Footy, sentimentality, and two new shows with strong appeal to people over 40 gave Channel Nine a victory last night. It drew 35.3 per cent of the prime time audience, with Seven on 29.9, Ten on 21.1, ABC on 10.3 and SBS on 5.3.

Peter Costello's budget speech on the ABC at 7.30 attracted 798,000 viewers in the mainland capitals on Tuesday night -- a strangely small audience for such an important national event. Apparently a few Australians were distracted by some sort of dancing show on Channel Seven, which pulled in 2.66 million viewers. There were also newsbreaks about some sort of mining story.
Australians had tuned in from early in the morning, when the release of two miners finally gave an audience to Nine's 'Today' -- 529,000, the best figure it has ever had. But against it, Seven's 'Sunrise' got 839,000, the best figure IT'S ever had.
Seven got 44.9 per cent of the prime time audience, while Nine got 21.6, Ten 18.2, the ABC 11.2, and SBS 3.7. To put it another way, between 6pm and 10.30 pm on Tuesday night, a total of 5,026,600 people in the mainland capitals were watching free to air TV, divided up thus: 7 2.269m, 9 1.095m, 10 880,000, ABC 587,000 and SBS 194,000.
On the equivalent Tuesday last year, a total of 4,613,400 were watching, divided up thus: 7 1.235m, 9 1.393m; 10 1.050m; ABC 736,000 and SBS 199,000.
So if you want to pull a crowd, don't even think of using Peter Costello. Try Todd Russell or Grant Denyer.

Monday was a huge viewing night, in which 18 shows drew more than a million viewers. The pale cop beat the tarty wives again, but it was the latest on the miners that the viewers really craved, and they were more inclined to trust Nine to give it to them than Seven. Nine's news and 'A Current Affair' had a rare victory over Seven's news and 'Today Tonight' in every city but Perth. Ten's early news at 5pm got 1.1 million, as did the ABC's 7pm news (both up 200,000 on their usual performance).
Nine won the night with a prime time audience share of 29.9 per cent, followed by Seven on 26.8, Ten on 21.6, ABC on 17.3 and SBS on 4.5.

The expectation of the release of trapped miners, and the discovery that a journalistic icon had died on the job brought a record audience to Channel Nine's news on Sunday night -- 2.48 million viewers in the mainland capitals. Most of them stayed around for 60 Minutes, the cleavage and cosmetics parade, and four hours of nostalgia and award presentations.
Nine won the night with an amazing 45.6 per cent of the prime time audience, followed by Seven with 21.6, Ten with 19.3, the ABC with 10.2 and SBS with 3.3. And even with the Logies, the Big Brother Eviction still managed to attract 1.3 million for the chance to see the removal of Tilly and Elise.

Updated 10 am Sunday May 7.
This week, Channel Nine begins its fightback. Beaten by Seven or Ten in seven of the ten ratings weeks so far this year, and squeaking to victory last week mainly because of its Friday night football, Nine has finally decided to return fire.
On Thursday it launches two new shows to compete with Seven's fading hit 'Lost' and Ten's rising hit 'Medium' -- 'Hello Goodbye', a tearjerker reality series about Sydney airport, and the police documentary 'Missing Persons Unit'.
Nine has been surprised and delighted by the resurgence of its crime show 'Cold Case', which was thrown in as a replacement for 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' and managed to beat Seven's blockbuster 'Desperate Housewives' last Monday. Cold Case attracted 1.71 million viewers in the mainland capitals, to the Housewives' 1.62 million.
Seven won Tuesday night, thanks to 2.3 million viewers for 'Dancing With The Stars'. Ten won Wednesday night, thanks to 1.8 million viewers for 'Thank God You're Here', the most successful new Australian program of 2006, and to Big Brother audiences which are better than last year.
As of Friday morning, Seven was ahead for the week, but after the AFL and NRL matches on Friday night totalled 1.8 million viewers, Nine won the week with a prime time audience share of 29.4 per cent, followed by Seven on 28.1, Ten on 23.8, The ABC on 14.0 and SBS on 4.7.

The Bill on Tuesday got 820,000 across the mainland capitals and 263,000 in Melbourne, and on Saturday 858,000 and 245,000. Seven news beat Nine news in every city except Brisbane.

Would you be able to tell me how many viewers Rebus got last night please.
Drewy
Tribal Mind replies: Rebus got 833,000 in the mainland capitals.
i think you left out csi miami
keep up the good work, love the blog!!
Tribal Mind replies: When the audiences were calculated using actual broadcast times, CSI Miami didn't get into the top 20. Remember how programs kept being interrupted on Sunday by Beconsfield reports?
sorry david, this is going to sound really picky, but i noticed a slight problem. house got 1.54m which means it got 1.5m all up. however you gave it a boost on the previous blog saying it got 1.6m. sorry just had to get that off my chest.
Tribal Mind replies: OzTAM's final figures for the week are often different from the daily figures, because programs do not always fit into the times on the program guides. The audience stats quoted by this column during the week are only rough estimates, subject to correction on Sunday.
TM can you tell me how many viewers the O.C got?
Tribal Mind replies: 777,000 in the mainland capitals.
What people watch simply astounds me, lol @ Dancing with the stars.
News is ofcourse fair enough, shows like CSI, Lost, House etc are high quality.
But for shows like McLeod's Daughters and Big Brother to be there is as bad a taste as sewerage water.
To further "level-up" the deplorable choice of the Australian public high quality shows like O.C are towered by the cheap & talentless cast of Home & Away, which still continues to perplex my understanding of human knowledge.
not all the beeping on Big Brother is swearwords-
if they mention the names of people on the outside world in stories about those people, or talk about things like tv shows on rival channels, stuff like that gets beeped out- the former to protect 10 from airing potentially false stories about people who haven't given permission to be talked about, the latter i guess to avoid promoting rivals.
also, things that aren't swear words but which might be paritcularly obscene, or talking about drugs, and things like that also often get beeped out.
