The Tribal Mind: The last of the Silly Season

This blog is now history. To join the latest discussion of Australian attitudes, go to http://blogs.sunherald.com.au/whoweare.
Updated 10 am Friday February 2, 2007
The last episode ever of Will and Grace drew 1.155 million viewers in the mainland capitals. Otherwise, no interesting audience behaviour to report from Thursday, and this blog can move to a new address, where we'll publish the full week's ratings figures on Sunday.

On Wednesday night, Heroes was a huge hit. Just look at these figures: 1 HEROES Seven 2,109,000; 2 AIR CRASH INVESTIGATIONS Seven 1,584,000; 3 TODAY TONIGHT Seven 1,377,000; 4 SEVEN NEWS Seven 1,366,000; 5 HOME AND AWAY Seven 1,342,000; 6 PRISON BREAK - ON THE RUN Seven 1,226,000; 7 NINE NEWS Nine 1,099,000; 8 A CURRENT AFFAIR Nine 1,092,000; 9 ABC NEWS ABC 1,063,000; 10 TEMPTATION Nine 905,000 (OzTAM preliminary estimates, mainland capitals).

To compare this with our most watched programs of the 20th and 21st centuries, go to The shows Australia loved.

This column follows the rule that two sightings is a possibility and three sightings is a trend, which means we can't yet say with confidence that there's a trend towards watching game shows in prime time this year. But given the audience of 1.96 million for the first night of Nine's 1 vs 100 on Monday, and the audience of 1.56 million for the second night of Seven's The Rich List on Tuesday, we'll be watching closely next week to see if Ten's The Con Test can pull enough punters to be more than coincidence.

On Monday we asked you to draft a press release demonstrating how Eddie McGuire would announce the boning of Eddie McGuire either as CEO of Nine or as host of 1 vs 100. These were the finalists ...

"From: Channel 9.
To: AAP
Re: Ed/1 vs 100
Career? Dead
Best Regards, Channel 9 Press Relations". (Galen)

"As CEO of Australia's number one show-shuffling channel, I have realised some boardroom shuffling is in order. The Apprentice will feature me being boned three separate times. The first will highlight retirement homes for boned execs, then AFL coaches will audition to replace me and finally Trump tells me what he really thinks of Rosie." (Cat)

"I would like to announce my resignation effective today from Channel 9. I intend to focus more on my boxing career. Jana Wendt will be taking over all my duties. Cheers. Mcguire." (Mokhles K Sidden). But our popular culture correspondent, David Dale, has decided to award the prize (a copy of Who We Are -- A snapshot of Australia today) to Louise, for this press release from the CEO of Channel Nine:

"It is with regret that I announce that 1 vs 100 has been cancelled, despite having great ratings early, before viewers realised it was not an extended version of 20 to 1. It will be replaced with 100 to 1 - an extended version of 20 to 1, with Bert Newton hosting."

We were going to award second prize to Trudes, for an entry which begins "Cannot for the life of me understand why everyone on this blog hates Channel Nine - it must be the tall poppy syndrome!" But we had a sudden thought that Trudes might be serious. You be the judge, in the comments below.

Apparently the old master has still got it -- at least when he's up against no serious competition. There were concerns that Eddie McGuire might have become a turn-off factor in the year since he gave up Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, but last night two million Australians in the mainland capitals were curious enough to sit through his return as host of 1 vs 100. That audience might slip a bit next week when Eddie comes up against a new episode of Desperate Housewives, but Nine's new game show clearly has more potential than Seven's needlessly complicated The Rich List, hosted by Andrew O'Keefe.

We'd welcome your predictions on the average audience 1 vs 100 will achieve over the next few weeks (bearing in mind Millionaire drew 1.2 million in its dying days).

Updated 10 am Monday January 29
Sunday's tennis entered the record books, with 2.4 million Australians in the mainland capitals locked onto another Federer triumph. So much for the theory that we only watch sport when Australians are involved.

The TV "non-ratings period" was supposed to drag on for another two weeks but because this is such a competitive year, the networks have decided to bring out their big guns early. Tonight Channel Nine is prematurely ejaculating an expensive new game show called 1 vs 100, which will test if Eddie McGuire has jumped the shark. From next week, he's up against new episodes of Desperate Housewives -- just like the old days when he hosted Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.

Faster Eddie 2007 may not have quite the same appeal to the traditional fan base of viewers over 50. Some of them have died since he was last on air. Others may have been offended by allegations about his language.
With the tennis out of the way, Seven leaps off this week with the new sci-fi drama Heroes (a mix of The Incredibles, Lost and The 4400), a new season of 24 and a new game show called The Rich List, which will test whether Andrew O'Keefe has jumped the shark. Ten has new seasons of Medium and Law and Order: SVU.

To glimpse some of the new shows and new seasons, go to tv.peekvid.com (warning: there be spoilers).

For your consideration: 1. Could Bindi Irwin's 15 minutes of fame be over already? Below you will find ratings data that suggests Australians prefer tennis and even ABC current affairs to Bindi. Channel Ten seems to have misjudged the public mood in putting David Letterman's Late Show on at 7.30 last Thursday to let families see yet another performance by the daughter of a dead icon. It drew only 722,000 viewers in the mainland capitals.

At the cinema, one thing is perfectly clear: Australians have not forgiven Mel Gibson for his drunken outrages of 2006. Or else they're not attracted to ultra-violent movies performed in the Mayan language. The first week's takings for Apocalypto (see below) were worse than disappointing. When it opened in the USA, it topped the box office, while here it could only reach number seven, suggesting that the Yanks are more forgetful than we are.

What Australians preferred at the flicks last week was The Pursuit of Happyness, a sentimental tale of good triumphing over adversity. Perhaps we simply love Will Smith, penguins, Ben Stiller, James Bond, Cameron Diaz and Leonardo DiCaprio even more than Our Mel. To discuss Australia's cultural cringe, go to the Who We Are column.

