On Saturday, Dr Who and the werewolf attracted 1.01 million viewers to the ABC, which also triumphed with 1.03 million for 'The Bill', clearly enjoying a renaissance. But Channel Nine won the week, with 28.4 per cent of the prime time audience, while Seven got 28.1 per cent, Ten got 21.8, ABC got 15.6 and SBS got 6.1.
Until Saturday, Nine and Seven were neck and neck, but then Nine scored with 'Funniest Home Videos' and 'King Solomon's Mines', which beat Seven's bizarre combination of 'Mrs Doubtfire' in three cities and 'Four Weddings and A Funeral' in two cities.

How about those Australian accents in 'Lost' on Thursday night -- a bit cockney, a bit Newzild, a bit Sethefriken, a bit American? But that implausibility, noticeable only to Australian viewers, didn't stop 'Lost' from being the most watched show of the night, nor Seven from equalling Nine's prime time audience share of 28.4 per cent for the week so far (Ten on 22.4, ABC on 14.6, SBS on 6.2).
As 'Lost' rises, the sitcoms sink -- Seven's Earl and Mother and Nine's Men and Christine are all plummeting. Click here to learn how canned laughter is turning Australians off sitcoms.

So this was the big question in tellybiz: where would 1.4 million 'Prison Break' tragics go after their favourite show ended?
Would they stay with Seven for adults-only versions of the trashfest 'Las Vegas'? Would they become fulltime members of Gregory House's diagnostic team (1.5 million last week), instead of just dipping in during commercial breaks? Would they finally give Anthony LaPaglia the recognition he deserves in the underrated 'Without A Trace' (1.1 million last week)?
Well, 'Las Vegas' got a pathetic 878,000 in the mainland capitals, suggesting Seven will replace it fast, and the application of a little arithmetic to last night's chart provides the rest of the answer:

Despite intriguing reports of injuries during rehearsals, Channel Nine's "live and dangerous" Skating on Ice lost 200,000 viewers between last week and Tuesday night. Most of them returned to Seven's Border Security, but a few went over to Ten to see how Ricky Gervais scripted an episode of The Simpsons.
Despite the skating slump, Nine won the night with 29.5 per cent of the prime time audience, while Seven, suffering a similar slump in its audience for 'Medical Emergency', got 29.4 per cent, Ten got 20.6, ABC got 14.4, and SBS got 6.1.
To give you an idea of how the stations spin the statistics to their advantage each day, this was Nine's press release on what happened last night: "The strength of Nine's new series Torvill and Dean's Dancing On Ice has led the Network to score its highest share on a Tuesday, both in Sydney and nationally, since February (excluding Commonwealth Games). Outside the exclusive Commonwealth Games coverage, Nine won Tuesday nationally for the first time since Week 7 (One Day Cricket Final) with a 29.5 per cent share, ahead of Seven on 29.4 and Ten on 20.6.
Nine was number one in Sydney with an impressive 31.7 per cent share, its best Tuesday result outside the Commonwealth Games and since February. Nine was 3.1 points ahead of Seven on 28.6 and 11.4 points in front of Ten (20.3). Torvill and Dean's Dancing On Ice again dazzled the audience last night with a peak audience of 1.696 million viewers tuning in to see the first elimination from the competition. The live episode attracted a solid 1.413 million viewers nationally. In Sydney, the ice spectacular was the second most-watched show of the night with 470,000 viewers.
"In Sydney, National Nine News was again the chosen news service taking third position with 448,000 viewers. Seven News followed on 425,000 viewers. Across the country, National Nine News was a Top 5 performer with 1.517 million viewers. A Current Affair also beat Today Tonight in Sydney again leading at 6.30pm with 422,000 viewers, ahead of Seven's 418,000."

There must be a question about whether Kylie Minogue is entitled to "national icon" status, after the distinct lack of interest shown by Australians in last night's discussion of her battle with breast cancer. Her audience of 1.1 million viewers, purchased for $300,000 by NIne, was 400,000 less than 'Cold Case' normally achieves in the timeslot.
The Kylie interview barely distracted from the Despos and the doctors, with Seven scoring a healthy 30.3 per cent of the prime time audience, while Nine got 25.8 per cent, Ten got 21.4, ABC got 16.3, and SBS got 6.2.

Nine came back to form on Sunday night, using its old favourites CSI, 60 Minutes and news to overwhelm a ratings recovery by Seven's talent quest It Takes Two (up 200,000 on the previous Sunday). Nine gained 30.7 per cent of the prime time audience, with Seven on 29.3, Ten on 19.8, ABC on 15.4, and SBS on 4.7.
Tonight we're in for a battle between the Desperate Housewives and Kylie MInogue, whose first interview since her cancer treatment has been bought by Nine and scheduled at the peak female viewers' time of the week.

TM, will Desperate Housewives beat Kylie? Do u think Seven will have an encore of desperate housewives? Will there be a Kylie encore? And who will win tonight?
do we really give a flying f#*(# about kylie? i mean hello there are other people who are going thru the same problems as what she has been thru although these people wouldnt have had the resourses that she has had because of her status. And also can we get off the sophie band wagon and let her live her life. Ok it is tragic what happened to this poor little girl but shouldnt we be letting her get on with life and treatments that she would have to go thru for many many years to come.
I am surprised that 60 minutes didnt pick up the tab for Kylie -- they usually go for these sorts of interviews.
a1, yes we do give a damn about Kylie, not only is she a much loved and respected celebrity throughout the world, she is also raising awareness for a disease that kills thousands of women every year. Her battle with cancer has inspired thousands of women to get checked, and potentially saved lives. Tell me how this is a bad thing?
