Ratings update 10 am Friday March 10:
Today we hear that Nine boss Eddie McGuire has accepted the resignation of Sandra Levy as head of program development for Nine. Is he creating a space for Bert? And if so, what kind of programs would Bert create?
Bert's Family Feud achieved a record low of 438,000 at 5.30pm yesterday. Thursday is now Bert Newton's worst day, possibly because that's when his most loyal followers go late night grocery shopping (unless they are expressing their irritation at the promo which makes BFF look like The Jerry Springer Show).
The problem for Nine is how to terminate BFF without causing distress to an ageing icon. The option we reported yesterday - extended sick leave - would be too implausible. Can you help? Send us your suggestions, below, on the best way for Bert to exit gracefully, and we'll pass them on to Eddie McGuire.
Meanwhile, Seven's Lost seems to be in recovery mode. Last week this column noted that half a million viewers had vanished on Thursday nights since it launched (with 2.1 million), but last night the audience was back up to 1.67 million. It only needed a bit of hot groping (between Sayid and Shannon) for the fans to start finding it again.
Seven won the night with a prime time audience share of 33.8 per cent, with Nine on 25.0, Ten on 23.3, ABC on 12.7 and SBS on 5.2.
Ten is delighted that The Biggest Loser seems to have settled on an audience of 1.1 million at 7pm, ready to hand over a bunch of under-40 viewers to 'Big Brother' after Easter. Seven is pleased that its "cult" cartoon shows are performing in their late night slots. American Dad managed 565,000 at 10.30pm and Family Guy managed 422,000 at 11pm - numbers any pay TV station would kill for (Fox 8 celebrates when The Simpsons get 80,000.) But 9.30pm seems too late for ABC viewers: The West Wing managed only 389,000 last night.

Michael Scofield was smart to rescue the doctor from rape and murder last night, even if it did endanger his escape plan. Not only did he encourage her to fall in love with him, but he boosted the audience for 'Prison Break' well above its rival, 'House', which had beaten it last week. Or perhaps House's fans were driven away by that unfortunate diarrhoea incident.
Seven continued its run of good luck, winning the night with 28.8 per cent of the prime time audience, while NIne was on 26.7, Ten on 24.9, ABC on 15.0 and SBS on 4.6.
Ten was not depressed by the descent of 'House', because after 'Prison Break', the next six top programs with the 16-39 age group all belonged to Ten: 'House', 'The Biggest Loser', 'Bondi Rescue', 'NCIS', 'Jamie's Italian Adventure' and 'Neighbours'.
'Bert's Family Feud' continues to languish below 500,000 viewers at 5.30pm, encouraging much conspiracy theorising about how Nine will kill the show without embarrassing Bert Newton. The latest theory, as discussed in Amanda Meade's column in 'The Australian' today, is that Bert will have some kind of "health scare" during the Commonwealth Games, preventing him from returning to Family Feud when the Games are over. But the published speculation may force Nine to think of another (less kind) approach.

Dance fever grips the nation. Last night 2.2 million people in the mainland capitals settled into a two-hour warm bath of schmaltz, glitz, and cheese, plus a splash of heartbreak (at least for footballer Luke Ricketson, who was voted off by viewers). Season four of 'Dancing With The Stars' is the most successful season so far.
Those who find the glitter too glary are seeking refuge in Springfield and in the year 3000 -- 'The Simpsons' and 'Futurama' do particularly well on Tuesday nights.Channel Seven won the night with a prime time audience share of 38.3 per cent, with Nine on 23.6 per cent, Ten on 20.9, The ABC on 12.6 and SBS on 4.7.
And still Nine is not revealing its programming fightback plans for after the Commonwealth Games (which are themselves looking less like ratings-grabbers now Thorpie has dropped out).

In the middle of last year, about 200,000 Australians went to see 'Crash' at the cinema. Last night, five times as many Australians in the mainland capitals saw 'Crash' win an Academy Award as the Best Picture of 2005.
An average audience of 1.1 million over the three and a half hours of Oscar presentations was a tremendous result, but it didn't allow NIne to win the night. Channel Seven's hit show 'Desperate Housewives' barely blinked (suggesting that many viewers were channel-hopping during the ads). At 9.30, 'Commander in Chief' lost 400,000 of its viewers from the opening week -- not entirely to the Oscars, since 'Supernatural' on Ten rose from 657,000 last week to 812,000 last night.
Seven managed a prime time audience share of 32.2 per cent, to Nine's 28.4, Ten's 19.9, the ABC's 13.1 and SBS's healthy 6.4 per cent (largely due to 'Mythbusters', which pulled 544,000 viewers away from the Oscars).

All this year, Sunday night has been Channel Nine's oasis in the ratings desert that is the rest of the week, because Nine could always rely on '60 Minutes' and 'CSI' to keep its audiences up. But the oasis got smaller last night, as both Sunday stalwarts managed the (for them) modest figure of 1.4 million viewers in the mainland capitals.
Seven's 'Ghost Whisperer', newly moved to Sundays, took some viewers from '60 Minutes', while growing support for the ABC's Belgian detective Poirot meant diminishing returns for Nine's Las Vegas detectives.
Ten put out a release this morning expressing delight with the ratings for its new sitcom 'Everybody Hates Chris', which had been a big hit in America. An Australian audience size of 859,000 doesn't sound too impressive, but Ten points out that the childhood of Chris Rock provided the most popular program at 7pm with viewers aged 16-39, who are Ten's prime target. Perhaps the show's title should be 'Everybody Over 40 Hates Chris'.
After poor results for 'Courting Alex' on Mondays, the networks have been wondering if the very word "sitcom" has become a TV turnoff, rather like "Australian drama". A bad result for Chris would have discouraged Seven from showing its new sitcom, 'My Name Is Earl', any time soon. The test is how well the show holds up next week. We'd like to hear what you made of 'Everybody Hates Chris', below.
