Ratings Week 25: How long can Eddie last?

Updated 10am Monday June 26
by David Dale.
This week the staff at Channel Nine are wondering how much longer Captain Eddie McGuire will be allowed to steer The Titanic, after his expensive stunt of flying a bunch of bogans to Germany for a special edition of 'The Footy Show' ended up as number 42 program for the week, and Nine ended up number two network.

Hopefully Nine's bosses will be charitable enough to let him return to hosting 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire'.

Despite a disaster with '24', Channel Seven won the week with 27.7 per cent of the prime time audience, followed by Nine with 26.8, Ten with 23.0, ABC with 15.3 and SBS with 7.3.

This week Seven is hoping to compensate for the failure of '24' with an American sitcom revival led by 'How I Met Your Mother' and 'My Name Is Earl' on Thursday. It also (forlornly) hopes the second last 'Prison Break' can distract some viewers from 'House'. But then it risks annoying viewers for the next two weeks by delaying the final episode of Prison Break to avoid competing with footy matches on Nine.

Ten is wondering how much damage it inflicted on its reputation as the gutsy youth station by buckling to political pressure and cancelling 'Big Brother Adults Only' (replaced tonight by -- surprise, surprise -- 'The Simpsons').

And SBS is simply smiling. Between 5am and 7am on Friday, 2.02 million people in the mainland capitals watched Australia draw with Croatia -- a timeslot record for Australian television. This puts SBS in the unique position of having two programs in the ratings top ten for the week. The game got its best audience in Sydney, with 943,000 viewers, and averaged 507,000 in Melbourne, 279,000 in Brisbane, 168,000 in Adelaide and 126,000 in Perth. The game is about to change on Thursdays. Channel Nine has decided to take on Lost -- with comedy. At 9pm on July 6 it will launch The New Adventures of Old Christine, the latest sitcom starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus of Seinfeld fame. At 8.30 the same night it will launch a new season of Charlie Sheen's Two and a Half Men.

Apparently Nine assumes Seven will get the viewers addicted to American laughter at 8pm on Thursdays with My Name Is Earl, and hopes they will switch channels to avoid losing the mood at 8.30.

Channel seven won last night with a prime time audience share of 29.8 per cent, while Nine got 29.3, Ten 22.8, ABC 12.3 and SBS 5.8

Updated 10m Thursday June 22
Channel Seven must be devastated by the results for 24 on Wednesday night. The relaunch of the thriller series attracted just 747,000 viewers across the mainland capitals. Are Australians so tired from the soccer that they can't stand two hours of excitement after 9.30pm? Or is it an attention span issue - we don't want to commit to a show that requires following a plot for 24 episodes? Or are we afraid of a drama that is too close to the reality of the dangerous world we see every night on the news?

Wednesday is now owned by Channel Ten. With Thank God You're Here temporarily off our screens, House becomes No. 1 for the night, and the gimmick of adding three more inmates to the asylum brought back some of the viewers who'd been getting bored with Big Brother.

Ten won prime time with 28.8 per cent of the audience, while Seven got 26.8, Nine got 24.7, ABC got 13.7 and SBS got 6.

What Australia watched, Wednesday
1 HOUSE Ten 1,619,000
2 TODAY TONIGHT Seven 1,569,000
3 SEVEN NEWS Seven 1,519,000
4 NCIS Ten 1,498,000
5 BIG BROTHER - INTRUDERS Ten 1,392,000
6 HOME AND AWAY Seven 1,367,000
7 NINE NEWS Nine 1,332,000
8 TEMPTATION Nine 1,232,000
9 A CURRENT AFFAIR Nine 1,227,000
10 PRISON BREAK Seven 1,223,000
(OzTAM mainland capitals, preliminary estimates)

Updated 10am Wednesday June 21
Tuesday is Channel Seven's night. From 6pm to 9.30pm it owns every timeslot. It was only stopped from a clean sweep last night by Rove Live, because Seven's over-40 audience starts to go to bed then, leaving control of the remote to Ten's 16-39ers.

Rove got his second biggest audience for the year - 1.02 million - but Seven still won Tuesday, with a prime time share of 30.7 per cent, while Nine got 26.0, Ten 22.5, ABC 14.3 and SBS 6.5.

What Australia watched, Tuesday
1. Border Security (7) 2.15m
2. Medical Emergency (7) 1.85m
3. Seven News (7) 1.61m
4. Today Tonight (7) 1.53m
5. Home and Away (7) 1.45m

Updated 10 am Tuesday June 20
They were the bookends of the viewing day: the soccer and the doctors. Before sunrise on Monday, plucky Australia and complacent Brazil gave SBS 1.53 million home viewers in the mainland capitals. After 9.30pm, whiney Meredith and angry Cristina gave Channel Seven 1.21 million viewers. Both are lower figures than expected and both require explanation.

These questions arise:
1) Did a lot of soccer fans go out to pubs, clubs and sites to watch the match and thus become unmeasurable?
2) Did a big chunk of the 1.8 million people who were addicted last year to Grey's Anatomy fall asleep because they'd been up watching SBS the night before?
3) Has the pale detective permanently tempted half a million women away from the Despos, and did that half a million stick with Channel Nine at 9.30 for the neurotic multi-tasker instead of switching to Seven for the angsty doctors?

Seven won the night - but only just - with 28.8 per cent of the prime time audience, while Nine got 28.2 per cent, Ten 20.4 per cent, ABC 14.3 and SBS 8.3.

What Australia watched, Monday
1 Seven news (7) 1.62m
2 Cold Case (9) 1.6m
3 Today Tonight (7) 1.59m
4 Desperate Housewives (7) 1.56m
5 World Cup: Australia v Brazil (SBS) 1.53m
6 Nine news (9) 1.48m
7 What's Good For You (9) 1.45m
8 Home and Away (7) 1.43m
9 Big Brother Nomination (10) 1.32m
10 A Current Affair (9) 1.30m
(OzTAM mainland capitals, preliminary estimates)

So who were the people who stayed up till 4am to see the soccer, and then stayed awake till 10.35pm to see the doctors? You can gain a good sense of that from the list of programs most watched on Monday by viewers aged 16 to 39:
1. World Cup: Brazil v Australia (SBS)
2. Desperate Housewives (7)
3. Big Brother Nomination (10)
4. Big Brother (10)
5. Grey's Anatomy (7)
6. Neighbours (10)
7. Big Brother - Adults Only (10)
8. Home and Away (7)
9. Supernatural (10)
10. Nine News (9)

Updated 10 am Monday June 19
Did most of Australia go to sleep at 8pm on Sunday, in preparation for a 2am wake-up call? The audiences for most regular shows were down on the usual Sunday figures, but Channel Nine made the best of a slow night with 27.4 per cent of the prime time viewing, while Seven got 24.7 per cent (thanks to a rapidly declining talent quest), Ten got 24.4 per cent (thanks to a clumsily dramatised murder non-mystery), the ABC got 15.8 per cent (thanks to the Queen) and SBS got 7.8 per cent (thanks to soccer fans locking themselves on for the duration).

