Ana-Lucia may be tough. She may be able to smash Sawyer. But she's no match for Jana Pittman. And Cathy Freeman leaves them both for dead.

Pittman's gold medal performance in the 400 metre hurdles last night kept 1.99 million viewers in the mainland capitals watching Channel Nine's coverage of the Commonwealth Games. Under the circumstances, Seven did well to hold 1.35 million for the story of how Ana-Lucia became leader of the second group of survivors in 'Lost'. (Back in 2000, Cathy Freeman's gold medal-winning run attracted 6.0 million).

Those who saw 'Lost' last night can now theorise that the mysterious group known as "The Others" deliberately pulled the plane off course (with that electro-magnetic generator?) and made it crash on the island, so they could recruit certain "good" passengers into their experiment.

By contrast, the plotline of The Games is becoming tediously linear. We predict that after next Sunday, Nine will take this show off air, or run it irregularly after 10.30 pm, forcing fans to illegally download The Games from the internet.

Nine won last night with 44.4 per cent of the prime time audience, with Seven on 26.1, Ten on 17.3 and the ABC on a pathetic 8.4 per cent (which gives a clue as to where most of the Games viewers are coming from). While Pittman was hurdling, 'The West Wing' sank to a new low of 295,000, while a repeat of 'Inspector Rex' on SBS drew 324,000 (but Rin Tin Tin rated better in the 1960s).

Wentworth Miller may be hot, but John Steffensen is hotter. Miller's return in 'Prison Break' on Channel Seven last night managed a respectable 1.19 million viewers in the mainland capitals, but Steffenson's performance in the 400 metres, as part of Nine's Commonwealth Games coverage, drew 1.89 million.

Seven and Ten must conspire to break Michael Scofield out of jail so he can join the diagnostic team of Dr Greg House. THAT would be an unbeatable combination.

Nine won the night, but its prime time audience share is shrinking every day. Last night it got 39.5 per cent to Seven's 25.0 per cent and Ten's 20.1 per cent.

We've got it! The formula that will produce the highest rating TV series of all time. It's called 'Swimming With The Stars'. It's filmed in a pool. You get a bunch of medal-winning athletes to coach a bunch of faded celebrities in relay-racing, and the viewers vote off the ones who don't drown.

On Tuesday night a collection of old clips from 'Dancing With The Stars' attracted 1.3 million viewers in the mainland capitals against Commonwealth Games swimming that attracted 1.9 million. Potentially, that's a weekly audience of 3.2 million for our show. When Channel Nine steals the idea (it certainly beats any of the planned programs listed below), remember where you read it first. And we'd like to hear your suggestions for other formula-combinations that might grab ratings: Commander-in-Prison? McLeod's Saints? CSI: Wisteria Lane?

Nine won the night with an audience share of 42.1 per cent in Sydney and 49.9 per cent in Melbourne. And Nine's news beats Seven's news in Sydney -- the first sign that the Games are having spinoff benefits outside Melbourne.

Most watched shows, Tuesday
1 Comm. Games evening (9) 1.9m
2 Today Tonight (7) 1.5m
3 Nine news (9) 1.5m
4 Seven news (7) 1.4m

8 A Current Affair (9) 1.0m
9 All Saints (7) 951,000
10 The Simpsons (10) 864,000.
The Bill got 836,000 across the capitals and 217,000 in Melbourne.

Last week Nine announced these imminent additions to its schedule:

Torvill and Dean's Dancing on Ice, in which the former Olympic skaters coach celebrities in routines, and the viewers vote them off, "with the contest building to an all glamour grand finale".

American Inventor, in which American Idol host Simon Cowell seeks examples of Yankee ingenuity.

Hotel Babylon, a comedy soap set in a London grand hotel.

Hello Goodbye, a "heartwarming" documentary series about people arriving and departing at Sydney Airport.

Survivor: Panama, the latest series of the pioneering "reality juggernaut", which starts next Tuesday.

Triangle, a miniseries in which Sam Neill plays an eccentric billionaire who tries to solve the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle.

Two Twisted, Bryan Brown's series of spooky stories in Twilight Zone style.

The New Adventures of Old Christine, the latest sitcom from Seinfeld's Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Other programs foreshadowed earlier in the year by Nine are Rome, a miniseries about the rise and fall of Julius Caesar; two quirky sitcoms called Weeds and The War At Home; Close To Home, a 'Law and Order' style drama about sexy young prosecutors; Invasion, about aliens in a small US town; and E-Ring, a 'West Wing' style drama about military planning in the Pentagon.

Channel Seven may be questioning its wisdom in putting its Desperate Housewives up against Nine's Golden Girls. The women's swimming finals at the Commonwealth Games attracted 2.2 million viewers in the mainland capitals last night, while Lynette, Bree, Gabrielle and Susan attracted 1.4 million -- half a million fewer than last week.

The Melbourne-Sydney viewing difference was stronger than ever. The southerners watched Nine news ahead of their dose of Games, while the The Big Greedy watched Seven news and The Biggest Loser before splitting between the Housewives and the Games.

Nine won the night everywhere, but its prime time audience share in Sydney was 43.5 per cent (with Seven on 25.0 and Ten on 15.1) while in Melbourne Nine's share was 51.7 per cent (with Seven on 22.9 and Ten on 12.0).

Updated 12.30 pm Monday March 20

That old Melbourne-Sydney rivalry issue has reared its head again -- and Channel Nine is its latest victim. Nine was reconciled to losing more than $20 million on its 12 days of Commonwealth Games coverage, because it hoped there'd be "spinoff benefits" -- a chance to promote its new shows to a big national audience and bring viewers back to older favourites such as 'Today', 'A Current Affair' and the news.

The spinoff benefits are happening bigtime in Melbourne, where on Thursday and Friday, Nine's news and 'A Current Affair' easily beat Seven's news and 'Today Tonight', and on Friday, 'Today' almost caught up with Seven's 'Sunrise'.

But Sydney is rapidly losing interest in the Games, with TV audiences less than two thirds of the Melbourne figures. Nationally, Seven, Ten and the ABC are surprised at how well they are doing in what should have been Nine's Fortnight of Triumph.

