Hot off the presses: Channel Seven has just revealed that the new season of 'Grey's Anatomy' will start on Monday June 19, replacing Commander in Chief at 9.30pm. At first sight, this looks like a bizarre bit of scheduling. Shown in an 8.30 slot last year, Grey's was getting an audience around 1.8 milion in the mainland capitals. Is Seven wasting a prime property at a time when half of Australia is putting on its jamies?
Updated 10 am, Sunday June 4.
In a week without special events -- no miners, no Logies, no big biffo -- Nine scraped to victory by one tenth of one per cent of the audience. Its prime time share for the week in the mainland capitals was 27.8 per cent, while Seven got 27.7 per cent, Ten got 25.1, the ABC got 14.6 and SBS got 4.8. The addition of Grey's Anatomy (and My Name Is Earl, Bones and Criminal Mnds) could make all the difference for Seven. But then again, Nine has plenty more biffo in store.
If you had to predict the year at this point, you'd say Nine will win (but down a bit on last year), Seven will come second (but up a bit), and Ten will be third (up a lot). The ABC will be down a lot (but won't care) and SBS will be up a lot because of soccer.

The fans came back in a big way for Thursday night's episode of 'Lost', in which we learned that "The Others" are not hillbillies but scientists with fake beards, and we got alarmed at how skeletal Claire has become since giving birth.
An extra 200,000 viewers over the previous Thursday meant that Seven won the night. Perhaps the viewers were excited that the main role was played by Melbourne's own Emilie de Ravin. Seven also has high hopes for Sunday night (usually won by Nine), because it is showing the final episode of 'Blue Heelers'. Over its 12 years, Heelers has reached peaks of 2.5 million. If most of those viewers come back for a last goodbye, Seven will start winter with a bang.
Channel Ten tells us it will mark the end of 'Thank God You're Here' next Wednesday with a sign that the future has arrived. The final episode will be available for downloading into your computer or watching as a streamed version from 11pm on June 7 at this address: www.ten.com.au/thankgod . Ten says: "This is the first time an Australian commercial TV network has made an entire program episode available free of charge straight after broadcast".
Apparently Nine made an ep of McLeod's Daughters available for download recently. Did anybody try to see it?

Sheer frustration is driving viewers away from 'Prison Break'. The fans are sick of seeing them NOT get out of jail and are turning to Dr House for a cure. Seven's response to this frustration is to show double episodes each week, in order to proceed more quickly to the escape (yes it does happen eventually) and then launch a new show that will prove a worthier competitor to the grumpy doc.
Ten easily wins each Wednesday night, but everything depends on how it replaces 'Thank God You're Here', which has one more week to run.

Paranoia is back in town, and with it, the hopes of Channel Seven. Canned laughter is back in town, and with it, the hopes of Channel Ten.
Two million Australians in the mainland capitals watched 'Border Security' last night, perhaps seeking reassurance that we are not about to be overrun by gangs of rampaging East Timorese. And 1.5 million sat through 'The Wedge', perhaps hoping it would join the resurgence in local comedy started by 'Thank God You're Here'.
Click here for Tom Gleisner's opinion on being told when to laugh. If he's right in his assessment of Australian attitudes, 'The Wedge' (created by Ian McFadyen of 'The Comedy Company') has no future.
Seven won the night, with a prime time audience share of 30.2 per cent, with Nine on 27.4, Ten on 24.3, ABC on 13.6 and SBS on 4.5. Nine and Seven are neck and neck (on 29.6 per cent for the week so far), with tonight's two hour 'Prison Break' likely to be the tie-breaker. Meanwhile, Ten will pull audiences from both Seven and Nine tonight with the second-last episode of a local sketch show that contains genuine laughter from an audience in the same room as the performers.
Tragically, 'Comedy Inc The Late Shift', a much smarter package than 'The Wedge', gathered a mere 585,000 viewers last night.

Channel Nine targeted women last night with two new shows, and won the night. Despite looking like a clone of 'Cold Case' (or perhaps because of looking like a clone of 'Cold Case') the US crime drama 'Close To Home' (1.1m) beat Seven's 'Commander in Chief' (924,000) at 9.30pm, and at 7.30 'What's Good For You', a clone of 'You Are What You Eat', collected the older viewers who wouldn't dream of watching Big Brother.
Nine's prime time audience share was 28.4 per cent, with Seven on 27.8, Ten on 23.4, the ABC on 14.6 and SBS on 5.8.

Apparently viewers on Sunday nights prefer escapist drama to drama that is too close to reality. Both 'CSI' and 'Law and Order' did better than 'Answered By Fire', the ABC's miniseries about East Timor, despite publicity about its postponement (to avoid competing with Nine's miners) and ongoing news coverage of Timor's troubles.
When we say "close to reality", of course we mean based on actual events, as opposed to the virtual version of reality offered by 'Big Brother'. Ten's gimmick of an alleged lie detector test fooled a few viewers at 6.30, but there was greater interest in the eviction of mischievous Michael at 8pm. Now he's gone, expect BB's ratings to plummet.
'It Takes Two', Seven's vocal version of 'Dancing With The Stars', did pretty well at 6.30, but not well enough to give Seven a victory. Nine won the night with 28.0 per cent of the prime time audience, followed by Seven on 26.0, Ten on 25.6, the ABC on 15.7 and SBS on 4.8.

7 would have to be happy with that, they usually do terribly on Sundays and It Takes Two was never going to do exactly as well as Dancing with the Stars.
Did anyone else find the co-host on ITT really irritating and amateurish? After a contestent revealed that her chosen charity was MS, because she had lost her dad to MS, the co-host tackily turned to the camera and said "love you dad, I'll call you later". How tacky and unproffessional.
OMG that was such a fantastic show on ABC tonight. David Wenham still has it big time but it was gripping on the edge of your seat stuff. Only complaint is why can't we have more of this quality drama!
Started watching ITT...changed channels after watching Kate Ritchie.
