The Seinfeld Curse seems to have struck again. Despite positive pre-publicity, the latest sitcom from Julia Louis-Dreyfus (the old Elaine) tanked last night. The New Adventures of Old Christine was the number 14 most watched show of Thursday, with 1.08 million viewers in the mainland capitals.
It didn't even hold the 1.15 million who watched Two and Half Men, the sitcom that preceded it at 8.30, and it took no viewers from Lost, which was a clips collection. Even with the modest performance of its two comedies, Nine won the night and looks like winning the week. Prime time audience shares so far: Nine 29.8 per cent; Seven 28.2; Ten 22.1; ABC 14.4; SBS 5.4.
One of our bloggers, below, argues that commercial television is designed for brain dead suckers, and gets intelligent critical thinkers only by accident. You may care to join that discussion.

Updated Thursday July 6 Until Wednesday evening, Channel Seven was beating everybody in the ratings for the week. Then it chose not to compete with brawny boys bashing into each other, and let Channel Nine kick a goal. Nine won Wednesday with a prime time audience share of 38.9 per cent, while Seven got 24.8, Ten got 18.4, ABC got 13.4 and SBS got 4.5. And Nine is now ahead for the week.

It was a typical quiet Tuesday night on the box, dominated by Channel Seven's methodical customs officers and crisis-crossed medicos. Seven got 32.3 per cent of the prime time audience, while Nine got 25.6, Ten got 21.3, ABC got 15.2 and SBS got 5.6. Next Tuesday will be a litle different, when Nine takes on Seven with slip-sliding celebrities.

The line of the night was "You broke his penis" and it didn't come from Big Brother. Nor did "She's a lust trigger". The curiosity about sex-obsessed housemates lasted just one day, and then viewers turned their attention to sex-obsessed housewives and sex-obsessed doctors. Thank God the politicians don't know what's on Channel Seven between 8.30pm and 10.30pm on Monday or they'd be calling for a trade embargo on American cultural imports.
Channel Seven won the night with a prime time audience share of 29.7 per cent, while Nine got 27.9 per cent. Ten got its usual 20.6, the ABC got 15.2 (thanks to Australian Story, with 1.1 million viewers) and SBS got 6.6 per cent (thanks to Mythbusters, with 738,000).
And this remark from the Australian Democrat Senator Andrew Bartlett offers a useful perspective on the Big Brother hysteria: "If anyone in the Big Brother house broke the law then it can be dealt with by the legal system. Attempting to force a television show off the air because of an incident that wasn't even screened is an excessive intrusion into the lives of Australians by moralising, preaching politicians."

Of course, Channel Ten didn't manufacture the publicity it got on Sunday about the premature expulsion of two harassers from the Big Brother house. Ten would have preferred that the whole thing didn't happen. But it certainly found a silver lining in the black clouds.
By showing more than two hours of Big Brother on Sunday night, Ten gained a prime time audience share of 27.5 per cent, while Channel Nine, which usually wins Sundays, got 26.5 per cent, Seven got 25.4, the ABC got 15.6 and SBS got 5.0.

All the free publicity last week didn't help Channel Nine. Channel Seven won the week with a prime time audience share of 28.8 per cent, while Nine got 27.6 per cent, Ten got 21.6, the ABC got 15.7 and SBS got 6.3.
You'd imagine a few people might have tuned in out of curiosity to see Jessica Rowe on Today, but its Thursday audience of 254,000 viewers in the mainland capitals dropped to 218,000 on Friday, while its competitor, Sunrise, got 448,000 on Thursday and 447,000 on Friday.
The big trend of the moment is the sitcom revival, or should we call it the trailer-trash-led recovery. The success of Seven's My Name is Earl will make Nine optimistic about its new Thursday sitcom The New Adventures of Old Christine. But even if Christine flops, Nine will probably win the week, since Ten and Seven have both wimped out of competing against the State of Origin game on Wednesday night (no House, no Prison Break), and Thursday's episode of Lost is just a collecton of old clips.
Go here to read discussion of Big Brother's involuntary expulsions.

The Bill got 1.03 million on Saturday and 1.03 million on Tuesday. Clearly a British cop soap revival is under way, in addition to the sitcom revival.
Revised figures for the Australia-Italy match have put it among the most watched shows of all time, which you can find by clicking here.
The ratings race is updated every week day as an unpaid service for readers of David Dale's Tribal Mind column, published each Tuesday in The Sydney Morning Herald. For past columns, go to www.smh.com.au/tribalmind. David Dale is the author of Who We Are - A Miscellany of the new Australia (Allen and Unwin).
One thing stands out with the McGuire fiasco. That is you cannot have a TV CEO who is confused as to whether he is an onscreen personality or a behind the scenes manager. Not even Eddie everywhere can be everything.
In todays Sun Herald... Mr McGuire said: "We are in a strong position to win the ratings this week, our news ratings are very strong and that's all we are worried about.
Oops - wrong on both counts Eddy!
what were the ratings for the networks for fri/sat nights? how did "high school musical / grease" combo go? was it enough to beat off 9's last minute scheduling of a sat night CSI?
Tribal Mind replies: HSM got 1.22m and G got 1.03m , which were enough to get Seven over the line for the week. What time was CSI on? It does not appear on OzTAM's ratings chart for last night.
I believe that I've woken up in bizarro world. Eddie Mcguire running what used to be the premier tv network in the country. CH10 running soft-core porn in prime time and sexual assaults late at night live.
Eddie sacking or boning people left and right while taking a group of AFL and Leaguies to Germany to host and talk about the Soccer world Cup.
Mel and Koch dominating breakfast, the world has gone stark raving MAD, or I have, I'm not sure about anything anymore.
Tribal Mind replies: To be perfectly fair, Channel Ten did not show any sexual assault on TV. The activities were visible on the live internet stream.
