Updated 9am Sunday August 20
It was the week when Channel Seven ran out of puff and Nine realised it could breathe easy. Seven showed that it has no more blockbusters up its sleeve, that it is prone to panic, and that Eddie McGuire can sit back and rely on the footy finals to get his network over the line.
We can now predict how this year will go in television: Nine will end up as the most watched station, but with the lowest audience share in its history. Channel Seven will stay at number two, but with increased audience in the 25-54 age group. Ten will have the same share as last year, but will be the most watched network with viewers aged 16-39. ABC will be down a bit, and SBS and Pay TV will be up a lot.
Seven's newly launched American dramas -- Bones, Crossing Jordan and Criminal Minds -- are stuck around a million viewers, and its new Aussie slice of "reality", Celebrity Survivor, will need to do a lot better than 1.3 million to give Seven a second half as strong as its first half. Not even a new season of Dancing With The Stars will be enough to let Seven catch up.
The ABC's hottest show of the week was Spicks and Spicks, which demonstrated there is justice in the universe by getting 1.2 million viewers in the mainland capitals --100,000 more than You May Be Right, Seven's attempt to clone it. But Dr Who is mysteriously fading for the ABC on Saturday night -- down to 868,000. Clearly the fans prefer werewolves to Cybermen.
Nine won the week with 29.7 per cent of the prime time audience, while Seven got 26.6, Ten got 22.0, ABC got 15.7 and SBS got 6.0. That set the pattern for the remaining weeks of the year. Will Nine now feel relaxed enough to broadcast those "risky" series it has been holding onto -- Rome and The Sopranos?

Paul Hogan might be in trouble with the tax department, but he's still a hero to the kind of Australians who stay home on Saturday nights.
Until Friday, Channel Seven was easily winning the week. It had the most watched show (Border Security) and impressive results for the finale of It Takes Two, Grey's Anatomy in its new timeslot, and the finale of Lost. Channel Ten was recovering from the Yasmin debacle with healthy audiences for House and Australian Idol. Then Channel Nine filled its entire prime time schedule for Saturday with tales of Crocodile Dundee and everything changed.
Hogan's first movie attracted 1.24 million viewers in the mainland capitals on Saturday night and his second attracted 960,000. The bushie in the big city even diverted some Dr Who fans. The Cybermen episode drew only 881,000, down from nearly a million the previous Saturday.
Nine ended up winning the week with 29.2 per cent of the prime time audience, while Seven averaged 28.3 per cent, Ten got 21.5, the ABC got 15.7 and SBS got 5.3.

What did you make of the final episode of Lost, which was the most watched show of Thursday night? It seemed to fill several plot gaps and take the characters and the viewers to the edge of a new understanding, while raising more questions. Viewers learned, for example, that Desmond's predecessor in the hatch was the American who employed Sayid in Iraq. We'd be interested in your theories.
Seven won last night with 32.4 per cent of the prime time audience, while Nine got 29.9 per cent, Ten got 19.4, ABC got 12.3 and SBS got 6.1.

The difference between an old episode and an unseen episode is now apparent to Channel Ten. On Wednesday night House added 400,000 viewers who weren't there last week. Until it gets its act together on other programming, Ten had better keep showing the newies - even if that means fresh Houses don't last till the end of the ratings year.
Channel Seven won the night with 27.6 per cent of the primetime audience, while Ten got 26.7, Nine got 25.6, ABC got 15.8 and SBS got 4.3. Seven is now well ahead for the week, with the finale of Lost still to come tonight.

Don't write off Australian Idol just yet. After a dud start on Sunday, it gained 200,000 viewers to be the most watched program on Monday night.
Ten's decision to replace Yasmin with Futurama was rewarded with 892,000 viewers - a lot more than Yasmin managed, but way behind the numbers Big Brother and The Biggest Loser were getting in that timeslot. Home and Away and Temptation have both held onto the viewers who were driven away from Ten by Yasmin.
Channel Seven won the night with 28.3 per cent of the prime time audience, while Nine got 26.9, Ten got 22.4, ABC got 16.1 and SBS got 6.2.

Channel Ten didn't farewell its troubles by jilting Yasmin. It appears that Sunday night viewers felt supersaturated by singing with It Takes Two and were not keen to start all over again with Australian Idol, which, with an average of 1.35 million viewers in the mainland capitals, was down 16 per cent on its opening episode of last year (although it did rise to 1.67 million in the last half hour).
Meanwhile Channel Seven found crime buffs reluctant to shift from their established favourite, CSI, to an untried new team in Criminal Minds.
Nine won the night with 31.0 per cent of the prime time audience, followed by Seven on 28.6 and Ten on 22.3.

The ratings race is updated every weekday as an unpaid service for readers of David Dale's Tribal Mind column, published each Tuesday in The Sydney Morning Herald. Criminal Minds was ok. I gave it a shot because the CSI crime shows are all so formulaic and familiar. You can always guess which one dunnit in under 10 minutes. As for him being the hottest new detective on TV? meh... Don't know if I'll be back.
I'd rather watch Goren in Law & Order CI. At least he's quirky. Will that come back after Idol settles into a regular time slot?
TM: I notice Scrubs is on during the day now. How does that rate at 11am compared to 11.30pm? Have 7 realised that this really is a brilliant show and decided to get more daytime ratings out of it than they would at night?