Is Channel 9 planning to bring back The Block?
Tribal Mind replies: Unlikely. Why?
If Eddie McGuire really wants to improve viewer numbers at Channel 9 he could start by having programs start and finish on time.
Congrats to John Wood - a deserving winner of the Gold Logie for his ability to keep Blue Heelers interesting and watchable for so many people for so many years (not my cuppa tea but good local production nonetheless), however a look at the list of other nominees for the Gold Logie, included some that aren't even on TV at the moment, alongside others with sliding ratings and yet others who have changed networks and have an audience which normally would have resulted in the termination of their program.
Perhaps this is a clue to why 9 is suddenly on the incline again against its rival networks. It appears that rather than 9 launching a counter attack of quality entertainment, the others have merely slumped to a level below the stuff 9 is running.
Lost jumped the shark, Housewives changed format subtely to become another slightly quirky yet still standard soapie (a bit like Gilmore Girls). The TV viewing public are desperate for ANYTHING new that may entertain and whatever is launched will gain a temporary audience and if it is good (House for example) it will hold that audience. I hope 9 doesn't rest on its small laurels and I equally hope at least ONE network actually decides to go for quality as a policy not an exception - but doubt that 7 or 10 can, having spent so much on grabbing the football from 9 and in the case of 10 again deciding to run the tacky Big Brother as its flag ship behind the Simpsons. With that sort of thinking, they will never be a force in TV.
So ten and seven ate nine Down Under. Here in Canada I did have a bootleg boosted up free to air satelite signal descrambler with dish that showed 378 regular chanels, and about 98 specialty chanels. I was getting fed up. So I gave it away.
Tribal,
I am interested in the ratings of 3 motorsport shows on Channel 10
1. Grand Prix
2. V8 Supercar telecasts
3. RPM on Sunday Afternoon.
Tribal Mind replies: RPM got 241,000 viewers in the mainland capitals yesterday. FIA Formula One World Championship got 243,000. I can't see any reference to Grand Prix or V8 Supercar in yesterday's top 50.
After watching sunrise on sunday, I got the impression that, at day 12, that 'our friends' at sunrise were struggling to come up with new angles to vicariously present the trauma of the miners.
Perhaps they should shove mel and kochie into a 1.5 by 1.5 m cage in a basement with the lights turned off.
I could hear the banter now:
Mel 'Its really dark in here kochie'
Kochie 'yeh mel, how am i going to read my joke of the day!'
Unfortunately and sad to admit that I watched the Logies last night. Channel 9 did the most woeful job. Right from the beginning with the red carpet arrivals to the end. Jessica Rowe has to be the most annoying person on TV at the mo. Didn't like the format of having mutiple hosts. It was just sooo boring. I feel sorry for the international guests to sit through such mindless "entertainment"... It was good to see John Woods win the gold. I would have hated to see Bec win it. Did you see the Hewitts (baby included) present an award? How stupid was that!!!! and Bec won the viewers best dressed. PULEASE that was a very ugly ensemble. OK enough from me, have a good day all.
Oh yeah and John Wood didn't really win a gold logie as much as he did a sympathetic one.
Why would a chief from an axed show win one?
Didn't make sense to me either.
The show that no one seems to talk about is Love My way. the best Aussie Drama around..Thanks Fox for showing this outstanding show
Claudia Karvan, Dan Wyllie, Simon Cowell, Asher Keddie..take a bow
This isn't the tall poppy syndrome or anything, but how predictable was it that John Wood won the gold Logie finally after 10 years. Surprise, surprise. Was he suddenly a better actor this year or did people feel sorry for him because he was nominated so many times and never won.
I've been trawling through the blogs this morning wondering why someone hasn't commented on the amazing demise yesterday of one Richard 'Jackboot' Carleton?
In reading some of last night's online media reports, one journalist actually used the word 'loved' in relation to Carleton's legacy. I read it three times to make sure it wasn't the wine.
It wasn't.
David,
Who is taking care of the blog while your at the future summit on Wed and thurs? We all need our regular ratings race fix!
Tribal Mind replies: Nobody, unless I find an internet cafe somewhere near the summit site and do it from there. But since Fairfax still won't say if it is prepared to pay for this work, there's not much incentive.
Does anyone know who was the guy jumping about last night on the logies. He was in the background and I think he was trying to be in almost every shot.
Why isn't Six Feet Under on Channel 9 tonight? Are they doing a West Wing to it? I'm ready to spill blood...
Is there a Monday update yet?
Tribal Mind replies: Working on it.
Six Feet Under is still the best thing on television, and what time does Nine air it? It did the same thing to The Sopranos. It seems for Nine to achieve high ratings it feeds the crap to the masses during prime time (as Ten does with Big Brother and that talent quest programme) and keeps the quality stuff for the rest of us just before the graveyard shift.
Trust me, The Block will be back. Why? Desperation I guess.
Tribal Mind asks: How do you know?
What was with Joan Rivers on the Logies last night?!?! Was she channelling Michael Cole...
re: Stella Yes I noticed that guy as well. Who was he??? On the logies last night, I must say it was pretty boring. How was the Hewitts presenting an award? That was pretty lame. Yeah and what was Joan Rivers on?
I did vote for John Wood for the gold last Friday afternoon and I'm glad I did, not because Blue Heelers was axed or some sort of sympathy vote but because he is a damm good actor. If Rove won again I was going to get up and throw a brick through the screen. See you soon again on the TV.
in answer to stella - the guy in the background was from 'the chaser's war on everything' - expect to see their logie report on friday night.
"Does anyone know who was the guy jumping about last night on the logies. He was in the background and I think he was trying to be in almost every shot."