On Sunday, Nine held 53 per cent of the prime time audience in Melbourne (with Seven on 17, Ten on 16 and the ABC on 12), but only 41 per cent of the prime time audience in Sydney (with Seven on 21, Ten on 18 and ABC on 16).

The ABC did particularly well on Sunday out of Sydney's flight from the Games, attracting 294,000 viewers at 8.30pm to its drama 'Ahead of the Class'.

At the same time, Channel Ten drew 316,000 to a repeat episode of 'Law and Order: SVU'. Between them, Ten and the ABC easily outweighed Nine's audience of 535,000 watching the evening session of the Games in Sydney.

Against Nine's Games coverage last week, Ten found that 'The Biggest Loser' and 'Medium' each attracted a million viewers -- which is barely down on their usual audience.

Seven opted out of the ratings race for three days, replacing its hit shows 'Prison Break' and 'Lost' with a lame science fiction miniseries. But its news and 'Today Tonight' were still national winners. On Friday, Seven's morning show 'Sunrise' drew 134,000 viewers in Sydney and 93,000 viewers in Melbourne. Nine's Today drew 84,000 in Sydney and 88,000 in Melbourne.

Seven gets back in the game this week with new episodes of 'Desperate Housewives', 'Lost' and 'Prison Break', although 'Dancing With The Stars' tomorrow will be a collection of old clips.

(Although the two weeks of the Commonwealth Games are classified by the ratings measurement agency OzTAM as an "official" ratings period, the advertising industry does not allow Nine to include its current success in calculations for advertising rates over the whole year.)

Will that be enough to save Nine from the onslaught of Seven and Ten?

COMMENTS

Hmm
Still think its wrong to post official ratings when something is a guess. Should not be up until tomorrow. Just my opinion

Tribal Mind replies: allright then, I'll change it.

  • by Aaron on March 18, 2006 at 04:36 PM

Hey David,
Not sure if its too early to be asking, but what was The Bill's ratings this evening? (Both nationally and in Melbourne)
Thanks and much appreciated!
Daniel

Tribal Mind replies: yes it is too early and why do you keep asking? The Bill's numbers do not change much from week to week. How about I try to find out last night's figure (which may not be possible till tomorrow) and after that we leave it until there's a significant change?

  • by Daniel on March 18, 2006 at 09:55 PM

It's funny people b!tching about Prison Break being off air for one week. I'm currently in the states and there hasn't been a new episode for 16 weeks (most of the shows here constantly chop and change between new and repeat episodes...so annoying). I watched the first episodes of Old Christine and American Inventor and don't see them helping 9 out of it's hole.

  • by chuckaspecca on March 19, 2006 at 04:14 AM

I used to wonder what the big fuss was about Prison Break, when it first started out. Everyone used to tell me it's such a great show, and even people who don't watch the show reckon that Wentworth Miller is incredibly hot. But then I actually watched an ep. of Prison Break and figured out waht the fuss was. It is a real good show

  • by Erika on March 19, 2006 at 12:55 PM

Hi Tribal Mind,
Do you know what the ratings for Supernatural were for last week? I've been watching the latest episodes through downloads and the development in character and season arc has been really good. I hope it stays on Australian TV.

Tribal Mind replies: 759,000 in the mainland capitals -- not great, but probably enough that Ten will keep it on at 9.30 mondays..

  • by riveria on March 19, 2006 at 01:26 PM

You know I was just wondering, how many people watch Prison Break????????There are so many fans on this blog. Not to mention the huge amount of wentworth miller fans. i have been counting and this is just to name a few of them: tess, jenna, andrea, mel, fiona, cassie, helena, annabelle, sahrina, margii, kathryn, alexandra, rebekah, abby slater, erika... i could go on forever, jeez i think i should watch an episode of prsion break the way people go on about it!

Tribal Mind replies: It gets about 1.6 milion viewers in the mainland capitals, sometimes more than House, sometimes less.

  • by Rachel on March 19, 2006 at 04:23 PM

Have you found out yet Tribal Mind about The Bil's ratings?, and ok it will be the last time.
Daniel

Tribal Mind replies: On Saturday, 720,000 across the mainland capitals and 259,000 in Melbourne.

  • by Daniel on March 19, 2006 at 05:18 PM

Is Nine's Today down since the change of anchors? I can't believe Sunrise does better than Today but with the lack of a suitable replacement for Tracey Grimshaw I'd see why people would switch. I"m no fan of Seven's morning hosts - they try so hard - but Nine's hosts don't seem to gel. whatever

  • by jeffbart on March 19, 2006 at 07:42 PM

Ratings, non-ratings, it's all such a pain. Whenever I want to watch TV it always seems to be a non-ratings period and there's nothing on.
When are the ratings and non-ratings periods? It's officially autumn so how come it's still not ratings season? Who determines when they start and stop? Sometimes a ratings period seems to last about three weeks!

Tribal Mind replies: Yes, it's confusing. Audiences are measured every minute of every day, all year round, but the stations reach an understanding that only part of the year will be "official" for the purposes of calculating what they can charge to advertisers. Right now we are theoretically in an "official" ratings period, but because the Games are giving Nine such a huge lift, these two weeks won't be counted towards the totals for the year. Next Sunday is back to normal, and the next "non-ratings period", when they'll show repeats, is around Easter.

  • by David S. on March 20, 2006 at 07:37 AM

Please somebody get that bloody Jessica Rowe off television. I stick to channel seven for most of my viewing at any time of the day but if I accidently bump the remote I shouldn't have to hear her annoying voice. The people on that show don't seem to gel (I must agree with jeffbart on that one. It seems like they find it hard to be normal people.

  • by Sam on March 20, 2006 at 09:42 AM

can't wait until 7 put back on their shows so there is something to watch on TV! must say that all of 9's new shows look like dogs.. maybe the Triangle will be ok...
but what has been amazing me during the comm games coverage is the lack of hosting talent 9 have!- perhaps correlated directly to the abundance of the most irritating 'personalities' ever... james brayshaw really needs to go back to adelaide radio, there is some pommy weird guy in the arvos who is just plain freaky, ray and tracey need to retire. now. and the rest of them are just plain boring...