Tuesday's telly
Australians would rather see Arnold Schwarzenegger slaughtering people than Arnold Schwarzenegger giving awards to people. And they would rather see an Australian tennis player snatching victory from the jaws of defeat than Australian actors, directors and animators being snubbed by Hollywood. And they would rather see how Australian writers resolve a soap opera cliffhanger than any of the above.

Those insights into the tastes of this nation (references: Eraser, Golden Globes, Lleyton Hewitt, Golden Globes, Home and Away) can be gleaned by reading these ratings ...

Last week: Just when you thought Australians weren't watching much television, because they are at the beach or in the cinema or on the booze, along comes an insignificant cricket match and creates a viewing record. Channel Nine's afterthought to The Ashes, the Twenty/20 one day game, averaged 2.4 million viewers on Tuesday. Then on Friday, the evening session of a one day match, involving most of the same players doing most of the same things, drew 1.8 million.

They can't have all been Poms hoping for a recovery because OzTAM doesn't measure audiences in pubs and motels.

COMMENTS

I guess most of the train-wreck reality shows will remain in the schedules after silly season. Life Begins looks promising. How Did We Get Here has a 20-to-1 sort of appeal.
TM - I have been wondering lately why (Ch9 especially) seems to be showing a lot more NZ product? Any ideas?

Tribal Mind replies: Go to the second story at www.smh.com.au/tribalmind for this very question.

  • by cronk on January 08, 2007 at 10:49 AM

I don't think Cops will continue past Janurary, but it may come back later in the year, its ratings so far are better than TBL (US) ever was in the same slot.

  • by ttnow on January 08, 2007 at 12:30 PM

I think Border Patrol NZ may stick around along with Airline/Airport or a local version of...
I have really been enjoying Men In Trees over the silly season. Loving Anne Heche.

  • by Jane B on January 08, 2007 at 03:37 PM

Is David Letterman drawing a larger audience at the earlier time on Ten?

Tribal Mind replies: Yes - 238,000.

  • by drb123 on January 09, 2007 at 11:48 AM

hey TM, when will the blog start happening again on a regular basis?

Tribal Mind replies: When I go back to work on February 13, apparently.

  • by cronk on January 09, 2007 at 12:19 PM

When is DR Phil going to start on channel 10? The show is still on 9 as repeats.

Tribal Mind replies: Why don't you contact Ten's programming dept and ask? If you get an answer, let us all know.

  • by John on January 09, 2007 at 05:11 PM

TM - If you are back to work on Feb 13... is that when the ratings season "officially starts"?
hope you've had a nice break :)

Tribal Mind replies: No, Feb 4.

  • by kate on January 09, 2007 at 05:43 PM

did anyone notice network 10s highest placed programe was at 24. some crappy american daqnce show
not even the law and order franchise can top it !!!!

  • by Don on January 09, 2007 at 06:47 PM

Hey TM.
How did the Survivor Cook Islands finale rate on Friday night?
Thanks, Michael. :).

Tribal Mind replies: Don't have that info yet. Obviously less than 750,000.

  • by Michael on January 09, 2007 at 08:27 PM

Where can we get the figures for the twenty20 game last night? Given the test figures, I'd be interested to compare the two.
By the by, still no Gilmore Girls...

Tribal Mind replies: The best way to get the figures for 20/20 last night would be to go to www.smh.com.au/tribalmind, click on the top item, and scroll down to the comment posted by AJ, where the answer is given as 2,372,000 in the mainland capitals. Re Gilmore Girls, you may have to do what I have done -- buy the DVD box set. There is no reason to place any hopes in Channel Nine.

  • by AJ on January 10, 2007 at 09:56 AM

"There is no reason to place any hopes in Channel Nine." posted by TM.
Like there ever was....
Ch9 will be in trouble this year, as 7 of their US import shows have already been boned in the states.
Wonder if Life Begins lost 200K viewers to the cricket and dave Hughes. Would be a shame to see this show lose its audience so fast, it's good stuff.

  • by cronk on January 10, 2007 at 10:56 AM

Hi TM - this is a little bit off topic but I was wondering if you knew if any Australian network (Pay or FTA) will show the SuperBowl this year? And if so, when it will be telecast (Sydney time)?
Fox Sport has been showing heaps of NFL lately (the playoffs I think) and I always like to watch the SuperBowl. SuperBowl will be played in Florida on Sunday 4th Feb. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

  • by Joe on January 10, 2007 at 11:07 AM

Im not a channel 9 fan at all - but i really love the concept of 20/20 cricket - congrats 9 on a great concept.

Any idea whether Sara O'Hare manages to raise the ratings for Nine's morning show ??

Tribal Mind replies: She has not. 'Today' is further behind 'Sunrise' than it was over this period a year ago. But it may not be her fault.

  • by stephen on January 10, 2007 at 11:56 AM

Leila McKinnon is much better than Tracey Grimshaw, though.

  • by cronk on January 10, 2007 at 12:35 PM

Does anyone know what happened to Beauty and the Geek? It just disappeared last week and some top 40 celebrity countdown was on. This show cracks me up, too many classic moments in this show to mention. There was only 2 eps left =(

And on another note why can't Ch9 just show the rest of Third Watch, theres only a handful of episodes left when they took it off air last week... Grrrrr

  • by confused on January 10, 2007 at 01:11 PM

SUPERBOWL 07 The superbowl will be shown on SBS on Monday Feb 5, the coverage usually starts around 10.00 am. I think Fox Sports on foxtel same time.

  • by shelly on January 10, 2007 at 01:29 PM

Channel 10 a thank you for showing Letterman a bit of an earlier time, please keep it at this regualar time.