What Australia watched, Sunday
1 Seven news Sunday (7) 1.62m
2 Nine News Sunday (9) 1.49m
3 The Society Murders (10) 1.44m (No. 1 in Melbourne)
4 It Takes Two (7) 1.44m
5 Big Brother Eviction (10) 1.38m
6 60 Minutes (9) 1.37m
7 World Cup Footy Show (9) 1.25m
8 Backyard Blitz (9) 1.23m
9 The Queen at 80 (ABC) 1,23m
10 Big Brother (10) 1.14m
(OzTAM preliminary estimates, mainland capitals)

COMMENTS

Today Show you are a disgrace if you are going to claim the U.S Golf Open audience figures as your own. You can't make your own ratings so you trump up a Today Sports edition? Please.

Tribal Mind replies: It would be helpful if contributors to this blog could explain what they are referring to.

  • by J.P on June 19, 2006 at 08:38 AM

Congratulations channel 9. you successfully managed to lower the tone of the world cup with your "world cup footy show" last night. Eddie just had to get his face in there- i guess its one of the benefits of being the boss, being able to make shows for yourself. This was a show that we could have done without. Do us a favour and stick to afl and thugby will you. leave football to SBS who are doing a world-class job.

  • by pete on June 19, 2006 at 08:50 AM

The best thing about the footy show coverage was when someone wrote in and asked Eddie when would the 'Sopranos' be on!

Tribal Mind replies: And what was his answer?

  • by Ryan D on June 19, 2006 at 09:51 AM

Seven should never have taken ITT off last week they gave people time to lose interest. I think it will build again though as more people get eliminated.

Tribal Mind replies: Who went off last night? I was watching Big Brother (where Katie got eliminated).

  • by JAK on June 19, 2006 at 10:07 AM

Judy Nunn.
I think they should ditch Teresa if they have a second series and get Erika to take over.
For all the bagging Daryl Summers gets he and Sonia do a far better job.

  • by JAK on June 19, 2006 at 10:27 AM

I taped 'The Society Murders', whats the general concensus? Did it deserve the pretty decent 1.44m?

  • by William on June 19, 2006 at 10:29 AM

I was pleasantly suprised that Ten finished BB almost on time last night in preparation for their drama The Society Murders. Shows they can do it if they try!
Queenie was also good - how she does it at her age is amazing.

  • by Jane on June 19, 2006 at 10:38 AM

I just failed to understand the whole "Footy Show" concept. It seemed pretty un-Australian to me that they should show up uninvited, pretending to be interested. All I can say is that it made channel 9 (and Eddy) look pretty desperate - but then I suppose they are. Kudos to SBS and their exceptional and proffesional coverage of the event. The other channels could do well with taking a lesson.

  • by cv on June 19, 2006 at 10:39 AM

Tribal Mind replies: Who went off last night?
-Judy Nunn

Tribal Mnd repies: Thanks. It would have been ridiculous having two Katies eliminated in one night.

  • by timmy on June 19, 2006 at 10:46 AM

Finally the day has arrived. Tonight Greys Anatomy is back on TV. Can't wait. Makes Monday nights worth staying in for. I'm really looking forward to the season. Lets hope the ratings agree with everyone's anticipation...

Tribal Mind comments: Tonight's episode is disappointing, apart from the dinner date, but next week's (about Thanksgiving) is a knockout.

  • by SC on June 19, 2006 at 10:52 AM

TM - The answer (re Sopranos) was 'soon'. Eddie was also talking up his visit to the U.S for the pick-up of new shows.
I think it is the last ep of Six Feet Under Tonight!

  • by Ryan D on June 19, 2006 at 11:02 AM

Disappointing or not, I think those that have been anticipating the series return of Greys will enjoy it all the more. I think we're all over watching CSI.

  • by SC on June 19, 2006 at 11:17 AM

I watch big brother purely for the sex appeal.
Unfortunatly the couples are splitting up due to eviction so it will not be as irresistably raunchy

  • by sam on June 19, 2006 at 11:55 AM

Yay...can't wait till tonight for Grey's Anatomy!
Awesome show - glad it's back on.
Gotta love my Monday nights :D

Tribal Mind comments: The ratings for GA will tell us whether the readers of this blog are representative of the tastes of Australians generally.

  • by Love My McDreamy on June 19, 2006 at 12:08 PM

I found the Society Murders quite good overall, but the emotions of the characters didn't come through enough. Obviously, they didn't have enough material to work with without the consent of the family, but people really want to see what was going through the killer's mind during and after the events. At least they didn't sensationalise or dramatise it though..
Nice to see real Melbourne locations as the backdrop.

  • by rach on June 19, 2006 at 12:22 PM

RE: I taped 'The Society Murders', whats the general concensus? Did it deserve the pretty decent 1.44m? From William
I watched the Society Murders last night and found it compelling viewing even though most viewers would have been aware of the outcome. The promo's had me believing they were focusing on certain siblings in the wales family (namely the character portrayed by Georgie Parker) however it showed a good balance of each of the family members and how they dealt with the situation. Majority of the cast were excellent espeacially Heather Mitchell as the eldest sister. All in all I think it is more than worth viewing as it demonstrates some abnormalities of our justice system and also the effect the media has on it.
On another note did anyone else read about Steve Liebman joining Channel 10, to start with he will be doing the weekend news but hopefully if all goes well he will take over as co-anchor of the early news (it currently gets absolutely dismal ratings) and Australians will once again be able to start there day with a factual news program.

Tribal Mind replies: Not quite true to say Ten's early news gets dismal ratings. Its second half hour beats both Deal or no Deal and Bert's Family Feud.

  • by CheckOnIt! on June 19, 2006 at 12:29 PM

Question! If Channel 9 are restructuring the Today Show what Nine Personalities do you think they should pput in the positions of Host/s & Newsreader?

Tribal Mind replies: Why stop at Nine personalities? They might recruit Katie Fischer and Michael from Big Brother.

  • by CheckOnIt! on June 19, 2006 at 12:31 PM

Eddie's reaction when Sam Newman mentioned the Sopranos was classic.
It will probably come back but be screened at 12am.