Recorded then watched ITT last night, was bored out of my brains, I knew about 3 of the celebrities and the same with the singers, the judges on the show seemed to not be needed, and the contestants seemed to take them selves to seriously except for Judy Nunn, who looked as though she had a few too many drinks to calm her nerves.
I found Big Brother far more interesting yet was still dissapointed with the twist, hopefully they will show the housemates how each person answered there questions. I dont think the ratings will fall terribly because Michael left, I found myself switching off the past few weeks because he was in the house. The next few weeks should be good and it is starting to pick up momentum as peopple are starting to get on peoples nerves.
Has anyone been watching teh Today show lately? Apparantly they have already started a major re-tooling of the show for next year with more news less info-tainment I think I will still watch sunrise though.
I think ITT was not too bad for its first run. There were a few hickups, but pretty good. Now all 7 have to do is find something good for 8.30 and it might win the night.
I thought Big Brother was great, especially Gretel for having it all over Michael who obviously thinks he is exceptionally smart with his over articluated use of words. I dont think BB's ratings will diminish with Michael gone, but BB does need to step it up a bit.
ITT was pretty booooring last night, no where near as upbeat as idol, and not entertaining enough, for example Simone Reeves is just like Grant Denyer the 2nd but without the charm
Ignored ITT, watch BB instead. Then watched Bourne Supremecy on DVD while Tshifting CSI and L&O to later in the week when there's nothing of interest on FTA.
Answered by Fire is another Marking Time: brilliant, timely and unlikely to be watched by the people who really need to see it.
I just want to say that Answered by Fire was fantastic and everyone is fantastic especially the East Timorese actors. Everyone who did not watch really has missed out but I guess reality is hard to digest especially when all the pain and suffering caused both in 1999 and today could have all be avoided had our governments acted. Just want to congratulate the ABC and everyone who has funded such a moving and profound piece of television.
I was quite excited about It Takes Two, and i'm a big fan of 7, but last night's epidsode was horrible. The host and especially the co-host seemed like two fish out of water and the judges, especially Simon, were rather annoying. I enjoyed what little singing happened between ad breaks and judges ranting, but couldn't force myself to follow the program all the way through to the end.
My guess is that as It Takes Two goes on, it's ratings will plummmet to around 1.3-1.4 million and maybe as low as 1.0 million. (Sort of like Commander In Chief and Prison Break.) It only rated as well as it did last night because it was coming off the with Dancing with the Stars glow.
RE: It Takes Two co-host Posted by: Queenslander at May 29, 2006 10:22 AM, ; I cringed at the time when she responded to MS issue and thought she was just way out of her league. Not sure what's her name, but she tried too hard (try to copy Sonia maybe) and failed badly. Also, I think she is way too young. ITT is not DWTS and the show was boring with Grant in the Trying Too Hard basket. I think he will probably go the same way as Tom Williams, getting one big gig after DWTS (Tom got The Mole) and then fizzle out. Seven should have hired either Dicko or Todd McKenny. Both would have done a better job I reckon. Now that I can compare the judges here at ITT and DWTS, I think judges at DWTS win hands down. Any comments?
Other than some cringingly bad lines like "take care you crazy bastard" (or something like that), i thought answered by fire was pretty good.
On another topic, Friday's Chaser led me to finally conclude that Chris Taylor is every bit as funny as Chas Licciardello. It would be nice if the ABC could afford to send them both overseas somewhere - or shoot them.
Such a shame that the ABC has to continue in its tradition of carrying the whole troupe, including the less talented hangers-on. Where are the commercial networks with their big money and selective recruiting?
CHUNGLW: "The host and especially the co-host seemed like two fish out of water and the judges, especially Simon, were rather annoying."
I only saw it for the last couple of minutes while waiting for the movie to start (should have known it would run overtime) but I only saw two male judges, James and Ross, very well known. Who's Simon?
I watched a little bit of ITT. Agree with the comments regarding the co-host. With a "trainee" as the main host (who I think will grow into the role) you really need a top notch co-host to support them. I think the person who was the co-host was appalling. No warmth, charm or humour. Surely there must be some good female talent in Australia.
I also saw a bit of BB last night (waiting for L&O). It was so tedious I was only on the show for a couple of minutes but felt like an hour!
i see that sunday football got 1.25 mill yesterday.
was that the 1pm game or the 4pm game.
If it was the 4pm game then what was the afl/nrl split?
Tribal Mind replies: God only knows. I report the ratings figures put out by OzTAM, and they don't make the kind of distinctions you are asking about. They lump together the footy figures for southern states with the footy figures for northern states. You should phone them to get that kind of breakup (and I'd love to hear their response).

The Mole : Celebrity Edition
Now comes,
Australian Survivor: Celebrity Edition.
Answered By Fire was really good. It's something that all Australians should have watched. I think it's disgraceful that they those chose the American stuff, when they had a quality Aus alternative. I'm disappointed that more people didn't watch it but over 1 million is pretty good for the ABC.
Next Sunday against 'Answered By Fire' we have the movie length final episode of Blue Heelers in the same timeslot, Big Brother running overtime to 9pm and Ch 9 switching to movies again. Hmm interesting.
"Answered By Fire" - absolutely fabulous - whoever wrote the story should be given a Logie immediately. The story was wonderful, the actors were wonderful as was the scenery - how timely that it should be shown now, every household should have it on followed by a discussion time between the adults and children - now is the time for Australia to really help the East Timorese and stay until the job is done this time. We, i.e. Australia, owe so much to these people and have been so remiss in not doing the right thing by our neighbours. It's time for John Howard and his parliament to do the job properly.
I am another person who watched Answered by Fire instead of items on the other channels! But then I don't watch these as i am in the wrong age group.Well done ,ABC! May there be more!
I was disappointed with It Takes Two last night. I watched the whole thing, but I was surprised at how bad it seemed. I think Erika Heynatz may now regret having thrown away her job as host of Australia's Next Top Model on Fox8 to be on this show. There is no way she is going to get any kind of record company deal out of this show.
