Who will be our Asian Cup superstar?
With the much-hyped tournament set to kick off this weekend, it's a question worth asking.
There was a time not so long ago when the Socceroos were almost a one-man team when it came to mixing ability with celebrity.
If Harry Kewell wasn't part of the team, let alone squad, the boys were unfortunately perceived as the Duderoos, second best also-rans who were largely anonymous, playing as supporting cast to cool Kewell.
But times have, thankfully, changed. Today, the Socceroos are marketed, and largely perceived, as a team.
Kewell remains the marquee name and receives the most attention from the wider world but he's no longer alone in the spotlight.
Big matches often bring out big performances from players prepared to step up to the next level.
With one penalty kick, and one bare-chested run around Homebush, the 2005 World Cup qualifier made John Aloisi a household name across the country.
So too, Mark Schwarzer and his shoot-out saves etched his face into the psyche of Australia, even if Guus Hiddink remained bizarrely unconvinced by his ability.
Schwarzer has star quality, that elusive X-factor, and since that November night has parlayed his profile into sponsorship deals and even co-written a book for kids.
Last year's World Cup in Germany was a spotlight catapault for Lucas Neill and Tim Cahill.
Long time friends, ever since their days together at Millwall, Neill was outstanding at the tournament and his role in that infamous penalty only added to his personal legend rather than detract from it.
Cahill's goals against Japan summed up what Australians like in a hero footballer.
Wind him up, let him go, get one in the net any which way and then follow it up a few minutes later with a sweetly struck drama-laden pile driver.
Hooray! Timmy becomes an instant hero to millions.
But does anyone else have the ability to step up at the Asian Cup?
The opportunity is there but does Brett Holman have what it takes to rival Tim Cahill as a big name player? Perhaps any comparison is unfair.
The Australian obsession with the English Premier League means that many players are, if not outright ignored, then at least overlooked by the public.
That's one reason why, despite excellent reputations in Italy, Mark Bresciano and Vince Grella probably don't have higher profiles at home.
If Bresciano played for Liverpool and Grella was Everton's midfield rock, they might equal Kewell's swaggering star status.
Holman plays for Nijmegen in Holland. You probably can't pronounce the club's name properly, even if you have heard of them.
They are an admittedly unglamorous club in a league where only three sides - Ajax, Feyenoord, and PSV - can be considered heavyweights.
So it's unfortunate that, even if Holman flourishes with the Socceroos, his current club status means that he won't be the next poster boy for the national team.
Not yet, anyway.
The Asian Cup may also provide a big opportunity for Nick Carle.
A favourite at Newcastle Jets in the A-League, Graham Arnold is likely to use Carle off the bench as a Cahill-like gamebreaker if things are getting a little tricky in the Bangkok heat.
Carle last month agreed a move to Genclerbirligi in Turkey, a no nonsense side that had success several years ago when Josip Skoko was an influential member of the team.
But Skoko has told me in the past that while the Turkish league is high quality, with big crowds, and the facilities are often better than what is experienced in England, it comes up as a big fat zero as far as creating a profile at home in Australia.
Two players with a lot of potential to kick through are Sydney favourite David Carney, who could be on his way to Charlton Athletic if a mooted deal goes through, and Patrick Kisnorbo.
With the Socceroos defensive cupboard seemingly bare, Graham Arnold intends to groom Carney as a left wingback and inherit Scott Chipperfield's role.
A defender, rather than a swashbuckling attacking midfielder, the door of opportunity has swung wide open for Kisnorbo, even if he plays for Leicester City in the English Second Division.
He has been constantly linked with a move away from Leicester - a team that seems marooned in mediocrity - and the Premier League beckons.
First, though, for all these players, is the Asian Cup.
Reputations are about to be made or broken.
The stage is there. We just need someone to step up.
I am forever grateful to Mark Schwarzer for getting us to the world cup but - please - he has not an ounch of star quality and zero charisma.
Yes please leave Wilkshire on the bench - or even better in the hotel room. He is the Leighton Hewitt of the Socceroos - bad tempered, rash and not much talent
Cmon Matthew, any football follower will have rated Schwarzer, Bresciano and Cahill as superior to kewell as super stars 2 years before the world cup, (unless you were still glued to League).