  • by jake on March 20, 2006 at 10:07 AM

I think it is a very sensible decision by Seven to re-commence most of its winning schedule this week. Once the swimming is done, care factor tends to die a bit with the Games, and it seems we're a nation fairly obsessed with dancing, housewives, prisons and deserted islands at the moment.
As for Nine's new line up, I predict the only thing that will work is the Ice Skating reality show, and even then I think we're talking 1.2-1.4 million a week. I was so annoyed for years by Seven for treating its programs like crap and copying all of Nine's moves, but if anything, this Ice Skating show is actual proof that the only network copying and playing catch up in 2006 is Nine. Good try, but won't be good enough.

  • by Daniel in Dubai on March 20, 2006 at 10:29 AM

Ch9's coverage of the Comm Games has been disgraceful. Anyone would think there has only been swimming and cycling. Day 6 now, and they have shown virtually no team sports but rugby - unless I'm watching at the wrong time I've seen no netball, no basketball (disgraceful in it's inagural comp, and which apparently has some games with no tv coverage at all - how is that possible???), and only a tiny bit of hockey.
Is this just because they have a woeful commentating staff who can only call swimming. I used to complain about 7's coverage of the Olympics, but no I see how much better they really are. Ken Sutcliffe is just no match for "The Dream" to give the daily wrap-up.
As for Ch9 trying to get people to watch their shows - Survivor will work for fans, but no new viewers, Hotel Babylon could be a late night hit, but I don't see it as a ratings winner. As for the "A Current Affair" ads - and the "telltracey" email address - enough to make me laugh out loud - as if Tracey Grimshaw is Australia's Oprah - what a joke.

  • by LR on March 20, 2006 at 10:54 AM

Hello Tribal Mind entity,
Can you please advise how the Today Show is faring against Sunrise? Is the Today's laughing hyena outrating Sunrise's humpty dumpty?

Tribal mind replies: see the column, above

  • by Steve on March 20, 2006 at 11:19 AM

Sunrise is the worst morning show ever!!! It's like watching Play School for adults.

  • by Michael on March 20, 2006 at 11:21 AM

Have C9 ever wonder why they are not doing the right thing or things? C7 seems to be doing everything right nicely (at least better than Nine) at present. For example, thanking viewers for watching their shows, using more upbeat music for promotions (I saw the latest promo for C9 at the Comm Games - it was terrible music, more like a funeral rather than a celebration of new shows), better graphics, livelier colors and various cross-program promotions (although it is kind of too much of it with Dancing with the stars). To sum it up, some people somewhere in C7 have a better idea of managing the whole presentation of the company to its audience. Of course, with good lucks of getting some good shows recently (remember the deals that the stations had with US networks? Not that Leckie is smarter, just luckier) which C9 had in previous years with shows like Friends and Malcolm.
Another thing with C9 is how they are so bad in tweaking a show by chopping one person and replacing it with another (sheer luck if that replacement comes out good but most likely to be a dud - read Jessica & Cameron). C9 needs to completely overhaul its entire programs and start with fresh goals and fresh ideas (read: replace the whole Today team!).
Eddie McGuire should change the culture of the Network completely. Get the broom in and sweep out the duds, replace the old with the new with good ideas (not the loud mouth or identical blodes).
It is not Eddie's fault that C9 is in such a state. However, it will take time to turn it around (like any struggling firms). With good management and good luck, C9 should be back in say 2 or 3 years time. Put in good investments from all layers of the firm, listen to what audience/customers wants (not like Sam C who was too arrogant) and deliver them. It is not too hard, Eddie.

  • by ozboy1999 on March 20, 2006 at 11:25 AM

Haveing recently returned from the USA, I was wondering if any of the Networks Plan to screen the show Out of Practice, It seems to be well made and is very entertaining.
Also it was announced recently that Ten were commisioning some new drama series, I beleive one was called Secretary do you have any information on those?

Tribal Mind replies: Channel Ten has the rights to Out of Practice. No info on when Ten will screen it, or when the new local dramas will be ready.

  • by CheckOnIt!! on March 20, 2006 at 11:33 AM

I am saddened and disheartened by Nine's imminent additions to its schedule. Re-hashed American and UK shows. Cheap bulk lots. It's far cheaper to buy already tested American shows. I wonder if we are losing our identity as a nation? It would be relatively expensive to make an original Australian production, but wouldn't the benefits outweigh the cost? Are we turning into Mini Americans? Have we lost our national culture, language and sense of humour? Remember "Hey Hey" with Darryl Somers out rated everything for many years and it was spectaculary and definitively Australian. The same can be said about "Bourke's Backyard" (until an ego war broke out)Mine's bigger than yours Don!
Are we dumbing down for the lowest common denominator?
There may be another book in this argument for you Tribal Mind!

  • by chrysalis on March 20, 2006 at 12:16 PM

LR - i also think this! But checking the tv guide over the next couple of days hockey netball bball squash etc are supposed to be on - but mostly during the day.
Yesterday during the marathons i was infuriated that we would get a short 2 minute broadcast that was interrupted by a cross over to the swimming HEATS. Heats!!! Not even the final!!!

  • by Annon on March 20, 2006 at 12:26 PM

I was wondering if anyone knows when the show "Bones" will finally get aired? I have been seeing them, but I would still like to know when it's going to air here. All I know is it's going to be on Ch7.

  • by Anne on March 20, 2006 at 12:49 PM

Looks like Channel 9 will finally show 'Six Feet Under' from next week on Mondays at 10.30pm. Shame it has to be up against the equally brilliant 'Boston Legal' on Channel 7. Especially since there's rubbish on every other night at 10.30pm.
Why does Channel 9 have to be a spoiler again, when they could have enjoyed a bigger audience by screening Six Feet Under on a Tuesday or Wednesday night.

  • by J Bar on March 20, 2006 at 01:07 PM

Annon - you're right, I forgot to mention that's exactly what happens - the other night they showed two minutes of the mens' basketball, only to go back to the swimming heats!! Very frustrating.
Also, I did expect more of the team sports this week, but I can guarantee that it won't be at night when everyone is watching...unless it's a gold medal match - and even then it will be highlights...

