The ratings race: Week 19

This blog is now a heritage item -- worth studying but no longer current. To join the latest discussion on media and popular culture, go to www.smh.com.au/tribalmind.
Channel Nine won Saturday night, but not by enough. Over the week, Seven averaged 29.4 per cent of the prime time audience, Nine averaged 28.5, Ten 21.4, ABC 14.9 and SBS 5.8. Nine's only hope this year is that Seven has nothing of interest for the second half, when hits like Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy have ended their seasons. It does raise the possibility that Seven might break the habit of a lifetime and start running the new episodes of its top shows close to their showing times in America.

Ooh, the suspense. At this point in the week, Seven is slightly ahead, averaging 29.7 per cent of the prime time audience to Nine's 28.7 per cent. Seven won Friday night because the southwesterners' enthusiasm for AFL outweighs the northeasteners' enthusiasm for NRL.

But this could still end up as Nine's first winning week of the year, because Nine has a habit of winning Saturdays.

Updated 10 am, Wednesday May 9
At this point a year ago, this column wrote the following report: "Peter Costello's budget speech on the ABC at 7.30 attracted 798,000 viewers in the mainland capitals on Tuesday night -- a strangely small audience for such an important national event. Apparently a few Australians were distracted by some sort of dancing show on Channel Seven, which pulled in 2.7 million viewers. There were also newsbreaks on the commercial stations about some sort of mining story."

Ah, nostalgia. Last Tuesday night there were no such distractions -- Beaconsfield was at peace and Dancing With The Stars had been replaced by It Takes Two which attracted a mere 1.5 million viewers in the mainland capitals. So of course the Treasurer's budget bonanza speech was bound to attract many more viewers than last year.

Er, no. It pulled just 707,000. So whatever else he may be, the aspirant Liberal leader is not a ratings-grabber. For the sake of the party, could it be time for him to hand over to the more telegenic Tony Abbott?

Channel Nine finds itself in the rare position of having a chance of winning the week. Although Seven won last night, It Takes Two did not do as well as Dancing, and the prime time audience shares for the week so far stand at: Nine 30.7 per cent, Seven 30.2 per cent, Ten 19.6, ABC 13.7, SBS 5.8.

Just to prove that this year's Big Brother is not the flop the critics are claiming, Channel Ten this morning put out a press release which began "Big Brother continues to rate highly in TEN's target 18-49 demographic with strong timeslot wins for both Monday shows". It offered this list of most watched programs last night with viewers in that age group: 1 Desperate Housewives (7). 2 Big Brother Live Nominations - 10. 3 Brothers & Sisters - 7. 4 Big Brother - 10. 5 Home & Away - 7. 6 Today Tonight - 7. 7 Seven News - 7. 8 Supernatural - 10.

Meanwhile, Seven won the night with all viewers, but is only on 28.3 per cent of the prime time audience for the week so far, while Nine is on 32.5 per cent. Much depends on whether tonight's It Takes Two can hold most of the viewers who had stuck with Dancing With The Stars.

We hope it wasn't anything we said. Last week this column announced the winners of The Bogies, which are awards for achievement in television. Last night Channel Nine's version, called The Logies, got its lowest audience in a decade. Channel Nine still won the night, with 38 per cent of the prime time viewers, but gone are the days when 2 million Australians in the mainland capitals would tune in for the red carpet arrivals. Nine's new semi-reality show, The Lost Tribes also had a disastrous debut against Where Are They Now

Australian televiewers love a grand finale and last week they revelled in two of them -- a Sunday freak show called Australia's Got Talent and a Tuesday schmoozefest called Dancing With The Stars. They were the reason Channel Seven won yet another week in the ratings race, averaging 29.2 per cent of the prime time audience, and the reason Seven will be worrying about retaining its lead this week.

Channel Nine won Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, and ended up averaging 27.2 per cent for the week, a figure which is bound to rise once Seven loses its grip on Tuesday nights. Dancing will be replaced by It Takes Two, which averaged only 1.5 million viewers last year.

Ten should have done better than 22.1 per cent, but Big Brother's brigade of blondes just isn't firing this year, and on Wednesdays House is regularly blown down by Spicks and Specks and The Chaser's War on Everything, which both attract more than 1.3 million viewers in the mainland capitals.

That's why the ABC managed a healthy 15.6 share for the week. That left SBS with 5.6 per cent, largely due to Mythbusters (657,000) and an Inspector Rex repeat (433,000).

COMMENTS

With the exception of about four or five programs listed in here, this just shows most Australians are content with watching mind numbing crap. When will TV networks show some respect for viewers' intellect ? When will viewers revolt and demand better programming?

  • by Greg on May 06, 2007 at 07:50 PM

Greg, you miss the point... but only just.
The networks ARE respecting the viewers intellect... it just so happens that there ISN'T much intellect.
If there really was a great demand for fascinating documentaries, or news that was more than tabloid rubbish, then there would be competition for it.
Here's a little excercise: Add up the total viewers for TT and ACA (they show simultaneously with near identical content and ranked 9 and 27 overall last week)
Considering these shows offer identical BS... it is scary to think that when you combine the audience, you get EASILY the highest rating show every week.
The networks serve it up because the viewers love it.
It isn't an indictment on the networks. It is an indictment on us.
Supply and demand Greg. That's what it is all about. And demand is high for mind-numbing shite.

I can't believe Jessica Rowe got boned for "a perceived lack of chemistry with co-host Karl Stefanovic." That is hilarious.
It just shows how clueless Nine are about the problems with the today show. Jessica has a bright personality, Mel and Kochie have bright personalities, the only one of the 4 major morning hosts lacking that trait is Karl. If you want the Today show fixed...BONE KARL!