The concept seems fine, but the execution was off. Most of the couples just shuffled from side to side looking at each other. Why would you have an opera singer on there? And the back-up vocals and band were too high - you couldn't really hear the celebrities' voices much at all.
Mind you - they did seem like they were all packing it last night. Which means, they can only improve as they relax more!
I agree Judy Nunn seemed to be there more for the fun of it, so her performance was probably the most watchable. I suspect most of the celebs who have agreed to go on the show either desperately want the exposure (Kate Fischer), actually think they can sing and this is their big break for a singing career or a better TV career (Simon Reeves) or both (Erika Heynatz).
The stage set-up also seemed odd. They should be on a stage with people in front of them, not on a platform in the round.
I'll still watch it next week, but only because my wife has forbidden me from watching Big Brother this year and there's nothing else much on to keep your mind off work the next day...
For those of you who watched BB06 last night... What was with the secret little pash session between brokeback David and Michael? Gretal (surprisingly) did not discuss it during her interview with Michael.... the whole episode seems to be ignored....
Tribal Mind - No doubt you are aware that Aaron Sorkin (of West Wing fame) has a new show coming out in the States on NBC called "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip". It stars Brad Whitford (WW) and Matthew Perry (Friends) and the previews look amazing.
QUESTION: Any idea what network it may appear on over here? And when? Or is this another one to download, like the latter seasons of the WW...
TM replies: I'd guess Nine would have rights, but they'll only show it after 10.30. I would download now, to be safe.
Annabelle , I disagree with your prediction BB ratings will not drop . Already they are plummeting , let's face it , the intruders HAD to go in early this year to try and bolster flagging interest . The show is boring ! Can I make a prediction of my own ? ALL the housemates get put up for eviction , viewers get to vote their favourites back in . This would server a two fold purpose . (a ) Fewer housemates get back in , and hopefully the more interesting ones . ( b) a big money earner for BB , let's face it , their revenue is way down , I for one can't be bothered wasting my money voting for anything.
To all the misfits who switched over from "It Takes Two"to Big Brother should get themselves a life. Those who are addicted to the stupid moronic BB,are an example of human-robots with no IQ and dumber than dumb.
That said,"It Takes Two" wasn't all that bad and it should get better over the next few weeks. Grant Denyer hosting the show may not have been at his best but he is a talent Seven is lucky to have. However, as with all talent shows I deplore the voting system [phone and sms]which have at times caused the wrong contestants to win.
I was disappointed in the performance of Erica Heynatz who has had a lot of vocal training and has studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. This reaffirms my belief that truly great singings are born with the Gift" not made and certainly its not "Genetic".All the vocal teachers, voice scientists, music techniques will deeply enhance a performer but cannot make one a Great Singer.A lot of the greats agree including the late Ray Charles who said "they either have it in them or they don't".
Judging by the performance of the contestants and that includes [the Professionals]their carers, you ain't gonna see any.
And don't forget that CSI was a conclusion to a two parter. So I would have watched ABC, but wanted to know the conclusion more.
And I have news overload after the earthquake, current events in Dili while recovering from beaconsfield. I can only take so much real life.
Farewell Mighty Michael!
FEH to Gretel and BB - take it and shove it!
David!!! You're right that BB's ratings will plummet after losing the mighty Michael. Serves them right. They put him in an impossible position, and then blamed him for it. AS IF!!!
To make it worse, Gretel Killeen, usually a Queen of Serene, became the Queen of Mean with Michael, something I've never seen her do before, despite an endless parade of less than charming BB evictees. Was she trying to make him cry or what. She certainly deprived him of the pleasure of his eviction and his prizes with her nasty needling. It was one of the most unpleasant things I've seen on Australian television in years.
Once BB made Michael get 8 people to vote against him he never had a chance. It's easy for Gretel to say that his insider status kept him safe from nomination/ eviction while he was BB's mole. But that's just avoiding the issue - which is what they made him DO as the insider!
What it did was put him in a position of making all the other housemates distrust him even further, and for too long to allow him to recover from it. What was he supposed to do to get those 8 negative votes??? What would YOU have done???
And BB didn't even make it clear that Michael was initially threatened with immediate eviction if he didn't act as the insider. Mainly they revealed that he would only be nominated. Big big difference. It was unconscionable. They stole the prize from him, and the possibility of forming good relationships there, and he was right to feel miffed and confused when he came out. Gretel behaved like a corporate bidge. She should apologise. So should BB. It was ugly to watch.
So, I won't be watching any more. They can take their mean spirited show and shove it!
Any BB buff could tell very early in the 6.30 'twist' show that it was not worth watching and was best left to the tween audience - its obvious target. The eviction was better, and I doubt ratings will suffer with Michael gone (ROVE will be pleased though, will watch him especially this week only to watch THAT interview). For the record, I do think Michael thinks too highly of himself, but I do think he held his own against Gretel, who was particularly patronising a-la her interviews with Merlin from the previous series. Housemates now cannot vote for Michael, and if they have any sense will stop voting for Camilla (who has an obvious fan base), so nominations will heat up.
Has anybody else noticed the resemblance between Warren Brown (Peking to Paris) and Dick Dastardly from Wacky Races. All they need now is a dog sniggering in the front seat and the show would be absolutely prefect.
A great show, showing countries like Mongolia and Siberia they many of us would never normally see.
But considering 1.56m viewers watch the crap on BB, they are truly missing a great show.
Well done to the makers and ABC for this viewing highlight.
Maybe next time, the producers may get us to vote a car out each week, it may bring in more viewers.
Any figures for Monaco GP last night TM
Tribal Mind replies: If that was something called World Rally Championships, then 217,000; if it was FIA World Championship, then 425,000. Nothing else on the top 50 looks like the kind of vroom you are seeking.
Yes "Answered by Fire" was great. Such a dreadful commentary on Australia that so few (relatively) watched it. ITT, BB, 60 minutes of trash and the footy, that's all Australians care about it seems. No wonder the politicans of every party get away with murder!