CSI was on at 9.25 last night in Bris...I only found it as I flicked across during a commercial break..wimbledon was on at 10.25
Tribal Mind replies: Then it's unlikely to have made much difference to Nine's results.
It seems the Eddie budget cuts have started with some on-air talent. The Rugby league footy show usually has 5 panelists-today they are down to 3. What happenned to Gus Gould?
After much pressure I reluctantly allowed my 13 year old daughter and 10 year old son to watch BB's Friday Night Live. I have never been a fan of this moronic form of entertainment and Friday night's fiasco confirmed my beliefs as correct. It seemed that every second word uttered by a housemate had to be 'beeped' out so that most of the show appeared to be one long continuous beep. We eventually turned it off, disgusted that Channel 10 and anybody else can claim that these morons represent reality and can be thus held as role models. And now the latest, with two of these boofheads expelled from the house. How about some programming with some family values!
Thank goodness for variety style family programs such as Dancing with the Stars and It Takes Two.
Well it seems everyone else likes The Bill's return to more copshow type themes. It was bloody boring last night, except the "you bitch" undercover prison guard scenes. Bring back Mad Kathy!
How did Seven News vs. Nine News go last night nationally? In Sydney?
Tribal Mind replies: Why? Did something happen yesterday that might affect the newses differently?
- Whats all the ruckus about the host of morning TV - it isnt that important commercially in TV - in any event I like Jessica Rowe.
The show like, the programming at Channel nine, lacks 'direction/statement' -not sure if its news/entertainment/sport or footy club.
Only the executives can fix that - has Eddie taken a pay cut yet? or is it just the women who are being kicked out of the club - even KP thought women were good to look at on TV.
For a business that is having its last rites read it seems to be rating OK - Channel 10 would die for its ratings and revenue.
ok...this is where it gets interesting. Eddie has said he has confirmed with Rowe that she will continue on Today and she has his "full support".
The latest SMH story has Eddie in secret talks with nearly every female personality to replace her. Now either Eddie is lying or the SMH has made this story up.
I think the former and if this is correct then his position is untenable. Either way, one has to leave, if jessica goes then maybe so does overton, if Eddie goes then I think everyone will wish him all the best in his next phase of his stellar career.
Tribal Mind replies: That was a Sun-Herald story re "secret talks" not an SMH story.
Oh oh...the Sunday Tele has a quote from Eddie and he's not happy. He thinks we're all harassing him and to quote "I have a long memory".
Watch out all of youse Eddie knockers and TM you're not going to get a Christmas card from Eddie this year.
Gourd wat is you problem; re- Matthew's post... do you like get off on being withholding or something, geesus: the kid asked a legitimate question and you retort with your ho-hum smartarsery.
Either respond in kind or dont at all you clown.
Tribal Mind replies: People often ask for information because they want to prove or disprove a theory about Australian behaviour, and I like to hear those theories. The only payment I get for doing the research to answer these questions is to have my curiosity satisfied. Some people are surprisingly demanding and disappointingly insulting, considering this is a free and time-consuming service.
Is it my imagination or has everyone in Channel 9 lost their smile? Jana looked decidely gaunt and haggard this morning and even Fatty and the boys weren't their ebullient selves.
I think the rot began when Hendo retired, he seemed to hold the Willougby HQ together like the superglue that kept his hair in place.
7 can't have just fallen over the line..it won by 1.2 points..given 7 was only 0.4 ahead on thursday, it must have had clear wins either fri, sat or both, to increase its winning margin in only 2 nights..yeah?
Thank you (the post annoyed) for sharing my disappoitment and anger.
Tribal Mind replies: But why do you want to know Saturday night's news ratings? Do you have a theory to share with us? It only needs one sentence. You don't even have to say please.
I was asking about Seven News and Nine News. It will be interesting but I wanted to know Sydney as Samantha Armytage was covering Seven News as wanted to know how she went, in comparison to Nine (both nationally and locally here in sydney)
Tribal Mind replies: Nine news nationally 1.391 million, Sydney 343,000. Seven news nationally 1.329 million, Sydney 360,000.
It all boils down to this.....does Eddie bone or not?...he says he doesn't use the term "bone"..Llewellyn said he used the term in reference to Rowe.
It would be highly unusual for Llewellyn to make up such an odd phrase. The time has come for anyone who has been boned or heard the term used by Eddie to come forward..or are they scared of his long memory?
I used to wake up an switch on 'Today' just to see Sammy Lukis. But then one day she was replaced by the short unfunny actor from the old Aussie sit-com 'All together now.'
I'm guessing its because channel Nine wanted to copy Sunrise's Grant Denyer.
I now watch Sunrise. Pathetic channel Nine, pathetic.
Now if you had got Jon English I might have stayed.
G'day David,
Let me firstly again say how super your blog is and what a great job you do answering everyone's questions and comments.
I've said thanks before to you but I will say it again.
What you do is not taken for granted. You provide the best Tv business blog in the country without peer.
So keep the passion. You're an asset.
Now that's out of the way, Dave time for a little self indulgence !!
What chance any normal network showing repeats of the Wonder years - a show that use to be CHn 10, 430 weekdays back in the early to mid nineties?? just a light question !! secondly - what's your take on Jessica - do you think Ed will eventually bone her and show her the exit door?
If so where would she go next? over to 7?
Many thanks for the reply and help.
Best regards
Michael
Tribal Mind replies: Thanks for the cheering words but I think there is no chance of any "normal" network (by which you presumably mean free to air network) repeating The Wonder Years. There is every chance the pay network TV1 would repeat it, though. Re Jessica: I think she is safe for the rest of the year.
Amidst all the World Cup Soccer, the TV audience has also been shown the other football codes of League, Union, and Aussie Rules. How have the Union Tests, the AFL and NRL games performed by way of audience numbers against the Soccer juggernaut?