Wish the interview wasn't on at the same time as DH though, last weeks episode was brilliant, and this one looks just as good.
a1 wrote: "...do we really give a flying f#*(# about kylie? i mean hello there are other people who are going thru the same problems as what she has been thru..."
Well, yes we do everyone knows Kylie and so it's only natural that many people would be interested in her plight, as opposed to some random, annonymouse person with the same illness. Did you know that since her diagnosis, the number of women seeking regular screening for breast cancer has greatly increased? That in itself has to be a good outcome, and her interview will no doubt reinforce that message.
Nine paid $300,000 for the Kylie interview.. so it better win 8.30 slot.
Lighten up a1, although you might not be a fan of Kylie, millions of people around the world are. She injects a bright ray of sunshine into an otherwise dull musical world, dominated by unoriginal rock ballads and hip hop hate. You only need to travel to the UK and Europe to fully appreciate how much our Kylie is loved and adored by a cross section of society. As Australians we should be proud that a young, independent woman has achieved such international success, and we should also be proud that this little Aussie has so far overcome cancer ... truly an inspiration to everyone. It was reported that when Kylie was originally diagnosed with breast cancer, there was a rise in the number of young women here and OS who had breast screenings. I'm sure that people living with breast cancer wish they had the same platform to inform other women, and are grateful that Kylie is standing up and creating awareness. Unlike Janette Howard.
Hey TM: I've been meaning to ask, I'm a watcher of Prison Break (only C7 show I watch on C7) and although most weeks bugged me with the amount of commerical breaks, last Wednesday seemed far worse than previous weeks - I counted them and at the 30 minute mark C7 were playing 11, yes that's right, ELEVEN commercials in a row every SIX minutes. Isn't there some law to prevent this sort of behaviour? It made me think that the show must really only be 30 mins long in the States and C7 just try to pad it out? Correct? Is Prison Break due to come back next year? Keep up the great work!
Tribal Mind replies: Due back on US TV in September with the title Prison Break: Manhunt
I sympathise with Kylie Minogue, and appreciate all she has done to raise awareness of breast cancer. But like A1, I don't particularly care about the woman herself and won't be watching nine tonight.
Nine has dallied too long in scheduling this. The press coverage of the interview has gone from whetting people's appetites to telling people everything of consequence she said. I expect nine to come second tonight.
as i stated she is not the only person to go thru this situation, look at belinda emmett -- hardly heard boo from her since her recovery although there has been some mag cover in recent weeks.
So what if Kylie is an icon she still is a human being and last i checked so was i. I wouldnt want my problems aired in public and she shouldnt either not if she had any dignity about herself.
Ok so she has raised awarness for people who may be unaware but isnt that what the cancer council and other organisations are there for -- raising awareness.
Kylie is a singer -- so sing.
It Takes Two will build further i feel because alot of the boring celebrities that the younger audience don't care about are gone. People are losing interest in Big Brother and people i think are getting over the Body Clock shows. Channel 10's Honey We're Killing the Kids didn't seem to do that well.
I have to say i was surprised to see Calendar Girls do that well
ITT has improved alot in its execution also. Grant and Teresa are far more likeable than they were at the begining. I think in light of Jamie and Sami on DOI they look a lot better. Still no Sonia and Daryl
Yeah lighten up a1. Since Kylie's diagnosis, she has remained out of the limelight. This is her first interview since her treatment. OK she has been in the media, but I'm sure a lot of fellow Aussies would like to know how she is recovering. I will definitely be watching it as I am not a DH fan. But I will keep an eye on the watch and switch over to Greys at 9.30pm.
Yay Top Gear back at 7:30pm tonight!
Dear Ch7
Those who know are aware that Ghost Whisperer's Season 1 finale was last week. So don't show an old episode this week and pretend that last week didn't happen! No Likey.
To a1. You really are a petulant little person aren't you. Through the misfortune of a survivor like Sophie Delezio there's been a great deal of good done for burns treatment. Isn't it nice to have a little ray of sunshine in the mad sad world we're living in today. If you don't want to watch, there's a funny rectangular slim box called a remote. Use it.
StewyC, a Prison Break episode without any commercial runs for 40 minutes.
in this day and age of vcr/dvr/dvd recorders does it really matter that kylie is going up against the housewives?
i, for one, will be watching both.
In ersponse to StewyC, Prison break was a good series, especially if you downloaded it without the ads. Each ep ran for around 43 minutes without ads, so if channel 7 managed to get in more than 17 minutes worth they must have ran overtime, which I guess is not unusual.
I can't see how they are going to milk another 20 odd episodes for a second series. The name of the series, Manhunt, gives away the fact that they obviously escape from the airport somehow.
How CSI manages to win it's time slot constantly is beyond me. How many times can people watch a show with the same plot line every time without getting bored of it?
to Bereft Skerrick last i checked this is a free country and i am able to voice MY opinion any way i damn well please. FYI i wont be watching dear old kylie but a DVD. Just as you have put your opinion on this blog.
and to the person that remarked about remote sod off !!!
As I read about Kylie's interview in the Sunday paper, there's no need to watch the interview on TV!
Anyway, DH is the only program on FTA that I actually watch instead of record (to watch with commercials erased). Won't miss it for anything!
VCR will record Law & Order SVU, and DVDR will record Four Corners.
May pop over to Ch 9 during ad breaks on DH (of which there are too damn many), but have found in the past that Ch 9 seems to run 99% ads, so don't expect to see much Kylie.
Re Sophie: poor kid, hope she has better luck in the future, but please, no more!
Thank you Daytona, last weeks blog on giving the discussion web link for Dancing on Ice. Not many comments yet a few not so flattering ones so if anyone wants to send there view go to this site.

Not to sure if the other networks have something similar maybe a TM Blogger will know.