  • by LR on March 20, 2006 at 01:08 PM

The Commonwealth games presenters channel 9 have hired are so 'engaging' to the audience its not funny. Who put these guys behind the desk?? The interview with Lauren Jackson this morning was so cringing to watch, you could tell she hated it and just wanted to get out of there. Personality + for these people...

  • by peter on March 20, 2006 at 01:59 PM

As with most people, the TV stations have frustrated me enough. I have downloaded the rest of the Commonwealth Games to avoid disappointment when nine cancels them and re schedules to 10.30pm. For those who can't wait, Australia wins.

  • by Dr DK on March 20, 2006 at 02:15 PM

Hey Daniel, now that you finally know the ratings for The Bill, has your life changed for the better? Or were you hoping you were the only one?

  • by Dr DK on March 20, 2006 at 02:19 PM

I actually thinks its pathetic how swimming is all ch 9 put on. Its embarrassing to see how bias it is, as Australia is dominating the swimming. It has seriously got to the point of not really Australia vs the other countries, it is more Australia vs Australia, to see who can beat who's record. It so incredibly boring.
I would love to see a bball, hockey, netball game in FULL. Nno crossing to heats of swimming. No boring interviews, just the games!
It makes me wish i had cable even more! As i could be watching what I want, not want Ch 9 want me to watch.

  • by Annabelle on March 20, 2006 at 02:55 PM

The Ch.9 coverage of the Comm games has been disgraceful. Extended focus on anything featuring Aussies no matter how mindnumbingly boring the sport(hello: shooting, lawn bowls, walking), cringeworthy studio commentary, turgid interviews after each heat of the swimming, failure to give honest live coverage, and repetitive self promotion, are just the tip of the very large iceberg. Guess the alternative is to cough up extra on top of the already expensive pay TV fees. Oh dear. ABC radio thank you again.

  • by Michael on March 20, 2006 at 03:12 PM

NINE NONSENSE
No wonder Nines Games ratings are down, the commentary is totally obnoxious and those two 'in studio' compares are odious.A football hasbeen and a never was, they think there so cute or something, makes me wanna throw up.Such biased commentary as well it's embarrassing, and Daryl Eastlake, last I heard the C.I.A were using recordings of his voice to torture and extract information from suspected terrorists,he is the lowest common denominator, all the others aren't much better either they all should be ashamed of themselves.Nine should have spent everything they had on getting Roy and H.G to do the commentary, not the stiff old regulars like Sutcliff and Warren,I sure hope people overseas aren't hearing these saps.I mean I was watching the bike racing and the Aust. commentator actually accused the winning cyclist,i think he was from the Isle of White or Mann of cheating because he beat the Aussie, his English co commentator seemed quite disturbed at this and in his own way showed his indignation. You would think by nines coverage Aust. are the only ones taking part in the games. Also the coverage is technically ordinary as well the camera direction sucks. The whole thing has made me root for anyone going against Australia, someone should have a word in the ear of the whole commentary team and tell them to pull there egos in and learn some humility.Sorry I'm just really anti nine commentary of the games Anyone else feel the same?

  • by Antmiester on March 20, 2006 at 03:36 PM

Obviously Melbournians will outnumber Sydney siders watching the games. Sydneysiders have a life & well there aint much else to do in Melbourne except channel eddie

  • by Macca on March 20, 2006 at 03:45 PM

I'm no big fan of Sunrise, but I watch it as an alternative to Today simply because I refuse to watcha show that subjects people to Alan Jones' obnoxious views. If they took his little spot off I might just convert (though I'm not a big fan of any of the presenters on either channel, hard to please I guess...)

  • by Jude on March 20, 2006 at 04:09 PM

uh Rachel I think you missed, lets see: Naomi, Taryn, Belinda, Mouse, isabel, ashley...and there must have been more. Prison Break is turning into the show, thats got everyone talking

  • by Rhiannon on March 20, 2006 at 04:17 PM

Please give me a break! The only reason as to why I have been asking is because of the dramatic change in it's figures. In the second week of ratings the show was ranked 38th nationally with 1.1mill. viewers. Today, and 3 weeks later it has lost 400,000 viewers. For any fan of The Bill this would be alarming. So please David don't say they don't change week in week out because this show has changed dramatically for the bad and I just hope the ABC doesn't pull the plug on it anytime soon, because after all it is it's #1 show. David, I know I might we annoying the hell out of you but what is your honest view as to where the show is headed? The better episodes begin May 20th, so would you expect that figure of 1.1m to return? Did last Saturday's Comm Games and Footy steal viewers away from the show, because I doubt The Bill has been under the 750,000 mark for a while?
That's all I have to say for a while, and I promise you that David. Please don't regard me as a TV freak or whatever, because I'm far from it. I'm just a loyal follower of the show, and I hope it stays of the ABC Network for a while to come.
Daniel

  • by Daniel on March 20, 2006 at 05:55 PM

"Sunrise is like Playschool for adults",good observation Michael, and what is it with these presenters wearing those god awful pinstripe suits Kochy you look so ridiculous you look like a giant blotted pin cushion with expensive frames,no offence, and what about that morning tripe with David Reyne and the 'brunette',I've never seen anyone look so uncomfortable on T.V,it's worth watching,he actually looks like he's busting to go to the toilet through the entire show,oh David you could have been someone, you could have been a contender or at least a weatherman.

  • by Antmiester on March 20, 2006 at 06:21 PM

If it was more like Playschool then at least the hosts would speak in standard Australian English, instead of the effected ocker twang that passes for 'ordinary bloke' on 'the telly'. There should be a standard for tv journalists, at least in the pronunciation department. I pity any English students who tune into this show by mistake. They'll all adopt the RSL granny accent of Koch

  • by jeffbart on March 20, 2006 at 09:06 PM

Antmeister. Consider a goldfish that has swallowed one too many ping pong balls. That was Kochie about 10.30 am today trying to be serious about the cyclone. As to Daryl Eastlake you are wrong....now thats entertainment!

  • by Michael on March 20, 2006 at 09:23 PM

I'm really glad to hear C9 is showing the latest Survivor(finally). I believe it has been running for weeks in the U.S. When will it start?

