The ratings race, updated 10 am Monday
dibley.jpg What comes first over the Easter break: the crappy TV shows or the small audiences? Australians are in the middle of a fortnight in which the commercial networks remove the most popular programs from the schedule and replace them with repeats or rubbish, on the assumption that people on holidays don't care what's on the box.

Either as cause or effect of this policy, viewing of broadcast TV was down five per cent last week -- with the notable exception of Kitchen Nightmares on Channel Nine. It thrived on publicity from federal parliament, where its host, London chef Gordon Ramsay, was accused of over-using "the f-word" and "the c-bomb".

Channel Seven drew on the resources of the ABC to fill its schedule, gaining 1.2 million viewers for a repeat of The Vicar of Dibley and 1.1 million for a repeat of Seven Wonders of the Industrial World. It thus won the week, averaging 27.4 per cent of the prime time audience, while Nine got 25.5 per cent, Ten 24.4, ABC 17.2 and SBS 5.5. The ABC did best with Doc Martin (1.2 m) so expect to see it repeated on Seven soon.

Poor old Channel Ten. The one night of the year it wins handsomely -- and it's not counted in official ratings! A combination of dancing, dieting and car racing gave Ten a 32.4 per cent share of the prime time audience on the first night of the Easter silly season. Nine and Seven will say Ten only won because they weren't trying, but it's still an impressive performance.

Seven won Tuesday and Wednesday, but at this point in the week Ten and Seven are neck and neck on 27.6 per cent of the prime time audience with Nine on 24.4, ABC on 15.0 and SBS on 5.5.

Last week a swearing chef saved Nine's bacon. With no cricket, no Underbelly in Melbourne, The Moment of Truth pulling a mere 844,000 on Tuesday and The Cashmere Mafia sinking to 851,000 viewers just as production was cancelled in America, Nine was at risk of massive humiliation.

But Gordon Ramsay attracted 1.2 million on Tuesday and 1.5 million on Thursday (when does he get time to cook in his restaurant?). This allowed Nine to average a respectable 27.6 per cent of the prime time audience. Seven got 28.2 per cent, Ten 22.5, ABC 16.6 and SBS 5.1.

The ABC scored best with Doc Martin on 1.23m and SBS scored best with Mythbusters on 511,000 (while the smartest show currently on television, Newstopia, was found by 201,000).

Now begins the Easter silly season, when for two weeks the stations behave as if nobody is watching - a self-fulfilling prophecy.

COMMENTS

Had just finished downloading the latest Lost yesterday when a friend rang from New Jersey and in the course of the convo she asked if I watched Lost. She tells me that in the States ABC has taken to showing the previous week's episode before the current week. The previous episode however is shown with subtitles that point out things you might have missed and makes snarky comments about what is happening in a scene. Interesting approach but kind of suits Lost I think.

The last of the Oceanic Six is no surprise and neither is the returning individual but I was surprised by a familiar face. I must admit I have no idea what shows he has been in here as I only know his face (and name) from ads and what the ads were for has not stuck in my mind. Grant Bowler.

You forgot to mention Terminator sinking to abysmal 661,000 viewers.

  • by J Bar on March 17, 2008 at 09:14 AM

Can someone explain what's happened with 60 Minutes??! Nine has crucified the news value of just about every other current affairs program on its schedule, and 60 Mins was the only one left with a semblance of sanity....AND it rated well in 2007. But someone has stepped in and turned it into tabloid trash: Confessions of a Cannibal, Papparazzi Profile...blah blah. It's shameful and unnecessary. Can someone please explain?? I would understand it if the show was failing but from memory of this blog it was one of 9's only successes last year.

  • by NK on March 17, 2008 at 01:05 PM

Does anyone know why we're getting non-ratings now, when school holidays aren't until the second half of April? I thought the non-ratings period followed the school holidays more than the public holidays.
I suppose no sign of The Yellow House (ABC2, 8:30pm last night) in the ratings? No worries if there isn't, but it was nice to see John Simm (Sam Tyler in Life on Mars) in yet another role. And nice to see ABC2 widen its horizons a bit and get away from all the JJJ/music stuff (which I do enjoy, but it's nice to have variety).

"Can someone explain what's happened with 60 Minutes??! "
Trash rates. Just look at ACA and TT. Appalling tabloid TV, yet always near the top of the ratings ladder.

Tribal Mind replies: School holidays have nothing to do with it. There is always a "non-ratings period" around Easter, dating back to the time when ratings were measured by people who went around handing out "viewing diaries" to households. The collectors didn't want to work over the easter break, so they dropped the ratings for two weeks.
Even though audiences are now measured all the time by people meters connected to phones, the stations have stuck with the "non-ratings" ritual..