Prison Break ,Greys anatomy,Ghost Whisperer,Desperate Housewives. What a load a crap,do you people really watch and enjoy this stuff.Oh man what is happening to this world what is happening to television.Have IQ's suddenly dropped by half since my arrival back on earth. My mission now is to produce better programming for the masses. No longer do I want to see people brainwashed into believing shows like ghostwhisperer and Supernatural are actually as good as it gets. You know what people, those shows are vehicles to take you to the next commercial, the producers and directors and T.v execs treat the audience like idiots and so they eventually become idiots,it's gotten so you can't tell a commercial from a episode of Desperate Houswives.Adds,Adds, Adds, please folks listen to me please don't watch those terrible dime a dozen American T.V shows, next time your watching just think to yourself "is this worth sitting through a gazzillion commercials for?could a prisoner be wearing that much makeup and have a just been to the Bahamas tan?or isn't this plot so ridiculous that I think I'm being played the fool?"
don't get me wrong i like lighthearted T.V as much as the next being but for the moment the best T.V is on ABC and SBS no sh**it's really incredible how much better it is it's really amazing how bad the american shows look compared to other countries yet if you watched and believed the Desperate Housewives hype you'd think it was the pinnacle of new Television or something.Really some people would buy a turd if it had the right dress on.
Tribal Mind replies: Dare I say, before one of the bloggers does, that I'm surprised such a superior being does not know how to spell the word "ads", which is short for advertisements, which does not contain two dds.
Could you please tell me how Comedy Inc. went last night.
TM replies: 673,000. Tomorrow's Tribal Mind column (already up for a sneak preview at www.smh.com.au/tribalmind) is about the most successful comedies this year, including comedy inc.
David, if you would be so kind....
Can you post the Swans figures from Sat, both National and NSW?
Still gutted.
Tribal Mind replies: Presumably that would be what OzTAM calls SATURDAY NIGHT AFL -- 916,000 across the capitals, Sydney 144,000, Melbourne 330,000.
Maybe, A1, you could be a spokesperson for the mentally ill?
Calendar Girls was a great laugh. I love this movie and to see it again was a hoot...as for Kylie tonight. I will be giving her a wide-berth in favor of DH.....although I must admit she does look a lot more creditable with her new locks.
If C9 paid Kylie $300K is she keeping the money or is it going to a breat cancer charity (as I think it should) I like Kylie (although not that much to watch the interview) but wouldn't like to think that she is personaly gaining from the interview. If anybody knows would love to know.
Thanks dab for the heads up about Stargate Atlantis!
And about par3182's comment - aren't there DVD recorders with dual tuners that allow you to record two channels at once?
If you really want to skip the ads, you can record them both then watch them later...
Timmy A...In defence of 9 (which will NEVER happen again), they have hardly dallied in scheduling the interview as it was only broadcast last night in the UK. Do you think it would have been wise of them to schedule it live at some time this morning?
A1, If Kylie had not agreed to do this interview, she would be pestered and pestered about it for years, i think she has done the right thing here. She will discuss it openly and honestly now, and then she will not need to discuss it again. She is not one to discuss her private life in interviews, so this is obviously something she has to do to get the press off her back. Good on her!
jesse, are you wearing a dress?
I agree that the ratings for ITT will continue to improve over the coming weeks. The remaining couples are very good (OK, Guy is carrying Sarah Ryan), and we'll be getting more performances like Ross Wilson and Dave Gleeson's duet, which was great.
Tribal Mind replies: Dare I say, before one of the bloggers does, that I'm surprised such a superior being does not know how to spell the word "ads", which is short for advertisements, which does not contain two dds."
TM, I'm more concerned by this sentence .... "Have IQ's suddenly dropped by half since my arrival back on earth."
We're either dealing with L Ron Hubbard, ET or Jesus. Not sure which is preferable, but hopefully the second coming will happen during an ad(d) break.
Such negativity today! Who knew Kylie Minogue could polarise opinion so much! My advice - if you don't like, don't watch. I'm not saying not to share your opinion, but we can still be decent human beings while we're doing it, and putting down a little girl who is a burns victim, or anyone who is suffering from a disease like cancer, is not being a decent human being. If Sophie's family gets paid money for spending half an hour on camera, then dammit, they should be able to do so, God only knows how much they have had to shell out. As for the Kylie interview, she has a lot of fans, she also has photographers following her every day, by doing one interview, she gets rid of the 'exclusivity' and can do it in her own way, when she is ready. I seriously doubt she did it for the money, she's got more than enough. And i'm pretty certain when channel nine paid for the rights, they would have been told that they couldn't play it before it aired in Britain, which was last night (early morning, our time), so this was their first opportunity to air it.
Please, everyone, a little bit of positivity tomorrow! Slagging off cancer patients and burns victims is vicious to say the least, and not in the true spirit of TM, which is to slag off reality tv, channel 7/9 (depending on which way you part your hair) and basically discussing television in a light hearted and amusing way.
Having been away a while, I return to find that jesse has put the trash out and whoops it was his/her opinion that filled the bin. LOVED tubbyk's comment and the divine subtlety of damiens short sharp shot.
However, onto more pertinant matters, with Gian Rooneys broken leg, Michael Slaters ripped hand and Annalise's busted rib, there won't be any point to sms or phone votes for your favourite stars in Dancing On Ice. The power of prayer would appear to offer a much better opportunity with the last one to die being awarded the winners blood stained yellow jersey.
I would imagine the insurance bill facing Nine would be incalculable if they ever considered a second series of this program. It has become the nearest thing to the Gladiators arena with the life and death struggle far closer to a reality than any one dreamed.
I almost feel sorry for Nine, it was a good idea gone pear shaped - and I bet Seven are loving every excrutiating minute of this disaster.
i was just wondering how well close to home rated this week?
Tribal Mind replies: 778,000 last night.