It was Chaz from The Chaser
I didn't watch the Logies but caught it on smh this morning that Nine won less Logies than Foxtel!!!!
That's hilarious. Still the one? Not likely.
Tribal Mind replies: But NIne got its best audience all year last night, so it can still make the claim.
I've always liked John Wood as an actor. I was an avid watcher of Rafferty's Rules in the 80s and I watched Blue Heelers religiously until Lisa McCune left.
But did he really think he got the Gold Logie because of his great acting talents and popularity amongst the viewers? I think not. It's all about the cardboard cutout "newcomers" these days and not about people with any acting talent. I'm happy he finally won, but I think it would have had more meaning had he won whilst he and his show were actually at the top of their popularity.
I wonder if John's mum got writer's cramp filling out all those nomination forms......
What a disgrace, I only caught that irritating moron interviewing idiots like Rove, who couldn't find a thing to say thta was even remotely funny. And then when they went to the best dressed candidates, with boring nobody day time TV booze hags dressed up to show they just don't age the way we mere mortals do. Pulease! what a crap effort.
Bit torrent, you are my new friend, no more boring aussie wannabee personalities who suk, interrupting quality shows, nor network PDs who think nothing of changing the date and times, with a BS "now at the special TIME", there's nothing special about lying to people, just ask our PM.
Logies what a joke
Bec Cartwright been voted for a logie, what a joke when has rich trailer trash thats not on tv anymore be liable for a logie, I thought it was about television stars and shows that are actually on tv throughout the year. If it's not let me know I might nominate my boss I could do with the pay rise lol.
The guy jumping around behind everyone at the Logies was from the Chaser I think. I thought it was pretty annoying and pointless, but they did a good skit earlier in the night so i can almost forgive them.
Yet again i thought Adam Hills was the best host of the night- he should do the whole thing next year.
And congrats to John Wood!
How many viewers watched Survivor last week?
Tribal Mind replies: 937,000 in the mainland capitals.
Joan Rivers saved the night, she said what we were all thinking. Especially the Tom Cruise bit. All hail Xenu!
The funniest part of the logies was the guy from "Chaser" everywhere in the coverage.... It was so funny watching if you happened to notice him...He even went up to recieve an award for some kids show... that was hilarious...Then he was there next to john wood and rove when the camera panned to their faces when the gold logie nominations were read out... Did anyone else notice him?
I actually thought the Logies, with a couple of exceptons*, was quite entertaining. And that's what it is supposed to be - not too cerebally challenging. Sure, the usual knockers will come out from under their rocks and engage in their usual banal criticism - but who cares?
Bert was great, Somers was good and even Ray Martin was good.I enjoyed Bert's 'singalong' with Kennedy, and Sherbet were awesome, and even Pink was tolerable.
*Joan Rivers was pathetic and should never have been brought out here - same with the other Yank nobodies; and why are 'stars' without shows eligible for the gold Logie? Who is Bec Hewitt?
Was good to see John Wood get the gold Logie; like another poster I would have kicked the TV in had Rove won.
But seriously, if you just wanted a night of harmless, fun entertainment, the program certainly filled the bill. Also good to see a program that allowed older viewers (like me) to engage -and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
Worst part of the Logies?
Peter Helliers woeful comment (I can't bring myself to call it a joke) about seeing pink backstage.
Real comic genius at work there Pete!
What is it with the media and that Bec Cartwright? How much are they trying to push her onto everyone? seriously it's a Joke!!
I too was confused by some of the nominations last night, until I thought about it.
Why was Bec Cartwright nominated when she's been absent from the screen for so long?
Why didn't the Commonwealth Games coverage receive a nomination for Sports?
I'm thinking that perhaps only programmes/personalities from the 2005 calendar year get nominated, which would explain both these anomalies. TM - is that right?
Tribal Mind replies: Yes.
Most overused word on the red carpet: stunning.
Arrrrgh...
First of all...John Wood winning who cares?...Jessica Rowe did a good job ...Joan Rivers was fantastic...saved the show...I notice bimbo Naomi Robson was all glamed up at the logies while the real media/reporters such as Tracey, Sunrise, Fergo etc were all still in Tassi on the job....and finally Bec and Little Lleyton, WHO on earth would bring their child to an awarwds show and plonk it on the microphone stand!!!!!!!!!!!UNBELIEVABLE ...morons , puke, get rid of them
Re the Logies - there were no "best" anything last night - the TV Week-reading morons do not vote for who is "best", just who they like best. There is a vast difference.
Every year i watch the Logies and voew i wont again. It is so so boring everytime. the only time it was ever good was when Andrew Denton hosted. Bert was terrible and competely unfunny, Gorgie Parker appeared to reading notes, Jana Wendt looked like she was forgetting what she was going to say.
The entire broadcast from the red carpet to the awards (except the winners) was Channel 9 focused.
What was with Jessica Rowe talking to Chris Noth as if he was in fact his character from Se & the City, how embarrassing what did she expect him to say to that.
Virtually all the hosts, probably Lisa McCune excepted were terrible, the only redeeming features were Adam Hill, Pink, Chris Lilley and Katie Ritchie and John Wood finally winning.
I can't believe Bec and Leyton pulled that baby stunt, so desperate.
The 2006 Australian Logies at the special time, 8:30 last night, was proudly sponsered by the makers of "Syrup of Ipicac", 'get it all out'.
blurrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
drip drip...has anyone got a spare bucket?
Of course John one the gold... ummm won the gold. Was strange to see Play School get a logie, but since that prepubescent pap 'naybores' had already been so-honoured, it reinstates the award's lustre somewhat.
As for the five hosts..... bring back Andrew Denton or Joan Rivers (I hope someone explained what an honour it was for her to be allowed to parade her facelifts in front of King Eddie) Or allow just one host...Too many cooks etc. and the broth is starting to get distinctly flat.