  • by Ken on May 07, 2007 at 12:50 AM

I find the comment that BB07 'isn't firing' to be an interesting one, TM. There are 3 BB shows that you have listed in the top 22 - and if you drop out the two finals (which, by your own analysis, drew exceptionally large audiances compared to what is likely to replace the series in question), those become 3 in the top 20. And they also have yet another hour show in the top 30! I'm sure a lot of networks around the world would quite happily accept ratings failures like these! Perhaps the show is rating more poorly than it did last year - but I seem to remember all sorts of dire predictions about the series being renewed for '07 based on 'poor ratings' at this time in the 06 series, none of which have come to pass.
On a related topic; I wish people would stop thinking of themselves as the sole guardians of good taste when it comes to television. The 'I don't like it so anyone who does is pathetic' arguement is more pretentious than current affairs advertising. If enough people are watching it to put a show into the top 30 then it must be doing something right, and those who enjoy it have just as much right to be entertained by their television sets as self-appointed guardians of quality television. As it happens, I can't stand the Dancing With The Stars series, or Australia's Got Talent; so I didn't watch the finals - that doesn't mean that I have to make derogatory remarks about those who did do so in order to validate my personal tastes.
At least we don't seem to have as many complaints this year about series going past the scheduled time, another personal complaint of mine. While I don't like it when it happens and even less so when it interferes with my television scheduling, what I appreciate (and many others seem not to) is that anything that's live and unscripted has the potential to get out of control, time-wise. While not everyone who complains about time overruns is also a member of the 'I hate show X so anyone who likes it must be [insert insult here]' brigade, there does appear to be a significant overlap. Given the choice between something that's pre-digested, pre-scripted, pre-packaged, and pre-cisely edited to fit a certain time frame and the same programme with the potential chaos that comes with a live presentation, I'll take the live show anytime - it has a greater likelyhood to be entertaining. And if I don't like the show, I don't have to watch it - and certainly don't have to complain about it; I would rather ignore it and wait for something I do enjoy.

News coming from internet TVland is that Lost has two seasons left (just in time for syndication).
Interesting part of the news is that the next season will run uninterrupted (no breaks for Christmas etc) from January.
Might give credence to the possibility that Channel 7 might screen it at the same time.

  • by canoli on May 07, 2007 at 07:32 AM

Mike Bourke rants: "...I wish people would stop thinking of themselves as the sole guardians of good taste when it comes to television..."

On the surface, your comments appear to be reasonable. However, consider this. The flipside of people not writing in to complain about bad programs and network practices (ie, simply ignoring them), would be to also not write in about programs they view in a positive light, So if you shouldn't write about the bad stuff nor the good stuff, then this column would make for some pretty dull reading!
I submit that it's only natural for people to vent their frustrations or to praise the praiseworthy, as they see it. Saying something like 'you must have rocks in your head to like BB', is simply another way of getting across how they feel about that particular program. It's a natural form of expression and doesn't necessarily mean that the person making it thinks of themself as the 'sole guardian of good taste'.
Their comments, along with others, form a cross-section of opinion about programs and programming, which after all, is the raison d'tre of this column.

  • by damien on May 07, 2007 at 07:49 AM

Talk about a disappointing night for Nine! The Lost Tribes figures are disastrous, and what happened to the Logies, snoozefest anyone?
Ten did well with Big Brother though.

  • by bugzy on May 07, 2007 at 09:47 AM

When are we going to stop importing foreign "stars" to present our award shows. I flicked over once to the Logies and saw Jessica Alba (I think it was her) and Ioan Gruffydd presenting an award looking completely lost and underwhelmed. Haven't we got enough local "celebrities" to present the awards. It just makes the cringe factor so much worse. It really is lowest common denominator television. Also, what's with the red carpet thing? I really don't need to know how much the dress cost or whose jewellery they're wearing.

I agree with Mike Bourke, not because I think that people should not say what they like and dislike (as Damien tries to misrepresent Mike's comments as) in the column.

What I resent about some of the comments in this column and other places is the value judgements placed on the comments. Damien says peoiple are not saying anything more than giving an opinion when they say "you must have rocks in your head to watch..." but I beleive they are making value judgement.

Who are you guys to demand that another person "should not" be entertained by one things or another because you are not. I would prefer it if people would keep comments deriding other people's level of intellect and so on to a minimum and just comment on their opinion of the shows and leave it at that.

Don't get me wrong, I don't diagree with a lot of the comments, but from a judgement point of view, that is personal.

As they say in politics - play the policy (tv show/network) not the man (viewer).

  • by chris on May 07, 2007 at 09:54 AM

To Mike Bourke: I will continue to rail against garbage like BB and those who view it, because it allows stations like 10, to continue to pour low-grade TV onto our screens. I don't consider myself better or worse than anybody else ( i probably watch shows that others totally dislike), but i know crap when i see it and i'm sorry to say BB is total crap. Plus if we didnt complain to blogs like this, then idiot stations like 10 would never know that this blimp on the statistics radar is not watching their garbage or their beloved adverts.

  • by Garry S on May 07, 2007 at 09:55 AM

The Logies last night, hmmm.... Where do I start, the opening with the David Koch Character just wasn't funny, keeping that in mind the Hosts I though actually did a good job with what they had to work with, although I was slightly cringing with Adam’s Steve Irwin impersonations, there didn’t seem to be as much of a balance between networks, “What’s good for you” and “Brand power” was less than amusing, although I am sure whichever network was too broadcast it, they would concentrate on their shows too.

I think they should really start focusing on the future instead of the past and stop focussing on Bert & Graham, we all know what they did but there are plenty of Great people out there that have done a lot for Television in this country.

The Arrivals show was really not worth watching, there were no worthwhile interviews and the hosts didn’t seem to have the best interview techniques. Maybe next year they would be better sticking comedians like Hamish and Andy on the Red Carpet. Do we really need a Best Dressed Award???? I mean Sonia looked great but honestly where is the Credibility.

