Shaddup you face. That's what this column says to people who complain about the silly season. What's the matter you? It's not so bad, it's a nicer place than the rest of the year (when the entertainment providers are only interested in the mass market).
Now is a time when the TV stations offer diversity and the viewers demonstrate discernment, a time when we see Australians at their best: open to new ideas and keen to keep up with current events. December and January should be called the sensitive, selective, or serious season.
Thus the top 20 most watched shows of the past fortnight have included the documentaries Dynasties and Grumpy Old Women; the newses on Nine, Seven and the ABC; My Favourite Movie; the pop-science Mythbusters; a sci-fi thriller called Surface; a supernatural drama called The Ghost Whisperer; and a belated return of the satirical series Futurama.
Traditionally the silly season has been a period when the networks recycle their trash (programs that didn't rate during the "official" year) and experiment on their guinea pigs (programs they fear are too clever for the average family). But one viewer's trash is another's treasure. One audience's flop is another's cult. Summer is the only time when the individual matters more than the mob.
Fans can finally learn what happened next in Joey, Gilmore Girls and Malcolm in the Middle. Trendspotters can analyse why young Americans are crazy for Veronica Mars (sexy teen detective), The Family Guy (subversive slapstick), and Stacked (Pamela Anderson mocking her own image). Nostalgists can savour ancient episodes of formerly cutting edge sitcoms such as Will and Grace and That 70s Show. It's like having pay TV for free!
On the results so far, these are the silly season shows most likely to survive past February: Surface, The Ghost Whisperer, Medium, Boston Legal, Futurama. And these are the shows we won't see again until December 2006, if at all: Headland, Wife Swap USA, Joey, Blind Justice, Dragons Den, Stacked, That 70s Show. Make the most of them while you may.
Now here's your opportunity to compare your tastes with those of other Australians, to be shocked that so many others have found that obscure drama you've been recording, to be delighted at the smallness of the elite who loves weird comedies, and to let us know about the discoveries you've made during this sensible season ...

Just thank your lucky stars that you don't live in the USA (like us currently) where they have two TV 'silly seasons' per year. One is during the Summer break which equates to our own Summer non ratings period, but in the height of their own prime TV viewing season (winter) they also have a hiatus for the Chrissy (sorry, Holiday)period. Shows like West Wing, Lost etc that are in mid-season vanish for a month in Dec/Jan.
I think its pretty fair to say that some of the programs that are saved up for "silly season" would probably rate OK during the normal season. Much of the problem is the fact that the networks don't have the faintest idea of how to market these shows. Good examples include Family Guy, Futurama and Gilmore Girls.
That's interesting, the networks teasing us with stuff that will be retired early, cancelled without warning or duplicated with multiple repeats while we wait in vain for new episodes. Hang on, that's not new...
How little free to air I watch now with Foxtel IQ. The shows I want, full seasons and an adequate PVR with a free electronic program guide as opposed to shows I am told I want, scheduling that I am told I want and unreliable programming.
Tough choice indeed!
I'm just happy that in the so-called 'silly season' television networks get a little more creative than merely showing five million different versions of the same show - that is CSI/Law& Order etc - which I hate and never watch. I'm loving Ghost Whisperer, love Will & Grace and That 70s Show. I end up having more to watch in non-ratings season, and I too am in the 16-39 age group! Wake up network execs! We don't all love crime shows!!
I don't bother with TV anymore, I find what I like and either buy and entire show on DVD or Download it until it is available for purchase.
Lost, West Wing, E-Ring, Commander in Chief, Alias, Supernatural, Doctor Who and Over There to name a few.
I then watch TV at the times that I want, when I want and watch how many episodes I want.
i like non-ratings period. THERE'S NO BIG BROTHER!
The best thing about the non-ratings period is that the networks really don't care about their programing so they are much less likely to screw around with their scheduling - it makes it so much easier to get into a series when you know that it is going to be on at the same time each week
I love the new shows Surface and The Ghost Whisperer. I was hoping to see Stargate SG1 or Stargate Atlantis on at a reasonable time (on at all would be great). As a regular Neighbours and Home and Away Addict it is a release to be free at for that hour of the day to take pleasure elsewhere. I don't know if anyone has noticed but pay TV seems to have gone soft on us as Christmas approaches. Another reason to turn off the box, crank up the carols and mow the bloody grass.
I was looking forward to seeing more of That 70s Show all year, and was rapt when it reappeared, that is, until channel 7 took it off after only 2 weeks. If we don't get to see this show during summer, when are we going to see it again? We're already 4-5 seasons behind the US.
Otherwise, I love the non-ratings period because we get to check out a whole new range of shows. Makes a nice change from all the versions of CSI and the reality shows that are on during the rest of the year.
Channel 7 took That 70s Show off the air after only two weeks without explanation or warning. So the same old crap happens in the non-ratings season as well. At least with those ratings figures I can get an idea why they might have done it.
I hate commercial TV... That 70s Show was the only reason I was back watching Ch 7. Oh well, same ol' same ol'.
While channel surfing the other day I discovered "American Dad". What were the OZTAM ratings for this show?