The Chaser deserves a better timeslot and a better setup -- it's still good but is being let down by the new format. CNNNN was much better visually, now the set is too crowded with bodies and ill defined.
A big thanks to Big Pond Broadband for their streaming of the Sydney Writer's Festival talks, just brilliant and way better than most of what was on TV at the time!
Winstone said .."To all the misfits who switched over from "It Takes Two"to Big Brother should get themselves a life. Those who are addicted to the stupid moronic BB,are an example of human-robots with no IQ and dumber than dumb."
Oh Winstone how could you say such a thing? I am SURE there is at least ONE BB viewer who is not a robot that is dumber than dumb... I can't wait for Kelli M to get stuck into you. Oooh are YOU in Biiiig trouble now Winstone! Seek him Kelli....
Can someone please explain to me the point of them damn Australian Pensioner Insurance Panel ads with washed up tv personalities on them?
I flicked over a few time to It Takes Two. Yes, its watchable and will probably drop a bit in the ratings but then hold. The dressing room co-host was a bit ditzy. Still, Ch 7 then loses everyone at 8.30pm so the chances of Greys Anatomy fitting in there are getting better all the time.
As for Answered by Fire - absolutely fantastic. A classy, riveting production. Just a shame its only 2 weeks.
I sat down to watch Supernatural on Channel Ten tonight at 8:45, you can always count on our wonderful stations to broadcast at least 5 minutes late, and had to wait another 10 minutes before the show started. I am completely amazed at the lack of respect these channels show in not sticking to a schedule! If I had wanted to watch BB, I would have had it on from the beginning.
Also, I'm confused about a post that was submitted in Aaron Sorkin's new show being up for grabs by Channel 9. From what I see, Channel 7 has most of NBC's & ABC's shows, and Channel 9 has most of CBS' shows, while Channel Ten has the struggling networks shows. What exactly is the deal with these stations. And as far as everyone complaining about the lack of viewership for Australian shows and how everything has been Americanized, I say it's all a result of what the people want. If Australian producers were to produce shows that the majority of people wanted to see then there wouldn't be so many American shows on TV. ABC and SBS produce and schedule shows for a specific kind of viewer, not for the mass audience.
did anyone else see someone that looked suspiciously like Eddie Figjam at the everest base camp when they brought in back from the dead lincon hall, i am sure i saw him in one corner with a beer and a cheque book
naomi asks .."Can someone please explain to me the point of them damn Australian Pensioner Insurance Panel ads with washed up tv personalities on them?"
naomi, they are auditioning for Dancing With the Obscure Stars seriers 63 and Warbling with the Wunce Well Known series 5 (otherwise known as It Takes Two unknown "Stars" to sing a song together.)
Be grateful, the alternative was that if they had been slightly better known, the Labour Party would have grabbed them and offered them a seat in one of Sydneys southern beachside suburbs and you would have seen them every other night on TV looking VERY serious and talking about a special home for retired personalities without a personality who can't even get a job doing adverts for breakfast cereals that give people the sh*ts..
dan, if you look really closely at the Yak that he came down the mountain on, it has a Collingwood scarf wrapped around its neck.
There is good news though, 48 climbers who were heading for the peak grabbed Eddie after he dropped off the injured climber and dragged him up to the death zone - that is where tv companies lose track of time and programs run late or at odd hours of the night and change time slot each week before they die through lack of anyone watching them.
Latest news is FIGJAM was seen sitting on a Rocca waving at the climbers going past. None would stop though as they were convinced his channel is dead.
hay oliviab, no one stole the prize from michael - even without the insider role he would of been evicted at this stage due to his personality. He has huge arrogance, which was shown when him and gretel had it out last night and sunday. I think that if someone like claire had been the insider role she would of done it differently, AND if viewers liked Michael enough they should of voted to save him. Its pretty clear, vote to save or evict!
and for Winstone Robinson, ha ha your comment just made me laugh - its pretty pathetic to judge people on what tv show they may watch. It only makes you look "dumber than dumb" and childish that you value your tastes above others - and believe that everyone that doesn't agree with your views has a lower IQ. And going on from what David H's sarcasism i hope someone does rip into your comment, Kellie M?!
I watched some of Close to Home last night, really really liked it!! Wish is was on at 8:30 though
BD - I, too, caught the end of Big Brother as I sat down to watch Supernatural. What I found really ridiculous was Gretel Killeen's announcement at the end that BB Adults Only was on at 9.40 - they were already running 15 minutes behind when she said it!
'Answered by Fire' was pretty hammy, really. Not terrible, but not particularly good either. 'Mills & Boon' meets 'Boys Own' Adventure. The real drama was revealed when I switched over to BB & caught Gretel & Michael in the midst of a psychological death hold.
annabelle it wasn't sarcasm it was humour and not even sarcastic humour. For EXACTLY the reasons you stated it was obvious Winstone would cop a serve (and deservedly so) for his ludicrously sweeping statement and I named Kelli M as the most likely to serve it up to him as she has previously demonstrated great intelligence, a superb wit and of course a love of BB, so I am sure she will not let us down.
Having said that, I am NOT suggesting you (and the other BB lovers who frequent this blog) don't have intelligence, humour or a love of BB!
Sheesh you have to be SO careful not to stomp on young folks feelings here... oops and old folks, errrr and medium folks too!!!
Yes I watched Closer to home. Don't think I'll be watching it on a regular basis... Very Jerry Bruckheimer-ish. I also watched What's good for you which killed a bit of time for that time slot on a Monday night... As for BB, can't say I watch it or am the least bit interested, but Gretel must be one of the most annoying TV presonalities on this earth. I would have liked to see Michael give it to her. She has no idea what she's saying half the time anyway.
Winstone Robinson, anyone that watched "It takes Two" doesn't have the IQ or class to comment on any other show on television, EVEN Big Brother. It's a sad indictment on Australian society that "Dancing with the Stars" and "It Takes Two" can even make it to the screen.