Watched Charmed and was enjoying the ep until when it ended and was informed that it will return later this year! Thanks for nothing, why why. Yes it has now finished but why not keep showing it until is finished (so much for the ratings not meaning anything in summer)

Until nine either decides to show Gilmore Girls or foxtel is able to broker a deal, I just have to go to the net and read (not the same as watching) what is happening.

Cool website thewb.warnerbros.com for all Gilmor, smallvile, one tree hill news.

RE: Superbowl Posted by: Joe at January 10, 2007 11:07 AM

I'm pretty sure SBS airs the Superbowl sometime in Ferbruary, very soon after it's played in the US, a day or two later maybe. If FOX Sports has been airing NFL then I'm fairly sure they'd have the rights to the Superbowl.

  • by Jay on January 10, 2007 at 02:03 PM

Posted by: Joe at January 10, 2007 11:07 AM

SBS usually shows that once live and once delayed during prime time same day.

Unless Fox Sports has stolen the Superbowl off them as well!

  • by Earthquake on January 10, 2007 at 02:32 PM

Hey
The official ratings season starts Sunday Feb 11th and NOT Feb 4th as you have suggested.

Tribal Mind replies: Ah, that explains why I'm starting back on Feb 13. Unless the season starts on Jan 28.

  • by Aaron on January 10, 2007 at 02:53 PM

Joe (11.07am), SBS usually shows the Superbowl. Their website http://www20.sbs.com.au/sport/ says they will be showing it free-to-air again this year.

  • by Wendell on January 10, 2007 at 04:55 PM

For those fans of Gilmore Girls season 5 is available here on DVD to hire or buy and season 6 will be available to hire or buy on 7 February
And for Charmed season 8 it will be available from 15 February
No having to wait for Channel 10 to show the final 17 episodes "later in the Year"!

Tribal Mind replies: Season 6 of Gilmore Girls is available from Amazon in America, but it's disappointing. The writing has deteriorated, and I'm wondering if Lorelai and Rory have jumped the shark.

  • by Cathy on January 10, 2007 at 05:14 PM

I know there are ALOT of Entourage fans out there, it looks like Nine might show it somewhere, sometime, this year.

Tribal Mind,
I can't believe you watch the 'Gilmore Girls'. I would rather 'jam a fork into my head' ala Elaine on Seinfeld.
cheers.

Tribal Mind replies: Fortunately, you won't have to take such drastic action, since Nine persists in not showing it.

  • by adam on January 10, 2007 at 11:59 PM

welcome back! happy 2007.
I hope they change the timeslot for "Men In Trees"......great show...but too late for sleepy heads like myself!

  • by lily on January 11, 2007 at 08:57 AM

A NYE resolution for 2007 was to NOT watch any new programs which are on channel 9.
Nine is too unreliable and disappoints too often.
I was however enjoying the very last season of Third Watch on Tuesday nights, followed by Weeds.
Rather funny as I haven't watched FTA on a Tuesday night for a couple of years, and suddenly there's two good full hours in primetime!
So Weeds has finished its run, but where is Third Watch?
Cricket this week, OK, sad but understandable.
Checked the guide for next week though, and there's some crappy old movie instead.
My original plan for channel nine stands.
Anything that sounds good I'll be getting via DVD if available, otherwise it's channel BT for me.
Rot in hell, ch 9.

"Wonder if Life Begins lost 200K viewers to the cricket and dave Hughes. Would be a shame to see this show lose its audience so fast, it's good stuff." posted by: cronk at January 10, 2007 10:56

I agree, Life Begins is great show & well written. Does anyone know how many episodes were made and if it is still in production in the UK.
And Adam, regarding Gilmore Girls, life would be terribly boring if we all liked the same shows.....TM is just showing the usual great taste in the barren wasteland that is FTA TV.

  • by AJ on January 11, 2007 at 09:37 AM

Seems my post from Monday got lost within fairfax pipes. Trying again.
Off topic but my highlight for summer on the box thus far Boxing day Test, camera slowing pans around MCG crowd, cuts back to field action, cuts back Howard & wife in members box. The crowd catches Mr & Mrs Senior on the big MCG screen and start booing... commentary team speechless, director very quickly cuts to field... And I caught the whole performance on disk whilst trying out my new Christmas recording toy.
Happy 2007 Mr TM.

  • by paora on January 11, 2007 at 09:52 AM

Hey, Life Begins went for 3 seasons in the UK. Unfortunately it is no longer in production. Hope this helps!

  • by Reid on January 11, 2007 at 10:59 AM

Paora - You have to post that clip up on youtube or something. I missed that and it sounds like gold!

Tribal Mind replies: What a good idea. How about emailing it as a clip to onlinestaff@smh.com.au and they might be able to load it on this site?

  • by no way on January 11, 2007 at 11:19 AM

I know it's the silly season, but just how much trash are we expected to put up with? I briefly saw Cheaters on 7 last night - how low can a TV show get?
Then I switched over to 9 and it was that dire NZ soapy crap fest.
Then it was off to 10 and they had Celebrity Joker Poker - sponsored by Jack Daniels. How classy.
Had to laugh - FTA is just sleazy trash.

  • by cronk on January 11, 2007 at 11:51 AM

Glad to hear that Life Begins lasted 3 seasons. I look forward to seeing the other two. Tuesday night was the last ep here for now . The announcement at the end said it will be back in later in 07. Does that mean next summer?
Still at least one decent program amongst all the rubbish.
The only decent show 9 is showing at the moment is Men In Trees. I just read on the net that the network in the US have renewed another season. 9 should be it earlier though.
To those Grey's Anatomy fans out there, I have been watching downloaded new episodes and the new season is really fantastic. And so is the new season of Stargate SG1 too!

  • by tess on January 11, 2007 at 02:44 PM

Regarding The Gilmore Girls, they are good sorts and everything, but i always had trouble believing one was the mother. Did she have her child when she was five years old or something.