Is miso_kool gutted because the swans got a mere 144,000 viewers in Sydney?Come to think of it that is pretty pathetic isn't it.
OK I'm not slagging off Kylie - I dont really have an opinion on her either way. BUt last night during DH ad-breaks I switched over to her interview - and I have to say it was the most insipid boring interview I have ever watched (bits of) in a while! I mean - I do feel bad for her, but I found her sentences disjointed, unexpressive, incomplete...hard to follow. Half the time the interviewer had to finish them for her because Kylie lacked the words (or ability). For a professional performer, one would expect a bit more surely! Yes I admire her for what she's been through - but I was very much surprised. Will be very interesting to see how it rates. What did others think?
In absolute stark contrast and after being bored stupid by Kylie's "you know.... ummm.... and then I... yeah!" sentences, I switched to Enough Rope where Denton was interviewing Chrissy Amphlete (spelling?) from the Divynals (spelling again?). Now there was a great and much more interesting interview subject. Recovering aloholic, crazy life experiences, articulate, heartfelt, and real. Kylie's interview was pink, fluffy, sparkly, and in my opinion, a bit self-centred. For those that missed Enough Rope for Kylie, you guys missed out.
oh S**T. I was away last week and have just realised I missed Prison Break. Must download, must download....
But in terms of all the ads, I never used to watch it. I used to tape and watch the next night. There are some programs that are particularly bad with advertisements and Prison Break seemed to be one of them. Not sure why- maybe the ads were all centred in the middle and not spread out? But whatever, it was too painful to watch and I'd rather tape and fast forward.
bobmar28, no i think he is gutted due to their loss. duh
macca, Channel 9 paid Sky (Britain) for the Australian rights to the interview, not Kylie.
I think we are missing the point, the Kylie interview was bad purely for the wannabe brittany interviewer who hyped up breaks to commercials with comments like - next we ask kylie about her darkest day, what was it like having your hair fall out. Come on, for a first interview you would think they would get a credible interviewer
'Law and Order: SVU' did well, but will it
maintain that next week when the despos (so funny - that name that is, not the show) and 'cold case' are against it?
PS, this is not rhetorical.
I wasn't particularly interested in seeing the Kylie interview even though I am a fan of her music. The highlights had already been shown on various news programs and that was enough for me. Ch 9 should stop wasting money on risky one-off interviews and invest in some decent Aussie drama. And Despos is back in form, so it's not worth missing for anything.
David, can we have an update to the Tribal Mind link? I noticed a few others have had trouble finding the latest blog too. The blogs have been updated, but the links frrom the Herald page to Tribal Mind haven't been. So we still see the old headlines: The ratings race: a bit of biffo, Nine's new shows, What makes a bestseller, Record tv audience for SBS, Nine wins the night. Thanks.
Tribal Mind eplies: I have passed your request on to the technoboffins. They want to know what "page" your link is from. If you go to www.smh.com.au/tribalmind, that is up to date. You must be coming from somewhere else.
What are the figures for Top Gear? From what I know it's rated as the most downloaded show in the world.
Tribal Mind replies: Last night 495,000 - less than Mythbusters but good for SBS.
This year I've been enjoying "Insiders", Sunday mornings on ABC.
Does it rate?
For those criticising a1 re: comments on Kylie & Sophie, I tend to agree with a1.
I'm not sure how it helps us to infiltrate the lives of people we only know from television. It doesn't make us better people. It makes us voyeurs.
We can do all the rationalising in the world as to why we watch but we'd be far better off connecting with our family and friends and helping them in their times of distress.
Tribal Mind replies: No it doesn't rate -- 200,000 viewers.
Thanks Arrested Development - great stuff - see you around, eh?
Gonna ignore bobma28 trolling. Do not feed the thugby trolls, they'll club you and eat your bone.
However it is nice to note that the Sydney Swans out rated the Wallabies on Sat night. Get in.
Hi TM
How long do you think Ch9 will stick with DOI?? Just about all of their "celebrities" have injured themselves now - Giann Rooney broke her leg! Surely the ratings and the injuries stacking up must make Eddie Everywhere a bit anxious!
It looks like people are finally starting to realise that Whats Good For You is the biggest load of patronising crap!
Close to Home did dreadfully last night!
Greys is doing well but i wonder whether it will be able to fill the 8:30 slot well enough when Desperate is finished soon. 9 has obviously been trying to save up new eps of Cold Case.
What is everyones predictions for DOI tonight. I reckon it will be 1.29million
I am not at all surprised how close ACA and Today Tonight rated last night - I switched between the two and realised they both ran three identical stories.
Both ran a story on the kylie interview, both ran a story on a woman who was looking for full time work (and was prepared to stand on a street to get it) and both ran the jeff fenech yarn (claiming I might add to have 'exclusive footage' of fenech shoplifting).
These two shows claim to be current affairs but they're effectively now the same show at the same time on two different channels.
Channel Nine as it did with 'The Today Show' has gone and copied Today Tonight by running short/loud and often overhyped stories.
I thought ACA was hoping to do less caryard/neighbourhood mums crap and maybe more live interviews/debates etc.
I remember the days when Jana Wendt was hosting ACA and they would have live interesting debates in the studio with people of interest - the show was distinctly its own.
ACA and Today Tonight have become a parody of what the ABCs Frontline always considered them to be - pathetic replicas of each other with no originality.
I'm not surprised the Kylie Interview didn't rate that well. Traditionally, Kylie specials on Aussie TV haven't rated. I don't know why this is!
I didn't see all the interview, but I have to agree that the female English interviewer was extremely wooden, to say the least! Kylie I thought did well(but being a Kylie fan, I guess I'm biased).
