The ratings race: week 23

This blog is now a heritage item -- worth studying but not current. For the latest discussion on trends in television, click here
Updated 4pm, Sunday June 11.
In the week when Eddie McGuire announced he was going to improve the news service by axing 100 jobs, Channel Nine slipped behind Channel Seven, averaging 27.1 per cent of the prime time audience to Seven's 29.1. Ten had the most watched show of the week and thus concealed some slippage by Big Brother, which has now entered its mid-life blahs. Ten averaged 23.0 per cent of the audience, with the ABC on 14.1 and SBS on 6.7.

This week, how will Ten manage without Thank God You're Here? Will Seven's rugby union counteract Nine's rugby league and SBS's soccer beat them all?

Updated 6pm, Friday June 10.
Final episodes usually do big business for the TV networks -- viz the final of 'Thank God You're Here' earlier this week -- but on Thursday 'The Amazing Race' was an exception. It didn't even get into the ratings top 10, drawing only 1.18 million viewers in the mainland capitals.

Could this be a lesson to Channel Seven (and other networks) about showing cliffhanger programs too long after they've appeared in America? It seems the Australian fans were not exactly in suspense about who would take the prize.

Seven still won the night (with 32.3 per cent of the prime time audience to Nine's 30.0 per cent) and looks like winning the week. Next week, Nine has another State of Origin game to dash any hopes Seven might form with its rugby union game on Sunday.

Poor old 'Prison Break' didn't stand a chance last night against the panicky comedians and the pernickety doctor. Channel Ten had its best Wednesday of the year, pulling 32.5 per cent of the prime time audience, with Seven on 25.7, Nine on 24.1, ABC on 13.2 and SBS on 4.6.

Updated 10 am, Tuesday June 6.
Last night's ratings show how desperately Seven needs 'Grey's Anatomy' at 9.30 on Mondays. Despite having the three most watched programs ('Today Tonight', 'Desperate Housewives' and the news), Seven did not end up with the biggest share of the prime time audience. Between 6pm and midnight Nine averaged 29.0 per cent, while Seven averaged 28.0 per cent, Ten 21.5, the ABC 15.6, and SBS 5.9.

'Commander in Chief' managed only 887,000 against 1.1 million for NIne's 'Close to Home'. Seven expects Grey and her gang to drag back those female viewers.

Updated 11 am, Monday June 5.
Seven had a rare Sunday win to start the new ratings week, attracting 30.6 per cent of the prime time audience (Nine got 25.3, Ten 22.0, ABC 14.0 and SBS 8.0 -- an unusually high figure, thanks to the Netherland v Australia soccer match, which drew 629,000).

Viewers seem be treating 'It Takes Two' as a program to be dipped into, rather than watched all through. It reached a peak of 2.3 million at 8.30 but averaged only 1.6 million over the whole two hours.

'Blue Heelers', on the other hand, held its audience -- peaking at 1.64 million at 8.55pm and averaging 1.55 over the two hours. Seven must be disappointed that a million more people who were regulars for the Heelers in the 1990s did not return to say goodbye last night. Probably they have all died.

COMMENTS

Perhaps It Takes Two peaked at 8.30 because it was running over time and viewers like me who didn't see first part of Answered by Fire were looking for something else to watch. Them all, but haven't watched Blue Heelers for years, don't like L&O The Nasty One, and although Charlie's Angels was cute it wasn't enough to keep us interested for more than an hour. Gave up and had an early night!

  • by kj on June 05, 2006 at 11:33 AM

Does anyone know, if I got a cheap DVD recorder, can I record one free-to-air channel, record another on video, and watch another? Wednesday nights in particular have been getting complicated, trying to keep everyone happy and not having something to watch on other nights. Also our best viewing time for staying awake is 8.30 to about 10pm, which doesn't seem to suit the channels any more, so need to time-shift!

  • by kj on June 05, 2006 at 11:37 AM

A good start to week for 7. If things are pretty similar to last week than 7 should win the week easy.

  • by JM on June 05, 2006 at 11:47 AM

There's no need for shows like It Take Two to run overtime. There's so much filler and garbage that goes on.
And sadly, the show is starting to look like drunk karaoke at your local RSL. Terasa is the hostess with the leastess.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on June 05, 2006 at 12:37 PM

I was such a big fan of Home & Away when I was a kid. The show is now rubbish (Neighbours is where its at in the noughties), and I don't think I'm just being nostaligic here - when repeats of old H&A episodes were screening on daytime TV awhile ago I watched a few and they were really very well written, acted etc back in the day. My question to bloggers is: Should Kate Richie have agreed (asked) to be involved in It Takes Two? Of course it must have been tempting, after seeing the results for Bec Hewitt getting involved in Dancing with the Stars. But surely this kind of stuff is beneath Sally, er, I mean Kate? Kate Richie holds the record for playing a soapie character for the longest time, I think in the world. Is she mad to dilute her career with ITT, or is it about time she pushed to get herself more popularity (and money, I assume).

  • by Kelli M on June 05, 2006 at 01:07 PM

TM- Can you please tell me who's winning the 2006 ratings year so far? Is 9 doing so now that they've won 5 straight weeks in a row? Thanks!

Tribal Mind replies: Seven is still slightly ahead. Excluding Comm Games, Seven has averaged 36.3 per cent of the commercial audience, and Nine averaged 35.0. But Ten is improving, taking more viewers from Seven than from Nine, and that may be what ruins Seven's race.

  • by Helena on June 05, 2006 at 01:07 PM

On the previous blog someone asked why It Takes Two would be taken off next Sunday? The answer is that Seven will show the rugby from 7.30pm live into Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide, and feels an hour is not enough for ITT. ITT will be back the following Sunday.

  • by Johnson on June 05, 2006 at 01:13 PM

Kelli M, I think the lady that plays Alice Horton on Days of our Lives holds the record for longest time playing a soapie character... but I'm just guessing.

  • by Libby on June 05, 2006 at 01:15 PM

'Blue Heelers' result was a little disappointing, its peak wasnt even all that great.
What was everyone's opinion of it? There are always such mixed feelings when it comes to the final episode of a show.

  • by William on June 05, 2006 at 01:17 PM

I can not believe the figures for Answered by Fire. The ratings halved from last week and it was just as good. Why should ABC bother with good local drama content if no one is going to watch it. David Wenham is totally HOT.

Tribal Mind comments: The terrible news from Timor seems to have been a turnoff factor.

  • by Jane on June 05, 2006 at 01:22 PM

Hmm, perhaps Kate Richie only holds the record in Australia then, or maybe not at all. Does anyone know for sure who is the longest serving soapie star in Oz and/or in the world?