Stuart
Tribal Mind replies: There were no afl, nrl or union matches against soccer matches, so it's hard to assess how they would compete. Recent ratings for various forms of footy have been unchanged. Go to www.smh.com.au/tribalmind and see the story called "Australia's all time favourite tv shows" for top scoring games in all codes of footy.
from gretles comments last night it seems that it was not a serious as it was made out to be and was just a bit of fun, would she be saying that if galen last night when evicted turkey slapped her ?
Will be interesting to see how BB rated. I have seen the footage (go to forums such as Behind Big Brother and people are sending it around) and thought nothing of it. It would be assualt in the outside world (non-consenting contact) but so also are many other things that occur in the house on a daily basis. All the education in the world cannot effect peoples behaviours unless you make actions negative amoungst their peers. Many of the BB contestants were laughing the morning after as nothing had been pulled up by the producers. The problem is that all the behaviour previously had never been pulled up so this wasn't a stretch for the housemates behaviour. That said - I hate it when politicians dictate what we can and can't watch. If Family First had their way we would be watching Sons and Daughters all day.
Just need to vent my disappointment in Channel 9 for Saturday night's coverage of Wimbledon. The telecast began with the Agassi v Nadal match. They decided to cross over to Hewitts match after the first set of the Agassi/Nadal match. What for? Only because Hewitt is Aussie? Pulease! It would have been nice to see the Agassi match. It was his last match ever at Wimbledon. Not happy Eddie!
Hi David,
Did Ten Sunday news get a rating?
Steve Leibmann does a stirling job of that. Hopefully he will be put to better use in the future but in the meantime, i have a theory that Stevo's ratings will go up. He's a rock solid news Anchor, even when he has to report on tens own woopsies (BB Camilagate).
Thankyou David.
Tribal Mind replies: Ten news at five got 818,000.
freddy said "Jana looked decicedly gaunt and haggard"When did she not look gaunt and haggard? She looks unwell.I hope she is ok as I have been a fan of hers for years.
Just on the "short unfunny actor" on Today weather (Steven Jacobs). He was int he sitcome Altogether Now, but prior to that he hosted kids TV in Wollongong (on the nine affliate WIN) - this was 15-20 years back, so he must have started pretty young. Then he hosted a candid camera rip off on nine. I would say he is more of a TV presenter than an actor. Not arguing with the unfunny part though...If you miss Sami Lukis, check out Fox sports news on foxtel. She also reads news on one of the Sydney radio breakfast shows I think...
must agree with SC- Channel NINE....I hate you- who in the world wants to see that little twerp Hewitt play every match...surely Agassi in his last match is more interesting than the other dickhead.....even in the event nine did choose to put on ferral....then how about letting FOX put agassi on...but when i switch over they have some other boring match.....no agassi.....so nine dont put it on and wont let fox either.....Good god...give the full rights to fox and nine could show the anitque road show or something.....by the way ...while eddie is giving out the redundancies...give one to Fred , newk and mark woodforde....cringe....they way they rabbit on about hewitt , drool every time he hits a forehand makes me puke...FRED is senile and past it...he makes so many mistakes...= old goat
Hello TM,
The figures clearly show that Melbourne has more viewers than Sydney for most programs in the top ten. If Sydney has a larger population why is this the case? Is there a flaw in the system or does Melbourne just love watching television?
Tribal Mind replies: capital city differences will be the subject of a future column. It could be the weather, of course.
Figures for AFL on Saturday night in Sydney please ?
Can the Swans sink any lower in interest in Sydney.
TM replies: 122,000.
Regarding the tennis, I was actually annoyed that they interrupted the Hewitt match coverage with the Agassi cross! Sure, Agassi's a good guy and all that, but really, who ever seriously thought that he would beat Nadal or reach the business end of the tournament?
-I was much more interested in seeing how Hewitt would go, especially after the five set nail bitter he had just a day before.
I'm not going to get into the whole Camilla/John/Ashley controversy here, but Channel 10 must be secretly rubbing its hands with glee over all the publicity and the subsequent increase in ratings. I predict they will milk this thing for all it's worth, and put a Gretel interview with the two blokes on sometime this week. And, it wouldn't shock me either if they put a couple of evictees(ie. Michael, Dino or Katie) back in the house for the last few weeks of the series.
Wimbledon: of course Nine will only show matches featuring Hewitt or any other Aussies. I tend to avoid their coverage until the Semi Finals. John Newcombe and Fred Stolle's commentary in particular verges on bias, flag waving and pure pro Aussieism. Thank goodness for Tony Trabert, someone with objectivity who knows something about tennis.
Jessica Rowe: I'm bored with her already! Everything about the Today Show is abysmal, especially Karl Stefanovich, who has the personality of a block of wood, and Richard Wilkins(don't get me started on that twerp).
Silent Witness: the best thing on the box right now!
NCIS: my second favourite TV show right now. Glad to see it's rating so well! A good combination of drama, suspense and humour, and great characterisation!
Has channel 9 forgotton that it has 10 seasons of 'Friends' sitting on the shelf? Has it forgotton that, at least until it stuffed up the scheduling of the last seasons, that Friends was consistantly the top rating show every week? Wouldn't a Friends repeat be the perfect lead in to the news? Something light to watch or that you can have on in the background whilst making dinner for the kids. Shuffle Bert to 5, and let's see Chandler, Monica, Joey, Phoebe, Rachel & Ross back on our screens.
Re Big Brother removal: John and Ashleigh should forever be known as Dumb and Dumber. Losing guaranteed eviction prizes including a car in this way is beyond belief. They fully deserve being kicked out of the show, and by their moronic behaviour have possibly ruined their reputations- solely by themselves. How apt their surnames are-Cox (say no more) and Bric (heads as thick as???)
In all this Big Brother shenanigans has anyone asked the question of who was monitoring the housemates?
