Now we know the nation's twin obsessions: ballroom dancing and losing weight. Last night 'The Biggest Loser' finale gained the kind of audience normally reserved for 'Dancing With The Stars', as 2.31 million in the mainland capitals waited two and a half hours to find out that Adro had burned off the biggest percentage of his body weight.
That average audience (peaking at 3 million) beat the 2.21 million gained by DWTS on Tuesday. The winning losers stole audience mainly from Channel Seven, so that one of the best episodes of 'Lost' for the year gained only 1.16 million viewers. And Loser fans tuning in early pushed Big Brother's audience back up to 1.40 million, who saw David announcing that he is gay.
Ten's prime time audience share was 35.7 per cent, followed by Nine on 24.4, Seven on 23.9, ABC on 11.8 and SBS on 4.2.

Slippage. The word dreaded by the producers of 'Big Brother'. It happens every season, as the initial curiosity wears off and the viewers realise the inmates are mostly rather dull. Slippage started last night, with BB's audience in the mainland capitals dropping to 1.22 million (from Tuesday's 1.42 million). It meant that BB was beaten in its timeslot by, of all things, Nine's daggy old game show 'Temptation', with 1.34 million.
Not that Channel Ten is worried. It still won the night, thanks to booming figures for 'House' and 'Thank God You're Here' (which took your advice and replaced Fifi Box). Ten's prime time audience share was 28.8 per cent, followed by Nine on 27.0, Seven on 26.4, the ABC on 14.2 and SBS on 3.6. Seven is still ahead for the week, but 'Lost' may lose to 'The Biggest Loser' tonight.

Home for the holiday, Australians watched television in huge numbers yesterday, beginning with 679,000 for the ABC's coverage of the morning march. Bert Newton got the biggest audience he's ever achieved -- 743,000 in the mainland capitals -- for 'Family Feud' at 5.30pm (having a lead-in of 1.2 million from the Anzac AFL game), but Bert's rival Andrew O'Keefe also scored a holiday boost for 'Deal Or No Deal', reaching 1 million.
'Big Brother' is holding up well (1.42 million at 7pm), which leads to your assignment of the day: Tell us, in less than 100 words, what Dr Gregory House would say about the medical incredible of a 19 year old girl and her 36 year old mother who each have breast augmentation surgery seven weeks before becoming BB inmates. No prize, just kudos for your wit, imagination and ability to think like a TV scriptwriter.
Seven won the night, thanks to 2.21 million people watching Noeline Brown get voted off 'Dancing With The Stars'. Seven's share was 36.5 per cent of the prime time audience, followed by Nine on 26.3 per cent, Ten on 20.2, ABC on 11.9 and SBS on 5.0. Seven is ahead for the week so far, but Ten should peg that back with 'Thank God You're Here' tonight and the final of 'The Biggest Loser' tomorrow night.

Seven must be kicking itself for taking off 'Desperate Housewives' during the Easter break. That allowed viewers to remind themselves how much they enjoyed 'Cold Case' on Nine. When the housewives returned on Monday night, 300,000 of their fans did not return with them. Instead they gave Detective Rush one of her biggest audiences of the year, and Seven barely managed to win a night it used to dominate effortlessly.
Curiosity about the good-lookers in the 'Big Brother' house remains intense, with 1.42 million viewers in the mainland capitals sticking with last night's hour-long episode. Ten also scored well with an AFL match in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth and the movie The Italian Job in Sydney and Brisbane.
Seven's prime time audience share on Monday night was 28.0 per cent, closely followed by Nine on 27.1 per cent and Ten on 25.9, with the ABC on 13.6 and SBS on 5.5.

Considering that 2.28 million people in the mainland capitals watched the finale of 'Big Brother' last year, the audience for the launch of BB2006 was disappointing: 1.80 million. It helped Ten to win the night, and it was 200,000 more than the launch of BB2005, but it may not justify optimism that the franchise is ready for a renaissance.
The modest figure was a surprise, considering that these were the best looking inmates we'd ever seen (even if two of them are artificially enhanced). Perhaps their personalities were not strong enough to hold the attention of viewers.
Ten's prime time audience share for the first day of "official" ratings was 34.1 per cent, with Nine on 26.5, Seven on 21.0, The ABC on 14.4 and SBS on 3.9. Ten says it is delighted with the result, which was its best night of the year. It says the audience for Big Brother reached a peak of 2.08 million (that was at 9.08pm) and the show captured 62 per cent of the viewers aged 16-39 who were watching TV last night.
This column is offering a prize to the reader who correctly predicts how much better or worse BB will do this year in the ratings. Is Australia so over it that not even a bunch of hotties can bring us back? Or we ready to start again? Register your prediction by the end of this week.

The Bill got 924,000 across the mainland capitals on Saturday and 882,000 on Tuesday (Melbourne 287,000 and 280,000). Blue Heelers got 689,000 over the capitals and 172,000 in Melbourne.
Hi.
I was just wondering what the ratings for Channel Ten's 'Skating with Celebrities' were like. I rather enjoy watching it and it should give some sort of indication on the success of Channel's 9 upcoming version.
TM replies: It doesn't appear in the top 100 for the week, which means it got less than 600,000 viewers, which is not a good omen. I suspect Ten put it in there out of sheer mischief -- to make everybody sick of the idea before Nine can start its version.
I think Gretel is OK. Anyone would come across badly in that role, and she has the decency to sound a tad self-deprecating.