DOI: I bet it will lose a good proportion of the 1.6 million who tuned in last week, including myself. I'd expect Border Security to get well over 2 million viewers nationally tonight.
Big Brother: does anyone care anymore? I think this year's finale will be the lowest rating one ever for Ten.
David, a question for you: how well is Bleak House rating on Sunday nights? Gillian Anderson is absolutely captivating in her new role.
And......will Nine ever show the next series of Nip Tuck?
Tribal Mind: BH 790,000.
I love both the 7:30 report and Lateline for their professionalism and in-depth reporting, however, lately I'm getting increasingly frustrated with their opening sequence. The program starts and you have about five minutes worth of preview footage on what's to come! By the time you've seen the prologue, there is almost no need to actually watch the program - you know what's in it already!
This type of thing must have crept in from the commercial networks when they air 30 min programs over a whole hour, which they pad out with endless previews of what's coming up after the break and then when they do come back from the break, they spend more time reviewing what happened before the break! Urghhh! And even during the program itself, they start one story thread, then before completing it, start another, then recap the first and continue, etc, etc.
Do the networks never tire of driving away their viewers?
Must say last nights Arrested Development was unbelievably good. My favourite all time show gone...
Bobmar28 is completely obsessed with the 'Swans'. I think everybody understands that you say you don't like AFL.
Big deal - if you don't like it - stop talking about it.
Tribal Mind replies: I have passed your request on to the technoboffins. They want to know what "page" your link is from. If you go to www.smh.com.au/tribalmind, that is up to date. You must be coming from somewhere else."
David: Thanks,I will store that webaddress in my favourites. However this has been happening when I'm entering from smh.com.au, then selecting Entertainment, then TV & Radio, then Tribal Mind. This takes me to the top weekly headlines, which haven't been updated. eg. The ratings race: a bit of biffo, Nine's new shows etc... If I select one of those it either takes me to the specific story shown or the Entertainment Blog headlines.
I hope that helps.
"Tribal Mind eplies: I have passed your request on to the technoboffins. They want to know what "page" your link is from. If you go to www.smh.com.au/tribalmind, that is up to date. You must be coming from somewhere else."
I have the same problem as J-Bar. From SMH.com, if you select the 'entertainment' menu at the top and then 'tv & radio' then click on the 'tribal mind' link, it takes you to a bunch of out-dated pages.
I didn't know about the link www.smh.com.au/tribalmind until you mentioned it just now... where is this address linked from within smh.com?
thanks!
Tribal Mind replies: We like to retain our independence.
Is there anyone else out there who doesn't think that last weeks lukewarm reception of DOI and this weeks 'accidents' are a coincidence?
Re tribal Mind Blog Link: The link is still the "Record numbers for SBS" one, being about 4 links down. Clicking on the top highlighted link gets you to an old blog, that then redirects you to a not so old blog, but not this one. I have been a reader of this Blog since it started and it's always had a web of misleading links. Worth the trouble though.
I find this link is usually up to date with the right TM links:
http://blogs.smh.com.au/entertainment/archives/the_tribal_mind/index.html
Tonight for the first time in months I'm going to make a special effort to watch the Simpsons. I enjoy the concept of Border Security but totally bugged by the repetition, i.e. the lead-up, the tension, the suspense, the what-ifs, the re-introduction for those who weren't watching earlier, the re-statement of what the potential penalties might be, the conclusion, etc etc!!
Aww, leave Kat Deeley alone. She took over my barmaid job in London when I moved on about ten years ago, and then she used to serve me beers in between her modelling assignments. She might not be a brilliant interviewer ( more of a safe bet not to ask any difficult questions), but she's a very very nice person who has done extremely well on uk tv and has remained down to earth despite her fame over there.
Mind you, having said that, I didn't bother to watch the interview. Towely was on South Park, making it must-see tv. Give me Towely over Kylie any day.
Ah, the outdated link (from Entertainment - TV & Radio) takes people to http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/tv-radio/tribal-mind/
Which is sadly out of date! Unless it's got some sort of other criteria that the usual Tribal Mind page?
Tribal Mind replies: I do not understand what Fairfax is doing there. Probably a way to prove nobody is reading the blog.
So why the low numbers for Kylie last night? Perhaps at last it's becoming obvious that Australians do not share the same fixation of celebrity status, as do the US and UK.
Love her or hate her, Kylie is a huge act in Europe, and especially the UK. Last nights interview probably enjoyed greater success in those markets than it did in Australia.
Previous Australian concert tours by Kylie have attracted huge legions of fans. Remember, Kylie sold more concerts in Sydney than rock legends AcDc on their last tour. The recently postponed Kylie tour will no doubt draw big numbers when it hits the road later this year.
If Kylie Minogue used her celebrity status to access international television, and raise the profile of breast cancer in many communities, by speaking of her breast cancer experience, then she succeded.
Having said that, it appears a short commercial length promo may assist a cause (Yul Brynner "Just don't smoke"), while an extended format does not make compelling television in this country, regardless of your celebrity status.
Can you tell me what the figures were for andrew dentons interview with chrissie amphlett. excellent interview!!
Tribal Mind replies: 1.003 million.
Hey TM, was just wondering what the numbers were for Top Gear last night, great show well worth the watch.
It's good to see Earl's number going up as no doubt word of mouth gets around, just wish they would show it in order.
Tribal Mind replies: See below. It would be time-saving for all concerned if people sending questions to this blog would first read the rest of the blog.
I go into this blog from the home page of SMH. They have a section marked 'All our blogs' and from there into Tribal Mind. The latest one is always on top. DH and GA were both great last night. Did anyone catch in full what McDreamy said to his wife right at the end in the bar? I was so caught up with him crying I forgot to listen properly. Thanks in advance
For everyone asking about links to this page, you could just go to "favourites" in the top menu and add the site to your favourites list. I've done that and whenever I click on the link, it always sends me to the latest updated version.