Tribal Mind replies: Lorelai had Rory when she was 16. That's the major plot point, because she was disowned by her parents. Now the mother is 35, the daughter is 19, and the grandparents want to turn the grandchild into the respectable girl they never had.

  • by Rob on January 12, 2007 at 11:40 AM

And again Nein lets us down. If only they would show Gilmore Girls, then Adam could jam a fork into his head, and we'd all have something more interesting than the nth rerun of Seinfeld to watch!
TM - totally agree about Gilmore Girls S6. The shark and the jumping...so much potential at the end of S5...so many wasted opportunities. It almost as though John Wells got hold of it.

How did the Amazing race final rate last night?

Tribal Mind replies: 1.09 million in the mainland capitals.

  • by Anonymous on January 12, 2007 at 01:32 PM

Hating over summer
1:The "staggering" of certain TV stations to deliberately start a program at times like 8:35 or 8:45 - not always just in summer either!
2: Ad mid-way through SBS programs. Used to be just between programs.
3: Naomi Robson has gone from Today Tonight! Yes, I may be one of the few who would admit to liking her. Her current replacement is not very good. Can't wait for her to appear on dancing with the stars!
4: So much crap on that it's sunch an easy choice to load up a DVD!
5: Apparent TV ad synching by the commerical networks. Just channel surf and you get - you guessed it! An ad on every channel! At the same time.
6: Apparent volume, sorry, volume density, changes during commercials. Nearly worn out the mute button.
7: The sickening knowledge that these shows will probably come back: Big brother, Any sort of survivor, Great Race, DIY Home improvement shows
Prinbcess / Bachelor / elimination & match shows, Medical / Legal dramas...
Loving over summer:
1: Ann Heche's cute smile in "Men in Trees" - especially when she's doing the radio show!
2: Drawn Together - a nooooce, sick little show!
3: Life Begins Refreshing.
4: A big DVD collection!

  • by Dave on January 12, 2007 at 04:56 PM

Yes totally agree with Sal (Jan 11), what happened to third watch, i've been waiting ages for the last handful of eps to show. Anyone know what happened to Beauty and the Geek? Only had 2 more eps to run and then it disappears from ch7...did i mention Alias? *sigh*

how did The OC rate this week, did it to better then the 509,000 it reveiced on boxing day?????????

  • by Shez on January 13, 2007 at 03:48 PM

How did Smallville rate last night?

Tribal Mind replies: Why do you remain anonymous for a question like that? Are you ashamed of being a Smallville fan? Answer: episode 1 593,000. Ep 2: 591,000.

  • by Anonymous on January 13, 2007 at 04:10 PM

Not being an FTA fan anymore(since I got Foxtel 4 months ago I may have watched perhaps 1 hour total), I have a gut feeling that if 10 dont have any programs in the program in the top 10 soon they are not going to recover from the summer programming.

  • by david on January 14, 2007 at 01:47 AM

when does the rating year officially begin
and is there any news on when new shows like ugly betty and heroes are starting?

Tribal Mind replies: Offically Feb 11, but I think the networks will kick off in the previous week. Theory: Seven will rush in with Despos and Lost, but wait a couple of weeks for the newies.

  • by brendon on January 14, 2007 at 09:40 AM

I read somewhere that Ugly Betty was starting on 29 Jan.

Tribal Mind asks: The only reference I can find to tennis in the ratings for yesterday was "Talking Tennis" with 148,000.

  • by Geoff on January 15, 2007 at 11:45 AM

Haha, surely "The Boatique" only got those figures because it was scheduled between the two innings of the one-dayer. Can't imagine a yawn-fest fishing show would rate otherwise!
Also, good stuff on Ch9 last night with Waking The Dead. Hope there's more of that to come.

  • by cronk on January 15, 2007 at 11:51 AM

Weird move on part of Ch7 last night, they ran a promo & behind the scenes of the new shows to begin in 07 and the upcoming season shows like Grey's and Lost... it was not advertised (at least in my Tv Guides) and I only came upon it by chance... It was also quite late at night about 10.30pm-ish... Was it a late program change to make up a programming gap??? I would have thought that they would schedule it earlier in prime-time on a Monday night... just my thoughts... they should be really promoting the beejeebees of the new shows which will probably kick Ch9's butt this year...

  • by kate on January 15, 2007 at 12:16 PM

@ kate
They also showed the promo at about 3pm in the afternoon. Their returning series look good, but they really need to revamp the Desperate Housewives promo - the series is much, much better than the lame promo would have you believe.
The "What's On in 07" promo is similar to what they do on US tv - a "coming season" guide, usually airs in the autumn over there. Good move by 7, if you ask me.

  • by cronk on January 15, 2007 at 01:15 PM

Channel 7 traditionally "promotes the beejeebees" of their new shows right through their telecast of the Australian Open, ad nauseum, over and over, and get the tennis commentators to tell us how great the new shows will be. That's why mute buttons were invented.

  • by JB on January 15, 2007 at 03:03 PM

Yay for the return of Top Gear, which I only accidentally realised was returning tonight due to a banner ad here on the SMH website. Will be interesting to see the ratings post Hamster the Cannonball.
A question: Has Ch Nein shown the finale of The Apprentice yet? I caught the first episode of the final task by complete accident on Boxing Night and can't find trace of when the finale' was on. And yes, I know who won.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on January 15, 2007 at 03:18 PM

kate - i think the CH7 promo for it's new shows was also screened during the day, while the tennis was on.
I remember seeing it in the Tv guide.

  • by Simon on January 15, 2007 at 03:32 PM

Thanks to cronk; JB and Simon for asking my questions... Yes I thought the promo for DHs was a little lame but I guess any more promo would be for DH might be classed as "spoilers" (for non-web surfers)... Grey's & Ugly Betty were reasonably done... Watched DVD of Weeds S1 on weekend... really good second time round, especially without huge number of ads channel 9 threw in when it aired

  • by kate on January 15, 2007 at 04:35 PM

Australia are something like 2 seasons behind the UK, so the Hamster will indeed be appearing in this week's episode of Top Gear.