  • by Kelli M on June 05, 2006 at 01:33 PM

Re: Answered by Fire - TM, shouldn't the recent news from East Timor have been a turn ON factor? ABF would have been a great way for people to play catch up very quickly on some of the basics on East Timor. Impress your friends at dinner parties and enjoy Australian drama at the same time...ABC should have marketed the show as a current affairs cheat sheet :)

Tribal Mind replies: I have heard this view: "Why should we watch a show that is sympathetic to these people geting their independence when all they do is fight each other?"

  • by Kelli M on June 05, 2006 at 01:37 PM

Can't wait for Six Feet Under tonight - although due to the midnight schedule I will end up watching tomorrow or crap TV night Thursday. 3 more episodes to go and then gone!
Scrubs has just finished in the U.S Ep 24. I watched it all on the net along with Family Guy. All the good shows seem to be getting later and later. Does that mean that the Wedge will be on at 4pm? Honestly, can someone write a good comedy show and not rely on D Grade Celebrities to fill it.
Let's start pitching some ideas here! What are some amazing professions that would make good environments for a TV series?

  • by Ryan D on June 05, 2006 at 01:56 PM

In last week's blog, Angus Finlayson posted- "After feelings of total despair over the appalling state of commercial television in this country, I see here that the scornful ?Today Tonight? was last night?s highest rating programme, with 1.49 million viewers.
If Australia?s population is 20 million, this represents about 7.45%. This immediately makes me feel better as clearly nobody is watching this crap. (Either that or the ratings system is flawed.)
Perhaps Packer, Stokes and Falloon should consider rethinking their existing strategies, as they?re not working. If they were to start broadcasting some quality we?d all benefit.
Any of them got the bollocks to do it? I doubt it!"
Angus, to put a reality check on the rating figures... I did a quick poll of 50 of my workmates (it's useful at times to work in a Big Office) at lunchtime to try to find out how many people watch evening TV.
Of the 50 only 9 said they regularly watch free-to-air TV between 5.30pm and 7.30pm. Of those 9: 1 regularly watches SBS, 2 regularly watch 10, 1 regulary watches the ABC, 2 watch 7, and the other 3 "channel hop". (No one said they regularly watch 9.)
So, if the channel hoppers watched Today Tonight, and my dinky poll has any work, then you're potentially looking at one tenth (five fiftieths) of the given supposed audience, i.e. 0.149 million not 1.49 million.

Of course, advertising salespeople would have us believe that everyone watches TV every night - which I believe says more about who is chosen to have a ratings meter than the real viewing habits of Australians.

  • by Kaz on June 05, 2006 at 02:10 PM

Hoorah! grey's is coming back! and not clashing with any of my fav shows. =)
oops. I realised after I posted last week that it was a new episode of House, thankfully. And this week is also new...finally. I am a downloader of House episodes, and I know a few other Aussies who are too. Although, I also know a few Aussies who download PB too.
It Takes Two wasn't too bad... I enjoyed DWTS, but was a bit reluctant to watch ITT. Its not as bad as I thought it'd be.

  • by Jasmine on June 05, 2006 at 02:33 PM

re: soapie longevity -
Helen Wagner (As The World Turns) holds the world record for appearing for the longest amount of time on one television show as the same character, playing the role of Nancy Hughes since the show went on the air on April 2, 1956.
Hasn't Alf been on H&A as long as Kate Ritchie?

  • by par3182 on June 05, 2006 at 02:35 PM

I think kate ritchie has been on H & A longer than Alf -- if memory serves me correctly then she was on of the original cast for the soap. Alf didnt come in til Ailsa was in the series and i am not sure from when that was - maybe we have another soapie fan who may know this.

  • by a1 on June 05, 2006 at 03:27 PM

So what is going to be on 8.30 sunday? is it going to be My name is Earl? or How I Met your Mother?

  • by Maz on June 05, 2006 at 04:39 PM

Hi all - Alf and Sally have been on Home and Away since the beginning (both were part of the permanent cast from the very first episode - so was Ailsa actually)
Both the actors that play them are in the Guiness Book of Records for longest time on an Australian soap... Some old British guy holds the world record - 40 odd years on Coronation St or some show like that. So basically Sally will have to pull a Helen Daniels and grow old and die on the show at age 90 for to steal his crown.
On an entirely separate note I've been thinking about Seven's GA decision. I think it has more merit than we think. While us TM bloggers are in LOVE with the show, it was still logging under 2 million most episodes... Shows such as CiC (the early eps), CSI, Without a Trace etc, have shown that the 9.30pm timeslot is extremely viable for the networks. Also there is less competition, and Seven can really OWN Monday nights once again. My guess is that Celebrity Survivor will slot into Sunday nights after It Takes Two, FINALLY bringing light-hearted variety back to Sunday nights where it belongs.

  • by Daniel2 on June 05, 2006 at 04:46 PM

Ryan D asks .."What are some amazing professions that would make good environments for a TV series?"
I suspect most have been done before, though not necessarily in the best form, but - Taxi driver, Hairdresser, Chiropactor, Telemarketer (Bollywood spectacular with a cast of THOUSANDS of Indians), in fact any industry which involves people contact. For an upmarket series - an Antique Dealer.
Generally speaking it isn't the basic background of the series that results in crap TV, it is the scripting and plotting that takes it downhill.
The trick is to decide whether the series should be a comedy or serious and the best guide to that one would have to be if the occupation is serious - make the show a comedy and vice versa.
I am certain everyone else will have their own ideas about this and everyone one of them will differ with every other, but as Ned Kelly said "Such is Life" and he didn't even have a TV!

  • by David H on June 05, 2006 at 04:50 PM

I recorded "It Takes Two" {as research for a book}to watch the interesting segment on the "tell all model" on 60minutes.Remember the 2004 disastrous "Popstars Live" where judges and TV executives fought each other like cats and dogs and winner Kayne Taylor disappeared of the radar screen never to be found.Well it seems Seven has found the right formula for "It Takes Two"by hiring the right judges Australian Idol would be envious of.Some weeks ago I e-mailed contestant Simon Reeve to not give up his day job because "you just aren't got it".He replied back in a sarcastic manner "thank you for your kind words but its "ain't" not aren't".I'm still trying to figure it out why the judges awarded Simon equal highest points with Erika Heynatz! Ah well...the show is all about "celebrity status" and not really about singing is it?

  • by Winstone Robinson on June 05, 2006 at 04:50 PM

What's on Ch9 at 8:30pm this Sunday. TV week says To Be Announced.

Tribal Mind replies: That's why you should be reading The Guide in the Sydney Morning Herald.

  • by Lk on June 05, 2006 at 04:54 PM

I think Seven should put Criminal Minds on 8.30 Sunday (to comepete with Law and Order and CSI) or 9.30 Thurs after Lost. Tribal Mind - do you know when Channel Seven is actually planning on screening the show? One of the stars of the program Mandy Patinkin will be touring Australia at the end of the month. Wouldn't this be a ideal time to air Criminal Minds?