Lastly TM, I think it would be interesting to see a comparison between the “Most Popular” Logie Recipients to the Highest rating Oztam shows just to see how much of a correlation there is, however I do understand the readers of TV Week can’t really be used as an accurate sample of Australia’s population.

Ken, I agree the problem with Today is Karl. He has had 3 female co-hosts who all left because of a perceived lack of chemistry with HIM! Tracy, Jessica and Sarah.
Reminds me of a boss I used to know who had 20 staff quit in a period of 18 months. The CEO blamed the staff because they didn't get along with the boss! The real reason? Hmmm - do I need to draw a picture???
Also - the Logies were down for a few reasons;-
It had stiff competition in the 7.30-8.30 slot. Ugly Betty, Big Brother and Robin Hood all managed over 1m each!
The lead in of Lost Tribes - I saw a glimpse and was offended how racist it was. The white family complained bitterly about the "savages" - all who were dark skinned and couldn't speak English!!
This makes Celebrity Dog School look like Masterpiece Theater!
And as for the telecast itself - well of course TOO LONG!
Fifi was embarrassing. Giggling like a schoolgirl and never once taking a breath! Thank goodness for Michael Weatherly. NOW HE WAS ENTERTAINING! (and he actually allowed some mighty sensitive questions and was happy to play the good natured fool!)
Adam Hills surprisingly was off and David Hughes was just crude. The over-rated Hamish and Andy were just plain awful.
A big plus - the memorial tribute with Damien Leith singing. Very touching.
I missed the Chaser War guys mucking around. Obviously their brand of humour wasn't the Logie producers type.
Oh well - congrats to all nominees and winners (some were actually deserving!).
Next year - bring in the drowning music to cut speeches to at least 1 minute!

  • by bettestreep on May 07, 2007 at 10:14 AM

Logies ceremony was probably the funniest and least self-absorbed it has been in years. Adam Hills did a great job. Probably didn't get the amazing figures it has in the past due to relatively strong competition against it. Robin Hood over a million, Ugly Betty, BB07, Greys etc. I would imagine also that the rating figure given would have been an average over the total runtime??

  • by cronk on May 07, 2007 at 10:14 AM

About the Logies....

The good: Hillsy was very good, except as much as I cringed with the Steve Irwin part of his routine, isn't it best to remembed The Croc Hunter with fondness instead of calling it taboo? He should have been the ONLY host, although he did seem to roam the stage like a wandering wildebeest during his opening monologue.

More good: Michael Weatherly, doesn't seem like a stuck up Hollywood type of years past. Hope he did well with the starlets at the after party!

The bad: Now we know why FiFiPox should stay on radio. At least on DWTS and TGYH she's on for a minimal time. I've seen headless chickens interview better and giggle less.

The dogawful: Dave Hughes. Dreadful. Anyone else notice the wild applause after his monologue WHEN he said let's get on with it? The only highlight was when he called Vyle Randypants a Richard Cranium.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on May 07, 2007 at 10:31 AM

The hosts were pretty good on the logies. Dave Hughes was hilarious. I could see that Adam Hills was a bit weak at the beginning but I think he may just have been really nervous because he got better later in the show. Surprisingly, Fifi Box also did a decent job as one of the hosts, especially with the bloke from NCIS but he also obviously made an effort. Maybe Ch 7 should have got her as a co-host of It Takes Two, after all. Although Kate Richie is popular, I can't see her bringing a spark to that the show that it needs like Fifi Box or Sonia Kruger.

The whole Logies format needs some serious work if it is going to attract a big audience again though. The shameless plugs for the sponsor's products is getting beyong ridiculous. Same goes for the obvious plugs for Ch 9 programs. Why do we still have overseas guests? What the hell do Avril Lavigne, James Morrison or the Fantastic Four movie stars have to do with Aussie TV????

Also, I think the winners of some categories could just be mentioned/shown and not have a speech, such as the news, public affair, documentary categories. Perhaps it's time that some categories were changed, like how many different types of shows fit into the 'Light Entertainment' Category such as comedy, variety, game, chat show but then you have a whole category for 'Most Popular Sports Program', when there are only about five of those on tv. The way TV Week manipulates the vote is also a joke. I seriously do not believe that Natalie Blair is in the top 8 most popular personalities in Australia. For some reason, TV Week have supported her in a big way and they convince readers to vote for her. It's ridiculous and makes the awards look like a joke.

  • by J Bar on May 07, 2007 at 11:08 AM

I think chris is splitting hairs in an effort of bolster his so called argument. Quite obviously, no one has the right to 'demand' what others should or should not watch. But, people place themselves and others into groups all the time, whether consciously or subconsciously and this is often reflected in their self expression. Certainly nothing to get worked up over. So get off your high horse and relax a little...

  • by damien on May 07, 2007 at 11:10 AM

I agree with Mike and Chris. It's alright to bag a show if you don't like it, ie, "BB is a pile of crap and I refuse to watch it", but I don't agree with a comment such as "....is an idiot for watching BB and needs to have his head read". See the subtle difference?
The first way is telling everyone how you feel about a programme, the second way is putting someone down because they like something that you don't.
By the way, I happen to like the concept of BB but I'm not overly impressed by it this year. As for other programmes, Greys Anatomy and Boston Legal just go from strength to strength.

  • by robbieb on May 07, 2007 at 11:11 AM

logies = utter waste of time

watched UB, then the Chaser repeat on ABC2, then a disc recording of Lost. far better way to spend the time on the tv.

  • by arthur on May 07, 2007 at 11:31 AM

Adam Hills summed up the Logies at the beginning, the "15hours to go" comment but, was still leaning toward the word understatement.

I'm not sure, but isn't there industry voted awards-the silver Logies. I remember reading somewhere that you have your "most popular..." awards which are voted upon by readers, whilst you have others which are voted upon by the industry awards-appropriately named Silver Logies.

I didn't like Fifi Box. Her giggling, was really annoying.