I'm assuming the blokes involved don't have telepathic abilities, they would have had to talk about it before doing whatever they did so why didn't someone step in? Probably never know.
As far as this whole family first bizzo, never liked 'em and never will, they have a blind spot its called responsible parenting. Censoring should be on a family level not censoring a whole network because a few uptights never got laid in highschool.
re: damien at July 3, 2006 11:12 AM
I'd have to disagree with you. Who cares what Hewitt is doing? Him and Bec have hit the cover of Womans Day yet again. (Give me bucket right now!!!) Agassi is a legend in the game of tennis. If Nine began the telecast with that match, they should have stayed with it. It would have been good to see his last match in full. Plus Hewitt won the match convincingly anyway. I definitely won't be tuning in tonight. I've got better things to do that see him play and hear those commentators drool over his every move. Sooo over it!!!!
Regarding the tennis - yes I would have preferred to have watched the entire Agassi match. In nine's defence, they did switch back to Agassi during the final set so we saw his gracious final departure from centre court.
I seriously doubt Ch10/SSE will put more housemates into BB06. The sooner it finishes up, the better - moreso by their own standards than any other.
The controversy certainly has made people tune in to see what is happening, but I am led to believe that advertisers have been pulling out of BB06 at an alarming rate.
I think it will sound the death knell for this program.
I just watched the BB incident and I have to say I've changed my view. From earlier reports Camilla was set upon and held down while the boys "turkey slapped". The footage showed she jumped into bed with the 2 boys knowing that something was going to happen...at no stage did she say 'NO'. Infact she seemed to be having a lot of fun with the boys. After the turkey slap she snuggles up next to John and he says 'I need a hand' and it's pretty obvious she is stroking is penis.
So the police were correct not to press charges cause it was basically 3 young people having a bit of touchy feely. whether it should be filmed is another matter.
Sammi Lucas for Jessica Rowe
People actually watch Big Brother on the internet at 2AM or whatever? That's astounding! If not for the World Cup or serious insomnia, who would watch anything on a screen at that hour? And who would watch murky images of bogans and bozos doing nothing much at ANY hour?
Every year there has been a HUGE CONTROVERSY on BB - and there have been calls for it to be axed. The fact that our little dictator Johnny has now called for it to be axed is gobsmacking hypocrisy! The other day he came out and sympathised with Channel 9 with what was going on there! Johnny - Kerry is dead and Jamie is NO Kerry so you can put your tongue away.
Sure I am disgusted by the 2 HMs actions and they deserved their punishment - but the bully-boy tactics, mass sackings while the bosses fiddle overseas, and referring to Jessica Rowe in the derogatory term "bone" is as disgusting if not more so!
Leave BB on - it is fascinating to watch what young men and women believe is "acceptable" behaviour and such viewing will make parents very very concerned that this is what their kids are (probably) up to at the moment! Reemember the HMs were more upset about the missing toothbrushes than this incident!!! Welcome to the real world everyone! Ouch!!
Re: the BB incident - there have been a lot of comments made, here and elsewhere, that the incident seemed like no big deal. The bottom line is that BB has a duty of care, and similar to what occurs in a school or in any other environment where the people in charge have duty of care, incidents that may seem like 'no big deal' must not be treated as such if they cross physical/sexual boundaries. This is especially true for BB, where the rules of the house specifically say that there is to be no uninvited sexual attention - so it's not as though anyone in the house can say they didn't know that such behaviour would be penalised.
bettestreep; you're a perfect example of why people should research before they post. The term 'to bone' was not sexual in anyway, if you had of bothered to look past the headlines you would have noticed its the aborinial term for getting rid of someone, so I guess instead of being 'derogetory' its 'racist'.
As for using the term dictator to refer to John Howard, that's simply an insult to anyone who has ever lived under a dictators rule.

>Who cares what Hewitt is doing? Him and Bec have hit the cover of Womans Day yet again."
I care, as he's the only Australian that has any hope at all of reaching the finals, let alone winning. As for Woman's Day, I can't say that I invest any time in reading trashy gossip periodicals, and besides, what has that to do with watching a tennis match?
"Agassi is a legend in the game of tennis."
Yes sure, but he's been past his use by date for a while now, and watching him get soundly beaten out of nostalgia just has no appeal for me. Maybe if no Aussies were playing at the same time, I might not mind seeing the match.
Plus Hewitt won the match convincingly anyway.
Yes he did in the end, but you had no way of knowing that at the time. It could have been another five setter.
"I definitely won't be tuning in tonight."
I definitely will. Can't wait.
BB? I just can't seem to care.
That Murder in Rome show was pretty weak. Would not have bothered normally but there was NOTHING else on and was still really hungover after a swans win.
However did stick around for Jericho which was great, but last of the series the voiceover advised.
How much did I miss, was it any good? Great Noir feel to the episode I caught. Any other fans?
Channel 9 has already tried Friends as a lead in to the news, when they first axed Price is Right or Catch Phrase. As much as i love Friends it didn't work, nor did Fraiser. Although not sure you could really say Berts Family Fued works either so maybe it is a good idea
I am appalled at John Howard's call for Channel 10 to shut down Big Brother, for doing the right thing. Two participants go too far and indulge in behaviour that could have sent them to jail if the victim decided to press charges; she chose not to, but network executives decided to send the message that this was unacceptable behaviour and evicted the idiots concerned despite the wishes of the victim. They go so far as to turn the tapes of the incident over to the police. If the network were truly concerned by sponsor withdrawels, as suggested by a number of posts to the blog, surely they would have attempted to downplay it? Publicly addressing the issue as they have done may have given the programme a short-term ratings boost but risks alienating sponsors. I note that both channels 7 and 9 have jumped on the "cancel Big Brother" bandwagon as well - why is that no surprise? At least Ch7's "Today Tonight" segment which has just aired took a reasonably balanced view of the issue; Ch9's showed that they had decided for us that "it was all a ratings stunt". But that paternalistic perspective was the inevitable result of pandering to their target audiance - the older segment of the community who want to be informed, not stimulated. What's next, Herr Fuhrer, a book burning?