TM replies: That's our best clue, because Seven refuses to say. You have to figure where Seven's weak spots are (Wednesday nights, Sunday nights), and which shows are finishing soon (Amazing Race, Beyond Tomorrow) and guess how they'll plug the gaps with My Name Is Earl, Bones, The Unit, Criminal Minds, 24, True Stories, The Real Seachange, and Celebrity Survivor.

  • by Helena on June 05, 2006 at 05:50 PM

Kate Richie has a fair way to go before she breaks any world records. Ken Barlow has been on Coronation St since the early 60's, and some of the other characters aren't far behind. Plus quite a few American Soap stars have been around for far longer than Kate has been alive.

  • by tubbyk on June 05, 2006 at 06:57 PM

Lk asks: What's on Ch9 at 8:30pm this Sunday. TV week says To Be Announced.
The Melbourne edition of TV Week says it will show the movie S.W.A.T. (free-to-air premiere)
Also, I think the reason Seven holds off announcing the Sunday night schedule because it still wants to show some "blockbuster" movies. For example, to coincide with the local release of Pirates of the Caribbean 2 on July 6, Seven may choose to show Pirates of the Caribbean 1 on July 2.

  • by Johnson on June 05, 2006 at 10:03 PM

How many people actually tuned in for the Netherlands v Australia match?

Tribal Mind replies: The answer is in the column (above).

  • by suzy on June 05, 2006 at 10:22 PM

TM,there you go with that far more viewers again. How about some numbers?
Yes afl gets more viewers nationally for the grand final but not in NSW and QLD(the numbers I have seen aren't what I would call far more).Would that be enough to give 7 a landslide in 07?I doubt it.

  • by bobmar28 on June 06, 2006 at 08:42 AM

Answered By Fire was affected by the Blue Heelers finale. Viewers who want to watch Aussie drama couldn't watch both. I watched BH and taped ABF this week.
Ch 7 wrecked it's chances of a bigger audience for the BH finale by burying the show on a Saturday night this year. It was getting half the finale audience on the Saturday night, so it's pretty good that they got 1.55m viewers on a competitive Sunday night. Especially considering it started 15 mins late and ended at a quarter to 11. Just proves to me that the show could have continued in a different timeslot with a healthy audience.
Meanwhile, it's pretty clear that movies don't work on TV any more. People aren't willing to put up with so many ad breaks and have usually seen most movies already at the cinema, DVD or Foxtel. I wonder if CSI viewers will have the irrits with Ch 9 again for stuffing around with their favourite show again, in the middle of winter, when they are more likely to tune in.

  • by J Bar on June 06, 2006 at 09:57 AM

A lot is expected of the show My Name is Earl in terms of ratings. I have watched most of the first series (in the interest's of science of course) and while I like it, it is VERY American. I realise that is normally a selling point here in the United States of Australia, but I can't see a demographic other than those who watch Simpson's and I guess Big Brother being interested. i.e it seems much more like a channel 10 show for sure.
Good to see Close to Home numbers dropping off. Hopefully people are going over to Andrew Denton. Lately his interviewees have been boring people, so I hope it picks up. He really is the best interviewer this country has seen.

  • by Dr DK on June 06, 2006 at 10:16 AM

if grey's anatomy is going to be on mondays at 9.30 (excellent!!) where is commander in chief moving to? there's more than two weeks left in the series isn't there?

Tribal Mind replies: Seven says it will show all 19 episodes, so presumably there will be double eps in the next two weeks.

  • by lauren on June 06, 2006 at 10:51 AM

So if CIC goes to double episodes, what do you think Ch7 will do with Boston Legal? Push it back another hour to 11.30pm or move it to another day?

  • by pete on June 06, 2006 at 11:31 AM

"Meanwhile, it's pretty clear that movies don't work on TV any more. People aren't willing to put up with so many ad breaks and have usually seen most movies already at the cinema, DVD or Foxtel."
J Bar at June 6, 2006 09:57 AM
the ratings for love acctually when it was on on mothers day would suggest otherwise.

Tribal Mind replies: But at 1.4 million, it was the most watched movie of the year. Movies used to get 2 million.

  • by dan on June 06, 2006 at 11:36 AM

"100 jobs to go at Channel 9"
Hope Jessica and Karl put their hands up for the voluntary redundancy.

Tribal Mind replies: Seems an odd way to improve the news service.

  • by Nigel on June 06, 2006 at 12:04 PM

TM - Can you please tell me what the ratings were for Boston Legal last night? Yes...putting on Grey's at 9.30 Monday is starting to look like a smart move now. I hope Seven doesn't put screen Boston Legal at an even later time.

Tribal Mind replies: 513,000.

  • by Helena on June 06, 2006 at 12:13 PM

What is this show CIC people are talking about? Is Charles In Charge back on? I hope so...Gwendoline Pearce was sensational.

  • by Dr DK on June 06, 2006 at 12:17 PM

TM, have you heard anything about when the latest series of Alias will be screened? The last season was a bit of an effort to watch (any fans out there...do you agree the whole APO thing was a bit much?) but it had a fantastic ending, a real cliffhanger.

Tribal Mind replies: Seven will not give dates for shows more than three weeks ahead. Alias has not been mentioned in Seven's recent publicity, which suggests a silly season slot.

  • by Kelli M on June 06, 2006 at 12:53 PM

how did CIC go against close to home last night?
Thanks

Tribal Mind replies: read the column above, where that information has been since 10 am today. Indeed, that was the whole point of my remark about Grey's Anatomy.

  • by adam on June 06, 2006 at 12:54 PM

Commander In Chief might be moving to the Saturday night graveyard, where TV series go to die on Ch 7. Now that Blue Heelers is gone, there's room for another casualty.
They better not stuff up Boston Legal by showing it any later.

  • by J Bar on June 06, 2006 at 01:03 PM

TEN has signed up The Ronnie Johns Half Hour for another series for 06.
Seven should win this week with 29.4 vs 27.1 for nine so far.

  • by paora on June 06, 2006 at 01:27 PM

Monday night is one of my favourite viewing nights, but I must say that I think Close To Home will run out of steam fairly quickly.
The emphasis on the hardworking prosecutor balancing her private life/baby with the court room drama is not exactly original.
TM - how many Boston Legal's are left in this season, and what do you think Ch7 will do with it when they double up CIC, please??

Tribal Mind replies: I have no idea on either question. If you google BL plus the words "episode guide", you will find where we are up to.