The only really objectionable thing she ever did was to treat Merlin (in BB4) like a naughty schoolkid and act as though he personally attacked her.
She also used to be a decent commedian, although I'd take Judith Lucy or Jean Kittson (what the hell is she doing with herself now?).
Better still, any of Gina Riley, Jane Turner or Marg Downey (those being their real names, as opposed to Kath, Kim and Marion-the-celebrant!)
I know this debate is a bit old now, but I figured it might get another turn given BB starting.
TM - Any chance of a BB specific blog? Or perhaps a bogan blog
Tribal Mind replies: I'll take BB coments on this blog for a while, as long as they are analytical and not defamatory. Can you give me an example of what kind of comment might appear on a bogan blog?
Hey TM
20 to 1 is on tonight and they are advertising it as brand new but im really positive really sure that its a repeat. Is there anyway to confirm this? does anyone else remeber this episode? its called Tears And Tantrums.
"Bert Newton counts down the moments caught on camera showing the famous (and not so famous) behaving badly and throwing the odd tantrum."
Thanks for Answering if you do that is :)
TribalMInd replies: Nine has started getting Bert Newton to revoice old episodes originally voiced by Bud Tingwell, and perhaps they feel this is enough to justify calling them new.
A member or 2 of tripod could make Thank God You're Here funnier. Or what about Adam Hills, Rove or Peter Helia maybe even?
While nothing seemed different from previous BB launches, I do have to agree, the big man has certainly upped the HOTTIE factor this year. If people watching is your thing and whichever way you swing, if you've got Anna, Dino, Jamie, Krystal, Michael, Claire...... (need I go on) then we will be fairly glued to the sixth outing of our secretly favourite show :)
Tribal Mind replies: Daniel Two, if you are in Dubai, how were you able to see BB last night?
Am currently here on holidays..... thank God for the internet when I have to go back!
So here is a question... Can TM reveal who it feels is the HOTTEST HM? I pose the same question to everyone else....
TM replies: I'll keep my views to myself at the moment, but the readers of this blog may wish to register a vote here.
They were on the whole better looking than previous years. Well the girls were anyhow.
I reckon it will do on par with last year maybe a fraction less
Gretel the most ridiculous she has looked so far.
My money is on the country boy being the gay one.
David, I couldn't agree more: what a bland, boring lot of new housemates! Out of 30000 prospective contestants, this is the best the Big Brother producers could come up with?
Where is the next Tim or Vesna?
Of course, I'll watch like always, but I suspect the ratings for Big Brother will suffer a further decline this year: 1.2 million a week at best is my prediction.
Did anyone else watch THE QUEEN & ROLF last night? Much more enjoyable than I anticipated, and her Majesty is a real star, she should do more TV.
How well did it rate?
TM replies: HM was huge -- 1.29 million viewers. Maybe she was the one who pulled the viewers from Big Brother.
Network 10 would still be happy with last nights BB figures, considering BB05 opening night averaged 1.580,000.
It's apparent that Daniel can't enjoy "The Bill" without knowing how many other people are watching it when he does. It's like a security blanket... being a part of the herd.
How many points separated the networks? Im assuming it was 10 followed by 9 then 7, ABC and SBS
TM replies: see above.
My money is on country boy David being the gay one....
Gaelan or Jamie MAYBE. And I'm predicting this will end up being the 2nd most watched series of BB so far.
Tribal Mind asks: Why do you assume any of them are gay?
I watched Rolf Harris and the Queen last night. What a terrific doco style show - and thoroughly entertaining. It was amazing seeing how the painting evolved from a mish-mash of colours to a brilliant depiction of the Queen. You can have your mindless Big Brothers, for me channel 2 at 7.30 last night was the epitome of great entertainment - and hey, no bums, boobs, profanity or boofheads. Well done ABC, or should I say BBC!
The Queen by Rolf was great. Loved the 'bastards' comment by HM, the bitching about the weather in Sydney and Canada and nice to hear her say 'Naah' instead of a posh 'No' in answer to one of Rolf's questions. Cackled all the way through it and personally I love watching paint dry, so the actual painting technique and Rolf fighting with his pallet of colours was very entertaining. You can keep Bert and all the other pretentious so-called network-appointed 'legends'. Rolf's the only pensioner worth watching and his genuine warmth and sincerity shines through in shows like this.
Oh, and the ABC documentary on Gallipoli last night was fabulous.
I wonder sadly at the fate of those 1.8 million poor souls who still sat glued to BB as they have in past years. The show is not even remotely interesting or intellectually stimulating. And why the hell does Gretel Kileen always look so forced and fake, along with everyone else on that ridiculous show? It really undermines the standard of Australian tv, and insults the intelligence of many of us aussies. The poor soul who invented the show should undergo some serious therapy, or at least seek some serious medical help, because god knows they need it. Those of us on this blog who detest that show, lets just brace ourselves for another erm, stimulating, season of BB *god help us*
All the press, including SMH, are stating that one guy is gay and will break many hearts when it's revealed....
Am I the only one on the planet who doesn't believe that the BB Launch was live??
It's amazing how they managed to get the subtitles for what the girls were saying on the screen, before the words left their mouths.....
And don't get me started about how the people typing the subtitles need to have grammar lessons - I mean how difficult is it to get it right in relation to your/you're and its/it's etc etc etc
TM replies: I'm sure it was not live. It was recorded earlier so they could edit the inmates.
We assume one of them is gay because its says so in the article "Staying mum in Big Bro house" on this website.