Tribal Mind replies: re Scrubs, I'll tell you later this week when i have some figures. Other questions: your guess is as good as mine.
TM, why only six figures? what were the rest of the top 15?
Tribal Mind replies: Problem with info source. Fixed now.
TM - I think that Yasmin, just like Idol and It Takes Two, has suffered from viewers needing a bit of a break from "investment" TV shows.
The way I see it, if a fan watched 3 months worth of Big Brother, they aren't immediately going to want to invest another 3 months of regular viewing to a new program. If Ch10 (or Ch7) did maybe 3 of these long term investment shows a year, with about a month in between each, it would give the viewer a chance to re-charge their batteries and be ready for the next program. By starting Yasmin straight after BB, Ch10 didn't give the viewer time to take a breather.
Thoughts?
It was an odd choice for Ch 10 to launch their new series of 'Australian Idol' on the same night as the final episode of another song contest like 'It Takes Two'. The loyalties would have been divided especially cosidering ITT has two former Idols on the show. Especially disappointing for them considering that the audition shows are usually high-raters. I'm sure Idol will pick up but unless they can unearth some spectacular talent they'll have a smaller audience than last year.
Thank goodness Yasmin's short engagement has come to a quick end. There is a feeling of Celebrity/Reality overload. Too much on at once. Are the producer's of 'Dancing On Ice' and 'Celebrity Survivor' starting to panic yet?
Hi TM, We missed you towards the end of last week. I think you do a great job with this blog so keep it up. Not sure about Oz Idol this year. I won't be tuning in regularly that's for sure. Looking forward to Greys tonight though at the earlier time slot.
Anyone else thing Criminal Minds was really good? It was good to have a show that's different to CSI and Law and Order but still in the same cetergory. I'll be tuning in again tonight.
7 has a pretty strong line up for the second half of the year, Criminal Minds, Bones, The Unit, The Force, I won't even bother with 10 or 9.
Its strange,
Just looking through the TV guide yesterday. For all the regular programing there are only 3 shows in a week that I deem essential viewing. None of which are reality based. Whats happend with Yasmin I think really highlights people are really sick of this reality dribble. The same goes for the celebrity dancing and singing programs too. I understand that these shows are cheap to produce but television programming, atleast on the commercial networks is in a real dismal state at the moment. With less and less people watching TV it makes you think whats everyone doing with there new TV's as more and more are sold everyday.
How is Lost rating these days compared to this time last year?
Tribal Mind replies: Down about 400,000. See earlier blogs for discussion (www.smh.com.au/tribalmind)
With the final of 'It Takes Two' beaten by the evening news, on two networks, it can't be a good sign for a second season. At best a show of mediocre karaoke duets. Sadly another local production has become an endangered species none the less.
Hi TM,
I'm curious how the football codes compared over the weekend. League Friday and Sunday, Union twice on Saturday and AFL on Saturday and Sunday.
Thanks
Adam
Tribal Mind replies: Immensely complicated, varying by state and code exactly as you would predict. National figures are meaningless.
I think It Takes Two will definitely be back for a second season. It did quite well considering the competition of 60 minutes and Big Brother. And it wins the 6:30 timeslot which channel 7 wouldn't have done with most of the other things it has schlepped on in that time (except where are they now). It was never going to be Dancing with the Stars but it has done a hell of a lot better than Dancing on Ice and probably doesnt cost anywhere near as much to make. Grant and Teresa improved over time. I bet it comes back!!
I watched Australian Idol last night and saw the footage of auditions at Alice Springs. I also heard there was an audition in Broken Hill. Later I found that Idol would not be shown on local TV stations in these two cities! What was the use of holding auditions in rural towns like these if the show won't be shown locally? How can local people support the contestants should they reach the top 24, or even the final 12?
How did Bert's Friday Night All Stars go? Was it up on last week? Thanks.
Tribal Mind replies: 868,000. Last week 833,000.
Like James, I was looking thru The Guide this morning and realized it was a good thing I had two VCRs, not because of a clash of wont to see shows on different channels at the same time but becuase the wont to see shows are on late at night ( Boston Legal Scrubbs BS Gallactica SG1 )or you just know this particular show (CSI) will be packed with adds and self promos that just cry out to be FastForwarded.
As for Yasmin getting trashed - who cares.
Australian Idol launch)actually rated 1.35 making it number 6 on your list.
TM, how did Cops rate last night?
Tribal Mind replies: Not in top 50, so less than 206,000
James, they're watching DVDs.
I thought Criminal Minds last night was really good. The formulas of the other crime shows are starting to get tired now. Just when I thought i had lost interest in crime shows, they've come up with one which is actually suspenseful. It will easily out pace Close to Home on Monday nights. They should leave it on at 8:30 Sunday also though!! Surely 7 have realised they need something to prop up Sundays beyond 8:30 other than movies. If they had done a couple of point better the last 2 Sundays, like last night then they would have won the last 2 weeks.
Not being a fan of CSI, I watched the double episode of Criminal Minds last night and was quite disappointed. It seems like the producers have 'borrowed heavily' from NCIS and Numbers; 2 shows that I watched only once before deciding I could spend my time doing better things.
Accordingly, I won't be back for more tonight, although I will give Bones a go later in the week.
It will be interesting to see the ratings for Futurama tomorrow, now that Yasmin has been returned to the obscurity to which she rightfully belongs.