Its not often that you see a product from the US that knows how to be ironic. I understand that for all left wing subversity it actually runs on their FOX network (dont tell Rupert Murdoch).
Its so rare to find anything worth watching on the box. For that reason alone I'm sure this will be canned even before the silly season is over.
David Dale replies: American Dad was watched by 506,000 people in the mainland capitals. That's an example of a cult show that could build through word of mouth, if Seven gives it a chance
Veronica Mars has been a highlight of the non-ratings period for me. I'd heard that Joss Whedon rated it highly so that was enough of a recommendation to check it out. Its got some smart writing and interesting story arcs developing. As for the rest - meh.
Bring back The Amazing Race - the best show on Australian television, and one that unfortunatly only appears during silly season.
David Dale replies: This year, for a change, Seven showed The Amazing Race in the "official" ratings period, and it was a hit. So Seven is holding onto the latest season until February.
Boston Legal is a truly fantastic show, it's great to see it's getting a run during this season where people might not have seen it otherwise.
I'm truly baffled by Ten's decision to promote the crap out of Threshold - the show was cancelled by CBS at the beginning of December - and rightly so, it's bloody terrible.
Don't get me wrong, the first episode is somewhat intriguing, but it's a steep decline after that.
If you do like this show (and hey, each to their own) you're probably better off not watching it, as you're never going to see the end of the story.
I've noticed I watch and tape more TV during this off season than at any other time during the year! This is the only time I get to watch That 70s Show, Family Guy, and Futurama. I'm enjoying the fact that new shows such as Surface and to a lesser extent, Threshold, are out during Prime Time rather than at 11 or 12 at night. One of my favourite things to do is sit in the open lounge room at Forster, watching that 70s show with a Barbeque and a Beer.
I wouldn't recommend anyone anticipate the next season of The Amazing Race too heavily. The next season to air is The Amazing Race: Family Special, with family teams of 4 rather than the usual teams of 2.
Kudos to them for trying something new - unfortunately it doesn't really work, not for me at least. Part of the appeal of this show is the volatile couples that tend to lay into each other (and the other teams) through the race. Making it 'family' and having kids around denies us that element. I guess when you're onto a good thing...
I love the silly season's TV fair. Gilmore Girls, Smallville, Ghost Whisper (JLH-rowr!), Family Guy & American Dad, Stacked (witty dialogue, who'd have guessed?). I also have PayTV, but my viewing there has dropped recently because there's finally something worth watching that's free. Just wish 7 would show new episodes of Scrubs and in a regular time slot.
Actually, this holiday hasn't been too bad show wise. Surface, Smallville, Threshold, Futurama are all pretty good viewing, though for some reason I dispise Veronic Mars, god, it's so boring... and the whole season is about solving one murder.. I can't wait for CSI to come back on, they left us in a cliff-hanger!
Channel Seven's Director of Corporate Affairs, Simon Francis, has responded to Tribal Mind readers who complained (below) about Seven taking off 'That 70s Show'. Asked when the show would return, he said:
"We understand the disappointment of fans of 'That 70s Show'. Unfortunately, the programme has not met the heights of its summer ratings success of the past two years."
So even in the silly season, we can't rely on the networks for consistent programming. Perhaps the ABC should make Seven an offer for the 40 episodes so far unshown. The transfer of 'The West Wing' from Nine to the ABC sets a useful precedent.
And during the non ratings season, the networks can over-run programs, knowing that it won't affect their ratings.
The last episode of The Alice was nearly 40 minutes late. At least Sydney's trains are more punctual than Channel 9....
Quite a few interesting new shows on. But it seems a whole lot of them (from the promos at least) are about alien or terrifying creatures.
How is Blackpool doing? I find it totally surreal and wonderful...it's a crime drama, it's a musical, it's a comedy...I can't get enough of it!
David Dale replies: Your Blackpool passion is shared by 580,000 viewers in the mainland capitals.
Yeah, great article! Summer is actually the best time for TV. That 70's Show is one of my favourite shows ever. But 7 took it off after 2 weeks citing bad ratings. hey! it's non-ratings period! its replacement, Will And Grace, which I can't stand rates only slightly higher. I guess I'll just be getting into the Gilmore Girls and Stacked when they disappear again. record them while you can.
UKTV is so good at the moment. My Family, AbFab, Father Ted, Little Britain, GimmeGimme it's too much all at once, my ribs hurt.
Oh frabjous day, calloo, callay he chortled in his joy.....
The West Wing, hopefully in a stable timeslot.
This has to be one of the best Chrissie pressies ever.
Now if only the ABC could get the first 3 series and run them in order. A pox on 9 for all these years of treating we viewers like shit. Many blessings on dear, sweet Aunty for she shall redeem our souls.
I have also read that the Amazing Race - Family Special is a race around the U.S only. I'm suprised that Australia would bother to show it at all. U.S viewers switched off in droves.
I've always preferred non-ratings period. It gives a chance to find new shows and sure, more often then not its going to lead to me having to order the dvds from overseas because the networks tend to hide them away or send them into late night suburbia, but that's ok by me. Best show for me: Veronica Mars. And for those that don't think its so great yet, stick in there cause it gets so much better!
Does anyone else think Third Watch is a fantastic show - can't wait to see more!