Nine won the night with a prime time audience share of 28.8 per cent, closely followed by Seven on 27.9, Ten on 20.7, ABC on 18.9 and SBS on 3.7.

The way it went last week
A few tiny wounds are starting to appear on Channel Seven's apparently invincible army of new programs -- but they weren't inflicted by Channel Nine.
Half a million viewers have left 'Lost' since its opening night, and the new season of the Australian medical drama 'All Saints' opened with only 1.2 million, apparently because the episode had to start late when 'Dancing With The Stars' ran overtime (what you might call "friendly fire"). 'Prison Break', which launched with 1.9 million viewers, has now dropped back to 1.4 m, and was beaten last Wednesday night by Ten's 'House'.
But Seven is feeling no pain, because its latest reinforcements are making up for these weaknesses -- the nostalgiafest 'Where Are They Now' drew 1.5 million on Sunday and the American political soap 'Commander-in-Chief' drew 1.7 million on Monday.
Seven won the week with a prime time audience share of 31.5 per cent, followed by Nine on 26.6, Ten on 21.4, ABC on 15.6 and SBS on 4.9. That means Seven averaged 1.1 million viewers in prime time over the week, while Nine averaged 930,000.
Seven described this as its "most comprehensive non-Olympic victory since the introduction of peoplemeters" (1991).
The most watched show was Dancing With The Stars, with 2.2 million. Nine's top performers were CSI (1.5 million) and McLeod's Daughters (1.4 m). Ten did best with House (1.4m) and an elimination episode of The Biggest Loser (1.3m).
The ABC's hits were Life In The Undergrowth and Poirot (both 1.1m) and SBS celebrated Mythbusters (633,000).

Hi David,
Really enjoy regarding all these comments...makes the mind boggle as to why the stations act as they do when it turns viewers off. Oh well.
I'd be interested to know how the Today Show with its new laughing hyena is going against Sunrise.
Unfortunately for the ABC, I think that most fans of the West Wing have already watched the season being aired. ABC are starting with season 4, but S4 & S5 have been released on DVD. Fans who don't download are waiting for seasons 6 & 7.
I loved the sunday night movie on last night. It won me over watching depressive CSI and Law and Order.
One of life's little pleasures is to meander through the TV guide on Saturday morning and work out what the next week's viewing is probably going to be. As each year flashes past, less and less "must see" programs turn up. Anything - anything at all - on commercial TV now gets recorded, ever since more and more ads got imposed on us. Yes, I know that's how they make their money, but we are not all morons happy to sit through 6 or 7 consecutive ads.
Full marks to 'Poirot', Sunday nights on the ABC, and if you want really edgy police drama and haven't yet come across 'Unit One' on SBS, Friday evenings, take a look. Although that will probably mean recording it too for all you younger folk out on Fridays and spending your hard earned dollars in order to be kissed by the alcohol fairy.
Thanks to the SMH, I just discovered that Boston Legal is back on 7 tonight at 10.35pm. I think this show is one of the best things around, but tucking it away near bedtime will do nothing for its ratings (although I'll be recording it out of principle).
It will be very interesting to see if 7 jerk it around in various timeslots and then lament that not enough folk are watching it.
Rant over !
The poor result of Everybody Hates Chris could have something to do with the fact that many viewers will have seen the debut episode on the Ten DVD distributed with the major Sunday newspapers a month or so ago. At the time I thought this was a good piece of marketing, but in hindsight the distribution of this DVD may have hamed the forst night result.
I watched Everybody hates Chris, and found it funny - but not a must see every week. I don't think it was really a sunday night type of show, but still good for a few laughs instead of mindless boredom of whatever else was on. But also probably the most annoying thing i found about EHC was Chris Rocks nasal narration
I used to watch Today with Steve/Tracey. Now, with Nine copying Seven, I turn to 10. It is fine if you want a short 15 min review (repetitive) of the morning news, succint with no hype-up silly blondes, laughing hyena, love-himself to death male presenter or no-charisma male host.
Everybody Hates Chris - includes me. Not interested in a Wonder Years type show but with folks from the ghetto. Nothing in common with them and I much prefer Chris Rock as a stand up comedian or actor. Never liked Wonder Years either.
Courting Alex - boring. She's just Dharma in a suit and if she turned down the perkiness factor, maybe she wouldn't be so annoying. I will give My Name Is Earl a go, because I really like Jason Lee.
I'm sick of the stations putting my fave shows on at competing times. I love the Law and Order and CSI franchises, but if they conflict, then Law and Order wins, especially when Goren is on. And I didn't even realise that Ghost Whisperer had changed nights. It's getting confusing to the point where I'm ready to even give up on my fave shows because they get switched around so much.
And of the morning shows, Sunrise is only marginally less annoying that those snapper heads on Channel 9. But I usually only watch Sunrise on the fly for about half an hour before I'm out the door. How to make it better? Put more hard hitting topics for discussion by the heads and cut out that awful viewer's joke segment. I don't know who decides which joke will be aired, but they're taste is questionable to say the least.
I downloaded a bunch of 'I hate chris' and yes it's v. good. I'm 42 so not sure about broadcasters demographic. Rock is late 30's .. New Jack City was a long time ago.
This is one of the worst tv shows I have ever seen.
To mention that the storylines are banal (eating Dad's 'big' piece of chicken, cleaning dirty new shoes, bus pass being stolen - come on, give me a break!), the acting ranges from OTT to pathetic and the 'white folks have it easy, black folks do it tough' message is sledgehammered home at every opportunity is to name but three of the many problems with this extremely unfunny 'comedy'. Sort of like a Wonder Years without any of the charm.
I would give it 1 out of 10 and hope that it continues to rate poorly, so it can be replaced with repeats of Seinfeld or something.