TM: How did seven's Movie do against the lurgies?
Tribal Mind replies: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen got a million viewers, not bad for any Sunday movie.
I think the logies last night showed once again that if you want quality programming, you really should be watching the ABC - now if only we could get a bit of that old good aussie drama back on aunty.....
eerh hmmm.
Are you there Tribal Mind? or out of it?
I thought my last comment was funny, witty and extremely relevant to the blog topic.
The logies are a puke fest like no other and should be satirised as mercilessly as possible.
Also, could it be true that you disagree with my assessment of KAK?
Please explain.
Tribal Mind replies: The only editing that happens on this blog is to avoid defamation and gross offensiveness.
A blog on ratings gets bumped to Logies. Keep it up Dear Aussies and before you know it you might have a real less moderated blog on National Issues and what; behold a comment from around the comments almost live. We don't yet have that in Canada. But the race is on. My money is on your broadband distribution beating ours. Then Sidneysiders I will still (Non-Specific-Deity) thank God. For the demise of the Metro attack by way of sressed out resident beats whole nation hands down. Losers be the city folk all around. This ones goes all around the world. Serated filliting knives with or without scabord only 99$. Go Logies Go! Yah!
I was pleased at the announcement last night that Love My Way, the best locally produced drama I have seen in many years, is coming back for a 3rd series. I was disappointed though to hear it will be moved to Foxtel's Showtime channel. How many other fans will miss the new series because they can't afford to upgrade their subscription package?
Tribal Mind replies: Isn't Showtime on the basic package?
In regards to "with held @", what was all that about??? And in regards to the Becs baby stunt, it looks like Australia has finally got it's own desperate housewife.
TM, Showtime is currently bundled with the movie channels on Foxtel, an additional $14.96 per mth. Foxtel has already done this once. The 1st series of Love My Way was on Fox8. It was then moved to W for the 2nd series was, which analogue subscribers did not have access to unless they upgraded to digital.
Tribal Mind replies: This would explain the small audience for the second series. Another argument for letting pay subscribers choose their own "basic" package. I'd choose movies, comedy, news and Simpsons.
Hi TM
Re. the Logies last night, why does any network still want to hire Bert Newton? The man is a snooze and NOT FUNNY. I can respect him for his mammoth contribution to television over the years, but someone needs to tell him politely it's time to retire gracefully. That said, I loved the posthumous duet he performed with Graeme Kennedy last night. Very touching.
Re. Channel 7, they have been showing new eps. of Will & Grace 5.30pm Sunday afternoons. What happened? They just seemed to pull the plug and not tell anybody. I am curious as to why they're not showing the new eps. in prime time. Many thanks.
The Logies presentation was an absolute disgrace!
Having been overseas for the last few years I decided I'd keep an open mind, despite the many comments on this site regarding Nine's poor performance, Mcguire, Newton, Rowe, etc.
Unfortunately, I have to say agree with them all. It was truly appalling! I had to turn it off after Newton's cringe-worthy 'introduction', and the ringing of Mcguire' mobile. Hey Moon Face, you're neither funny nor entertaining! Even Mcguire looked bewildered.
Note to baby Packer. Mate, it's pretty clear Nine's just not happening. Your old man must be looking down shaking his head at the dross it's pumping out. Personally, I think it's terminal. Put everybody out of their misery - shut the thing down!
Mind you, have a look at the competition. It ain't much!
After my foray onto the commercial stations I think I'll go back to the relative comfort of the ABC and SBS.
I have heard that Bert's Family Feud is doing well now, and even beating Deal or No Deal in some states. Is this true?
On another note...I couldn't really give a crap about the Logies but am glad John Wood got the Gold. You can't compare his acting abilities to Bec, Ada, Rove, etc. For once the right person actually won the Gold. Who cares if Blue Heelers is less popular now, that doesn't take over Wood's acting ability. It prob wouldn't have taken him 10 years to win it people other than teenagers were voting.
Tribal MInd replies: Last week DOND averaged 929,000 and BFF averaged 606,000 (better than the 450,000 he used to get). DOND was on top in every city.
This is not about the logies, which I stopped watching about 1980 when they stopped having drinks on the night.
This is about SBS and the Mythbusters show which has gone into serious repeat mode, the odd repeat I can live with but this is getting silly. If SBS don't have access to fresh Mythbuster episodes then how about doing everbody a favour and showing the next season of Top Gear. TM do you have any idea as to whats going on?
Tribal Mind replies: There was a fresh episode of Mythbusters as part of the Logies last night.
I thought I would give the Logies a go this year and decided to watch After 1 hour into the event I was done. I forgot that 13 year old girls are the real voters of this trash - the same ones that reag TV Week. Honestly who reads this magazine other than bored houswives and tweenie try hards? Don't we all just use the free Tv guide in Sundays paper?
What did it for me was when people like Adam Hills missed out on best new talent to Home and Away cardboard cut outs that come and go as quickly as yo yo's.
I think the only way we will get a true perception of the best shows and talent is to have a panel covered by general public, actors, execs and academics (maybe bloggers to!) decide who should win. Combine this into an event for film and music and you have a real event (don't get me started on the ARIA's - what exactly constitutes total record sales?).
As for the actual telecast, I was looking forward to seeing Bert in action - very disapointing, who were the writers? From what I saw on the highlights, Joan Rivers stole the show. Of course she was going to behave that way, hasn't anyone seen her on the red carpet before?
Oh well - back to sitting around till midnight waiting for great shows like Six Feet under to come on!
This year's Logie Awards had to be the most boring drivel to ever grace our screens. The SBS weather would have provided more entertainment.
The presenters were bland and lacked the ability to make the awards entertaining. The only highlight was the Cirque du Soleil performance.
Someone needs to tell Bert, it's time to go!