I have been so numbed by the endless garbage on commercial tv [ commercial breaks evry 5 or 6 minutes, give me a break], that I have upped the ante and increased my pay tv contribution, and now include the movies in my selection.
Can only take so much being treated like a fool, by commercials.
Goodbye commercial tv, welome pay tv.
Eh, what? When did The West Wing go to the ABC? Wonderful if true but is it?
Although the Xmas season TV overall is not as bad as it used to be there's still the horror of Xmas Day TV... After a slapup lunch, way too much to drink, and too many relos to cope with it'd be nice to be able to settle down to a nice arvo/evening of halfway decent TV. But no, the same horrid junk they replay every fscking year on Xmas Day!
David Dale replies: The ABC has announced that from March next year it will run 'The West Wing' from the beginning of season four, and keep it in a consistent timeslot (probably 9.30pm).
Veronica Mars is a fantastic show - smart, funny, compelling and more than a little dark.
Watch more than two episodes in a row and you will be hooked.
The best bit is that the show did so well in the states that it has been renewed for a second season - so you don't have to worry about getting involved in the show only to have it cancelled.
Fans of the new show - Threshold are not so lucky.
Watch veronica mars - you will enjoy it.
Well what about the classic ABC shows that i remeber when i was young. Every day at 3.00p.m. The Banana Split show..... Kimba the white lion... AHH they where the days, mind you Aunty had the cricket then too.
Boston Legal now thats a show and a half.... if only i knew what i was saying; Thats right. Danny Crane!
That 70s show was NEVER cutting edge sitcom...
Maybe I am in a minority but I actually enjoy Headland (is this because I am not Aussie?). A pity it is hardly rating (2 1/2 men and Will & Grace has more viewers - come on Aussies!) and is likely to go off air soon.
This may be one of the better silly seasons.
Boston Legal, Grey's Anatomy ( the eps I missed ), Grumpy Old Men/Women, Futurama, Top Gear (not mentioned in your list and at least 2 years old but enjoyable none the less ), NCIS (also not mentioned) and Ghost Whisperer ( the wife likes that one so peace is maintained ).
As for the rest of the week there is always the DVD collection lets see Stargate Atlantis, Startrek, Farscape a good movie or two.
I was wondering how Arrested Development rates?...Its the best comedy on tv but channel 7 show it as late as possible...Instead of that dreadful 'Will and Grace' they show on primetime why don't the show something thats actually funny?
David Dale replies: When it was showing late at night, it was attracting around 600,000 in the mainland capitals. It is not showing at the moment, so it isn't in our Silly Season ratings list.
Where is Curb Your Enthusiasm?
The best American Comedy since Seinfeld.
Channel Ten have no idea!!!
One Tree Hill would have to one of the best shows for non-ratings, give it a decent time slot and advertise it a little, not run six episodes in two years and wonder why it doesn't get the ratings
I'm wondering where Arrested Development will fit into this whole picture. Being shown at 11.45PM! (or whenever its shown) is ridiculous. Same goes for scrubs, but AM. These two shows should have been the biggest hits of last year. Scrubs is just undeniably hilarious and has great continuity, Arrested Development is simply art! Most people who have found it are happy as larry that they did (and sobbing cause it was cancelled) but just because America is too stupid to appreciate Arrested, doesn't mean we are! Damnit channel 7 respect australia - ditch some reality floater and throw Arrested and Scrubs back to back thursday night 7.30!
Don't think you got away chump! You write for the SMH and you neglected to include arrested! SHAME!
I'm still waiting for a network to pickup the new series Prison Break. It rivals Lost for suspense and cliffhanging at the end of an episode. Of the current Summer crop, Futurama, Two and a half Men, Surface, and Boston Legal are the highlights. I was unfortunate enought o see 15mins of Headland, and the wooden acting, ridiculous dialogue and low production values make me ashamed of Australian-produced television. It looks like a low-rent Home and Away.
David Dale replies: Seven has picked up 'Prison Break' and will start showing it in February. See the Tribal mInd column headed "All the way with USA?'
I love Ghost Whisperer and Veronica Mars is great, Medium is always a keeper but where has One Tree Hill gone? Saturday at 6:30 was a hopeless time slot for One Tree Hill why dont channel 10 air it after Veronica Mars or before Charmed it would go great guns there.
Boston Legal is my winner. I was so dissapointed when seven took it off halfway through the year, but now it's back and was worth the wait. As for the kids, i think the ABC could rerun Kimba the white lion and it would still seem fresh. That Japanese style of animation is popular now. While your at it, bring back Mr Squiggle!
I love non-ratings time. Sure you get hooked to shows that get cancelled, but it's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. If only they'd do something about weekend daytime tv......
Yes over the last couple of years the "silly season" hasn't been too bad. I do enjoy crime shows but you can suffer from over load of these. So I am enjoying sitcoms,King of Queens, 2 and half men giving Joey a chance, loving new eps of Will and Grace and have been taping new eps of Spin City at ll.30am from 2 seasons ago and a show with Jenni Garth (hubby a big fan)What I like about you. Loving Veronica Mars,Ghost Whisper and Boston Legal.