I was sad to discover that That 70s Show has gone now that Home and Away is back on. I'm actually amazed that Ch7 didn't pull it like last year, I've been cynically waiting to see what they did with it. Although if it got more than 1 million viewers on Thursday night they might even consider keeping it on.

  • by Karen on January 15, 2007 at 04:50 PM

Bereft Skerrick, the rest of the Apprentice was shown later that week - I think on the Friday. We had to scan the TV guide to track it down and then tape it but we managed.

  • by Jane B on January 15, 2007 at 06:04 PM

I too was upset at the demise of that 70s show once again. But, the even more pressing issue, is channel 7 once again continuing to screw over fans of Will and Grace - showing the second last episode on Thursday, and then the finale won't be on for another three weeks. I understand that they have to show the tennis, but surely they could have started showing an hour of it a few weeks prior, instead of that ridiculously unfunny show that followed it (the name escapes me, something about some idiot who worked for an airline or something), so that we once again wouldn't have this huge gap. They wonder why it doesn't get more viewers! I haven't had much to complain about with channel 7, but this really annoyed me, we've been waiting for a good year and a half for this.

  • by beckala on January 15, 2007 at 09:06 PM

Worst summer TV ever. The only thing I've been watching on telly has been The West Wing and the final eps of Will and Grace. Everything else has been rubbish so the rest of my time has been spent flicking through Foxtel.

  • by Fish on January 16, 2007 at 10:21 AM

Interesting to see that Channel Ten finally showed a proper elimination of So You Think You Can Dance. You would think that being its highest rating show ( and in saying that, has fallen under the million mark) that they would atleast show a proper show. Nothing more annoying than getting into the show, making an assumption who deserves to go and after the millionth commercial break get straight into the bottom three. Knowing that the next episode is a two hour show and Ten has it showing as 2 hours, no prizes for guessing that the really professional editing guys are going to cut the elimination....yet again!

  • by rt on January 16, 2007 at 11:15 AM

The second ep of The West Wing was brilliant last night. What great scripting and acting - why doesn't this show rate better - is it too intelligent??

  • by Jane B on January 16, 2007 at 11:37 AM

Just thought I'd update people on last night's ratings.
7 dominated the night winning every timeslot. Seven News (1.407 million) was up 11% on Nine News (1.272 million), Today Tonight (1.545 million) was the most-watched programme on television on Monday and up an astonishing 40% on A Current Affair (1.105 million). Home & Away roared back into action, gaining many viewers due to Sally's gripping storyline. The show had a peak audience of 1.75million, while an average audience of 1.531 million viewers (nearly doubling King of Queens on Nine). Home and Away also more than doubled Neighbours (0.631 million). In breakfast television, Early Sunrise was up 63% on Early Today and Sunrise nearly doubles Today:

0600-0700 0700-0900
Sunrise 197,000 403,000
Today 121,000 203,000

PS. SIT Would you have any figures for The Bill. Just curious to see how it's doing in Silly Season. Thanks Daniel

  • by Daniel on January 16, 2007 at 12:41 PM

Totally agree about West Wing. it's brilliant. Probably right, Jane B, too intellectual for mass consumers.

While I am at it, what is with TT, ACA and What's Good For You? Almost every episode has a feature on what bra women should wear, or basically any subject that allows them to show gratuitous breast shots. Do they really think we are that stupid not to realise that this is just cheap voyeurism for sad individuals?

I agree Jane, 2nd ep of TWW was great...did you catch the show Jack and Bobby afterwards? Really interesting concept...with the Doogie Howser guy talking to camera from the future in 2033 (as president) about his past (2006).

rt wrote: "Interesting to see that Channel Ten finally showed a proper elimination of So You Think You Can Dance......." Each to their own, I like the truncated version, I find the elongated elminations painful... I guess some people like the suspense (?) but making the contestants squirm isn't really my thing... I've been watching some of the American Idol weekend shows and it is great not to see the drawn out & padded elimination rounds... as said, each to their own.

  • by kate on January 16, 2007 at 03:29 PM

On the subject of TWW (agree it is returning to its early form) does anybody know what the ABC plan to do with it when 4 Corners returns? I am hoping it is just moved back to Thursday night still in 2 episode blocks.

Tribal Mind asks: Yes, yes, this is all very interesting, but doesn't anybody want to discuss Apocalypto and the current range of cinema opportunities? Don't any readers leave their homes for entertainment at this time of year?

  • by Cat on January 16, 2007 at 03:36 PM

Dear TM - yes some people do leave their homes just to avoid the 65th repeats of CSI or the Simpsons.

In looking at the list of top 10 movies for last weekend: I did see the Pursuit of Happyness on the weekend - and I enjoyed it.

I do not think I will see Apocalypto as I hear it is violent and the topic does not sell me.

I have already seen 6 of the top 10 and intend to see The Queen this week. Babel is also on the list of movies to see.

Last year I saw 50 movies (mainly mainstream),and this time last year I think from memory I had already seen 8 movies.

There does not seem to be as much quality on offer this time of year as there was last, except for the kids - Loved both Flushed Away & Night at the Museum - Happy Feet good but patchy.

Think Mel may have "jumped the shark" with the Passion of the Christ... needs another Braveheart type role to lure me back to his films, I know it was violent but it also was interesting.