Tribal Mind replies: But that article is from AAP, not written by a Herald journalist.
how did ghost whisperer and gosford park rate last night?
TM replies: GW 1.01 million; GP 779,000.
Hi Daniel 2,
BB is like Paris Hilton -- Fairy Floss for the mind. Some enjoy it, others don't. But it's best if it's not analyzed too much :=)
isn't where are they now on seven...or maybe im just mistaken
TM replies: I type so fast, trying to get the news to the people first, that sometimes mistakes creep in. Thanks for pointing that out.
It's times like these I'm glad I've got cable...I don't have to put up with crappy reality shows. In fact, I can seriously ignore the whole thing! Networks be damned!
Has seven given out any indication as to when grey's and 24 will be restarted? And I thank god I didn't switch once to ten to see the BB06 launch. I watched ABC instead.
TM replies: I asked Seven and they refuse to say. They don't want Nine to counter-program.
The Big Brother show is recorded on the Saturday night.
I watched the BB launch with one eye on my newspaper (thanks SMH for the bumper issue of Good Weekend!).
It looks to my mind like ten have taken notice of the controvery over last year's series - and are of a mind to start more! I appreciate that there are a number of measures to 'tone down' uncut (such as editing offensive content with less offensive content, and adding an extra in-house censor) but it seems that this year's mob are even more hot-to-trot and ready to get nude than last year's.
So...what was the big "SURPRISE" on BB then? Is Gretel really a man? Are all the housemates related? Is one a blow up doll? Is it underwater this time??
TM - on one of the articles in your SMH TV & Radio online pages, it has a BB06 article stating that there is a gay male member of the house that hasn't yet been revealed.
I think this series will do at least as well as the last, but only if they can generate some publicity like they did last year with the Uncut controversy. The housemates are a generally good looking bunch, but the mother/daughter revelation wasn't exactly earth shattering. I guessed it the minute they introduced the single mum. I think they should make the HM's nominate in front of each other.
So anyway, my guess is that coming off the back of the Biggest Loser, BB06 will hang on to that demographic for at least a couple of weeks. If it keeps the interest up, I think it will go well this year.
I purposely turned my TV off last night from 7.30pm. Nothing worth watching, I read all my weekend papers and listening to CDs.
RE: Gretel's presentation; I used to think she was a breath of fresh air in the first series of BB, however, success of the franchise has gone to her head and the heads of TEN's stylists. She had tried too hard from the second series onwards and alienated viewers with silly hair colors, inappropriate clothes and diva like antics. What do you reckon?
The Launch show was definitely not live. The housemates went into the house on Saturday night.
The Big Brother show is not recorded on the Saturday night, there is a short delay so that subtitles and censoring can be done. If it was recorded on Saturday then all the "secrets" would eb published in papers and the ratings would plummet.
Apparently the big secret according to the paper this morning is a mother/daughter combination. I'm sorry but I'm definitely not a BB fan. I watched CSI last night. As for all the Grey's fans out there, I sooo can't wait for them to bring it back on. There isn't anything to watch on Monday nights. Channel 7 will most probably air it when the DVD will be out in the States...
Unless something dramatic happens to grab viewers attention this season, I think this will be the last BB ... the concept looks and feels tired.
More worrying is the fact that more people are just looking forward to the Uncut show and not the actual BB telecasts.
I watched a couple of episodes of the brilliant Arrested Development during prime time last night- dvds that I bought on e-bay. Didn't have to stay up till midnight, no ads.Excellent.
BB is the car crash of TV. You just can't help but watch. And with the sets of air bags they're displaying this year...who blames us? Bring on Uncut!
To spoil the party, David is G-A-Y.
TM replies: How do you know?
Maybe Ch10 calls it "live" because the people are "alive".
I'm suprised other stations haven't come up with their spin off of BB.
Now that could be a great episode of family feud with Bert, having competing BB and spin off BB shows fighting it out for a toaster or a holiday.
bring back uncut. y do ppl complain about how rude it is just dont watch it and let the other 1.1million tv sets enjoy it
Whilst we can't be 100% sure of anything at this stage, a number of different media sources are reporting that a) one of the housemates is gay and b) it's David. Check out www.insidebigbrother.com where it's reported to have made the radio.
IF one of them is gay, David would make sense, as he seems to be rather isolated in his daily life, and there would be less chance of the surprise being spoiled by those who know him (much like full listings of who was and wasn't gay on "Playing It Straight" became available on the web pretty much from day one).
yeah i can back it up, he is gay. used to live in melbourne.
TM replies: So was he lying last night about his last relationship, which he said was with a woman?
Tribal, how well did Rolf Harris rate last night? I expect it didn't do wonders, but it was a wonder to watch. A delightful hour spent watching an artwork come to life. Thanks.
TM replies: see ratings chart, above, and response to comment, below.
Someone obviously made a "call" last night as a promo during BB for Melbourne Comedy Gala had Akmal Saleh's big brother beheading line. Seems he was chopped from the final gala line up.
Let the Big Brother 2006 Bashing begin............................
I think Big Brothers rating will fare very similar to the last season this year. I don't think it makes a huge lot of difference if the people in it are more attractive than before, as you can soon tire of watching an attractive person, if there's nothing interesting in personality. That's my prediction anyway.
On another note, Gretel, what is with your shock factor fashion? She seems to have created an image that is eternally hers! A cross between K.D.Lang and Madonna!