As for Christmas day, boxing and new years day nursing sore heads and tummys while watching, Will and Grace Marathon, Friends marathon etc on pay TV. Believe it or not still find time to go for a walk also.
I don't have pay TV but have just watched the first 10 episodes of "Love My Way" on DVD. What a brilliant program. Possibly the most real and engaging Australian drama ever. How long will I have to wait to see the rest of series one on DVD and when will series two go to air?
It's the season not to watch TV. In fact take away the Cricket and Dr Who and the TV would rust at the moment through non-use. The current TV schedules are a disgrace. You cant be serious about some of the garbage you are praising. Especially the one who likes Two and half idiots and insult my intellignece for half an hour, only top off by Joey - is this worst sitcom ever.
Top Gear SBS Monday Nights @ 7.30, finally someone has the guts to put on a decent motoring show. Take note commercial stations Australian Television has been crying out for a decent PRIME TIME motoring show for generations
That 70's show was the main reason I had to look forward to the non ratings period. To my disappointment it was replaced by Will and Grace. Oh well, I'll just have get the DVDs. It was nice of Ten to show Futurama albeit a little too late. I also enjoy arrested Development but Seven puts it on too late.
Come on, this time of year is mostly associated with reruns of old shows but it seems as though many of the shows on air this year are decent, although it seems as though channel nine is constantly manipulating us viewers by changing the frequency of when the decent shows with be aired. Over all it's good to see that some of these shows are worth watching. Something for next year not everyone wants to see law and order or another CSI show, with all the violence at the moment maybe it's time to air shows which aren't constantly trying to find the cause of someone's death, as long as channel nine has CSI constantly playing I with be staying away and Gilmore girls is worth watching come on channel nine I thought the Alice was great if it was developed forming stronger relationships between certain characters then it would have been great but it seems as though all channel nine are interested in is proving that Aussie shows aren't worth it and neither are the viewers because all they seem to through at us are American shows which is constantly creating a week long stretch of crime.
BattleStar Galactica...??? Does anyone know when this will be back on...???
To answer Lisa Yes Love My Way Outstanding Australian drama and deserves the AFI's it picked up. The "W" channel on Foxtel will be screening the second season in Feb '06 (I know you don't have pay tv but I think that is why it so great as Claudia Karvan said foxtel gave them total creative control). I would take it as a guess that the DVD would come out mid year.
Arrested Development and Scrubs are two of the best and most under-rated shows and it is a shame that Ch 7 puts them in shocking timeslots and yanks them on and off the air without giving them a chance to build an audience. And you can't buy DVDs beyond Series 1 of AD and Series 2 of Scrubs, even though they're well past that in the US, so is it any wonder people are downloading them from the net...
Veronica Mars is by far the best new show this season in my opinion. It actually got depth...real depth people!
I can't believe Ghost Wisperer is actually rating higher. It's not bad..but it's certainly not great.
Oh, and One Tree Hill, perfect for this season but not given a chance. Im surprised headland hasn't rated higher also, I'm actually finding it quite addictive.
God I am so sick of all the police/crime shows, time for something a little different please.
I've got a little tip for Simon Francis at Channel 7 re 'That 70's Show' and it's disappointing ratings after 2 weeks. Drop 'Headland' the show with the dodgiest production values since Holiday Island and give us 'That 70's Show' at 7:30, followed by 'Will & Grace' at 8:00. I wouldn't be surprised if the ratings for 'Will & Grace' are suffering also - THERE IS NOTHING TO WATCH AT 7:30pm!! I've turned the tv off by 8pm. Thankyou.
It'd be a lot nicer if Channel Ten stopped enforcing ads that claim each 'next episode' is some amazing melodrama that is isn't.
Veronica Mars is turning out to be highly watchable after a few episode in a row, but the ads about it are shamelessly deceiving.
The best shows are Arrested Development, witty, humorous and interesting, Boston legal and I love dragons den. What a sad state of affairs when the re-runs of Grey's Anatomy, which I saw the whole series of earlier in the year are more entertaining than anything else in that time slot. channel 10 playing the secret life of us late night on a Thursday, that was a fabulous show but they ruined it by taking it off air 3 episodes into the new season. It still has all the brilliance of the first couple of seasons, you just need to get to know the new characters. Oh and another point.....when are channel seven going to bring back the last season of Angel....I wish they would just show some consistency instead of chopping and changing the time slots and shows seemingly at whim!
Bring on Alias Season 5!! Channel 7 buried season 4 on late night Thursdays and no-one got to partake of the Jennifer Garner goodness on a regular basis. I also loathe the double ep scheduling that seems to happen the day before, so if you happen to miss a week you're suddenly down two eps!!
Do people really have a problem with Bennifer v2? Jen kicks some serious butt.
I've watched the first 8 eps of season 5 to screen out of the US and it's excellent silly season fare. Might pick up a few extra viewers such that Channel 7 could run Season 6 in parallel with it going to air in the US. With Jen minus baby bump.
I am clinging to the hope that this so called silly season will bring back little gems such as The Sopranos and Nip Tuck. Real educational fufilling TV...... well not really but it keeps me stuck to the box!