  • by canoli on June 19, 2006 at 12:44 PM

I enjoyed the The Channel 9 World Cup Footy show much more than the regular Footy Show. Should be done regularly with a range of sports people on the panel instead of just gAyFL, and NRL. Ofcourse they could talk about gAyFL and NRL.

  • by Kevin on June 19, 2006 at 01:04 PM

I am not sure about this Eddie Everywhere being the CEO of NINE; although i gave him the benefit of the doubt a few months back. You get the feelings that he is hogging the space normally allocated to the network's own stars (World Cup Footy and Beaconsfield coverage). Does he not understand the difference between a CEO and a TV Host? How would a CEO running such a high pressure/profile job get so much time left to fill in with on-air roles? Surely the board at PBL must be feeling a little funny, not forgetting other talents in the network that had their roles robbed by the boss?? Maybe he can afford to squeeze some time for the floundering Today show!?

  • by ozboy1999 on June 19, 2006 at 01:07 PM

Hey TM, any idea what Nine ate doing with ER?
has been replaced by Comedy Inc at 9.30 wed and no sign of it elsewhere this week.
Also, I am guessing Torvill & Dean's Dancing on Ice or whatever its called will replace Survior at 7.30 next Tuesday...would seem to be their only open 2 hour slot (can't see them fitting in into an hour), any confirmation.

  • by Chris on June 19, 2006 at 01:37 PM

TM: How are ratings calculated for the soccer accurately when so many people watch them in public forums such as Pubs, The Rocks, the Casino etc?

Tribal Mind replies: The ratings do not claim to cover pubs, clubs etc. The figure is only an estimate for home viewing.

  • by Dr DK on June 19, 2006 at 01:46 PM

The only thing "spectacular" about Channel 9's Footy Show special last night was its failure. It was hard enough to swallow, knowing that the network was so blatantly jumping on the bandwagon of another sporting code.
But then, at the start of the show, they promoted themselves by claiming it was a first, in that they were bringing all the football codes together (that is, if Peter Fitzsimmons qualifies as a rugby spokesman). Did someone forget to tell them they were there for the World Cup...aka Football, aka Soccer? Where were there soccer panellists? What a joke - league has-beens waxing lyrical about a sport most of them would three months ago have written off as a pansy's pastime.

  • by NK on June 19, 2006 at 02:09 PM

Hey Tribal Mind,
Will the exact figures for the overnight football game be released tomorrow because they are counted as todays ratings?

Tribal Mind replies: If you're referring to Aus v Brazil, the audience estimate will be part of the ratings released tomorrow morning. Watch this space at 10 am.

  • by Nick on June 19, 2006 at 02:17 PM

Hi all from Geoff,
Just got foxtel and so far the honeymoon period isnt over yet ..
one question - considering Eddie is such a big AFL fan - question for you eddie - What do you know about the world game ?

  • by Geoff on June 19, 2006 at 02:38 PM

I began watching the footy show craptacular last night before grabbing a few hours sleep prior to the Socceroos match.
Did any TM readers spot that Jim Kerr of Simple Minds, performing before a packed Munich theatre was miming to 'Don't You Forget About Me'. How disappointing! Now if it was Ashlee Simpson or Milli Vanilli I could understand it but I'm wondering whose idea that was?
A pity Eddie wasn't specific about when the Sopranos will return to Nine. At least he gave SBS a free plug.

  • by Sacs on June 19, 2006 at 02:57 PM

Just continuing on from The Bill discussion from the other blog. As BOC pointed out 'The Bill' should do well on Tuesday with the whole Gabriel thing reaching a climax, but unfortunately I don't think there will be much of a change in it's usual figures. This is because the ABC fails to promote the show, in comparison to it's other cheap shows and Sunday night thrillers that do poor. My guess is that it'll probably get around 1.1mill, no more. I can thankfully say though, that 'The Bill' has taken a turn for the good. With the new producer stepping in, I can assure you, there will be no more physco officers, or bomb devastations in the nic or any long running sagas involving coppers and their love lifes. So past viewers or addicts of the show who have turned away because of the soap elements, now is the time to come back because the show has gone back to it's crime elements and nearly all of the wooden characters are set to leave. Finally about Tuesday's episode, may I say it's the most dramatic episode I have seen this millenium; it's edge of your seat's stuff. Enjoy it if you decide to sit down and watch it.
Thanks TM as well for the figures.

Tribal Mind replies: Do you mean tomorrow night's ep? How were you able to see it already?

  • by Daniel on June 19, 2006 at 03:14 PM

PopGoesCanberra asks.."The Bill should do well Tuesday night, the whole Gabriel thing is (supposedly) reaching a climax, it's been a couple of years coming. What will be next though....we've had Mad Kathy, Psycho Gabriel...who is next?"
How about a character called Daniel who is so obsessed with viewing numbers he starts breaking into houses with OzTam and killing off the occupants and setting their TV's to come on just in time for the Bill each week? :0) One way or another it could be a ratings winner.
And off the subject totally - Greys Anatomy could top the 2 mil tonight EASILY!

  • by David H on June 19, 2006 at 03:19 PM

I still can't get into ITT, It's like a budget dancing with the stars - with weird combinations of people like Kate Fischer towering over her geeky looking partner. Although i have to say that Bevo is a pretty good singer! I can't believe it rates so highly - maybe because its a way of seeing stars like Jade McRae free of charge. If we are going to be shown a singing "talent" show i would rather watch Idol!

  • by Annabelle on June 19, 2006 at 03:32 PM

The Tribal Mind claim that no one watched television last night and went to bed early so they could watch the soccer is incorrect. More than 1/2 million more Australians watched tv last night than the previous Sunday night.
We're also aggrieved at portraying 'It Takes Two' as 'fading' when it bowled over 60 Minutes and Big Brother Eviction and Backyard Blitz and another stunt episode of Big Brother! The programme's back after one week off for rugby coverage and wins. Don't know what more a programme can do across the two toughest hours for Seven in primetime!
And re your claim that Ten News beats Deal or No Deal. It doesn't. Deal or No Deal now dominates the 5:30pm timeslot - wiping out the second half hour of Ten News and Bert. Has done so for much of the year ... as duly pointed out in our weekly ratings reports.

  • by channel seven on June 19, 2006 at 04:10 PM

Re channel ten's early news . I think Checkonit means the 6am edition ? It's all I'll watch now , given up on 7's sun NO surprise and that even more woeful Today (tired day) on 9 ..May the sun set on both dismal " news " offerings .

  • by jane doe on June 19, 2006 at 04:21 PM

Re Annabelle
I can't believe It Takes Two rates so highly Like the majority of shows on Nine & Seven, It's the + 55 year old demographic that provides rating wins. ITT last night, 47 % of viewers were + 55.. like wise 60 Minutes 41 % etc..
But each Network Spins their own ratings line re Demos etc..