I will still watch some of big brother this year. But i would really like to see for a change a mixture between 20 - 60 year olds. Come on! Imagine how much more interesting would it be if you threw a couple of people who have lived extraordinary lives! Beats a bunch of 20 year olds who think that what they have (Probably not a whole lot of life experience) Is what the viewing community wants.
As a 29 year old, i had to laugh a few years ago, upon realising that some of the people who were interesting would get voted off, and i wondered why for a little while, until i realized its obvious, the majority of people who are voting are all teens, who are more interested in a bum dance, or some spikey hair, then an interesting life story.
Oh my god!!! someone on BB is gay!! what a shock... what a hook to reel in the watchers!! wooptydoo!!!
So someone is gay. So what? And the people watching the show because someone in the house is gay... what is it you are expecting to see?
Rolf... you rock. Loved you when I was a kid, and you've still got it.
JAK, As a big brother fan, I can tell you it was filmed on saturday as I was there, it has been on the web since early sunday morn, Yesterdays Sunday telegraph even had the housemates featured in there TV Guide.
JAK, have a look at the daily diary on the official BB website. It starts on 22 April (that's Saturday) at 21.49, with the entry "The first few hours in the house".
Re David being gay: in his interview with Gretel before entering, he used non-gender specific terms when discussing partners. His profile on the BB site is the only male one that doesn't mention "girlfriends". And maybe he wasn't lying about having a girlfriend in the past. It wouldn't be the first time a gay man had a girlfriend (or even a wife) before he came out.
It's not a first to have parent and child.
Big Brother Italy 2004 had a father and daughter on And neither knew they were each in - they met in the house!
I don't see the point in having one gay housemate. Its not like he can flirt with anyone, or do anything interesting just by being gay. If he acted like a total bitch, then it might be fun, but otherwise why???
I never miss an episode of BB.
Never watch it, never miss it.
I agree with Peter - one gay boy is ridiculous! The only interesting thing is watching him flirt with the straight boys and how they interact... I bet at least Gaelan, Michael or Jamie would swing.... One more good looking gayboy would at least make his life more interesting - - and possibly ours...
do yourself a favour and watch TVS on Ch 31.... most refreshing viewing.
It appears Betty and Rolf did exceptionally well, given that Ozsham will not place their meters into the homes of regular ABC viewers. Imagine the real numbers. Ok, I know it's Oztam.
Hi, can you tell me the ratings for last nights Formula 1 race please.
Tribal Mind replies: The only listings on the ratings chart that seem to relate to what you ask are these: 2006 V8 Supercars Championship Series NZ Day 2 (10) 420,000 and FIA Formula One World Championship 2006 (10) 289,000. Was either of those what you wanted? And is that audience figure good or bad?
Out of 11 or 12 housemates, only one is gay? Why not be more reflective of society at large?
Peter et al - I think having one gay housemate (done before) isn't the twist, it's the keeping it secret. Can you imagine the outfall when the straight males in the house realise that they have unknowingly not only lived with but SHOWERED WITH a gay man? The fines will probably reduce the winnings to zero in one day - I can see some of that mob being about as politically correct as herpes in a convent.
I stand corrected. If reading the Big Brother website is what i needed to do to get that right i am happy to say id rather be ignorant
Oh goodie! Big Brother facing bad ratings and possible axe/revamping? Where the hell are the SMART people... like they promised?! Gretal described the 19 year old with the boob job as "smart". What does this show define as intelligence I wonder? Awful.
A really good anti-BB site is generating alot of interest, in case you havent seen it yet. www.eyeonbigbrother.com
Tribal Mind replies: This bunch seems to be not only the best looking BB collection but also the bunch with the highest average intelligence. That may not be saying much, but it will make the continuing audience figures more significant.
Too bad Bert Newton moved to Channel 9. BB might have used him to do the voiceover, then they could try to sell the same old garbage as new. Oh well, Bert'll have to do that at his new station tonight then.
Sorry about the cynicism.
BB seems to polarise the TV bloggers like very few other programs can. Maybe they should do a celebrity version with Jessica Rowe, Bert Newton, Rove, Gretel, Karl and all the other "celebrities" that Tribal Minders complain about!
BB is no different to any other program - if you don't like it, switch off.
BB06's opening night figures shouldn't be sneezed at. It's up against 60 Minutes on Nine, which usually does well; and Nine now has CSI at 8:30. Seven has also gotten into the picture, with brand new Ghost Whisperer (Seven used to just surrender Sunday nights). Considering all these counterprogramming moves, I think BB06 is actually off to a flyer.
The bogan blog was a bit of a joke TM - just acknowledging that some folks might be uncomfortable with the 'pollution' of this blog with Big Brother discussion, and that maybe discussion of all low brow shows could be kept separate from people asking for viewer figures for The Bill.
As for BB, I thought Ten kicked some ratings arse to have it improve in season 6. Comparing it to the end figure for last year instead of the start is unfair. Obviously, the improvement on last year's opening owes a lot to TBL, but I think it's also because last years twists and housemates were an improvement,
So far I think the housemates are beiger than last year - as someone said, no politico (relative) smart guy Tim or whingy, hilarious Vesna, but then again I think the twists are all quite good this year, especially the 'insider'.
As for the gay housemate, my gaydar went in to overdrive about David before I heard there was meant to be a gay guy, so I'd have to say him as well. Was his unwillingness to dish about what supermodel he slept with because he didn't want to reveal gender?
DEAR GOD IT'S HERE!