TM, when the hell is that moronic conga-line of populist suckholes at channel 9 gonna stick the sixth season of the Sopranos on? Its already finished in the U.S. and we aint got it yet!
Hope my distaste for Ricky Gervais - I am the only soul in this lifetime who can't dig The Office - will not prevent me from enjoying tonight's Simpsons
Also looking forward to White Terror on SBS's The Cutting Edge - no watching you Cronulla residents, don't want you getting any more ideas.
Me, I just laughing at rednecks....
Im still loving this blog very interesting reading.
I am curious if anyone watched
Anatomy for Beginners last night at 10:40pm on SBS.
During each episode, Professor Gunther von Hagens carries out a human dissection and focuses on a different set of anatomical systems: movement, circulation, digestion and reproduction. It was very Very interseting, but freaky at the same time.
How did it rate?
Im a huge top gear fan and mythbusters fan, but like alot of people here i download them because Iam inpaitent and rather watch the shows when i want to. Same with most of my tv shows. I am happy that 7 showed the entire season 3 of Arrested Development, even if it was on at a bad time, as most other television stations (mostly 9 or 10) would just stoped showing it. Maybe sumone who works for 7 likes it.
Good job on the blog, keep up the good work. Also How many books have you written? i might buy one or two as a thank you :)
TM, re: your response to Jesse... you rule!
And for the last blog of the ratings race - thanks for explaining that you change the names, :)
btw, I've read now and on previous occasions something on channel nine about "biffo" what is it?/who is it?
Oh and Jane, He said somethning like: Christmas is a time to spend with people you love....(pause) Meredith wasn't a fling, she wasn't revenge (long pause) I fell in love with her
Chris wrote: "I am curious if anyone watched Anatomy for Beginners last night at 10:40pm on SBS".
Yes, I watched it - it was compelling viewing. Doesn't Gunther seem perfectly suited for the job? He looks scarier than Freddie Kruger and just as handy with a blade! Also, I hope that the show's producers aren't sexist and therefore have a female live model on next week! ;)
Everyone has posted their views why Kylie didn't do as well as everyone thought - so here's my 2 cents;-
1. Many of us saw the best bits on the news or on radio earlier in the day - in some cases repeated ad nauseam so by 8.35 we were so over it.
2. Kylie has had cancer for over a year now - and the women's mags have gone overboard with the story for just as long. Again - many of us are over it by now.
3. Kylie spends 99% of her time overseas and now has a deliciously pom accent - so many of us can't relate to her as OUR kylie anymore. Yep it is tall poppy syndrome i guess - just a theory mind you!
4. Kat Deeley - who? Her questions were so wooden and boring. I've seen an interview she did with Molly Meldrum and the 2 were so relaxed and Molly - in a tongue-tied mumbly sort of way - got her to open up on SO MANY issues it was riveting viewing. I am biased - i like Molly AND Kylie.
5. NINE was promoting it as the if it was an EVENT - when in fact it was just a - much belated - interview with one of Australia's favourite singers who was recovering from cancer.
6. Kylie was allegedly paid $300,000 for the interview. Don't get me wrong - if Eddie wants to keep opening his chequebook for interviews - while at the same time sacking staff to cut costs (huh???) then so be it. However i can't recall reading anywhere that the money was going to cancer charities or the like. If it is - i apologise profusely. However many of us working slobs - may be resentful to a multi-millionaress pocketing even more money for "her" story.
Don't get me wrong - I am a Kylie fan - some of the greatest pop music ever! - but i didn't watch it cos i was over it - and Law & Order SVU was a ripper episode.
I love Kylie's music and I love Kylie but I still didn't watch. I just didn't think I was going to learn anything from it. Now if Andrew Denton had interviewed Kylie, I would have been there. Or perhaps True Stories. At least then we might drill beyond the PR spin.
Re: Enough Rope/Kylie interviews
I didn't see the Kylie einterview, I watched a bit of DH and then Enough Rope.
But I've seen Andrew Denton interviewed before and he said that he thought Kylie was usually a pretty guarded interviewee, not forthcoming (this was when asked what people he wouldn't interview on Enough Rope), though "perhaps what has happened to her i.e. breast cancer may have changed that". Listening to some comments here it sounds like she wasn't that forthcoming on Nine either.
In Greys, Dreamy said to his wife that Meredith was not just a fling, that he loved her and just because I chose to stay with you, doesn't mean those feelings will just go away.
Pretty tough to hear on Xmas for Addison and explained the grumpy mood he was in all episode.
Love Greys, really genuinely funny (but NOT a comedy - don't you hate when Desp HW and shows like ally mcbeal win awards in comedy category's). Like the George and Izzy character's the best. Mededith is a whiner, but hat is her job in the show.

It is a very good and comprehensive website on the media, and you can contribute to one of the many forums. Go there today!
Desperate Housewives was brilliant last night and deserved its win. I think one of the reasons people didn't tune in to see Kylie was that they'd already seen a fair chunk of it on the news and current affairs shows and decided they'd seen enough. Today Tonight ran quite a bit of it on Monday in an obvious attempt to steal Nine's thunder, and it worked!
As for Dancing On Ice, I think it's time Eddie straps on the skates. He's on thin ice as it is, so why not make it literal!
Jane - (further to Abi's post) he then went on to say that [the love he had for Meredith] didn't go away just because he chose to be with her (the wife).
Adam said"I think everyone understands that you say you don't like the AFL".I don't remember saying that. Also "if you don't like something don't talk about it"....Are you serious? It seems to me that most people commenting on this blog don't like channel nine and they talk about nothing else.
What did Saturday Nights Rugby Test Australia v South Africa, rate on Channel 7 ?
