David Dale's daily media report, updated 10 am Saturday
In this column's opinion, it was a crackerjack episode of Lost on Thursday night, with flashforwards replacing the customary flashbacks. But it seems the writers left it too late to get their act together. Only 912,000 viewers in the mainland capitals were prepared to give it another try, after the gimmickry and confused plotting of last season. What did you make of it?

Lost was beaten by yet another Gordon Ramsay cooking show, which makes Wednesday's poor performance of The Chopping Block (see below) all the more worrying for Nine. Apparently the foodies want more aggression with their meals. And does anybody think Out of the Question is a careful mix of The Panel, Spicks and Specks and Thank God You're Here, with too many in-jokes about Kath and Kim?

Australians would rather dance than eat, it seems. Or at least, watch dancing in preference to cooking.

Ten's talent quest we must abbreviate to SYTYCDA is holding its audience comfortably, while Nine's reworking of My Restaurant Rules could manage only 718,000 in the mainland capitals -- nearly 300,000 fewer than the fan base of Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. Clearly Catriona Rowntree and Matt Moran will need to add more expletives to their dialogue.

Nine can't afford a single misstep this year. How long before The Chopping Block becomes a prophetic name?

Some readers have been speculating that the US writers' strike is over, and thus we may after all get complete seasons of Grey's, House and the Despos. Bit premature, apparently. The excellent Entertainment Weekly reports: "While rumors continued to swirl in Hollywood that both the Writers Guild of America leadership and the conglomerates had hammered out a tentative deal, WGA Negotiating Committee Chairman John F. Bowman sent an email to members late Monday that was obtained by EW.com. 'While we have made important progress since the companies re-engaged us in serious talks, negotiations continue,' he said. 'Regardless of what you may hear or read, there are many significant points that have yet to be worked out'."

The viewing audience split by age on Monday night. The under 40s stuck with So You Think You Can Dance, while the geriatrics peeled off to bend the knee to the Royal Family on Nine. The biggest loser was SBS, where Top Gear dropped from last week's 1 million to just under 800,000. It seems some revheads are closet monarchists -- or devotees of the turpsichorean arts.

Channel Ten has a new franchise and Natalie Bassingthwaighte has a new career. Just when you thought talent quests were on the fade, Ten takes a risk on a younger, hipper version of Dancing With The Stars, with a younger, hipper host than Daryl Somers, and is rewarded with 1.8 million viewers -- an astonishing figure in the silly season for anything that is not cricket or tennis.

Ten said SYTYCD peaked at 2.1 million and was its highest rated summer premiere since people meters were introduced in 2001. What will be chuffing Ten is that the show didn't just grab junior viewers. The launch was also number one with people aged 25 to 54. Meanwhile, with the over 55s, Miss Marple was number one.

And Channel Seven will be pleased that, up against such tough competition, its new sitcom, Samantha Who? managed 1.3 million. Sunday is back to being a big viewing night -- look at how many shows got more than a million in the mainland capitals.

glenn.jpg It seems the redoubtable Glenn Robbins, of Kath and Kim and All Aussie Adventures fame and one of Australia's coolest people, can do no wrong. Hosting Out of the Question, a modest new game show which Seven cautiously tested in the silly season, he managed to pull nearly 1.2 million viewers to a night that usually manifests miniscule audiences.

Indeed, looking at the number of shows with more than a million viewers on Thursday (see chart below), you'd have to conclude that the viewers are back from holidays and eager to be entertained. What a pity the official ratings season is still seven days away.

On Friday, Nine regained control of the nation's sets, attracting 2 million to the cricket. And on Saturday, the ABC took over, offering a repeat of Doc Martin to the kind of viewers who don't go out at night.

SBS averaged a healthy 6.8 per cent of the prime time audience (thanks mainly to a million viewers for Top Gear), while ABC got an unimpressive 15.2 per cent, Ten got 21.0, Nine got its standard 26.5 and Seven managed 30.6.

Strangely, Australians seem to prefer men in long pants to women in short skirts, and men in short pants to men in long pants. They followed the tennis closely on television every night last week (with 1.6 million in the mainland capitals seeing the demise of Roger Federer), but only 690,000 tuned in for the Australian Open Women's Final on Saturday afternoon, while 851,000 opted for the cricket's Fourth Test.

Later in the day, 864,000 joined Channel Ten in farewelling Heath Ledger via his action comedy A Knight's Tale.

Then on Sunday, 2.3 million watched the tennis men's final, setting an audience standard it will be hard to beat in the next 11 months. (For more on such viewing records, go to The TV shows Australia loved)

The best non-sports programming achievement of the week was Channel Nine's, with more than a million viewers on Monday for Cold Case, Nurses and Police Ten 7. But the tennis won the week for Seven, which averaged 33 per cent of the prime time audience, with Nine on 23.5, Ten 21.3, ABC 15.5, and SBS on a healthy 6.7.

There's good news for lovers of US movies and TV shows: The Writers Guild of America is having some success in breaking the unity of the producers of America. The writers are on strike for a better share of profits made when the producers onsell their work via DVDs and online. Small companies have started signing interim profit-share agreements with writers that will let them go back into production.

The producers who have caved so far are Lionsgate, Marvel Studios, United Artists, The Weinstein Company, Media Rights Capital, and David Letterman's Worldwide Pants. Lionsgate's projects include Rambo, Saw 5 and the pay TV series Mad Men, while Marvel is making a new Wolverine movie in New Zealand with High Jackman, Iron Man with Robert Downey jnr, and yet another version of The Incredible Hulk, with Edward Norton. So we'll have something to watch this year after all.

David Dale is the author of Who We Are -- A snapshot of Australia today (Allen and Unwin). His latest book is Soffritto -- A delicious Ligurian memoir. For further observations of Australian attitudes and behaviour, go to http://blogs.sunherald.com.au/whoweare/.

The Australian Open Men's Final has served its purpose once again: to restore our faith in big TV audiences, and signal the beginning of the final straight into ratings period.
Since Ten will move Friends into the 6pm weeknights slot come February, may I ask how it went this past Saturday and Sunday? Thanks TM.