I think Australian audiences need to give headLand a chance!
So many people complain about the lack of Australian drama on TV. The only way it will get made is by supporting and watching all new Aussie drama. When ratings improve for these shows the networks will spend more money and the production values will go up! Easy!
Finally Veronica Mars is on! Now if someone would just start showing South of Nowhere I'd really get a decent dose of good-trash-angsty-teen drama...
Yes, it is unfortunate that such great shows are cancelled before their time, dumped by the US networks that create them, leaving Australian networks with no idea what to do.
Futurama is one of these favourites, and I am glad that it is getting good ratings. Hopefully, this might result in Ten keeping Futurama for the prime season.
To Kim, it is again unfortunate that Alias, another classic, is being cancelled. Season 5 will be the last season. All the previous seasons were throughly enjoyed, and I hope the final season will be just as good.
Australia's networks must get their brains into gear and stop our reliance on American shows by creating high-quality dramas and comedies that are actually funny.
Kim -- Too bad they can't show S6 Alias seeing as they are cancelling it at the end of S5.
but the most important question - when are we getting the final season of six feet under?
I think '5 days till Midnight' is a brillant series. I'm trying to work out if there's only two episodes to go... Does anyone know?
Yeah, what ever happened to Season 9 of Stargate SG-1? I always look forward to non-rating season for this show. The program is even available to buy on DVD in the UK before it gets to TV here! Come on Channel 7!?!?!
Hey Seamus McP - Veronica Mars is well into its second season in the US, and the first is available on DVD from online retailers. If ten starts screwing with the timeslot for sporting functions, make sure you get your hands on it - it just keeps getting better!
Thank God for Foxtel - I can watch anything I want whenever I want - quality / trash/unbelieveable trash/great movies - I don't even have to go to the video store ANYMORE. Surely Frasier was "too clever" for the average family but Arrested Development is perhaps too wacky... I LOVE it! I loathe Summer TV on "Nein" everything is subject to Cricket and KP's whims. 7 is at least adventurous. 10 has to be the LCD network. Thank God I NEVER have to see another BB ad!
As long as your networks are looking for new material Look of the Canadian Television series "Corner Gas".Think Sienfeld in a one horse town operating a gas station. Its set in Saskatchewan, about as close to the outback as we get here. Its in its third series. about 50 episodes mostly half hour in length with 4 or 5 hourlong shows. Its as funny as anything the Americans have come up with. Maybe better.
Maria - The Sopranos had a 2 year production break between the fifth and sixth seasons. The sixth season is due to start in the US in March 06, so we won't get any new eps before then.
I gotta agree that sometimes the holiday season has the best cult shows though sometimes it's the tv stations own fault that shows don't rate. For example last summer The O.C was shown on Channel 9,w uith the constant time swapping and bad nights they dropped it. Channel 10 picked it up and it was a high rater during rating periods. I agree that Veronica Mars is a great show and am current in watching mid season 2 due to friends overseas. Someone asked about Stargate SG1 and Atlantis, Channel 7 has said that they will be back next year they were just waiting because there has been a 3 month break mid season in the US.
On talks of ABC buying the West Wing the rumours are true and hopefully be shown at reasonable hours instead of close to midnight on Nine. Though there are a lot of good shows on tv at the moment there is also a lot of junk. I agree with Alex that stations need to have a look at when people are watching the most tv and that would definatley be the silly season.
I love Arrested Development, I'm a couple of episodes into the third season at the moment. I wish Channel 7 would play it at a decent hour so that others can discover the joys of AR. I think it's the best comedy around at the moment. I've been a fan of Futurama for a while and it's great that friends are able to watch it on my recommendation now that channel 10 has salvaged it from channel 7.
Veronica Mars is the best show on TV right now. But I hope it gets moved to 8:30PM because Ten keeps on editing it for the 7:30PM time slot.
They need to treat the show and its fans with a bit more respect. And those promos! Someone needs to be shot!
I've been a fan for months and I'm glad it's finally on in Oz but it would do better if Ten treated it right.
Well all i have to say is 'FINALLY!! GILMORE GIRLS IS BACK ON!!!'
mm..yeah what i often wonder is why the tv stations dont show reruns, over summer, of excellent shows..like ER, Stargate SG1 and SGA..etc..
omg
ghost whisper is the coolest!!!
Summer is so cool for television... That 70s Show, Family Guy... all dissapeared, and now they're back. I'm surprised though that Gilmore Girls isn't programmed throughout the year- I thought it was so much more popular?
all i can say is thank god for owning my own copy of arrested development season 1 dvd!! it keeps me going while channel 7 maintain the ridiculous schedule of airing this amazing show whenever they seem to feel like it - it is hands down the best comedy on tv and deserves a much better chance to gain a following. and till ch7 get their acts together i'm much happier to download the new eps off the net....
BRING BACK THAT 70'S SHOW AND GET RID OF HEADLAND!!!
what about the OC and dawson's creek????
Well despite the fact that Headland might not be rating well, it's still filming! This means it will probably be around longer than some think!
Using TV ratings as the only guide to a program's popularity is surely a self destructive process.