Oh, and I am 24 - clearly within the target market for this steaming pile of rubbish.
Everybody hates Chris... With such a build up to the show, it was a very big let down. Just hope it gets better NEXT sunday - Oh yeah, another thing, for a half hour show that doesn't show much, a 7day break IS quite a long time... What happened last night? He went to school, came home, sent his Dad to work. Correction there's NOT enough to keep me interested for a 7 day break!!
Come on, Chris!
Look I like EHC. My kids like the school boodecause they love Greg. He is a kid every child knows in the chilhood. Keep him
I'm boycotting Ten for having scrapped Veronica Mars, which had really clever dialogue and good casting. After a shift from Monday night to Friday night (not great anyway), they've now replaced it with the truly dire Friday Night Games, which, although I haven't watched it, screams 'lousy TV'. I'm 33 and Ten clearly doesn't want my demographic if they're putting on this sort of rubbish.
'Everybody Hates Chris' - is an interesting idea and has funny lines plus some scenes of genuine affection. The scene in ep1 when his father says goodnight has stayed with me.
The 'overacting' some people complain about I saw as deliberate to reflect the perceptions of a child and the memory of childhood. It's from Chris's POV not a documentary.
The real problem with EHC in Australia is that it lacks resonance with a mostly white audience on the other side of the world. For black Americans (or those more familiar with US life) EHC would have more appeal.
It's a good show and doesn't deserve the slagging it's getting. EHC is just out of place to an Aussie audience IMHO.
Just what Australia needs.
More American influenced "culture" to rot the minds of couch potatoes.
African/Americans are always doing it tough, kept down by the "white man" I'm sure. That is the carefully crafted subliminal message of these type of shows. I find it offensive.
Australian commercial television is mostly American rubbish.
If you want to be entertained, I suggest watching Parliament Question time on the ABC.
Forget TV (bar Shameless), it's Deadwood - Season 2 on DVD time!
i think gwenda sucks and chris rock rocks
At least its not that american seinfield wannabe half assed try hard who only aims at over 40's. Its good to see an effort being put into younger viewers. And just remember, you were young once.
Everybody hates chris is a great show but it won't work in Australia as its humour is too american.
Channel 7 is stupid to delay earl, its great but i'm sure they'll find a way to stuff it up - it should be on channel 10.
Thankfully i am up to episodes 16-17 of the shows above.
I'm loving Poirot at the moment. Not sure why, other than great cast, costumes, plus I never guess whodunnit.
I had "Everybody hates Chirs" on in the background, while doing other things. nothing made me want to turn the sound up. I like black stand up but when they do sitcoms they are as unfunny as "Hey Dad!".
I couldnt be bothered watching it again, like most shows on. Watch them once and never again
I enjoyed the Chris Rock show, I find his stand up act can be a bit confronting at times, but this stuff puts me in mind of the early Eddie Murphy routine ('Raw') which was just brilliant. I think the show does have some charm, but he is definitely an acquired taste and I can see how some may not find his stuff quite so amusing, particularly as this was clearly written with an American audience in mind. Nevertheless, it craps all over the endless stream of inane cop shows which we are force fed on commercial television.
I enjoyed Everybody Hates Chris. It reminded me a lot about my childhood. It is too bad that it won't get the support from the Australian public. Then again Aussie's don?t know the humour of growing up in a American inner city neighbourhood (ghetto). Just like Americans would not know about the drama of a family of women living in the Australian countryside. Though I am glad that channel ten tried. I guess I will catch it on DVD when it is cut.
WELL...bloody tv critics you people always have a lame sense of humour and to criticise chris rock's new show...when did you ever get near 900,000 people watching what you do? NEVER!!! go outside sometime and realise that 'life' begins when you turn off your computer. morons
How long before 'Clever' gets the axe? With Nine's recent history of dredging up shows from the past, this looks like The Curiosity Show meets lame game show. Awful!!
BTW, Chris Rock turned 40 late last year.
Seeing as Nine realise the importance of the 5.30pm timeslot leading viewers into the 6pm news, how come they don't then apply the same principles to the 5pm timeslot? Antiques Roadshow? Are they kidding themselves?
Also - Magda's Funny Bits is AWFUL. Should be replaced pronto.
Seven know how to promote their shows - their previews explain story and point of shows, whereas on Ten in particular, I havn't seen Supernatural or Numbers yet, yet their promo doesn't explain the premise or point, just the story for that episode. Therefore, I don't believe they will attract new viewers yet to sample these shows.
Boston Legal is back on tonight on Seven at 10.30. Can't wait for it! But why does Seven have to put it on so late? They have really neglected this great series. It is much better than CIC. I'm sure Boston Legal would rate if it had a lead such as Housewives.
I empathise with your parenthesis Hannah.
I note that you put Scrubs ratings on from last week (thanks for that), and they weren't half bad for a show at 11.30 at night.
Does that factor in those of us who taped it?
It's not really a case of disliking sit-coms more like a case of an unoriginal idea. I just thought that 'Everybody Hates Chris' would be 'Malcolm in the Middle' or 'The Wonder Years' with black people. Seen it before, so don't really want to see it again. And I guess Aussies would relate a lot less with people from the ghetto than they would with middle class families.
I thought everybody hate's chris was a pretty good show.
I can see it developing into a funny regular show.
As with most sitcoms they are always a little tight and stiff at first but once the actors are settled and they develope the character it all flows.
So with that said i look forward to watching this sundays "everybody hates chris"
And as for ten showing it on a sunday i think that is a smart move not everyone likes to watch serious shows some of us like to sit back and relaxe.
I rate this episode a 8/10
Give me something Australian to watch & I might bother switching the TV on.
American TV shows suck - period.