BD, The output details for US made shows does not align with the network on which it airs in the US, It depends on the production Company behind the show also, Larger production companies such as Fox and Warner Brothers make a large portion of the US Shows however many of the air on other networks than FOX and The CW
Did anyone catch the Michael V Gretle argument last night?
I'm not a big brother watcher, but my girlfriend is, and she called me into the living room last night to watch Michael the latest evictee give Gretle a serve that she has needed for a long time.
It was quite funny, Gretle as usual made her self out to be a stuck up bitch that didn't realise she was making the exact same claims Michael was making about the editing of the show.
She was totally unprofessional, and he came out on top of the argument, even after she let us all know that she's been on the show for 6 years and you can't tell her what goes on. Finally her rant about cameras being everywhere was quiet strange, seeing as she never backed it up with actual footage proving him wrong.
As always when she's losing an argument she cuts off the other person with the old 'anyway moving on'
Its time to go.... Gretle.
Tribal Mind asks: But did Michael kiss David or did he not?
What's Good For You wasn't a clone of You Are What You Eat it was more of a cross between Better Homes and Gardens and Mythbusters but dealing with health and instead of busting myths they were just showing the bleeding obvious like running on grass has less imapct on your feet than running on concrete. I felt more stupid after the show than before it.
BB06 - the footage they showed on Sunday night re the David and Michael "kiss" was not the same footage they showed last night. Last night's footage was quite ambiguous. Sunday night's footage clearly depicted two people kissing.
Can someone please inform Gretal's wardrobe department of her exact age.
Hi to all the "Big Brother" fans and to all the Kellie Ms out there in Noddy-Land...I loves ya all.Theirs a segment in todays SMH by journalist Peter Luck commentating about the ABC.On BB he writes,"where we find a group of "MORONS"in their living rooms sitting around watching a group of "MORONS"in their living room".What a naughty naughty boy you are Mr Peter.Shame on you!
I thought last night was quite entertaining TV. The BB Gretel vs Michael stoush was silly but kept us watching (No, Michael didn't kiss the other guy)
Close To Home was quite good - the young boy was a fine actor in a difficult role.
Best show on TV last night?
Boston Legal.
David H, sorry! all of your posts seem to me that they have a sarcastic humour to them, ie your footy comment the other day! Next time i wont automatically assume!
I actually thought Gretel went a tad overboard last night, but obviously she was just trying to save the credibility(i say that very losely) of the show that BB doesn't "edit" things in the house. I just think she wanted to start something again with Michael cos he bites so easily! He speaks to people like they are children! "Can you let me speak - fine i won't talk then..." Its pathetic and i can't wait for Rove to get his tiny claws into him!
TGYH on Wed should be great! Hamish will make up for the fact they brought back Fifi again! What are they thinking! Hopefully they will give her a scenario that she can sort of work with and not just stand there and giggle her way through it!
message to sob: disagree with your comment that the footage they showed last nite of David and Michael was different to the "kiss" on sunday nite.
I taped sunday's episode cause i was at the movies and re-watched the supposed kiss. yes, it's from a different camera angle but it is in slow-mo and it looks like they are about to kiss - but they dont.
Not that im questioning michael's sexuality - after seeing the real Reuben one must assume they are a real life couple!!
big bro will certainly be boring now
I think televison executives for all Australian free-to-air networks must be freaking out this year. The ratings, in general have certainly been a lot lower than in previous years. If the top show of the night was only 1.59m for the news then there's something seriously wrong. The top rating show for the week looks like being 'It Takes Two' with 1.75m.
Compare this to the top rating shows in May, in the past few years. 2005: Desperate Housewives 2.1m, 2004: CSI 1.9m to 2.1m, 2003: Room for Improvement 2m, 2002: Backyard Blitz 2m, 2001: Blitz 2.3m, Friends 2.1m, ER 2.1m, 2000: Friends 3.3m, Blue Heelers 3.2m (this 2000 figure must include all Aust not just the top 5 cities)
What's going on? They can't all have switched to Foxtel. Subscriptions don't reflect it.
Closer to home is so typical I can't see why anyone would continue watching it. It had every cliche possible: Working mum with a child she rarely seems to bother seeing (a la CSI, Judging Amy), not always so supportive husband (a la medium), dreary emotional personality devoid lead actress (a la cold case, medium), overly unjust legal system that needs to be, and always is overcome (a la any legal show you can think of) right down to the African-American judge. Surely it won't be too many episodes before someone is shot and "this time - it's one of their own". Jerry Bruckheimer is a genius. No one ever went broke appealing to the lowest common denominator.
Tont - I agree entirely with your Reuben comment.
With an aging population, Is channel 10 ever going to rid it's mix of raw sewrage television with programmes such as Big Brother and Friday night games ? Ive just hooked up Foxtel, as I cant stand Free-to-air television anymore.
Geoff
J Bar - so it's not just me - you've noticed the pathetically poor viewing audiences as well. I reckon viewers have simply had enough of shows starting late, running overtime, switching timeslots, new episodes being postponed for "special event TV" or interrupted with repeats & "catch-up" filler "episodes" ... the list goes on and on. Viewers want to be able to CHOOSE the programs they the box, and mucking around with programs like this prevents them from doing this. My wife and I have given up on Sunday night TV ("Answered By Fire" and SBS docos excepted) and simply watch our favourite DVD's. At least that way we know what show will be on, when it will start and (most importantly) when it will finish. Often, you cannot rely upon a published TV guide to get ANY of this information.
Did anyone see the end of Today Tonight last night - they ran a viewers poll as to who we thought was the most annoying celebrity on Australian Television.
The results were not very surprising.
No 5 was Rove,
No 4 was Kochie,
No 3 was Daryl Somers,
No 2 was Gretel Killeen,
and the award for the most annoying celebrity on Australian Television ----
Jessica Rowe!
Apparently because the poll was taken on Channel 7 via Today Tonight, Naomi Robson admitted that she was ranked as the 11th most annoying celebrity between Sam Newman and Kyle Sandilands.