As soon as a program fails to meet expectations in the ratings, the scheduling "gods" shuffle the program timeslot, usually with little or no forewarning to the viewing public, to a harder to find or ever changing timeslot. Such treatment is almost guaranteed to reduce the audience numbers further by losing all the regulars who do not live in front of the TV, and only picking up the insomniacs and socially reclusive.
The resulting reduction in ratings sees the program either labelled as a cult program, meaning the scheduling gods can move it to whenever they like and still get the same audience numbers (do the ads move with the programs?) or simply take them off air to experiment with something else.
The investment made by the networks in buying the programs must be incredibly low compared to the advertising dollars they risk losing in the ratings variations, as the programs are rarely given more than two episodes to find their feet. (Do they only pay for what they show?).
Only 5 years ago, stations didn't try to convince us that every program was going to be the "best ever". It takes time to warm to a show, to grow a reputation and an audience. The advertising dollar has the patience of a gnat, hyped up on caffine.
As long as we let the advertising dollar determine our programming, we will have to suffer its fickle nature.
Remember, TV stations don't exist to entertain us (except Aunty and Essa-B-Essa), they exist to make money from advertising.
Take your arguments to the real people controllng the programming, so that they stop listening to the extrapolated oztam surveys (what is it, 0.05% of the population?).
For example, set up a web site on TV ratings, and let a larger audience really vote on their preferences. Get the real message to the advertising executives and their hand puppets, the scheduling "gods".
Then we can all get back to enjoying watching TV again, instead of being treated like lab rats every week.
I wish Ch7 would stop treating the viewing public like idiots!!!!!
Why must they make us suffer headLand? 4 nights a week? Why dost Ch7 wag thy tongue in noise so rude against the TV viewing public?
Because they've obviously got a lot riding on it, and I'd imagine this "quality" local drama is poised to be sold o/s to the UK etc, thus recovering productions costs.
As for axing That 70's Show, isn't it TV law that if your lead-in is complete manure that the following show will suffer?? We are way too many seasons behind on this show!
At least replace that dog-awful "Less Than Perfect" that you insist on showing late at night.
I caught Arrested Development on Monday night at some ungodly hour. And Scrubs on a Wednesday at some similar hour. Why are these brilliant shows banished to the doldrums???
At least Ch7 get it right on a Tuesday night with Ghost Whisperer and Boston Legal. Otherwise they have no freakin' idea.
Channel 7 definitely has a lot to answer for... basically, no matter how hard we try there are no words to convey their stupidity in regards to the timeslots of Scrubs and Arrested Development. Meanwhile, I must say i'm glad to see Gilmore Girls back finally - and also Secret Life of Us. (And i'm getting very addicted to Teachers on ABC).
To those who have a problem with channel 7: hey, Headland rulez, okay!
I think they should bring back Prisoner. Now that was an excellent Australian drama, unlike the rubbish they make these days such as Headland. After all the hype I started watching Headland but after 2 weeks I switched off in disgust and I'm definately not returning. Channel 7 should be embarrassed about claiming this to be a quality production. They just don't make Australian dramas like they used to so how can we be expected to watch and support them?
Last year ABC showed Carnivale during the silly season - and I heard ealier this year that they bought the second series - when is this going to be shown?
The silly season - I don't watch that much. Find it a good time to cut TV, watch the odd show or two, catch up on DVDs, and get things done I wouldn't because I was too "scheduled in" with study/work and a fave show during the rest of the year. Hooray for the silly season! The show that really hooks me in though is the tennis later in summer ...
will some please tell me if nip/tuck will be back on later this year? of after christmas?
Oh man I really do get sick of writing this, there is absolutely NO WAY the AusTam ratings work.
How in the name of all things wonderful can 3000 people-meters (owned by the Free Networks I might add)in home across Aus estimate what 12,000,000 people are watching and when.
They just dont and cant possibly give a true representation of who's watchiong what and when!
Get rid of it!
I only recently discovered "Scrubs" and after watching it every day at 11 am have become addicted, i was so dissapointed when they completely took it off and I have been trying to find out if it will be back on soon. I wish I had known about it earlier, because it is hilarious, and it is like no other comedy I have ever watched before. I found out that season 5 of "Scrubs" is being aired in January 2006 in the U.S I just hope they put it on Australian television, but I have a bad feeling they wont. Does anyone know if Scrubs will be returning to TV this summer?
RE GARY AND AUSTAMS RATINGS.
If you are sick of repeating yourself over the ratings and how they are measured then why bother. It seems to me that the ratings have some significance to you or why would you make such a fuss. Who cares about ratings?. Download the shows you want to watch and give the networks the flick.
hey i was just wondering when the oc was coming back on tv
im a 14 yr old girl and i love "silly season" you get to see new and different shows like headland (LOVE IT!!! ITS THE BEST!) and that 70's show (but they axed that!) channel seven should give these shows a chance! its holidays kids are at friends plces out playing (because it hot and the only time to play is late afternoon!) on holidays grown ups getting dinner started xmas partys new years partys alot goes on in the summer break in australia last thing people have time to do is watch tv! when it cools down and the days get shorter yer every1 sists down and watches tv! when home and away comes back on i still think head land and that 70's show should be on at least twice a week even for half an hour! we still get to see these shows! and what ever happend to my wife and kids? that was a extreamly funny show! verionica mars is over rated i think! come on a whole summer just to solve 1 murder mystery? thats pathetic! give the new shows a chance who knows you might even get to love them!!