Everybody Hates Chris is one of my new favorite shows. it is absolutely hilarious and it worth atleast 9/10. i think you need to appreciate Chris Rock as a person first before you can appreciate the sitcom of is childhood (with a little comedy added)
I'm a 32-year old professional. Of the circle of friends I see on a weekly basis -- so let's say maybe twenty people -- I think there are three or four who who actually watch free-to-air television.
Does anyone at the networks actually realise that the people who are their target audience NO LONGER GIVE A SH*T WHAT IS ON TELEVISION?
My comments are going to catch flack for sure but the reason why so many people don't find "Everybody Hates Chris" funny is because they weren't raised that way and more likely than not aren't black or of any other ethnicity or they don't have ethnic friends who have told them stories of their childhood.
Being raised in a poor black family from the "ghetto" (according to "Killer Bees". BTW you should consider yourself lucky that your childhood experiences were far safer (banal) and more lilly white than others).
I can totally relate to everthing he said including the "big piece of chicken", in my house it was the pork chop, and the often creative (but never boring) ways my mother would dream up to punish her four unruly kids. It brings back some teriffic memories from my childhood that I hadn't reflected on because I'm not near my family.
I'm not saying that you have to be black to get the show. My husband's unbelievably white and he totally relates to the show because his parents are insane and he wasn't from the most affluent family.
I love Chris Rock's comedy, always have and I'm really sorry that this show has been brought to a country where it's not going to be appreciated at all. I'm not expecting that everyone is going to love the show but I totally didn't expect to see the sorts of comments I've seen.
For those of you who do understand it more power to you and for those of you who had un-funny childhoods I'm sorry for you.
I am an australian citizen who cannot abide any longer the american trash we need to endure. i love television, yet i can't watch any more legal, police, medical american drama any longer. ill give u a hint australian networks, to get viewers you need not to mess around with the timeslots. you are wondering were is every one going, you need to understand that they are turning on their dvd players. remember the rating system is a load of rubbish. there is supposedly 1000 of these rating boxes situated in the suburbs dictating what the viewer wants to watch. personally i don't watch what they watch. i want more australian drama, less reality and definitely less games shows. how much more does the average punter have to endure to receive this? bert newton did better work on a weekday morning than he does hosting a tired old genre, and the only reason deal or no deal is successful is because seven haven't played with its timeslot enough or not yet....come on australian networks create something new and different and place aside the drivel that you are producing, at least fox is investing in more quality programming than you are......
I did like the chris rock show, i was expecting it to be better, i will tune in next week to see if it has improved. I personally loved Wonder Years, Chris Rocks version i love for the great music that they have on it! Maybe channel 10 duz work for me coz im within their age target!
Just one thing i want to say - that Jessica Rowe has to be the worst host of any show on earth. Can't bear to watch Today Show - she makes my hackles rise with that insipid thing she does with her mouth and teeth. Urrrrgh.
At least it isn't another crime show! What is it with the popularity of crime shows? I don't get it. Maybe because I have half a brain and can see through the paper thin storylines and inaccurate use of technology that the crime shows consist of?
Everybody Over 40 Hates Chris? What about Everybody in Every Demographic Hates Friday Night Games?
My Name is Earl wont work in Australia.
It is clever, quirky and does not have a laugh track.
Would appeal to those who liked arrested development, and we know how many of those there are.
I hate sitcoms! Is LOST one?
It often seems like it. I'm sure that they make up the plot and dialogue as they go along.
What I would like to know is what happened to SURFACE, which had quite a good plot, and THRESHOLD, which was a bit silly, but rather intriguing. They both seem to have disappeared without warning.
The only good thing on at the moment in my opinion, is POIROT.
I've seen a dozen or so eps of EHC from the internet - I'm kind of surprised that people fixate on the black/white thing. I hadn't even thought about it. It's a funny show, Chris's dad is hilarious.
Sure, the show often covers racial sterotypes & prejudices, but the show doesn't attempt to preach about it, it's just the way it was back then, and probably still is.
If anyone thinks this show has a racial agenda, that probably reveals more about them than the TV program.
Who cares what channel a show is on? Or even when it's on or how many people watch it? Surely that is what a broadband internet connection is for?
I dont have an ethical problem with not compensating the producers or distributers as long as someone is dumb enough to watch thier commercials for me.
The new show on ten "Every body hates chris" is good and after a few weeks i think it will start to recieve more viewers.
everybody hates chris seems like a funny comedy series so f u all u shitheds
Traction - woohoo!
I just searched this blog fo the wor American and found, to my surprise, that I'm not the only person in Australia who hates American TV and it's creeping infection of our culture.
Please Please Please Australian TV channel bosses, wake up, look around and be bold - start supporting, producing and SHOWING Australian content - preferably of a cultural content, not some airy fairy reality or game show.
ADVERTISERS: We buy things. We con't watch your ads because they're on during crappy American shows.
I download lots of tv shows from the usa, everbody hates chris is one of them, but i dont think its going to work in australia. some people will watch it but it wont be as sucessful as they hope.
I watched clever last night only coz nothing else was on and i liked laughing at it, alot like brianiac, just get over it 7,9 and 10 you missed out on mythbusters dont try and mimic the subject matter its not going to work, the guest you have on clever are dumbarses its pretty obvious to work out what the answer is going to be. At least beyond tomorrow (what are the raitings of that? i really like it) has some sense and get clips of mythbusters, sure its not the same but its as close as they can come, i even rewatch them even know i download all mythbusters episodes.
Top gear is another great show and i think sbs should have it on after mythbusters or on another night (aslong as its not wednesday)
I think most tv stations just dont get what public want to see, they have all these great shows (the sopranos, scrubs, arrested dvelopment, american dad, family guy, curb your enthusiasm, that 70s show) and they put them on during off season or late at night, i think if they advertised them well enough they could have a week of pretty decent raitings if they put them on at a normal time, pretty much anything is better than the crap we currently have, i think that is why ehc rated coz nothing else was on!!