BTW, glad you are back TM.
I watched about 5 minutes of Yasmine on Friday night: not surprised it got "boned" - an absolute heap of crap!
Based on the already poor ratings for Aussie Idol and Yasmine's early demise, reality television certainly seems to have had its day on OZ TV: prospects for Celebrity Survivor later in the year on Channel 7 don't look good.
David, a top night of telly on ABC last night: how well did both Bleak House and the Mozart series rate?
Thanks once again for your always informative, interesting blog: a TV ratings junkie like me is now addicted.
Tribal Mind replies; Bleak 694,000; Mozart 543,000.
What the hell is a good actor like Mandy Patinkin doing in this very average show? I think I remember saying the same thing when Gary Sinise joined csi ... nevermind. Unfortunately the best cop show by far would never be shown on free-to-air here ... The Wire (on HBO). Awesome show, if anyone recalled and appreciated Homicide, which used to be shown on Seven, would really like this.
Anybody remember Boomtown?
Well done Australia, for saying no to Yasmin. Death to all these so-called 'reality' shows I say. I will be retuning my TV to pick up Ch.10 to watch futurama.
It will be interesting to see how it fares against Temptation. Even though it is only a temporary change, I hope futurama wins in its timeslot.
I watched Criminal Minds last night and thought that it was pretty good and quite suspensful. Am tired of CSI and Law and Order (although I still have a soft spot for Goren)and it was great to see something different. Personally, I think Mandy Patinkin is such a great actor that any show with him in it is worth watching. Chicago Hope just wasn't the same when he left.
I think what Channel 10 needs to do is maybe somehow do surveys on their target audience to see what they would want. Then if they get a high number, look how much it would cost and (or not) make it.
I think the Yasmin and potential Oz Idol failures can come down to Ten having a few successful years and maybe becoming a tiny big arrogant
I know it's been said, but I just wanted to add my 2 cents and give great praise to the viewers of Australia for voting with their feet and deserting Yasmin in droves.
I'm probably being a little premature here, but it's really boosted my faith in my fellow citizens. Not only did we complain about how stupid it was (from almost every source of media I encountered) but for all intents and purposes, no-one watched it!
I think it says a lot about the value we place on marriage, and our own collective level of self respect. Even if the inevitable happens, and we are subjected to Yasmin's wedding (remember Marty and Jess? 10 does!) it will probably rate well, but it will be a happy ending for this probably very embarrassing chapter in this woman's life. Moreover, Australia will watch it because it will have everything the show lacked (including an absence of Ryan Phelan, with any luck).
Now here's hoping Yasmin sells her story and skips the country - so we can all put this sorry episode behind us as soon as possible.
PS. Wouldn't it be lovely if Australia allowed couples who loved each other to marry, regardless of their gender?
What has happened to Numbers?
Has Ch 10 pulled it completely or it is just another one of their temporary quirks, like two weeks worth of repeats of both House and NCIS?
Surely it's far better for their ratings than Yasmin could ever have hoped to be?
In fact, the knockers of reality TV should remmeber that the two highest rating shows at the moment are Border Security and Medical Emergency .. both Ob doc / reality programs.

And yet our fellow citizens are still keeping show like BB and the Wedge on our screens? Your faith in Aussie audiences may indeed be a little premature.
Sandra wrote: "In fact, the knockers of reality TV should remmeber that the two highest rating shows at the moment are Border Security and Medical Emergency .. both Ob doc / reality programs."
Except, these shows really are reality based, unlike the total contrivance that BB is and which is totally devoid of any reality. The term 'reality show' is bandied around too much these days to cover traditional genres that have been around since day one of TV but were never called 'reality' shows until now. Into this category I would place 'talent' shows like Idol, It Takes Two, Dancing With The Stars, Stars In Their Eyes, etc. These are all talent and/or variety shows, not 'reality' shows.
You wouldn't call such programs of yesteryear as The Young Talent Time, Pot Of Gold, Candid Camera as reality shows, would you?
Agree with Petes thoughts re a breather for the 'investment' shows. like a pokie which pays out 80% on the dollar. if u do the maths yo'll give it a miss after a few entertaining series.
How does Boston legal stack up verse the competition on a monday night? Highly entertaining and surprised it has not moved to earlier time slot.
Tribal Mind replies: Tell you when I get the figures today.
I'm guessing a sluggish start for Grey's tonight (around 1.5 million) that will build to the 2 million mark by seasons end. The finale is simply amazing!
Seven did a good job to get relatively close last night and should take the week. Last week they were annihalated on Sunday and finished only 0.2% down... The new range of shows look like winners - The Master, Bones, C.Minds, The Sunday Todd McKenney show (although where the celebrities are coming from astounds me), The Force, more Dancing...
Also can ANYONE explain why the final season of Will and Grace - one of the wittiest sitcoms of all time - is shown on a weekend AFTERNOON!!! At least put it on at 11.30pm on a weeknight! They could pretty much repeat this in primetime and have a small hit on their hands.
Oh and I also wanted to add.... the 1.67m who watched the final 30 mins of Idol should be the focal point of the discussion. Its not as if it BEGAN with this number and dropped away - this bodes reasonably well for the future I think.
Also interesting to note that in CSI/Channel 9 obsessed Melbourne, Criminal Minds was the number 2 program for the evening on Sunday. I wonder how it pans out on Monday nights....