Why was Joan Rivers' first f-word bleeped and her second not? Was someone slow on the buzzer?
Rivers verbalised what I imagine many of the international guests have running through their heads - that they don't have a clue who anyone in the room is. It smacks of desperation when the organisers give serious air time to international star who will deign to turn up, even if their show doesn't appear on Australian TV (Rivers) or they in fact have nothing to do with television at all (Pink).
I would never normally bother replying to another blog entry but "with held @" has just baffled me. You aren't by chance Daryl Somers script writer are you?
Insane ranting or what?
Tribal Mind replies: we may all be missing some nuances of the Canadian language.
I thought cirque du soliel was crappy, elitist rubbish. Instead, I would have have been happy to come on and do a few tricks with my hoola-hoop and baton.
"Tribal Mind replies: The only editing that happens on this blog is to avoid defamation and gross offensiveness."
Should of deleted Adrian Vandenburg's post then! The only cringing done was while I read that dribble..
I turned off the Logies after Bert's opening intro. Its amazing I stayed that long, after witnessing the Red Carpet Arrivals show and was embarrassed at some of the questions asked.
So thanks to all the blogs here which have filled me in on what I missed and now I know, I did the right thing in turning off the TV.
I think the high ratings can only be attributed to the fact that noone can believe how bad this show is unless you watch it (and pray that just one year, it will be half way decent).
Sorry, NEIN have dug an even deeper trench in my mind - AGAIN!! On Sunday I tune in to watch the Swans game at 1pm and even BEFORE the match has started we have to endure another so-called LIVE CROSS to get .. er .. what? The usual suspects trotting out yet another bunch of twaddle on Beaconsfield. Come on Eddie, if you think that couldn't have waited until the 1/4 time break you are a desperate man. Why not simply run an info banner across the bottom of the screen like you do for the cricket? An utter waste of time. And how can they even compete with the other channels when they can't even start a scheduled show on time? A bunch of amateurs.
I know it's Monday, but there's too much negativity here people!
I had a great night last night!
After watching Richard Carleton's last report for 60 minutes (Vale, Richard!), I then watched repeats of series 1 of Spooks, originally on the ABC, now on Fox. Two episodes I'd recorded on Saturday, and then another as it went to air.
Some programs are just so good they warrant being repeated.
So while some folk subjected themselves to mediocrity (logies), I had a great night!
Sal
Exactly!..why the international guests? and why blame Joan for going off like that?....If the Australian networks and the cobwebbed minds of the 'big wigs' arn't shaken up soon...we will continue to produce mindless shows that repeat the same story lines, employ the same anglo australian actors and do not get into the 'guts' of a real Australian story..hence why will we may aswell pre record the Logies every year...same ole' same ole'...no wander actors go overseas to 'make it'...what is this crap! ...ps regardless of why or how, still glad John Wood got the logie...(even if the teenie boppers dont know who he is)
slippery sam....perhaps Nine should give you your own show , up against Desparate Dancing with the Stars...watching you do the hoola hoopis gotta be better than watching Drongo Daryl & Co.
Really can not understand all the surprised people berating the Logies. The Logies are the Logies like a McDonalds is a McDonalds. To watch the Logies and be surprised to find it is banal, badly put together, ego candy for the so called celebrities, with "Inrternational Guests" only marginally better known than this months Home and Away starlet, is like walking into a Maccas and reading the menu for something different from the last Maccas you went into.
Many people love to watch celeberities patting themselves on the back for very little and that is exactly what the Logies is about and who it is for. Whether the votes are cast by pre pubescent girls or not is irrelevant.
Apart from an accident of nature when Andrew Denton was given the stage for the night, the show is predictable in every detail. If it is not the sort of thing you want to see, do what I do - watch something else or turn off.
7's movie did remarkably well, with a million viewers. It was entertaining in its own way but basically a load of fantasy rubbish full of celebrities and special effects... errr wait a minute wasn't that pretty much the Logies? Oh well, next year a video!
All this Logies bashing is quite entertaining in itself, folk.
Let's keep in mind that the viewing public in this country have a strange fascination with "train wreck" TV. The presentation was so woeful that it was hard to not want to sit and watch how dire they could get. The Logies have always been an embarrassment, so lets just all take a deep breath and laugh it off.
If nothing else, the Logies was a perfect program to prime us all up for tonight's Big Brother Adults Only. (I'll bet that one rates too!)
Charlie, I too was very annoyed to hear that 'Love My Way' will be on Showtime. This is not on the basic package, so i will wait till it comes out on DVD till i see the third series, i think it is really sneaky of Foxtel to do this, but there is no way i am updating my package for one show, i don't care how good it is.
the logies were so pathetic (but me more so for watching)
I have to ask.....did the teleprompter break down?? - everyone was reading notes...it looked very cheap.
As for Joan, still cant decide if she was drunk or acting - either way she was brilliant.
And enough about Bert and Graham...if that isnt the most hideously closeted love affair i dont know what it. Let the man rest in peace....
dont let me get started on Bec either.
Hear hear Ryan! Adam Hills missing out on a logie to some Home & Away 'star'let that no-one will remember in a year is a travesty. Adam has been gracing out screens for years now as a host, and/or comedian and deserves the recognition as being the ABC's highest rating star. Even Jennifer Hawkins deserved it more!
"Tribal Mind replies: we may all be missing some nuances of the Canadian language."
Or some nuances of French translated to English by Google.
Is it just me, or do I rmember "Most Outstanding New talent" Chris Lilley formerly being part of the gane from "The Big Bite" from a few years ago?
Which would make him a slightly used talent as opposed to a new talent? Which would make him ineligible for a New Talent award?
Adam Hills was robbed I say!
New Talent wins for H&A truly back up the Chaser's claim that 13 yr olds with mobiles were going to decide. H&A hasn't won THAT many awards in years!