  • by tqd on March 17, 2008 at 01:38 PM

Easter shenanigans. W & G got chased off the schedule by a were-rabbit searching for an invisible ink map on the back of the US constitution. VOD gets promoted to a longer gig - Sunday Evensong. The dirty, sexy, moneyed, desperate housewives have left on a shop-till-you-drop Easter pilgrimage. AD and FG might just be lost in a time warp. Seven wonders what it will find in the ABC's recycle bin for it's bulk-erased Wednesday and Thursday nights. Some morning frost has already been found but it rarely thaws evenly, an episode here, an episode there. The notoriously unreliable Tardis, the WHO-mobile, has delivered Sam to Thursday. Has Clint Eastwood really learnt how to drop-kick the panel of southern boof-heads into next week ? There's nothing like a good Friday night of biffo. But, don't panic, there's more biffo and splashing about on Saturday. Have a pun-filled holiday.
Les.

Well tqd, I may well have watched The Yellow House (ABC2, 8:30pm last night) if I'd known John Simm was in it!
(Or at least recorded it)

Funny how the ABC runs promos for just a few shows, over and over again ad nauseum, but forgets to alert us to something really interesting.

Or is it my fault 'cause I hardly watch the ABC at all these days?

  • by Sal on March 17, 2008 at 03:35 PM

TM,
Any figures for The Einstein Factor or Compass last night? Thank heavens the ABC doesn't observe non-ratings.
Thanks.

Tribal Mind replies: EF 645,000; C 235,000.

I might sound like i am 9-bashing, but tonight's Royal special about William and Kate Middleton is beyond woeful. It's another tragedy - Nine's behind-the-scenes royal series, narrated by Cate Blanchett, has so far been fantastic. Then the network, typically, cashes in with a mid-series farce where journalists interview other journalists. Is there anything cheaper and nastier in documentary-making? And what's with the presenter's narration - long, boring diatribes and a voice that's like nails on a blackboard. Bring back Cate!

  • by NK on March 17, 2008 at 06:50 PM

TM,
Really enjoyed Who Do You Think You Are on SBS last night, about comedian Vic Reeves. How did it go in the ratings?
Thanks.

Tribal Mind replies: Less well than usual - about 350,000.

  • by Ryan on March 17, 2008 at 09:20 PM

TM,
Do you have any ratings for Nine's Sunday Football? Thanks in advance.

I didn't see any promos, it just got an excellent review in The Guide on Sunday. Piqued my interest because of the afore-mentioned John Simm, but also because I had no idea that Paul Gaugin spent any time whatsoever with Vincent van Gogh.

Just so Burn Notice fans know (as I stated last week), tonight's episode isn't really the show's season 1 finale, as there's 2 eps left. Had Ten screened the first two eps as a double episode when they first aired it and slot 2 doubole eps tonight, I'm not sure why they couldn't have just finished properly screening it's first season.

TM, did I imagine your column re Weet-Bix? I can't find it.

Tribal Mind replies: I wrote it in August 2007, so it would be in the August archive, which appears down the right hand side of the page. Or google "david dale" and "weet-bix". Why are you seeking it?

  • by Shoopie on March 18, 2008 at 01:15 PM

Isnt 9 scraping the bottom of the barrel with the trash it had on last night? Who gives a fig about Willliam and Kate? I wouldnt cross the street to see them or any of the Royals. Dont 9 have anything better to show?

And writers here are correct about 60 mins. What used to be an interesting , well done current affairs show has deteriorated to another tabloid trash show. What a great shame. Nein used to be a network that took pride in it's journalistic integrity. Not any more.

Kerry Packer must be rolling around in his grave.

I think I need trauma counselling after STYetc elim's last night. I was totally distraught when Camilla was summarily dismissed although for a moment I thought she had won the coveted Gold Logie. The acting skills of the judges are awesome (are they auditioning for Neighbours?)... all three reduced to tears eliminating 2 dancers from a competition. My mind is already boggling at the thought of the final 2 - probably have to call for the screens.
I think it is a toss-up between Jack and Rhys. Graeme is a sook and I just want to belt Anthony around the head with a piece of 4 x 2.
No, em, Nein don't have anything better to show....perhaps they could follow 7's lead and show ancient BBC shows that have already been shown on ABC countless times over the years. Viewers won't notice and if they do, who cares.
Ohh, the Olympic Games - cannot wait - brought to me by Ch 7 and their... drum roll ...broadcast partner.... priceless

  • by Shoopie on March 18, 2008 at 05:46 PM

In a way, 60 Minutes is worse the TT and ACA. At least they don't have any pretensions.