I just saw the actual Turkey Slap incident and I must say regardless of wheather it was sexual assault or silly kids having fun, CH.10 has sunk to new lows. Putting these young adults in such an environment, boozing them up and then acting upset when something like this actually happens.
Someone from BB06 did a good job of spreading the news that a 'serious incident' involving 'two males and a female' had occured resulting in the 'two males being removed' and 'Police viewing the tapes'.
The producers must have been real desperate for any increase in ratings. I bet the first thing that popped into their tiny heads were 'This is our two trapped miners, this is our Beaconsfield. And we won't even have to pay them'.
I had not seen a single minute of BB06 this year prior to this incident. However, like the many other suckers that heard the news on Saturday night, I just had to tune in at 6.30 show to see how they handled it. Yes, I am ashamed. And yes, I hung around for the eviction show to see if they would evict Camilla(the turkey slap victim). I guess the producers are saving her for a rainy day.
Of course Melbourne watches more TV than Sydney. Isn't it obvious why? There's nothing else to do in Melbourne
How did Kerrianne go against David and Kim since Kerrianne is in Canada and Alaska this week.
Also whats happened to Ellen on ten daytime? Has Ten already axed it?
Thanks
Tribal Mind replies: I will try to find out tomorrow. I need sleep now.
mattb - thanks for clearing up "bone" for me. The media articles i read implied it was "sexist" not "racist" - so naturally i assumed they were correct.
As for the "dictator" remark - my dictionary defines "dictator" as a "person with absolute authority". Howard has demonstrated on a number of occassions this particular character trait - so i stand by my use of the term.
Thanks again.
Tribal Mind remarks: That definition of bone was explained in this column a week ago.
PK: people who are up late writing their thesis, or parents with new babies are also prime watchers of early morning BB video streaming. There's nothing on TV except infomercials for the Magic Bullet (chicken quesadilla, anyone?), and no one else is awake to talk to.
Eddie McGuire and Channel 9 suck. Ten has lost the plot it seems like SBS and more importantly 7 are our only solace. I love channel 7. They are the best.
To miso_kool. Jericho was easily the best Tv show of 2006 to date.
Sadly only 4 episodes in the series. Robert Lindsay was superb, probably enjoyed not being a hen-pecked husband and father like his other show - My Family.
As for BB please just axe this sad and pathetic show, so the room mates can be throw out in the gutters were they belong.
Did any of you BB comentators watch GA last night. It was hysterical. A fantastic episode - I laughed all the way through. There is more to life than BB.
I bet Ch 9 are happy that this Big Brother controversy has pushed their own woes off the front page. No wonder they quick to jump on the 'outraged' bandwagon. As if Ch 10 would have thrown those bogans out as a publicity stunt. Everyone knows that Ch 10 wouldn't know a good publicity stunt, if they fell over one. They always miss the opportunities, even when they're handed to them on a silver platter. Personally, I have watched BB in the past but switched off when it became less like a science experiment and more like contrived manipulation in an effort to achieve controversy and outrage. I have only caught snippets of it this series but it is obvious that it has been the worst case of 'unreal reality' we have seen so far.
Back to Ch 9 scandal. I think one of the worse things to come out of the whole affair has been the way they have tried to force the newspapers to reveal the source of the leak at Ch 9. They are trying to take the high moral ground when they often take the low road with shows like A Current Affair when they use every dirty trick to obtain an interview.
Also, I can confirm Sami Lukis is part of the breakfast show at Nova with Merrick & Rosso. She reads the news but also contributes in the chat with the boys. She can be quite funny. Just goes to show that dropping her from Today was another silly mistake for Ch 9, when they tried copying Sunrise with Steve Jacobs rather than make better use of the good talent that they already had.
Why did ACA do so well last night? and Nine News?
Did 7 news and T&T still win all the cap cities?
Tribal Mind replies: Any reader able to tell us what was so special about ACA last night? Seven news won in Sydney, Adelaide and Perth. TT beat ACA only in Adelaide and Perth.
Is it really true? Did ACA actually beat TT in the ratings? Wow, Eddie will be rapt!
Tribal Mind replies: Can any reader suggest an explanation?
Greys was soo funny last night. I loved it. It was very entertaining. Makes Monday night TV all the better. Hopefully the figures continue to rise...
In regards to the tennis, I agree with SC and don't like Hewitt one bit. He is an arrogant tennis player. Australian or not who cares if he wins or loses.
Re our moral crusader John Howard wanting BB axed.. someone should "turkey slap" him!
Yes the incident was not acceptable but Camilla was upset about the 2 housemates getting the boot. So obviously she wasn't too worried about the incident.
The show still rates well and for those who don't like it, don't watch it and stop whinging about it.
Personally, I thing they should axe all news & current affairs because I don't like much of what is happening in this world, including how Bush, sorry, Howard is running the country!
GA was great last night!
Too funny.
It's great to see more and more people tuning in.
It's an incredibly great program.
I'm really ticked off that an awesome show like "House" will not be shown tomorrow. Instead Channel 10, decides it will replace it with "the biggest loser". Seriously...are they nuts?
And not to mention NCIS is going to be a repeat tomorrow night.
Why Channel 10, why???? What a joke!
Tribal Mind replies: Ten does not want to waste new episodes of hot programs against Nine's State of Origin -- nor does Seven, hence no Prison Break.
Channel Ten are hypocrites- put a bunch of dumb horny alcohol fuelled kids together and take the moral high ground when something like this happens? oh please
Don't forget the ABC too, TM - Denton's discussion with the three cabbies was a tad trashy. Though they were quite funny at times - the discussion regarding people having sex in the back of the cab, the driver watching it then going home and servicing his wife was a little 'too much information'.