  • by John on May 07, 2007 at 12:14 PM

Where is Crossing Jordan ranked in What Australia watched, week ending May 5, 2007? I suppose Oztam's estimate for Tuesday night was totally off with DWTS.

Logies? What Logies? Must have missed it. Yipeeee!! :-)

  • by Bluedave on May 07, 2007 at 01:34 PM

Mike Bourke says - "... and those who enjoy it have just as much right to be entertained by their television sets."

TV shouldn't just be about entertainment should it? I dearly and sincerely hope not.
I want to be educated by it and kept informed.
Shows like ACA and TT do the public a disservice. Four corners, Foreign Correspondent etc would all have a truly decent audince if they were marketed to the hilt like the flag bearers of the commercial networks.
Mike Bourke also writes: " what I appreciate (and many others seem not to) is that anything that's live and unscripted has the potential to get out of control, time-wise."
Unless it's a breaking news story or a sporting event gone into extra time I can't see ANY reason that shows should extend beyond their time slot.
I believe they are currently manipulating things like BB and the game shows to make sure that the audience moves into new timeslots.
Poor form. It should be punishable by network executive hanging.

I saw the start to the Logies (and no more than that - excruitiating stuff and nonsense). That David Koch was unfunny and unnecessary - but maybe that was the point? So is the real David Koch.

  • by David @ Wahroonga on May 07, 2007 at 01:58 PM

RE: The Logies. LOVED Adam Hills and Hughesy! Especially Dave Hughes' serve on Kyle Sandilands! I'm a fan of Fifi's, but I think her nerves got the better of her - wasn't nearly as cringeworthy as some are making out though. Daryl showed in his acceptance speech why DWTS goes for so long every week - he can turn half an hour of television into a three hour yawn fest! I was happy with Kate Ritchie winning the gold, glad that it wasn't the sympathy vote for Rove (and I think he was probably glad of that too). Really don't understand how Natalie Blair was nominated for Gold. Or Bert, for that matter! Surely there aren't THAT many fans of Family Feud?! Next year, maybe they could get the Chaser boys to do the red carpet coverage - exactly why do they give that job to Jules Lund? He can barely string a sentence together at the best of times, let alone when he is talking about fashion!

  • by Beckala on May 07, 2007 at 02:02 PM

I really wanted to watch the logies, but it was just too awful. I did see the one bright spark - Dave Hughes' dig at Kyle, or rather, the look on Kyle's face.

The Logies are sad, because not only are they awful viewing of themselves, but they remind you of how crap Australian TV really is.

The only Aussie shows I actually watch, I realised, are Spicks and Specks and the Chaser, and Australia's Next Top Model on Foxtel.

  • by katherine on May 07, 2007 at 02:09 PM

Re: "Dave Hughes. Dreadful. Anyone else notice the wild applause after his monologue WHEN he said let's get on with it?"

Are you kidding? Sure, you might not like the guy or his monologue (and fair enough, too), but he clearly won the crowd over. I think it's pretty obvious that the cheers at the end were in recognition of his comedy, not because it was over. Check it out on YouTube if you missed it.

As for the Red Carpet, I think that's where it gets embarrassing. This isn't the Oscars. What's with the "Oh, I'm dressed by Vera Wang" pretentious show? Dear oh dear...

It definitely needed comedians out there to have a little fun with it.

  • by Jackson on May 07, 2007 at 02:26 PM

Since no one has said it yet, im gonna be the first to say congratulations Kate Ritchie! She deserved it, and her speech was very sweet. She looked amazing too, and was probably the best dressed on the night. As for the worst dressed, Michala Banas... no comment.
Overall the show was good, but i agree the news awards are quite boring, and it could be cut down a bit. As for the hosts, they were pretty good too, but Adam looked very uncomfortable at the start of the show, walking up and down the stage. I think Ch 9 would be pretty happy with 1.7 mil, considering the competition.
By the way, i think Lost should finish up this season, 2 more seasons is really pushing it.

  • by Michael on May 07, 2007 at 03:07 PM

I do not particularily like Where Are They Now, but I would much rather watch that than watch The Lost Tribes, I agree with what bettestreep said above, it is quite racist and only fuels ignorant people's 'ignorance' on certain people n countries....
As for the Logies, didnt wanna watch it but just wanted to know who won, so it worked out fine for me since I live in WA, I got the results 2hours before it was shown on TV..had an early night atleast...

  • by Sarah on May 07, 2007 at 03:33 PM

The shield - in the supplement tv guide in the SA Sunday Mail yesterday, there was a follow up in relation to a question asked about The Shield - apparently 10 yanked it off from 11.30 at night because it wasn't rating! Fancy that!! Who would have thought that a quality drama stuffed about timing wise by all and sundry just wouldn't rate at 11.30pm! Supposedly will be back later in the year, so keep an eye out in the 2.00 - 4.00 am timeslot!
(can you tell I am annoyed :) )

  • by ozinoz on May 07, 2007 at 04:06 PM

  • by paora on May 07, 2007 at 04:15 PM

I thought the accompanying cheers/applause for the Logie awarded to the story on 'Sexual Abuse of Aboriginals...' was not appropriate considering the subject matter. Perhaps another reason to change the news awards?

  • by cc on May 07, 2007 at 04:20 PM

It really did seem like the wild applause was because Hughes had finished, not because of his crude act. He essentially said "let's get on with the show" and there was almost a standing ovation.

That said, the monologues really did go on for way too long, as there would have been many audience members hanging for their next ciggie or hanging for a leak.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on May 07, 2007 at 05:12 PM

I thought Fifi was a great co-host last night. She was the sole reason I watched the Logies last night. Most would'nt have expected mush from her but she's so fun to watch... I'd take her hosting over Bert or Daryl anyday.