Tribal Mind replies: For details of what age groups watch which channels, go to tomorrow's column, now in sneak preview at www.smh.com.au/tribalmind

  • by mark on June 19, 2006 at 04:22 PM

So Channel Seven responded to TM's comments about It Takes Two? ...yeah It Takes Two is going well, and Seven could even start winning Sunday nights if they didn't stuff it up by putting on lame movies afterwards. What about this new series Criminal Minds? Am very keen to see this show. Where is it? Put that on at 8.30 Sun...crime dramas rate well on Sunday nights and CSI is not on anymore. It's time for Seven to fix its Sunday nights.
Am so glad The Society Murders beat the The Footy Show. More people watched Aust drama rather than Eddie's attempt to cash in on the World Cup - which Nine treated like crap when they had the rights to it 4 years ago.

  • by Helena on June 19, 2006 at 04:30 PM

How fantastic! A channel 7 vs Tribal Mind kerfuffle. This will be better than a combined BB/World Cup/Greys/NRLAFL show.
Are we allowed to place bets on the winner, because I'd like $20 on TM to kick their butts please.

  • by tubbyk on June 19, 2006 at 04:32 PM

Good to see Th Queen beat Big Brother and The Society Murders beat Mr Eddie M. SBS IS doing a great job with the real World Cup coverage.

  • by John on June 19, 2006 at 04:34 PM

This might be a little off the topic, but does anyone know if/when seasons 4 and 5 of Scrubs will be released on DVD?

  • by Fisch on June 19, 2006 at 04:40 PM

Good on you channel seven!! It is refreshing to see that someone with a vested interest actually has the courage to admit that interest.
Also ? very much looking forward to Greys tonight!!

  • by very impressed on June 19, 2006 at 05:03 PM

i wonder how the 100 staff in the news section feel knowing they lost their jobs as a cost cutting excersise only to have the boss then turn around and fly the cast and crew of the 2 footy shows to germany for a load of rubbish show, also what the hell was shane warne doing there ?, i understand eddie confusing nrl afl and rugby as football - he obviously is one who refers to it as soccer - but what does a cricketer have to do with the game ? did shanes mom tell him to go with eddie or was it joe the cameraman i was seening not warnie ?

  • by dan on June 19, 2006 at 05:30 PM

dan
Both Shane Warne & Harry Kewell are on 400K contacts with Nine.. Hence the so called Ray Martin Exclusive on 60 mins....

love the dinner date tonight on grey's anatomy =) and hope australia agrees

  • by Jasmine on June 19, 2006 at 05:50 PM

Tut, tut, TM. Spoilers for both Big Brother and It Takes Two on this post, in the day just after elimination? What if I was waiting for the DVD box set to come out before I watched those shows ;) Cultural cringe indeed. Also, I think we can safely say that the readers of this blog aren't "representative of the tastes of Australians generally" - this Blog is full of Big Brother haters, yet it regularly appears in the top ten, while The Bill and Six Feet Under (for example) never rate.

  • by Kelli M on June 19, 2006 at 06:11 PM

Tribal Mind's continual insistence on speaking the frank and open truth, and letting viewers share opinions is getting a little old. The continued debate about who will "win" the ratings war is also quite bemusing. Haven't you seen our ads where we make it clear WE are the one? This isn't open to debate.
Please remember that as the major networks, WE are in the business of telling you what is a good show or not. WE decide what timeslot it will run, and whether we will cut it halfway through the year. WE tell you who Australia's favourite TV personalities are. WE decide that our customers are no longer the viewer but the advertiser.
Finally, please realise we have you in a corner and you have no recourse if you don't like our shows or the timeslots we show them. What else are you going to do? Download the best of tv months earlier on the internet without ads and turn the tide against us in terms of whether viewers matter anymore? Oh... you are? Er.... Um.... No... Wait... We meant...

  • by channel nine (allegedly) on June 19, 2006 at 06:21 PM

TM, interesting to see that Channel Seven employees have found another place to advertise their shows.
Any chance of this being stamped out, so that we can stick to talking about the previous nights ratings?
Its a little immature.

Tribal Mind replies: I'm not about to start censoring the comments on suspicion of publicist-intervention. We're all smart enough to detect (and sometimes enjoy) such activities.

Come on put up your dukes - let's slug it out... but first... let's have a really long meandering boring conversation about it and don't forget to somehow mention bodily functions in gruesome detail and then flash bits of body parts, swear several times and generally demonstrate the mental age of the average inmate, oops I mean house mate, is a pre pubescent 12 and a half.
There that should do it - how DARE they hate such mature, meaningful and wonderful entertainment.
Oh, by the way Kelli, I watched an episode - well a chunk of it - and there were moments that were genuinely amusing!! Now where did I put that mouth wash and the therapists number?

  • by David H on June 19, 2006 at 07:39 PM

David H, I'd love to know which bits of BB you enjoyed. It might provide the other BB-haters with a guide for what to look out for if ever they find themselves having to sit through it :) I have to admit, although I am a massive BB fan, even I have found the past couple of weeks challenging. I love BB on an aesthetic level, really enjoy it, when big personalities fight in the house, and controversial issues are brought to the fore, but this year they are all so young, and the romantic antics have been boring (and gross). I also love it on a critical level, watching it to enjoy the way production manipulates audiences, but even that has been pretty basic and bland. BB started off so strong this year, production-wise, I'm just hoping they get their mojo back soon (without relying on Intruders).

Chris says: I am guessing Torvill & Dean's Dancing on Ice or whatever its called will replace Survior at 7.30 next Tuesday...would seem to be their only open 2 hour slot (can't see them fitting in into an hour), any confirmation.
I am thinking the same, given Seven's Dancing with the Stars has been so successful on the Tuesday 7.30pm timeslot. If Dancing on Ice is shown on Tuesday 7.30pm and rates well, it could keep a group of loyal viewers so it will give series five of DWTS run for the money when it starts later next year. The battle between the two shows could be interesting and fierce as that between Blue Heelers and Water Rats on Wednesday nights a few years ago.

  • by Johnson on June 19, 2006 at 08:22 PM

Dear, dear TM, ticked off allegedly by Channel 7. What's next Eddie blogging about how much of pain in the backside we all reckon he is. Personally i reckon all FTA shows on TV at 7.30pm on Sunday night were a load of crap and i'm not surprised if viewers went elsewhere for an hour.
Anyone else out their in TM land, watch the excellent ABC show Jericho. Quite enjoying this series. TM is this show rating above or below ABC normal stats for Sunday 8.30pm.