Not sure how many people voted but interesting result!
Oh God. Rove is a useless interviewer. He won't inflict half the damage on Michael that Gretel did. I know this is an unpopular point of view, but I really like Gretel as a BB host. Considering how vapid most of the housemates are, and how idiotic Mike Goldman/Friday Night Games/Hotdog's Quiz Show for Imbeciles are, I think Gretel is the one thing that saves BB from descending into a pit of mindlessness. (I still love it, though.)
Ah Channel 9. I'm so glad you're finally being ratted on about your sensationalist interviewing schemes ...
http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,19304993-2,00.html
Annabelle or is it Tinklebelle and is Peter Pan your sister?I bet you all watch BB together with all the Kellie Ms, old gizzard Harry H and with all the other fairy's.I'm surprised you can all string a word or two together and can actually spell.Gee whiz,I think there might be a bit of IQ somewhere among you lot.Never the less,I think I will watch BB[for the first time]right to the end.I heard that in some Prisons the authority's force their inmates to watch BB as a form of torture and punishment.Actual facts are,BB is a form of a "PEEPING TOM PERVERTION"."I can see in your living and bedrooms but you can't see in mine".Great for Jail inmates!Ah...well,the things I have to do to understand the BB syndrome.
to oliviab (may29 4.17pm)
are u related to micheal? if not then geez get a grip! i have no prob with people standing up for someone but i dont think its necessary to get soooo hyped up,
its just a show?? i dont want to offend its just that you seem to have alot of passion for some random person who most everyone will forget about in a couple of months. you must be related to him. are you? god i hope you are..
It was fantastic to watch BB's Gretel vs Michael match. I am not a great BB fan but I think Mike was the biigest attraction of the show. He sure taught some good lessons to the BB supposedly entertaining team. He was also unfairly 'treated' after being an insider and should have received special prize or 'immunity' for the role.
Who is going to watch cuddles between boring people Jaimie/Katie, etc...
Housemate... Its time to go... and switch channel.
I agree totally with Annabelle at May 30, 2006 11:21 AM. If the idea is to have one of the segments on TGYH find humour in the ineptitude of the guest and generate laughs by them standing there like a stunned mullet with no witt and no clue, why not just invite an audience member to participate and do away with that moron Fifi Box. Could be a cheaper alternative.
How has Nerds FC rated so far?
Tribal Mind replies: 276,000 in the mainland capitals.
SHAME CHANNEL.9, SHAME!
* Did anyone else see the Brigadier interview on the Today show? If Ch.9 does this to a major incident like the unrest in East Timor, imagine what it does in other news stories.
*Here are some news reports that you might see on Ch.9 in the future,
- Amazingly, another six miners found trapped in Beaconsfield, 10 feet form where they found Brant and Todd.
- Latest video of Osama Bin Laden, shows him shoplifting from a Coles Supermarket in Fairfield.
- Amateur photos of alien life form taken in Artarmon, however UFO sceptics say it is just Bert Newton. You be the judge.
- Approximately 47 million Australians march along George Street to protest the War in Iraq.
- South Sydney Rabbitohs are hot favourites to be NRL 2006 Premiers.
* Channel 9, still the one - for stage-managed news.
Winstone Robinson, hmm how witty of you. Tinkerbell...Peter pan... you are quite hilarious. Was it because i could spell, or you believe my IQ rating is good enough for you, that you had to resort to paying out my name?
TM can we please keep these comments a bit more TV related!!!
Macavity i agree with you, i like Gretel as a host!
OliviaB
Get over it get on with life, if thisis the only thing you have to moan about then you need to get out of the house more. Remember life imitates art and TV is an art that's why it is a reality show, and people like Micheal do exist in real life, and it looks like you are one of his clones.
Winstone, you evidently havent noticed that none of the BB fans are bothering to rise to your bait, and your over the top attempt to raise the level of unprovoked insults against anyone who enjoys the show is proving only one thing and that is that the BB audience is considerably more intelligent and mature than you.
Apart from your having a shot at Kelli M who has not said one word in this current blog about BB, you evidently believe that by quoting someone elses simple minded abusive statements (Peter Luck) that you are somehow vindicated.
On behalf of NON BB fans that have a hell of a lot more tolerance than you, everyone is entitled to their opinions and their viewing habits and I can ASSURE you, a lot of intelligent and very pleasant regular contributors to this blog happen to watch and enjoy BB.
I do not, but that does not make them wrong, or stupid or dumb, nor does it make you or I right or smart. Your silly ranting however marks you as an intolerant ignoramus who I am sure will be delighted that SOMEONE reacted to your abusive posts even if that person was not even a BB fan.
I hope you enjoy the show when you watch it, but doubt you could possibly be open minded enough to give it a chance.
Quick Question: What did Charmed season 7 used to score and were they good ratings?
Tribal Mind replies: up to season 4, Charmed used to get about a million viewers, but this dropped to 700,000 in later seasons. Apparently it jumped the shark when Shannen Doherty left. To see a recent episode, go here: http://tv.peekvid.com
I also hear that the last two episodes of Blue Heelers will be shown on Seven this night. Imagine the number of audience it would have got had it been scheduled for Sunday nights from the start of the ratings season, instead of Saturday nights against The Bill?
Tony: I totally agree about the comments regarding Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. It looks great. I'll be getting it via BitTorrent as soon as it airs in the US.
I'm not a BB fan but I would've liked to have seen the eviction show Sunday. Sounds like it was interesting.
TM, Thanks for the book! Looks good.
How bad was "The Wedge"? That was the worst Australian show in a long time. To make up for really weak jokes an extremely forced laugh track that just annoyed me. I prefer not to be told where to laugh.
But my question is how did it rate?
Tribal Mind replies: Tell you at 10 am tomorrow
Just saw the Wedge. A couple of medium chuckles, but yeah, the laugh track really gives me the sh3ts. Take note of the top new american sitcoms this year like Everybody hates Chris and My name is Earl. Get with the program Channel Ten.