  • by Boris on March 20, 2006 at 11:18 PM

It sounds like jeffbart is suffering from cutural cringe.

Can't you handle 'ordinary blokes' hosting a TV show? Are you trying to say that we should only have elitist private school-educated TV hosts?

Is there such a thing as Australian Standard English? Please explain.

  • by J Bar on March 21, 2006 at 09:10 AM

The reason that Channel 9 is not reaping the rewards for their Commonwealth Games coverage is that the coverage is an absolute disgrace. It is displaying the worst sort of jingoism, nationalism and triumphalism, and I think that viewers are turned off by that.
For example, last evening, so-called track-side commentator, Tony Jones, was interviewing Craig Mottram after the 5000m, and he had the audacity to say something like, "You may have won silver, but for the 80,000 people here tonight you won gold". No, Tony, Mr Mottram won silver, and he was beaten by a better athlete on the night. Do not be revisionist just because 9 did not get its golden moment to replay ad nauseum.
This again shows that Channel 9 under-estimates the intelligence of their (dwindling) audience. I firmly believe that people would have watched competition regardless of Australians being medal chances or not.
Poor old arrogant Channel 9, down the toilet again.

  • by David S on March 21, 2006 at 09:13 AM

I agree - Sunrise is a joke. You can't take that show seriously. All they do is make silly small talk and say pathetic jokes.

  • by Johnno on March 21, 2006 at 09:25 AM

Losing interest in the games and excited to see that Channel 10 was showing a new Supernatural episode last night. Settled in - only to find they had decided to repeat an earlier episode. What sort of dickheads run these places?

  • by Simon on March 21, 2006 at 09:39 AM

Having now checked with Channel 10, they tell me they were never going to air a new episode of Supernatural last night. According to them (Channel 10) it's The Guide's fault. They made a mistake by outlining the details of a new episode....??

  • by Simon on March 21, 2006 at 09:48 AM

Clearly Erika, Rachel and Rhiannon are flamers employed by Channel 7. "Hmm, gee I always wondered what the fuss was about Prision Break but then I watched it and it was great! And now so do all my friends!" They sound like testimonials for either hair removal or premium number phone dating. I can't decide.
As far as Sunrise. I got pay TV specifically to avoid Kochie at all costs. My baby boomer mother loves him though so I suppose that's their target audience.

  • by Emma on March 21, 2006 at 10:05 AM

haha guys give daniel a break. at least hes given his reasons now. i mean.. isnt it what this column is for in the first place? to inquire about ratings and for us to rave on about ratings and tv shows as much as our hearts content!

Tribal Mind replies: Exactly.

  • by clem on March 21, 2006 at 10:20 AM

It was a golden night at the pool so it is understandable that the Commonwealth Games ratings would be so high.
Desperate Housewives did well to capture 1.4m viewers with such stiff competition. It will still be one of the highest rating shows this week. If Ch 7 had shown something else last night, they would have handed Ch 9 an even bigger audience for the Comm Games.

  • by J Bar on March 21, 2006 at 10:46 AM

Jumping in again on the criticism of the Games coverage - I was absolutely disgusted that Ch9 aired a rugby league match on Sunday afternoon in Sydney instead of games coverage. If every other tv show can be postponed for the games, why not a boring early-round rubgy league match.
So much for watching the games live - except for the swimming almost everything has been delayed telecast.

  • by LR on March 21, 2006 at 11:42 AM

TM : figures for A Current Affair ? I assume around 1.1 mil at number 8...
Big drop from 6 pm news if correct. Where did 500 K viewers go ?

Tribal Mind replies: Thanks for pointing that out. Fixed now. Back to Today Tonight, seemingly.

  • by paul on March 21, 2006 at 11:58 AM

How did CIC do last night? So we can work out whether the audience is warming to it or waking up to it, is it possible for you to pull together how it has tracked from its first episode to now?

Tribal Mind replies: it's number nine in the chart published above. Not possible to draw much of a conclusion when it was up against the Games. Next week will be the test.

  • by brando on March 21, 2006 at 12:33 PM

David,
Can you please advise which mornng show is winning the ratings - Today or Sunrise?
Thanks.

Tribal Mind: Sunrise, every day. See details in column above.

  • by Steve on March 21, 2006 at 12:38 PM

what's the point of channel 9 acquiring new programs when it does such a crappy job of airing the programs it has already bought from previous years? we are hardly given the opportunity to catch the shows that are actually of high quality, before they are inexplicably taken off air or shunted to inconsistent timeslots, only to be replaced by sitcom stinkers and endless reality programs.

  • by leigh on March 21, 2006 at 01:08 PM

Parts of the Comm Games have been good and it's easy to see why 9 is getting good ratings, but I'm over the constant promotions of the new shows!! Don't see anything in them that attracts me anyway.
I was surprised that 9 didn't cover the cyclone in the morning, as 7 did. No wonder their News isn't doing so well.
It'll be interesting to see how the ratings go in the week after the games.

  • by neil on March 21, 2006 at 01:30 PM

Hi, just a question - how do the ratings cope with people recording shows and watching them later. I was thinking that a lot of people may have recorded Desperate Housewives. Also on the Games, last night was also the 100 metre sprint doubles and the Mottram final, so channel 7's scores were really high considering.
I would have to agree with all the posts on 9's appalling coverage - I think showing an Australian receiving a bronze medal and not showing any of the other competitors receiving their medals is terrible. Don't get me started on Ray's and Darryl's commentary and condesending terms they use to describe the athletes.

  • by Louise on March 21, 2006 at 01:32 PM

When (if ever) will 'Gilmore Girls' be back on Nine please? It was halfway through a series!

Tribal Mind replies: Probably not till December. You can buy the DVD of that series through Amazon.

  • by Bree on March 21, 2006 at 02:32 PM

Wondering if anyone tell me whether the reality TV boom has really burst. Are there any stats that compare the ratings for reality TV shows from 2004/2005 against each other???????

  • by John on March 21, 2006 at 04:54 PM

i have to agree with rachel, that the most intriguing show on tv at the moment has got to be Prison Break. It really has got everyone talking, and everyone watches it! Even people who never watched actual tv before except for well the news, watch it.