PLEASE DROP THE AXE BB06. The concept is soooooo over!
I made it my new year resolution to not watch a minute of BB, Survior, Idol, AMRace or any other game show that is WAY PAST ITS USE BY DATE. I'm proud to say, that i am still sticking to the resolution four months in to the year.
I expect that BB will get 900K viewers weekdays(because the Temptation host is so annoying), 1.1M for uplate show(because Aussies are perves), and 1.5M for eviction nights(Unless the rival networks put something interesting on).
Wow - I'm so glad poptaculosity clarified the call for a 'bogan blog' by explaining that it would be for 'low brow' TV shows like BB. I'm not sure if you noticed, but the phenomenon of reality TV has completely changed the face of television, so please excuse the rest of us for thinking that a discussion of its success/failure might be relevant in a blog *about* television.
As for the people who took time to post their highly insightful comments about how they won't be watching BB because it's crap, let me thank you for your highly theoretical contributions to this community of scholars! Can't 'waste' your time watching BB, but happy to spend your time telling us about how you'd rather read the paper? You sure showed us. Refuse to watch even a second of this series huh? Such impressive resolve!
I say that if BB ratings aren't up this year it won't be through lack of trying. BB06 looks fantastic, even though I agree that it could do with a greater range of age groups. The secret mother/daughter relationship won't make the show, but it will liven up the first week, which is usually a chore to get through for even the most devoted fan - people just learning names, working out who can cook and generally playing it safe. The immediate introduction of an 'insider' is more likely to generate interest.
My call is that ratings will be up (and the new voting system will definitely generate more money spent) on last year, as BB has played the audience somewhat. The HMs are young (appeals to the tweens and teens) and hot, but already they are looking less vacuous than the young HMs of previous series. They are young, but more worldly than usual, and I predict will show a power to conspire and manipulate well beyond their years.
Well Bb has started out with its insider failing his first task-no real surprise!
my opinon on viewer numbers will be slighty up on last year due to the new batch of contestants seeming (at the outset)to be slighty more intelligent than previous crops.
BB is threatening to be nastier to them and as an audience we cann't help but watch what suffering these people in "reality" shows go through. So my estimate is 840,000 viewers.
I do hope that Kelli doesn't think that "Reality" TV has changed the face of TV for the good of viewers! Most Reality shows are mindless crap and should be shown in the very small hours of the morning.
I would like to know why, after so much fanfare, 10 has seemingly lost Chris, did everyone hate him that much? Surely the whole series wasn't shown?
Did anyone see Karl Stefonovic this morning tell the old lady and kids gathered around him to wish everyone at home a "happy Anzac day"? Does he not understand what Anzac day is or is he really the dimwitt he appears?
According to yesterday's edition of a popular women's magazine, David of BB06 is indeed gay and 'wants to be an example to other gay farmers." Just like the mother/daughter surprise, BB has put a gay man in the house without the other housemates knowing. I totally agree with Evan, so far an extremely boring bunch of housemates...however, it happened this way last year - they started out boring and became more interesting as the series continued - thank goodness for Vesna and her antics! Fingers crossed for improvement or Home and Away will win out the 7pm timeslot in my house.
What would make BB interesting is if it would put in the same house say a male and female of people from different backgrounds e.g
ppl from a christian/catholic background, muslim background, asians,a few fair-dinkum aussies from the bush, a few homosexuals, Aboriginal background, etc etc...
This would make more compelling viewing... with different dynamics, it would be interesting to see them clash or see the differnt points of view...
What do u think?
I'm pretty sure Desperate Housewives will bounce back to whoop some Cold Case booty next week....With the football meddling viewing patterns in a number of states, DH seems to have suffered from a lack of state-to-state coherency. My bet is a bounce back to 1.9 million next week... And what is with BB? How is it so damn addictive?! How did he round up so many semi-clever hotties?!!!!
TM - I was hoping you could tell me the ratings for Boston Legal last night and whether it won its timeslot. This is not the first time I have asked you about Boston Legal figures. No, I'm not becoming another Daniel with his obsession re The Bill. Boston Legal is one of my fave shows and I'm worried that Seven will take it off air at any time.
Also, just want to say that it's Day 3 and I have yet to turn on Big Brother(it's the first time this has happened as I've watched all the other series). I'm trying my darnest not to watch it this year as I know its crap. It's going to be hard....but wish me luck!
Tribal Mind replies: Boston Legal got 586,000 last night across the capitals, which is pretty good for 10.35pm. Against it, Six Feet Under got 341,000.
How did Hotel Babylon fair up against Commander in Chief??
TribalMind replies: CiC 956,000 HB 836,000
For those who like quirky little documentaries, I see that the ABC is putting on A Place in Slovakia at 10.30pm tonight. It's usually on about 6pm Fridays, so not sure if it's a repeat or if they've shifted the airing time, but the antics of the couple ( the wife especially) trying to buy their dream castle are hilarious and well worth a watch.
This series actually started out as an innocent home-buying show called A Place In the Sun showcasing a British couple each week looking to buy a place in warmer climes. But the wife in this case is such a nutbag that I guess they soon realised that she deserved her own series.
Kelli M (AKA Gretel Killeen), thanks for showing that you are better than people who complain about BB, by complaining about people who complain about BB. The sponsors need to know that BB is crap, so that they will support other GOOD SHOWS.