Ok for one thing - Im not really that fussed on the Logies i didnt watch the actual show only the red carpet bit, But being said i dont believe that you should win a gold Logie for just doing the same thing for 10 years. He played the same character, i highly doubt that his acting skills were pushed to the limit on Blue Heelers. I don't know if anyone in the Gold category deserved it really. If Magda Szubanski or any of the Kath and Kim girls were in it then it might of been a bit more credible. Those are real actors - people who create their own show and characters.
I hope tomor we will all be over the Logies bashing and can talk about some good tv!
Good night!
David H in case you haven't been into a maccas for some time, there are now 'healthier' options on the menu - like water. Maybe we will see some healthier options on the Logies one day?
I'll take my Six Feet Under, a side of Spicks and Specks upsized with a Sopranos and ensure you remove the Daryl Sommers as last time it tasted - not funny but a little weird!
By the way..who was the 4th guy who came up with Vautin, Johns and Harragon to accept the gong for the NRL footy show?
Cab any of the genuises out there tell me?
I whine every year but I still hoped that the logies would entertain me but nope disappointed again. Adam Hills as far as I am concerned is far more talented and funny (thus more attractive) than any Home and Away himbo. The best part apart from Joan annoying the hell out of PBL execs by dropping the F word and being heard loud and clear was Shaun Micallef and the Test Pattern thing. As for wheeling out Steve Vizard the crook and trying to make him look like a victim of the powers that be Please... Oh yeah Bec it is time to go away- practically admitted she is retired gee something to aspire too a washed up soapie starlet and pop star with a kid and rich husband wow! What about people who actually work hard everyday and people who cure disease and make the world a better place. Seriously if we gave them the same amount of money and time we gave the self indulgent tv industry we did last night we could accomplish so much.
Hey Ryan, would you like to eat that meal in HOUSE or take away?
I'm a bit late to comment on the Logies last night. After downing a few chardies I realised i wasn't drunk -but the show really was as bad as i thought it was.
Didn't watch the whole thing - the arrivals stuff is just sh*t in my opinion - i don't care what $50000 dress you have on or what tv show or book you are plugging.
Tuned into BB06 - which surprisingly came across as more professional and more entertaining than the logies i caught after 9pm.
Yep there were some truly awful moments from 9pm to whenever it finished - i saw the sun come up...
Bec and Leighton - they make Britney Spears look like mother of the year. Let's parade our 3 month old daughter in front of 1000s of strangers and way past her bed time - no doubt hoping to make a few more millions from Woman's Day or whatever. Thank god for Rove and Peter Helliar's remark afterwards - "left theirs in the car!"
Steve Vizard and Michael Vitch - these 2 stewards weren't funny 10 years ago and they weren't funny last night. And Steve laughing at his misfortunes weren't funny at all. He is a crook and he should have gone to jail - not allowed to camp it up and get cheers for it!
Cirque de soleil - yawn! seen it far too many times - same old same old.
Bert Newton - he was SOOOO funny during GMA - some of the innuendo was hilarious - had me in stitches. Now that he is back at Nine where he belongs (and the station that sacked him remember) he is no longer funny and just arrogant. His arse licking of Eddie and his execs is excrutiating.
OK OK - i know - it is the logies - what do you expect - and i agree that the Oscars, Emmys and Grammys have had bad bits too over the years.
So for fairness, I have to admit there were some genuinely good moments - that will be remembered for a very long time.
Joan Rivers - i don't care if she was drunk or not - she made the logies bearable. Only one other performer can have me in stitches at the Logies and that's Dame Edna!
And Joan actually did say out loud what a lot of guests and viewers wished they could say - "what the F*ck am i doing here?"
Pure brilliance!
And Chris Lilley's Didgeridoo dance act - was sublime. Tacky and silly - and probably offensive to some lefties - but absolutely brilliant entertainment. I saw him on BigBite and found him entertaining and glad he is being given the chance to make some good TV. I hope he'll be a silver or gold logie nominee next year - well we can't have bloody Bec or Bert again - can we?
Logies highlights - Joan Rivers - I nearly fell off the chair laughing.
And did I imagine a package showing Karl Stefanovic and Jessica Rowe laughing?? It seemed as though the producers had been reading this blog at times.
I agree that Adam Hill was robbed! Another great round of interviews. I think the Chaser team got John Woods over the line.
I say the red carpet arrivals for the first time (wanted something distracting whilst ironing) who was the guy? He (in fact the whole program) was extremely embarrassing. I thought it was an ad for the designers and jewellers. Megan and Jessica - can you get a couple more adjectives - I got fed up with Megan's - "you look stunning!" to everyone.
I thought that Bert's hosting was dreadful. Lame and tired jokes. Saw a little of the others and not very impressed with any of them. Just stick to one good host (or maybe you could get Chris Lilley and he could do all the characters for his show). On Chris, congratulations on your logies, well deserved. I do think John Woods deserved his Gold logie, although I think the Chaser team got him over the line. Their skit on Friday night was priceless!
I did see the homage to Australian drama - it was depressing to be reminded of all the great drama that has been produced, to what is now currently produced. A real shame. We need more quality Australian drama.
The Logies were fantastic. We had a big storm which took down the power lines just before the show started. The electricity only came back on just as Joan Rivers was in full flight. I watched that then turned the tv off. Funniest five minutes of Aussie tv I've seen in ages. Hoorah for the Logies!
I've always looked forward to the Logies but after this year's effort I'm not so sure I will again. Bert's introduction was a real let-down and dampened the proceedings somewhat being too long, self-indulgent, egotistical, sycophantic and just not funny. The nostalgic duet later with Graham Kennedy was well done though. Maybe they should have limited his involvement to that. By comparison, Lisa McCune, Ray Martin, Sigrid Thornton and Maggie Tabberer shone as brilliant presenters. Reuniting some of the old partnerships from yesteryear like The Sullivans, SeaChange and Sherbet, as a celebration of TV's 50 years was brilliant. Maybe they should have done a few more of those. The Play School award was presented well too.