Tribal Mind replies: 832,000 -- well below Poirot.

  • by Garry S on June 19, 2006 at 09:56 PM

I'm with you Helena (June 19, 2006 04:30 PM). Ch7 should spend less time on this blog and more time fixing the 8.30pm slot on Sunday nights.

Ch7 publicist - remember what happened when Josh Lyeman joined a chat room on the West Wing. The natives might get restless. After all, we would rather talk about you, not to you!

  • by Tracker on June 19, 2006 at 10:23 PM

GA was excellent tonight and a welcome return. Bring it on next week!

  • by Jane on June 19, 2006 at 10:47 PM

Kelli M, I honestly can not recall what made me smile in the BB episode I tuned into - other than perhaps the simplicity of the individuals playing silly, but I do recall I was not laughing at them, I was definately smiling with them.
Without wishing to sound superior or whatever, is it possible your disappointment at this years BB is due more to your own development, than a particular failure of the show? Is it possible you have tired of the format and want and expect more than it can give after 5 years?
I had only watched odd specks of BB1 and perhaps even odder BB2 before tuning in for the bit of BB6 recently and actually felt the concept had marginally improved (don't get excited here Kelli, the improvement was from the gutter to the garbage tip!!!) but I found the housemates less stupid than I remembered and decidely less sexually immature in their talk and behaviour in general. I have a suppressed memory of the males having some kind of odd item strapped to their genitalia and having races around the house in BB1 or 2. At least in the show I saw all that stood out (please excuse the pun) was the fact the poor housemates were trying to have some fun in an otherwise boring environment and their youthful enthusiasm was a little catching.
So, if you, a self confessed avid fan are finding it less watchable, perhaps you have moved on faster than the show. If I am right you will positively loathe BB7 and join me in the non watchers corner by BB8.

  • by David H on June 19, 2006 at 11:46 PM

Hey TM any news on the ALIAS front?

Tribal Mind replies: Seven will not reveal its plans more than three weeks into the future. It's hard to see a gap in the schedule with all the new shows they are launching.

  • by Forever Charmed on June 20, 2006 at 12:01 AM

did any one see Denton tonight with Richard E Grant. Fab tv absolutely brilliant. we were glued to the tv for the whole interview, make more of this tv!

  • by samiam on June 20, 2006 at 02:21 AM

An outstanding ending to Six Feet Under. If you missed it, please, please, find someone who taped it. It was brilliant.

  • by Kelli M on June 20, 2006 at 04:13 AM

Showtime in Dubai has just shown the first episode of 24 Season 5 (a coincidence it should launch the same week as Australia!) and without sounding like a Ch7 publicist, it is fantastic! Fast paced, emotional, all I want is to see the next episode! Now while I stand by my comment earlier that 7 will kill the season by showing 2 hour blocks at a time (in the 9.30 slot) but honestly, if you watch this show from the beginning, you too will be hooked...

  • by Daniel2 on June 20, 2006 at 06:23 AM

What time did Six Feet Under finish last night??? I set the tape to stop at 1.20am and when I checked the tape this morning I've missed some. Unbelievable Channel 9! Thanks very much. I just hope I can find someone who taped it and didn't miss the end!

  • by Mikey Mike on June 20, 2006 at 07:43 AM

Enough Rope was amazing last night, Denton and Richard E. Grant were both honest and open and very witty. I also enjoyed seeing Ciaran O'Reilly, the second guest. It's a pity that Denton can't get his guests to meet up sometimes, often the only good bit on Parky is when the guests react to each other (rather than sell their latest book/movie).

Recorded Greys Anatomy to watch tonight, we don't normally watch anything much on Tuesdays. Most of those nasty/dead-people things give me the creeps.

What's happened to ER? It keeps shifting around but seems to have disappeared this week.

  • by kj on June 20, 2006 at 08:44 AM

Like so many others, i was wondering what the hell Shane Warne had to do with the World Cup - other than putting him there so Sam Newman looks like less of a dickhead... Why didn't they have Anthony LaPaglia (sorry if spelt incorrectly) as a co-host? He owns a soccer team, he's funny and articulate - oh that's why. They don't do articulate on the Footy Show!

  • by Bec on June 20, 2006 at 08:47 AM

ER has been taken off air due to a drop in ratings and won't be back until summer according to Nines programming dept when I spoke with them yesterday

  • by Kirstyanne on June 20, 2006 at 09:00 AM

Thanks Kirstyanne. Of course there was a drop in ratings for ER, they kept changing the days/times and stopped advertising the show... oh, yeah, sorry, it's what the rest of you have been writing about for weeks and weeks - 6FU etc.
And I watched a bit of Boston Legal last night for the first time, really enjoyed it, but from this blog I know better than to get hooked, right!

  • by kj on June 20, 2006 at 09:40 AM

I know this is off topic but I can't believe how crappy my set top box is. Since moving to Waverley in January I didn't get SBS and now Channel Seven has disappeared. Any hints from anyone? I've had someone out to look at the aerial.
I miss Grey's Anatomy!!!!!!!!

  • by Sassy on June 20, 2006 at 09:49 AM

what has happened to Commander-in-chief? I absolutely love Mc Dreamy and co but did Geena have to bite the big one to make room for the doc's?

Tribal Mind replies: Go to last week's blog (www.smh.com.au/tribalmind) for full story but in essence: Seven says it used all the eps of CiC it received from America and will show the final three after August.

  • by drgas on June 20, 2006 at 10:14 AM

Lurved Greys Anatomy last night. Not disappointing at all. The dinner scene was really funny. Bring on Monday nights again. Can't wait for next week!!

  • by SC on June 20, 2006 at 10:32 AM

I think Grey's will build but alot of people would have been tired from the soccer. There are some killer episodes coming up. Besides it must have done considerable better than Commander in Chief was, and it must have beat Close to Home convincingly.
From what i hear Desperate gets back on track after a while. People might come back.
I think part of the problem is that the Great Outdoors has gone down so much because of 20 to 1 and Whats Good for You. It runs 10 minutes over time so people are already watching Cold Case before Desperate has even started.

  • by JAK on June 20, 2006 at 10:38 AM

Earlier comment asked what time 6FU finished last night: it was 1.30am. That last 10 minutes you missed were brilliant unsurpassed tv. I recommend buying the dvd for just that last 10 minutes. Its worth it.
If there is a ch9 rep here somewhere. Please answer me this: Why would ch 9 purchase the rights to HBO content? 'the sopranos' is the biggest show on HBO and will likely be canned to 12am or some crap. These types of shows don't suit the over 55 demographic of ch9 viewers.
I suggest sell the rights to HBO content to ch10 or FOXTEL. Then you wouldn't get people writing into the 'footy show' asking when 'the sopranos' is going to be shown.
By the way, when is 'the sopranos' scheduled to hit out tv sets? I'm considering getting all the tech crap so I can download.
cheers,
rip nate

The Tribal Mind replies: You ask "When is The Sopranos scheduled to hit our TV sets"? It doesn't work that way. The networks won't say when they plan to broadcast programs more than three weeks in advance, to avoid counterprogramming by their competitors. I imagine Channel Nine does not know itself when (or if) The Sopranos will be shown here.