Are you on Ch.10 payroll? TBL rated well because it was new and fresh. BB06 is living on borrowed time. The concept is old and tired. Who doesn't realise that any of the SURPISES(minor changes) will not stop the housemates from sleeping 12 hours a day and talking incoherent inaudible rubbish the rest of the time? BOOOOORING!!
Anyone who is willing to spend 12 weeks or whatever time being locked away from the REAL WORLD is just not worth watching.
Only reason BB06 is doing OKAY for now, is because people without broadband and the interest to read have nothing else to watch. Repeats of FRASIER or FRIENDS would kill BB06.
Whoops! I just noticed that A Place In Slovakia is on ABC2, not the main channel. Sorry. The last time I lived in Australia we didn't have two ABC's. *is confused easily*
For tubbyk, A place in Slovakia is on both ABC channels, ABC2 gives people a chance to see the awful woman again if they are masochistic enough. I would have drowned her in the second episode! This would have spared us all the sight of her in a supposedly alluring swimming costume. She looked like a Sperm Whale trapped in a String Shopping Bag!
As for Carl Stefanovics "Happy ANZAC Day", he also pronounced Lieutenant, "Lootenant", this is not the US and the pronunciation is totally un-acceptable. Bring back Steve and Tracey with all haste, before the Bogans from 7 take the time slot forever.
Sorry guys but BB06 sucks. I have watched the other years and loved it, but have become bored with the same old, same old. The age range is too much, who wants to watch a bunch of 20 somethings (yet again), get drunk (yet again), who cant control their booze (yet again), who are too immature to handle anything (yet again), stick their tongues in everyone mouth (yet again) and then to watch the people who have an advantage (yet again)eg, the logan brothers, win.....LIKE WHO DIDNT KNOW THAT WOULD HAPPEN???....Boring......sorry BB06, you havent got my vote and I watched the launch show and thats about all Ill watch....
Can someone please explain to me what is wrong with Gretl's face? It looks like it is about to droop off her head. Good on someone so ugly getting on tv i say.
Do have have any idea what's happened to the brilliantly irreverent "The Chasers War on Everything"? It was on ABC on Friday nights and suddenly mysteriously disappeard, they're not in court are they??
I am genuinely bemused as to the appeal of BB... Why do people WANT to watch a bunch of ordinary ockers (and you have to admit, they all are) go about daily rituals with the odd obsenity or lewd behaviour thrown in for entertainment value? I appreciate the concept could be construed as mildly entertaining the first time around, but pleease people, let go!!! Each series gets progressively worse in terms of the HM, why on earth waste your time?
And if it MUST carry on, how about the next 'world first' is to get someone with a bit of intelligence in there, who isn't a complete yob... Let's face it 'youse' should be one of the beeped out words...
Kate...I think there was an announcement at the end of the last Chaser show that the boys were taking a 3 week holiday. They should be back this week.
Chasers War on Everything is on a 3 week break over Easter period. They announced it at the very end of the last show.
In which cities did 9 news get all the extra viewers from?
Which cities dropped DH most on Monday night?
Tribal Mind replies: Nine news beat Seven news in every city but Perth, and did particularly well in Melbourne. On Monday, Desperate Housewives suffered its biggest loss in Melbourne, which suggests a footy effect. Apparently down there, even the women watch AFL. But Cold Case was also up in audience.
Is it just me, or is Big Brother's "Jamie" the reincarnation of Zoolander?? quote: "When I see pretty skinny girls I just think to myself... Why is she so malnurished?" Deep.... very deep. He also described the 19yo who had a breast-job "to increase my self-esteem" as the deepest thinking person in the house... its trash, but its good trash (bit like the OC)
I know I'll get shot by saying this in here but I'm glad Big Brother is back. I enjoy the social experiment and heaps of people talk about it at work. The twist is pretty boring though with the mother daughter but the rumour is that they are gonig to put in other relatives that would make the situatino uncomfortable. Bring on Biggest Loser final tomorrow
Wow...breast enlargements, i wonder what the chances are of them exploding in house? (probably a bad pun)
but seriously ... that would make great entertainment!
Also, isnt it turn off TV week? so are the Australian audience turning off tv or not?
Tribal Mind replies: tell us more about Turnoff TV Week. Is it international or just Australian? No evidence of it here so far.
I can't believe some of the bollocks i am reading regarding big brother. What a load of shite, vacuous bogans sitting around a house being trying to become famous?? I don't know what is more disgusting, the fact that network television think this is entertainment, or that seemingly normal people will actually allow themselves to become stupider by watching this....If you want to see real people doing stuff, look out your windows.
Just wondering how Hotel Babylon is doing in the ratings? It's a very clever, witty and entertaining new show and I hope Channel Nine keeps it on!
Tribal Mind replies: see below for how it went against Commander in Chief on Monday. Nine will keep it on because there are only six more episodes to go in this series.
Suggestion. If you are sick of BB06, please just say "ditto Brickowski" and save us all the whining. Are these people trolls just looking for a bite? Or are they really that angry at the world? Personally I don't watch BB, but it doesn't offend me that it is on the air or that others enjoy it. I know how to use my remote. On the other hand, if you have something interesting to say about BB06 I'd love to read it.
Yay. Off my chest.
Big Brother must be doing something right because they've managed to retain interest in a concept that doesn't really offer anything new from previous series. I suppose it's like driving past a horrific car crash. You know it's probably better if you didn't look but you can't help it. Even though they do seem to have chosen a group with higher intelligence this year than previous years, when you consider they also seem to be a much better looking crowd than previous years including a mother & daughter combo who had matching boob jobs especially for the show, then you can be assured that this series will again be 'Big Brother: Bogans Behaving Badly'.