  • by Simo on March 18, 2008 at 10:57 PM

Sunrise -v- ACA - the first round. Apparently yesterday during Sunrise's live outside broadcast, ACA brought down disgruntled contestants from that Bingo show, claiming that they were still owed money. Too funny! Sunrise are claiming that ACA looked like the losers, in that they are so desperate for stories that they are jumping on Sunrise's coat-tails!

  • by Beckala on March 19, 2008 at 07:13 AM

The thing that is most annoying about t.v, is how all the free to air channels (and sometimes pay), have commercials at exactly the same time! Not sure if its due to the timing of the programs or a conspiracy. I say conspiracy!

  • by Jazz on March 19, 2008 at 08:13 AM

I stopped watching "42" Minutes years ago, too many puff pieces. I'm not surprised it's stooped to tabloid journalism. Then again, if you want serious investigative journalism 4 Corners is the place to watch.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on March 19, 2008 at 10:15 AM

Wow, Nein had the most watched show last night but only finished third for the night after dropping an incredible 750,000 viewers after Kitchen Nightmares finished.
Methinks that Sarah Connor will be terminated by the time the ratings period resumes.
It shall be interesting to see how the Underbelly marathon rates tonight. The series is great but there is no way I'll be watching the repeats so soon.

David,
May I please ask how The Mafia went in the ratings on Monday, and Foreign Correspondent last night? Both were quite intriguing this week. Thank you.

Channel surfing late last night I came across a sight to see. On ABC(1) after 11pm. David Tennant singing a duet with some guy. And doing the Tango with him. Singing "These Boots Are Made For Walking". The show was "Blackpool" - y'know the one that Viva Laughlin poorly ripped off.
Did anyone else catch this? Further still TM, how did it rate?

Tribal Mind replies: 76,000.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on March 20, 2008 at 10:08 AM

At least we have "Life on Mars" tonight to look forward to. Not much else worth bothering about . No Lost and repeats of Medium. Networks obviously think no one watches TV the week before and after Easter.
Anyway, Happy Easter to my fellow bloggers. And of course to you too, TM!

Hi J Bar - I've been whingeing about all of these shows for months on this blog and surprisingly haven' had very many bites but glad you raise it again - I thought I was the only one who found their constant bating of each other manipulative and insulting to viewers - they both realise if they have a 'dig' at each other, some people are going to watch - they've obviously run out of story ideas so instead of creating their own turn on each other! - its junk TV in the extreme - can you imagine Jana Wendt who used to host A CURRENT AFFAIR actually chasing TODAY TONIGHT for not paying 'bingo' players - and this is suppose to be serious current affairs.
The most laughable aspect of both shows are the MIKE MOORE reporters - they do their 'pieces to camera' in such a typical dead-pan current affairs style, pretending to be serious - but it just comes across as fake and laughable - the most offensive of the stock is Bryan Seymour -he was the reporter on TODAY TONIGHT who ran the story about Mercedes Corby (that sister of Schappelles) claiming she was a drug courier - nothing has come of the story but Bryan still fronts the big yarns and was even in the TODAY TONIGHT studios when the Chaser Boys snuck in - there he was ' deadpan serious face' claiming the boys were trespassing when only 2 days earlier TODAY TONIGHT had followed a dodgy car dealer into his office and pushed the door open - but that's not trespassing!
TODAY TONIGHT and A CURRENT AFFAIR should take a long break!

@ Cat, Grant Bowler was a cast member of Blue Heelers and more recently, Outrageous Fortune (the NZ soap) and host of The Mole as well as v/o for Border Security IIRC.
I've looked up Lostpedia - apparently Bowler is playing the freighter captain! coolness.

I am responding to different posts up to two weeks behind because I have had little time over the past couple of weeks but anyway:
- I am enjoying Out of the Question with its light laughs though it isnt nearly as good as Family Guy but it will be back later this year with its second season most likely in a different timeslot.
- Actually, the Burkes Backyard experiment did work only on Sundays though.
- Bereft Skerrick was almost right:
Nine Adelaide & Perth are owned by WIN, but WIN doesnt use the nine dots in any of its branding in either of its Nine or WIN stations. WIN bought Nine Adelaide from Southern Cross, while Nine Perth was bought from Sunraysia.
- em, Scrubs was on in primetime in its first season when Seven first showed it in 2004/05 (i think)? Perhaps if more people watched it back then, then it would still be on in primetime (BTW, I personally regard primetime as being between 5.30pm & 10.30pm). Seven didnt stuff around with Scrubs it was on every week in the same timeslot of 11.30 Mondays. BTW, Scrubs will still end up on Seven next year.
- (Beckala) Re: Disney & Scrubs relationship: Scrubs is on NBC but just happens to be made & distributed by abc studios & Buena Vista which are both Disney properties. There is no real relationship between NBC & Disney.
- Desperate Housewives is much better this year.
- Shoopie, it is also wise to remember that the figures for The Footy Show include the NRL version for Sydney & Brisbane plus the AFL version for the southern states.
Here are some of my Bogie nominations:
Best Botox: Anne Sanders.
Most Embarrasing program: A Current Affair.
Most Underrated program: Out of Practice.
Furthest past their use-by date: Bert Newton.
The Black Bogie: Corey Worthington.
Does anyone know when TEN News & Neighbours are going to start being in High Definition?