  • by adam on June 20, 2006 at 10:51 AM

Re Six Feet Under: CH 9 is a disgrace. I agree: Why buy HBO content at all if you don't have the right audience to watch it!
You can't send mix messages about your brand. Ch 10 know this and have been successful targeting the 39 and under demographic.
I want to say how it was a disgrace last night when I am trying to watch the credits and that damn voice over tells me how great csi will be on sunday. CH 9 makes you stay up until 1.30am in the morning to watch the end of a award winning series and then rubs it in our face with it's craptacular promos.
And no I'm not going to watch CSI on Sunday! Not if it were the last tv show on TV would I watch absolute crap like that. I love crime shows but that CSI S#$> is on a par with All Saints.
I'm getting the sopranos downloaded.
RIP NATE
RIP 6FU
and I expect
RIP SOPRANOS

  • by tredrea on June 20, 2006 at 10:58 AM

Oh...how awesome was Grey's Anatomy last night? Brilliant tv!!
I wish channel 7 would have viewed previous episodes of GA, leading up to last night's new episode starting weeks ago...that would have been great.
McDreamy, McSteamy....is just absolutely McYummy.
Can wait for McMonday's to come :D

  • by Love My McDreamy on June 20, 2006 at 11:00 AM

I'm glad the Aussie drama 'The Society Murders' beat the footy show. They were so obviously just jumping on the bandwagon with Warnie, king of the bogans. No wonder Soccer fans are so incensed with Ch 9 and many refuse to watch because of the bad way they have treated soccer in the past.
Meanwhile, Ch 7 does really well on Sunday evening now with ITT but drops the ball (pardon the pun) after 8.30pm. At least they didn't waste 'Japanese Story' with Toni Collette and pulled it from the schedule for a James Bond movie. JS could do well on another night with less Aussie competition. But really, movies don't seem to work on Sunday nights unless they're something original, like a telemovie or mini-series.
Ch 10 has the right idea with short series and telemovies. If it works, that's good, and you can make more, but if it doesn't you can move onto another idea.
Regarding the programming of Dancing On Ice, I'm sure the Herald had a story about the ice rink being booked out for Sunday nights. Maybe they can change this to Tuesdays but it would be a logistical nightmare. I thought that Ch 9 might show the new Julia Louis-Dreyfuss comedy 'The New Adventures of Old Christine' on Tue nights which they've been advertising. A very strange move to bring back Frasier repeats to Friday nights @ 7.30pm and Comedy Inc to an earlier timeslot to replace E.R. And why did Ch 7 axe Wheel of the Fortune when it is rating quite well? Is it just cost-cutting due to over-spending on the AFL?

  • by J Bar on June 20, 2006 at 11:01 AM

I was quite enjoying Wheel Of Fortune although it did seem quite slow compared to The Price Is Right.
TM how did the ratings compare against the Ten news & the Antiques Roadshow?
Maybe they should bring back Double Dare in that timeslot. I loved that show. (There's not that many formats left is there?)

Tribal Mind replies: AR 496,000; WoF 594,000; NaF 996,000.

  • by Earthquake on June 20, 2006 at 12:42 PM

I would have to suggest that the two main channels execs are doing a wonderful job of shooting themselves in the foot. Between running overtime, scheduling programs at weird times and even 5 or ten minutes after a rival program is set to start, temporarily removing popular shows, running repeats every now and then and generally treating the viewing public with contempt, it is hardly surprising that viewing figures for Greys were lower than anticipated and will probably not improve much regardless of the brilliance of the scripts.
On a night when 7 had Desperate followed by Greys followed by Boston, they should have romped it. Cold Case and Close to Home are slightly above average and mildly entertaining US imports but hardly in the class of Greys or DH and should have been slaughtered. But instead they actually managed to steal numbers from 7. Congrats to the execs of both channels for losing all viewer loyalty and being so out of touch with their audience requirements as to waste the possible audience numbers of expensive and brilliant shows.

to 'tredrea' thanks for spoiling 6FU for those of us who taped it and went to bed, to watch it tonight. Post your crappy spoilers elsewhere.

  • by mattb on June 20, 2006 at 12:54 PM

Sassy RE Set top boxes. I live on the lower North and often can't get any of the digital channels at all. Seven and SBS seem to be the least reliable though. I end up watching the crappy analogue broadcast. This is also common with people around the inner west. There seems to be no solution except get foxtel digital and have the signal come via cable. Although, I am not sure if FTA TV comes through in HDTV or even SDTV through foxtel as I don't actually have it.

  • by Dr DK on June 20, 2006 at 12:55 PM

What happened with Greys. Was it me, or did Channel 7 miss 6 episodes out? The last one they showed was: "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" (ep 10) and the one they played last night was: "Let it be" (ep 17) Source: http://www.tv.com/greys-anatomy/show/24440/episode_listings.html?season=2

Tribal Mind replies: Last year Seven added part of American Season Two at the end of Season One, to take the show to the end of the Australian ratings year. Are you referring to Australian seasons or American?

  • by Nick on June 20, 2006 at 01:11 PM

TM: In that case, how much did Closer to Home attract compared to the 1.21m for Greys?

  • by clem on June 20, 2006 at 01:18 PM

Brilliant finale to 6FU last night, waiting up to 1:30am was well worth it. I was disgusted as Nine's handling of the program. I mean, you can't tell me that 'Real Crime Stories' or whatever crap they were showing at 10:30pm in 6FU's original timeslot was pulling anymore viewers. That's one of Nine's probs I think, way too many crime shows, it's bordering on overkill!
Now that 6FU has finished, I have no reason to watch Nine anymore.
Good riddance!

P.s. greys was fab last night, i remember now why i was so obsessed with it last season.

Question to all readers - Does Eddie know anything about soccer ?

Geoff

  • by Geoff on June 20, 2006 at 02:00 PM

Thanks mark. I understand that people have lost interest in the Supernanny and that's why Ch 9 is bringing back Frasier, but can't they find something new? My point is, do we really need to have more repeats in prime time? Isn't that what Foxtel is for? Why can't they try out something new, rather than inflict more repeats on us? Bring on multi-channel digital NOW!