Tribal Mind replies: There's been no change in the audience pattern for Friends. No miracle has suddenly occurred among Australian viewers. Honesty, I'd tell you if there had been.

  • by Ryan on January 28, 2008 at 10:11 AM

Ten have slotted the new version of Good News Week, for 9 pm Monday Feb. 11. If the show doesn't deliver (and I don't think it will) the high ratings Ten would be expecting of it at that timeslot, they could move it to either a 10.30 pm timeslot,
or move it to 9 pm Mondays on 10 HD. 7 are apparently planning their own 7 HD exclusive Good News Week-ish show, as shows like these that feature a bunch of people yapping and making jokes about what's going on in the news, are of course extremely cheap to make.

For Brothers and Sisters series fans, Seven kick off the 2nd season at 10.40 pm Sunday. A fan could ignore it if they wished, as it's only a season 1 clip show, not a proper episode. I'm unsure if this time has or hasn't been slotted for when all season 2 episodes will be shown.

Seven have only 12 new B&S eps to screen, 11 new Grey's Anatomy eps, 10 new Desperate Housewives eps, 9 Private Practice eps and 5 more Prison Break season 3 episodes
(2 of which aired in the US in the last couple weeks). Most Aus fans of all 5 shows would've either downloaded them or watched them on online viewing sites, over the summer recess.

For Lost fans, season 4 starts at 9.30 pm next Thursday (Feb. 7), a week after it's US airing. Seven only have 8 episodes to screen ; there were meant to be 8 more. Season 5 and the final 6th season are likely to probably have 20 episodes each, instead of a scheduled 16 each that they were meant to have.

Channel 10 bringing back GNW? Yawn. Have they forgotten why they boned it in the first place?
As a fan of The Office, it's particularly frustrating. Ten has half of season three up their sleeve, puts it on for a couple of episodes over Christmas at 11pm and then just takes it back off the air again.
Yet now they bring back a show they axed eight years ago. Seriously?

Talking about American show favourites and the still unresolved US writer's strike, a check on the status of other popular series shows the following :
Criminal Minds series 3 13 episodes were done, with new lead Joe Montegna.
Boston Legal series 4 - 14 episodes made, the last one airs in the US next week.
The CSI shows about 13 new episodes for Miami and New York, 12 for Las Vegas. Nine will just screen repeats after they run out.
NCIS series 5 11 episodes only.
Medium series 4 - only 8 episodes have been made.
House series 4 - about 5 or 6 eps only left to show, as Ten fast tracked it and screened 7 or 8 episodes I think. 13 were made, but Ten will probably just show repeats when new eps run out.
Supernatural Ten fast tracked series 3, so only have about 4 new episodes to screen. Only 11 episodes made. I'm sure they'll just screen repeats.
Ugly Betty series 2 13 episodes were done, the final one aired last week.
Law & Crder : CI only 10 new episodes.
L & O : SVU 16 eps done, with only 2 eps yet to air.
ER series 14 13 episodes made.
The Simpsons series 19 almost all animated shows have their episodes prepared, written and made a couple years in advance, so they have a normal full season of episodes.

Is the person controlling Channel Ten after 11pm drunk?
Seriously...half of Letterman gets cut out regularly and we see lots of black screen, fuzz and miscued ads.

  • by Kevin on January 28, 2008 at 11:50 PM

Does anyone know if 7 ever plan to just show us the rest of Season 2 of Bones?? They seem to just give us 2 or 3 episodes at a time...thought it might be back on this week now that the Tennis is finished but no such luck.

  • by Bee on January 29, 2008 at 08:06 AM

Super excellent Top Gear last night, I'm pretty sure that there were less ads, but I think that was really only because of the nature of the episode. I'm sure part was cut out before the Road Kill Challenge.
Just watched Ep 2 of TW Season 2 last night as well.

On that Bereft do you ever tell Mr Skerrick you love him the way Beth does? It was a better episode than the first so fed my optimism. My favourite part of Top Gear was the look on the Hamster's face when Jeremy drove up with the cow on his car roof. (That and May's role - "to dress for dinner").

TM was the High Jackman a comment or a typo? I ask in all seriousness because I have found around here it is best not to assume.

  • by Cat on January 29, 2008 at 09:41 AM

The best line of all in Top Gear -and there were many - Jeremy's assertion that 'some Americans mate with vegetables'.
I thought it was the funniest show I'd ever seen.

  • by Rupert on January 29, 2008 at 10:58 AM

Had to laugh last night with Channel 9. Up pops a station ID about 8pm proclaiming the station is "Proudly Australian".
Of course, the ID was sandwiched between a New Zealand made surf patrol episode and the Manchester (U.K.) Fire Brigade's reality show.
Both of which were followed by a 4 year old repeat of the American made CSI. "Proudly Australian"?

  • by David on January 29, 2008 at 11:52 AM

Excellent ep of Top Gear last night. Loved the dead cow on the roof. Classic!
Thanks everyone for giving us all a heads up on when our fav programs are back on. Will be interesting to see how many repeats we will be subjected to this year. Will Ten take the few eps of House it has, add repeats, and try and make us all believe it is all new eps? Probably. As will all the networks.
Anyone else see the preview ep of Pushing Daisies on DVD that came with the Hearld on Sunday? I loved it! It was just the sort of strange offbeat program I like.
That means, of course, that it is bound to fail or bound for a late night time slot. That seems to be the fate of every show I really like. Sometimes I think me liking a show is the death knell for that show.
Mmmm. Maybe I should start watching BB this year?

  • by em on January 29, 2008 at 11:53 AM

Cat, the closest to that involved a minor medical procedure on my foot and fingernail indents that I believe are still on his shoulder 12 years later.
I had seen TG ealier via Youtube clips, but seeing the whole thing together - hunting for a cheap car south of 79th Street, where the car dealers have rifle with long range sights, and the epilogue in New Orleans, where the people are desperate, but not desperate enough to want Captain Slow's Cadillac.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on January 29, 2008 at 12:02 PM

Hi TM, Thanks for the heads up on the new blog address.
Just want to know , have SMH provided a link on their website as well as I can only find the old TM.
Must admit it all looks really cool !