I think that today, everyboady has an little bit of american in them. If you people are so worried about 'Americanisim' the couch potatoes are to lazy they only have crawl to the old post-an-opion on this website! I say if you do not want American shows on public TV than do not wach them. Boycott them. once there is a decline in numbers, the 'big bosses' will have to do somthing.
the problem with everybody hates chris airing in australia, is the inability of the average middle class white australian person to relate to anything in the show. its not their fault either, they where brought up in a different culture. being a black person myself, i totally relate to dad eating the big piece of chicken. Of course living in a middle class family i dont 'have my bus pass stolen' or go to an 'all white school', but i still am able to relate to alot of what chris rock portrays in his show. hence i find it funny and clever, while i find a show like mcleods daughters or all saints utterly boring. but that doesnt mean that those shows sucks, just means i dont have the cultural knowledge to allow me to understand the shows.
interestingly, many ppl in brooklyn, where chris rock grew up, have complained about his portrayal of the area - saying that he is embellishing the whole 'blacks vs whites' thing. so its not just aussies that have differing views on the show.
Anyone who lived in the States will have noticed the vibrancy of American TV dramas. This is due to the multicultural mix of American society that constantly generates fresh and exciting ideas that ultimately find its way to American TV. America is a land of immigrants and US industries, including its entertainment industry, tap into this diversity to produce products and services that are relevant to consumers. Look at US TV shows and you find Anglo European, Black, Hispanic, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Filipino, Vietnamese, and other ethnic groups represented as actors, actresses, scriptwriters, newscasters etc. How does Australian TV compare? Australian demographics is changing brought about by immigration and it must tap into this diversity to inject fresh ideas for domestic TV dramas.
America’s big corporations have diversity committees represented by ethnic groups whose function is to study business strategies within the context of the various cultures where it operates. Australian businesses must adopt an internationalist mindset and attract and involve talents from the immigrant community to successfully compete with the Americans. The Australian media, including TV drama production, will be a good start.
I liked it. If you don't like it too I will knock the caps off your knees!
Everybody Hates Chris is fantastic. I can't see why it won't work in Australia. And having seen all of the My name is earl episodes, I think that show is going to go down well in Australia as well.
Hopefully the networks don't despatch these shows to the late night as per usual.
Oh, I almost had mistaken this add for one of those world vision scams.
I dont think I will be wasting my time watching yet another monkey jump around my TV screen.
When is a show going to be aired with some good old fashion Klans men? Now that would be interesting.
I agree with Esmarelda Ran about the ads, but she left out one thing - more than half the ads are now American ones, smartened with a new voice over. Worst still some of them don't even change the American accent - and these are mostly directed at the kids. BASTARDS! - Damned if I'll ever buy their products!
Frankly there should be a law against such advertising - let akone what damage it does to the kids of our country. No wonder many Aussie kids now think and talk like the rank yanks!.
We liked "everybody hates chris". My son is 19 and I'm 40. Just don't call it sitcom. It's not, there is no couch in every shot that is a focal point of all the action. And as to channel 9 tghey're getting worse and worse with Bert's performance a disaster, "clever" beyond watchability, Jessica Rowe should stay reading news as she has no presenter personality to handle morning TV. In all Eddie is going to burry 9 for ever. I can see the day when SBS will take it over. What about the slogan "And now the lastand proud of it!"
To Eljay, no Lost is not a SITCOM, Malcolm in the Middle is a Sitcom. Situation Comedy - Sitcom.
I've spent a lot of time in downtown L.A. (Inglewood etc.) and I enjoyed EHC, at least it isn't grossly overacted the way some of the Wayons brothers shows are.
I am a frustrated West Wing watcher. I was over the moon to see that West Wing was coming onto the ABC, but they have missed their mark by reverting to a season that has already been shown on Australian TV. I fear now that poor ratings will see them drop the show in a few months, forcing fans back to DVDs or downloads. The Studio execs just don't seem to get it.. Fans will stop the illegal downloading and watch it on TV.. IF THEY'D JUST PUT IT ON !
Clever is terrible. Not good at all.
Didn't watch everyone hates chris simply because I'm done with the majority of sitcoms from US. And dramas from the US. And movies from the US.
I do, however, like The West Wing. Pity I've seen the current episodes, but I can always watch it as a refresher. And Spicks and Specks still gets me watching.
I enjoyed EHC and will watch it again. But, like many others I first watched it on DVD (free sample), therefore I tuned out on Sunday night. Thanks to new technology I can now watch the shows I want to watch at the time that suits me - DVD recorder with hard disk. Does wonders with ads too...
Everyone whinging about American tv.. when Australia produces a medical drama even a tenth as good as House I'll watch Australian content... when we produce a Crime drama half as good as the Law and Order series i'll watch.
When all we've got the throw against them is banal crap like All Saints and Blue Heelers it's little wonder most people prefer something better like stabbing themselves in the eyes with knitting needles or counting blackheads or better written and better produced tv from overseas.
So CIC lost 400,000 viewers??
Tribal Mind replies: yes, but against the Oscars. Next week will be the real test.
I was wondering if you could tell me how Boston Legal rated last night?
Tribal Mind replies: Boston Legal got 461,000 in the mainland capitals - not bad for that late at night, but not enough to encourage Seven to move it earlier
is it just me or does everyone else get a nice warm glowy feeling when Channel 7's "thanks for watching seven" promo hits the screens? !! gotta love my tv thanking me
OC is on tonight, i would love to know how it rates - my friends and most young people i kno watch it but it doesn't seem to rate from what i can see on this blog.
I love it though, good quality drama
Is it just me or does Sandra Sully lack any charisma whatsoever.. I saw most of Australia's Brainiest Radio Star and she was terrible.
I watched the promos for the show - that was enough to make me hate Chris!
RE Julie.
What else is there to watch besides US sitcoms and dramas? The Bill? How about Midsommer Murders? Clever?