  • by Benji on May 07, 2007 at 05:27 PM

In a follow-up to Canoli's earlier comments regarding the future of Lost, there have been some very recent developments of that report.
ABC today announced that Lost will end in 2010, after three more seasons, shortened to 16 episodes each. This means that after this season, there will be 48 episodes left, which is the equivalent of two full seasons.
This is a highly positive move for the producers as they can now map out the rest of the series and dispell the ridiculous rumors that they don't know where the show is heading.
The producers also said that by dividing the final 48 episodes into shortened, 16-episode arcs, they can reveal far more answers and the show can move at a faster pace.
As a huge Lost fan, this is all fantastic news, especially as it means that Lost will never actually be cancelled. This amazing story will be told right to the very end, and that is what it deserves.
It is also going to be moved to an earlier timeslot in the US, where it is expected to attract greater family viewership.
It will be interesting to see how this announcement affects Lost's ratings in Australia. If it is given enough publicity, it may draw more viewers back to the show now that they know that there is a definite ending in sight, and that it is not going to go on forever.

  • by Marty on May 07, 2007 at 05:49 PM

To Cathy who said that AFL should be replaced with movies on weekends. I'm sure it would only be replaced with re-run movies anyway... Give me the Swans on tv in Sydney anyday!!!

  • by cc on May 07, 2007 at 05:51 PM

With the logies.
I haven't watched it yet. I taped UB while watching BB and then when UB was finished, switched the recorder over to Logies. So i missed the first half hour, so can anyone explain the David Koch saga to me?
I think the reason why the ratings were down was the strong competition but mainly because it was TOO LONG. I mean it went almost as long as the Oscars, which is ironic considering the Logies are about Aussie programs yet most of our content is imported from the US!

  • by stephen on May 07, 2007 at 06:02 PM

I saw bits of the logies (during ads of UB and GA) and agree with most of the posts - Adam Hills looked nervous at the start, David Hughes, no different to how he was on the Glasshouse and Fifi all giggles. The commentators on the red carpet were appalling! I thought that Meagan Gale was boring last year but at least she sounded sincere and knowledgeable about the clothes and designers. Some of the clothes were so bad!
I disagree with those saying the news stories should not e telecast. I think drop a couple of the popular voting (oh, sorry forgot the money raised from the SMS voting probably pays for the Logies!) or shorten acceptance speeches and drop a couple of the "performances" and monologues. I did see the tribute to those that died in the last year and thought that was really well done - probably the highlight of the evening.

What do you mean no-one watches it? Sure it doesnt rate like League does, but the peak figures are decent for Sydney, and the average figure is OK too, especially when an average figure has to be viewed for 3 hours continuously. You want a movie go to another channel.
122,000 watched it on Saturday night (for the full 3 hours, peak is higher) and 77,000 avge watched it on Saturday afternoon. Thats almost 200,000 people in Sydney alone watching 6 hours of AFL on one day. Not bad for a non AFL state, and theres worse ways to grow the game than actually air it - Im looking at you Nein with your NRL broadcasts into Melbourne... oh thats right, there isnt any. Someone better get Eddie fired before he kills soemthing else...

  • by Mat on May 07, 2007 at 06:47 PM

Why are they putting football on at night?
The weekend evenings have always been family-friendly times, where the whole family could watch TV together.
Now we have Dad watching AFL (or the other codes) on his own, while the kids & Mum disappear into other rooms to watch DVDs or other programs on other sets.
I have to admit that I was really pleased last night when my hubby said he wasn't going to watch the AFL again. He said there's no excitement or passion in football any more, that it's just like watching men at work. That's the legacy of professional sport these days.
So this household will be able to spend some more time together, even if it's just watching TV programs or DVDs.
Excellent result!

RE: David Koch thing at Logies - to open the show, channel 9 got that appallingly bad comedian from whatever that horrific comedy show is (the late shift? that ring any bells? It had the guy who was the new version of Nudge on Hey Dad, wow, that's showing my age) doing his impression of David Koch. I thought it was mildly amusing (I smiled when he said the phrase "Koch-meister", but that was about it) but really unneccessary, when you consider that it went for almost four hours... I also found it unneccessary for Avril Lavigne to give a very average (and I suspect mimed) performance - she didn't even have the decency to applaud for people, every time they cut to her, she was sitting there looking like a bored teenager (which she no longer is, judging by the huge diamond engagement ring on her left hand).

cc, i also found the applause RE: sexual abuse among aboriginals odd, but it was in support for the group who had the courage to make that documentary, so while it seemed odd to view, at the same time it was honouring people who were brave enough to tackle this contentious issue, and this was probably the first time they had been publicly acknowledged for it.

And finally, re: Cathy's suggestion to show movies rather than AFL - I'd rather watch a dodgy re-run movie than a boring AFL match. But that said, channel 7 have actually been showing some half-decent movies on a Friday night at the moment, i've been watching quite a few of them. So the thought of an AFL match sent me straight to my home dvd collection, where I watched a film i'd already seen (if it had been a film on channel 7, I probably would have watched it, like I did on Friday night), but enjoyed it more than if i'd watched the Swans game. Sorry, just not my thing, don't know anyone who watches AFL, so i'd really rather see seven screen movies than aerial ping pong.

Marty I am a big Lost fan and I have been pleased with the rate that the reveal has picked up in the last 6 episodes (US eps not Oz eps) but 3 years is too long!! It is not good news and I am sure it will see the audience drop not pick up because with the current viewer attention spans 3 years will be regarded as indefinite. They need to do something like a 25 episode season next year and wrap it up and given the revelations in those last few episodes there is plenty of scope to do that. WARNING BIG SPOILER ALERT----- Besides Charlie and all the female characters will be dead by then.

  • by Sarah on May 08, 2007 at 11:06 AM

The creators of Lost said from the beginning that they envisioned spanning about 5 seasons, so I have no problem with it ending in 2010. And whatever the ratings, it will not be wrapped up prematurely because it's become an integral part of American pop culture and DVDs sell extremely well.