Haha Thank God Yasmine's Not Here. I found the show very boring where nothing ever happens. Besides, who would choose that over Home and Away or Temptation?(or even ABC news?) I admit, I felt alot of satisfaction hearing Yasmine's gone and that ch10 has lower ratings for Australian Idiot. I havent liked them since they put Charmed in the off season. I'm very happy that Grey's Anatomy is on at 8:30 now. Good onya Seven(now put Alias back on lol).
*OMG, I missed Futurama! This is what happens after months of avoiding TV at 7pm. After refusing to watch H&A, Yasmin/BB06 and that annoying shifty-eyed quizshow host for ages, I cannot even programme myself to sit infront of the couch or even set the VCR, when a good show like FUTURAMA is on.
*Still, I can't wait to see how it rates tomorrow.
Johnston I think you should be counting your lucky stars. If only the rest of Australia could be so lucky and not have to watch the mindless crap that is Australian Idol. As for Kyle he is a pathetic excuse for a human being. He wouldn't know talent if it bit him in his huge arse.
Yasmin, I'm sorry I'm dumping you. It's not you it's me. I would like to be friends though. I just feel that we have grown apart. Maybe another time, another place, just not now.
In today's CBD column, it mentions that Eddie is having trouble with Kerry-Ann as well as with Jana and Jessica. I hadn't heard of any issues with Kerry-Ann. What's the story there? Anyone know or can point me to the story?
For PDM71. This gossip from Mediaspy:
NINE Network star Kerri-Anne Kennerley would consider jumping ship to Seven because she feels neglected by her employer - including being refused her own business cards.
The TV veteran of more than 25 years feels left out of Nine's main game despite generating publicity and $18 million annual revenue on her Mornings With Kerri-Anne program.
She was disheartened Bert Newton - whose Channel 10 Good Morning Australia program she killed off - was signed by Nine as a returning prime-time star while her ideas for similar roles were ignored.
Kennerley was responding to a Melbourne report that Seven was planning to poach her as her contract with Nine was ending.
Tribal Mind comments: I have shortened this comment because I don't think Mediaspy would appreciate having its entire exclusive story reprinted on another site. Those who wish to read the full KAK details can google mediaspy.
Hey
Someone a few posts down was complaining that Channel 7 was showing Will and Grace in the afternoons. What state are you in?
Seven have not done this for months.
They were screening episodes in the important 5:30 Sunday slot as a lead in to Seven News earlier in the year.
However, this was stopped and there is 7 episodes to go before the series signs off forever and I believe Seven plan to run these eps in primetime this summer.
AARON
Oh no. Yasmin's gone! What happened to my favourite show!
Just kidding.
What a boon to get first run (on FTA) Futurama eps every night at 7pm. Great episode too.
Good one Channel 10.
Futurama at 7pm - I can't see that lasting a long time. TM - how did it rate ?
What 10 should do is make the Australian Idol audition process into a daily half hour 7pm show, and when the final however-many are chosen, show their preparations, and weekly goings-on as the 7pm show, then have the big Sunday & Monday shows. It worked for The Biggest Loser, and I think it could work for AI. They said they wanted to make some changes, TBL was originally a 1 hour per week show, and was successfully changed into a 1/2 hour daily show.
Good luck channel 10, because like everyone else has said, Yasmin was crap, and i'm glad it's gone.
Criminal Minds is great - first of all for Mandy Patinkin - I agree with others on this blog that he (and Peter MacNicol)made Chicago Hope worth watching and they both left in the same episode :(
It won't be everyone's cup of tea but it's already superior to CSI because it's based on reality - read the book Mindhunter by John Douglas - the FBI agent who pioneered criminal profiling, they are almost putting his book up on the screen verbatim, Now that Numb3rs (the other closely based FBI show) is toast, I'll be watching this one with interest.
Yasmin Got Lost which is good news for people (like myself) who want an alternative to Soap or Game Shows, hopefully Futurama does well. Ten should be congradulated for taking the kind of tough decision that used to be the hallmark of channel Nine. Sometimes the ratings system works I guess.
Aaron,
Seven were showing Will & Grace on Sunday afternoons at about 1pm up until about 2 months ago. There were only 3 or 4 eps left until the final. Seven have treated the show with absolute disrespect and never bothered to keep it in a consistant timeslot over it's 8 yr run.
Some Aus Idol figures for monday.
1.587 million
1.900 million 2nd half hour
2.020 million peak at 8.32pm
What happened to Numb3rs? Did it finish its season? Was it withdrawn? Was it suspended? I miss it!
How did SVU rate?
I'm not sure what Network Ten's rationale behind showing two new episodes back to back was (I would have rathered that they didn't), but it would be curiosity-sating to know how it went.
I'm still unhappy Ten moved SVU to Monday in the first place, as it prevents me from watching Cold Case conveniently.
Tribal Mind replies: ep1, 992,000; ep2 885,000.
Hi TM, Could you please tell me how Cold Case went last night. Thanks :)
Tribal Mind replies: see above
Hi David,
I heard a rumour that C7's 'Australia's Worst Driver' is making a return to TV. This was one of the funniest and popular reality TV shows in its time and i look forward to its return. Has anyone else heard a whisper of when it will start?