Tribal Mind replies: I'm starting to wonder if there might not be something in the earlier reader's comment which suggested Seven is running a sneaky internet campaign to promote Prison Break. These posts about the hotness of Wentworth Miller and the appeal of the show sound suspiciously similar. The fact is that not "everyone watches it". About 1.5 million people in the mainland capitals watch it, and some weeks it is beaten by 'House' on Ten.

  • by Olivia on March 21, 2006 at 05:47 PM

um emma, i think if you actually watched an episode of Prison break, you would have to agree with rachel, rhiannon and erika, and in case you haven't noticed, i think everyone kind of is really talking about it. did you see the other blog, last week (week 11)? did you see how many people were pissed off by it being off last week? i mean i don't really watch the show but i have to say that wentworth miller is really hot

  • by stephanie on March 21, 2006 at 05:54 PM

Emma i think you should take a look in the dictionary, last time I checked there was atcually a 'Prison' in there not a 'Prision'

  • by David on March 21, 2006 at 05:57 PM

David,
Is that the same dictionary that has 'atcually' in it?

Tribal Mind replies: It is not productive to get into criticising people on this blog who make typing errors. We all type quickly, and there are more important issues than letter transpositions. Probably The Sydney Morning Herald should pay a sub-editor to correct every post, but apparently that is not a spending priority at the moment.

  • by DeanH on March 21, 2006 at 06:02 PM

Looks like Desperate Housewives stole viewers from 10 and ABC. Ch 9 Commonwealth Games viewers seem to be hovering consistently round the 2 million mark each night. Perhaps 7s indecision on whether they would show a first run episode also decreased the number of Desperate viewers. A small victory for n9 though as I think they will all be back to Wisteria Lane next week.
Re pauls post on ACA, I've noticed over the first few weeks that even when Ch 9 news gets close to Ch 7, they lose viewers at the end of the news when ACA comes on. Perhaps a change of host wasn't a good idea after all

  • by Tracker on March 21, 2006 at 06:38 PM

Hey David,
You mentioned that the ABC's new drama 'Ahead of the Class' on Sunday got 294,000 viewers. Was that a national figure or Sydney figure? David, Sorry I know you said give it a rest for The Bill ratings, but could you please post it's ratings figure for tonight and Saturday night in your daily update. I will then GUARANTEE you, you'll never hear of The Bill again!!. I am just interested in it's preformance for the rest of the week against the Comm Games. You don't have to post this message in on this site except for my question about 'ahead of the class'.
Thanks David.
Daniel

Tribal Mind replies: That figure was the Sydney audience. In Melbourne it got 207,000, and across the capitals it got 877,000. Re The Bill: surely you will also need to know how it recovers once the games are over -- ie Tuesday and Saturday next week?

  • by Daniel on March 21, 2006 at 06:44 PM

At last, a place to vent about the Commonwealth Games commentary. I was ready to hurl the tv through the window after listening to the turkey who couldn't refer to the Kenyan winner of the 5000m without calling him a 'little man' with 'little legs' and 'look at the little guy go'. This 'little' man whipped Craig Motram's ass, won the race and was clearly a superb athlete. So patronising. And if this was the best race the commentator has ever seen then he clearly hasn't been watching athletics before 2006.
As for the swimming - perhaps they could get someone to do the poolside interviews who isn't a buddypalchum of the person they're interviewing? Then we might not get male swimmers being congratulated on coming 5th when they clearly performed badly.
I second the request below for information on 'Bones'. Any idea when it will be airing here? I think Channel Seven has the rights.

  • by tubbyk on March 21, 2006 at 08:00 PM

i would just like to say that i'm really offended that someone has not taken my opinion seriously. here i was thinking that we were allowed to waffle on as much as we like, but clearly not. i apologise if i've offended anyone, particularly tribal mind. i think i'll go and join an actual fan website and i suggest that all prison break fans do the same, to avoid such accusatory comments.

Tribal Mind replies: Readers ARE allowed to waffle on as much as they like (subject to the law, of course). No opinions are suppressed. And anybody is also free to raise doubts and questions.

  • by erika on March 21, 2006 at 08:05 PM

hmm, the stentch of paid for posters seems to fill the air...
actually, i'm convinced, might watch prison break now! because, of course, tess, jenna, andrea, mel, fiona, cassie, helena, annabelle, sahrina, margii, kathryn, alexandra, rebekah, abby slater, erika all watch it. i've been keeping count...
maybe i'm just severely outside the target demographic, maybe i'm just to cynical. how about you try australian story for a change?

  • by Michael on March 21, 2006 at 10:44 PM

Prison Break?
What a load of codswallop!
I saw a promo for it last night - the two brothers - which is supposed to be the hottie?
Neither as far as I'm concerned. Yuk.
Now a real hottie is David Boreanaz - I'm looking for Bones to be scheduled too.
Sal
P.S. Is channel 9 still on the air? Haven't bothered checking for a week or so.

  • by Sal on March 22, 2006 at 12:23 AM

Um... I'm sorry... are there some games on TV. I must have missed the promos.

  • by ChesterTheBear on March 22, 2006 at 08:33 AM

Thank goodness the swimming is over. I might actually start watching the games in earnest now. No more Ray Warren and his over-the-top commentary. No more swimming HEATS!! Daryl Eastlake is actually entertaining compared to Rabs.

  • by teresa on March 22, 2006 at 09:42 AM

The c'wealth games are as meaningless as the cricket.
Relentlessly patting ourselves on the back at our overacheiving against nations who don't take it anywhere near as seriously as we do. We have little man syndrome as a country.
Plus it's a whole bunch of sports I couldn't give a toss about, except freestyle swimming events. But the competition here is not what it would be at the world champs or olympics.