  • by pete on June 06, 2006 at 01:29 PM

btw RIP Nate & SFU

  • by paora on June 06, 2006 at 01:38 PM

Channel 7 got sucked in to the hype surrounding Commander-in-Chief in the US( where it was perceived as an attempt to get Americans used to a female Democrat President), when it flopped in the US and the series got canned, Channel 7 does know what to do with it.
I hope they are not stupid enough to schedule Commander-in-Chief at the Boston legal timeslot, BL has some dedicated viewers and surely they will go to bed early or watch in another channel if Channel 7 replaces it.

  • by Greg H on June 06, 2006 at 01:47 PM

What are Channel Seven showing at 9.30 Thurs to replace The Amazing Race after the finale? Do they plan to show the Amazing Race Family series?

  • by Helena on June 06, 2006 at 01:48 PM

Thanks TM. Took your advice - there are 13 further episodes in the current season of BL. Hopefully Ch7 won't muck us around with it too much!

Tv.com has episode guides for everything by season. You can find what you're looking for there.

  • by Shane on June 06, 2006 at 02:29 PM

It has just been announced in the US that CIC has been axed by ABC (its US Network) at the end of its current season, so i dont think Seven will need to show it in Double Episodes at all...... they just wont have anything to show!!!
It Takes Two is sooooooooo boring!!!! I agree with what someone said above it is like Karaoke at your local RSL.... except that i work in an RSL and the Karaoke singers we have are soooo much better and dont look like Ken & Barbie. Stick to the weather Grant your better at it!!

This news should shake the ratings up in the next few weeks. Ch 7 is having a mid-season relaunch this year, like they do in America. Hopefully, this is the first step to having ratings all year round.
We already know Grey's Anatomy is screening 9.30 Mon from Jun 19 but they are also moving Ghost Whisperer 9.30 Tue from next week.
Now that Thank God You're Here has vacated the Wed comedy slot, they're jumping in there with How I Met Your Mother 7.30 & My Name Is Earl 8.00 Wed from June 21.
Channel 10 is running their big Aussie telemovie 'The Society Murders' that week too, on Sunday June 18 and are launching the American version of The Biggest Loser.

  • by J Bar on June 06, 2006 at 04:15 PM

pete, if you're a fan of american shows, you only need to remember 8 letters "epguides". Type any reasonably well know show with "epguides" into google and bobs your uncle. It shows the american viewing dates for a large number of shows (even if they were shown in some obscure date like in the 1960's). A vital resource if you're a rabid leecher.
Assuming that channel 7 has been a good boy and hasn't been swapping episodes around or leaving any out, and considering that last night's episode had a fixation with breasts. It would be safe to say that the episode shown is "Breast in show", episode 14 of the second season.
On a different note, Its amazing how well channel nine is doing without any dominating shows in the top 20 like channel seven and channel ten.
I'm not up to date with channel nine's future lineup, but the ones i know about are Invasion and Rome. Invasion is a reasonably suspenseful sci fi show(which just got cancelled), but it is wayyyyyyy too slow for australian audiences to give it a chance. Same thing with Rome, another quality production by HBO. Alot of sexual politics and history, but not alot of action scenes(abit surprising considering the 10 million US per episode cost). I doubt either will rate very well.
Channel seven on the other hand has some quality action drama on the way with 24 and the Unit on the way. I know that recent series of 24 hasn't rated well, but this season..... WOW, the first four episodes had so much action going on, and the rest of the season there is non-stop biffo, no more stupid Kim subplots(well, not really). If seven is clever with promotion for the first four episodes, I'm sure that audiences will grow.
The Unit is another quality action drama produced by everyone's favourite dialogue writer David Mamet and that guy who did the Shield. A show about the american anti-terrorism special forces Delta Force and is unique as there is particular focus on their families.
I know quality american shows doesn't necessarily rate well, as in the cases of Veronica Mars and Everybody hates chris but it seems that channel seven has poached just about every high rating and quality new show from the american tv schedule as show in your previous blog entries.
Channel nine may well have the last laugh as aussie tv viewers are fickle and don't always follow the normal trends but their international tv scouts should be sacked. Channel ten can be excused as they are targeting a different market segment than the two big dogs.

Has Bert's Family Feud getting better ratings or is about the same as a month ago, also how does channel 10 new go at 5pm.

Tribal Mind replies: Bert is doing well (690,000) these days, although far behind DOND and even further behind Ten's 5-6 news. Why do I get the feeling some of these questions are from people who already know the answer?

  • by John on June 06, 2006 at 05:25 PM

There are 13 more episodes of Boston Legal.
See http://epguides.com/
for details of most shows.

Hi TM. What are the latest Sunrise Vs Today ratings? is sunrise continuing to grow while today shrinks, or has it levelled off? Also, is sunrise a clear favourite in all capital cities?

Tribal Mind replies: Yes it grows, no it has not levelled off, and yes in all capitals. Sunrise average this year 370,000. Today 202,000. Or did you already know all that?

  • by paul on June 06, 2006 at 06:38 PM

paora, I'm with you. Hard to believe what happened to Nate - I actually feel bad blogging about it because it was so sad. Wasn't it just devastating? Even sadder was last week's episode...the final scene left me thinking for days about what was being represented, and the silence during the credits were a stroke of genius soundtrack-wise (so glad 9 didn't just play a voiceover promo for the next show to fill the silence, or at least WIN didn't). It actually left me feeling very empty, and hollow, and the next day I felt real grief (!) which I'm sure was intended. RIP Nate.

  • by Kelli M on June 06, 2006 at 07:24 PM

donnay - you seem not to know about program supply from the US that Seven and Nine get, so I'll give you a very brief run-down - it all comes down to output deals and nothing to do with "their international tv scouts" that you believe should be sacked (Nine's that is).
Nine gets all ALLIANCE, WARNER BROS, HBO, SONY, MGM, Lionsgate Entertainment, Regency and Dreamworks material.
Seven gets GRANADA, DISNEY, BUENA VISTA, 20TH CENTURY FOX (TIL 2007)
Ten gets NBCU (shared with Seven), 20TH CENTURY FOX (AFTER 2007)
I think those lists are still up to date.
Cheers :)

Tribal Mind asks: Knowing the names of the production houses does not tell us which shows are attached to each network. Can you kindly explain that too?

  • by Knucklehead on June 06, 2006 at 07:37 PM

Who the hell is Nate?

Tribal Mind replies: A character in Six Feet Under.