As a parent there are moments in everything from the Simpsons to wildlife shows - it comes down to supervision of television viewing and being present to discuss values which help guide kids, especially teenagers. The issue I have is that they assume what they see on Big Brother is indicative of all society - when it is only a portion and you choose whether you want to conduct yourself that way, rather than feeling you have to join in to be accepted. Well done to those who didn't just accept it. I'm sure it won't affect Big Brother in the long run, but it's good for kids to see that behaviour like this does offend.
this may be a stupid question, but why wasn't big brother able to show footage of the "assult" but shows like ACA were able to repeat it throughout their story on how appaling a show on a rival network is and trying to get it off the air. Look us in the eyes eddie and say that wasn't a blatant attempt to divert attention from the titanic that is 9. how about you focus on your own problems
I think the reason ACA did so well last night was because they were advertising in the Channel Nine news breaks a story on Big Brother. There was nothing new in it - just calls for the show to be axed which is a predictable and ridiculous position for Nine to take. Both ACA and Today Tonight ran stories on the Big Brother hype but TT didnt advertise it in their news breaks. I was switching channels at the time and noticed the similarities between the two shows.
It does seem odd that Channel Nine and Seven would run stories, albeit negative yarns, on a Channel Ten program - surely any publicity could only result in viewers switching across.
The networks all seem to be running around chasing their tales at the moment!
Pretty boring stuff when the top three shows are News and current affairs (ok, it's a stretch to refer to A Current Affair as a current affairs show. Hell, even John Alexander acknowledged that the show didn't contain journalism). I hate Monday nights on TV. Only good show is Great Outdoors which is starting to look like Sydney Weekender with it's cheesy infomercial style travel reports.
I think the most striking thing this year in the ratings is the fall off in the ratings for the biggest shows of 2005. Am I correct in asserting that since about the end of March, Desperate Houswives, Lost, Grey's Anatomy and the CSI shows have lost somewhere between half a million and million viewers each from last year/Feb/March this year? Given the premium rates seven is charging for those shows (especially DH) you would wonder whether those sponsors would be demanding some discount for the loss of viewers. Its also worth noting that those same shows (particularly Lost) and other stuff like Scrubs, the West Wing, 6 feet under, 24, Arrested Development) are at the forefront of the best that American TV drama has probably ever been. If you don't agree think about the best stuff from there 15-25 years ago - (Hill Street Blues, Northern Exposure, 30-Something, LA Law?). You would be hard pressed to suggest that those were all better written shows and they were relatively few shows in the line-ups that were dominated by crap such as Dallas, Dynasty, Knight Rider, the A-Team). So if this new stuff isn't drawing more than 2 million viewers, and there isn't much quality UK or locally produced shows, the future of free-to-air tv isn't looking very bright.
Here we go again with the ban this show, ban that show rhetoric. Well Johnny Howard and Kim Beazley, and for that matter anyone who wants to tell me what i can and can't watch, I'll just come around to your places and switch off your tv because i am outraged at whatever you might be watching for whatever reason. If i find something offensive on tv i will switch over to another channel or turn the tv off alltogether. I suggest all the do-gooders do the same. What gives someone (who doesn't even know me) the right to judge what i should or should not see. Sorry if i sound angry, but i believe there is too much intrusion and censorship in our lives already. If we don't take a stand we will end up like China where you can only see, hear or read what the government wants you to. No thanks!
Did anyone catch last night's Arrested Development? Another exceptional episode. Casting Jason Bateman's real-life sister Justine as Michael's long-lost sister Nellie was a stroke of genius. Season three has been the best one by far and I still can't quite believe that a program of this this quality hasn't been renewed. Only two episodes to go. Sob.
still the one?............
still the one for what?
How Ironic, Channel nine could not wait to bag Big Brother and air the scenes, they even aired an interview with John/Ashe's mother, they are so desperate to divert the flack of bad media they copped last week, it was the lead story in nines news. Then in a riveting follow up we got to see how salmonella levels are risng and three formerly fat ladies competing for Weight watcher of the year. How many times does it need to be said, if you don't like it don't watch it, that's freedom of choice and freedom of the press Mr Beazley and Mr Howard.
@Sub - The wife, who is a huge Bateman fan, nearly had a kitten when Justine turned up as his sister. It was indeed, again, another fantastic episode.
RE: ACA beating TT, I think it was for the simple reason that they had the finger-wagging, tut-tut story on BB before TT did. It was the last story on TT but ACA ran it as the second story and as a result viewers wanted the juice on BB and wanted it fast. ACA got in first and got traction for the rest of the half hour. IMO
@Garry S - thanks for the Jericho info. Looks like it's a trip to the ABC store. First time for everything.
What's happened to Commander in Chief? Damn I hate the way commercial netwroks shaft good shows without explanation.
Tribal Mind replies: Seven used all episodes it had. They promise the last three eps after they are shown in the US in August.
I'm loving the fact that the main reason these people join Big Brother is for the prizemoney (which is gradually being whittled down to nothing by all accounts), but once the boys who got kicked out (essentiall making them the "losers") cash in on their defamation lawsuits, they'll be instant millionaires (and deservedly so too, considering some of the slanderous claims made against them - the UK Sun especially!) - delicious irony.
This quote is from a news.com artical about channel 9
" it seems the trials and tribulations of the Today show and host Jessica Rowe being one of last week's biggest stories has boosted viewing figures.
Today's audience rose by 8000 viewers in the five capital cities on average each day, while arch rival Sunrise's audience on Seven dropped by 16,000"
is this true?, the figures you published the other day contradict this
Tribal Mind replies: The audience varies day to day, but there's no rising pattern.