  • by cpandilo on March 20, 2008 at 04:14 PM

Re Blackpool - I saw it when it was first shown on Auntie ... must have been a couple of years ago as it was before DT morphed into Dr Who. It was actually really good once you got into it!
GJ, I only have one thing to say re the TT and ACA sandpit squabble - where are the Chaser boys when you need them?
Happy Chocolate eating everyone.

  • by Shoopie on March 20, 2008 at 05:17 PM

TM
Just wondering the rating figure for Sunrise and the Today show. Seem that morning telvision is hotting up more than ever after the ACA Stunt

Tribal Mind replies: Sunrise still well ahead. Nothing much has changed in recent weeks. I'll do an overview next week.

  • by Mekellan on March 20, 2008 at 06:09 PM

Nice to see you drop in cpandilo.
I thought a lot of the changes to Neighbours over the last few years was so they could now show in HD, basically because their existing sets looked like crap with the new technology.
Anyhow, Happy Easter to all, I'm off to the Blue Mountains.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on March 20, 2008 at 08:22 PM

Not much to say about the Easter closedown from FTA - except what about those of us who do not go away for the weekend - not much on offer...
Very little has capture my interest this week caught up on some things I recorded on HD from Shirl - annoyed AFL is on Shirl HD tonight rather than Eureka really liking it and although shirl has generally treated VMars with disdain they have on shirl HD at least consistently shown eps only 3 more left.
Will catch up on Jeckyll and LOM over the long weekend - may need to mindlessly watch the box tomorrow pm as I am braving the Easter Show on Good Friday of all days (sans kinder - nieces & nephews too small to take and still have attention spans of goldfish!)
Still speechless at the thought of a second series of Out of the Question - and also an extended season for Good News Week - really found it same same - not different think GNW has past use by date...
TM as Gilmore Girls fan did you notice Nein has snuck it back on weekends - still heaps behind especially as final season about to be released on DVD here
Ooops forgot - happy easter to all - hope the Lindt bunny comes a greeting to your house this weekend - has to be quality chocolate of course for us discerning TMers

For haters of Nine's crap late night show The Mint, it's getting axed and will finish up at the end of this month. It's interesting to note even Nine and WIN TV execs openly admit they think it was garbage. With daylight savings, it probably wasn't helped by the fact that it was only open to NSW, ACT, Victorian and Tassie residents from the end of October to early April.

The Mint mothballed.
March 20, 2008.
FALLING revenues and the decision by the Nine Network's WIN Television affiliate to stop screening late-night quiz show The Mint have caused the show to be axed. The Mint and it's precursor, Quizmania (which launched in mid-2006) initially generated millions of dollars in revenue for Nine. At it's peak, thousands of callers would dial in each night for a chance to win a cash prize, a source close to Nine said. The executive said The Mint was 'shit TV' and losing the revenue stream from regional callers was probably the nail in it's coffin. WIN boss Bruce Gordon has long held the view that even screening late-night infomercials showed a lack of respect for the viewer. 'You're preying on the weak and vulnerable ; probably the same people that play poker machines'. Nine spokeswoman Arabella Gibson said The Mint would finish up at the end of the month. 'This style of show has a natural life cycle. It's been a great training ground for new talent and our concentration is now focused on new programming initiatives', she said. The Mint is the last of the late-night quiz shows with which each of the commercial networks flirted, beginning with Big Brother Up Late on Ten and including Seven's Midnight Zoo.

While I type this I am watching, well mainly listening to the Elvis special on ABC. As well as thinking, gee he really was a talented guy & how sad his end... I was also thinking how nice it is to watch a special like this without any fanfare or "expert" commentary. It seems so rare nowadays, with many other such shows getting the "20 to 1" treatment. I no longer watch the current affairs programs because they just seem to focus on just that! Who is having a current affair with whom & why... very tacky.
Re Ch7 & Olympic: My favourite WTF is the ad with Bruce McAvaney (sic?) saying, "Beijing Olympics... with the best coverage since the ... Sydney Olympics! " Hmmm...yep ... wtf... excuse the vernacular but it is all acronymed

  • by Kate on March 20, 2008 at 11:21 PM

TM,
May I ask how the NRL Footy Show went last night?
Thanks in advance.

Tribal Mind replies: 302,000 in Sydney, 138,000 in Brisbane.