  • by Helema on June 06, 2006 at 08:09 PM

Knucklehead says:
Nine gets all ALLIANCE, WARNER BROS, HBO, SONY, MGM, Lionsgate Entertainment, Regency and Dreamworks material.
Seven gets GRANADA, DISNEY-BUENA VISTA, 20TH CENTURY FOX (TIL 2007)
Ten gets NBC Universal (shared with Seven), 20TH CENTURY FOX (AFTER 2007)
Ten also gets TV programs produced or distributed by Viacom/Paramount, but I think movies made by Paramount are shared by the three networks. And Ten does show Warner Bros programs that Nine doesn't want (The O.C., Smallville and Supernatural are three good examples).
I have a question of my own: now that Nine gets access to MGM movies, does that mean we may see it show the James Bond collection in the future (Casion Royale is due for release later this year)?

  • by Johnson on June 06, 2006 at 09:04 PM

Excuse the ignorance, but who is this Nate that Kelli and Paora are talking about?
I saw on Amazon that Boston Legal season 1 just came out on DVD. I'm tempted to get it. The few season 2 eps I've caught on 7 have been a lot of fun.
Thanks for the info knucklehead.... I knew that the networks were tied to output deals by studio but didn't know who had what.
Nine have blown it with a few good HBO shows..... Entourage, Curb Your Enthusiasm etc.... great shows but don't fit their over 50 demographic.

  • by downloader on June 06, 2006 at 09:06 PM

knucklehead, I see, that makes alot more sense then. Was wondering why Channel nine got alot of CBS's top programs but Channel seven got The Unit and How I met your mother.

  • by donnay on June 06, 2006 at 09:13 PM

Hey
Some people frantic over nothing. Annoyed at Channel 7 because Commander in Chief will move there or when CIC doubles up or whatever and Boston Legal will be inconvienenced.
Whoa! Hang on!
Boston Legal is staying right where it is. It is scheduled every Monday night for the forseeable future. Commander in Chief will have a total of 4 unaired episodes when it is pulled next week for Grey's Anatomy. Those 4 eps have not been scheduled at all. They may pop up late night somewhere else soon or may just be used later in the year or summer.
So don't jump to conclusions. Boston Legal is fine.
Stargate and Atlantis fans should start jumping for you. Both shows will be back in 3 weeks at around 11pm.
Go Channel 7 - showing American Dad, Family Guy, Scrubs, Arrested Development, Airline USA, Mile High, Point Pleasant, Stargate, Atlantis, Accoding to Jim and even Passions early in the morning.
AARON

Tribal Minds replies: Aaron, with your uncanny predictive powers, can you tell us the timing of new shows such as Bones, My Name Is Earl, Criminal Minds, 24, etc?

  • by Aaron on June 06, 2006 at 11:34 PM

Can anyone please explain to me how Eddy axing 100 jobs in the Ch9 news and current affairs department could possibly be part of a revamp to stay ahead of the game? Can losing 100 staff send them any way but backwards?
http://www.smh.com.au/news/business/mcguire-axes-100-nine-news-jobs/2006/06/06/1149359714901.html
With the success of his casinos but the decline in TV advertising, could young Packer possibly be looking to trim costs ready for sale?

  • by Tracker on June 07, 2006 at 12:12 AM

* I must say that I already find the news & current affairs services of commercial TV networks to be wretched (Yes, that is Ch 7, 9 and 10). It would be hard to imagine how appalling Ch.9 news would become by cutting 100 jobs.
* Maybe Eddie's plan is to make the news so bad, that people start talking about it at work and then tune in to see how Ch.9 will stuff up next.(Example- the Jessica Rowe and Brigadier Mic Slater incident on the TODAY show. I know you all tuned in the day after downloading the clip, to see how Jess reacted to such a stuff up).
* Looking at the Oztam ratings though, it appears that less, and less people are even turning on their TV sets. I mean, the most watched show of the week at 1.67mil? and last week was the coldest and wettest I can remember for months!!
Have we moved so fast in the age of broadband media that we are witnessing the slow painfull death of FTA TV?
* All I can say is, careful MacBank, you do not want to be the next Alan Bond, to the next Packer?

  • by seam on June 07, 2006 at 01:42 AM

Tracker asks."Can anyone please explain to me how Eddy axing 100 jobs in the Ch9 news and current affairs department could possibly be part of a revamp to stay ahead of the game? Can losing 100 staff send them any way but backwards?"
Well Tracker if one of those 100 is Jessica Rowe, I can see how it could help improve them. If she were to be one of them - or to be moved to another program as a direct result of the sackings there is no dobt the channels news presentations would be improved dramatically and maybe it takes mass sackings to hide her removal to save face, who knows.
On a totally different subject, I watched All Saints last night for the first time in over a year and wonder if anyone else noticed the similarity between the storylines and other "medical" programs like House.
Apart from the hetro sexual, then lesbien, then pregnant, then hetro, then lesbien and apparently upcoming, soon to be born-again hetro Charlotte many of the cast have changed - or at least changed characters and/or roles. But apart from that there are obvious glimpses of other shows.
Last night they had trouble diagnosing two patients and in the case of one, a staff member went to the persons home to find the cause of infection - a la House.
They have the Grumpy old doctor as the head of the Emergency department who's health is a contributor to his poor temperament - a la House.
They have the ex wife of the grumpy doc working at the Hospital interfering and overlapping with him till "one of them HAS to go" a la House.
There is a young intern who seems very like a mix of characters from Greys and John Waters character looks a little like an ageing Patrick Dempsey and has his amazing skill and confidance.
He also insists on loud music while he operates and that is reminiscent of another character from a medical series, though I can't be sure which one.
I guess it is safe to copy a successful formula - or several in this case, but surely the writers could be less obvious about their theft. Forensic don't need to take finger prints to prove guilt, they found the writers fingers at the scene - or was it their toes?

My Name is Earl premieres 8:00 Wednesday 21st
24 will be Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9:30, double eps 21st/22nd, single eps after that
that means Family Guy is at 11:30 on the 22nd, 10:30 after that (5 eps left from memory)
and Stargate SG1 goes to 11:00 Thursdays from the 29th
which means Scrubs is gone from Thursdays after the 15th

Aaron, I don't know how relevant it is but June is when most uni students around australia are having exams (cough)
infact not only australians..... wasn't there that news story recently about how bangladeshi uni students rioting in reaction to admin not changing exam dates till after the world cup?

  • by donnay on June 07, 2006 at 09:33 AM

Oh dear. Last night's episode of The Wedge was dire. I suffered through it for about 15 minutes before I concluded that it is already rehashing tired, unfunny material - 2 weeks into its run.

For Australian comedy to succeed, it needs one thing only - to be FUNNY!

  • by pete on June 07, 2006 at 10:07 AM

David H, Good point about the similarities between All Saints and House. I also noticed that they seem to have 'borrowed' the idea of the doctor and/or nurse invading a patient's home to discover the cause of an illness. That was quite obvious.