HEAFLAND SHOULD STAY ON! GIVE IT A CHANCE!! its a good australian show with some reasonably good talented acters and actresses!
Tv is turning my brain into mush...
I have waiting 14 months for them to show the final season of six feet under.......cmon for gods sake.
where's Nip/Tuck!!???
*cries*
i want it back on! does anyone know when?
when is stargate atlantis comming back i need 2 know thay carnt just end the last ep like that then not tell us a date when it will be back if anyone know when SGA is gonna air again can you PLEASE e-mail me
Saw an advertisement on channel 7 last night for the Amazing Race and it appears they are not going to be screening the "Family Edition - Series 8". I have watched the Series and it is actually quite good (apart from the fact they don't leave america). Instead they are going to screen Series 9 which starts in the US in February. Perhaps they will show Series 8 later in the year when it is non-ratings.
hey i want to know if and when Battlestar Galatica was coming back. it was a good show and i liked it alot i want to KNOW!!
omg why must channel 10 torture was teenagers!.. all i want them to do is to put one tree hill back on for gods sake! They put it back on in december at 6:30 sat nights for 1 epo and then later i am told and see in the tv week that it is being aired weekdays 12pm from monday 16th jan and all i see is 7th heaven!! God channel 10 if u think the ratings suck well hen maybe you should sell the show to another network..say channel 7 or 9!! And well channel 7 not angry at you but why did u take off that 70's show? i love that show...now i have to wait for season 1 boxset of one tree hill to come out sseeing as we may never ever see that show again..thank you very much channel 10 u just made my holidays!!!!!
Why on earth are channel TEN such fags? They put One Tree Hill back on for one freaking episode only, and then claim that the ratings weren't good! Well, of course they were bad with the time slot 6.30 Sunday, which is the "timeslot of death"! And not giving the show time to build up an audience! It's an amazing show, better than all those crime/law shows and it would do wonders in the prime time season. I have to say it beats the O.C by a mile!
Because of TEN, i have had to download OTH. And Dvd shops dont seem to stock OTH either. Damn Ten. Plus, Australia are like 2 and half seasons behind the U.S, so i've given up hope, but for the love of all the other teenagers in Australia who may not have access to the internet, show OTH and treat it well! Put it on at a decent time slot - preferably 7.30 or 8.30 Monday-Thursday.
Another thing that has always peeved me about TEN, is their showing of Charmed earlier this year. They were throwing the show around everywhere from 6.30 sundays to 7.30 thursdays, and now in "silly season" it was at 9.30 thursdays, then it moved to a better time slot of 8.30 wednesdays for a few weeks and now it is back on at 9.30 mondays. 9.30 is a horrible time slot. And who is in charge of the promotion of this show?! The ads they make are so misleading, not only for Charmed, but for practically every show on the network!
If they want show to rate well in the prime season, promote it well, dont play misleading ads- make commercials that do the show justice and perhaps relate to the storyline of the episode of the show. And for godsakes, cut the reality-show crap! NO BIGBROTHER or AUSTRALIAN IDOL!!!!!!!!
I also love "Silly Season". It's seems to be the only time they show my favourite- Gilmore Girls.
Why can't nine just leave Gilmore Girls on during the year and instead of just in non-ratings periods. I know there are a lot of us out here who would love to see that.
C'mon, channel 9, How many cop shows and forms of csi: can you have? Give another drama a go.
stargate atlantis?!?! is seven gunna put it back on it is better than sg1 i bet it has alright ratings the better not get rid of it like they are doing to blue heelers just for some anoying football that isnt even popular up here in NSW/QLD
I like threshold and so do a lot of my friends. Ten didnt even say anything at the end of the show. They just cut it off like so many other programms. I cant afford pay tv. free to air is crap with adds evey 4 min and they sometimes run longer than the segments of the program. The ABC is great, i watch it alot but all the other channels drive me nuts with adds and i end up taping just to fast forward the adds. Shows like SG1 and Farscape, basically all the sci fi is cut without warning. Im sick to death of simpson reruns their just taking up slots for shows that we like to watch. CHANNEL TEN YOU CAN STICK IT UP YOUR JUMPER.
When are they going to put season 2 of Stargate Atlantis back on?. And when are they going to put season 8 of Charmed on they have nearly finished it in the USA i need to see what happens in both shows. Thats the whole prob with australian tv programs they put the shit stuff on and not the stuff peps want. They just say they do. Oh and thanx to Ten for bringing back smallvill and bringing supernatural to australia well done there. Now put the shows we want back on.
The Tribal Mind reports: First question - see channel seven's response in the Tribal Mind column entitled "the ratings race". Second question: probably next silly season (December).
i really wanna know if veronica mars is coming back on tv i dont care what channel but it has to come back on please let me no when it is if it is
Tribal Mind replies: unlikely before December.
when is nip tuck coming back on ? such a good show and Julian Mc mahon is mint!!!!! also when is charmed coming back on ????????