Tribal Mind replies: Congrats on being the first to post on the new blog. Fairfax said they would provide a link from the old site but the wheels of bureacracy grind slow.

  • by em on January 31, 2008 at 07:53 AM

Nine's 13 part Underbelly
series (based on the book Leadbelly) has been slotted for Wednesday Feb. 13. It would be better suited to a 9. 30 pm timeslot, rather than go up against the final 5 or 6 new House season 4 eps that Ten will screen on Wednesdays.

  • by Simone on January 31, 2008 at 09:38 AM

nice new blog, TM. looks right purty.

Tribal Mind replies: Glad you found it. Now we can all get back into dialogue about TV, movies, life, the universe and everything.

  • by cronker on January 31, 2008 at 11:06 AM

In response to Simone at 9:38am's comment about Underbelly, you're absolutely right. It will struggle against House. They really should just wait the four weeks of new House eps out and premiere it then. Pushing it to 9:30, however, would almost be a waste since audiences dwindle as the night drags on.

  • by Samuel on January 31, 2008 at 12:14 PM

Agree with Cronk - "right purty" sir.
My comment back at the historical site this morning was that when I saw the ACA ad for its piece on Wayne Carey my immediate thought was "animals who eat their young". Ch Nein (and the rest!) would turn on any of their own if they thought it would help their ratings.
Does anybody know whether 30 Rock is going into the Celebrity Overload channel's blackhole along with Bones?
Oh and I just saw latest Torchwood and it makes such a difference when they use one of the better Dr Who writers (in this case Raynor).

Tribal Mind remarks: No good sending comments to the old address, because they won't show up anywhere. Glad you've joined us.

  • by Cat on January 31, 2008 at 12:57 PM

Hi TM... kept checking old location & was worried about your health as it had not been updated... imagined you on the operating table, eeek!
My post to the old blog location has gone *pfft* Essentially it was about Channel 9 sinking further in TV stakes... It became public knowledge that Ch9 ranks 3rd in advertising share & revenue (last really as SBS & ABC don't count in advertising stakes, do they?) Oh dear, how the mighty have fallen & it is only going to get worse for Ch9... the new shows they've acquired have bombed in the US... Only hope for improvement are sports related...

  • by Kate on January 31, 2008 at 01:24 PM

Someone mentioned
Brothers & Sisters, that 7 only have 12 new season 2 eps to show. Season 2 has been slotted for Sunday week Feb. 10 for 9.30 pm, where it will do well for 3 months.

Tribal MInd asks: Same problem for the Despos -- only 12 episodes. Anyone heard when that's starting?

  • by Tony on January 31, 2008 at 04:09 PM

Despos starts Monday 11 Feb.
At this stage, the US networks have 3 weeks to sort out the writers strike. If they can, there is every chance that the rest of most TV shows can complete their seasons. It's been mentioned that Heroes will not complete their season regardless of the outcome of the strike.
Click here for a link to Ch 7 and Ch10 schedules thanks to Aaron at TvAus.

That was before "The Enlightenment" TM - unfortunately I am not "pisschic" as Betty from Hey Dad would say.
Thanks for that link cronker - very happy to see Lost in only a week late - save me time downloading. Also happy to see back Brothers and Sisters, House, 30 Rock and Numbers (I know sad but between having a mathematician in the family and fond memories of Northern Exposure I cannot resist).
Does anybody have a review of Lewis? I had never heard of it until I saw that Kevin Whatley went to Billie Piper's wedding because she co-starred in Lewis.

  • by Cat on January 31, 2008 at 04:52 PM

TM POsted: Same problem for the Despos -- only 12 episodes. Anyone heard when that's starting?
Monday 11th February at 8:30pm. I was beginning to wonder if they would wait to screen it due to writer's strike, but I guess they are optimistic that the strike will be over by the time they need more. But I don't think they'll be that lucky - the unions are really refusing to budge.
So glad you are back TM - I was beginning to think my TM blogging days were over, I was coping with being back at work, and no TM or ratings numbers to ponder!! It's been torture!

Tribal Mind remarks: I think it's the producers who are "really refusing to budge". I don't see what's so hard about an increased share of future profits.

Agree, especially as the costs for online sales are minimal as opposed to DVD in which the retailer gets a large cut... Think the producers & large networks are losing ground as the independent companies increasingly make their own deals with the writers... Happy, happy that the writers of Weeds have made a deal...

  • by Kate on January 31, 2008 at 06:30 PM

TM Wrote: I think it's the producers who are "really refusing to budge". I don't see what's so hard about an increased share of future profits.

Oh, I just realised how that looked - I meant that they won't give in to the pressure of the various producers and public displeasure and just give in and go back to work - and nor should they! I agree, it's ridiculous how little they are asking for - soemthing like a penny from every dollar earnt for works screened online - surely the producers have more than enough! I just meant that the union movement is much stronger over in the US - as well as having so many other unions going out in support, so the picket line won't be broken any time soon - they won't give up - but i see that as a positive. Trust me, i'm on the side of the writers and the unions - most of Mr B's family are staunch unionists and work or have worked in the union industry!

  • by Beckala on January 31, 2008 at 07:20 PM

Hey Beckala, I have to agree. The writers have every reason to stick to their guns. The studios and producers will see reason eventually as they run out of shows and start feeling the financial squeeze very soon!
Still us little people have to suffer by not having our fav programs to watch. And probably have to suffer more of the indignity of "reality" TV more than usual.
Hey, TM, it's good people are finding their way to the new site but I have to say that no link from SMH so far is a pain in the neck. Hope it gets fixed soon. And so glad you didnt disappear as what would all us TV junkies (and those stuck at work like me ) do without you?

  • by em on February 01, 2008 at 08:43 AM

I am with the writers purely and simply because I hate reality TV with a passion and decent scripted TV is hard enough to find without sidelining the writers over a few cents in the dollars. Hopefully more and more producers will break from the pack (so far they seem to be temporary deals) and get it sorted. Anything to keep the lid on reality TV which I have such an unnatural hatred of. :)
Speaking of the strike and the channels plugging the gaps in their schedules does anyone know of any decent Canadian shows?