  • by Ryan on March 21, 2008 at 04:48 PM

TM,
Do you have any figures for Catalyst and Soul Deep on the ABC last night?
Were by far the best offerings for the evening.
Thank you.

Tribal Mind replies: Catalyst 679,000; Soul Deep 382,000

  • by Samuel on March 21, 2008 at 04:51 PM

TM,
Do you have any figures for Neighbours on Thursday and Friday?
Thanks, Happy Easter.

Tribal Mind replies: 636,000 on Friday. On Thursday it was only shown in Sydney and Brisbane, presumably because of some sort of football, so figures are not comparable.

  • by Steve on March 22, 2008 at 10:32 AM

TM,
How did Collectors go last night?
Thanks.

Tribal Mind replies: 779,000. What does that signify?

  • by Ryan on March 22, 2008 at 10:35 AM

Thanks TM.
It signifies that it's got a pretty solid fanbase, even up against the NRL in Sydney and Brisbane.

  • by Ryan on March 22, 2008 at 11:06 AM

TM, how did the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal rate in Melbourne last night? Thanks?
(This year's appeal smashed last year's record by raising $12.4 million).

Tribal Mind replies: Here's an excerpt from the Melbourne ratings chart: 24 2008 ROYAL CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL GOOD FRIDAY APPEAL-NIGHT Seven 174,000
25 2008 ROYAL CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL GOOD FRIDAY APPEAL-ARVO Seven 171,000

  • by Johnson on March 22, 2008 at 11:54 AM

TM, The Footy was not live in Brisbane last night. It started at 7:30pm Queensland time.

Tribal Mind replies: Thanks. What is the significance of that information? Was it a good thing or a bad thing? What does it tell us about Brisbane/ football/ the networks/ Australia?

  • by FJ on March 22, 2008 at 01:45 PM

Hello there Mr. Dale,
long time lurker, first time poster.
I was wondering whether you knew how Four Corners and Media Watch rated on Monday night? It will be interesting to see if a lack of competiton on the commercial stations improved their figures. Cheers.

Tribal Mind replies: Four Corners 740,000; Media Watch 654,000

  • by Bob on March 22, 2008 at 04:15 PM

TM, Have you got any figures for Mythbusters on Monday or Stateline last night? Thank goodness for the ABC and SBS during non-ratings.

Tribal Mind replies: The figure for Mythbusters has been in the chart above since Tuesday. Just scroll up from this comment. I can't find Stateline in the top 500 for the week. Are you sure it was on?

  • by Elizabeth on March 22, 2008 at 04:19 PM

Thanks Jason I did wonder where I knew the name when Grant Bowler appeared in the opening credits in Lost. He is in the next episode as well so he got at least a reasonable gig out of it. Of course Alan Dale is popping in and out as well so between them and Claire, the Poms (Desmond, Sayeed and Penny) and the Koreans Jin and Sun Lost has a rather more international cast than the average American show.

  • by Cat on March 22, 2008 at 08:02 PM

Oh and as much as I hate the producers of Lost they did create one of the all time creepy evil guys in TV in Benjamin Linus. Just when you think he could not get any creepier he does. Blahhh!

  • by Cat on March 22, 2008 at 10:17 PM

I suppose some guidelines are required to be explained to new blog contributors, TM, so you don't always come across as a grumpy old bastard.
Firstly, bloggers, when asking for ratings figures, give us a reason why you may be interested to know. That way, we can understand the issue you might be interested to get answers to. [And Tribal Mind adds: we may also learn something about social diversity in Australia]
Secondly, please be aware that OzTam is the source of all ratings figures used by this page, as well as being used by the networks. Things like Stateline, or especially sports/football coverage have different timeslots in each city, so the figures may not represent the real viewing audience.
Keep up the excellent work, TM or David or Who We Are or whatever.
happy easter all!!

  • by cronker on March 23, 2008 at 01:24 PM

Dr Who fans bored with Easter viewing (plenty of you here) check out the new season preview. Looks cool. Donna, Martha and Rose but no Capt Jack. Starts April 5 in U.K. Anybody know when we will get it?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/

  • by Cat on March 23, 2008 at 06:17 PM

TM, you're right about Stateline not being on - there was a Compass special instead. May I ask if the Easter long-weekend interest extended to last night's Compass edition?
Also, how did Gardening Australia go on Saturday? I would have thought there are only so many stories you can do on gardening, yet this show is still on the air after so many years.
Thanks.

Tribal Mind replies: C 378,000; GA 651,000.

  • by Elizabeth on March 24, 2008 at 08:56 AM

Hey TM, don't you usual start a new column for a new week?
A pretty low rating night last night, but what did you expect, it's Easter Sunday afterall.
A pretty even night last night, with all stations getting decently low figures across the board, which I'd say would be reflected in the nightly shares.