  • by J Bar on June 20, 2006 at 04:42 PM

RE: Question to all readers - Does Eddie know anything about soccer?
Posted by: Geoff at June 20, 2006 02:00 PM, I am afraid Eddie only jumped on the soccer bandwagon this year and does not know much at all (except Victorian AFL and Who wants to be millionaire). However, let me tell you something Geoff, Eddie is very good at whipping out his cheque book, or offering jobs for his bogan mates whenever it suits him and everyone goes for a happy ride (ala Worldcup Footy). I suspect that this sort of management style may not last though. Sooner or later, the wheels will fall off. Mr Packer and the PBL management team for sure would be feeling a little testy soon.

  • by ozboy1999 on June 20, 2006 at 05:02 PM

I don't understand what Matt B is talking about. I didn't spoil anything.
I didn't say anything about what happened in the show. Also, if you were wanting to avoid knowing what happened in the show - why would you be so stupid as to read blogs about tv shows the day after the finale?
There have been many blogs before mine that had RIP 'character name'

Tribal Mind comments: And anyway, didn't character name die three episodes ago?

  • by Tredrea on June 20, 2006 at 05:10 PM

Did someone say that 'arrested development' had been cancelled?
please don't say its so... One of the great comedies in the history of television.
Could somebody please clarify?

  • by Nick on June 20, 2006 at 05:11 PM

Hi Tribal Mind
Im not trying to spam your blog but if people are having reception problems they should go to the Australian website www.dtvforum.info/
At the bottom of the home page you will find an entire section devoted to coverage in all different areas of Australia. It even tells you if any channels are doing maintenance on their transmitters. Sydney seems to be covered in quite a lot of detail and it might give you some helpful hints regarding improving your reception be it Eastern Suburbs or North Shore. LOOK at the info already posted BEFORE posting a question for one of the Tech Nerds as it could have ben posed and answered before.
And if anyone is looking at buying a new TV or STB it is also very helpful uncovering the crap brands for different types of makes and models.
Thats all TM I hope it helps a few of you

  • by Michael Curran on June 20, 2006 at 06:01 PM

I find it VERY funny that most of the people who watch soccer r also Big Brother fans

  • by g-man on June 20, 2006 at 06:19 PM

Can anyone tell me when Channel 9 plans on screening the 3rd season of Nip/Tuck?
I remember seeing snippets of it during their promotions during the Commonwealth Games, so it must be sometime soon (I hope), and have been looking forward to it since the end of season 2, early last year.

  • by Serg on June 20, 2006 at 06:34 PM

TM: The numbering of Greys is subjective - as the web link I gave shows. However you want to number the shows (on American or Australian numbering) Seven still skipped 6 episodes between the last one they showed here, and the one last night! Thats a lot of good TV us Aussies have been denied

TRibal Mind replies: Unless they are just showing them out of order. I'll see if I can get an explanation from Seven, who tend to be more responsive than Nine.

  • by Nick on June 20, 2006 at 06:49 PM

adam asks: Why would ch 9 purchase the rights to HBO content?
Because Nine has first rights with programs produced and/or distributed by Time Warner group and HBO is owned by Time Warner (as is Warner Bros).

  • by Johnson on June 20, 2006 at 08:22 PM

  • by Bern J on June 20, 2006 at 09:01 PM

Hey
Channel 7 did not skip any episodes of Grey's.
Channel 7 went ahead and played episodes from Season 2 last year and that is why this year they started a few eps in. NOTHING has been skipped. Check your facts Nick!
AARON

  • by Aaron on June 20, 2006 at 09:33 PM

Twice recently (including tonight) the TV program has said that a new ep of CSI New York would be shown. I've sat up to watch it (quite an achievement because I have a small baby) only for ch 9 to screen a repeat. Whose fault is this?? Ch9 false advertising, or the program? Grrrr. Will tape it from now on.

  • by Jane on June 20, 2006 at 09:53 PM

channel 7 didnt skip any grey's. they aired some of season 2 last time, and not just season 1. i think the first few episodes require a strong lead in, and DH is no longer a strong enough lead in.
also, how did closer to home compare?
it'll be interesting to see how house will go without thank god you're here. interesting that channel 10 has put bb as its lead in.

Tribal Mind replies: At 9.30 Monday, Close To Home got 1.1 million and Grey's Anatomy got 1.2 million.

  • by Jasmine on June 20, 2006 at 11:20 PM

To clear up the whole Grey's Anatomy missing episodes question those 6 episodes from season 2 were actually produced by Touchstone as part of Season 1, when the show hit big in the states ABC decided to hold those episodes for broadcast at the start of season 2 in the US (2005/06 Season) hence why epguides list them as part of S2 but they've already been shown here.
The same thing happened with the last for eps of Star Trek Voyager's first season in the US! (A bit of history for you all!)

  • by Jimmy James on June 20, 2006 at 11:28 PM

"CH 9 is a disgrace. I agree: Why buy HBO content at all if you don't have the right audience to watch it!"
Re the above comments - I agree wholeheartedly - output deals suck mostly.
I know that Ten has long campaigned for them to cease and for programs to be on the open market - essentially so competitors could not lock up shows which don't suit them - witness Buffy, The HBO shows, all the Star Trek's, the list goes on and on!
Interestingly Ten seems to have made more headway on this recently than ever before, if they didn't go in search of content outside of their deals we would never have seen Seinfeld (9) or Raymond (7) just last year they purchased 4 WB shows from 9 and took Futurama reruns from 7 and turned them into a ratings hit!

  • by Jimmy James on June 20, 2006 at 11:45 PM

Nick - Unfortunately Arrested Development was canceled by Fox in the US about 3 months ago.
It only lasted 3 seasons. The third season was short.... only 12 eps or so. I'm not sure what season 7 is currently showing.
One of the best TV comedies ever......

  • by downloader on June 20, 2006 at 11:46 PM

I still don't understand the logic of ch 9 having HBO content. In response to my earlier message, Johnson explained that Nine has first rights with programs produced and/or distributed by Time Warner and HBO is owned by Time Warner.
Couldn't ch 9 still on-sell the HBO component of the rights to ch 10/foxtel? just like ch 7 and fox?
History has shown that ch 10 has been able to broadcast shows such as 'everybody loves raymond' succesfully despite poor ratings on the other older demographic channels.

  • by Adam on June 20, 2006 at 11:46 PM

Nick - sorry to confirm the bad news, but Arrested Development finished its run with the 13th episode of Season 3, which aired in the US on Feb 10. I think Ch. 7 has 5 episodes left to show.