Apart from Joan Rivers, who was irreverent but funny, the overseas presenters were a waste of space. They looked lost and bewildered which really made me cringe. When will the Logies producers get the message that everybody hates these overseas b-grade being rolled out every year to provide embarrasingly cringeworthy moments. We already have enough of those with our own bogan celebrities like Bec and Lleyton Hewitt parading their poor baby in front of the camaras to boost their celebrity status.
There were some really good moments like the Chris Lilley 'Indigeridoo' performance, Adam Hills's backstage interviews, Mythbusters, the Chaser team and some of the TV flashbacks.
They should really take a good hard look at the awards next year. Make them less about popularity and more about the 'Most Outstanding' categories. They need to talk more about what happened in Australian TV over the past year and have the presenters just present the awards and walk away rather than attempt to be funny when they're obviously not. also how about Adam Hills for host next year.
Channel Seven needs to do something better than the Great Outdoors to counteract 20 to 1. If that crap show didn't provide such a strong lead in for Cold Case, i don't that other crap carbon copy of every other crime drama show would beat Desperate Housewives
What was the breakdown in viewer numbers of Friday night football between Rugby League & AFL?
Tribal Mind replies: In which city?
The most interesting battle occurred after 9.30pm last night if seems. Viewers preferred brains over implants.
Enough Rope with Andrew Denton 1.04
Big Brother Adults Only 0.98m
Commander In Chief 0.95m
Hotel Babylon 0.74m
Like everyone else i woke up to the delightful news that the miners have been rescued and brought to the surface safely. But how badly did every channel drag the whole coverage out? I normally catch the news and weather while I get ready but no, every channel was about the mine rescue. I think all the channels have practically interviewed the entire town of Beaconsfield already. The ironic thing is that after today, the town will pretty much be deserted. Now is the race of who gets the first exclusive interview. Apparently they are instant millionaires already!!!
Which network had the best coverage of the Miners rescue this morning? I watched Nine: mercifully, we were spared Jessica Rowe's inane comments and Dicky Wilken's prattle. Tracy Grimshaw and Karl Stefonovik did a professional job, which would have been made all the more difficult due to Richard Carlton's death.
Nine really should bring Tracy back to the Today Show, and relegate Jessica Rowe to some lifestyle program(which she seems better suited to).
I'm not surprised the ratings gloss has come off DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. The second series isn't really up to the high standard of the first one!
The Denton Show last night was compelling, especially the Leunig interview, although Pink was entertaining and surprisingly intelligent as well.
Finally, a question for you David:
is there any chance LOVE MY WAY could make it to free to air TV?
I think it'd be a great acquisition for the ABC.
Tribal Mind replies: Unlikely, because LMW means prestige and awards for pay TV, even if the audience is small.
Now JAK, don't hold back, what do you REALLY think of Channel 9 and its Monday programs?
Considering that the audiences for daytime are always older I've often wondered why the networks don't show any British programs. We all know that the ABC has a huge following with older viewers and British dramas always attract the older viewers in prime time, so I thought it would have made sense.
What a fascinating week of media watching we have had. Wasn't it wonderful to see the so called stars of morning and evening current affairs trying and failing to keep the Beaconsfield mining rescue interesting. Naomi is a prime example - you could tell it was the last place on earth she'd rather be and she just couldn't keep the snarl off her face at one stage. There was NOTHING that would have stopped her attending the Logies, even if the men had walked out on her way to the airport she might have driven past them to get there. The whole ordeal has shown what a shallow, bumbling, imcompetent, egostistical, and vain media contingent we have in this country. And what priceless live television Channel 9, watching a furry microphone on the end of a stick held close to a mobile phone to get the audio from John Howard. The media frenzy on the stories of the two miners will now begin in earnest, the only good thing to come out of that will be large cheques- but let's face it, they deserve every cent.
I concur with SC that I was sicked of the blanket coverage of the trapped miners, especially the 3 commercial networks. I wish the miners well but I turned the tv mute whenever I had no options. Whilst watching the double episodes of Babylon, I had to endure a couple of screen alerts and breaks that clearly slowed the pace and annoying to viewers. Our local tv journos have taken on the American culture where they need to analyse every single details of the rescue operations. So boring!
ABC & SBS are the most dignified amongst the unethical pack of vultures!
David
Is it just me or is this blog now just being exploited by C7 and C9 publicists to talk up themselves and talk down their opposition?
Tribal Mind replies: No way to tell, and I'm not going to start censoring just on suspicion. I like to think the blog is self-correcting.
Could you please tell me what the ratings figures for Boston Legal and Supernatural were last night? Do you think Channel 10 will keep Supernatural?
Tribal Mind replies: BL 491,000, S 810,000. My guess is Ten will soon move it to late.
Most Logies aren't the best but this years seems to be not necessarily bad but missing a pulse. I thought the 5 host coming out and doing a bit of a monologue before a montage of clips of clips was great but sorry Bert I think your time maybe up.
I think that next year they may need to look at someone with a bit more international experience to produce the show, the set and room are great but the rest is very average no wonder the industry is in trouble if this is the best we can do.
Don't force the presenters to be funny if they are a comdian then let them be natural if not just let them present, and give Adam Hills a go next year. This would be the toughest gig for anyone as the crowd doesn't seem to have a sense of humor on the night Wendy Harmer would have to agree I'm sure but I think Adam could pull it off.
I think they need to have more industry voted awards to give it a bit of creditabiliy otherwise the future logies nights would be renamed Logies :Neighbours starlets V's Home and Away starlets.