  • by Fielding on May 08, 2007 at 11:33 AM

I heard that Kellie Connelly is going to be the permanent co-host on Today.

  • by cronk on May 08, 2007 at 11:58 AM

For Medium show fans, it's been renewed for a 4th season and as a non-serialised show, it'll probably get a 5th season also, for North American syndication purposes.

Unless Nine are willing to pay for a live in nanny at her home, to take her 3 kids to school (as her husband Peter Fitzsimmons gets up at 4 am for his Sydney radio gig), I greatly doubt Lisa Wilkinson (who's knocked back Seven's 9 - 11 am morning show offer) will take on a job offer co-hosting Nine's Today show. Plus she can see the bad way Nine treated Jess, who I didn't mind. Nine were foolish not to have given the co-hosting job to Sharyn Ghidella who's also currently on maternity leave (but have now lost that chance, as she's signed with Seven Brisbane), so should stick with Kelly Connolly, who has a warm personality and find her a new male co-host.

Although Larry Emdur is a 1000 times better than Karl Stuffashit - do you think Channel 7 would be so STUPID as to hire Jessica Rowe???
She has caused nothing but trouble with Nine and Ten - and no doubt will do same at Seven.
Let the stick retire into motherhood and let's never hear from her again (well until New Idea buys her "exclusive" story of course!).
As for her gutless wonder of a husband - why not stick up for your wife? You could easily have demanded Jessica be treated better or walk!!!
And paora - the rumour mill is running amok on what Karl has on someone high up at Nine. If you word it carefully, I am sure it can be posted...

But, I'm sure a case could be made for people being less likely to find their entertainment on the tube, and heading to the internet instead.
That description suits me quite a bit. Not altogether, I still am glued to (too) many shows somedays... (I spent Sunday night catching up on TV I'd taped during the week - First Tuesday, Heroes, Earl, etc...)
btw, why is it whenever I go out on a Monday (and I don't bother taping the Despos) someone comes on here and says it was a great episode? Yeesh. Happens every time.

  • by tqd on May 08, 2007 at 05:22 PM

I'm going to stand up for Jessica Rowe.
Liked her on ten's news and liked her even better on the Today show.
She IS intelligent. It seems most people judging her as bad couldn't get past her laugh (that is also part of her appeal).
Is it a case that a lovely looking lady isn't viewed as credible?
She is a great advocate of mental health issues.
She knows news and asked probing questions - she didn't just go for light hearted banter or batting her eyelids.
I think Channel 9 treated her appallingly. And if Eddie the Idiot did really make his "boned" comment about her they didn't know what they had.
Jessica is a sight better than Koch's Mel and Nat (both of whom strike me as dense and demographic driven)- and ever so much better than Lisa Wilkinson who strikes me as more of a cheap shock jock in men's clothing (in the sense of attitude).
So where are the credible, competent women? I think they're on ABC TV and radio.

  • by David @ Wahroonga on May 08, 2007 at 05:38 PM

Do any readers know what the premise of Mick Molloy's new
'The Nation' comedy show on Nine
is about. I don't see it being up against The Chaser anytime soon,
but it'd probably work better to trial it in an 11 pm timeslot. After the disaster of his 1999 Saturday night show on Nine (which I didn't mind, as Nine at least took a punt on it), I'm surprised Nine would take another punt with him.

  • by Nick on May 08, 2007 at 05:43 PM

  • by Shoopie on May 08, 2007 at 06:55 PM

David - I don't think Jessica is stupid - FAR from it.

She went to court to release herself from TEN's 6 month notice and WON. She secured a very lucrative contract with Nine for $500K per year over 3 years. And despite her dismal performance (mainly due to Karl Stuffnoshit) she negotiated a golden handshake of about $1m to leave Nine and not return.

These are examples of a very smart and ambitious woman.

She is up there with Jana Wendt (who also negotiated very lucrative contracts and golden handshakes).

The real fools - as you state - are executives like Eddie Muck-Ire.

Clueless from the word go - and now they are paying for it in $$$$. First Jana and now Jessica. These fiascos have cost Nein over $3m !!!!!!

And at the end of the day - they ask the staff to cut costs and are monitoring their phone calls and toilet breaks.

I don't like Jessica - but I certainly admire her ability to make a loads of moulah!

Sorry David but disagree with you, except on one point. Jessica Rowe was obviously intelligent enough to negotiate an extremely good contract with great contingency clauses should she be boned.... BUT... re treatment of Ch9 ... they went to court to assist her gain release from her contract at 10....they kept her on air even after she consistently gaffed & guffawed & the ratings plummeted... they consistently gave her air space and magazine space to promote her book on her mum's battle... Jessica had credibility when she just read a news autocue ... she should have remained a newsreader... main problem with Jessica is probably because of her mother's illness, Jessica is so determined to be bubbly & happy 24/7, fair enough but at 6am in the morning ... it was just too full on to watch & hear... plus often inappropriate... a not so fr fetched example might be ... news item ... 600 people dead or maimed... cue Jessica ... smiling oh well look on the bright side at least the cute kitty cat survived this tragedy, aw isn't she cute... can't upset people eating brekkie... When asked to tone things done, she refused ... saying this is who I am... I am determined to be chirpy & giggly... so she knew in doing so, she would be boned...

Posted by Shoopie: look what happened to Ellen Fanning ... left ABC and joined 60 Minutes amid much fanfare and where is she now?? Late night news I believe but I could be wrong.

Doesn't she host the Sunday program now? I may be wrong, but I have vague recollections of seeing her on there (which these days is the most credible program Channel Nein has!) when I've been channel surfing.

RE: ITT, just switched over, good lord, there are some shockers! My bet is on Mimi McPherson to leave first, TONE DEAF!! (but I did miss the first half, have recorded to view later, due to commitment to new eps of the Simpsons!) I think Kate is a much better host than whatever her name was from last year (remember her saying hello to someone's dead mother?!)