  • by Cat on February 01, 2008 at 08:57 AM

Thanks TM for the new address I too like Kate was imagining the worst... especially as there was no link on the SMH site - have now readjusted my favourites...
What did anyone think of Glen Robbins "Out of the Question" last night - my view- hurrumph and more than likely nah!! Seemed very disjointed and not that interesting - may give it one more before I consign it to the forget about it pile.
Also note that new series Life on Mars appears to be on ABC (aka ABC1) next thursday - plus Spicks and Specks back - whoo hoo...
And just because I think they deserve it - shame shame shame Nein - looks like you have ended ER at cliffhanger point - as I note it is not in next week's schedule... and on the "we heart Tv idiot network) what is it with the extended promo watermarks whilst a show in on - noted terminator watermark on during shows the other night - not ten seconds more like ten minutes... Stop it, stop it now.

Tribal Mind replies: Thanks for your kind words but I, in turn, am worried about Bereft Skerrick. We haven't heard from her for days. Hopefully she is not still sending to the old address.

  • by Cathy on February 01, 2008 at 09:55 AM

Top 15 movies - OMG I have seen 9 already - new recommendations - Juno - brilliant brilliant brilliant - methinks I like it. Kite Runner also excellent, so too American Gangster. My Mum saw No Country for Old Men and thought it was fantastic - bit violent to start but then wonderful - she said a movie you need to see twice - it is on my list of to see movies. A big list - my movie buddies figure we will need to see 2 a week to get through all the ones we know are coming that interest us - damn that I have that work thing to interfere with my social life

  • by Cathy on February 01, 2008 at 03:06 PM

Cathy, answer to your question is that I did not even watch the debut episode of Out Of The Question... didn't even find the promo ads funny... instead watched a downloaded Bones with Stephen Fry as the guest star, excellent episode...
I don't watch Ch9 very often as they do not have anything that I want to watch but I must admit to a giggle or two, when I see that promo, "we heart tv"... firstly the big mistake was the choice of song, "you'd better smile" constantly repeated... These lyrics bring to mind the expression, "grin and bear it" ... the Ch9 talent who have to grin and bear presenting rubbish or the viewers who have to grin & bear Ch9's programming decisions & watermark arrogance... The second mistake is prominently plugging their bland talent like Catriona and Karl, more a promo of why not to watch... Think Ch7's Get ready is better, then again, why do any of the networks bother with the new TV year promos, concentrate on specific show promos only... Does watching an ad with the station's on air employees grouped together entice me to watch any one show.... No!
TM - Bereft is probably either posting to the old site... especially as a little post a comment box still pops up on the old site and allows you to submit a comment that looks like it has worked.... or else she is suffering from first week of school for one of her little people, one of the Masters (insert age here)...

  • by Kate on February 02, 2008 at 02:41 AM

Hallelujah! I was beginning to think that I would have to play away from home with "Ask Sam" (God forbid) or give up blogging altogether and do the ironing!
On to the real issues of the nation - TV. Drat, I forgot to watch the final of ANTM on Thursday so didn't get to see Jade NOT win - yay. Also forgot to watch Glen Robbins' latest thingie but from Cathy's POV obviously I didn't miss much.
Now that school has resumed I can venture out to the pictures - has anyone seen Cloverfield - Mr Cranky has not rated it well.

  • by Shoopie on February 02, 2008 at 11:07 AM

With the US writer's strike, the issue about online episode streaming that they're partially striking about, is exclusive to the US (where the US free to air networks let people watch new episodes of shows commercial free after they've aired on a network, but force someone to watch an advert of something before an episode starts, that a network makes money from). An overseas viewer can't watch an episode on a US network website, as they have IP address blocks on them, that recognise only North America IP numbers. It's not important anyway, as there's now plenty of online viewing sites around, that have new episodes of shows.

  • by Chris on February 02, 2008 at 01:03 PM

Massive ratings for the 20/20 Cricket on a Friday night. Looks like neighbours might be finally staging a comeback. Those ratings are some of the highest that they've had for a Friday night episode and the rest of the week has been good too. Looks like the strong storylines are finally attracting the viewers.
I'm quite intrigued by what happened with 'Entertainment Tonight' this week. They were promoting a 'drug video' of Heath Ledger as if it was a new movie that everyone should go see and then the next day they dropped it completely from the show and made no mention of it. It seems fans, critics and viewers were outraged at this and the show and it's sister program 'The Insider' copped abuse. Quite interesting that there was an Aussie connection when Robert Penfold was interviewed on the show on the first night and they credited Ch 9 with obtaining the footage but now Ch 9 have distanced themselves from having any involvement.
In recent months Entertainment Tonight has seriously gone downmarket, with more scandal and gossip rather than actual entertainment news. Much like the women's magazines have done in recent years. I suspect they're just chasing ratings these days and that means they've had to dumb it down and appeal to the lowest common levels. First it was intense coverage of Anna Nicole Smith, then Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears. Some the coverage of he death of Heath Ledger sunk them to some new lows and the way tehy promoted this drug video was absolutely disgusting. I think the audience has probably had enough of this style of tabloid journalism and that's why they've copped a backlash.

  • by J Bar on February 02, 2008 at 01:17 PM

Shoopie, unfortunately you did not miss much by missing Jade not win.... mainly as her ego is so huge that she does dismiss it as a mistake of the judges by eliminating her.... I expected a hissy fit... sadly all she did was refuse to thank the judges, refused to hug the remaining girls (like the others have done in other eps) she just looked at the judges with disdain, turned and walked out of the room....

  • by Kate on February 02, 2008 at 06:32 PM

Oops, sorry for my bad typing & linguistic skills... I meant to say that Jade JUST dismissed it as a mistake of the judges.... Oh , got the 9s... again

  • by Kate on February 02, 2008 at 09:40 PM

Enjoying your new digs, TM?
May I ask how Kid Nation and Two and a Half Men went in ratings on Friday night? Thanks.

