The Greatest (Football) Hits of 2007

It's the time of year when, ho ho ho, everyone makes up "highlight" lists from the past 12 months.

So, if there's a bandwagon, I'm on it.

As an ever fluid global drama, football had its own peculiarities in 2007, both at home and away.

Here, in no particular order and with no particular criteria, are my own greatest hits from 2007. Some of them, literally.

Feel free to add your own.

1. Watch Dyego Coelho takes out Kerlon.
This may be the greatest hit of 2007. Coelho demonstrares that Brazilians really don't care for the beautiful game anymore. Up-and-coming star Kerlon pulls some fancy pants flicks and headers but, hey, let's bring him down to Earth. South Sydney might consider a bid for the defender but, in truth, Coelho will probably sign for Celtic in January. Watch from the one minute mark for the best view of the biff.

2. Dida's dramatic dive.
Actual proof that that tom foolery is not restricted to outfield players. Brilliant in its stupidity. Lost in the mix - it was Australian Scott McDonald's match-winning goal that sparked the incident.

3. Australia gets tonked at the Asian Cup by Iraq.
Boy, did we suck. Watch the Australian defending on all three Iraq goals. You'll have to look hard. There isn't any!

4. Iraq win the Asian Cup.
At least the victory brought happiness to a broken country for a while. That was, until car bombers targeted celebrations.

5. England get tonked by Croatia.
Really, England were awful throughout their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign. The reign of Fab "Could have been ours" Capello will be very interesting.

6. Some people thought hiring Pim Verbeek was a bad idea.
Robbie Slater certainly wasn't impressed.

7. In truth, here's a possible glimpse of the future under Verbeek.
He's certainly got some passion. Leading South Korea against Japan in the Asian Cup play-off for third place, Verbeek AND two of his assistants, as well as defender Kang Ming-soo, were sent off.

8. Terry Butcher got the chop from Sydney FC.
It couldn't come soon enough for some people (PS It's not really Craig Foster's son).

9. David Beckham came to play in Sydney
Apparently, he is a footballer not just a circus act.

10. Archie Thompson scored 768 goals in the Grand Final earlier this year.
(OK, it was five). But his performance on Sale of the Century was better.
And who knew he gets mistaken for Anthony Mundine?

2007 was the Year AC Milan dominated the football world. During there run to Champions League glory they knocked out Bayern Munich (German champs), Manchester United (english champs) Then beat Liverpool in the Final. They then went on to beat Sevilla in the European supercup and just last week beat the champions of South America in Boca Juniors. This was easily the highlight of 2007.

Huge rumour going around that Ronaldinho could be on his way to AC Milan. I love this time of year and reading about who is going where. I also read that Inter Milan have made an enquiry about Marco Bresciano. There was a rumour linking him to Manchester City too, things must not be going as well as we seemed for Bresciano.

I think if Inter and Man City are interested in your services, then all is very well.

AC Milan have been piss poor in their domestic campaign this year so i wouldnt say they "dominated" the football world.

Steve, AC Milan were piss poor about this time last year but strongly to win a champions league birth. Also, they have 3 games in hand than all the other teams in the Serie-A. They may not be dominating the Serie-A. Also, Seeing the gifted Kaka has been a highlight of 2007 also.

west ham saving themselves from relegation with an away win at old trafford on the final day of the league was the highlight of the year for me...COME ON YOU IRONS!!

Speaking of AC Milan, I wanna see Kaka get silenced. If there is 1 game that SBS should show on TV it's the Milan Derby and its about 8 hours away. This game is gonna be a humdinger and i hope motormouth Marco Materazzi takes Kaka out. Anyone know where you can see the game live on-line ? I so wanna see how Zlatan Ibrahimovic goes against Milan's defence in Alessandro Nesta and there guard-dog Gennaro Gattuso. I wanna see Ibrahimovic cut-loose, this guy is amazing to watch, he has the size of a Tongan with the skill of a Brazilian. If you guys wanna see the best goal ever, check out youtube and search for Ibrahimovic's goal for Ajax. Ibrahimovic & his strike partner Julio Cruz with either David Suazo or Hernan Crespo coming off the bench are a deadly force in world soccer. My tip for the Milan derby is Inter Milan 2-1 with Ibrahimovic and Materazzi scoring the Inter's goal's and Clarence Seedorf scoring for AC Milan. Gonna be a classic and hopefully these ego's like Kaka in Milan will be silenced.

Marcos Bresciano is hardly getting any game time at Palermo. He is getting splinters on his bum from sitting on the bench too much.

I reckon the most over-rated player in the world is this guy from called Julio Cruz who plays for inter Milan. Everytime i read the results from around Europe he is always on the score sheet.

It has to be the smashing 4-0 defeat for Brasil over the USA in the FIFA womens world cup. Marta is majic!

  • by girl on December 24, 2007 at 09:15 AM

PD, Zlatan had a quiet game by his standards but he set up the 1-0 goal. Did you check out how he had 3 defenders on him and still managed to get the pass away?

Dave, you are a wanker. Julio Cruz is on the score sheet all the time because he's an in-form striker. His 1-0 goal was sniper precision (even though I would have turned it around the post).

Speaking of which, Geoff Boycott's mum would have done better than Dida in the 2-1 goal. Justice though, the ref and linesman were bat-blind missing the handball situation in the first half.

Goal of the weekend: Real Madrid's winning goal against Barcelona... a one-two as you haven't seen it before, and what a finish!

How could anything compare to Dida's dive? Hilarious!!