There's one thing that the US does well and that is pop culture.
Best thing last night was a repeat of South Park's best episode 'Faith+1" - best laugh I've had in ages!
However, sadly the NEW episode "Bloody Mary" was what we really wanted to see. It was not shown - bowing to be censored by some idiotic Catholic campaign - who wanted the episode boycotted. I thought SBS answered appropriately with the "Faith+1" episode.
Pity SBS didn't show this episode (they did in New Zealand - with a record number of viewers.
[See article at; http://www.cbc.ca/story/arts/national/2006/02/23/boycott-southpark-ratings.html ]
If they did the would have certainly made the "Top 10" list here.
South Park viewers should also be watch Letterman next week on Tuesday Night / Wednesday Morning as both the creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker will appear on the program.
Why don't they internationally release TV shows on the same date? Or even within a month, or a reasonable time period, this way we don't read about the show before its on, or download them.
And the stations should stop self promotion it makes me physically ill.
If channel 9 wants to knock 7 off the top, especially in the lead up to the news, there is something very simple it can do. Move Bert to 5pm, and put on 'Friends' repeats at 5:30. I know so many people would prefer to watch that than a cheesy game show. Friends was a number one rating show for a long time and viewers haven't seen it for a while now - bring back Friends! Channel 10 has not killed The Simpsons by showing it consistantly at 6.....
I just have to say Prison Break is the all time gr8test show. A good original drama, and lets not forget the eye candy!
(predominantly) brain-dead population gets (predominantly) brain-dead tv.
This is appropriate, no?
Channel Nine has only one good show. Its on Sunday morning at 7am. The Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi show. My 3 year old loves it. The rest of there line up is completely bogus.
I haven't watched much "live" tv offered by the commercial stations for some time.
Why?
Because of the treatment they give to shows.
ABC, and SBS at least put things on within a reasonable release date overseas, and they do it with predictability of timeslot, so I don't have to play hide and seek for the shows I want.
Take the US shows on commercial stations:
NCIS, CSI, Boston Legal for instance.
I can get NCSI and Boston Legal via download, in hi-fi, widescreen within 24-48 hours, or I can wait for the TV station to decide wether or not it will put them on at a regular time, and how long after they have been available (and cliff hanger episodes or season enders of those shows don't get shown in Australia for months) They started it with science fiction shows, and it became easier to get, for instance, Stargate (no, I didn't, but plenty did) or the DVDs of Voyager (yes I did) than wait for the stations.
Seven decided to start showing Kingdom Hospital last year. It didn't rate. The solution, was to stop showing it (on Prime for instance), or else shuffle it around, so you could not predict when it would be shown, or else, if you had a TV guide, and you waited with anticipation or set up to tape it because it was scheduled for 1.00am, and then you find they had pulled it.
So I bought the DVDs
In general, though, we are left with crap (and I *DO* watch the aussie shows, but if it's crap, I'm not going to watch it for long.
So it became a habit to download, because I expect it now, and the technology is there.
Veronica Mars, My Name is Earl, Masters of Horror, Americasn Dad, Family Guy. etc, all the same availability- within 48 hours of broadcast.
Dead Like Me had 2 seasons in the US, years ago. We never got it. But it became a big seller on DVD. They missed out.
Now downloaders, regardless of what the media will say, is a minority.
However, they have complained that Australia is one of the major download destinations. Why don't they ask why that is so?
What the TV stations should be doing is obvious:
Go to the download sites, and see just *what* is being downloaded the most. A simple prospect, and easy to do. Then buy those shows, and show them at a decent time after overseas broadcast. Then there would be almost no reason to download them.
We know what the problem is: It's the sales cycle in the US. It's to do with revenue in the US. Selling the shows later, keeps the revenue stream constant for the stations and production houses.
Well, they need to wake up, and realise *why* people are downloading.
Mentioning the O.C. and quality drama in the same sentence? Talk about stretching the imagination. I suppose if you were around ten years ago you would have watched Beverley Hills 90210. To be honest, when they do crap tv,it's really bad but when they want to, they can come up with the best television you will ever see. Trouble is, the crap outweighs the good. As for EHC, It's ok but should be on Mon to Fri at 7.00pm till it runs it's course. It's definitely inferior to Everybody Loves Raymond but i'm Italian so i could relate to it!
I should add, that as far as Veronica Mars is concerned:
Aussie TV showed a "Season Finale" episode, which is simply *was not*, and the US is now well into season 2, about episode 18 or so.
We were shown *part* of season 1.
So what happened? You got it. Download.
You can see the same behaviour for most popular shows.
Channel 9 what on earth are you thinking? Tracey Grimshaw fronting A Current Affair? It used to be fronted by people with a bit of heart - Ray Martin, Mike Munro. Now it's got Tracey's clinical poker faced presence. I've switched to Today Tonight now since the now glammed up Naomi Robson is easier on the eyes and strikes me more as a sympathetic host.
Bert hosting a game show? Why not get Ron Casey do a running commentary of the Chinese New Year celebrations? Bert's type of humour is totally wasted.
Jessica Rowe? She has the personality of a... uh, newsreader. Her presence on the Today show seems painful to watch as if she's dying to release that contrived smile/ laughter. No competition for Cochie and the gang at Sunrise. Channel 9, why don't you try to score Megan Gale when she retires from modelling to front the Today show or ACA? For sure a lot of blokes will start turning up to work late in the morning.
What is that eerie sound? That mournful wailing and gnashing of teeth?
Could it be Ray Warren and the Nine's team of Thorpe groupies bemaoning the lost ratings points now that their poster boy is out?
Rove is the worst show EVER. i haven't heard one thing funny dribble out of his balding cranium on the unfortunate occasions i have caught a bit of the show. Apparently he earns $8m a year through his various interests - now that is a joke.
To Beavis.....