However, in defence of the grumpy doctor dealing with his admin head ex-wife, although there are similarities, 'All Saints' did it first. Dr Frank Campion has been there for two years and the prickly relationship with his ex-wife was there from the start. You can't accuse them of copying that idea because 'All Saints' actually did it first. As for any other similarities with other hospital dramas, I would say that's inevitable. There's only so many stories that can be told and they're all variations on a theme.

It's like saying 'Desperate Housewives' is just copying 'Neighbours' because they're both soapies set in a suburban neighbourhood. Some things that have happened on DH, happened on Neighbours last year or ten years ago or even twenty years ago.

There's a theory that there are only Seven Basic Plots in all story-telling. Every story is a variation on those basic plots. So everything new is just something old that has been recycled.

  • by J Bar on June 07, 2006 at 10:37 AM

Hey
I would let people know to be wary of some of the info posted here. Someone about 2 or 3 posts below has said that How I Met Your Mother and My Name is Earl will premiere Wednesday June 21st. That is incorrect information. Beyond Tomorrow is still scheduled.
The post is correct about 24 BUT that is not giving away much. The actual adverts say June 21st. So it will have a double ep on June 21st at 9:30 and also again the very next night at 9:30 as well. Then single eps from the following week.
In regards to Criminal Minds and Bones etc - way too early to give people info. If I was to say a date in July then people would be commenting for weeks but because it is so far in advance - Seven may change their mind and then people get annoyed. Lets wait until its a couple of weeks out.

SPOILER ALERT ... Downloader, as TM answered below, Nate is a character in the show Six Feet Under. In fact, the mainest of the main characters. It's a show about a family who runs a funeral house, so deaths are especially important in this show. Didn't mean to be mysterious, it just has seemed in the past that most people in this blog watch the show, so I didn't bother to explain the context. If you haven't seen SFU, I recommend downloading it :) Ch9 is currently screening the final few episodes of the last series on Mondays at 10.30, or 10.50, or midnight, depending on which side of the bed they wake up on on programming day.

I watched the first episode of The Wedge last week and it was unfunny, awful and painful to watch. Always hopeful, I did not laugh once. Understandably I didn't return last night. The sooner Ten axes it the better.
There's only 2 shows worth watching on Tuesday evening; Border Security and new Simpsons. Of course they are on at the same time.
Do me a favour Ten.

Would someone give a newbie step by step guide to bittorrents please ? Some time ago Tribal Mind offered a book prize for the most informative guide to torrenting , but maybe I missed it ? I've searched the archives but couldn't find reference to it . Thanks in advance

Tribal Mind comments: Nobody won the prize because nobody explained it in language a moron like me could understand. Those who responded felt they had to use jargon. The prize is still on offer: please explain in normal english how a person with an ordinary computer can download programs that have been shown on American television.

I was surprised to stumble upon Mile High at 11pm Tuesday night. I wonder why Seven wasted this show at such a late time? Mile High is comparable to Nine's Hotel Babylon (was at 9.30pm Monday) and I believe is as good as, if not better than HB. If properly promoted, it could get up to 1 million viewers, I reckon. Any fan of this show (last shown in 2004) out there?

In reply to TM asking where to download US shows and for anyone else willing to know i found some sites for the OC, Desperate Housewives and Lost where you can download episodes which are only 60 megabytes. these are www.ocfansforum.org , www.watchlost.com , and www.housewives-media.com

  • by Brendon on June 07, 2006 at 06:13 PM

This may seem stupid, but I would have thoguht that Channel 7 would have scheduled Bones on Wednesday 7.30pm. Because since you have PB and 24, which are two action shows, they should've tied in with the themem instead of putting on a comedy show. let us know someone when you're sure of the dates.

Explanation of Bit Torrent:

Download and install 'Bit Torrent'. Here is the link:
http://download.bittorrent.com/dl/BitTorrent-Stable.exe

Then, you go to:
http://www.mininova.org/
and search what you want to download.

Click on the one you want and download what is called a 'torrent' (they are only about 70kb - tiny).

Then you open up Bit Torrent (after you have downloaded and installed it). Click 'File' and select 'Open Torrent File'. Choose the torrent from where you saved it onto your computer.

It will then appear in your Bit Torrent window, right click the clock logo next to the torrent and select 'Download Now'. Bit Torrent will then download the file from multiple sources.

Depending on how popular, how big the file is and how fast your internet connection is, it will take a day or 2. If you need to turn your computer off mid-download or disconnect from the internet, just close Bit Torrent and when you restart, it will resume downloading from where you left off.

Thats pretty much as simple as one can put it. Do I get the book? :)

PS. Limewire, is also a good option.

  • by William on June 07, 2006 at 06:23 PM

Newbie guide to bit-torrents:
1 - get a "torrent client" - good ones are uTorrent and Azureus - look on google.com.au to download. This program acts as a "download manager" and you can easily set up where to store the files (TV shows) you download in a directory of your choice on your hard drive. (Options|Preferences|Downloads in uTorrent)
2 - find the TV shows you want to watch (these are called torrents). You can get good torrents from mininova.org and tvtorrents.net - again, typing in "tv show torrents" in google will help you immensely.
3 - This is the important one for show junkies - buy a DVD player than can play DivX ($80 or so at Dick Smith) - that way 10 or more episodes can fit on one burnt DVD. Alternatively, you can simply watch the shows on your computer monitor, with programs such as Windows Media Player or VLC. Again, google.com.au will help you find these. WMP should be standard on Windows machines.
4 - when you find a file you want to download on mininova or tvtorrents.net, if you are using Windows right-click on that file, save-as and keep the small torrent file on your desktop. Then double-click on that file and it should now be in your download manager (such as utorrent).
5 - If you're on dial-up - give it up now. You won't keep up and it will be like treading water out to sea. If you're on 1500 ADSL, you can get a file in less than 1 hour - 2-3 hours if you're on 512 ADSL.
6 - when the file is finished in your download manager (100%) - find the file in the directory you used in the setup (see 1) and double-click to play on computer. If you want to watch it on DVD, make sure it plays DivX and burn the episode in Nero onto DVD+RW. That way you can erase the disc and use it again.
Hope that helps you. About as simple as I can make it I'm afraid.

  • by Mark on June 07, 2006 at 06:35 PM

TM,
I know you always post the figures for Daniel at the end of the week or whenever, but last night's The Bill was a Live episode. Could you please tell us the figure.
Thanks.
And I agree you do deserve paying.

  • by Sarah on June 07, 2006 at 06:38 PM

Well despite Mark's admirable attempt to explain Bit Torrents my mind still boggles at an alarming rate.
Here's another one for the techheads:
I've noted in various stores some DVD players that claim to be 'multi-zoned' (e.g. there is a Sony unit at my local BigDubya). Are these the same as multi-region and could I play region 1 DVDs on such an animal?
I ask as there is a plethora of TV available in the US that is not presently available here.
Forever in the responder's debt.