Another repeat of house this week? why? Its won ratings over prison break before.....
The Australian audience should really see the season finale...the series is too good to be dragged on like this....
David D? Any news from the smh big wigs yet re $$$ or are you still doing this just for the warm fuzzies & knowledge that we love you :)
Both Channel 10 and 7 must have greeted the Today show gaffe with astonishment, Ch 10 astonished that they fought SO hard to keep Jessica and Ch 7 astonished at this PR gift from Ch 9, following so soon after their court case messy PR matter.
O.k To be fair to Jess (and yes that hurts) maybe Jess was reading off a script, perhaps not prepared by her, but then seriously luck & credibility are just not on this gal's side.
Also, even if the guards weren't stage-managed, wouldn't there just have been more pertinent serious journalistic questions to ask? If he wasn't safe, would he really have been standing still in front of a camera & endangering himself & the crew? Actually, he said just that, didn't he.
Oh, I am in complete agreement with Pete, best show is Boston Legal (love it and never miss it)
Hated Ally McBeal (by David E Kelley) but he's got casting gems for BL !
The Wedge was average. There were a few laughs here and there but there were lots of moments where you felt like groaning. The bogan mothers on the pokies were the only bit that made me laugh. I totally agree about the ridiculous laugh track. Not necessary and sounds ridiculous when the audience supposedly laughs at stuff that isn't very funny. A lot of the jokes had been spoilt by featuring them in the ads, so I wonder if it will better next week with jokes that have not been spoilt.
I actually saw the Jessica Rowe Today interview yesterday because my lift to work was running late. It made Jess look unprofessional and just reinforced my opinions of breakfast tv and why I prefer the radio. It seems like the breakfast hosts can't do serious news interviews any more. Do you think that all the banter and humour that has been forced into the breakfast shows has been detrimental to serious interviews?
The Wedge: Biggest load of crap. I give it 3 weeks. We will never have another D Generation / Late Show I fear.
What the show lacks is the comedians. If you think of The Late Show, or even Skit House which was also good, it was the comedians that delivered the skits that made it. Not so much the skits themselves. Comedy Inc. and the Wedge seem to use unemployed actors to deliver the funny lines. Just doesn't work like that.
To: David H at May 30, 2006 06:49 PM
Why not say what you really mean !
Can we keep some of the personal attacks down. The yelling matches between some of you are getting a bit ho hum
Hi TM, I find it very interesting that the 7pm timeslot often has a different winner each night of the week, do all prgrams rate almost equal or does particular prgrams seem to win particular days ie does BB always win mondays? Just Curious as H & A made the top ten last night yet the other day was beaten by BB and Temptation. Perhaps it is just a timeslot without regular viewers.
Tribal Mind replies: It's different every night, and if I get time, I will try to find a pattern in it and write a future Tuesday column on the subject. Each show seems to have a core audience of 1.1 milion, with 300,000 floaters.
Although TGYH is filmed before a studio audience, I think there may be canned laughter used to "normalise" the audience laughter. Anyone else agree?
TM: I find it unlikely that 'Border Security' makes many Australians paranoid. It's just a show that lets us see what drug traffic / bad food we stop isnt it? I dont think it's soley based on capturing terrorists. I hardly watch tv its such a waste of time.
In reference to "there will never be another D Gen" in a previous post. No, there won't be...but there is something as clever and just as funny - its "The Chaser" on ABC Fri nights. I'm a comic and it makes me laugh - that's normally a good sign!
I like Border Security, especially the outraged idiot people exclaiming "I'm a white Australian! How dare you treat me like a terrorist?", as if random airport security checks didn't exist before 9/11.
Glad I forgot to watch the Wedge though. Sounds pretty dire and cringeworthy.
I think our fascination with Border Patrol has something to do with how we all really hate Customs. (Can you you sense a rant around the corner? I'll save my beef with Customs for another day.)
But its always interesting to see how far people can push Customs. I noticed a trend where it appears safe to go off at the system. Eg. you're jobs a joke/ waste of time/ or this is stupid/ bullsh!t etc.
However if the insults are personal, eg. you are a f*wit/ brain-dead/ snivelling grub etc, the traveller is guaranteed a cavity search before leaving the Airport.
Good to see BB06 and Temptation out of the top 10, but probably not for long.
The Wedge was pretty sad. I expected good things especially as it was a McFadden creation and the Sandra Sultry promo was kind of cute.
Unfortunately, the most generous thing I can say about it was that I got one, maybe two chuckles, at most. The rest of the time it was flat and cringeworthy. As another poster commented, a great part of what makes a good comedy is the people delivering the lines themselves. I reckon if the cast of say The Comedy Company had a go at the same material, it would be a hell of a lot more funny and entertaining.
In the end... well I don't know what happened in the end - I repaired to the computer room for some online entertainment...
Msg for Jasmine...I don't think House is a repeat tonight. I'm completely devoted and it's not an episode I've ever seen before. Pretty sure it's a new one this week (which makes for a nice change!)
the television thrown at us by the commercial stations is mostly rubbish. Wake up Australia and start using your brains again. What is happening when in a world we are obsessed with has beens singing and disgusting selfish mindless creatures locked together in a house. Or maybe programs that incite fat unemployable breeders to fight with their neighbours, WAKE UP FOR GOD SAKE. not to mention the disgusting morning programs we are forced to intake.
I think even SMH believes that all LOST viewers now download episodes from the net.
Note - MAJOR spoiler by SMH in the last line of the following link :)
http://www.smh.com.au/news/people/overcrowding-frees-lost-actress/2006/05/31/1148956391530.html
In all honesty, i think this site has been hijacked by Foxtel stooges.. There is a constant attack on the FTA networks.... I mean, is FTA TV really that bad? I live without fox... I do get to watch foxtel relatively regularly at my folks place... but seriously, all it is good for is sport programs and cooking shows. Of course you could tune in to the completely "unbiased / no-spin" Fox News... I think id prefer to try my luck with the CH 9 stage managers...