Great to see GA doing so well in the 8.30 time slot. It looks like it picked up nearly 300k moving to the earlier time. I am enjoying this series so much. I bought the first one last week (only 9 eps unfortunately) and have already watched 7 of them. URST is alive and well.
What was on ACA last night that made it flog Today Tonight? Usually its the other way round by a long shot!
In which cities did 7 news and T&T beat 9
Good to see Greys is doing brilliantly too. Idol will be down the drain soon, despite last nights performance. Once it gets to the boring results episodes
Who won the night?
I've read before TM saying that networks read this blog. Well i reckon they read and contribute. Some of the stuff on here today and yesterday seems to be straight from the Channel 7 promos department. Some people are saying how strong the C7 programming looks for the rest of the year. They go on to mention certain shows. I am certain that reps from the networks are reading and contributing to this blog and trying to make themselves out to be a member of the public like anyone else, while pushing their programming. Most shows rate well through word of mouth, and if enough people get on here and talk up a show like Criminal Minds, then a rumour starts and people tune in. Don't be fooled by them. these contributions are obvious and not in the spirit of the blog.
That's really interesting to note that when Cold Case was up against Desperate Housewives it drew big audiences, around the 1.6-1.7 mill mark. Whilst Desperate Housewives was doing around 1.5 mill.
Now Grey's Antonomy has taken over DH's timeslot, it's drawing the same audience as DH was, but Cold Case has crashed to 1.28 mill.
Well, it looks as if the Despos leaving hasn't dented Channel 7 one bit! Gray's Anatomy has rated better this week (1.57 million) than the Despos' final last week (1.42 million, if I read last week's blog correctly).
And to think I was going to ask where the Despos fans had gone. :)
[Personally, I went to SBS for Top Gear - and I don't even like cars, but it's infectious fun; Broken News; and South Park. God, it's good to have Monday nights on SBS again! I couldn't leave the Despos, but I do love SBS on a Monday...]
Just wondering what the News ratings were for Sydney last night?
Thanks.
Now that Despos is gone Monday nights is wasteland to me. Idol is still entertaining but it's no longer must see TV. I have to wait up until 10.30pm to watch the only decent American series on the night for me: Boston Legal. And then there's Scrubs on after that. Why can't these quality shows screen in prime time?
No need to publish my comment. Just letting you know that you missed out on including the network percentages for Monday night.
If it was intentional, disregard. ;-)
Hey TM, who won the ratings last night? I can never tell just from seeing the Top 12...
Why did A Current Affair rate so high last night? What was on?
I hope Criminal Minds builds in its audience. It's a good show, and deserves to rate.
Any word on when Nine will show "Rome"? The DVD of series 1 has been released in the UK with a censorship rating of 18. Same as our R Rating. Maybe Nine have second thoughts about showing it.
David.
Tribals, I need to ease my social conscience if I could please.
I am wondering, how do the SBS News (nightly) and SBS's weekly Dateline rate please?
As what I'd consider the two main 'in your face' current news programs, I'd like to know how well they're received by Australians.
I have a feeling though that the results will highlight why BBQ discussions revolve more around the Dockers and the Roosters than the devastation in Lebanon.
Cheers! (Erm, and how do people put in paragraph breaks please? Getting one long paragraph here...)
Any idea who won last night?? Looks like a pretty close race!
Tribal Mind replies: I'll tell you as soon as I know. Something strange is happening with ratings info today. I suspect OzTAM is cracking down on unpaid releases.
What determines a smash hit?
At the end of Criminal Minds last night CH7 promo'd for next week by declaring the show a smash hit? Can we have a metre for us to judge the advertising jargon used to push prime time shows?Smash Hit - anything over achieving over 1.75m two weeks in a row?Oh and by the way, how many people constitute "encore presentation by popular demand"? - 3, 30 or 300 phonecalls or is "popular demand" just another way of trying to cash in on a "smash hit".
Don't get me started on the crap "20million Americans sat spellbound" or "The Number 1 show that everyone is talking about".
Guys, you've got to start providing the proof - how many is "everyone"?
Hi TM, do you know how the new JTV is rating on late friday night and early sat morning? it's a great show and the saturday version is way better than the crappy rage top 50!
Tribal Mind replies: ratings are averaged over the entire time of the show, so they look bad -- less than 200,000. But it was the same with Rage, which was pioneering in its time but looked as if it had a low audience.
Hey
Will and Grace was only shown at 5:30pm in the Sydney market as a lead in to the news. It previously had primetime slots which is surprising based on its ratings performance. Other states that had local programming, programmed those eps at various slots such as 1pm and 3pm, so at least they would not fall behind. In fact, Adelaide is still showing eps on Sat. They are the final state that is behind but they havejust 2 eps and they have caught up.
There is actually SEVEN episodes left to screen and Seven will air them in primetime in summer - which again is lucky considering the ratings in the last couple of seasons.
Also, yes Channel 7 is developing Australia's Worst Driver type program again to be hosted by Grant Denyer.
Also, Numbe3rs was pulled because it was getting Yasmin type ratings.
AARON
Guess I'll try again!
TM, is it possible to get ratings on SBS News and Dateline please? I'm interested in the popularity of the more 'hard hitting' current affairs programs on our television.
Cheers! (Also, how do we put breaks in our paragraphs please?)