  • by tim on March 22, 2006 at 09:57 AM

Are there any males that watch Prison Break? It seems that totally implausable situations are ok as long as the lead actor is "HOT". What if Wentworth Miller looked like say, Kochie. I'd like to see the comments then. There, that should set the cat amongst the pidgeons

  • by Rob Brollo on March 22, 2006 at 10:58 AM

Hi Everybody!
Saw yesterday that Ten have picked up the rights to the Fox (in the USA) output for the next two years.
As the Simpsons is a Fox product that implies that Ten bought it off another network here in Aus. Any ideas who it was David?
Secondly, Prison Break is weak, go and rent/buy/download/ Oz. The whole concept of PB sounds like chick porn; hot guy in prison....
Plus it seems that only broads like it; like the Channel 7 girls below......

  • by miso_kool on March 22, 2006 at 11:01 AM

As per yesterdays post, Nines news beat Sevens but then they lost 500,000 viewers when A Current Affair came on.
David, do you have any figures on how many people Nine loses from News to ACA this year compared to last year. That is, is Tracey Grimshaw turning more people away or bringing a few news ones?

TribalMind replies: I'll look at that trend when the Comm Games are over.

  • by Tracker on March 22, 2006 at 11:51 AM

To Dean H pulling people up for typing errors on a blog site is really, really, really pathetic!!Does it make you feel superior to do this?Be like water dude ,flow, oops I guess using the word dude is improper vernacular. You tell him Tribal Mind, well done the guys a goose.

  • by CHAPLIN on March 22, 2006 at 12:23 PM

Tribal Mind,
I like your idea for a new TV show. The pity is that your show would probably rate! I have another idea for a show called The Producers. A "hot" looking Producer tries to pitch a show at a network. Feel his pain as he bangs his head on a brick wall before meeting with the Network Execs, just to dumb down to their level. Marvel at the ineptitude of the Network Execs as they shelve the show. Laugh, when half way through the year, with flagging ratings from their cheap bulk USA & UK shows they are forced to duck for cover and start finger pointing. Cheer as a few Execs "move on". Be moved when they remember the original show he pitched and start the scramble to get it.
If Grundy read this blog, it's my idea remember. You have to change it by 10% to make it your idea.
What do you think Tribal Mind? Are the people ready for such a "fantasy" show?

  • by chrysalis on March 22, 2006 at 12:26 PM

couldnt agree more, Tim

  • by Chris on March 22, 2006 at 12:30 PM

Good point David S.Nine like all commercial stations underestimate the intelligence of the audience.Jingoism is the perfect word to describe the commentary.By the looks of the comments we're not the only ones who feel embarrassed and ashamed of the coverage,Eastlake,Warren,Sutcliffe, the two drips that come on at the start i still don't know what they are supposed to be doing, making us sick a friend of mine suggests.

  • by Antmiester on March 22, 2006 at 12:36 PM

TubbyK posted - "At last, a place to vent about the Commonwealth Games commentary. I couldn't agree more. The Channel 9 broadcast of the games is pathetic, embarrassing to anyone interested in a fair and unbiased broadcast of sport, and smacks of racism. The medal presentations... ha! If an Aussie didn't win gold all that's generally shown is the Aussie receiving their medal. What about the other incredibly talented sportspeople standing at the dias? What? No names given? Why? Not Australian? Does that make them a lower form of life channel 9? It certainly seems so. And has anyone noticed that if a non-Australian breaks a world record there's an element of 'oh, look at the freak, they're almost good enough to be an Australian' attitude in the commentators? Someone at 9 really needs to tell the commentators to get a grip on reality. It's the Commonwealth Games, not the Australian Games. (Now it's the 'I'll not watch it again on 9' games.) I think it's time for me to change the channel programming on my tv and remove 9 altogether.

  • by Kaz on March 22, 2006 at 01:21 PM

I'm beginning to subscribe to the idea that all these chicky babes posting on here that "Prison Break is so kewl and liek Wentworth Miller is soooooo hot OMG LOL!!11!11" is a viral campaign by Channel 7. It's amazing how the writing style of these posters is very similar. Lower case, female names.
I've never watched the show so am unable to offer a critique of PB itself, however it's amazing how WM is being pimped e.g. the "Special" Ghost Whisperer episode last Sunday, Dinotopia last week. The channels are really targetting the WM fangirlies!
I suggest that anyone who proclaims WM is really hot is channelling Paris Hilton.

  • by Bereft Skerrick on March 22, 2006 at 01:22 PM

Channel 9 news Melbourne / 6:00 pm ? Com games, 6:11pm first ad break, 6:13 pm Cyclone Larry, 6:15..next story.
?Cyclone Larry, one of the biggest cyclones to hit Australia, smashed into the region on Monday morning. The category-five cyclone caused up to $1 billion damage to homes, businesses and vital infrastructure and wiped out almost all of Australia's banana crop.? The Age

  • by ggf on March 22, 2006 at 01:51 PM

two points: firstly to tim at March 22, 2006 09:57 AM - Amen to that, you must have read my mind!
Secondly, I have read heaps of comments about Prisonbreak, as yet I haven't found one that says it's a well written well acted piece of television. All I aver see is what a peice of eye-candy Wentworth Falls or Wentworth Hotel or whatever his name is!

  • by willow tree on March 22, 2006 at 01:55 PM

Hi Tribal Mind,
Can you tell me how Sunrise rated compared to today yesterday, Many Thanks

Tribal Mind replies: On Tuesday Sunrise got 436,000 across the mainalnd capitals, and Today got 203,000.

Good to see Channel 7 flogging nine though. yet another reason to want the c'wealth games to finish!

  • by Herman8 on March 22, 2006 at 03:00 PM

As far as Today vs. Sunrise goes, i would watch Sunrise more if they got rid of the Kochhead and Mel. They are so condescending.
Both shows could do with shortening the weather segments. The weather goes longer than the news.
I'm glad 10 has started putting on news at 6:30am to 7am. It's much more entertaining.

  • by dan on March 22, 2006 at 03:11 PM

Hello David,
Can you tell me if a brand new episode of the Simpsons rates much higher than a repeat?

Tribal Mind replies: A bit higher, but it doesn't seem to make much difference. In an earlier column, I discussed how Simpsons episodes are designed to be seen at least five times.

  • by Mike on March 22, 2006 at 03:12 PM

  • by Annabelle on March 22, 2006 at 03:50 PM

Nice idea on Swiming With The Stars but we can report that we've already been there. We had celebrities swim-off against Ian Thorpe in some relay races in primetime and raised money for Thorpe's charities ...
The Race Against Thorpe was broadcast in 2003 -- delivered an average audience of 1.46 million viewers live on a Sunday night.