Working Dog, what the hell were you thinking? What was the point of having Kate Langbroek on youre finale'???
They had the four funniest comedians on the show tonight, then her. Spoonfed her all the way. It was awful and unfunny. It seemed rehearsed and too smooth.
At least when FiFi Box is on, she' atrocious but she's thrown in the deep end. Langbroek was barely paddling.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on June 07, 2006 at 08:53 PM

Something is wrong at the ABC, during Spicks and Specks, they spelt "received" as "recieved". It may be one of their more popular shows, but still there is no need to dumb it down. Either that or all their proof-readers had the night off. Spelling mistakes are one (acceptable) thing on blogs, but the ABC?

  • by tristan on June 07, 2006 at 09:39 PM

To all SFU devotees out there - we are united in our grief on Nates death. This is the greatest TV drama ever.....so looking forward to the final eopisodes but so sad its almost over......RIP.

  • by DebGale on June 07, 2006 at 09:59 PM

You don't really need to "save" the torrent file. Once you've installed the torrent program (such as uTorrent, or I recommend using "BitComet"), open it, and then you can go to the torrent sites such as mininova.org or torrentspy.com and search for the shows you want to watch. After searching, simply click on the name of the file of the show you want to watch, and you will arrive at a new page, then click on the name of the file again, or the button that says "download torrent." Then when the next prompt pops up, just press open, and the file should open in the program you had installed and opened. Click "ok" (at this pop up window, you can select where the downloaded show will be saved to) and it should start downloading the file.

I think Limewire(a program where you can directly download files rather than downloading torrents) is great for songs, and some shows. I can never seem to find "House" using Limewire

I guess you can say a torrent is an unique id for a file.

  • by Jasmine on June 07, 2006 at 10:20 PM

There are plenty of guides out there already. As someone has already mentioned, the most popular torrent programs are Azureus and utorrent. It is impossible to show you how to use torrents simply without actually showing it to you step by step with pictures and thats what tutorial guides are for. Many have already been written. Use your googling skills.
However there are some important points that you have to take into consideration. I'm sorry if this is a long post, but there is a alot of things to you have to remember.
Imagine bittorrent as a metophoric card swapping endeavor. A file that you want to download is made up of a number of trading cards that you have to get to complete your collection.
A Seed or Seeder is someone who already has all the cards. He is distributing copies of his cards to Peers, people who want to complete their collection.
When you start up your torrent client(the program), you have no cards so expect your downloading to start slow as you beg others to give you some cards. As you get more cards, your download will gradually increase. As you have more cards that other peers want, they are more willing to give you some copies of their cards.
That is the philosophy of bittorrent: The faster you upload, the faster your download speed (not always true unfortunately)
This is what puts off most newbies at first. They are not patient.
Another important thing to consider is that download speed will be not be consistent. Remember the metaphor about trading cards. When you start out, you have no trading cards so your download speed is slow. When you have nearly completed your download, there are times when your download speed will drop dramatically. The cards you need to complete your collection are getting harder to find as you reach the end. BE PATIENT.
Other things that affect your download speed is the number of seeds and peers participating in the torrent. When you visit torrent sites like Mininova.org, they will show you how "healthy" your torrent by the number of people that are uploading and downloading the file.
With regards to single episodes of tv shows, torrents are most healthy up to several weeks after they have been released, depending on popularity.
Unfortunately for aussies just starting out, the main american tv season has just finished. The majority of the early episodes are already quite old and there are probably not many peers and seeds left (Thats why epguides.com is so important, check out when the show you want to download is going to be shown, the torrent will probably be released soon after.)
However do not despair, people have collected all the episodes of different shows into one big file (could be several gigabytes in size) for others to download. These tv show season torrents last alot longer. As it takes more time for people to complete their card collection, they will have to stay longer to swap with other peers. Unfortunately they could take several days to complete.
ALSO, with bittorrent programs, you can tweak it to set how fast you want your upload speed to be. I know I said the faster your upload, the faster your download, but because ADSL has such slow uploading speeds, if you set it too high, it could dramatically affect your download speed. Aim for around 60 - 80 percent of your maximum upload speed.
Another thing that could affect your download (YES I know ANOTHER ONE) is whether you are using a router or firewall (google to see what they mean, the post is already too long) to connect to your broadband internet.
If you are then you have to do what a procedure called PORTFORWARDING, otherwise your downloads will always stay slow.
It is too long to explain
Go to http://www.portforward.com/ and follow the links to the brand of your router and follow the instructions.
PHEW I hope I haven't forgotten anything!!!.
I know the majority of people will read this post and go "WTF, there is too many things to remember" and immediately give up.
Did you drive your car like a pro after your first driving lesson? Of course not!!
Give it a try first. There will be inevitably something that will go wrong. Google for instructions or ask for help here. I'm sure there are plenty of people here willing to give you some tips.
Remember to be patient. Using torrents is not like going to a store and asking for something. Its like a Card trading convention :P
PS: as web filehosting is now so cheap, there is plenty of Messageboards out there that aim to give out HTTP links to things like tv shows (HTTP links are the easy stuff to download, you know: right-click and save).
I don't want to give out my favourite one out on a public site, but for people who are having trouble with torrents
register for free at http://www.xsharex.info

  • by donnay on June 08, 2006 at 12:45 AM

On second thought, William down below is right, the basic bittorent client is best to use for beginners instead of azureus or utorrent.
William has given the link below.
http://download.bittorrent.com/dl/BitTorrent-Stable.exe
This way, you don't have to worry about setting your upload and download speeds. It might not be at its maximum potential but it should still run good.
However you still have to worry about portforwarding and also remember to be patient.

  • by donnay on June 08, 2006 at 01:16 AM

Thank God You're Here was the best show this year by far. Just unfortunate they had Kate Langbroek on and for no apparent reason. Being a fifth wheel, it seems they may have been forced to add her in for some possible upcoming show that she will appear on? Or maybe her radio station got her in there. After her performance, I was saying "Thank God you've gone".
They had their best two comedians, Angus Sampson and Sean Macauliffe which was a good note to end on. Kate should stick to dancing which she only mildly sucks at.