Damien (May 31): To say "..I expected good things especially as it was a McFadden creation" is a contradiction in terms.
Forced to intake, Tim? It's sad you have people putting a gun to your head and forcing you to endure Sunrise, but i have a simple solution for you:
Turn off the TV!
Your tv guide is total fiction.
any link to actual programing.
is pure luck at best.
get your act straight.
i will not be buying your paper again. fools.
Tribal Mind replies: Can you give details? There are times when the networks change their schedules after the guide has gone to press. I'm sure the Guide would wish to improve, if you tell them what was wrong.
David H, May 30 - PUH-LEASE! "..insults against anyone who enjoys the show" (Big Brother) are NOT "unprovoked" - clearly the insults are in response to the shock of realising that a large portion of the population is not only considerably LESS intelligent than assumed, but that narrow-minded, self-obsessed pinheads rule. Like you, really. And the fact that you're trying to come across as such a defender of other people's choices just makes you a wimp as well.
Were the ratings for Six Feet Under so bad that Nine needed to push it back to midnight from the already late start of 10:45pm.
After Mondays episode (one of the better ones for the year) I'm guessing that there are only a few shows remaining before it really is buried forever.
I have enjoyed watching this cast of complex characters. As a gay man, I liked watching 'Michael' evolve as he struggled to find his place, as a newly-out gay man, not only within his family but also in his relationships. TV has come along way since Billy Crystal's effusive character of Jodie Dallas in Soap in the 70's.
Tribal Mind replies: Yes they were.
tim at May 31, 2006 12:29 PM
"not to mention the disgusting morning programs we are forced to intake"
Tim nobody is holding a gun to your head to watch these programs.
If you don't like the inane morning programs then don't watch them.
I avoided The Wedge last night: it looked to me like another rehash of The Comedy Company - how many of the 1.5 million nationally will tune in next week?
Big Brother: with the loss of Michael, undoubtably the only genuine star of this year's series, the show is over, at least for me. As usual, another boring wallflower will win.
Gretel Kileen has lost any respect I had for her: that performance on Monday night was pitiful, to say the least. Give the gig to Mike Goldman next year, Channel 10.
As for Mikey the ex housemate: I bet he's got a future career on TV or radio.
Finally: Jessica Rowe! What more can I say? I bet Nine is sorry they spent all that money to lure her over to the Today Show.
I think the funniest thing on Australian tv at the moment is ABCs Chaser's war on Everything. I had a good ol chuckle watching the stocking sketch.
It's comedy for intelligent people and gives the commercial channels a bloody good kick up the arse. Give it a go! Just wish it was on a better night because hardly anyone watches tv on a Friday night
the wedge should be axed straight away. what's wrong with these "funny" people? it's another aussie sketch show that's not funny at all. i watched TVS instead with two people on wheelchairs hosting the show.
I think the reason for lower viewer numbers nowadays is due to the fact that there are so many more alternatives than free to air tv now. There's Bittorrent, pay tv, broadband internet, PS2, Xbox, and satellite tv. A lot of these are now more accessible and reliable than they ever used to be and honestly, how long do fta networks think people will put up with the way they treat viewers.
Is it just me or does 99.99% of comedy on Rove Live completely miss the mark?
who's with me on this one? who listens to tripleM? what about that chick robyn butler's annoying put-on laughter. mick molloy does not help either.
Tribal Mind replies: This blog is supposed to be about television. Probably Fairfax should also offer a radio blog, but they don't, and this is not going to be it. Since Fairfax doesn't even want readers to discuss TV, there is no point starting an irrelevant discussion about radio here.
Watched "Rove Live"last night and still believe it needs a overhaul. Co-host Peter Helliar is a pain in the neck, untalented, unsophisticated and why the producers hired the fellow is beyond belief.Compare the {years old}"Don Lane Show"to Rove and there is a big difference.Don had a lot of great bands and singers on the one night while Rove left his only one hotshots to the end.I feel sorry for Jessica Rowe who has toned down the giggling.Rumors are, fast Eddie McGuire is looking to replace her.I just hope they keep her on as I believe with time she will get better.I think that Nine needs to look at excutive producer Mark Llewellyn who has blasted ex-host of "Today" Steve Liebmann for crticizing the show.I watched BB lastnight but failed the test to watch it to the end as I felt like a peeping t...ain't gonna say on more on this spiral disaster.
"What Australia watched, Tuesday.
3 Today Tonight (7) 1.65m"
How sad..
Why has Seven got the rights to do Celebrity Survivor instead of Nine?
Tribal Mind replies: Because Nine only bought the rights to one show from the makers of Survivor, and not the rights to all other permutations of the name. In fact it's just a pinch from the British show "I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out of here", which is often filmed in Queensland.
The Wedge was funny, Rove was funny...do u guys have a sense of humour?
If Comedy Inc did so badly last night - what show won the timeslot and what did the Desperate Housewives special rate please TM?
The similarities between 'It Takes Two' and 'Dancing With The Stars' are obvious. I think it has a good chance of getting even higher ratings as it goes on. There's a good chance it will knock 'Big Brother' about and Ch 9 must really be regretting the way they stuffed around with the timeslots for 'Backyard Blitz' this year because it's obviously been affected. Where will Ch 9 put 'Dancing on Ice' now? It would suffer against 'It Takes Two' and in a later timeslot it might be a case of reality TV overload on a Sunday night. Ch 10 might have to rethink the timeslot/night for 'Australian Idol' too.
Meanwhile, I thought 'The Chaser's War on Everything' did a great job escalating the battle between Ch 9 and Ch 7 over their news. Will the ABC please give them a better timeslot for this brilliant satire. Nobody watches it late on Friday night.
"While the others are ambulance chasers, at 9 we are professional news breakers. First with the round of beers, first with the chequebook, first with an extra bag of cash to seal the deal."
"More Australians get their cheques from 9 than from any other source. Channel 9. Still the one, for journalistic prostitution."