Your a complete butt-head especially when YOU are a part of this population so it seems you are (predominantly) brain-dead, (so you said yourself) As for the rest of us? I doubt it!
Whats with ch9 not showing the latest series of Survivor. I mean waiting till after the commonwealth games, thats insane. The commonwealth games doesnt sound that great to me. Its no worldcup, olympics or ashes.
Besides that Im sure avid fans are allready dl'ing the current episodes right now. Ch9 proposes that we all sit back wait for the games to finish then drudgingly sit and wait for doubles of each episode to be screened till we catchup...yawn.
Wheres the sense in all this?
When's Grey's Anatomy coming back on??? America is around halfway through season two!
Tribal Mind replies: As with last year, Seven is likely to use Grey's Anatomy to fill the 8.30 monday slot when they run out of episodes of Desperate Housewives in August.
the only show that isnt and i can say safeli is probabli the best show of the year is prison break, absoluteli awesome show. not onli dos it hav gr8 plotlines, but it also has da hot guyz. absoluteli luv lost, and hav watched it sinc last year, but hav 2 agree with everione dat it is draggin majorly.
Can people PLEASE refrain from bragging about how special they are as they watch TV via downloads. Is does not make you a better person and nobody cares.
Please, for the love of god, stop.
This is an entertainment blog regarding last nights tv ratings, NOT what shows you downloaded this week and how far advanced you are into (insert crap US tv show here).
Rant over.
Faith + 1 was, indeed, great last night.
The wife always catches The OC, can we get ratings please as per Annabelle's request below?
I will refrain from my judgement on the show as I am all ranted out.
Tribal Mind replies: Last week The OC attracted 800,000 viewers in the mainland capitals. Ten keeps showing it because most of those people are in its target under 40 audience.
I would be interested in knowing how does 9's Antique Roadshow rate at 5pm against Wheel of Fortune and Tens News.
Does any one actually watch Today Tonight, 1.3 million viewers. Come on!!!
But then again 630 is a dead timeslot in that most people are eating or cooking dinner orwalking in the door so I think that most of that 1.3million arent actually watching the tv screen, but the TV is simply just on.
The real ratings test should be, what advertisement did you remember during a given show, not how many people watched the show!! in my home and in every home of my mates as soon as the ads come on we all flick the channel and go get a feed or a beer!!
so in that case advertisers are paying for NOTHING!!!
Tribal Mind replies: Ten news at five 840,000; Wheel of Fortune 514,000; Antiques Roadshow 352,000;
Whatever happened to Top Gear? It was on over summer but now it's gone...bring it back I say!!
how does the 430 news on 7 and 9 rate against ten's the bold and the beautiful at 430pm?
there is toooo much news on during the day!! im over it.
David. I know you've addressed the ratings system before ... but reading this article I wonder again, "Why do the ratings only consider "while broadcasting viewership" and why does no-one account for time shifting recording of broadcast TV?
I saw a comment in an article suggesting that 7 should hold off on releasing "My name is Earl". Well, I am an Australian who has been living in Scotland for 5 years now and can say that My name is Earl is probably the funniest Amercican export since Cheers. It is purposely tacky and really takes the mickey out of Americans. It even has some subtle humour which we rarely see in Amercian TV. It is now standard Friday night viewing for my family. I say get it out there and watch the ratings soar!
David Dale observes that only 200,000 Aussies saw CRASH at the movies. What a pity for those that didn't bother. It is fabulous. As to Virginia Trioli's comment that the Academy voted "safely" I hardly think that the aforementioned was a "Mary Poppins"!
Daryl is not 'the conquerer' as your headline states, he is simply the 'pain in the arse' you have to put up with if you want to watch DWTS. What a boorish, self-centred waste of time - literally. If he would shut up once in a while the show would easily fit into its programme schedule and finish on time. Sonya Kruger is the true star, geniune witt as opposed to Sommers' tired bufoonery.
Hey Top Gear will be returning to SBS after the commonwealth games
I apologise in advance for singling out one specific person who has written to this blog, but I can't keep it in anymore.
Tess, all that texting your 'guyz' has affected the way you spell. A few corrections for you - everyone, absolutely, great and finally (I'm appalled that you couldn't spell this one correctly) THAT!
When there are people out there that can only communicate in text speak are you surprised that the highest rated evening news program is Channel 7 and not SBS, or that Today Tonight (featuring a miriad of Aussie Battlers) is continuously in the top ten rated shows.
Also, can we stop the America bashing now. They have the money and the actors to make quality tv. I do not watch any Australian made drama or comedy. The only home-grown programs I watch are the real news shows on SBS/ABC and Media Watch. I used to watch We Could Be Heroes when that was on and I'll sometimes watch Kath & Kim. Otherwise, in my opinion, Aussie TV is crap.
So long as the US is making The Sopranos, Earl, 24 and the UK is making Life on Mars, Top Gear, tv will be a better place.
Top Gear is scheduled for Monday the 21st August at 7.30pm. Also, a repeat of the first series will begin on Friday 31st of March at 2pm.
That should put Australia only about 18 months behind the UK for this show.
For the second week in a row, CIC has been repeated after 11pm on Ch7. Any idea on how the rerun is rating, and is this something they'll continue to do throughtout the season?
At least it means they're not showing that dogawful "Less Than Perfect".
I watched Ellen for the first time on Monday and thought it was fantastic. It was funny, fresh and is a welcome distraction from the preachings of Dr Phil.
What are the ratings for the daytime stapes - ie Ellen, Dr Phil, Oprah, Days of Our Lives, Young and the Restless?
Thank you Tribal Mind
Hear Hear Smookster.
I have to agree with you on the text-speak that annoys the hell out of me. It is lazy.
I also agree with you on the subject of Australian drama, with some notable exceptions - RAN on SBS being one. I cringe whenever I see the Aussie stereotype portrayed by Blue Heeler/Neighbours type shows.