Tribal Mind replies: Congratulations, you're the first person to ask a question at the new address. Kid Nation got 654,000; Two and a Half Men got 675,000 but wasn't shown in Brisbane.

  • by Samuel on February 03, 2008 at 09:06 AM

With all the hype (and totally repetitive advertising) I'm wondering how the new reality tv is going to go tonight on Channel 10 - particularly So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD), as they had Natalie Bassingthwaite (hope spelling is right!!) flogging it on every radio. Any predictions for ratings before they are listed? I'm hoping for 1 mil - but I'm a huge fan of the US version. Here's hoping we don't stuff it up!

  • by Beckala on February 03, 2008 at 10:18 AM

Oh, and I forgot to mention, it looks like an end to the writer's strike in the US could finally be in sight!! Reports are coming out today that they think they could be finally negotiating towards a solution. Channel 7 could be saved after all!! they seem to be the ones that are most vulnerable - Grey's, DH, Lost, Heroes... all their major programs - what were they going to do in 12 weeks?

  • by Beckala on February 03, 2008 at 10:21 AM

Well, forget 12 weeks, what will ch 9 do now?
Just looked at the TV guide for this week, circled NOT ONE program on 9.
They've dropped ER & are playing a movie for the umpteenth time. Who can figure them out?
Glad I found this blog after much anguish since Tuesday. Kept on trying with the old one but no action (or redirection) there.
Got the 999999 code today!

  • by Sal on February 03, 2008 at 12:38 PM

Sal wrote: well, forget 12 weeks, what will ch 9 do now?
Ch 9 is obviously hoping that Underbelly is going to be their saviour for 13 weeks... I am undecided, it does have a great cast but it is going to be so chock full of ads probably out-time the program itself, it will be unwatchable.... I have also read somewhere that Ch9 has severed ties with their main LA based liaison with the US networks... this does not bode well for obtaining key US shows.... So that leaves Ch9 with Underbelly, Patrol Boat S2 and game shows....

What about all those great shows from the bottom of the barrel whoops I mean across the Tasman? Perhaps Nein will keep airing them ... there must be at least a dozen of them ... I'm starting to say fesh & cheps from overexposure!
Hope SYTYCD lives up to all the hype or I will be disappointed ... again. Drat re Jade - I was hoping for a giant hissy fit with feet stomping, heels drumming on floor etc which is what I will be doing if I have to watch another double dose of The Bill. Oh god, spare me.

  • by Shoopie on February 03, 2008 at 03:57 PM

I thought the Aussie So You Think You Can... lived up to the hype. Well, as much as it can at this stage, I thought that the judges were better than I expected, no quite Nigel or Mary but miles better than any other Australian talent show judges. Matt Lee looks like a young Michael Schumacher. The only criticism is to Natalie Bassingthwaite... please cover up the "girls"... enough already...
The Biggest Loser is not as good as the American version. Think OZ version suffers from two things, firstly the "secret" surprises have already been revealed in US season before it (twins, secret team) & secondly that "walk" business is just silly.. the US season was just fine without it
Shoopie - Jade's last moments (on the show, not in life) are probably on youtube... In one way, I actually think she was right to leave how she did, why pretend to be happy for the remaining 2 girls if she wasn't. Oh forgot, she wrote a poem.. find that on youtube if you can
Finally - on the list of most repeated films has to go Billy Elliot... not complaining as I think it is a great film & I watched it again tonight :o) but it is oft repeated. Nice thematic programming Ch 10, except for BL

  • by Kate on February 03, 2008 at 11:42 PM

Geez, I feel like I went to work one morning and everyone moved house without telling me! Thanks for your concern TM! Will comment more after having my back cracked.
But before I go. Colin Firth! Wednesday! Woo Hoo!

I agree totally J Bar. I tape ET so I can see what is happening in shows in the States and movies I am interested in. I have always had to fast forward through bits on shows I do not watch or movies I am not interested in but now I might watch 3 minutes max out of it. If I see Heath, Britney, Anna-Nicole's kid onscreen my finger is laser-like on the fast-forward. The interesting thing about the pulling of the video is that it was (according to Huff Post) due to the stars. ET would be screwed if the stars stopped talking to them and some stars (Natalie Portman for one) got their agents to ring around and organise a potential boycott if it was not pulled. Apparently sometimes enough really is enough. The other interesting item in the article is that the part of the video they did not promote (for glaringly obvious reasons) had Heath after admitting to smoking pot pointing to a tattoo of M on his arm and saying that is for my daughter to remind me never to smoke dope again. Never let the truth get in the way of a ratings it seems.

  • by Cat on February 04, 2008 at 09:40 AM

Last night was the first full night of telly I have watched in months but I did not watch any of the most popular. Instead it was Cathy Freeman on Who Do You Think You Are and Miss Marple. Did not have to watch any taped stuff at all.
Cathy were you referring to Life on Mars returning this week or next (trotted off to look in the TV guide). I see the replay of series 1 finishes on Wednesday but could not see anything for Thursday. I would have expected the ABC to be advertising it if it was returning soon -ala Robin Hood.

  • by Cat on February 04, 2008 at 09:49 AM

Very surprised with the high ratings for SYTYCD. Pleasantly so. I really loved the first episode, hope it keeps up to this standard. Love the fact that, unlike Idol, it doesn't rely on the humiliating and talentless auditions, pretty much all of the ones shown were good quality. Definitely looking foward to tonight's installment!

  • by Beckala on February 04, 2008 at 10:08 AM

Aussie Dance was excellent I thought and defintely the new Idol! My only question is why doesnt Ten hold off on this show till 7 puts on DWTS and put it on at the same time. It would kill DWTS as it is far superior. I would rather see real dancers than the wannabe "celebrities" on DWTS. And the big plus is no Darryl or Sonia!
Surely SYTYCD would outrate DWTS? What do other bloggers think? I know I am sick of there never being anything on opposite DWTS. The other networks always seem to just throw in the towel and dont even try when it is on.
Anyway, seems the writers strike is over. Does that mean production will go ahead on new eps of our fav shows now? Or will we all have to wait till next year and put up with a short season and lots of repeats of shows like Lost, House etc?