What figures did the Saturday NRL 5:30, 7:30 & 9:30 get on Fox Sports ?
Thanks
Tribal Mind replies: Covered in last week's ratings blog. Pay figures not available.
to ange & bettestreep here here, your comments i totally agree with. I think that the points that you raise bettestreep are what a1 was trying to point out -- however you do such a better job of it. I too like some of kylies music and believe that she should stick to music if she so wishes or just live her life as she sees fit. but not to go running to the mass media before hand.
Australia has been inundated with these sorts of things in the past few months, the plight of the miners, kylie, to name afew.
I am really fed up with reality tv and apart from DWTS i wont watch any other show. reality tv and some current affairs shows have run their term.
Australia has potiential to produce good series in the past so why not encourage to get some more new and potientially goods series???
Perhaps other bloggers would be interested to comment.
Further to NK's suggestion in firefox you can save the live bookmark (click on the little orange square that appears in the address bar and select any of the available options), which will give you an updating list of all the blog entries in your bookmark menu. So not only will you always be able to find the blog, you'll also be able to, find the current entry and you'll know when it been updated as it will move to the top of the list.
Did not watch the Kylie interview due to my ongoing shock that someone that cannot act, cannot hold a note and has an attrocious Elle-like trans atlantic accent can have an ongoing successful career. There are better singers in your local that Kylie. Sad that she got cancer but very few people have the resources to get the treatment she can. I have absolutely nothing against her personally, I am just totally gobsmacked at her ongoing popularity. I did have a major crush on Danni 20 years ago though so maybe it is just jealousy that the wrong Minogue is up there.... well OK not really, they should both be in RSL-land to be honest with Jason and the other Neighbour's try hards.
Does this mean Channel 9 will can 'Dancing on Ice'?
How did Channel 9 win the night? It only had 5 of the top 15?
Tribal Mind replies: No, that would be too embarrassing. Nine had bigger audience later in the night (prime time goes until midnight)
After it was delayed for a week, I was looking forward to the Ricky Gervais written episode of the Simpsons last night. He is obviously a talented man having written and starred in BBC's The Office, but bloody hell what a stinker! I first saw The Simpsons when they were first on the Tracy Ullman show all those years ago and am a long time fan but honestly the show has been on the decline for quite some time. Talk about a show 'jumping the shark'! I mean did anyone laugh at anything in that show last night?
Thankfully my VCR cut off before I was inflicted with the truly awful Wedge. How that rated 1 million last night still amazes me!
How does Ch 7 manage to come second on percentages when they had the top rating program in almost every timeslot? Makes me think that the way the ratings are measured is dodgy. Ch 9 must have boosted their percentage after 10.30pm. It seems that the networks can manipulate the percentages for advertisers, by showing a strong program after 10.30pm even if they've shown rubbish in prime time. Maybe the percentages should be taken for prime time only 6pm to 10.30pm ratehr than 6pm to 12midnight.
Tribal Mind replies: Channel Ten defines prime time as 6pm to 10.30 pm, but Seven's definition goes till midnight, causing it to come second in this case.
TM - please enlighten us with your wisdom on how the hell 9 won the night when it lost to 7 on pretty much every time slot (except 7 - 7:30 but not by much) before 9:30pm.
Tribal Mind replies: Apparently Nine won every timeslot after 9.30pm. If prime time was defined as 6pm to 10.30pm, the shares last night would have been Seven: 30.3% Nine: 29.8% Ten: 20.0% ABC: 14.8% SBS: 5.1%. Seven must be kicking itself for repeating Ghost Whisperer.
How did DOI do in the final hour?
Thanks.
Tribal Mind replies: Don't know, and Nine is unlikely to tell us.
The Wedge = 1 million. 1 million bogans who have probably never seen Little Britain or think that Kath and Kim is a serious Drama.
How that show is considered funny is beyond me.
It reminds me of that 7 show that was canned earlier in the year.
Cringe!
RE: Nine had bigger audience later in the night (prime time goes until midnight) Posted by: William at July 19, 2006 10:36 AM and others, being a big fan of Mile High, Seven might have lost a few fans by moving Mile High from 11pm to 11.30pm, as well as repeating Ghost Whisperer. Get your act together Seven, Prime time finishes at 12 midnight, every show counts! Also, RE: Border Security mindless repetition Posted by: kj at July 18, 2006 01:10 PM, i totally agreed. I counted there were only 3 stories last night, and the show could have been presented in a normal sequence without the mindless boring repetition and the show would probably finish in 12-15 minutes rather than 35 minutes! Seven needs to think carefully before they butcher this show by next year! Put more stories in a 35 minute show than to piss off audience. Sounds easy but when you have idiotic producer aiming to squeeze more dollars out of each show, the end result is shorter life span rather than longevity for the show!
Who will win the week?
Tribal Mind replies: Looks like Seven at this point, but it will be close.
Badsax, you're so right about Kylie's lack of singing talent. I don't know if this is still done, but in the past when she recorded an album the producers would very subtly layer her vocals with those of a much more capable backing singer, giving them more body.
The US have their Press Tour on at the moment, where the networks showcase their programs for this season and answer questions from the journalists. Mike Ausiello usually gives a very entertaining overview of the news coming out of this junket and you can check out his blog here ....

As regular watchers of Mile High, it was only by chance that we found it at 11:30pm last night. After some way stupid magic guy who wanted to set himself on fire for his mothers' birthday. While channel flicking I noticed that 1/2 hour of wacky hijinks had ended and Mile High was starting.
Which means that I spent a small part of that 11-11:30pm slot listening to the building site ... erm I mean butchers shop ... wait a moment, it was Penn and Teller dropping blue language with a show called Bullsh*t. GAH. OK, so the premise was interesting, especially the bit whhere they were snarking about the guy who thought that Hilary Clinton is the lesbian antichrist. But I'm surprised that wholesome Eddie Everywhere shows this when BB is no longer anywhere near blue, but a nice shade of beige.