  • by Cathy on January 16, 2007 at 05:00 PM

TM, TM, TM....When I go out to the cinema I don't want to see blood, gore and another overrated, under-achieving, testosterone overloaded tribal soap opera with subtitles. And I think the rest of the cinema-going public agree - the only thing that will boost it's box office figures will be a denouncement by Fred Nile (ala Caligula) - other than that, Mel's latest is for the cinema scrap heap.
It's good to note from the Golden Globes that Helen Mirren won two - both for portrayals of the Queen (Liz I & II) - it's these kind of performances that drag in the lazy stay-at-homers like me...

  • by AJ on January 16, 2007 at 05:03 PM

TM I do leave my home for entertainment - just not on Monday nights. As to Apocalypto if I wanted to watch the end of an empire I would simply watch the SBS World News not Mel's version.

  • by Cat on January 16, 2007 at 05:34 PM

Yes the Apocalypto film flopping in Aus in it's opening weekend is surprising (but in some ways it's not, which I'll get to), but I'm surprised (since the Australian office of Mel's own Icon Films company is distributing it here) at what a highly abysmal, fairly arrogant job Icon have done promoting and marketing it. They basically just dumped the film in cinemas and did nothing, so that whoever currently heads Icon in Australia, should be fired. I can understand Mel wanting to currently keep a low profile, but he really should've travelled extensively overseas with the Apoca film's lead actor Rudy Youngblood (who's American, but looks South American) appearing at numerous overseas premieres (including coming to Australia to do media interviews), doing press and taking the heat for what happened last year, as it could've been spun positively.

  • by CSquires on January 16, 2007 at 09:24 PM

Ten are apparently (and sensibly) showing The David Letterman Show on Thursday at 7.30 pm, to cash
in on little Bindi and mother Terry Irwin being on it, which Nine would never have done, when they screened the show (they would've just shown a couple minutes of it on the ACA show).

  • by GBaxter on January 16, 2007 at 09:38 PM

Could channel 10 please please please replace the horrid Summerland with Ellen again!!! Please, surely we don't need to see this trite crap again!! At least 7th Heaven was a premiere (although not exactly quality programming), this is a repeat of a horrifically crappy program that Australia has already rejected!!
PS TM, I am not likely to see Mel Gibson's latest. I'm not a fan. However, I am planning this weekend to go and see The Pursuit of Happyness (despite the incorrect spelling irritating me, as an English teacher!!), but have heard too many dodgy reviews of Happy Feet (from friends, not actual reviewers) to decide to wait until the dvd!
Also, found the win of Sacha Baron Cohen (apologies if I spell his name wrong!) absolutely fascinating, best moment of the night at the Golden Globe Awards, and funniest speech ever! Such a shame the US censors decided to put the music on less than a minute in, when they let pretty much every other nominee go on for a good two minutes!

  • by beckala on January 16, 2007 at 11:48 PM

Don't blame 10 for cashing in, Terri Irwin and 'dye job' Stainton are doing a good job of cashing in themselves.

  • by jed on January 17, 2007 at 01:24 AM

Yes TM obviously people are going to the movies. Look at the box office of Happy Feet. I did see this with the kids aged 4 and 6. They enjoyed it but the message probably went over their head. The dancing was awesome and Robin Williams was fantastic. Saw Flushed Away yested with same said kids and that was much more their level of humour. The singing slugs was the highlight for me but overall a very funny movie - why is this not doing as well as Happy Feet? There were also a lot of teenagers in the screening yesterday.

  • by Jane B on January 17, 2007 at 09:10 AM

I go to the movies most weeks and have seen 4 of the ten listed, (and going to see Happy Feet this weekend). The new Mel Gibson flick really doesn't interest me - it's not so much Mel - as the film subject - that's keeping me away.. Would be interested to hear what others thought of Babel though...

  • by Danna on January 17, 2007 at 09:13 AM

TM, i would go to the flicks more often if the cinemas made it more affordable. Even if its just me and my son, it costs close to 40 dollars to see a movie once you include the overpriced snacks. Is it any wonder people turn to bittorent.I know it's usually cheaper on a Tuesday but i don't want to go anywhere during the week.

  • by Rob on January 17, 2007 at 09:46 AM

'Dangerous' on Foxtel last night was quite good. It really had me hooked straight away and kept me interested for the whole hour and anxious to find out what happens in the next episode. I must admit that the coarse language and adult themes were a bit full-on sometimes but it made the show totally realistic and was something necessary to the story. I was quite impressed by the performances of Khan Chittendon and Brooke Satchwell. It had a fresh new drama style too. Why can't the commercial networks make new shows like 'Dangerous'?

  • by J Bar on January 17, 2007 at 10:28 AM

Rob - You need to look at the non "chain" cinemas where tickets are a reasonable price. Places like the Ritz at Randwick have full adult tickets for $9 - so tickets are affordable - also joining the AFI will help as it gives you discounts at every cinema - I get cheaper tickets at the Ritz. You should note I cross the Harbour to go to the Ritz because they show many films and the cost is reasonable - plus they have quite good choc tops - more than just vanilla - on that note the best choc tops are either Dendy Quays or Norton Street - both have variety and great non icy ice cream.

Tribal Mind replies: Would readers care to offer advice on which cinemas serve the best icecreams? I had a tiramisu gelato in the Academy Twin, Paddington the other day.

When Aus viewers attempt going to a US TV network's official website to watch eps of their favourite US TV shows (that most offer online), they can't access them because the sites have IP address blocks on them, that shut you out if you live outside North America.
But regular readers of this blog can watch (without having, or knowing how to use Bit Torrent) commercial free eps of Ugly Betty, Heroes, Dexter, seasons 3 of Veronica Mars / Batt Galactica / Lost (only 6 eps have aired so far as it's been on a 2 month break) / House, seasons 2 of Weeds / Prison Break / Supernatural, seasons 6 of Smallville and 24, on this great site:

http://tv.peekvid.com/

Tribal Mind comments: Thanks CSquires. I just watched the first episode of Lost season three by this method, and it was wonderful. I commend it to readers.

