing on either side of their race car talking note what is on stencilled on the open doors. Then wonder at how much money these grown men are being paid to have childish fun. I am not complaining - just jealous.

Finally why ABC are you hoarding a series of Spooks that is nearly a year old? Series 7 is due to air in the U.K. in September and you still have not shown 6!

  • by Cat on July 24, 2008 at 03:20 PM

Thanks Darren for the feedback on dumb people.

By the way for those intrigued in what ch Shirl Repeat is showing friday week - the movie is Bridget Jones - Edge of Reason - colour me unsurprised!

  • by Cathy on July 24, 2008 at 04:29 PM

Gee, Darren, I think I have to disagree with you re corpses don't type ... there seem to be plenty of walking corpses appearing on TV at the moment ... well, people who have as much personality as a corpse...

Will have to agree re Hollowmen - yes, it's clever but it isn't Frontline although there does seem to be some parallels, ie, Rob Sitch - dumb, Santo - nerdy, Murph - voice of reason as per Alison Whyte's character in FL. I gave up and spent a constructive 20 mins at the kitchen sink.

Just wondering how the repeats of Bondi Rescue going?
and how do they compare with BB?

Tribal Mind replies: I'll include them in the next chart.

  • by James on July 24, 2008 at 07:12 PM

It looks like Ch 9 is running out of steam and Ch 7 may win the year after all. Maybe constant repeats of Wipeout and Ramsay will help.

  • by Michael on July 25, 2008 at 09:43 AM

I agree a little with Cathy, can't help feeling that the Amazing Race is not exactly 100% sponataneous and perhaps open to suggestions of manipulation, particularly with those "non-elimination" rounds and when they are revealed. Remember a huge stink a few races ago when a plane had boarded and the door had closed but the airline brought it back so the 2 racers could board it. Yep, they do that for all their passengers, don't they. Still, as Cathy said, I enjoy watching it.
by Cat on July 24, 2008 at 03:20 PM

I used to like Spooks but have to admit becoming a little inured to it. I know that most TV requires some level of suspension of disbelief but to have 5 key agents able to stop all major terrorist activities while easily beating London gridlock traffic whilst their chief engineer can solve any and every technical problem put before him is a little too much for any credibility. So I personally am in no hurry for new eps.
Interesting ad in the Australian Media section, HUGE full page ad of Ch 9 crowing about winning the ratings in two time slots, and increasing its share of the overall market. Total PR exercise of course, just before the Olympics coverage, but an interesting use of "lies, damn lies and statistics". As TM pointed out in an earlier column, the ratings stats can be manipulated to suit any of the networks and then they are all winning something. (I've of course paraphrase TM)

  • by kate on July 25, 2008 at 09:52 AM

Hey TM,
Do you have the figures for a very funny King of the Hill last night?
Thnx :)

Tribal Mind replies: It does not appear among the top 120 programs for yesterday, which means either that it got less than 75,000 viewers across the mainland capitals, or that the network has not listed it with OzTAM.

  • by rich on July 25, 2008 at 10:17 AM

Am giving up on TV tonight and heading out to see The Dark Knight. My son went last night and raved about it, he personally nominated Heath for the Oscar. Any comments by others on here? Has anyone seen it - loved/hated it?

Tribal Mind replies: To answer your question, go to the other column on this site by clicking here.

Nine has axed Sunday and Nightline
Sunday will be replaced with an hour news service from 8AM
While Nightline will be replaced with more news updates...
How were the ratings going for these two programs? Compared to its competitors...
I know that Weekend Sunrise was beating Sunday but how was Nightline doing - compared to Seven Late News on Fridays and Ten's News and Sports Tonight?

Tribal Mind replies: I'll include them in the full week's ratings when I publish them on Sunday afternoon.

  • by James on July 25, 2008 at 02:55 PM

TM,
Do you know how How I Met Your Mother and My Name is Earl did last night, when they screened only in Perth? Would give a truer picture of network performance in the 7:30 hour. Thanks in advance.

Tribal Mind replies: Earl 168,000, Mother 148,000.

  • by Samuel on July 25, 2008 at 04:27 PM

Cant believe Sunday is gone, it used to be such a great programme.
Kerry must be spinning in his grave !!!

  • by Don on July 25, 2008 at 05:31 PM

Just wondering if you have the numbers for the finales of Mother and Earl in Perth last night? Would be much appreciated.

Tribal Mind replies: See my answer to Samuel, above.

What chance has the NRL footy show have of surviving the 9 axe?
180,000 in Sydney is pretty shocking for weeknight primetime.

Tribal Mind replies: But it will rise, as it does each year, when we approach grand final time

  • by Ryano on July 25, 2008 at 05:56 PM

Gallop and Gyngell have confirmed the NRL Footy Show is safe for 2009 at least.

Nine has axed Sunday and Nightline
So does this mean that the Ch 9 in-house promotions team will have to find an alternative for the "who's who of news" slogan. Would have thought it far better to axe the 4.30pm bulletin than Nightline? Especially as those in time to watch the 4.30pm would not watch the 6pm (in "proper" prime time) ... Just a thought. TM, does the 4.30 channel 9 news win its time-slot? Against the B & B ?

  • by Kate on July 26, 2008 at 04:56 PM

Nexr Friday's 9:30pm movie on Ch Lather Rinse Repeat Shirl will be a 10pm'er. Star Wars Episode I. Master 7.08 is thrilled but he'll be tucked up tightly in bed. He'll have to comfort himself with 2 weeks of Sontarans on Doctor Who.
The Confidential Cut Downs are getting better.
Re Footy Show: for the 30 seconds I watched it this week I vaguely remember the panel saying that the newly-frog-legged Sonny Bill Williams was heading to Uralla for some country game. Perhaps he made a wrong turn and hit the Internatial Terminal instead of domestic?