I agree Sob
Arrested Development is great television. Absolutley brilliant scripts. I lose faith in people when I think that other sitcom crap rates through the roof and the best show on tv does get renewed!
television from both america and the uk has lifted in quality over the last decade or so, since many film makers and actors realise that the popularity of dvd home theatre and internet downloading means that films seen in cinemas are no longer the main entertainment attractions they once were.
this is why writers such as Alan Ball and Joss Whedon, along with most of the Hollywood elite are now sensing that quality Tv is quite lucrative.
Australia falls very far behind in catching the wave of this trend.
> kane: "still the one?............
> "still the one for what?
Still the one for presenters who always look as though they've got a stick shoved up their arse.
Look, all up, TV is pretty woeful with a plethora of crime & reality shows.
By the way, is this weekends AB - Wallaby clash being shown live into NSW on Channel 7? Sadly, down here in Melbourne, we have to wait until 10.30 to tune in with Channel 7, the self proclamied 'home of rugby' deeming some average movie more likely to pull in the viewers......sigh.....
Big Brother stinks and if anyone can actually defend such an immoral excuse of a show, then you need to take a close look at your own ethics.
Fancy a woman wanting two men to stay in the house after being sexually degraded. She must have no morals either.
Thank goodness for those in politics and other arenas with decency to ask for the show to be scrapped.
Gretel your 5 minutes of fame are up.
Love my Dreamy says: I'm really ticked off that an awesome show like "House" will not be shown tomorrow.
Seven will show the penultimate episode of PB in Melbourne tomorrow night against live coverage of State of Origin.
david asks: whats happened to Ellen on ten daytime? Has Ten already axed it?
Ten is showing new episodes of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy in Ellen's timeslot (12 noon) for it is still school holidays in NSW.
I'll tell you why boomers are watching more TV. It's beacaue they cannot get a job, because Australian employers think anyone over 45 is too old.Well, bugger you lot, because you will have to pay more tax to keep us alive and watching TV all day, instead of using our skills and experience and giving us something useful to do.As for internet Tv check out "PP Live english" on a search site. Free movies, and good quality.
Maybe the reason why ACA rated better than TT was because TT was advertising 'MUSLIMS MARRYING MORE THAN ONE WOMAN AND SAYING IT IS THEIR RIGHT AS A MUSLIM!" -- I think we are all sick to death of the Muslim beat up stories and most people switched to ACA.
"If anyone in the Big Brother house broke the law then it can be dealt with by the legal system. Attempting to force a television show off the air because of an incident that wasn't even screened is an excessive intrusion into the lives of Australians by moralising, preaching politicians."
I don't think asking for the banning of a TV program which encourages or shows illegal sexual behaviour is necessarily preaching, is it? Australian Democrat Senator Andrew Bartlett needs to think about what he is saying, if we saw minors being sexually harrassed would we want that on TV? Sure we can say that the people harassing the minors must be prosecuted but I doubt anyone would think we are invading someones privacy if we asked for the show to be canned? Or am I seriously out of touch with the society I live in.
Tribal Mind replies: It was never shown on TV, and Ten threw out the offenders.
Hey TM,
How did 'The Daily Show'do last night?
I hope it does well, it saves us the trouble of dowloading them...
Tribal Mind replies: It is not visible on any ratings chart, so presumably it got less than 200,000 viewers.
I hope Eddie was watching carefully in Deutschland. Soccer teams that kick no goals in normal time or extra time go to penalties to end the agony...
A lesson there for Today, which is in injury time after triple extra time. Let Jessica, Karl and Richard take a penalty shot, one story that decides which person will get another gig on another show - and then blow the whistle on it. Move on.
In their place, live shows with Hi 5 stars would be a more interesting vehicle for the news of the morning than these insincere clowns. My daughter would approve of that. Thomas the tank engine could cover the weather. At least his smiley face is convincing. And he travels well.
In addition, Guus could teach Eddie something about introducing new talent after half time. Talking about dropping the new blood when they badly need goal scoring potential is madness.
Nine stinks of staleness and try hard - Jessica Rowe is a perfect barometer of their culture of fake, having lost her groove the minute she arrived. Let Jessica go back to being Jessica rather than the Desperate Ninewife slash Willoughby Consensus version. She is the perfect key indicator of Nine's woes. Let her host with Reg Regan, the most sincere pretender Nine has. (That's assuming she wins the penalty shoot out, of course)
Could you please tell me how the State of Origin Themed Family Feud went? Thanks.
Tribal Mind replies: 781,000.
Mattb -- I was aware of the other definintion of the verb "to bone". This definition was quickly provided by the media. I find it interesting that this was deemed necessary, considering Eddie denies using the term at all. I think the question is, should we believe that this was the intended, slightly less offensive meaning (not that Eddie said it of course)?
Secondly, I think we're missing the point when we reflect on Camillia's reponse to the BB incident. I think the fact that she dismisses it as a joke and APOLOGISES for it sends just as dangerous a message to the hoards of impressionable young viewers out there as the incident itself. I agree with Tim Brunero: the most important thing to come out of this is not the possible axing of this stupid show (can't believe I'm quoting John Howard!), but the discussion that should follow about attitudes to women and sex.
TM, how many viewers did Enough Rope get last night? Those three cabbies was the funniest thing I have seen on TV in a long time.
Tribal Mind replies: 912,000.
Ban this, ban that, blah blah blah... Let's ban the pollies instead. Useless twits who apparently have nothing better to do than moralise about what we should be watching on our TV screens.
Just wondering how Law and Order SVU went last night, I just assumed it would have got more than a million - clearly not.
Tribal Mind replies: 891,000.
miso_kool, I saw a couple of the Jericho eps and really liked it. Quality sets, plus a good mystery.
Grey's was excellent last night. Very funny, but still had some drama. I used to watch Desperate Housewives, but Mythbusters cracks me up and last night's capturing of Jamie's 'flatus' ensured that I'll keep on watching it for the laughs rather than trying to sort through all the dramatics on DH.