Tribal Mind replies: Please don't put breaks in your paragraphs. It makes the comments too spaced out and requires other readers to scroll down for much longer than necessary. If I have time, I remove any par breaks inserted by commenters so readers can get through the comments quickly. [par break coming up]
Last night World News Australia got 286,000 viewers in the mainland capitals. Dateline got less than this, but how much less I cannot say because I only see the top 50 shows for any day.
Jimmy James said:-
>Criminal Minds is great - first of all for Mandy Patinkin >
Patinkin was one of the stars of one of the best comedy/dramas I've seen in recent years - "Dead Like Me", in which he was the head of a small group of Grim Reapers whose job it is to collect the souls of the dying.
Sadly it only lasted two seasons, and even more sadly, I don't think it's ever been seen here on free-to-air. However, it was screened on Foxtel and the first season is availably locally on DVD - well worth checking out.
The scene in one of the last episodes in which Patinkin's character, Rube, gently collects the soul of his now-elderly daughter, while singing her favourite lullaby, just about had me in tears.........
TM: Last night.
Seven 28.3%
Nine 26.9%
Ten 22.4%
ABC 16.1%
SBS 6.2%
Tribal Mind says: "Please don't put breaks in your paragraphs. It makes the comments too spaced out and requires other readers to scroll down for much longer than necessary. If I have time, I remove any par breaks inserted by commenters so readers can get through the comments quickly."
Grrrr! It's been my long standing peeve about this blog, that you never know when you're gonna get a decent paragraph break when responding. It's such a pain to have to read through one long, unbroken, mess of words, with quotes and everything else running together.
I'd much rather scroll a few extra lines more than, as I sometimes do, skip long posts because it just looks too hard to read. Also, if you're going to edit out all formatting, what's the point of the preview window which actually encourages you to see what your formatting will look like (You may use HTML tags for style)? Please TM, do not edit out paragraph breaks.
I think the figures for 'futurama' will improve owing from the fact that some of the fans of futurama may not have known it aired last night. Once more people have discovered this, then I think the ratings will increase. I am however not sure on how much they'll raise.
I just starting to get back into the Numb3rs series on Channel ten 9.30pm on Mondays only to discovering it seems to have disappeared as quickly as it started. Is there any info as to whether it's coming back on again anytime soon?
This is a great blog TM, and many thanks for all the unpaid effort you put into it.
However I am tempted to agree with Ian that Ch7 is seeding the blog with suggestions that we watch some of their new shows, it reminds me of the incident earlier in the year when many girls fawned over the dude from prison break for a week and were never heard from again.
This is an old question now, but did the Chaser's rating improve dramatically after the widely reported bulldogs' fans and Chas run-in?
Thanks again
Quoth Ian: "I am certain that reps from the networks are reading and contributing to this blog and trying to make themselves out to be a member of the public like anyone else, while pushing their programming."
In that case, where are the Channel 9 reps pushing DOA? The Channel 10 reps putting a positive spin on Yasmin? Channel 7 gets good comments here because we're watching them take on the might of a seemingly complacent Channel 9. Never underestimate the tenacity of the Australian public to support the underdog!
Of course, if Channel 7 does end up beating Channel 9 in the ratings, then we'll all probably love Channel 9 as they struggle back from the brink of disaster, yadda yadda yadda, insert your own hyperbole and cliches here.
PS, TM, I really like paragraph breaks. Makes it SO much easier to read!
Hey
I am a little annoyed at the person who wrote that some posts look like they have come from the Seven promotions department. Sometimes fortune swings in the favour of a particular network. Nine has had a lot bad luck and poor programming decisions of late.
Channel 7 have run Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy without repeats as well as Lost where Nine and Ten keep inserting repeat eps of Cold Case, CSI, House and NCIS. Channel 7 happen to have Bones, Celebrity Survivor, True Blue, The Real Seachange, The Master, You May Be Right, Forensic Investigators, Alias, Dancing with the Stars, The Amazing Race, The Unit and others on the way. Nine have a limited run series called Rome, a 7 week series of Two Twisted, late night The Sopranos, maybe RPA and not much else. I would say more people talking about Seven because there is more on offer at this time. Maybe with the new American shows next year the pendelum will shift to Nine or Ten. With Channel 7 closing the gap on Nine, there seems to be more to talk about there. Unless you want to talk about repeats of House, NCIS, The Simpsons, Cold Case, Dancing on Ice, Yasmin's Getting Married, Suspicious Minds thats been moved to late night or perhaps Shock Docs??
Murder should be legalised just for enougth time to kill the complete f*%$ers who came up with this quizmaniac shite that replaced any
semblance of decent tv after 12pm i.e. dave letterman. My stabbing reflex is acting in overtime, please,
please, higher authorities, please,
please, LET ME KILL THESE F*&^%ERS NOW, please .....
What are our thoughts on what will be a daily show for the next 7 weeks at 7pm on Channel 10?
Maybe Bewitched? Seinfield? They did a 'Best Of' Simpsons a few years back...'Futurama' cant be sustained 5 nights a week for 7 weeks...lets just hope, they dont consider 'The Steph Show: The Daily Edition'.
Or maybe Channel 10 might start their own game show?
I think the real reason why NINE has yet to show the mini-series 'Rome' is that it was really disliked by the UK, and got attacked by viewers and critics.
Not a good sign!