Tribal Mind replies: Usually I do, but in the silly season we offer a reduced service, like the networks.

  • by bugzy on March 24, 2008 at 09:58 AM

Reduced service! What an understatement TM! I know we are in the ratings doldrums but last night's effort by Channel Zero Point 10 beggars belief. Whatever was airing between 7.30 and 9 pm it certainly wasn't So You Think You Can DANCE and it certainly wasn't entertaining. Talk about Judge Drivel and 1001 Ways with Rehashings of Rehashings.
I gave up after seeing Demi's story yet again and just kept flicking over waiting for the dancing to begin in vain. I give up, sorry can't keep going ..... service reduced

  • by Shoopie on March 24, 2008 at 11:52 AM

Hi there - I notice the ratings refer to "the footy show" but I believe there are actually two versions - one for AFL and one for NRL. I would be interested to see how the NRL version went in its second week. The season return was terrible to say the least - I wonder how many people bothered tuning in for the follow-up.

Tribal Mind replies: I give the figures for each state capital, so the NRL show would be Sydney and Brisbane.

  • by Ray on March 24, 2008 at 01:17 PM

TM,
I wonder if you should have a regular award known as 'the yasmines' or more appropriate 'the turkeys' as the networks just seem to be reinventing the wheel with rubbish that we don't want - I think channel 7 deserved a 'yasmine' or a 'turkey' for Bingo night - they swept that under the carpet very quickly - but now that are trying to bring back the 'gladiators' - surely it's not going to last more than about 8 weeks and will be history - and 9 will bring yet another game show to add to it's list of grim pickings .... I dont even know the name of it but i know it's likely to last less than a season .... I tried to watch snippets of the biggest loser but i couldn't because it really appeared that it was almost nothing to do with weight loss and more about secrets, so called scandals and bullshit .... perhaps this deserves 'a turkey' ......

Tribal Mind replies:Lets get the Bogies out of the way before we start with Turkeys and Yasmins. It won't be too late to nominate The Gladis for a Bogie if it deserves one.

  • by Randwick Geoff on March 24, 2008 at 04:15 PM

Back from the Blue Mountains. Zig Zag Railway excellent, Scenic World @ Katoomba a rip-off. Their $80 all day family ticket isn't available at Easter - because it's their highest traffic time they make it unavailable so they can make more $$'s if you want more rides. Shame shame shame.
Anyhow had roughly 4 days free of the Idiot Box. Glad to see I didn't miss anything.
Cat: Thanks for the update on the UK start of Doctor Who. Master Almost 7 (who has a newly discovered love of Caravan Park Cricket) will be thrilled!

Ben Linus is possibly the most interesting evil guy since Cigarette Smoking Man! IMO

  • by Jason Oliver on March 25, 2008 at 11:32 AM

Apparently BIG BROTHER is just 4 weeks away so expect a whole lot more of the hideous KYLE and JACKIE O on our screens - we've virtually got NASTY KYLE on TV till the end of year cos IDOL will run straight after BIG BROTHER - surely after 9 continous months of this overinflated nong viewers and TV execs will say enough is enough and return him to community radio - where he and Jackie belong!

Still enjoying SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES and dare I say CASHMERE MAFIA - for its sheer fluff value - has it really been axed in america??

Looking forward to seeing WAYNE CAREY under the spotlight with ANDREW DENTON next week - the ABC could pull a million plus for that interview! - lets hope Denton pulls no punches - (unlike Carey!)

  • by GJ on March 26, 2008 at 10:36 AM

Although most Veronica Mars fans would've downloaded the series months ago, for those seeing it on 10HD, there's 2 more final season 3 episodes left.

Well, good to see I wasn't the only TMer crazy enough to tackle the Royal Easter Show on Good Friday! We survived to tell the tale, although the hip pocket nerve took quite a battering.

Ignoring the idiot box, catching up with previous recorded stuff. Except for that fab art show on ABC1 Tuesday evenings, 8:30pm. Art explained by neuroscientists! Wheeee! I'm loving it.

Am I the only art-fancying neuroscience nerd in Australia, or are others watching this too? Mr Dale, any comments on the ratings?

  • by tqd on March 26, 2008 at 01:32 PM

There is absolutely nothing on TV! Hurry up ratings season again as I am bored.

Been catching up on stuff recorded and some movies but waiting to see more Lost.
I agree with others here. Benjamin Linus one of the most evil characters on TV. But I still think Ciggie Smoking Man on X Files tops my list.

But big points have to go to Sylar on Heroes. What a murderous, cold blooded killer he was.

Hey , TM, maybe you should take a poll on that! Who is TV's greatest villan?