American shows can be trashy, but they also have made some damn fine shows such as West Wing/ Sports Night/ Buffy/ Veronica Mars.
Anyway each to their own. :)
Nice work from The Simpsons and Futurama, have uncovered the fact that there will be no new Simpsons next week due to a clash with the Commonwealth Games.
Strange as I don't see the Games sucking us viewers from their fabled under 40 demographic.
Blood level starting to rise.
I must be one of the few people who doesn't watch DWTS. Daryl Somers is a washed up hasbeen, who should never have been resurrected!
Obviously, only a small percentage still watch the Bill on Tuesday night.
Yes, Channel 9's hopes of a trimphant Commonwealth Games ratings performance aren't looking too great, in the wake of Thorpie's departure(maybe now the female swimmers might get some more recognition), but one plus is Mark Nicholas doing the anchorman job(he's a class act). The rest of the year looks like a graveyard for Nine. I can't see Magda's Funny Bits, Clever, or Backyard Blitz lasting much longer. Does Eddie have anymore rabbits to pull out of his hat?
One complaint about Ten: why aren't they showing the latest series of AMERICAN IDOL? I don't think the ratings for it last year were any worse than the local version. Oh well, I guess I can always download it, like the rest of you. HA HA
Has there ever been a TV show in Australia's history that has delivered consistent weekly ratings of 2.2 million every week like Dancing With The Stars?
The ABC, 7 and 10 have the best programs at the moment. Spicks & Specks, Little Britain, Glass House, Commander in Chief, Amazing Race, House & NCIS are stand outs. I also can;t wait for Top Gear to return. It's a genuinely funny and informative show - even for people who aren't car lovers.
Does anyone even care about the Commonwealth Games? I think 9 is going to lose more of an audience (esp with Thorpe gone) during this time, and 7 & 10 could take advantage of that.
Also, does anyone think that last night's Rove was an improvement? They changed the formula, and introduced unpredictability which was a refreshing change. I say "have Rove Live at a viewers' house every week". Just not mine!
smookster, i think that you should get with the times. a lot of people nowadays are writing in text language and just because you and I don't, doesn't mean that you are more intelligent than them. plus for all your bagging out on Tess, I think that she has good taste for watching a great show like PRISON BREAK, I absolutely agree that it is a fantastic show, with lots of eye candy, as someone previously wrote in
shane and smookster, seriously get over yourselves, what are you people like 40 or something?????????? think you're so intelligent? well i've got news for you. The people who do watch SBS aren't the only brainiacs on teh whole planet, plus the people who watch channel 7 probably lead more successful lives or occupations than yourselves, so get off your high horses. we live in the 21st century
willow tree! I agree with you there regarding Daryl and Sonia. Get rid of Daryl who can't even put one sentence together without fluffing, except that stupid sweeping introduction of each dancer. Sonia could do it all on the spot without going backstage. They would save the money in paying Daryl. Last night I was clever enough to flick over to ABC2 not only in the Ads but when Daryl was talking. Try it!
Still I reckon the best part of DWTS is the judges.
Regards
Carie
I've been reading the posts on this blog and have to say that I LOVE Antiques Roadshow and am even going to the show at Enmore Theatre this Friday called 'Have you had it long Madam?'
completely agree with mouse and tess, and jenna, PRISON BREAK is the best show of the year. Plus I think that the only reason anyone would watch that 'Dinotopia' movie on Saturday night, is because Wentworth Milller, aka Michael Scofield from Prison Break, is in it.
The pretenious prigs who are always saying that Aus tele is the pits as they download the latest episode from the U.S must lead very dull lives if your greatest claim to being "out there" at the cutting edge of technolgy is to sit if front of a computer downloading a televison program.Get a life
chantelle:
Did you actually read my post?.
Aside from insulting people who are 40+ and making alot of assumptions about my age and how successful I am (if you are talking about my career, well as a software developer I am probably technically more literate than you, if you are talking about how much I earn as a measure of success I think you'd probably lose that one as well.)
I watch more shows that are screened on 7 than I do on SBS, but I download those shows.
I was commenting on the poor level of Australian drama, and the apparent inability of those who text speak to be able to type legible sentences in english.
Using "teh" instead of "the" doesn't make you credible.
Carrie! I used to use the switching channels method of avoiding knucklehead but found that I sometimes missed the judeges comments. Then I tried recording it and fast-forwarding throught dimwitts bits but the same thing happened as I record on high speed and my reflexes aren't what they were. Then it dawned on me...the mute button! It works a treat, its actually quite funny watching him flap his arms and his gums without sound, he looks like the idiot he is. The best thing however would be your idea of letting Sonya do it all from the dance floor. Cheers.
RE: John - "Get a life"
We're just getting our monies worth from broadband. It's either porn, TV or movies. It's what seperates 'us' from dail up.
Start the download before you go to sleep and it'll be done by morning. You'd be crazy to sit around and wait.
Err, John?
I don't think anyone is actually sitting at their computer while it's downloading. I think they're downloading while they're doing something else - playing with the kids, cooking dinner, watering the lawn (oops, that may be in one of those grey legal areas too..)
I think the people with the truly sad lives are people like you, who rely on free-to-air TV to force feed you with what they want you to see, rarely at the time you want to see it at. By the way - you've probably used a VCR at some time in your life. Downloading is the same. It's on-demand entertainment, that frees you to have a life, while still allowing you to extract a bit of enjoyment from good entertainment - bit at a time of your choosing.
It's attitudes like yours which means we keep getting inflicted with
Hi David, any news on how the West Wing is fairing now that it's on the ABC?
It would be interesting to see if those who "didn't" watch it on 9 are "not" watching it on ABC.
Tribal Mind replies: Hannah, please look for ratings week 9 at www.smh.com.au/tribalmind