Jane B - agree, I thought that Flushed Away was simply brilliant. One of the funniest kids films I;ve seen........singing slugs and then the piece de resistance, the french mime interpreter! A slice of genius.....why didn't it get any nominations?
I saw Cars (best animated golden globe) and it annoyed the stuffing out of me.....that one really was for kids.....

  • by Chelley on January 17, 2007 at 11:12 AM

Golden Globes last night was utterly boring. Only Borat's (forgot actor's name) speech was worth listening to.
Oh well. At least NCIS is finally going to be back on. And at an 8:30 timeslot as well.

  • by MissUnderstood on January 17, 2007 at 11:12 AM

Re Bindi comments....
I was watching the biography channel on foxtel last night..which has "the insider" "inside edition" etc, which are entertainment shows and all had been interviewing Bindi.
I think she should have taken at least some time out of the spotlight.

  • by LoveMyMcDreamy on January 17, 2007 at 11:22 AM

Why is that 100,000 more people in Melbourne watch TEN NEWS AT FIVE, than any other state capital?
Oh,..... I get it.....Helen Kapalos.

  • by Peter B. on January 17, 2007 at 12:34 PM

Thanks for the info Cathy but i forgot to mention i live in Maitland near Newcastle. Not much choice i'm afraid.

  • by Rob on January 17, 2007 at 12:48 PM

People don't watch the Golden Globes because
a) the awards are pretty irrelevant to begin with. I mean, voted for by media. Whoopdedoo.
b) Awards ceremonies are boring
c) Anyone who was interested in the first place will have already seen the results on the internet

  • by DragonLass on January 17, 2007 at 02:51 PM

Letterman with the Irwins at 7.30pm on Thursday -- I expect C10 to be doing this more often, a lot of celeb exclusives appear on Letterman ie. Michael Richards apology. Beats any celeb appearance on Today Tonight and ACA.

PS: New (up to date) Top Gear epsiodes returns to the BBC late this month. See finalgear.com

Hey TM,
Hope you had a nice break! Can u tell me what the ratings were for Supernatural on Monday 15th?
Thanks.

Tribal Mind replies: I'm still on my break until Feb 13, so I am not answering such questions.
The answer is 1.04 million, but don't tell anyone I told you, or Fairfax will expect all its slaves to work on their holidays.

  • by Susie D on January 17, 2007 at 05:01 PM

thanks for the peekvid link , looks good , but I peeked at an episode of Prison Break and whilst spoken in English , had French subtitles , any way to overcome this , incidenatlly I'm up to S02E31 so the site is also behind bittorrent...

  • by jane doe on January 17, 2007 at 08:08 PM

Great result for Supernatural - 1.04 million. Sad episode to see Daddy Winchester die..Jeffrey Dean Morgan can't cut a break. He was dead in Weeds, died in Grey's, and now he's gone from Supernatural. Stil, a great show.

Tribal Mind replies: Death doesn't seem to be final in that show. He'll probably be back.

  • by Lisa on January 17, 2007 at 08:31 PM

Thanks CSquires - the site is fabulous while it lasts (also loved the Cyberman Call Centre under the Dr Who list - "your call is important to us") but I am sure the networks will find ISPs willing to block it.
TM - Did you note the position of the plane in the sky as it broke up? (Lost fans will not be shocked to know flashbacks feature in the first episode back) You may be trying to remember a couple of episodes in.

Tribal Mind replies: It seemed in a different spot from where it had been in earlier eps -- more over the island than over the sea.

  • by Cat on January 17, 2007 at 10:06 PM

Cat, I agree that it is fabulous while it lasts. I already noticed that several Grey's Anatomy episodes have been taken off. But i'm happy enough to work my way through the new season of Scrubs, and Lost too - first ten minutes of the first episode were fantastic! But would like them to move to the other unresolved plot lines! (there, that was sufficiently vague to not upset those who haven't seen it!!). SO a big thank you to CSquires, as I would never have found this, and am just not technolically savvy enough to figure out downloads!

  • by Beckala on January 18, 2007 at 09:11 AM

TM - remember that and where the people who were watching it were standing and the big revelation a few episodes further in will gain a traditional Lost "is this the whole truth" quality to it.
MissUnderstood - at least you got to hear Borat's speech in all its absurdity but in half the American heartland they beeped him out!
DragonLass- I knew the results and because of the internet coverage and my trusty recorder I was able to speed through 3 hours of boring to the 20 mins of stuff I actually wanted to see.

  • by Cat on January 18, 2007 at 09:27 AM

I haven't bothered with any tv or movies. it's all rubbish (Tv) or over priced (movies). I love dvd's and bit torrents. Have watched both seasons of weeds, half of season three of lost and greys anatomy and have the boxed sets of all seasons of the west wing, veronica mars and arrested development. Watching them on TV was too painful the way times and days were changed, and ads just ruin it. I don't think i can go back to watching regular tv.

Tribal Mind replies: Now you have a simpler process than BitTorrent for seeing US shows early. See above.

  • by lex on January 18, 2007 at 09:57 AM

The site that CSquires mentioned is really good. Thanks heaps!! The advantage of torrents, however, is that you can burn them onto a DVD and watch them on your tv screen (which you can't do with this). But still a great site!! I can't believe they even had "Mind Your Language" on there. Gosh...I remember that show. That was in the early 80s wasn't it??? And also old episodes of the Twlight Zone...

  • by Helena on January 18, 2007 at 01:33 PM

Beckala - never fear they start getting to it and despite the big cliffhanger at the end of episode 6 they (the producers) promise the rest of the season will cover a wider range of the remaining characters* than the first six did. * Yes that is a hint. The producers have started to negotiate an end date for the series with the network so they can get on with streamlining the story and in their words not run three seasons too long like the X-files. ABC America are showing the last 16 episodes of this season without a break- the chance of 7 following suit - the proverbial two chances.