  • by em on March 26, 2008 at 01:54 PM

The Mint is finishing this Saturday.

  • by cpandilo on March 26, 2008 at 02:33 PM

Been quiet on this blog as have not watched much TV, in my case, it is because of what is on offer rather than not being home. I would like to say that programs such as "Spendaholics" and " I Survived Impaling" are such dross that they would only be offered in non-ratings but sadly no, if any viewers watch them at all, networks will then offer them in "normal service" timeslots as well... Easter was a good time to catch up on some backlogged d/ls... Funniest TV highlight.. didn't watch the show but some one sent me a snippet from Today Tonight over the ACA story about Bingo... Samantha managed to keep a straight face while saying that the ACA journo is at Seven so often, he may want a job there, but "sorry, no we only employ people who will give the facts" Speakth the program who chained an old lady to her bed... Both TT & ACA are the dregs equally

  • by Kate on March 26, 2008 at 03:30 PM

The E Ring series (that lasted one season and has screened on Foxtel I believe) has started on 9HD at 10.30.pm Tuesdays.

  • by Sab on March 26, 2008 at 05:55 PM

Yes, it seems likely that Cashmere Mafia will be given cement Jimmy Choo shoes & will be swimming with da fishes... probably not a bad thing as Miranda's overacting was dreadful! I lost interest in the show after the first 3 eps (downloaded without ads, though it still didn't enhance the show) The characters were too homogenus and plots too thin & cliche... and the huge cheap 80's earrings while dining on 5th Ave! Shudders..
Prison Break oddly has been renewed for season 4 ? Michael wants to bring down the company...

  • by Kate on March 27, 2008 at 12:00 AM

Am in total agreement with Kate re: Miranda Otto in Cashmere Mafia. She is just appalling! And she's usually a really good actress, so I'm guessing it's bad direction? And Lucy Liu's wardrobe leaves a lot to be desired... Last night with the orange poncho that was rejected in the film the Devil Wears Prada was a new low! That said, I like it for the sheer trashiness of it. So, I guess we'll have to wait for Lipstick Jungle!

  • by Beckala on March 27, 2008 at 07:01 AM

em wrote: agree with others here. Benjamin Linus one of the most evil characters on TV. But I still think Ciggie Smoking Man on X Files tops my list.

I agree that Sylar is a cold blooded killer but he did all his killing himself and as we have seen (and will shortly see again) Ben is superb at getting others to kill for him instead. (Sorry Jason but I never watched X-Files so I will accept your advice on that one).

Bereft is Master Almost 7 likely to be scared of Dr Who's Mr Potato-Head of villians because the Sontarans make a return in the new series. They were one of my favourite villians when I was a kid so I am glad to see them back but as an adult I wonder if they will look less Mr Potato Head with CGI.

  • by Cat on March 27, 2008 at 08:04 AM

I'm waiting to see Lipstick Jungle as well. Apparently THE Andrew McCarthy (yes, you know the one we drooled over in Pretty In Pink) is guest starring in it. Sigh.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on March 27, 2008 at 10:27 AM

Yes I must admit to thinking that Otto goes way over the top in Cashmere as well - its kinda irritating to watch and does detract from the character - I guess who really cares given the shows demise but I still liked the show for some reason - maybe it was the New York backdrop - who knows.

Really peeved at Seven last night for advertising A TOUCH OF FROST and dumping it at the last minute for an umpteenth repeat of THE ROCK - cmon Channel Seven - your begining to resemble NEIN with your shennanigans lately.

Quite mystified at all the bad press the judges on that terrible show IT TAKES TWO are getting - apparently James Valentine is copping it for being too strict and critical with some of the contestants, in partcular that Paul guy from HOME AND AWAY - I thought it was the role of judges to judge good, bad or otherwise - and the judges on this show would have to be the tamest lot on TV at moment -I think because its celebs judging celebs, egos are on the line - from where I sit, the guy from HOME AND AWAY can't sing and hasn't improved so he should be judged accordingly! I know by adding to this debate I am giving extra attention to a show that really doesn't deserve it! - its like Karaoke but with so called stars -AND it's what we are prepared to watch these days!

  • by GJ on March 27, 2008 at 10:53 AM

Seven left "Frost" on HD and put the "The Rock" on SD. That's what Seven's online guide said yesterday.

  • by david@replaycharlestown on March 27, 2008 at 12:58 PM

Cat: Master Almost 7 has an Ood on his bedroom shelf so I think that the Sontarans won't be too much of a worry!

GJ: Perhaps Prime knew what was going on. The Rock wasn't a last minute scheduling change down here.

The bloke from H&A should have gone weeks ago if it was a talent competiton. But it's a popularity quest.