  • by em on February 04, 2008 at 10:13 AM

Back from the back cracker.

Firstly, Jade. Methinks she protesteth the "I'm misunderstood" a wee bit much, so I was awfully glad she lost.
So I guess we can also add "School Of Rock" to the list of high rotation movies.
Hoping not to make that list is "Staying Alive" OMG what a waste of sequel.
Apparently in some circles people were receiving phone calls from Natalie Bassingsurname herself! Recorded ones of course, urging them to watch the show. Shirl must have a lot riding on this.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on February 04, 2008 at 10:46 AM

Being a lurker and loving the comments I was a getting a tad worried that the old site wasn't updating! Glad to find you all here :)
SYTYCD was OK last night. I'll hold judgement until the proper dancing starts.

  • by Nic on February 04, 2008 at 11:11 AM

@ Kate 'Natalie Bassingthwaite... please cover up the "girls"'
/makes mental note to watch SYTYCD

  • by miso_kool on February 04, 2008 at 11:25 AM

Sal with you on the Ch Nein comments for this week - SMH guide has "the Closer" at 9.30 tonight - but methinks this is error as am sure they are showing CSI whereever - some US city full of murders - therefore no Nein for me this week.

Generally I am not a fan of most reality shows so did not watch SYTYCDA or BL so will not offer a view but I am sure Ten will show so many promos I will know what happens or is about to happen.

The Amazing Race is one reality I do like and a shameful admission - although I am not in their demographic - DWTS (happy this year to have no Darryl).

Caught Samanatha Who last night - not bad - will be watching my Robin Hood tonight :))

Bereft pleased you found us. Hope the cracking of the back is not from the weighty bad TV over summer

  • by Cathy on February 04, 2008 at 11:51 AM

Wow, just actually looked at the ratings number... overall viewership must have been up as Samantha Who got 1.2 as did Miss Marple or were some people channel flicking and get registered watching both during their duration...
Cat - Oh, ET can't get enough of the story of Anna-Nicole... They will use the flimiest excuse to run a Anna-Nicole story... At one point, I thought it must be a edict from the Producers... "Thou shalt include an Anna-Nicole story in each episode"... It is really pathetic to watch. Also their padding is the most over the top I have seen. They are the best or the worst (depending on how you rate the skill) They spent 1/2 the show telling you what is going to be on in that episode and tomorrow. Plus recaping what you've already seen....

  • by Kate on February 04, 2008 at 01:46 PM

I wonder how much of SYTYCD's audience being because the cricket was a washout. I'm looking forward to seeing what next week's figures will be.

Tribal Mind wonders; How many cricket fans are likely to be modern dance fans? Not much overlap, I suspect.

  • by ozpuck on February 04, 2008 at 02:08 PM

ER yanked again? Typical 9. Never finish a series when you can p**s off viewers instead. Wrote a comment about SYTYCD before but I think it got lost in cyber space.
Really enjoyed it and it is definitely better than Idol. And more entertaining than that boring DWTS. Ten should have held it back and put it up against DWTS and give 7 a run for their money. It always amazes me how the other networks just dont even bother to try when DWTS is on. They dont try and compete at all , just lay down and die.

  • by em on February 04, 2008 at 02:39 PM

Re ANTM, my prediction re the blondes was off the mark (sigh). They ran 2nd and 4th not 1st and 2nd. I never thought Jade was good enough photographically - just could not see it. I thought Joni (2nd) had IT photogenically. Good luck to them ALL in their modelling careers.

  • by Rexx on February 04, 2008 at 03:30 PM

Caught the last 5 minutes of BL last night whilst waiting for SYTYCD to start. What a treat .... not. It was when the rejects were dejectedly trudging along the road when they were suddenly confronted by a couple of hummers and a mean lookin' dude in sunnies. Oh god, the comments to the camera were priceless, "I felt fear", "I didn't know what was going to happen" etc etc. How could they know unless they were pischik - god, give me strength.
Now on to SYTYCD, please can someone, somewhere do something about the opening titles - at the moment they are longer than "War and Peace". Also does Natalie Hugalot need to go the grope all the time? What is wrong with a good old fashioned handshake or a simple congratulations?
I can't finish without having a whinge about Ms Marple - why do writers make so many changes when they adapt a book to television that the finished product hardly bears any resemblance to the original? End of rant.

  • by Shoopie on February 04, 2008 at 03:48 PM

Cat on February 04, 2008 at 09:49 AM asked about Life on Mars - saw in on line ABC guide for Thursday next week (that is 14 Feb) at 8.30 I just checked again - seems to be new timeslot for new eps...
Earlier post of mine went into cyberspace - have no view on Teen's offerings last night as did not watch - figure I will work out what happens from endless promos.
Like Sal said - nothing on Nein this week - unless The Closer is on tonight.
And Wednesday this week may be movie night as aside from SPicks & Specks nothing for me... love Colin Firth but can give Ms Jones a miss this time.
BTW for Supernatural fans - back on next week - yay

  • by Cathy on February 04, 2008 at 04:30 PM

Oh Shoopie, concur! BL is so scripted... as if the rejects didn't know that they were still in the comp as a team.... just a minor detail but if they were really were rejected, why would they be walking down the road, covered in mud and with no bags? Actually, why I am even trying to apply logic to this reality show? Will stop that futile exercise now...

Hey TM, I am a cricket fan and like watching SYTYCDA as well. Mind, I'm not really a 50 overs hit and giggle fan.
I also like biffo and cars (have trained Master 6.6 to alert me in case I miss Top Gear, which he did this evening) and was known to watch wrestling at a younger age, back in the days of Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake, "Macho Man" Randy Savage (ooooh Yeah!)
Cathy, S&S will finish at 9pm, and I'm pretty sure that Colin Firth starts around about then. As for him and Kevin Bacon naked in a movie, I went to Rotten Tomatoes and read the synposis of whatever the movie was called. Meh.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on February 04, 2008 at 08:30 PM

PS I was so busy ranting earlier that I forgot to mention that as much as I adore Colliewobbles I just cannot picture Renee Whatever as Bridget Jones.
Bereft probably injured her back at the Hi 5 concert ... or Sth Coast audition for SYTYCD?