  • by Fielding on June 21, 2006 at 12:14 AM

Again, I must applaud WIN (Regional channel 9), who in my area had continued to screen 6FU at 10.30, and who also had the decency to let the final credits run in their entirety with no voice overs etc. The extra long credits were especially needed this week, to give the viewer time to process the montage that played at the end of the episode.
Also, I totally agree with Tredrea - people who don't want their TV 'spoiled' should not be hanging around blogs where people come to post discussion about current TV shows. Stop yer whining.

  • by Kelli M on June 21, 2006 at 01:42 AM

No you didn't post any spoilers for 6FU Tredea - and I couldn't agree more about how pathetic it was to have the end of the series spoiled by the voice-over cretin raving about the steaming pile of CSI crap.
It's too much, I won't be watching the Sopranos when 9 get around to showing it, I'm planning on buying DVD box sets from now on.
No ads, watch when you want to, and not really very expensive.
Watching programs on 9 is a health hazard (not that they have much to watch) due to raised blood pressure - not good for this older demographic. LOL

  • by Sal on June 21, 2006 at 02:17 AM

Re: Missed Grey's episodes. I too was totally confused on Monday night Nick! However, I didn't watch the first season of Grey's the first time 7 showed it...I watched it when they reran it over the summer and it seems that while they did show Season 1 PLUS 7 episodes into Season 2 the first time around they didn't do that in their summer rerun. So yes, some of us were totally confused when it came back on Monday night and Christina was no longer pregnant and Dr McDreamy was in marriage counselling with his wife! I had a look at Grey's official site yesterday and realised that I missed a couple of episodes - and fairly critical episodes at that. Nice one 7!

  • by Bee on June 21, 2006 at 07:44 AM

Johnson, I doubt Dancing with the Stars would be programmed directly against Dancing on Ice. I actually think the Ice show might flop because Aussies don't usually go for rip-offs (remember X-Factor). Also, I don't think Water Rats ever ran up against Blue Heelers. You might be thinking of Young Lions being directly programmed against Blue Heelers and quickly flopping because both shows would have had the same target audience which totally wrecked their chances.
Bern J, thanks for the David Tench website. I wonder if this is related to the new Hamish and Andy comedy show that is supposed to be a spoof of current affairs shows. David Tench might be the host of a current afairs show, maybe?
miso_kool, I watched the Arrested Development episode taped from Monday night. Too funny. They made it look like they were using every gimmick possible to try attract a bigger audience: 3-D scenes, celebrity guest stars, a supposed 'live' scene at the end and Ron Howard begging us to tell other people to watch. They also dropped in some not-so-subtle hints about failing in certain demographics and the Bluth family needing to be more likeable in the family relationships and the audience needing to relate better with characters. Classic stuff. What a waste to show this after midnight.

Re: Missing Greys. I wasn't aware that the when I watched Greys over the summer that it had already been shown on 7 (with the episodes they negelected to show over the summer), hence as Bee stated I would have missed 6 episodes. So Aaron, my facts were kind of right.

Does anyone know what happened to Commander in Chief, was it axed from seven or did the season finish. Is there more to come and when?

Tribal Mind repliles: This was thoroughly discussed last week on the blog, and also answered in two messages below. Just keep scrolling down. The simple answers are no, sort of, and yes -- three episodes after they are shown in the US in August.

Re: Grey's. It's not the lead in that's the problem, it's what it's up against. Last year, it was against Millionaire and L&O (I think), which skew more towards older viewers (and in L&O's case, probably male). I suspect quite a few of Grey's audience last year decided BB Adults Only is better perve material.

Posted by: g-man at June 20, 2006 06:19 PM - 'I find it VERY funny that most of the people who watch soccer r also Big Brother fans'
G-man, where the hell did you get that idea from??
there is no way that my TV will ever be tuned to Big Brother...and since the 9th of June it has not moved from SBS.
BTW TM, to answer your question, Our whole family got together in 1 house to watch the game, and i know of lots of people that are doing that.

Rove sucks so hard he distorts the space-time contiuum in his vincity. Also, he keeps stealing material from the Chaser's War on Everything. The fact that he has no sense of shame or embarrassment makes this no-talent, charisma-free hack even more repulsive.

What is all this about missing episodes of Greys? Im sure Ch7 haven't missed any - as i was fully aware of where the storyline was.

Tribal Mind replies: The mystery is explained. Some viewers only saw the repeat season of GA, when not all episodes were shown. The moral is: always be first with the latest.

How many weeks have nine and seven won this year todate.

TribalMind replies: about equal.

Thanks for the clarification on Greys. My heart skipped a beat there. I didn't think we missed any eps. As for Rove, I think his time is up. He is really scraping the barrel to be funny. His stint on breakfast radio at the moment is just as bad which is why I've changed radio stations.

The Wedge did very well last night. It seems to be picking up ratings. At least for those new viewers, they will be seeing the jokes for the first time. For the rest of us most of them are fourth time around. I watch it in the interest's of science just to see how bad a show can get. It's not like they just have the same characters each week...I mean Little Britain was all the better for it. It's the repeats of the jokes.
eg: The Bushey. Ok, flies piss him off. SO what. Each week we hear about the phone and other services being cut off and / or the bank repossessing something.
The Pokie slags. The kids are in the car...ok come up with something else. Now the fat chick is no Magda Szubanski. This girl who was in Fat Pizza has made a living out of being fat and that's the extent of her comic talent. The Brit Crackers sketch has potential but this girl just isn't funny.
The Sandra Sully impersonation - the joke was made week one. How many times can they milk this? The guy cutting things with scissors. Not sure if this is even meant to be funny but the canned laughter thinks so. It just goes on. I rate the show as the worst sketch comedy ever and will diligently continue to watch it out of amazement. Plus it follows Simpson's.

I'm wondering whether the mediocre ratings for Ch 9 matched the costs of producing The Footy Show: 'Jump on the Soccer Bandwagon' Germany Junket? Did the 100 jobs cut in Ch 9 news & current affairs department pay for that footy blokes end-of-season junket?
Rove did a funny skit with what the Ch 9 news program looks like after the cut-backs. A bit like Community TV with a lower budget. If only Rove did more stuff like that, they would attract more viewers. I wonder if Rove's appearance on Sunrise with his 'Save Larry Emdur' placards and doing the Rove Live from Sydney with a more enthusiatic audience and filling in for Merrick & Rosso on Nova radio have created extra publicity over the last two weeks.

I am absoultely gobsmacked that 'arrested development' has been cancelled. I think its the best comedy of all time, period. No need to have fake voice over laughs - I can barely breathe when that show is on!
5 episodes left? Monday nights (or is that Tuesday mornings 7?) just became a lot more important.