Any reason why the last few weeks you haven't said anything about Saturday viewing habits? I only ask as I am curious on a week to week basis to see how Dr Who is doing on the ABC, and your column is the only one publishing figures that I can find.
Tribal Mind replies: One possible answer to your question might be: Because I edit this blog unpaid, and sometimes need time to earn my living and have a life. Another might be: Apart from Dr Who, Saturday is the dullest viewing night of the week (Friday being next dullest) so there's not much point in going into detail about them. In fact, your question is based on a false premise, since I usually give Dr Who figures when I report the full week's results on a Sunday. Go to www.smh.com.au/tribalmind and look at the last few ratings blogs -- week 31, week 30, week 29.
To everyone that says a blanket "I'm sick of all reality shows" on the back of Yasmin's dumping, I beg to differ. A good show is a good show, reality or otherwise. Don't dismiss all reality shows on the back of this. Whilst Yasmin might have been a good idea, it was poorly executed. A less than engaging protagonist, dull banter, and little excitement during the playbacks, it was doomed to fail. But if you look at Project Runway on Pay-tv as an example, that is the way to put together reality television.
I'm just saying, don't blame an entire genre based on the last poor attempt to exploit it.
TM - Down the gurgler, would fit the description you are looking for.
The Saturday night question that keeps coming up is, is WHO (love the pun) won the 7.30 FTA timeslot between The rah-rahs, ballet with blood, 9's movie or Dr Who. Hopefully Dr Who, this second series has been brilliant.
Thanks for the unpaid work on this blog - it is appreciated.
Tribal Mind replies: Aha, that reminds me I forgot to give one questioner the figures for the saturday night rugby union. It got 614,000, of whom 294,000 were in Sydney and 231,000 were in Brisbane. Dr Who got 977,000.
Quoth Tribal Mind: "Apart from Dr Who, Saturday is the dullest viewing night of the week..."
But, but, but... Iron Chef!! Best show of the week! Makes Saturday night viewing essential! (I have small children. I have no life.)
Hmmm last nights viewing was so spread out. Maybe its because it was all s***
Isn't it interesting that theat 'Dancing On Ice' which is a rip-off of 'Dancing with the Stars' has mirrored the ratings freefall of 'X Factor' which was a direct rip-off of Australian Idol?
Also a stupid concept like 'Yasmin's Getting Married' mirrored the reality flop 'Playing It Straight' on Ch 7, from a couple of years ago. When will the networks realise that viewers don't like these reality shows that are cruel or contrived. That's why ratings were down on Big Brother this year too. Maybe something for Ch 10 to take note of for next years BB. Maybe they try putting some people in the house that have a brain and can actually talk about things rather than these vacuous people that spend most of their day preening themselves and looking at their reflection in the mirror.
Next Tuesday 'Crossin Jordan' is on at 9:30, Channel 7. And at 8:30 on channel 10, is a double of 'futurama'. The 7:00 timeslot is 'to be advised'.
I dont know who has the rights to what, but I would love to see 'Get Smart' fill the 7pm slot on channel 10, that would get me watching! Loved that show and I'm only 17!
TM - Have you used the pun "Dancing on Thin Ice" yet? A little obvious perhaps. If a new series is not announced, you could use "Dancing put on ice".
PS - Th Wedge is back over a million and that angers me no end. I watched it again last night to see if it had changed at all. Stupid me.
Hey TM, just wanted to let you know that you do a fantastic job here, and you ARE appreciated...so don't listen to the whingers and whiners.
I assume 7 has jumped to the lead this week with last nights massive win, could this be the turn around week where 7 take the lead back?
I suppose 'Dancing on Thin Ice' is too obvious?
'Drooping on Ice?' (Or is that a name for a show about ther sex lives of crystal meth users?)
Since it's up against the Simpsons and almost losing, how about:
'DOH! DOI DOA after bout with Simpsons.'
Judging by the success of Medical Emergency, perhaps Nein should rejig DOI to focus on the accidents and recoveries of the celebs involved.
They could maybe have a section where Torvill and Dean are held up in customs because their skates have blades that are classed as potential weapons...
New Adventures of Old Christine has been dumped, replaced by Getaway 90 minutes as of next week.
Interestingly, Criminal Minds is not rating even as well as Commander In Chief in the 930 Monday timeslot. Worries ahead for Ch7 if this trend continues.
TM - How is this?
Ice seized by Border Security - Celebrities involved embarrased by lack of coverage.
David - I too thought of Dancing on Thin Ice. Perhaps this might be better:
"Despite every effort to increase Jamie's height and attempts to hide the step he is standing on - DOI continues to fall in the ratings. Maybe ratings success in inversely related to Jamie's height!"
In fact that was one of the better things about Grant D - he was not embarrassed about being so much shorter than most of the celebrities on ITT.
Dancing with Yasmine? Gotta be a link somewhere...
I must also stick up for Saturday nights TV. The lineup of:-
7:30 - Doctor Who
8:30 - Iron Chef
9:25 - Last Detective (sadly finished)
and flicking to the various footballs in between is a good as any in the week. Include a bottle of wine and a few other drinks and it makes for a good night in...
All ABC & SBS in that lineup - Oh my god, I am turning into my parents...
While there was a bit of improvement last night (Portaits w' Rolf is sooo delightfully English!), Tuesday nights are clearly the worst night on TV. Have the networks done a deal with Hoyts/Greater Union to get people to the movies on Tuesday? I resorted to recording SVU and watching it last night.