  • by Shoopie on February 04, 2008 at 08:37 PM

Like Cat I too used to watch ET but found they endlessly recycled stories as well as having a very unhealthy obsession with the celebrity de jour - Paris, Anna Nicole, Britney, and the couch jumper - that alone was enough to consign it to the must be missed pile - I now get my updates for shows coming and news on line from other blogs (sorry TM) like TV Gal on Zap2it.com She is pretty good on summing up the US offerings.
Bereft will still give Ms Jones a miss on thinking of going to cinema to see No Country for Old Men after work Wednesday at Bondi with my movie buddy - a friend who has already seen it asked if I would be OK going home on public transport - I replied I was the person who saw Silence of the Lambs by herself (9.30 pm session) and parked in a darkened side street in the burbs - so I figure I should be fine so long as I have my trusty MP3 (not Ipod) with me for tunes on train/ ferry/ bus on way home and yes I am likely to use all 3 depending on the timetabling

  • by Cathy on February 04, 2008 at 11:02 PM

Cathy, the day I went to see Silence of the Lambs (my 21st b'day), I had an encounter with "surveyors" near Pitt Street who asked me a lot of questions about my life, then wanted to take me back to their building to tell me how my answers applied to my life. An experience less scary than Silence of the Lambs.

I also sat through Interview With The Vampire laughing. C'mon, a short brown haired guy playing a tall thin blonde Lestat? What a joke.

The back and neck were not helped by Hi5 - sitting in front of the stage with bored Master 3.6. Mr Skerrick hitting a roo and the deceleration that ensued contributed as well. But the only think I could have offered to SYTYCD is the Chicken Dance.

Curse Shirl for moving Friends to 6pm, won't usually get home from work to see it, unless I remember to preprogramme my DVR...

Oh goodie Life on Mars will be back soon! Thanks Cathy. Being the ABC they should be able to manage 8 episodes in a row without moving it to 5 different timeslots. Nice that it will be on just before Lost so I will after many years have something to watch on Thursdays (or at least since Nein started screwing with ER). Speaking of which I still have several taped episodes to watch but going on the earlier advice here that Nein have cut it off at a critical juncture again I am not sure whether I should bother watching them. That ultimately is my problem with network telly nowadays - their treacherous behaviour makes me reluctant to commit to shows. On Sunday I considered watching Samantha Who but decided that unless it really makes an impact it will get shuffled and I am over chasing shows around the schedule. Four years ago that thought would never have occurred to me. Here endeth my rant for the day.

  • by Cat on February 05, 2008 at 08:33 AM

In response to some of the comments regarding Top Model. Interesting to note that this program has come under a fair amount of criticism in the US because none of the winners have actually gone on to become Top Models. hehehe.
Dance Australia was again quite good last night, but a bit long IMO. The editing is good, quite fast and to the point - none of those dire recaps that make up half of Loser.

  • by cronker on February 05, 2008 at 08:44 AM

Do we know who the new host for DWTS is yet? An earlier post says that Sonia has left the show too - is that right?

  • by JB on February 05, 2008 at 10:00 AM

em, it would be crazy for SYTYCD to be put up against DWTS. Dancing fans would be split between two similar shows and the real winner would be whatever was running on the other channels. The reason Ch 7 probably delayed DWTS this year is that they probably considered viewer fatigue for two programs in the same genre and decided 'It Takes Two' should come be run earlier in the year, before DWTS. I also don't think it's true to say that Ch 10 did not try to put anything decent against DWTS because they screened new episodes of The Simpsons and NCIS but Ch 9 pretty much gave up though.
Anyway, I think Sunday night at 7.30pm is the most competitive slot of the week with SYTYCD against 'Robin Hood', 'Who Do You Think You Are?', 'Kath & Kim'/'Samantha Who' and 60 Minutes.

  • by J Bar on February 05, 2008 at 10:47 AM

Hey cronker, are you related to cronk?

  • by Sticky Beak on February 05, 2008 at 11:13 AM

J Bar - I am with you, I always fail to understand why networks cram popular scheduling against each other. I know that the theory is to "steal" the other's audience but wouldn't it be better for them to put a popular show in a less competitive timeslot aka Tuesday or Thursday and get a top 20 rating show. To divide is not always conquering....

On a different note: I am looking for a new expression. We all know about a show "jumping the shark" to state that it has continued past its prime but what expression can I use to describe a show that by one episode destroys your faith in it and means that you no longer will watch it.... Last night's Letterman show is an example... Dave had Paris Hilton as a guest. That in itself I can just forgive, but not all the fawning and ass-kissing that ensued in the interview. Dave had heard that Paris was upset by his last interview asking too many questions about prison.... so he sent flowers, made phone calls and practically lay prostrate on the studio floor asking for forgiveness. It was awful.... Sorry Dave but as much as I have liked some of the segments like Moments in Presidential Speeches, your credibility has been shot to pieces & I can't enjoy your show anymore.... Vent & rant over...

Ps Can't imagine that Sonia would have left DWTS....

one and the same Sticky!

new blog, new year, new nick

it's to bring me into line with my nick on other TV forums.

  • by cronker on February 05, 2008 at 12:43 PM

Point taken , J Bar. I hadnt thought of that. And Sunday 7.30 will be a competitive night when Nine puts 60 mins back on and I suppose the ABC will air some period piece. At least we get some choice again, better than the boring summer viewing.

Good to know that Life on Mars is back soon. I loved that show and as Cat mentions at least when ABC airs a show we know it will stay where it is for the season. Oh and Cat, watch the ER eps, it may have ended on a cliffhanger but it was still excellent and worth viewing. I will probably seek out eps for download now though as I am not sure if that was the end of the season cliffhanger or not. It would have been nice if 9 had said it was the season final at the end of the ep but not a word. Typical 9! It is still the worst offender of this type of behaviour.