Re Nick-Do any readers know what the premise of Mick Molloy's new
'The Nation' comedy show on Nine
is about. I don't see it being up against The Chaser anytime soon,
but it'd probably work better to trial it in an 11 pm timeslot.
I heard it was going to be a similar format to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart on the comedy channel. ie a bit of politics/topical news and a lot of adverts!!

Finished watching it takes two and all saints and crossing jordan and must say their were some surprises tonight on It Takes Two, but before i comment it seemed unfair for the people who were first in the show and those who performed as the show went along, so much for consistency. Krystal actually surprised me she can sing and i was massively surprised with all saints starlet Jolene Anderson i mean wow she was by far the best on the night. A good opener for the year but for some reason it was lacking something that DWTS has that makes me tune in week in week out, its like their is no oomph in the show it needs a good kick up or something it just lacks that oomph that DWTS has. Still will be tuning in next week

My objection to Jessica Rowe is that Sharyn Ghidella was overlooked for the position. Sharyn had been doing morning programs for as long as I can remember. She managed to see out Steve & Tracy, and countless morning news-variety lineups - eg. Sunrise when it was a news bulletin hosted by Chris Bath.

  • by canoli on May 09, 2007 at 08:03 AM

Looked forward to the return of It Takes Two, as I really enjoyed the previous series (no, I didn't watch DWTS). I have to agree with Guy, Jolene Anderson was absolutely amazing. She has a smile that can light up a room and her sassy and playful performance simply stole the show.
Jo Bailey was also quite good, though not in the same league as Jolene, performance wise. But she does almost match her in the smile department! :)
Ernie Dingo I thought had a great stage presence and presentation. His singing voice wasn't the best, but he should improve over time.
The other person I wish to comment on is Mimi McPherson ? or was it Elle? To me, she looked kind of unreal, like she was trying to morph into Elle and had a bit too much 'work' done. Good voice though, in a husky sort of a way, and an inspired song pick to open with.
My early tips for a winner would have to be Jolene Anderson (I'll never see her in the same way again in All Saints).

Hey TM
How does a Federal Budget speech rate these days? Any figures on past performance as well per chance?

Tribal Mind replies: Thanks for reminding me. See above.

Caught a little bit of ITT last night - what a load of garbage and Grant Denyer is a goose

Memo to all Amazing Race fans.

Ch7 has a two hour double episode scheduled for tomorrow.

So, if you are recording then take note.

  • by Craig on May 09, 2007 at 11:17 AM

Looks like Tuesday night is still DVD night! Nothing worth watching on FTA and Foxtel not much better.

I guess I could have watched the budget speech. At least it would have helped me sleep!

By the way, not sorry to see the end of Jessica Rowe. All that giggling really got to me.

  • by em on May 09, 2007 at 11:28 AM

Thanks for that amazing race update Craig.

They better show a new ep of Family Guy afterwards though.

  • by merciless on May 09, 2007 at 11:55 AM

I know its probably old news (I've been interstate) but I thought the Logies were as I predicted - self indulgent, boring and predictable. Hence why I created the Bogies!

The jokes were tired and crass, the award winners were there because of the three or four people who bothered to vote for them and it was all the same people doing the same thing - slapping themselves on the back - and for what.

I thought the highlight of last year's Awards was the performance of Joan Rivers - not exactly one of my favourite comedians but she said what most people think.

'What the hell is a logie and what the f..k am I doing here?'

As to more recent observations of Australian TV and nothing seems to have changed.

Big Brother appears to be boring the pants off us...again!

Jessica Rowe has finally been boned but where else would anyone get the sort of payout she did for such a woeful performance - I mean she was saddled with Banal Karl but the show just became ridiculous!

And Today Tonight and A Current Affair keep slagging each other off - there's not a week goes by where one isn't having a go at the other - they've run out of poor old grans to chain to nursing homes so instead of monitoring current affairs they monitor each other - how original!!

I am surprised Channel Nine is risking Mick Molloy again considering his previous efforts with the network. Anybody remember The Mick Molloy show?

Hey,
Any figures for Crossing Jordan last night, Thanks in advance

For the week of State of Origin their is some major programming changes is Sydney and Brisbane or NSW and QLD
Sydney and Brisbane: (Wednesday 23rd May)
7:30 Last Chance Learners
8:00 Police Files Unlocked
8:30 MOVIE Finding Neverland Premiere
10:45 24
Other states will have normal line-up with Heroes and Prison Break new episodes.
Sydney and Brisbane: (Thursday 24th May)
7:30 How I Met Your Mother
8:00 My Name is Earl
8:30 Heroes (New Night)
9:30 Lost (New Time)
10:30 Amazing Race (New Time)
11:30 Stargate Atlantis
Other states will have normal line-up of Lost at 8:30, Race at 9:30 and there will be a special double repeat episode of Family Guy at 10:30.
So since the Family Guy eps are repeat, the only thing any state will miss out on is that Sydney and Brisbane viewers will be 1 week behind other states. There is a plan to catch up.
If this line-up is a success in Syd and Brisbane, it may be permanent.
Also no word on if when Prison Break will be shown in Sydney and Brissie

Hey TM, can you please tell us the rating for Ten?s Late News with Sandra Sully vs. Nine's Nightline? I'm just curious who won between the both for the budget special.

Tribal Mind replies: Nightline got 463,000; Ten late news got 337,000.

  • by Signor Nick on May 09, 2007 at 02:41 PM

Hey Sit,
I know you are always gracious in giving me The Bill results without asking, but I was wandering what the figure of last night's show, up against new competition. The reason being, over the last couple of months while DWST was on, the show was down a third of its regular audience. This was probably due to a similar demographic audience between both shows. I have a slight feeling that if figures don't improve, the Bill might finds itself in new territory...timeslot, day, I dunno. ITV in England has lost patience despite good viewing figures, cutting the show from 2 episodes a week down to 1.
Thanks Sit
Daniel

Tribal MInd replies The Bill got 662,000, which doesn't sound encouraging. But I think the ABC is unlikely to behave like the commercial networks.