Reputation often lingers after the skill has fallen. Injuries have been the reason behind Harry's deimse although notice how he can stay outplay anyone while injured?
As for Holman, he hasnt got that natural ability of kewell but neither did Viduka.
At least Lucas has that tiger to win albeit clumsy at times.
I agree with Jane - despite instant hero status with two amazing penalty saves (for which I too am forever grateful as I was lucky enough to go to every Aussie game in Germany) Schwarzer has not been a bastion of reliability between the posts over the years.
With the exception of Dukes, Timmy and perhaps Lucas, no player in Socceroos history comes close to Harry's class - at his peak he would have made most people's list for top ten players in the world. Based on Holman's performances so far he's barely even playing the same sport, let alone in the same league.
Still, you're point about the boys being seen much more as a team than a couple of individuals with support is a good one and suggests a real step forward. It certainly improves the chances of another H coming along much sooner rather than later.
You have to be joking!!! Did you watch the Singapore game? Holman didn't even know where the goal post were. How many opportunities has he stuffed up? We need a clinical finisher in the Socceroos and someone to fill Duke's shoes when he retires.
If I was Graham I would forget about McDonald and Holman and look to our next generation.
btw, why don't they start Archie? At least he can finish!
Viduka's goalscoring record for Australia is lame. Most goals for Australia have come from midfielders in recent years. Sorry to break it to you but Holman and McDonald ARE the next generation. Unless the team start to play in nappies. - MH
I am worried that players like Wilkshire are sloppy and careless and try things under Arnold (fancy rubbish and incompetence when defending at the near post anyone?) that they wouldn't dare have attempted under Hiddink - because they knew Hiddink was in charge and would murder them for being so stupid and obviously losing focus. They are lax under Arnold and have lost the discipline they had under Hiddink. Can't wait for our new coach - soon please Frank Lowy!
obviously hiddink saw something in wilkshire.
wilkshire is very much a typical english midfielder... and this is hardly a bad thing... it only became a bad thing when craig foster began to demonise the epl... which made me ask the question... which made me ask the question "who does craig foster think he is anyway?"... hes not the guru that he believes he is.
Jesse G; the very fact that Schwarzer is a Goal-Keeper means that his performances CANNOT be compared wih an outfield player such as Harry, if anything I think Harry and Mark would share a place in the top ten for their respective positions;
in my opinion they're both equal in terms of quality, both possesing those bursts of inspiration that have the potential to change the course of the game.

What about James Triosi, David Williams, Kaz Batafta, Nathan Burns and Bruce Djite??? Why is it that in Australia we wait for players to make it overseas before we even consider drafting them into our senior national squad when in other countries it's the other way around.
Players like Nani and Anderson who Man U have just signed all play in their national team and that's how they got the attention of the big clubs.
In Australia there has traditionally been a lack of willingness to give the young players an opportunity and sticking to veterans who really aren't going any where. Arnie was going to play Josip Skoko if he was available!
You want young players to stay in the A-League, you want to plan for 2010 and you want the X-Factor? Well its not going to happen with Holman, Wilkshire, Thaiwate, Kisnorbo........the guys Arnie has earmarked as taking us to the next World Cup
Nani and Anderson have class and quality, demonstrated by being signed by Ferguson. Djite, Patafta (Not 'Batafta'), and Burns play in the A-League. Williams is in Denmark and Troisi plays in Newcastle's reserves. None are ready to step up yet in teh same way as Nani and Anderson.
Carle is a potential star. He needs players who can react to his flair - probably work best with Culina & Viduka.
Schwarzer is inconsistent. He lacks balls. He needs to come off his line and dominate. He's not a star.
The fact that Luke Wilkshire is in the starting line up says a lot about Arnie as a coach.
Arnie's should have selected Matthew Spiranovic. He would solve some of our defences troubles and at the same time gives him experience for 2010 with Craig Moore retiring.
What happened to Josh Kennedy Matt?

Spiaranovic is doing a pre-season with Nurenburg rather than sit on the bench for Australia. It's a good idea. That way he has a decent chance of making Nurenburg's starting line up next season. kennedy is injured. he snapped his Achilles tendon a year ago. - MH