I concur fully with Evan's comments about the Today Show's coverage of the mine rescue. It was great to see Tracey back; she and Karl have a terrific rapport and that is sorely missed.
If Tracey hadn't of been on I would have switched to channel 10 - under no circumstances would I have 'made the switch' to Sunrise - well at least while David Koch is on. Simon Reeve would be a much better host.
Any news on which network has bagged the Miners Interview. Looks like they were pretty happy to see Kochie and Mel, or has Eddie got out the cheque book?
The miners are out and that's great news. I have to agree with everybody that has already mentioned mentioned how annoying the networks have been with the coverage.
In particular I want to mention the news breaks that reported nothing new and the news bars that interrupted regular programs. How annoying were Ch 7 on Sunday morning shrinking their screen by one third for Sportworld, so they could show live footage of the mine on the side. Nothing was happening!!! What was the bloody point? Why would people bother buying big screen TVs if the networks are going to reduce the picture and fill the screen with news bars and rubbish? I gave up and switched to the ABC's Offsiders, for the first time.
Ch 9 is not any better. While watching Hotel Babylon we had newsbars interrupting twice between every commercial break advising that the next news update will occur in the commercial break. Are we that stupid that we need it constantly repeated? I always thought that Ch 9 would start stuffing around with the timeslot of Hotel babylon and I was right because they showed a double episode last night. That was bad enough because since it started at 9.40pm it would have forced us to stay up until 11.40pm, but with all the interruptions we were forced to stay up until 12.10pm before the show ended.
Why aren't there any regulations on start and finish times of programs? Why aren't there any regulations on promos and newsbars appearing during programs?
Is it any wonder that viewers are becoming annoyed with network television and looking elsewhere for the entertainment, news and sports?
"The media frenzy on the stories of the two miners will now begin in earnest, the only good thing to come out of that will be large cheques- but let's face it, they deserve every cent."
JP, why would they deserve every cent? They are miners in a risky profession and are already paid handsomely for it. It's not like we live in Dickensian England and they were earning 5 shillings to work a 20 hour day. They are 2 really fortunate men. They may have been trapped in a mine but it was a relatively comfortable and safe situation given the circumstances (food, water, media fawning, apple accessories, tedious minute by minute coverage of every meal and soundbite) as is shown by their relaxed attitude and good health. Offering them millions to tell their "story" (and for them to accept it) when we've been staurated with it for 2 weeks and when their colleague is DEAD is really crass.
David,
Love a good rumour, I heard a theory that Fatty and the Director of the 'Footy Show' had a punch up at the Logies. Can anyone back that up? No, i am not a C7 publicist rubbing salt into the wound..Also good luck at the Future Summit tomorrow, I hope you find that we do have a Future here in Australia, if not, lets go back to the 60's and start again. Where can we read your speach?
Adam Hills, Adam Hills... I keep hearing this guy's name.
Who in blazes is he????
Well said Lex. Miners are paid fine. Why should they get paid so much money? It's not like they discovered some kind of cure to medicine or anything. They were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Unfortunately we everday people have to live through this media frenzy for a little while longer...
Seven & Nine have Specials tonight, from 6pm.. "90 minute presentation live from the mining town of Beaconsfield, Tasmania"
News TT & news ACA.
Yay for the news coverage. I'll watch 5 mins to catch up then watch repeats of House on DVD
"Adam Hills, Adam Hills... I keep hearing this guy's name.
Who in blazes is he????"
Slippery Sam, Adam Hills is the host of the ABC music trivia show Spicks and Specks. He's also a standup comic who has been doing the back stage interviews at the Logies for 2 years now. His Logies is stuff is quite good because he's got pretty easy targets there but I find his stand-up material is really bland. To sum up: Adam Hills is Rove v2.0
why is it that 9 score so well with crap programs...it seems to me that if the other networks showed such crap, they wouldn't rate nearly so highly...is that just me or does there seem to be some inbuilt bias towards 9 in ratings results?
good luck 7, you will need 50+ for dancing tonight to even catch up to 9, only to blow it all anyway by the end of the week...it must be so disappointing to have victory in sight, only to have it fade...what a great start to '06 for 7, but its looking like 9's year again..7 need to be more aggressive, not so complacent...no more mr nice guy, if you really want to be no 1...good luck 7!!!
Did anyone see David Koch enter one of the ambos? I though that was the lowest, I tuned off soon after.
Lex..thanks for filling me in.
Just what we need - another Rove!! ??
What kind of numbers does Neighbours get each night? Just curious.
Tribal Mind replies: 901,000 on Monday. Ten loves it because it gets a lot of viewers aged 16-39.
John, in regard to Kochie entering the ambo, clearly you did tune out soon afterwards or you would have heard the full story which is that one of the guys (apparently a fan)specifically requested for Kochie to be there when he came out the gate, he then called out from the ambulance for Kochie to come over. What exactly was Kochie supposed to do?? Ignore the guy??
BTW I'm getting really over this blog as it seems to have become full of negative whingers, rather than the place to discuss ratings and interesting developments on TV shows that it started out being. If this really is the network publicists your little plan is backfiring, as everyone is just going to tune out!
I missed Kochie in the ambulance but I caught Eddy saying he would shout the town a party on Thursday night. Both networks will do anything to get the story and maybe the miners know it. It doesn't worry me if they make a packet though - good luck to them. Whether thay are paid well or not, people will still watch their story when it eventually appears on TV.
TM, you said that Nine beat Seven in news and current affairs. The totals for both combined were 3.2m. So it must have been close. There was a time when a big story happened everyone went to nin
It looks like these polls change so much.
Oh and i didnt realise CSI Miami was on channel 7?
Tribal Mind replies: They don't really change much (look at last week's and the week before's at www.smh.com.au/tribalmind), except when I make typing errors. Fixed now.