TM replies: The stations refuse to give dates for forthcoming shows more than two weeks ahead, to prevent the other stations counter-programming. My guess is that Nip Tuck and Charmed won't be back till December.
when is nip tuck coming back? they advertised it at the end of a show a few weeks ago and i havn't heard anything since!
Am I the only person who remembers Alias. For some reason channel 7 put seasons 1 and 2 on at 8:30, season 3 was practically ignored and season 4 got shown at 9:30 when most people are thinking about going to bed. The idea of showing 2 episodes back to back was great but it would have been even better if we didn't have to wait till midnight to see them. I know for a fact America was watching season 5 in October last year so why do we have to wait until October a year later, surely it doesn't take that long to get the episodes out here I know we're an island but thats ridiculous. I bought the first 4 seasons of alias, once a month starting with season 1 at Christmas thinking that by the time i watched all 4 they would be advertising season 5 at the very least. But no we have to have 3 million reality tv shows like survivor, real crime, big brother and Australian Idol in about 8 seasons of american and australian idol one person has done well. Not to mention a different series of C.S.I. every night yet shows like Alias, Charmed, Stargate:Atlantis, That 70's Show and the train-wreck Joey(you know you shouldn't but you have to look)get shipped off to summer tv. The time of the year when we should be taking advantage of daylight savings and going to the beach or having a barbie at a mates house. I bet most people would prefer to watch Alias or Charmed than Survivor 64 or whatever number we're up to (isn't 1 per year enough). Anyway if your hoping your favourite show is going to be on the program settle in for the long haul we have a full season of all the crap thats on tv now to sit through, 2 months of survivor a full 365 episode set of C.S.I. and a whole season of big brother to wait to finish so if you want my advice take the $500 you saved for a new couch and go to K-Mart to buy season one of all your favourite shows because its the closest your going to get to them being on the box any time soon.
Tribal Mind replies: You're unlikely to get an answer to your question on this blog, which is ancient. How about going to the latest TV blog spot at www.smh.com.au/tribalmind and making your comment again?
Come somebody please tell me when the rest of season 2 of Grey's Anatomy will be airing once again? Why is it taking so long?
Tribal Mind replies: Amanda, why are you on this ancient blog? This is being discussed on the latest blog - go to www.smh.com.au/tribalmind
hey, hey, no ones mentioned anything bout charmed season 8 so im gunna have my say... well charmed season 8 better be coming soon coz i've been keepin track of it over in the us and and they only have 1 ep to go... come on do we have to be behind in every show thats comes on tv!!!! oh and ab fab should be on normal tv,,,, and also they should bring back re runs of beverly hills 90210 and melrose place ... lol my fave shows since well.... foreva lol.. so yeh u ppl at the tv station beta get this coz not one channel plays bev hills and only pay tv runs melrose and i got rid of that so pls put it on normal tv and BRING back charmed
Tribal Mind replies: This is interesting, but why are you commenting on a blog that was finished five months ago? Go to www.smh.com.au/tribalmind for the current blogs. And surely Charmed jumped the shark when Shannen Doherty was killed by the clock.
hey i was just wondering if anybody knew where you can buy the three series of growing up gotti on dvd in australia
Channel Ten bring back charmed! I'm sick of waiting for this show to come back on air. I have many friends around the world in different countries and most of them have seen the new season of charmed! why is it taking so long to bring back charmed? rumour has it its not returning to channel ten. is so Prime i say steal the show, your ratings will raise!
omg charmed is the best,,,,,,,,,,,
im just wondering when u ppl are gonna put the season 8 of charmed on tv? when u have the answer plz let me know thanksssss
Tribal Mind replies: This blog is way out of date. If you want an answer to your question, best to use the latest TV blog, which is at www.smh.com.au/tribalmind. The bloggers are currently discussing Charmed on there.
I am replying to Josh's comment on Alias. To Tribal Mind, You were very rude to him!
Alias is a fantastic show, with amazing plotlines, characters, action, drama, acting and everything else. I own all seasons on dvd and now channel 7 is FREAKING SHOWING SEASON 3 EPISODES AT THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT! Cut the crap and show season 5!!!! Thank god Headland was buried, but please! Can we promote Arrested Development and Alias! Lost is fabulous, and Australia knows it! Why don't the idiots at channel seven make a J.J. Abrahms double. Lost and then Alias. Start it at 7:30. That takes you through til 9:30 for both episodes to air. PERFECT! People would watch it. Put it in prime television. We shouldn't need superglue to keep our eyes open as we watch our grossly underrated fav tv show. GGGRRRR! And another thing, WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH DANCING WITH THE STARS AND IT TAKES TWO??! Stop airing these pathetic excuses for entertainment and put Alias on at a better time. Josh, wherever you are. I remember Alias. And I completely agree. Sydney Bristow signing out!
Anyone else who agrees that Alias is amazing and should be put at a better timeslot (and aired in the first place. SEASON 5- HURRY UP!), please email me and we can complain about how much of a raw deal we've gotten.

perhaps more people would watch during the non-ratings if good shows were put on, i watch FAR more tv in non-ratings then ratings, and i'm in that juicy 16-39 category