So Dancing On Ice dropped, what, 0.01 million? Big deal!
Seems like this blog has an unhealthy obsession with bagging that show to me. It's not performing as Nine would like, it's not gonna get canned either, NEXT!
So how about talking about something interesting, rather than making smug, tired, easy 'jokes'?
Tribal Mind replies: DOA was 1.26m last week. But you're right - we won't mention it again unless we can think of a good joke.
Speaking of reality shows, the one I absolutely loved was The Apprentice.
So I'm wondering if Channel 9 plans to air the latest series anytime soon, or if it will also be relegated to the silly season?
DOA is now just a frozen moment, remember them?
The only reason 9 has won the last 2 weeks has been becuase of Sunday night. If 7 could do as much better as it did last Sunday every week 9 would never win because the rest of its week is weak.
But alsa channel 7 persists with movies. Like as if Stuck on You is going to grab any respectable audience. And as fun as the show sounds i reckon You May be Right is gonna bomb too!
How about: Channel 9's new reality show is "skating on thin ice".
Or: The ratings are suffering as much shrinkage as Karl Stefanovich in that tight lycra outfit.
If it wasn't for 60 Minutes and the weekend footy, Channel 9 would be in a big hole. With programming such as DOI and Bert's Family Feud on offer, no wonder Seven is giving them a good run for their money.
An idea for the ABC: why not an Aussie version of "Pictures With Rolf"?
My punny title entry: Dancing on Ice causing serious shrinkage.
True both literally and figuratively, I should imagine.
Dr DK don't you know it's people like you that make the ratings go back up!! Actually I met an american couple recently who thought the Wedge was the funniest thing going around... go figure!? I had to admit that I'd never watched because the ads were enough to put me off, asked them what sorts of things made them laugh and to be honest I still don't understand... no accounting for taste I guess. Mind you, it could just be the wasteland that is Tuesday night TV... the one night that makes Foxtel pay for itself!
TM I was thinking about taking up your challenge, but I feared my efforts might remain unappreciated if you didn't get many other responses, like on your recent Tuesday book blog ;-)
PS Still love your work, even though you have snubbed me!
Tribal Mind replies: Spare us the paranoia. The only reason a comment may be edited on this site would be for legal reasons. In what way have you been snubbed?
What sort of viewer numbers do those appalling midnight quiz shows pull? I can't imagine they'd get more than the shows they replaced (eg Star Trek, Letterman) Do they count towards the networks' Australian content quotas?
Flailing on ice? Limping on ice?
or perhaps: Now is the Winter of Nein's discontent.
How about 'Durie and Injury On Ice'.
If only Jamie's first name was Ian.
How about 'drowning on ice' ?
Quote fats: "What sort of viewer numbers do those appalling midnight quiz shows pull?"
They rely on users to send SMSes, or ring, using those hideously expensive phone numbers, don't they? In that case, who cares how they rate, so long as people are stupid enough to SMS/ring in, the money will keep on coming in.
I'm glad I'm not a night owl.
a guy: You have to admit, it is actually kind of fun seeing Nine have such an expensive failure and a lacklustre year in general after all the years and years of arrogance and big noting themselves. What comes around....
Still the One? I think not. :)
DOI needs Steven Bradbury, the only man on skates who could turn such a loser into a winner.
a guy at 12:24 PM, the reason that i do not like ch 9 is because a, the reception is absolute crap in my area. b, they take programs off air that they put on a s*** timeslot in the first place. c, they waste all their primetime with csi and 60 minutes
"Dying On Ice"
"Boredom On Ice"
"Tedium On Ice"
"Glad We're not those B grade Celebrities Selling our Souls on Ice"
How about, "Dicing with Ice". Channel 9 takes big (and expensive) risks for a dissapointing return.
Hey TM and readers,
I've been living overseas for two years now and would like to say a little something about ''Rome''.
The show is built on hype and little else. Do not get your hopes up that you'll enjoy it. It's a dud.
If you thought Yasmin's show was awful wait until you see this.
If TCN9 has it - it will prove a ratings failure. Mark these words!
Ice cold reception: more viewers slip through the cracks of Nine's ice dancing celebrity drop-fest
The best one is:
"Doing a 'Yasmin' on Ice"
others could be:
- "When 7even 8ate 9ine on Ice"
- "Hotdogs' dancing on ice"
- "Guaranteed low ratings on ice"
- "We just tried to copy the same format of channel 7's hugely successful 'Dancing with the stars' and re-named it... on ice"
"Dancing On Ice ratings: Slippery when all wet."
The only suitable new name for the dud DOI is 'The Titanic'.
Case dismissed!
Imposters on Ice: Nine's Tuesday melting in the spotlight!!
Ice Dancing Slip Slidin' Away
Dancing Show on the Rocks
Freestyle in Freefall
Ice Sliced and Diced
Rink is a stinker
Ch 7 beagle makes Nine's Ice Yellow
See You Later Skaters
Dancing on Ice in a spin
DOI and its audience anything but synchronised
I saw a promo tonight for Celebrity
Just wondering how Dr Who did over the weekend for the ABC? Did it beat the Bill?
Tribal Mind replies: Covered in last week's blog -- go to www.smh.com.au/tribalmind.