Quoth em on March 26, 2008 at 01:54 PM: "Hey , TM, maybe you should take a poll on that! Who is TV's greatest villan?"
Ah, memories of the Cigarette Smoking Man! But I'd have to say: Richard Wilkins, the Mayor of Sunnydale (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, seasons 2 & 3 I think it was). Not only was he nasty, controlling, evil, had bouffant hair, could charm grannies, and turned into a giant monster, BUT he also has a name that made me giggle so many times.

  • by tqd on March 27, 2008 at 01:51 PM

The Gossip Girl series that's got a 2nd season and which Nine onsold to Fox 8, is apparently going to back to Nine (but I'm sure Foxtel will screen season 2 before Nine does). As with remaining episodes of Nip Tuck and the acclaimed Mad Men cable series Nine have bought, my guess is they probably intend screening GG on 9HD at a
9.30 pm or 10.30 pm timeslot (and probably before the cancelled 1 season girly show
'Related' that 9HD started showing this week at 11 pm Wednesday).

  • by Karen on March 27, 2008 at 10:13 PM

Thanks to the long overdue demise of The Mint, for admirers of The Wire series that recently finished it's 5th and final season (that'll hopefully be shown as
soon as season 4 ends), Nine have slotted season 4 for
12 am Tuesday night – Wednesday morning. It's a crap graveyard timeslot, but previous seasons got the same and the show isn't for everyone. Anyone interested can tape it.

"Does anyone have any clues as to when/if 7 will resume screening LOST this year?

That makes sense because there are two episodes not seen here yet and the U.S. is starting post writer's strike episodes on the 24th of April so if Ch 7 started then they could run through uninterrupted.

  • by Cat on March 28, 2008 at 07:53 AM

"No, em, Nein don't have anything better to show....perhaps they could follow 7's lead and show ancient BBC shows that have already been shown on ABC countless times over the years. Viewers won't notice and if they do, who cares."

"Methinks that Sarah Connor will be terminated by the time the ratings period resumes."
by Sacs on March 19, 2008 at 01:27 PM
Nein have decided to combine these ideas.
Sarah, while not quite terminated, is on life support after being bumped to 10.30pm. She is being replaced by Ladette to Lady, which screened on ABC2 only a few months ago.
They have got to be kidding. Then again, this from a network that thought Monster House was a good idea.

  • by Sacs on March 28, 2008 at 08:00 AM

Thanks to those who responded re SEVEN moving A TOUCH OF FROST - SEVEN actually came on just before FROST was to screen with an apology that due to programming error it would not be screened and would return in 2 weeks - all the prgramme guides we had at home had FROST on as the Wednesday night movie.

Never mind - we switched the box off and went to movies instead!

Speaking of SEVEN just heard that THE NIGHTCAP on SEVEN HD has been axed - poor Jessica Rowe - she must be feeling a little jottled lately - they didnt give it much of a go - first they fired the gay guy from BIG BROTHER now the whole show - it was pretty awful but seemed an odd idea at the time to put a live panel show on the HD format - that no doubt around 3 people were watching!

  • by gj on March 28, 2008 at 08:57 AM

TM,
Any figures for American Dad? It's great to see Seven running this little-known show late at night on the main channel - better than not running it at all.
Thanks.

Tribal Mind replies: 401,000

by gj on March 28, 2008 at 08:57 AM

Why poor Jessica? One thing is that she certainly isn't is poor... unless she has already spent all of her settlement money. She does an adequate job of reading news, though I personally find her mouth & head a little too mobile, but once she steps outside that role, she is definitely inadequate....

In general, I don't know how much the HD format is working? Largely due to information in TV guides. If most people are like me, you get the hardcopy guide in either the Sunday paper or the Monday paper and neither of those provide HD programs. Sometimes I will look up electronic guides but not often, many HD programs are missed that way. Just a thought ...

  • by kate on March 28, 2008 at 02:16 PM

Kate I too am frustrated that the hard copy guides do nto have HD info and even the electronic ones I access do not have Nein HD which I noticed on a channel surfing fit over the Easter Weekend. Once a week I go to one of the electronic guides to check out what is on HD in prime time (or at least up to 1.30 am) for the next week. This is the way I found the little gem Eureka (thursdays 10.30pm on 10HD)-and of course the wonderful Veronica Mars. Tried but gave up on Friday Night Lights as too much football. Saw Nein HD has 4 Kings with Seth Green who to me will always be Oz from Buffy - did not see the show as was ending on my surf through. Did not watch the Night Cap on 7HD but did watch a run of the Amazing Race they were showing on weekends a few weeks ago

  • by Cathy on March 29, 2008 at 12:39 AM

Nobody at Nein asked MY permission to start NeinHD. When did this happen? Mind, they probably aren't showing down here since this is WIN Territory.