I wasn't planning to watch any of it this year but with a lack of any alternitive viewing on Sunday night, I found myself drawn to it again like a moth to a flame. I hope I don't get burnt. Ha Ha. I must admit I have been really surprised that BB would score such a huge audience again and that 'The Biggest Loser' has become such a massive hit that it even knocked about 'Where Are They Now' and 'Backyard Bltz' was missing in action.
I can't believe viewers in such huge numbers are watching a repeat of '20 to 1' with a few new Bert intros. Meanwhile, 'All Saints' is doing extremely well on the back of DWTS. They probably haven't had such huge ratings since about five years ago.
Next big test is to see whether 'McLeod's Daughters' can fend off the competition from 'Thank God You're Here'.
Tribal Mind replies: I'm interested in the growing use of this word "bogan". Would readers care to offer their idea of what a bogan is, and why the term is suddenly so fashionable? Is it possible to be both "semi-intelligent" and a bogan, as J Bar suggests?
I guess the standard has been set, to quote one BBB (Big Brother Bimbo)... "Whats the Z for in ANZAC ?
Shouldn't be long now...TEN executives swing the axe to ROVE with 680,000 last night
While there at it can they please remove the OC? or even remove the promo ads so we don't have to be inflicted with it!
I'm just wondering which year the BB mum actually turned 36? At least they've got two Asians this year...
What is so great about BB06?! Its just like any other stupid series. And there is a mother and daughter in the house OMG thats so great. I feel sorry 4 u guys hu actually watch it. I could stare at the ceiling for an hour and get more out of it.
Personally I don't rate BB as having any hotties! As a woman who bats for the same team, the women in BB don't interest me at all!! Plastic bodies and blonde bimbos don't do anything for me. Bring in some girls with spunk and personalities!!!
My aerial no longer picks up Channel Ten. The Biggest Loser, Big Brother, OC, Thank God You're Here, Games Night...etc, etc. Someone is really looking after me!
Bogan?
It's a good substitute for "moron" or "idiot".
These days you get into trouble from the PC police if you use words which may indicate that a person has mental problems.
So "only morons watch BB or BL" becomes "only bogans watch..."
Tribal Mind replies: Isn't there some implication about class or geography in the word?
I hereby wish to withdraw 'bogan' from the everyday Aussie slang vocab.
Seeing how 'bogan' is the Aussie equivalent for 'redneck', I think that anyone who uses the word 'bogan' is in fact a 'bogan' themselves.
So if we can embrace this fact, my hope is that the word will be dismissed from our everyday language as it has been for the last 10 years, when it first came to light for a short time.
I feel it is the 'arse end' of the Aussie language and is upsetting the very much respected Bogon Moth population because of the similarity in pronunciation from three tooth, flanno wearing inbreds, who class kicking their cardboard box down the street as moving.
I hate the word - get rid of it forever.
Thankyou
Tribal Mind replies: Didn't Douglas Addams write about a Bogan destructor fleet?
To read more about TV turnoff week go to this site.
http://www.tvturnoff.org/week.htm
It seems to have started in America but anyone in the world can participate.
watch news if you want to keep up to date, don't watch news if don't give a shit.
Watch BB if you like it, don't watch BB if you don't like it.....
vote liberal if you like taxes on saving, vote labour if you don't
I think a 'bogan' is best described as somebody that is uncultured or totally lacks any class. So it's quite easy to be semi-intelligent and still be a bogan.
The term originated in Melbourne and is more prevalent in the southern states. I suppose the Sydney equivalent has been the term 'westie' but that usually referred to people from the western suburbs. These days though, that type of person could live anywhere in Sydney (Cronulla riots, Bondi pub brawls) so the term 'bogan' is more appropriate.
It's not a result of being poor either because that's 'povvo'. Some of the biggest bogans in the world are rich but definitely lack class, like Shane Warne, David Beckham and Paris Hilton. In America they might be called 'white trash' and in the UK they're called 'chavs'. In Australia they're 'bogans'. And Big Brother has plenty of them.
The losers at the Cronulla riots are all bogans. So are those in certain parts of Sydney who claim that there is nothing to do and that's why they are on welfare.
In my experience it's not necessarily the bogans of the world who watch BB. It's the office workers who get home after an hour plus on the train and need half an hour of mental fairy floss to unwind. And they then gather in the kitchen at work the next day dissecting it. No harm in that.
Tribal Mind replies: Thanks. Meanwhile, why has nobody taken up the challenge to say how Dr House would analyse the matching mother-daugher surgery, whether or not they are bogans.
See urbandictionary.com for a great definition of 'bogun'. If you withdraw bogun from Aussie slang you would also have to drop 'bog laps', the incessant driving around city blocks in clapped out Holdens.
To all those BB fans out there, it could well be intriguing to your fellow fans that you may have done the following today:
1. got out of bed
2. had breakfast
3. went to work
4. gossiped about BB
5. went home
6. had dinner
7. watched BB
8. modelled your thought of the day for tomorrow on some deeply thought provoking tripe from Gretel K.
What an amazing concept - how bloody exciting!! Wow, lets watch a TV show where we see all this - in fact less. Lets all watch a group of uninteresting people sitting around in a design challenged house doing diddly squat at the order of some faceless dickhead (really contestants, why not tell him to simply f#ck off - it could raise entertainment levels to beyond mediocre).