I was also interested to see Neighbours had a pick up in its ratings again. Must be the teenage girl involved with her teacher storyline. (I admit it! I watch Neighbours! Oh, the shame!!)

  • by em on February 05, 2008 at 01:09 PM

J Bar, on Sunday night at 7.30pm I found not a thing to watch.
Normally a huge ABC fan on Sun nights, but tried Robin Hood last year and never again.
Trouble is, then you put on a DVD & miss the 8.30pm program. Miss Marple more missable than most though.
But the other offerings? Tried Samantha, it was OK but not compulsive. I agree with Cat - no more chasing shows all over the schedule.
A must watch tonight is the doc on ABC where they 'tricked' the poor ex-hippie Muslim ladies into being interviewed. Should be a laugh!

  • by Sal on February 05, 2008 at 01:35 PM

em who wondered if ER was the season finale - the answer is no - there are another 10 episodes from that season (season 13) and then 14 more for season 14 (the current season). I agree with your suggestion to Cat to watch the recorded episodes - they are excellent.

Was happy last night as I watched my recording of Robin Hood - love that show - did not venture into FTA at all - tonight's Ms Mars so will be there.

Also for anyone watching Journeyman on 10HD - the on line guide has it at 10.30 pm start this week instead of 9.30 - no announcements of course at the end of last week's show - just an ad for SYTYCDA and BL.

Oh and on an unrelated issue - I was babysitting last weekend the the sprogs aged 7 & 8 had me reading from Enid Blyton's secret seven and watched an updated version of Andy Pandy on Foxtel... took me way back - parents are kids still interested in these stories?

  • by Cathy on February 05, 2008 at 02:13 PM

I am tempted to saying Jumping Paris but that would not get past TM I suspect.
Thanks ladies - I shall watch the ER eps.
TM -unusual one for you. How many folks watched the Super Bowl on SBS on Monday (10 am for hours)? Why? I use to watch grid-iron many years back (American boyfriend) and it is ok to watch as long as you realise it is actually not a football game but much closer to cricket. Full disclosure - I did not watch or tape it.

Tribal Mind replies: I don't understand your reference to Helen of Troy. NFL Superbowl 2008 is listedas getting 119,000 viewers, of whom 47,000 were in Melbourne.

  • by Cat on February 05, 2008 at 04:11 PM

TM, did OzTAM put out a Top 100 of the week for last week, or are those not returning until ratings period?

Tribal Mind replies: No they didn't and yes the weekly list is not returning till "official" ratings.

  • by Samuel on February 05, 2008 at 04:56 PM

Shoopie, I was going to a Christening on Sunday, so I knew I was probably going to miss BL. My hubby asked if I wanted to record it, and I said no, because I knew exactly what was going to happen, and predicted it, down to the phrases used by both Commando and contestants. BLATANT rip-off of the Black Team with the US version, and ten gave it away with the sneak peek (not that they actually gave it away, but when I saw them on the sand dunes all in black t-shirts with the commando, I figured what was happening). But now apparently there is a different twist - so i'm' hoping that ten is not going to be completely predictable - because there is no way I could believe if either of the Oz coaches pretended to be surprised by a black team - if I can figure it out, surely they could...Oh wait, maybe they can't!

  • by Beckala on February 05, 2008 at 05:36 PM

Cathy, I don't know about kids these days but The Famous Five and Secret Seven are my favourite books from my childhood ... although Anne did drive me insane cause she was such a sook.
Kate, have been wracking my brain and I think Cat has got it - jumping Paris - although I don't understand TM's reference to Helen of Troy? Oh, yes I do, the penny just dropped!!! The Trojan War, very clever, Cat.

  • by Shoopie on February 05, 2008 at 06:46 PM

Kate - perhaps instead of jumping Paris a la Cat's suggestion maybe doing the Viva (Viva Laughlin that is... ) so bad it is only worth one, a Vyle... or just call it couch jumping - no wait that implies a lunatic man who believes he is immortal and that aliens changed his own DNA - those scary surveyors of Mrs Skerrick. Seriously a show that destroys your faith (means you would need to have some faith in the beginning) - perhaps a Dallas where a whole season was a dream

  • by Cathy on February 05, 2008 at 10:44 PM

"Shoopie wrote: although I don't understand TM's reference to Helen of Troy? Oh, yes I do, the penny just dropped!!! The Trojan War, very clever, Cat."
No Shoopie - very clever TM! I was just being a smart-arse (my natural setting).
And thanks TM for the Super Bowl figures. Fascinated that nearly half the viewers were in Melbourne. Maybe they have a lot of visiting Americans or a lot of people who have lived in the States. Or maybe it was simply that SBS only showed it in a few places.

TM replies: For readers mystified, an update -- the original question was whether the term "Jumping Paris" (on the analogy of Jumping the shark) could be applied to an episode which turns you off a complete series. I assumed this was a reference to Helen of Troy. It may, however, refer to the phenomenon that the person we call FCHC (French Capital Hotel Chain) taints everything she touches. Or does this only confuse the issue further?
The superbowl was shown in every capital, but clearly in Melbourne they are obsessed with all forms of football.

  • by Cat on February 06, 2008 at 07:19 AM

The Kylie special was entertaining. Those comedy skits between the songs were daggy and cheesy but they still made me laugh. Reminded me of the old Donny and Marie show that I watched as a child. What happened to the Joan Collins skit though? She was shown in the promos and was the first guest in the credits but she never appeared on the show. Did Ch 7 snip her appearance out of the show or did they stuff up and leave out a segment?

  • by J Bar on February 06, 2008 at 07:41 AM

Cathy forgot to mention. The minute they mentioned coming back to their building to interpret my answer myself and my companion ran very very very very very very fast away. Unfortunately I lost my hairband and am worried they may have my DNA.
Not sure where my mind was at last night. Missed the Kylie special.
It seems that there's no Moonlight this week or next week, have Nein quietly retired it?

  • by Bereft Skerrick on February 06, 2008 at 08:05 AM

The Kylie special last night was so cool! A good lead-in to It Takes Two the following week.
And also loving SYTYCDA, lovely to finally have an Aussie version!