Seven did repeat Ghost Whisperer, but Nine repeated CSI, probably for the third time. I can't see how it rates so well. TM - Does Foreign Correspondent rate well (in ABC terms)? I am a recent convert to that show once Tuesday nights got boring.
I won't say anything more on The Wedge. I have personally heard no one say anything good about it. I just don't know who is watching it or why. Worst comedy show ever.
Hello David
Can you shed any light on Seven's planned quiz show? Mark Beretta has been tapped to be the host. I think that's why they axed Wheel of Fortune - to free up $$$ for this show. Perhaps they're hoping it will be their "Millionaire-Beater"?
Does anyone else have any info? Thanks heaps
Enough of the Kylie criticism!
This is a blog related to discussion of TV, not another Kylie forum. There are plenty of other sites where one can debate whether or not Kylie has talent etc.
I predicted DOI would lose about 200,000 viewers. The show is nothing more than a ripoff of DWTS, although Jamie Durie is a tad less nauseating than Daryl Somers.
Seven would win the ratings after 9.30 PM on Tuesday nights if they had a better offering than the awful Ghost Whisperer - why not move Boston Legal to Tuesday nights?
Ten must be disappointed with Big Brother's declining ratings - no surprise they are already heavily promoting the next series of Idol.
Damn, I missed Mile High last night - Seven really should move it to an earlier timeslot.
Forget the BB turkey Slapping incident, the biggest scandal in 2006 involves Ridge raping Brooke on Bold & Beautiful.. not a word from rodent & Co.
TM: Thanks for the book, Great reading.
miso_kool said: "Hope my distaste for Ricky Gervais - I am the only soul in this lifetime who can't dig The Office - will not prevent me from enjoying tonight's Simpsons"
Ah, I couldn't get into The Office either! I think it was that bit too close to the bone... Made me more uncomfortable than amused.
I did enjoy his episode of The Simpsons - it wasn't a laff-fest like classic episodes, but his view of the Fox studios was brilliant.
How on earth does Fox cope with being lampooned so much by Groening (and Gervais)?
Ozboy1999 says: being a big fan of Mile High, Seven might have lost a few fans by moving Mile High from 11pm to 11.30pm, as well as repeating Ghost Whisperer. Get your act together Seven, Prime time finishes at 12 midnight, every show counts!
I agree with you. Although Seven again has the top rating show for the week (Border Security), it must be concerned with the performance of its programs after 9.30pm. It must have some decent programs to people staying up late to watch.
Hello fellow square eyers... Just wondering if anyone can tell me when the Miss Universe pagent is going to be televised. If I recall correctly - its normally on a Sunday on channel 9...?
Thanks in advance
*Good last episode of Grumpy Old Women last night on ABC. Well, another series of a show that I like has ended. Why do all the ones I like finish so early, while all the shows I hate go on forever? All I can see on the horizon are dreadfull reality/ gameshows on the commercial networks.
*C7 and C9 seem to be guilty of a lot of shameless self promotion lately on their Sunrise/Today, ACA/TT and even bloody news service. Am I the only one that finds this act offensive and respond by switching off the tube and returning to the sanctuary of the PC?
*BorderSecurity is so addictive, but it is the same thing every week. A ethnic pretending not to speak English trying to bring in dodgy undeclared items, drug mules, illegal fishing, sus packages and the odd story of a person that might or might not be granted entry to Oz because of Visa/Crim History/Shifty appearance. All the same, its good to see that it is beating DOI. What an expensive mistake.
Well looks like Ive answered my own question here in regard to when we can see the delightful Erin McNaught (sic) strutting her stuff for the title of 2006 Ms Universe its on Channel 7 (the best) on Tuesday night 9:30pm, hosted by our own J-Hawko. Ignore my last comment about channel 9 having had it previously because just like everything else they do theyve screwed this up too. Ha ha ha Ch 9 too funny..
Thanks to Abi, Chris and Kelli M for their answer on GA. Wish I had taped it so I could watch over and over.
Such a great forum, TM, for us TV stats fans.
Cheers
Forget the BB turkey slap, never mind Ridge’s ‘Ho’ slap of Brooke, feast your eyes upon the weekly turkey slap that is Dancing on Ice – and I use the word “Turkey” in its truest channel nine sense here. Did somebody let wind? What stinks? Pwwoooarrr even the “celebrities” smell…… gag gag
Miss Universe will be on Channel Seven at 9.30pm on July 25. A short intro from Jennifer Hawkins will precede it.
Hi Fielding - this gives me away but listen to the Jason & Kylie duet, "Hand on your heart" for some truly layered work, not human layers but layers all the same! The last straw in my tortured Kylie silence was during a tormented relationship with a Kylie fan when I had to endure her singing "Should I stay or should I go" in some special or other.... the pop princess went, almost, punk.... and to calm Evan down, lets not go into whether Kylie needs to be bagged, The Clash is punk or we are in the wrong blog.
The best viewing all week was the dissection of the human specimen on SBS, it was truly interesting and surprisingly understandable for the average Kylie fan..... and me... Boston Legal grabs me totally due to James Spader, silly as the character is. Great to see Scrubs at 11:00am again also, whatever that show that it replaced was, with the John Cusack clone, was truly awful. Hey, late sleeping people have a right to reasonable viewing also....!
Just wanted to say Tri
TM any idea as to what SBS has done with Mythbusters? Not listed for tonight, last Monday it was replaced by the World Cup replay. Top Gear though is back on tonight. For all you Stargate Atlantis fans out there season 3 has just started airing in the US whilst we are still to see season 2