  • by channel seven on March 22, 2006 at 04:41 PM

omg.. jessica rowe is the most embarassing host ever, and her laugh.. Geez... she'll laugh at anything... she is just plain annoying. I'll watch Sunrise over the Today show anytime, as it feels more warm and likeable, unlike the Today show. Also, does anyone agree with me that A Current Affair is trying too hard to beat Today Tonight? Tracey Grimshaw just doesnt captivate viewers like Naomi Robinson.. No wonder CH7 killing CH9 in the news hour.

  • by Jason on March 22, 2006 at 04:47 PM

I guess the question of whether other networks besides Ten monitor this blog has been answered. And the suggestion of a "Wentworth Miller is hot" internet campaign is strating to look more credible.
Its a very clever promotional tool, all power to Channel 7 if they are behind it. Its smart and fresh, two concepts that recent ratings would suggest are lacking at 9.

  • by JAK on March 22, 2006 at 05:05 PM

  • by karen on March 22, 2006 at 05:50 PM

My biggest lament? The premature cancellation of Veronica Mars which is now in its second season in the US. The resolution to the "Who Killed Lilly Kane" mystery is a real shocker.
I am a teenage girl and yes, Wentworth Miller isn't all that bad-looking but I have to protest. I actually enjoy Prison Break. Of course this is all personal taste but at least I'm not watching the OC.

  • by Victoria on March 22, 2006 at 06:02 PM

for all people said about some entries sounding 'suspiciously similiar', i think you should go and see some fansites. most of the entries on there sound even more similar than this. the thing is people probably didn't want to go on a fansite, becasue they thought well we can just express our views here. i think after everyone started bantering those poor fans, they got driven away to fansites, so i think we should all stop throwing round accusations and do what we cam on this blog to do and rave and rant as much as we want

I agree that the Channel 9 commentary has been woeful. What about Eastlakes comment after the lady won the weighlifting event "Boy she has a great snatch" obviously thinking people would think that he was refering to the snatch & jerk event in the weighlifting - well Mr Eastlake she may have a great snatch but you win the Gold for the Jerk part.
If his comment wasn't intended to be a low sexist remark I'll give away my first born.

  • by Macca on March 22, 2006 at 07:26 PM

Watching nein's coverage of these games has made me realise just how well 7 do big sport. Who's decision was it to stuff Leila down our throats? The woman is as dry as nuns (insert imaginative expletive here)!!! Disgraceful commentary headlines by Eastlakes chauveninst pig remark of "She has a great snatch" refering to a female weighlifter. Shame nein, Shame

The other allegedly "hot" guy in PB was just in a guest role on House during the last hour (it was a repeat), seems strange that his appearance wasn't so much made public by the Ch7 PB Publicity Fangirlies.
And what a conincidence! PB was actually on at the same time with a new episode? Surprise surprise.
There's a difference between being obsessed with a show and being a network plant directing comments on a blog in a +ive direction.
I hear Ch9 is starting a carrier pigeon campaign for Bert's Family Feud.

I think someone has already combined swimming with dancing and its called synchronize swimming. Seriously, knowing the state of the current viewing audience, your proposed show would rate brilliantly.
On the games, the state of commentary has been dreadful, i think we are starting to push this nationalism button, a little too far. I remember the 84 Olympics, when 10 took the American coverage, and everyone whinge about that, especially hearing the Yankee anthem for the 100th time. I think 7 have handled the last two Olympics, a lot better than 9 has this Commonwealth games. I was particulary disappointed at the coverage after the Kenyan won the 5000m and how 9 crapped on about Mottram, without once going to the Kenyan for an interview or anything.
Also, thanks to ABC-TV for showing Ahead of the class on sunday night, best show of 2005 so far.
For the record - our family watches Prison Break -thats one male, one female and two teenage sons. Its not a chick show by any stretch of the imagination .

I can say all morning tv shows are just plain crap. I do like their content however. Today show is trying too hard to beat Sunrise and Today show's new host Miss square head is too over the top and loud. That 9am show on ch 10 with the male presenter is a loud mouth loser and I wrote that show a complaint via email to tell them that I find him arrogant and annoying.
These channels have no idea what they're doing. We are losing to entertainment and its upsetting and annoying too us all. Bring on quality shows please.

There have been two themes that have dominated this blog recently. The first is the ongoing Prison Break fan club, which I agree looks like an organised campaign by Ch. 7, but is far more likely to be a bunch of giggly school girl friends who spend each day in the playground composing their two or three little daily efforts. I dare say it took their first three lunch breaks to come up with their nommes de plume and the next three to organise the use of lower case typing to look less organised.
The second recurring theme has been the Ch. 9 performance at the Games. Without wishing to state the obvious, they are an Australian broadcaster showing the games to Australia, so it is hardly outrageous that they would have a bent towards events in which Australians are performing well, or in showing Australians getting medals. Whilst it might be cute to see another countries athletes being presented with their medals, would it have mass appeal in Australia? Only for those curious to hear the national song of Gurnsey or Sri Lanka I would suggest. I would like to think that 9 is however filming the other awards ceremonies and allowing the other International broadcasters the opportunity to select the bits they want to show in their own country, including their athletes being presented with Gold, Silver or Bronze. Similarly it seems incongruous to me that in an International Sports meet anyone would accuse the home team commentators of being biased or parochial. For goodness sake THAT is the appeal of an International competition, YOUR country against the rest. THAT is why the ratings climb. It is not just to see some unknown individual doing well, most people want to wallow in the glory of their own achievement and in the event that they don't personally take part, then this translates to the reflected glory of their children, or their family, or their city, or their country. There would have been more justification of the criticism if 9 had not been biased and parochial - THEN they would have been unaustralian.
Finally, I do hope DeanH gives me at least a 7 out of 10 for typing accuracy and perhaps a 6 for grammar and spelling. It is SO important to me to know he approves!

Good to see that "the Simpsons" is going strong as always. Investing in the simpsons is the only thing channel 10 ha