Thanks to those who responded with bittorrent advice . William's was brief and I still couldn't have " torrented" from his advice , whereas Mark and Donnay offered in-depth advice even a newbie like me could follow . Thanks to all . Could they share a book maybe , LOL !! Limewire is crap for anything but mp3's

I ask as there is a plethora of TV available in the US that is not presently available here.
Forever in the responder's debt.

go to amazon.com, type in an tv show you can think of even the older shows from the 70's 80's etc and oyu will find most are now available on dvd long before they are released here some most likely will not be released here as they don't think there is a market for them

Slippery Sam has asked "I've noted in various stores some DVD players that claim to be 'multi-zoned' ... Are these the same as multi-region and could I play region 1 DVDs on such an animal?"
The answer is yes, if it says "multi-region" or "multi-zone" but NOT if it says multi-format (which simply means it can play DVD-Rs, CD-Rs, MP3s etc).
But nowadays virtually any DVD player (even if originally locked into the Reguion 4 format) can easily be converted into a multi-region DVD player by entering a code via the remote control - most places that sell DVDs are generally aware of the codes and can even do this for you (except the big chain department stores like Myers and DJs which I have found to be most unhelpful in this respect), but others like JB HiFi, Retravision, Harvey Norman etc are generally quite willing to do this, but you do need to ask for it, as they won't always volunteer it.

Spectacular ratings for TGYH and what a huge boost for House. But I'm glad that McLeods Daughters was mostly unaffected. I assume Beyond Tomorrow must have been the real disaster for Ch 7?
Does anybody know anything about those David Tench quotes that Ch 10 keep slipping in everywhere? I assume that they are tease for a new show, rather than an advert but can't find anything on the net. I haven't heard about any new Aussie shows that they have planned apart for a mini-series called Tripping Over for much later in the year. Any ideas?

Who is ahead for the week?

Tribal Mind replies: Seven

  • by jak on June 08, 2006 at 11:23 AM

Slippery Sam -
Multi Region and Multi Zone are the same thing, and will allow you to watch DVDs from the USA.
It's usually possible to unzone your DVD player by entering a code via your remote. These can be found at http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks

Torrents are good for current shows on the US. So if it's the current US season use. I find other sites such as Bearshare to be great at getting the less recent episodes of a show and some classic shows as well. For instance, I was able to download episodes of The Night Stalker (a show made in the 1970s). I have also downloaded House from there, when utorrent has failed me. I am now currently going through Season 1 of the Sopranos.

Thanks to those who posted BT guides... I did one a few months ago on here and couldn't be bothered doing it again. Sorry!
Some tips though;
I find www.torrentspy.com to be great for finding torrents. If I can't find it there I use www.mininova.org and there are new ones popping up all the time.
One problem with Bit Torrents though is that there is a tendency for seeders (file sharers) to drop dramatically in the weeks and months after the show has aired.
Once a season has completely aired in the US you tend to find the whole season in one BT file easier than you can find all the individual episodes. That means you can be downloading a 5 or 6 gig file (to get a complete season) instead of a 350 meg file (for anindividual ep).
If you are only after a handful of episodes (and they aired a while ago) it's probably easier to find them on Limewire instead of BitTorrent.
I totally disagree with Jane Doe's assertion that "Limewire is crap for anything other than MP3s"
Case in point: Channel 10 yanked Veronica Mars partway through the season here with no sign of it coming back soon. Searching the above stated BT URLS (as well as the others mentioned by various guides) proved useless. That season had aired a year earlier in the US so individual eps were poorly seeded or unavailable for download anymore.
I found all eps I needed on Limewire... the key is to know how to search for them. Instead of just searching for Veronica Mars, search more specifically like Veronica Mars 1x09, Veronica Mars 109 hdtv, or Veronica Mars s01e09 hdtv.
By putting the season and episode number in the search field as well as hdtv (most of the good files being shared are captured from hdtv broadcasts) you can generally find plenty of users sharing the eps you want.
Personally , as a general rule I use BitTorrent for recently aired shows and Limewire for older ones.
If BT intimidates you or you can't be bothered trying to learn how to do it (sure its easy but effort is involved) I recommend Limewire. Its easy to use. BT is definitley the way to go if you want to download something within hours of its airing in the US though. Limewire generally takes a little longer to get newer files (still only a day or two though.)
Good luck... I recommend it. No ads and you can watch it whenever, you don't ahve to wait until our networks decide to air (or not air in many cases.)
PS I don't get the hate towards Kate Langbrook... sure her skit was the weakest but Fifi has been overused. I'd like to see the woman from the bed/mattress (?) commercials again though. She's funny.

Prison Break was fantastic last night as it is every week. TM - Why is Prison Break not on next week? Are they saving it to pair up with 24? Hope the ratings for Prison Break pick up now that Thank God You're Here is finished and House doesn't have it as a lead in. Channl 7 need to do better than Beyond Tomorrow. TGYH was great also - with the exception of Kate whose presence was really unnecessary. I used to like Kate before but now find her increasingly annoying.
Can't wait for the Amazing Race finale tonight. I have resisted the urge to find out on the net who wins as I want it to be surprise. I really enjoy Thurs nights as Las Vegas and Lost are on as well.

btw, I forgot to respond to the question about American TV shows.
to check whats new I often look at
www.cbs.com
www.nbc.com
www.abc.com
www.fox.com
www.hbo.com
Thats the major networks sites, plus HBO (cable TV)
If I see something there that appeals to me I either look on Amazon for the DVD set or I download it.
Another good site is www.tvshowsondvd.com for news on releases etc. Region 1 (USA) specific but worth checking out for importing from Amazon and others.
A good Region 4 (Australia) site for DVD reviews and comparisons to Region 1 releases is www.michaeldvd.com.au (of whick I am a humble unpaid DVD reviewer... TM isn't the only one who works for love!!)
Anyway, hope this helps!!

Someone asked, can anyone except working dog do Aussie comedy?
Historically, all good Aussie comedy comes from D-Gen - Fast forward, working dog, mick molloy/tony martin, kath and kim and so on.
Comedy company alumni have their moments, but are fading fast as per the Wedge. Then you can look at people like Shaun Micalef and Andrew Denton. The only new light on the horizon is The Chaser.
Ahh, where would we be with out the ABC. Commercial televison cannot create comedians. The best they can do is Rove (I am sure Rove is very good at what he does, but he is not a comedian).
Have a look at the US though, the most innvoative comedic show on TV and the best show at developing comedians is SNL (John Belushi, Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, David Spade, Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, the list goes on). It shows late night and has a very niche audience (its just the niches are big in the US).
IN my view we cannot expect commercial TV to develop comedy as there will never be the audience to sustain anything but the most broad comedy - this is why we end up with sketch comedy all the time on commercial TV. Maybe Ch 10 have stepped out of the mould with TGYH, but if you think they would have gone with it is a couple of "unknowns" came to them with it - you are delusional. The working dog brand got it to air (as it should).
This is why the ABC has the most success, and why the destruction of the ABC by the current government is as much a travesty for comedy as it is for drama,

Prison Break is a bloody good show. However, for me,it drags on to long and thats my reason I stoped watching it two weeks ago. That may be the reason why most viewers turned of it.
I fail to understand "Fast Eddies Hit list". How can you have quality with limited staff? What do you think TM?