Oh, and one suggestion if you do't mind... GET A LIFE!!!!
I think I remember the term 'bogan' being used by Tim & Debbie on JJJ in the mid-80s, and in the series Australia You're Standing In It. Kath & Kim are the next generation!
I predict that BB2006 will have between 2.28 and 2.6 million viewers by the finale. As much as I hate it, it's like a bad accident, it's gruesome and horrible you just have to slow down to look. Not to mention that it makes me feel so much more superior that those in the house. :)
Having only a passing interest in Big Brother, I have historically watched the Uncut show, tuned in to the eviction show at 7.55pm and tuned out when the name is announced, and used the internet - not necessarily the official site - to satisfy any further curiousity.
This year, however, I've watched both instalments of the daily show thus far, and I might just keep going. Whether by accident or by design, Ten has set up a classic dramatic scenario: two sides (the insider and the boobsie twins) have conflicting and mutually exclusive goals, success for one means failure for the other.
It just remains to be seen how long they can keep this plot going, and what use Big Brother is planning on making of Brokeback David (come on, does ANYONE believe that it was all his idea to keep quiet about his sexuality?).
er..... Vogon Constructor Fleet
"Tribal Mind replies: Didn't Douglas Addams write about a Bogan destructor fleet?"
Hi David, it was a Vogon destructor fleet, although judging by their anti-social, short-sighted behaviour the vogons may have qualified as bogans.
I would refer to the BB mother-daughter as CUBs - Cashed Up Bogans. They obviously have the money to spend on such priorities as boob jobs, but lack the class or culture to understand why people wouldn't find fake breasts sexy.
On another note, am looking forward to Grey's Anatomy coming back and I really wish Scrubs was on earlier. I'm disappointed more people aren't watching Rove, as it's the only show on Aussie TV where international celebrities can be interviewed in an informal talk-show structure. Otherwise we would all have to watch US shows like Letterman etc. or tacky 'specials' on 60 minutes or ACA...
A Bogan beats a brain dead bimbo anytime, after i got hammered for that comment on a previous TM from certain females and their capacity to read bogan trash like New Idea. To me, bogans, represent the trash of society those incapable of not being able to string together a sentence without an F word in it and think wiping themselves out each weekend with booze is having a good time, while heading home damaging cars and other peoples properties. They seem more interested in the lives or more appropriate the non-lives of celebrities rather than the society around them. They are the one's who could tell you the name of some actors kid, but nothing about AWB and we let these bogans vote. Also, they represent the deadbeats from both sides of the Cronulla riots.
Anyway few Bogans would read this site, they read the Telegraph. But the ratings show there are 1.4 million bogans in this country. They are out there and they already dominate our TV culture.
Turnoff TV Week? It doesn't sound nearly as much fun as Talk Like A Pirate Day ( Sept 19th! Avast me hearties!) and where do they advertise this non-tv event? On Tv? Perhaps it's just a cunning plan to give Tribal Mind a week's holiday.
TM replies: Nah, Daniel would still ask for a comparison of The Bill's figures in turnoff week vs turnon week.
Hey Rach - ever notice how the "celebs" only ever show up on Rove when they have a new book / album / movie, etc to flog. Rove is nothing more than an infomercial with slightly better production values. Leave youse with it...
Dr House says: "It seems the artificial ego-inflation associated with the D-grade notoriety bestowed by BB on Housemates (compounded by subsequent night-club and shopping mall appearances) now includes a frightening physical manifestation. This mutation appears to be a grab for further attention from the Australian public, but could always be, one supposes, hydatids germinating in the mammery region... Chase - go break into Karen and Kystal's caravan, I suspect you'll find some grossly contaminated bogan concepts in their fridge ..."
TM: Would you please ask channel 10 if they're EVER going to show the final season and a half of NYPD Blue?
I can't seem to get an answer out of anyone! They stopped showing new episodes halfway through the penultimate season around 18 months to 2 years ago. I didn't particularly want to bother with buying these episodes, but it's increasingly looking like I may be forced to. No wonder people download shows...
TM I am responding to your question simply to say that House would be appalled at the lack of esteem on both mother-daughter's parts in regard to the additional parts, that is. Suffice to say, the first question I would ask both mother and daughter when they are "outed" is "which of you persuaded the other"? -and then vote both off accordingly.
I watch Rove but only because I can without having to think too much.
In fact, I can drink a whole bottle of red wine and still know what's going on.
The content is sufficiently intellectual to satisfy the average moron. OK, a bit harsh maybe. But pleeeaase if they only got rid of Peter Hellier or whateverhisnameis. He was actually funnier with Corinne Grant...funny sometimes how two wrongs can make a right.
ditto Brickowski!!
:-D
How did my fav show go last night?
Thanks Daniel
Tribal Mind replies: As I said last week, I'll do both Bills in the week's roundup each Monday.
Tribal Mind - many of my female friends read this blog with "great glee" and adore your witty (yet sometimes dry) commentary. In fact two of them have claimed that they have a secret crush on you... Please post a pic of yourself for them to enjoy.
Bemused Regards
Hey TM,
Could you please inform me with last night's viewing figures for The Bill and Blue Heelers(both mainland and in Melb.)
Thanks Daniel
Tribal Mind replies: Gees you're impatient. I don't get Saturday's figures till Monday, and when I get them, I will publish them on this site, along with last Tuesday's figures. I hope you'll be able to sleep with all the anticipation.