  • by Cat on January 18, 2007 at 01:48 PM

Loving "Men in Trees" about the only bright spot on TV at the moment. Am surprised nine hasnt yanked it off yet as the networks usually do with anything I like eg - Stargate, Scrubs, Arrested Development, etc. etc.
Did enjoy seeing Supernatural back again though. Looking forward to new eps of Medium and House as well. Anyone know if ER is coming back to nine some time soon? Hope they give it a decent run this year.

  • by tess on January 18, 2007 at 03:03 PM

"The producers have started to negotiate an end date for the series with the network so they can get on with streamlining the story and in their words not run three seasons too long like the X-files."

Wonder if they'll do the same with Prison Break. That show has only a limited lifespan IMO.

  • by cronk on January 18, 2007 at 04:33 PM

Hey TM
Good to see Supernatural breaking the million mark...was that the case last year on their average weekly ratings? Also did it win it's timeslot (if not what did?)
Oh and i have seen Apocolyto and it's very good...if you're into high thrilling gore movies that is.
I also watched the Golden Globes (to see Brangelina). I think simply that people don't like these type of award shows because most of the winners are people we hardly heard of like the guy who won best actor for Scotlands King something or other. With exception to Meryl and Borat. Although i can't wait for the Oscars.
Lastly i'm jumping out of my skin for the return of the biggest loser YAY!

  • by steve on January 18, 2007 at 06:34 PM

Tess, I agree with you whole-heartedly re: ER, I hadn't watched it in years, then watched one episode and I was hooked! Hopefully Nine will want to cash in on the whole new interest thanks to John Stamos becoming part of the cast, as well as filling in the gaps their newly purchased programming was SUPPOSED to fill (but almost all of their shows got cancelled already, particularly kidnapped, or whatever the new Dana Delaney show is called, which they are still advertising with lots of hype, despite only running for 13 episodes before getting the chop) But then again, they might just cobble together 100 favourite moments featuring Graham Kennedy, hosted by Bert Newton, featuring Eddie McGuire. Because Lord knows we need more of those programs!!

  • by beckala on January 18, 2007 at 09:23 PM

To all the fellow torrent fans who have seen all 6 eps like me( don't worry no spoilers!)

1- It certainly gets going with a 'bang' in ep1 doesn't it?

2 - I was waivering a bit in ep4 because of the frustration factor. (I shook my fist at the telly and shouted Tell us who you are! Why are you doing this you nasty 'Others'?!)

3- I loved ep5 although the death (not saying who) left me bummed as I really like that character and I didn't love the supernatural elements toward the end (vague enough to not give anything away?)

4- How good was the cliffhanger in ep6? WOW!! That was awesome telly, can't wait to start torrenting ep7 when it comes back in the US in Feb.

  • by Matt on January 19, 2007 at 12:08 PM

For better or worse, most Australians couldn't give a toss about Mel Gibson's incident a few months ago.
They stayed away from Apocalypto either because they had no interest in it, knew nothing about it because of poor marketing, or because the Australian public as a whole are uninquisitive, mainstream and western civilization-focused.

  • by Ray on January 19, 2007 at 12:29 PM

Matt
1. Definitely! But the rest of the ep slowed considerably.
2. My frustration is their capacity to answer questions while creating 5 more.
3. The death shocked me both because I also really liked the character and because I should have seen it coming miles off but it snuck right up on me.
4. I swore at the end of episode 6 and immediately calculated the weeks till it is back! That cliffhanger has a lot of potential. The producers have sworn to deliver. I cannot wait to see what happens next.
5. I loved the Boston Red Sox joke but that will go over most Aussie's heads when it airs here.

  • by Cat on January 19, 2007 at 01:54 PM

What gets my attention:
Glad that Supernatural has returned! Waiting on the next series of Prison Break, Jericho and Lost as well. Crazy Betty too!
What doesn't get my attention: (A.K.A pet viewing hates)
Probably would get a lot of guys agreeing with me here (and some ladies)
Very few exceptions to the below.
1: Almost any show whose title contains any of the words: "Celebrity", "Star", "Awards". Bores me comatose - virtully guarantees that I will give it the flick.
2: Shows with, any involvement at all, of: Woody Allen, Whoppie Goldberg. Urh!
3: Most American sit-coms involving couples or families (personal preference), unless animated.
4: Mid-show ads on SBS and any ads on pay-TV (OK mentioned it previously, but it really sh*ts me). No excuses. Want to see ads? watch free to air TV.
5: Pop-up captions on free to air TV advertising other programs.

  • by Dave T on January 19, 2007 at 02:00 PM

Cat - yes that red sox reference highlights just how long the island dwellers have been out of touch doesn't it?
Were you rivetted when you saw the hand drawn signs in video that was played for one of the main characters(vague enough to not give anything away?)
That had me on the edge of my seat (because I was watching my HD avi files on my divx dvd player as I hate sitting in front of the computer to watch TV - learn to use bittorrent people!)

  • by name needed on January 19, 2007 at 03:19 PM

Is the CBS sitcom "The Class" going to be shown on TV, if so do you know when???

The Tribal Mind replies: Not on any Australian program preview for the year that I have seen, but there will be a reader who knows. Why do you ask?

  • by go the aussies on January 19, 2007 at 07:51 PM

Hi everyone, I just would like to say that i have seen the first 12 eps of the new series Ugly Betty. I think the show is great and recomened you watch it. I believe it will get great ratings for channel 7. I Also think that the only network that has good new shows is channel 7. Channel 9's time as number one is long gone. I think they have no new good shows and i believe that they just copy channel 7, i.e dancing on ice from dancing with the stars and now code blue coppied from channel 7 Boarder Security. I beleive they deserve not to win this year if they are not going to put any original programs. GO CHANNEL 7, the new number 1 network. 7 in 07