  • by Daniel on May 09, 2007 at 03:15 PM

Guy - Thanks for the info on 7. While i don't watch Heroes, seeing Lost moved back to 9.30 is interesting move on Thursday night. At least it will allow me to watch the tape of 24 from the previous night. I think Prison Break will just be held over during the SOO period. I think this is clever programming from 7.

  • by Garry S on May 09, 2007 at 04:18 PM

I am not the Cathy that blogged re movies instead of AFL - drat the popular name - now using a new handle!
Thanks to Beckala re the links for the greys eps last week - sent my thanks to you via another method but just in case the thank you did not get through.
Can someone explain if the SOO is on in couple of weeks why is it that House was repeated last week and both Cold Case & Without a Trace are listed as repeats this week? It is not a "non ratings week" is it, or perhaps it is a secret non ratings week - you know the one we have when we are not having one!
On another issue - TM given the success of the Bogies can it be an annual event? With categories and suggested nominees in the weeks before the Logies... Think some of the categories used this year should remain but there could be a couple of new ones that I am sure TM bloggers could come up with.
Thanks Guy re heads up on the 7 changes during SOO week - think I might go to the movies! Perhaps a preview of Pirates 3 on the Wednesday as I will not have the usual clashing of schedules.

Oh no, I've been watching The Bill for more years than I care to remember!! I've suffered through the soapie years with gritted teeth and even now with some of the story lines dragging on forever, I just can't stop watching...

'Berts Family Feud' being rested in June according to a press release on ebroadcast.com.au

REPLACE IT WITH 'GET SMART'!!!!!! i would watch it religiously if they did.

  • by William on May 10, 2007 at 12:06 AM

It Takes Two was boring. Sorry Grant, but it was obvious why you didn't win best presenter at the Logies. Although he tries...he's not funny.

And don't get me started on those 'judges'

  • by stephen on May 10, 2007 at 12:11 AM

RE: Heroes Move Update
A further update for you this move has been confirmed as a permanent movein the syd/brs market and in that family guy will be rested in these markets until The Amazing Race finishes up, news on prison break it will remain in its regular slot, however no word on what is replacing heroes on wednesday in this key timeslot for the seven network. If anymore info arises i will let you know

  • by Guy on May 10, 2007 at 01:59 AM

Any Neighbours ratings for this week? The promo they have been running was fantastic. Thanks.

Tribal Mind replies: 790,000.

I thought last night's ep of Medium (10) was the best of the entire series. Clever writing, intelligent acting from the two leads and nicely full-on intrigue until the final denouement. Can I ask TM where this show rates these days please? Thanks.

Editor replies: No information can be given at the moment because journalists at The Sydney Morning Herald are on strike over Fairfax company plans to cut 35 jobs of sub-editors and designers.

I just heard on the radio re Bert's show being "rested" ... perhaps he should do a 20 to 1 reasons why he should RETIRE NOW!!!
And if we needed any further evidence that Eddie has lost the plot completely, while in control of the remote (briefly) late last night, Channel Nine aired an Encore performance of The Lost Tribes. Why?
Spicks & Specks, Chaser great as usual. Loved the giant wool balls.

  • by Shoopie on May 10, 2007 at 07:24 AM

Great last episode of the Catherine "I ain't bothered" Tate Show, the disappointing part is it was such a short series, much like Little Britains third series.
Looks like a tight week in the ratings race, i think it will come down to the footy and Nine might just scrape through, unfortunately.
I've just noticed that Monday 7:30pm doesn't seem to have any decent rating programs for all but Ch.7, maybe Ch.9, ABC or SBS could put a decent show in there and that could drag down the boring Rich List...it will fade out as it is such a repetitive show.

  • by Ricardo on May 10, 2007 at 11:00 AM

"Berts Family Feud being rested in June according to a press release on ebroadcast.com.au"

William, word is it's being "rested" for good.

  • by Fielding on May 10, 2007 at 11:04 AM

Ok thats a fair strike, i will post the ratings here for the people who want to know
Seven won the night with 28.5%. Nine was second but only just with 24.3%, Ten was third with 24.0%, ABC fourth with 18.7, and 5th SBS with 4.6%.
Seven is also leading the week with 29.8%. Nine is now on 29.1%.

Tribal Mind comments: Thanks for the thought, Greysfan, but I wasn't here to publish your comment until now, because I was on strike.

  • by Greysfan on May 10, 2007 at 11:24 AM

Why anyone would watch any TV in Australia is beyond me. Every show from the US is behind, and everything made locally is crap - McLeods Daughter, BB, Dancing with the stars, in fact all reality shows. Why would you pay for foxtel when its either Sport (Puke) or reruns.
Personally I pay $60 a month for an ADSL2 internet connection, and download everything from the US. Most of the time I have a full episode downloaded in around 30 mins. I can then burn them to a CD and watch them in my DVD/DIVX player and on my plasma screen. At least they are the LATEST episodes, and not 3 or 4 months behind. I had the day off work sick yeasterday, and just spent the day watching whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted, with no adverts. If the comercial stations actually screened shows at the same time as they do in the US (Like Ten did with Jericho last year, but didn't bother to this year), then I would actually watch commercial TV.
I would like to thank all the Australian networks for showing me that I don't have to be their puppet

  • by Blondie on May 10, 2007 at 11:42 AM

I might be mistaken, but I think I just saw an ad for an upcoming Channel 9 reality show trying to find a wife for a lonely farmer. Is this actually happening? Or was I just hallucinating? (Please, please tell me I was hallucinating)