** Tribal Mind replies: Ten does not want to waste new episodes of hot programs against Nine's State of Origin -- nor does Seven, hence no Prison Break. **
D'oh! Forgot State of origin was on...I still would rather watch House. :D
Just a little bit hypocritical for Ch 7 & Ch 9 to be slamming Big Brother but then screening the controversial footage during their 'evening news and current affairs variety hour'. Why are these programs allowed to screen this footage in an evening G/PG timeslot? This footage should be classified 'MA' or 'R'.
Where are the pollies now? Why aren't they calling out for the axing of these tabloid programs?
Were the conversations between Llewellyn and Eddie taped by Llewellyn? They seam very accurate so one who be thinking they may have been taped. Eddie has advised he doesn't use the word "boned", Llewellyn could prove it by submitting the taped conversations if they exist but then they might be illegall.
Re: Arrested Development Another exceptional episode. Season three has been the best one by far
Whilst still outstanding TV, I dont think season 3 was the best ever, the whole wee britain story line for the first six episodes was pretty annoying.
But nonetheless, by far the best comedy on television (which scrubs a close second)
Interesting points raised by 'the watcher' about tv shows of 15-20 years ago, but don't forget the landscape of our lives has changed significantly since then.
Where as 15-20 years ago, the only real things to compete with TV were the movies or a book, now TV competes with not only the movies, and books, but pay TV, playstations, mobile phones, and most importantly the internet. Free TV's main nemesis is internet surfing, and downloading, and I know that, especially in the under 30 bracket, that a lot of internet users know how to get their favorite shows shortly after they air in the USA or UK - and 6 months before airing here. I can download an episode of my favorite shows about an hour after it airs in the States if I wanted to. Then if i've already seen it, why watch it on TV?
I think today's TV is much smarter than 20 years ago - as we are smarter as well. I dare suggest that the population of 1986 would not be able to follow the complexities of CSI or NCIS, like we can today. LA Law, MacGyver and the like had quite simple story lines back then. It's "Who shot J.R." vs "Who uses DNA recognition and the services of a crime lab to solve a murder 35 years ago in the Naval yards of a guy buried in a barrell of acid who was reported missing 5 years earlier"
I think credit is due to the producers of todays shows for keeping them up-to-date and interesting.
TM: I see that the AFL broad cast in Sydney got a miserable 122,000 viewers. Do you think it has anything to do with the way Channel 10 promotes the Swans games? The promos make it sound like an edition of the OC, not a footy match. I am an AFL fan, but I find it hard to get interested when I hear those embarrassing promos. The thought of having to endure Quartermain, Lane, Walls and Hudson as well is a real turn off.
Also TM, on the topic of AFL...has Channel 7 announced who their on-air commentary team will be when they take over from Ch9 in 2007? Please, let it not be that awful Rex Hunt. His radio commentary is dreadful - I defy anybody who can work out which teams are playing, let alone where they are on the field. He used to do the game commentary when Ch7 had it last time, and he was bad them. From his radio efforts, he has got worse.
Tks, in advance
Tribal Mind repies: Not that I know of.
Channel 9, holding back shows like the final seasons of Frasier and Sex in the City a few years ago was probably where it all began to go pear shaped. Who know's what's happened to Nip/Tuck? It's gutless to start blaming the demise of a network on a blonde, slightly slim, well heeled and well educated woman.
Banishing brilliant shows such as Six Feet Under to midnight and continually harping on about tired "coming soon" UK ice skating/variety vehicles with 9 personalities is just the pits.
No, it's not a mates footy club, though I can see it going that way.
I think Eddie needs a lifeline!
Hi TM just wondering how bb uplate rates is it the number 1 late night program? thanks
TribalMind replies: Last night Lateline on the ABC got 274,000 viewers. BB Up Late must have got less than that, since it does not appear in the top 50 shows of Monday. Last Friday BBUL got 284,000.
for arrested development fans.
although the current series being shown on 'Fox' in the US has been cancelled at the 13th episode - there is 22 episodes in the series and 'Fox' is going to screen the remaining episodes during US non-rating period.
Any news when ch 7 will air the remaining episodes after the 1st 13 episodes is screened?
I think we're up to number 11.
also, futurama is coming back in 2008. all the actors have just been signed!
hey TM
did u find out how KerriAnne did against david and Kim since she is broadcasting from Alaska?
And whats Ten done with Ellen at midday?
Thanks
Tribal Mind replies: Each day I receive a list of the top 50 most watched shows of the day before. Both Kerri Anne and David and Kim do so badly they do not normally appear in the top 50 -- so they clearly attract less than 250,000 viewers.Last week, just to give you an indication, KAK averaged 165,000 a day, and D and K averaged 111,000 a day. There is nothing to indicate either of them changed yesterday. If either show gets into the top 50 at any point this week, I will let you know. How long is KAK away?
No idea re Ellen, but hopefully Ten, which monitors this blog, will give us an answer.
With just a couple of percentage points in it, does Nine really care as much as we think it does about losing to Seven? Serious question: how much in dollar terms is such a small margin worth? In a three-horse race, is being no. 2 such a big deal?
Tribal Mind replies: Ad agencies with limited budgets like to go with a perceived winner, so it's vital for Nine to stay on top. It's more about prestige than reality. There's a theory that every percentage point is worth $20 million.
I continue to be SHOCKED at how high a ratings Border Security gets. The top TV show!! My god can anyone please enlighten me to why this show is so populer??
nich says .."I think Eddie needs a lifeline" This could be a problem nich... he can't ask the audience - they havent got anyone left... the only friends he has are Bogans, so unless the question is about
Hey TM,
Are those figures from this week or last week, because I was certain Tuesday's episode of last week got 1.12 mill viewers as well.
Thanks for the figures though.
Daniel
Tribal Mind replies: well spotted. I had gone back a week too far in my figures. Last Tuesday should be 1.035m. I will correct above.
